Running Man: Episode 228

It’s a winter wonderland on Running Man this week, where bizarre weather forces our cast to find the one spot on Earth that will save them from the elements. Getting there turns out to be a feat in of itself because all kinds of weather conditions stand in their way. Despite the freezing cold, this episode is sure to warm you with the laughs and might even leave you fanning yourself at the close proximity only subzero temperatures can bring.

EPISODE 228. Broadcast on January 4, 2015.

Happy 2015, Running Man! Our cast sends their warmest new year greetings to the viewers, then turn to the snow globe behind them to greet our first guests of the year: Lee Seung-gi and Moon Chae-won, co-stars of the upcoming movie Today’s Love.

Kwang-soo’s chivalrous attempts are shut down since Seung-gi is already taking care of his leading lady. At least he isn’t the only one since both Suk-jin and Jae-suk are shoved off, too.

It’s been awhile since Chae-won has been on the small screen, and Jae-suk’s hot temper has her remark in a quiet voice that he’s changed quite a bit since they’ve last met. “He’s a variety show gangster!” The others call him.

Seung-gi helps Kwang-soo out with the reminder that the giraffe and Chae-won were former co-stars on KBS’s Nice Guy. She admits that Kwang-soo drops a line with a polite text every so often, and that he’s the one who starts the conversation. Lol.

She says she would initiate the conversation first, but the others fill in the blanks for her. Perhaps she found out that Kwang-soo wasn’t that impressive? Or that she felt burdened by his forwardness? When Jong-kook says Kwang-soo commonly mistakes a little kindness for romantic interest, she has a moment of realization. Kwang-soo: “No, it’s not like that!” Hahaha.

Time to announce teams and all the guys drop blatant hints to Taek PD about whose team they want to end up with. Both Jae-suk and Kwang-soo are noticeably disappointed to be teamed up with Seung-gi, who returns the sentiment: “I’m not all that happy with it, either!”

When Chae-won retreats towards the trio vs. the others, Seung-gi astutely points out that his co-star doesn’t want to be with any of the others. Her presence even as Gary momentarily forget about Monday Girlfriend Ji-hyo, who’s not expecting anything either.

Chae-won is teamed with Gary and Haha, who are allegedly enamored with women. That leaves SpartAce and Suk-jin as the last remaining team. Thus, our three teams will be duking it out in Today’s Weather race.

Currently, the world experience all sorts of unusual weather, a premise that makes our cast crack up. Even Seung-gi has to question the absurdity of it all: “Why is [the premise] always like this whenever I show up?”

There is of course, one place on Earth that will remain safe, and their mission is to collect hints and find that location. Once they step outside into the freezing cold, Jae-suk says that Seung-gi always comes to visit in the dead of winter. Haha hopes that they don’t end up in the water today.

In the car, Seung-gi is told that Chae-won is in good hands with Gary and Haha, who will make sure to break the variety ice. Sure enough, they start with the compliments and encourage Chae-won to send adorable heart gestures towards the camera. Cut to: SpartAce and Suk-jin sitting in silence. HAHAHA.

It’s sunny out on their walk to their first mission as Seung-gi recalls his flying chair experience from last time made the best use of his fear of heights. Jae-suk can’t stand to see Kwang-soo act like he was once close with Chae-won, which prompts her to ask how long Kwang-soo’s texts usually are. Short, Jae-suk replies, and Chae-won says she gets pretty long ones.

That only fans the flames about Kwang-soo’s intentions, and they even question whether Wang Ji-hye had it right about that dongsaeng co-star with whom there was a little something going on.

Our teams’ jaws drop when they’re met with a shrubified container and a muddy pool below. They immediately gripe alongside Seung-gi, saying that they always have the most difficult missions whenever he comes.

After suiting up, everyone climbs on and no one is excited. Chae-won climbs towards the front of the container upon hearing the words “drastic incline.” As the incline increases, Jae-suk rages at the staff and almost slips down. The rules are simple: last man or woman standing wins one point, and the first team to win three point, wins.

With that, the incline slowly rises and so do their fears. One by one, they start sliding off until Kwang-soo, Ji-hyo, and Chae-won are left. The latter kicks Kwang-soo to loosen his grip, and Ji-hyo uses that opportunity to attack.

But Chae-won hangs on and the container grows steeper. She grabs onto Ji-hyo and they both slide into the water simultaneously, both earning their teams the first point.

The ladies sit out for the next round, and when Jong-kook catches Haha and Kwang-soo exchange glances, he says you can practically hear the sound of their scheming eyes. Suk-jin is targeted as soon as the whistle blows, but then Jong-kook takes the opportunity to push allll six of the other guys off the container.

While that picks up another point, it also leaves Suk-jin to fend for himself with the others. After Jae-suk wins the third round, the other four crowd around Suk-jin. All of them end up in the muddy water, but it’s Seung-gi who’s the last to fall in.

Another round later leads to a Betrayal Trio battle between Suk-jin, Haha, and Kwang-soo in a current 2:2:2 tie. They push and shove one another as the incline grows steeper… and it’s Haha who starts pushing the other two off to win it.

There are two hints available, and it seems like Seung-gi may have caught a peek of Team Ji-hyo’s hint. Team Chae-won’s hint suggests a place that gives off oxygen, prevents global warming, and the weather is always clear, which makes them think of a tree.

Team Ji-hyo’s keyword is “tourist attraction,” the same word Seung-gi saw, along with the word for “high pressure.” He and his teammates must win the next mission or they’ll be really clueless. Seung-gi: “We’ll turn the car keys then.”

Then it’s time to take on an Ice Age-themed food mission at an ice rink, and the team that succeeds first will take first place. Jae-suk and Kwang-soo freely admit that Seung-gi knows bits of the hint, which he gladly shares with the class.

