Odds and Ends: Fishing for reality

girlfriday: So how about that premiere of Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village?

javabeans: It’s crazy that it hit nearly 10% ratings in the first episode. That’s NUTS.

girlfriday: Yeah it’s kind of crazy, but that series is one of the most successful shows on tvN (I mean, starting with the original on the farm). But the thing that surprised me the most was that Jang Geun-seok was cut out of it so completely.

javabeans: I expected them to cut around him as much as possible, like on a variety show when an actor gets in a drunk driving accident or something — where you can’t re-shoot but you want to show him as little as possible, and they just become this figure you see in the background. But in this case, they went a step further.

girlfriday: Yeah the normal practice is to reduce the footage to a minimum, knowing that everyone knows why so-and-so isn’t in 90% of the show. But in this case, Na PD actually managed to cut completely around Jang Geun-seok, so that if you never read any entertainment news and just turned on the show, you’d think that Cha Seung-won and Yoo Hae-jin were the only two cast members to go to the island.

javabeans: I was looking for a glimpse of him and could only make out brief flashes of a hand, or the back of his head. On one hand, that’s impressive editing. I knew Na PD was good, but that is like god-level good.

girlfriday: Yes, it’s totally creepy, actually.

javabeans: On the other hand, I actually don’t know if I like that. Variety storytelling is all about good editing… but I don’t like this idea that you could create an entirely false narrative just with the editing. It reveals something about reality television in a really stark way that I’m not sure is a good thing.

girlfriday: That it has nothing to do with reality? Yup.

javabeans: We all know this about television and entertainment, but it’s a really bald example of just how manufactured it is. How can you just pretend that things happened a way that they didn’t?

girlfriday: I don’t know, especially when everyone already knows about Jang Geun-seok being on the island with them.

javabeans: Yeah, I honestly don’t think anybody would have had a problem with presenting him there, and then gradually phasing him out. We’d all know why, and Na PD has such goodwill among the viewership that everyone would have given him that understanding. Nobody would have blamed him for awkwardly trying to minimize Jang Geun-seok’s scandal.

girlfriday: But this is the thing about Korean media. It’s so skittish about scandal, even though the press is totally fanning the flames. Television is held to this bizarre standard, where they’re afraid to offend anyone in any way.

javabeans: Regardless of whether or not you even like Jang Geun-seok, I just feel like pretending he didn’t exist is a crappy thing to do.

girlfriday: It’s strange how in this one instance, the agility with which Na PD has edited Jang Geun-seok out makes it worse.

javabeans: My problem with it is with the principle of the matter, I think. It just feels wrong. Even if you were dealing with the most hated person on the planet (and Jang is far from that), you asked him on the show, so it feels like you should show him on the show. Just a little.

girlfriday: I know it’s terrible timing with the scandal breaking just before the show premiered, but it’s like bending the truth if we all pretend that he was never there to begin with.

javabeans: One thing that really shocked me about this scandal was seeing just how much netizens in Korea hate Jang Geun-seok. I knew that he wasn’t universally liked, and that he even admitted to not being very popular… but that’s worlds away from the active vitriol I saw spewed at him over this. People were actually blaming him for ruining the show and daring to stain Na PD’s career, like he had done it on purpose!

girlfriday: It was really shocking, to say the least, because for one thing, it’s a TAX scandal. He didn’t beat anybody, he didn’t drive drunk, and he didn’t take drugs. He even paid his taxes later, or so we’re told. But it seemed like people were just looking for an excuse to dump on him.

javabeans: Yes. Blame him for the thing he did wrong, sure. But the kind of commentary this garnered was really nasty in irrelevant ways; it was really interesting. I wonder if it’s because those other offenses are seen as “crimes of passion,” so to speak, where you have a lapse of judgment and do something dumb. But tax evasion could be seen as a sort of “rich people taking advantage of being rich” thing, which is a hot-button issue. It stokes the whole rise-up-against-the-one-percent sentiment.

girlfriday: I can see that, and I agree that people seem extra critical of chaebols and celebrities getting special treatment for anything, say army duty, or whatever.

javabeans: Good god, the only way Jang Geun-seok could have garnered more hate is if he evaded taxes in order to get out of army duty, or something.

girlfriday: Well then he’d have to move to Japan.

javabeans: On the upside, I guess we could thank him for giving us Sohn Ho-joon as the third babo (c’mon, he’s always gonna be the babo, right?) later when he joins the two hyungs. Way to turn that ship around, Na PD.

girlfriday: And OPPA-YA! Jung Woo went along on the trip, apparently. It was a mini Answer Me 1994 reunion, since he was too busy to go on the Youths Over Flowers trip with the boys.

javabeans: I loved Jung Woo’s response when interviewing about this Fishing Village trip, which was basically, “It was really touching and meaningful and I learned a lot. Would I go back? HAHAHA.” I wonder if it still pains him that he missed the Youths chance, because he seemed really disappointed that he had to film a movie while they got kidnapped on their trip of a lifetime.

girlfriday: It pains US, that’s for sure. Just think of all the wounds it would heal if we got to see Oppa and Chilbongie being bros!

javabeans: GASP. I didn’t even think about that particular aspect! Now I wish we could go back in time and make it happen. Can Grandpas in Jordan just be Oppa and Chilbongie in Jordan?

girlfriday: C’mon, Na PD. You totally owe us.

javabeans: It’s not like you don’t have the skills to make reality bend to your will. We know better now.