It’s the first time Chae-won’s hearing the keywords (since they belong to SpartAce and Suk-jin) and while it initially seems like Seung-gi’s trying to get her to come clean with hers, he’s the one telling her exactly what he knows instead. SpartAce is none too happy that other teams stole glances, so they’ll do the same.

Seung-gi’s team sits down first for their main course (“Ramyun!” “Sujebi!” “Steak!”) and uncover to see a plate… of a steak-shaped ice. Ha, it’s a block of ice. Seung-gi: “I usually have my steak very well-done. Please cook it some more.”

They’ll need to divide and eat the ice steak in thirds, all within 60 seconds. Kwang-soo stuffs the small third into his mouth, and there’s melted ice-spit flowing out of his mouth. Needless to say they don’t succeed, but their brain freeze expressions are pretty priceless.

Chae-won’s team has the ice steak too, and Haha speedily cuts a small piece for her. While he and Gary flail as they eat, Chae-won takes quiet bites. She even goes ahead to feed him a small bite, but her team can’t finish in time, either.

None of the teams succeed in the first round, so they’ll be playing the Pepero game with their next item: a stick of ice. The team with the shortest ice left wins, and they mustn’t use their hands nor let the ice fall. Seung-gi says he’s got weak front teeth.

Jong-kook worries that the melted spit can travel along the ice, but that’s not anything anyone wants to think about. So Kwang-soo and Jae-suk start biting, even turning their heads, to everyone’s shock. Hahahaha.

They leave behind a small piece (and momentarily lose it on the ice, ha) and drool as Taek PD tries to measure its longest side. It’s 1.4 cm. Chae-won initially tries to avoid playing with Gary, but the people wanna see what they wanna see.

So she decides to just go for it, to Gary’s delight and possibly Ji-hyo’s disappointment. Everyone is surprised when she admits she hasn’t played this game since her college days, and she clarifies that they had to pass along ice cubes with their teeth. Gary’s expression is all, I wanna play THAT game.

Gary and Chae-won take bites on both ends and draw near, but the ice slips at the last second. Haha jokes that they should do a do-over with the remaining 4.5 cm. Ji-hyo points out that both her male teammates have said no, to which Gary offers, “Shall I? I could do this a hundred times with Ji-hyo.”

Playing rock, paper, scissors has SpartAce paired together anyway. It’s the first time for these two, and Gary seems surprisingly okay with it. Just as the others start teasing that unknown feelings can arise, the rod breaks in half. Aw, c’mon!

Anyhow, that’s how Team Seung-gi wins first place and Team Ji-hyo in second. Everyone is eager to sneak a glance at each other’s hints, and I’ll say that Haha’s pretty clever for looking through a camera in hopes to get a close-up.

They grow upset when they’re told to take the hint with them: “Why were we trying to sneak around then?!”

The clue that says something is at its original place twice a day has Seung-gi thinking of a clock. Ji-hyo wonders if their clue hints at lake or ocean.

I love how even Taek PD finds his own premise ridiculous, seeing as he can’t keep it together as he says the world is experiencing unusual weather and the people are also undergoing strange changes. At least the rest of the production crew cracks up, too.

Here, they must find the R-stickered vaccine to stop the mutations. Jae-suk gives Seung-gi the gentle reminder to stop talking like he knows what’s going on when he actually doesn’t. Kwang-soo yells out when he discovers a box, only to find it empty.

Jae-suk stumbles upon a jail, wondering why it’s here when they’re just assigned to search the place for a vaccine. It certainly is strange, so Jae-suk decides that they must hurry. And that’s when they hear the first announcement—Jong-kook is eliminated.

Just a minute ago, SpartAce was traveling together when a masked “Monster” grabbed Jong-kook, catching him off-guard. Aha, so this is the consequence of the mutation, exhibiting itself in extreme aggression.

The “monster” picks up Jong-kook like a doll (!!!) and pins him to the ground. Ripping off the Monster’s nametag does nothing, and the monster stamps Jong-kook’s foot. Seung-gi wonders if this game requires using their noggins vs. strength, an idea the flashbacks quickly shut down.

Jae-suk, on the other hand, feels surprisingly good since he won’t have to deal with Jong-kook now. A little later, the Monster attacks Haha—after looking into the Kwang-soo runs from the scene and Jae-suk has witnessed the event from the window. Everyone’s reactions: “What the…?”

Ji-hyo is on her toes too, since she’s the Monster. She screams in terror… and the camera zooms out to reveal Seung-gi. Caption: Noona, it’s me. She still runs. Hahahah.

When they run into Chae-won, they fill her in about the mysterious man on the loose. But just as they reach the end of the stairs, Gary is attacked and they scatter.

They regroup and share descriptions about the masked rotund man whom Ji-hyo says is a MMA fighter. She adds that they must find that vaccine. Meanwhile, poor Cha-won is the only one left for her team. She jumps a foot when a VJ unexpectedly pops out of the corner.

At the sound of her terrified yelp downstairs, Jae-suk and the Easy Brothers decide to head upstairs. It happens to be another VJ, but then a burly yell has them running. It’s the Monster and they find refuge… in Ji-hyo’s hiding spot. Ha, way to lead the Monster to you.

She wonders how they can oust the monster (Kwang-soo: “Can’t we punch him in the gut?”) and suggests Kwang-soo. But then they hear more cries and Kwang-soo tells the VJs not to go out to film because they’ll just get reeled in.

Those sounds were of Suk-jin’s elimination, and we catch up with Kwang-soo to see him marking up his foot so that the Monster doesn’t have anywhere to stamp. He and the others scour the grounds, and then Jae-suk makes a quick U-turn at the sight of the Monster.

Jae-suk and Kwang-soo run in circles until the Monster literally drives them into a corner. Then he peels off Kwang-soo’s sock (the clean one without the markers) to eliminate him.

Though out of breath, the Monster starts running when he spots Ji-hyo. She hides, and he discovers her on her knees, pleading for mercy. He kindly stamps her hand. Ha.