JKS put S.Korea on the world map for me. I first saw his work in September 2013 and since have caught up with all his recent dramas. I have read every interview translated in English and watched every interview on Youtube that was subtitled in English. I own every album he released solo or with Team H. I am extremely impressed with his acting, singing. I don't know Korean or Japanese, but that makes no difference to me. He is an amazing actor and only for his dramas I am happy to read English subtitles for 16-20 hours. Whenever I am stressed, I put earplugs on and listen to his playlist and his voice makes me forget my stress. He is very talented, hard working, sincere, honest, and genuine. He is an amazing son and a proud Korean. It was his high praise for his country and his love for Korea that made me learn more about Korea. I had a desire to visit Korea just because JKS always spoke with so much love and fondness for his country.

Now everything has changed. This whole episode has erased all the goodwill I had for Korea. I keep wondering how can a country treat their own young man with so much hatred, and cruelty. He has been working for over 22 years, most of his earnings are from other countries. One accounting mistake and everything is forgotten. It would appear that Korean media would happily bury him alive, if they could. I am so glad that at least his career as a singer is not trapped within the borders of Korea and his music is loved overseas. I have already pre-ordered his new album+dvd of "Monochrome" even though there is not even a teaser out. That is how much faith I have in his talent. I will continue to support him in every way I can. It is apparent after this fiasco that his own country and country men won't. And instead of visiting Korea to attend JKS's concert or see his country, I will rather visit Japan to see his concert. I hope some in Korea will think over what just happened in their country and for the sake of their young artists do some thinking about how they treat their talent. These artists are real people, with dreams, aspirations, living breathing humans. Would anyone like to be treated the way JKS has been? Would anyone like their children to be treated the way JKS has been??

and now the show is using JKS just to get good ratings... they are even bragging about the good editing done just to get rid of JKS.Hey people show some respect here... JKS is not a newbie in this industry.. He is an actor well-known for his acting skills and I think he has established a name for himself outside Korea. Yep he is not accepted in his own land but he is aware of it that's why he said he has to be number ONE in other country/place to make it balance. As what they say you can't please everyone. JKS just do what you deem is right.. There are many people who love you and will show their support especially during these ODD moments in your life...

Yes, Marie, I agree the show is most definitely using JKS's name to get more viewers. People are watching it not just to see the show, but how and where JKS's body parts are visible or his voice or his laughter. The title of this show should be "Spot JKS". People line up for hours to catch a glimpse of JKS, and here are people gloating at their fantastic editing skills to erase him. How twisted is that!!!!

Some who watched were Sukkie's fans waiting with anticipation the chance to see whether he'll appear.

actually the show got 10% ratings on the 1st episode of this season and people already know that they remove JGS part which is high ranging that this is a cable tv show (with cable tv you have to x2=rating)....i don't think this is just because of him...the show was already established by the 1st season artist...please don't make assumptions to make people hate JGS more...they are not bragging they are probably more sad because editing is not easy and you only got little time to do it...and there are reasons they pick him...it would have really been a good chance to show JGS other side if knets would at least give him the chance apparently they weren't ready for him yet.

Sounds very much like what they did with Park Bom in Season 1 of Roommate. They practically cut her very existence out of the show, and I felt sorry for her co-stars for being dragged into that kind of cover-up.

I'm not a particular fan of either JGS or PB, but I think a reasonable explanation was given in both cases, however, the overreaction of netizens completely swamped any room for rational discussion. It's pretty sickening.

We already know how "packaged" k-pop and k-dramas are, and how carefully their image is controlled, so reality tv shows wouldn't be an exception. But I guess the reality is that lobbyists for big business/politics still wield a lot of power in relation to censorship and what gets aired. Especially when tvN isn't yet one of the major broadcasting networks?

And he rejected this?
Much have been written about sponsors and I thought these are confined to men. It seems like there women sponsors too. If jks did not reject her, he could have been the 'darling of the press'. But good on him for saying 'no' to that amount of money.

I admire JKS because he is 'authentic' . He doesn't kiss anyone's butt to achieve his goals.

There are some comments that he is not a good son. He is - he talks a lot about the funny scenarios at home, his parents are constantly with him wherever he goes and he brings along his maternal and paternal grandparents. His fans know them. And he makes it his responsibility to wash his father and grandfather's cars.