And then there were three: Chae-won, Seung-gi, and Jae-suk. Seung-gi checks behind a bookshelf to discover the vaccine—a bracelet they must put on the Monster. He puffs up with pride and runs past Chae-won to look for Jae-suk.

Seung-gi shows her the bracelet, which she pulls out of his hand. He suggests that she lure the Monster in, but she smiles and tries to coax him into handing the bracelet over. After taking it from him, Chae-won feeds him the chocolate she was going to use as bait in exchange. Haha, they’re adorable.

He suggests that they should stick together, but that’s when she reminds him that they’re not on the same team. He tells her to return the bracelet then, so she says, “I gave you my chocolate. Spit it out.”

Seung-gi tries a different tactic — if she succeeds, they’ll share the hint. But Chae-won doesn’t find that fair if she’ll be doing all the work and putting herself in danger. Which leads to more bickering of “Give me back my bracelet!” and “Give me my chocolate then!” between them.

What’s even cuter is that Seung-gi is more than willing to buy her some chocolate right then and there, telling the staff to look into whether the grocery will deliver.

Jae-suk finally re-joins them, and Chae-won’s argument basically boils down to that Seung-gi may have found the bracelet, but she can have it now because she gave him a chocolate. This really has become The Chocolate Scandal, hasn’t it? Seung-gi: “Wait here, and I’ll throw it back up.”

Jae-suk’s counterargument that Seung-gi should use the vaccine bracelet since he found it only leads back to more chocolate demands. So they decide to hunt down some chocolate to bargain with.

Just then, Seung-gi has second thoughts and lets her take it, but he won’t help at all. That has her singing a different tune, so they agree upon sharing the hint if she succeeds.

Once they lure the Monster out of the darkness, Chae-won tries to get him to expose his wrist. It doesn’t work, and the Monster starts running. He doesn’t get far either, and when Jae-suk falls on his butt, the Monster takes his chance.

He misses Jae-suk though, and his dedication has Chae-won remark that the Monster is working too hard. When the Monster targets Seung-gi, it’s a team effort but Jae-suk finally secures the bracelet onto the strong man, mixed martial arts fighter Kim Ji-hoon.

As promised, Seung-gi shares the hint (“Running Man’s favorite location”) with Team Chae-won. Everyone racks their brains in their respectives cars, and the final mission location shows nine various landscapes, including mountains, oceans, etc.

Again, the teams must correctly identify the one place in the world where the weather is sunny and safe. All the teams seem certain about their guesses, though they’re warned that an incorrect guess will lead to “rain,” as in, a downpour.

Everyone climbs onto the mud flat platform, and we see why: the “Running Man’s favorite location” was a key one for Haha and Seung-gi, the later of whom realized that the tide comes in twice a day. It took at all of the landscapes for Team Ji-hyo to make their guess.

Well it’s all or nothing, and the cast stares in awe at seeing the “rain” that falls behind them in the other landscapes. After a long, suspenseful pause, the mud flat is the correct answer, and Suk-jin remarks that they’ve all come so far now.

What a great way to start off 2015 on a high note, and it looks like we’ll get more of Seung-gi and Chae-won next week with our favorite grump: Seojinnie.

moon chae won was boring as hell man. that's the problem when only one female guest is invited - it cultivates a princess complex. i realise when you invite a group of female guests instead of one single lone female guest, the dynamics changes naturally into a competitive one. 'cos the desire to stand out, and not falter behind as a loser x damsel in distress, forces guests to be bold, attentive and hungry for the limelight.

moon chae won wasn't just boring, she was near retarded. she couldn't follow the simplest things and tried to act cute rather than try to understand and win the games fair and square (ok so maybe fairness isn't a benchmark in RM, but at least others try their best and don't cut each other slack)
plus she didn't have anything to add to the conversations or interactions and just kept smiling vaguely or blinking stupidly through most of the show. I know RM isn't The Genius but some kind of standard for its contestants would be nice. Atleast cut out on the pretty dumbs.

If calling people names helps make you feel better, then what does that say about your self-confidence and maturity?

Also, you do know that comments can be tracked by IP right? Lols, changing your Name doesn't mean people can't identify you.

Woah! I found her quite boring and yawn-inducing but calling someone is a retard is... Wow, calm down on the hate you're spewing. Express opinions rather than calling people derogatory names. That's disgusting and shows a lot of your lack of character.

That's kinda harsh! The way you comment really shows your character. :(

well it cannot be helped that she is an actress, not an entertainer which can be two very different things. Some people good at their work but not that good at making things funny, they might even feel so awkward. But calling someone retarded is too much. What did she do wrong to you?

It's kind of funny you said that since her aegyo chocolate scene and skinship with Seunggi caused a big stir (some good and some bad). She's not great at variety and doesn't do it often, which she'll admit. I think she did well.

that's the problem. that chocolate debate is the most exciting thing she'd come up with in the entire episode. there's nothing awful being shy or introverted, it's just that such a personality inhibits the dynamics of a variety show like running man. as a regular viewer of RM, and a neutral person towards all the guests (i don't know 90% of them), i do have certain expectations of an action packed, adrenaline driven, and funny variety show.

i never watch any episode of RM with the intention to dislike any guests (I know nothing about most of them), and with every hope for the guest to entertain me as much as possible (c'mon, give the RM cast a run for their money!), so my comments are all entirely based on the guest's personality and performance in the episode.

again, nothing about moon chae won. nothing wrong being shy and introverted and gentle. just not the kind of guest that makes a running man episode memorable.

tada.

Tbh, I think most celebrities are introverted tho, so it's nothing about introversion. It's not about that sort of personality, is what that is underlying under that. You can be shy and introverted but at the same time be actually a fun person too. Perhaps she's not that. It's a little impolite to just say that that sort of guests won't fit well into the episode. RM itself is getting boring nowadays anyway.

Well, it is hard to be fun for a one timer guest in a variety show when one has shy and introverted personality plus a tendancy to feel nervous. I mean, it takes time to warm up. There are many celebrities who are not introverted, there are many who are extroverted. It just that, they wants to keep their privacy.

0

Most celebrities are introvert?hmmp..Not really..That's why they become celebrities..Shy?I think yes..Most of them especially actors and actresses are really shy when they go to variety shows but it doesn't mean that they are introvert people..They are shy maybe bcoz' they rarely do variety shows and most of them are not good at it. Actually its really hard to tell their personalities bcoz' we don't know them personally but from i observed from Moon Chae Won she is really shy among people that she doesn't know whether its on variety show or not. TBH honest i was really shocked when i first know MCW in Nice Guy..She has that strong aura and confidence when she's acting but she was a total opposite of it when i watch bts and interviews..

0

like JB I don't know most guest on RM so I don't have any negative bias on them but about MCW and Choco scene,it was funny at first but when she continued arguing while she didn't have any chance of doing and she's wise enough to know it,it got annoying, although LSG and YJS smiled but you can see how frustrated they are, they had to stop game for a long time just to convince her and even in attacking monster she kept vaccine but thanks to YJS it ended else they had to film for longer time or all of them had failed.and what makes it more bothering for me was when she said "He should just do enough and go home". I said how arrogant she is ,monster isn't main guest but still he has a role and should do his best.I hope next episode she do better

agree with ork that the chocolate debate was hella annoying. the 'monster' was actually creating a lot of tension and adrenaline thru' the chase, and as the program reaches a potentially climatic scene, moon chae won had to 'try to be funny' and draw YJS and LSG into a debate about barter trade, breaking the entire momentum. it was very frustrating to watch as a viewer. i mean, 'hello? the monster is coming, are you gonna devise a strategy and launch an attack, or are you going on forever about barter trading chocolates?' her sense of comic timing and action timing, and variety program awareness is very poor.

I found the whole chocolate-argument really funny, it was just so silly I couldn´t stop laughing. And LSG´s frustration with her was even better, plus "what-why-why now" YJS when he arrived at the scene. I thought Moon Chae-won did a great job as a guest, she definitely worked hard.

0

Oh man, when I watched, I didn't think she did it for the comedy - I genuinely wondered at her intelligence when she was trying to pull chocolate-bracelet swap.

I felt like, because she was so pretty, that most of her conversations in real life have been as nonsensical as that. You can tell from Seung-gi's reactions to her. First it was "aw/wow she's cute" and then "gah, let me placate her with whatever she's stuck on so that we can go on." and finally "manipulate & 'threaten' to get any where with the story."

So it seemed as she goes off thinking and 'reasoning' whatever way she always has, quietly and meekly, while people would argue at her, or coax her to do something. I don't wonder at her being an actress - pretty and easy to work.

0

Lol She's actually really bright. xp

0

@CZ

Yeah, I'm sure he wasn't thinking that. He's really close friends with Chae Won and she's not in any way lacking in intelligence. If you guys didn't figure it out they were promoting their movie there..the whole push and pull relationship.

I guess it depends on the guest's personality itself. Han Hyo Joo also was the lone female guest but she was great!

Han Hyo-joo is one of my fav female guests in RM! She's doesn't do variety often herself, but unlike MCW, she's game, competitive and totally fun. The girl is hilarious too and gets along with the cast really well. It's can just be different personalities in play, but I have to agree with JB that MCW was extremely boring and had a major princess complex.

I think you really can't expect every one to be good on variety show.Even Song Ji Hyo who's been there for years is quite boring. Moon Chae Won personally is really introverted and shy,she even said before that she's boring lol...But idk why so said that she had major princess complex when it was the casts who treated her like that..

Song Ji Hyo Boring ????? WTF

0

What I mean is if you compare her to other casts,i don't mean that she is boring at all and of course monday couple us very funny and hilarious...

0

btw, i just wanna clarify the 'princess complex' i mentioned in my earlier post. please read again.

perhaps in moon chae won's case, it'll be more accurate to say she behaved or came across as 'a damsel in distress' which led to RM cast to feel the need to be more accommodating towards her, that translates into a 'princess treatment'. i mean c'mon the RM cast has a duty to look after their guests (depending on their comfort level and personality), so i don't think they should be faulted for 'being nicer' to her since she looked so helpless.

0

I have not watched this ep myself but somehow, based on your previous comments on MCW vs. HHJ, it does sounds that you have some personal issue towards her? One thing I know, she is an introvert type of girl so variety show is not fit for her.

Previous comments? LOL, it's nice to know you've been keeping tabs on my comments since I can't even remember the last time I compared HHJ to MCW. As for having a personal issue against MCW, I don't. Why? Because I don't know her and ain't immature enough to be wasting my time commenting just to hate *shrugs*. It's an opinion I have of her after watching the episode - princess complex and boring personality inclusive - that I have every right to voice out.

Regarding HHJ - lol, it's more like some MCW fans have some sort of inferiority complex against her or something. I have no idea why there's such bitterness between the two fandoms but I belong to none. Its hilarious from the side lines though, I gotta admit.

0

I just mentioned it since I do remember you bought up HHJ's name in some of the previous entries that linked to MCW.
Sorry if what I wrote offend you ^^.

0

Lol, you didn't offend me. More like I'm curious because I'm somehow tagged as a 'HHJ fan' for saying HHJ has a much better variety personality in comparison to MCW. It's certainly the truth to me, but that hardly matters since variety isn't even their part time jobs.

0

Like I mentioned, I do remember you writes about how you love HHJ in some casting articles. So, thought you are a fan. But if you say not then, sorry for the mistake :)

0

Lol Moon Chae Won fans have no problem with Han Hyo Joo. But some of HHJ's fans always make it a point to put MCW down, and that's surely grating after awhile. You certainly seem to favor one over the other, as a non-fan, and you're not helping the fandom issue by first unnecessarily pitting one against the other, and then insulting one entire fandom.