The only thing I have against Jang Geun Suk is that his weepy character was one of the things that destroyed Beethoven Virus. Boy, just thinking of his dopey, smiling face while trying to conduct makes my toes curl... :)

After all the good things PD Na said about the oddball Jang Geun Seok, I actually started having a 'high' hope for him to be one of the few good men in the horrifyingly nasty k-bizz world~ the one that appreciates talents and wants to reach out to those who are not the 'mainstreams'. But then I learn my lesson that having such an expectation will only hurt. Sigh. It's a real pity that this happened and poor Geun Seok had to be 'out of sight' again, especially when his agency had actually clarified everything before. Media are indeed powerful enough to 'steer' people's minds. They create a 'bad image' by twisting info and won't even bother to check the damage. Oh well... I'm saying bye to this show, not even curious anymore after all the 'dramas'. I just hope that Geun Seok will find his way back sooner or later. He's among the few young K-actors I enjoy watching and I believe with his talent he'll be able to survive eventually... maybe starring in J-doramas or Chinese movies? He's still a hallyu star anyway.

This is so shameful......I really adored Na PD for all the amazing shows he has given us but editing a person completely is just ridiculous.
Couldn't they have just shown that JGS oppa was in the show but due to some reasons he had to discontinue---the netizens wouldn't have thrown stones at him!!!!
The tax scandal was not such a big disaster or something that the netizens are now putting on hateful comments about him.Sometimes I think that the international fans respect their idols/actors more than these netizens-who have no other work than to put hateful comments all over the internet.

it also happen to Song Hye Kyo and she was easily forgiven. Poor Jang, so many haters =(

we don't know the whole story…and till it is cleared they have to edit him out if this means there's a court hearing…because this could also damaged both sides of involved parties….
probably i am just hopeful that someday when the timing is right i will see JGS in a variety show not in other country but in korea because admit it or not it won't be the same success if it's not in your home country…even singers wanted always to be recognize by your countrymen because it is still your own home…which reminds me of Tablo and his story…hopefully it will also be a happy ending...

Some of the comments here are really... lol.
Comparing this situation to North Korea is undermining what the NK citizens are suffering. If SK is NK , JGK is probably now in labour camp or dead.

And thinking that Na PD is all powerful. Really? If Na PD is really that powerful, he should be able toset up his own television network instead of working for TVN.

and lastly, it is JGK who leave the show voluntarily

I was also thinking the same thing. Honestly, I don't feel like Na PD is this all powerful person who can just put whatever he wants on a show in regards to a Korean artist facing a "scandal." If his higher ups say edit him out completely, what can he do? After all, Korea is a very hierarchical country.

Also, some of these celebrities that people are mentioning, they were generally more like then JKS so even when something did happen, the recovery for them was probably easier. After all, you hate something and then a "scandal" is revealed? It's going to be that much worse.

I'm not saying what happened is right but at the same time I can't say what happened is a surprise.

All this hate over JGS's tax scandal… reminds me of Kang Ho Dong's.

I hope its all a misunderstanding ie issues with accountants and that he can survive this. im not a fan but i think all the hate he is getting is overboard.

My daughter is a fan of JKS. Thus, I came to know about this young man. I work as a tax policy advisor - and I am familiar with South Korea's tax policies, ditto with most countries in the OECD.

Now, what happened to JKS is an outright non-compliance of privacy and confidential clause in each country's tax legislation by the tax agency. As regulator, the tax agency is obligated by law to protect his identity at all cost.

There are many stages of enforcing a tax regulation. All tax agencies are required by law to "make it easy for taxpayers to pay taxes". There are many reasons why taxpayers sometimes miss to declare the exact amount and top reason based on surveys is because the tax agency speaks in jargon. Every legislation should be translated or communicated to tax payers in such a way that a layman (including a street sweeper) can understand the legislation. This is what happened to the accounting firm that JKS hired to file his taxes. The accounting firm missed some lines relative to the notes to financial statements. If you know accounting, you are aware that even $0.01 cent must be looked for so that everything will balance. When his company's financial statements were balanced the tax agency told JKS' company that their payment was not enough. JKS' company agreed and they paid the shortfall amount. This is very common.

Take note that, JKS' company was not referred to prosecution. Meaning to say that all errors were addressed and that they actually complied with legislation. All through this process, JKS' identity must be safe and secured. But it did not happen that way. As a regulator, the tax agency VIOLATED and IS NOT COMPLIANT WITH their own tax legislation. Why was he identified and including the amount due?

All employees of the govt tax agency under OECD countries are required by law to sign a declaration of privacy and confidentiality. Why was he identified?
JKS' name was a toast of the media, the entertainment world, netizens etc. Someone among them fed the media about JKS.

The tax agency violated the rights of JKS as a citizen of Korea. The tax agency, if morale, must initiate the investigation of this violation in privacy. If they refused to do so, JKS has the right to file a complain with SK's Office of the Ombudsman or Privacy Commissioner if they have one. This kind of violation must never happen especially that his tax issue is not subject to prosecution.

If this happens in my country, we will initiate our investigation and seek that person who leaked the details to the media. Dismiss him from office and charge him in court such that he will never be able to work again in the government sector.

Thanks Celia for your clear explanation. This show that he is not guilty of 'tax evasion' instead it's only the accounting firm he hired to do his tax make the mistake. Poor JKS for the 'hate' that he gets.