And like another commenter remarked, how did she have a princess syndrome when it was the cast that treated her like a princess? She's quite soft-spoken and delicate in demeaner, that's just her nature, but she was still game and participated in everything, even showing a competitive side that wasn't overbearing.

I thought she did really well just being herself. No laugh-out-loud, slap-sticky moments, but definitely cute and pleasant to watch. Especially her anecdote about her college version of the ice peppero game lol. This is a great episode IMO and I can't wait for Seo-jinnie in the next episode lol.

0

@liaahx - Honestly, I'm not here to help resolve/uncomplicate fandom issues people have. I couldn't care less for stuff like that so if my comment somehow is taken as 'putting MCW down' as a 'HHJ fan' then sorry, but I'm not sorry whatsoever. I pointed out that her personality isn't fit for variety the way HHJ's is - which is a name someone else brought up therefore the comparison.

Yes of course I favor HHJ in variety! I've listed out the reasons why she's much much better. As for the 'princess syndrome' comment - the cast treats a person from the way they act. If you don't act like a princess you won't be treated like one. That's how I look at it, and if you see it a different way, then that's cool. I don't think I forced you to think the way I do. Anyway, this is somehow sounding like some sort of fanwar which I don't have the patience to get involved in. So: agree to disagree.

0

" If you don’t act like a princess you won’t be treated like one. "
Then can you pls pin point where the exact scene where she acted like a princess?MCW is not really physical and she was really shy, right from the start of the show the casts already treated her that way..

0

Hi everyone, I had no intention of offending anyone when I brought up HHJ's name. And I believe I didn't said anything negative about MCW either. It was just a response to the previous commenter, and HHJ just came to my mind coz I found that episode with Go Soo really memorable. I think the woodcutting mission first appeared in there too. But I really loved the eating mission there; it was so fun to watch.

0

Yeah, it is a quite well known thing that she's shy and reserved with those she's not familiar with but very outgoing once you get to know her and that confirmed by both Song Joong Ki and Joo Won. Her type of personality isn't fit for a variety show and she is fully aware of this as well.. but for some reasons, she agreed to appear on RM. Hopefully, some people won't be too judgmental over what they have seen in a variety show.

0

@Mandy

Lols, agree to disagree. I have watched RM for three years and never judged a guest purely based on performance or attitude. It takes the fun out of watching RM.

The fun part of the show is when the RM team has to fit with each guests different personalities and perceptions to try to win a game. There have been aggressive guests, shy guests, "useless" guests, and "proactive" guests. But I'm not limited enough to consider a variety program, especially a one-time appearance, as the defining basis for a guest. And definitely don't "judge" an episode harshly b/c it may not be as "exciting."

Just b/c a grapefruit is usually more sour than sweet, doesn't mean I won't enjoy a sweet grapefruit. Lols, learn to appreciate the differences of people and situations...maybe that is a truer sign of your maturity rather than proclaiming you are not immature.

0

@kgrl

Whoops, okay then. For me to be 'mature', I have to appreciate every guest's 'situation' irrelevant of what they make me feel. Got it. Pointing out that MCW is completely dry and such a huge bore because to be deemed 'mature' by some, people aren't allowed to form harsh opinions on what they see. Makes absolute sense and really shows how mature you are when you don't realize the point of TV is to attract different types of reaction to different people. I'm not here to appreciate everyone even they're standing there doing nothing because I expect to laugh in a variety show. If I don't, then it means the guest/episode isn't doing it for me and I'll be expressing it as much as I want. That's a viewer's right.

Your grapefruit analogy is amusing. Except it doesn't represent anything much. I like fruits when they're sweet but don't like them when they aren't. Just like I like RM when the guests/episodes are fun and don't enjoy them when they aren't. I know it's kinda hard to understand but it is just that simple.

0

@Mandy

Lol Sure, agree to diagree. However, did it ever occurred to you that the cast were fond of MCW and found her cute, and so were just being kind towards her on their own? She didn't demand them to be attentive towards her, they were doing so of their own accord, maybe because she is a pretty female guest (as in likely the case of Gary, HaHa, and Suk Jin, lol) or that they know she's shy and was nervous about doing variety. It just goes to show how great the cast of Running Man is. She didn't seem above what was asked of her and participated in everything, even showing some spunk in some of the challenges lol, so I don't see where you get princess sydrome behavior from.

This is beside the topic, but Song Ji Hyo too was so sweet. It's not highlighted in the episode, but in the background on their way to the car, you can see Ji Hyo and Chae Won walking arm in arm lol. And Ji Hyo helping Chae Won get up out of the mud, and Chae Won jumping behind Ji Hyo for a peak at their clue, and other small instances. Lol I thought it was so cute that they were bonding. If people are saying the female players in this episode were boring, fine. But I personally found them both really cute and certainly enjoyable to watch xp.

0

@Mandy

Perhaps a more apt anecdote is Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham. Keep your preconceptions limited, mind open, and you might just amaze yourself on what you can learn, appreciate, and glean from experiences.

You are free to say and think whatever it is you want. However, since you are in a public forum, it is also within others' rights to react to your comments. Free speech is a double-edged sword.

0

@kgrl

Honestly, your analogies just sound so out of context to me. Can't keep an 'open mind' when someone is boring me to tears. It's bad = it's bad. But LOL, I'll just keep getting amused and pass over it.

As for freedom of speech being a double edged sword - heck sure it is and applied to everyone here. No one stopped you from expressing why you find my opinion not to your liking. If you felt I did, then that's your bad *shrugs*. Just the same, I won't shy away from doing the exact same. Case closed, I suppose.

0

@Mandy

Sure, your opinions are yours, and you're free to make them, but it's unfair for you to be so dismissive and declare "case closed" when others are trying to reason with you with counterpoints to your opinions. Indeed, a double edged sword: if you're able to dish it, you better be sure you can take it too. Cause everyone else has as much right to dish it right back.

I think you entirely missed the points Kgrl was making. Rather, you're pretty much validating exactly why Kgrl's comment so aptly applies.

Exactly, which is why it's always good advice to rise above their immaturity and prejudice. They may think they aren't biased, putting people down, or immature...but anyone with more rationality, openness, and maturity can see through their mentality.

It's OK to have different opinions, that's what makes it fun to watch entertainment. But to purposely point out/target specific entertainer's "flaws" without mentioning others' "flaws" or give fair and valid reasons is only going to come off as being biased against one specific entertainer.

Lols, Moon Chae Won fans should be used to this. It's not the first time whenever there is MCW news, there's always the mention of HJH. For the sake of the 2 women's friendship, just have to be the bigger person.

0

But why though? They are (with Seung Gi) great friends and often meet up since their drama together that was almost 6 years ago. Srsly, she's like that, and criticizing her for what? Actualy, if she just agreed on leaving them alone and lost, it wouldn't be as exciting. She made it more exciting by creating internal conflict between the cast.

L-O-FUCKING-L! I'm a Hyo Joo fan but even I think the HHJ vs. MCW fanwars are ridiculous, ESPECIALLY when the two are like besties. I don't know what you're talking about from what I see, most of the time, the arguments stems from MCW fans being butthurt over HHJ being acknowledged and MCW not (IE this post: http://www.dramabeans.com/2014/08/han-hyo-joo-takes-on-dual-characters-in-beauty-inside/). Note the butthurt MCW fans throwing a hissy fit over "... Han has really asserted herself as the actress of her generation..."

Like there are MCW fans in here being defensive and crying "Fan war!" over someone saying HHJ was more enjoyable for them to watch than MCW.

But that's all I'll say because I don't want someone saying I'm part of the problem, blah blah blah.

So all I'll say is that both sides need to learn the 5 Gs: Good God Get a Grip Girl.

Lol I don't see MCW fans ever bringing HHJ up at all. We certainly don't compare them to each other unnecessarily,

0

I know many of the post from the below links are old, but you can see how her fans always dissed MCW from the BL with personal attacks. Go search the thread to look for those comments. You can not find such posts in MCW's thread or site that attacked HHJ like how her fans did. So, we certainly didn't start the 'war'

http://forums.soompi.com/en/discussion/22327/han-hyo-joo-한효주/p318

Can you see how childish some of your fellow fans were/are with their hate? that's just few examples. not including the random pop up comments from time to time in public site.

0

@gegege I read this before and I really felt bad coz' i love them both and they are close friend in real life.. I think this was started during BL coz' MCW got a lot of popularity even she was a second lead and a rookie..And everytime MCW get recognition they are really angry about it..They openly bashed MCW in an open thread how much more in website designated only for HHJ..

0

@I

Yeah. So who exactly feels inferior/insecure.. it is up to each of us to decide.

scary.

and the i have rewatched the choclate scandal a 100 times. seung gi and chaewon is sooo adorable!!!!!

even in 3 meals a day his guest episode recorded the highest rating for the show.

This ep is kinda fun and enjoyable but the way RM treat guests is pretty annoying and boring.

When every female guests appear in RM, we'll gonna see like RM wanna be w/ her team, RM leave SJY behinds and keep her pairing w/ JSJ (i hope they team up and win!), RM don't wanna win her and indeed quote of the day "you're really beautiful"

If they invite 2 female guests, The spotlight will shine to the fame or beautiful one. Not to mention Mongji who will disappear in any game. sometime, i think girl, you're seriously prettier than guests. lol

I find LSG is mocking himself bc they have MSW, he's nothing (ok it's jk and yes it's script to make the show fun)

No against MSW because i think she's great when she help JS and SG fight the monster, it's clearly see that she's not a weak female guest. she wanna win and i like her that way.

Some of female guests i like are Gong hyo jin, Son ye jin, Wang ji hye for example. The tough and easy going girls who are really fit to RM and make show is funnier and laughable with.

RM is the fun show and if they have a guests who don't wanna to be treat like vip guest, it would be better.

From what I've seen from the PDs actions thus far, I won't put it pass them to script SA to fail the mission or even tell them to do it a second time to fail if they succeeded.
Since SA succeeding is deemed harmful to the show's existing loveline.

Why are people bashing MCW?! I think she was very cute in this episode. Yes she isn't like other female guests - outgoing. But she is funny in her own way. Who didn't like the bit between LSG and her and the chocolate? I found that cute. I think she would've been better with people she knows - aka LSG and LKS.

And was I the only one who noticed the high-five at the end of the episode MCW initiated with Gary and HaHa? :D

She isn't boring - she is just introvert and shy. She is very cute and funny with people she knows. And her co-stars said so: that at first she is very shy but becomes more outgoing.

She herself said that she isn't good with variety shows. That's why she didn't promote Nice Guy with SJK on Running Man years ago. So I was surprised to see her doing it now. I think she did well and I'm looking forward to the next episode with them.

Then as they begin a easy 'find the box' game - it turns into a horror/thriller with people jumping out behind walls/corners, people being taken out by a 'Monster'.... lolll it was really exciting to watch, and I can even feel the excitement/adrenaline for these 5-year pros being thrilled by the sudden action.

MCW wasn't the most exciting female guest (the chaebol girlfriends ep holds the title there for me) but I did laugh pretty hard at the chocolate bargain - the guys were just so flummoxed by the whole thing! In a way she was right, she'd seen an opening and made a deal, and it wasn't the most honorable deal but oh well. That's why it was kind of nice to see LSG turn it right back around on her so effectively.

Song Ji-hyo doesn't miss being the female center of attention, from the looks of it. She's a regular cast member, she does it every week, and other than being a steady and clever team member she doesn't really need to be the "girl" role they seem to require. Hell, she doesn't bother dressing up or doing her hair anymore either. She shows up, plays the game, goes home, probably like most of us who've had a highly physical job for a while. I kind of like that she has placed her outside of the typical girl role so completely.

The third segment (find the serum while keeping out of the Monster's clutches) was easily the highlight of ep. 228. In fact, I don't think I would have minded if the whole episode consisted of this game -- it was that funny and exhilarating.

The following were the highlights for me:

1. The palpable screams of genuine fear and panic among the RM regulars and guests. Man, their reactions were so spontaneous and the Monster's timing (when he pounced at his hapless prey) was exquisite. I guess it helped that there was no warning or hint that this was going to happen.

2. Kwang-soo -- his humongous feet and his shaking finger. Also, I wonder what possessed him to think that blackening the soles of his feet would deter the monster from tagging him out?

3. Yoo Jae-suks's hilarious move to erase Kwang-soo's handiwork (by wetting his fingers in his mouth then rubbing them against Kwang-soo's foot) cracked me up. It was so childish and so instinctively natural for some reason.

4. Suk-jin's unfortunate habit of inadvertently walking into dangerous zones.

5. MCW was okay, I guess. at the beginning, she sort of irked me because she had to be "eased" into the scheme of things, but eventually she wised up; and at the end, she even managed to pull her weight -- when she threw her whole weight to help pin down the monster so they could slip the bracelet into his wrist.

6. Lee Seung-gi's comment about why the games are always difficult (mostly involving water, during cold weather) whenever he turned up as an RM guest.

7. MCW's "chocolate" deal would have bothered me more if she had been the sole "victor". It was a bit funny yes, yet rather underhanded too. It wouldn't have mattered if she did really work hard for it or if she had really been instrumental in winning games (read: not being handled with kid gloves by other competitors).

8. Lastly, the Monster (Kim Ji-hoon) was great!

Overall, this is a great episode to start the year. Here's hoping that this will be trend for the rest of the year.

It is hard to talk sense over this thing with some fans. It is like, people hating on the actor based on the character they played in a drama (in MCW's case, Brilliant Legacy). Sad to say, there are tons of people who are not to being able to tell the differences between real and reel and very sensitive over little things. And what's more, judging a character based on variety show. lol. Can we really tell what the real characters of all the variety show experts (who're really good) are like in real life? no. It's just too naive to think that way.

I'm sure she was cleaning up, or sitting somewhere warm, but it was an accurate observation for someone to ask "where is she?" and preferential treatment of a guest. (I don't know what I decide about whether or not that it's a good or bad thing to treat a guest in this way.)

Perhaps in tomorrow's ep, she'll be better and adapt much, especially since she's on Seung Gi's team, and though he's also a guest, he's a pro in varieties.

Maybe she needed to pee. :D

Next episode: Lee Seung Gi vs Lee Seo Jin + LSG and MCW on the same team + the casts adorable love for Seojinnie but we all know he's the lonely cold type. Quite hot for an ahjusshi!!

I'm amazed how Seung Gi and Seo Jin aka dimple brothers are friends despite the huge contrast in personna and and huge age gap!

Sunday ... come quickly!

Yes, SG is like mini Jae Suk. They are both super nice and funny without over-doing!

I like his bromance with Ho Dong though. If he hosts a show with JS, people will compare them a lot saying he's copying. But it's just that they have the same style and hold the same kind of clean life.

This is just my opinion. for me entertainer must be know how to living up the atmosphere. yjs,kjk and lks are good at this. it doesn't mean that thy should always be funny but the way 3 of them bickering about mcw with kjk try to talk to her is a good way to make her feel closer to them. u know why kjk and yjs have their own talk show as main MC? bcause thy are good at talking to the guests. so thy all know how to welcome the first time guests. since lsg already on the show before so thy focus their attention to mcw. so its not her fault at all to be treated like that. i will say this without bias towards rm or mcw. if you want to say mcw boring so how about sjh in this eps? barely speak not interact with guests and just stand still in intro also in ice eating game. mcw should be with yjs or kjk or lks in team and i thnk she will be more comfortable. so lets not blame guest and make it looks like thy are ruining the show. she admit that she not good but still try her best in rm show and i know members and staffs feel thankful for that.

Agree with you. I do love SJH but I have to admit that she is boring in this eps. But it doesnt mean I dont like her just because of that. We know SJH has done awesome job in the previous eps.

So I think we cant blame the guest when we found something we couldnt agree with. Exp when it was her/his 1st show in RM. They need adaption.

Just enjoy the show and stop bashing. Hahaa! I love RM!

No you're not, I can assure you all Airens (SG's fans) and Moonlights (CW's fans) and Korean viewers ejoyed that scene. It had the peak of forgot how much in viewerships' rating, so yeah the others can say how boring CW was, she brought high ratings to the show.
Haters gotta hate (not talking about you dear)

I found this episode to be fun for the most part. Some of the editing was a bit put-off. The second mission didn't show SJH's team with the ice-steak. Time constraints or not, I was a it po'd about theat. I got the feeling KJK/SJH broke the ice pepero on purpose. Just an observation.

The chase sequence with the "Monster" was different. I liked it. During the 'chocolate' debate thing, I kept yelling at LSG to just grab the damn bracelet back and move! It was too funny how YJS kept on running away when LSG called out to him. It took awhile, but JaeSuk finally caught on.

The last scene with the different topographies pretty much summed up everything. This is going to be a bit damp folks! Look forward to next week.

First, I hate to be editorial, but Gummoichi needs to make another read-through of this piece. I was tripping over missing words and grammatical errors about every third paragraph.

. . . Second, I agree that Moon Chae Won is entirely too prim a personality for this kind of spontaneous show, and I was cringing for her throughout the first half. However, the RM veterans are used to dealing with this issue, and she finally loosened up in time for the chase segment. The debate over the chocolate was classic RM, and I've seen similarly silly debates from the regulars as well as guests.

. . . Third, speaking of prim, ladylike guests, Moon Chae Won seemed generally frightened of that dumpster sliding game. She hung on long enough to be responsible for the first big dump in the first round by kicking JKook loose--our re-capper missed that--then disappeared for the rest of the game. Ji Hyo was cheering from the sidelines by herself.

I read the comments first before watching the show and I have to say moon Chae won is not so bad,and the chocolate part was her trying to be underhanded, so no biggie. I have nothing to complain about and I loved how scared they were of the monster. Especially the way he handled the tiger wish the rest of the cast were there to witness that rare moment.

Moon Chae Won was not so bad. She took some time to break the ice. It's ok since people need time to warm up. What's important is we finally got to see her let her guard down and have fun. I think she was too tired to keep up a ladylike facade at that point, and we got to see a glimpse of the fun.

At least she's not as uptight as Shin Minah was.
SMA was still quite uncomfortable at the end of her episode although she was less awkward as the day go by. Moon still has potential to entertain us in variety as long as she's given time to find her footing. Hope we can see more of her letting her hair down in the next episode.

Shin Min Ah came to mind immediately to me on watching Moon Chae Won walk so tentatively out of that snow globe. Her appearance on 'Strong Heart' is a classic because her painful shyness and natural serious was so evident. Seung Ji, the expert natural host, started off the show sitting with her instead of standing at his podium, just to get her to open up and speak freely.

Last year I broke up with my girlfriend due to many misunderstandings and I remember very well how hard I had been fighting to get her back. She changed her number, changed her job so that I don’t visit her office and none of her friends would give me any information about her. The only thing I could do was to go find help from anywhere, so i looked for a way to get her back then a friend recommended me to contact Prophet.chasus@yahoo.com that he will help me and as my friend said, Prophet.chasus helped me to bring back my girlfriend just in 3 days, I now have her back and this is the biggest joy of my life

Mary hunny, your love for Song Jae Rim is a story of Epic proportion here on DB :)
I think you would probably wear a pink bunny suit and hop backwards through town singing " we"re off to see the wizard" if it might get you closer to him. And you know what.. i bet a lot of beanies would do the same to help you out if we thought it could get you your man. Keep the hope alive !Fighting!!

I don't know why there's so many negative comments about MCW O_o I foudn her cute. She didn't try to be 'sfunny on purpose or try to be make people laugh. She's shy, in her world sometimes and somehow it's cute and funny. Plus LSG said that she was hesitante to come since she feel akward in variety shows. I'm actually happy she gave RM a try!!!

the chocolate scene was awesome hahaha. Can't wait till next week :)

I thought Chae Won was decent-- really cute and enjoyable to watch towards the latter part of the episode, albeit somewhat reserved.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who wanted to see SpartAce actually do the Pepero game! I can't believe their stick actually broke in half. D: (or they made it break in half)

Hi,
Long time reading recaps on dramas and variety shows. You guys (writers/bloggers) are doing a fantastic job. Will you guys still do this going 5 years from now? I wonder.
Regardless, I really enjoy it so keep up the good work. I'm glad Running man has a good start for the year and Seo Jin next ep is very unexpected. The best part of RM is when they always bring a surprise to both audience and the cast themselves. Definitely one of their best eps. A lot of comments in this ep, mostly MCW but to me she is just clueless. Noh Sa Yeon is still the best female guest though. Hahaha. As for JH & JK, it was uncomfortable 4 both bec I always thought they treat each other more like a bro n sis, u can clearly see n their rxns too, also MC is to me is just not the same anymore. It's clear Gary is overdoing some of his rxns now compared to his previous genuine efforts to JH.
Overall I love RM I hope they continue 4 yrs however I have a sunken feeling this will be their last season and will also be their best.
In the meantime thank you gummi for recapping this show. Well never see the likes of this show again.

you can't judge a person's personality just based on some variety shows and some criticisms here are just unnecessary. i actually thought the chocolate part is sooo funny. MCW was fun to watch. I never find RM interesting but this episode is hilarious mainly due to mcw's chocolate part.

The third game is the most entertaining segment in RM in a while. I guess it inspired by RM China with Jong Kook, all vs Jong Kook in ripping name tag game.

Apparently Kim Ji Ho will appear in Roommate as well

MCW was a pleasent sight. Period. I thought her aegyo was pretty cute with that chocolote situation.

However, she didn't really give anything from her. A little bit like princess yes. I was disspointed because some of her co-stars said that she is pretty cool and quite boyish. She seems like that too in the interviews.

We saw a fairy that every korean guy would like to have as a girlfriend. Cute with no personality.

I was a little bit taken off during the games. I have not seen such a passive famale guest on the show in a while. I know, I know - actress, image, blah blah blah. But it is Running Man for God sake!

like what her co-stars had said, she is someone who needs time to get warmed up to new people but once she knows you, she can be very outgoing. So, it is understandable that with her character, we won't see her outgoing side in her variety shows especially as one timer. She is not suitable for variety shows and she knows it. But at least, she gave it a try for at least once.

Ep 228 is epic, the "Monster" game is crazy good, it gives the RM members fear and joy at the same time, it makes them scared and laugh so hard and that make us enjoying the show.
About MCW, i did not expect much from her but her chocolate moment makes me laugh alot. Sometimes, the great guests do not need to b outstanding through out the show but only few remarkable moments and we'll b always remember those. Just like Wang Ji Hye with Kwang Soo's ofcoz game OR Han Hyo Joo with HaHa. MCW's chocolate bargain will b a moment that we would never forget, her slow and simple thinking is kind of cute.

Too bad for MCW, when she's about to get used to variety thing, we cant see more of her moments as Ep.229 is an epic disaster in RM history.
