Running Man: Episode 229

Aww, let’s all give the resident grump a hug. Never has someone being so ill-humored and crabby been so entertaining to watch than with Lee Seo-jin. His droll delivery and no nonsense at all the ridiculous facets of this show adds an extra charm that makes me snort in response and giggle for the entire episode.

What’s better is that all the cast wants to do is love him and play with the peevish mat hyung. Accept the bromance invitation, Seojinnie!

EPISODE 229. Broadcast on January 11, 2015.

It’s a blustery cold morning as Day 2 breaks in Incheon. Prior to the opening, Seung-gi meets with Taek PD alone to receive his own secret mission: eliminate Chae-won and the Running Man cast members undetected. “This smells of betrayal,” Seung-gi breathes.

He’s at a clear disadvantage since the cast members know every in and out of nametag ripping in their four and a half year experience—thus, his special guest will be helping him out today. Enter Lee Seo-jin affectionately known as Seojinnie, whose first words are, “Why are there so many cameras in here?” and then “I really didn’t want to come.”

Not thrilled about having to physically exert himself, Seo-jin shifts all the responsibility to Seung-gi: “…you run,” “…you rip off their nametags.” He’s already aware that Jong-kook isn’t easy to take down, adding, “Just tear my nametag off first.”

They’re given a heads-up about the opening mission that will keep the other eight occupied; should they complete this nametag mission, they’ll acquire a special bonus. Catch is, they must both be present for any eliminations to count. Seung-gi to Seo-jin: “Hyung, I think you’ll have to do some running.” Seo-jin: “Are you out to make me hurl?”

They’ll have to be extra careful since any bit of suspicion will count against them. Seung-gi wonders if he should pull the members aside in a room to get the job done, and Seo-jin says that’s where he’ll be waiting. Hahaha.

The official opening takes place half an hour later, and while the atmosphere is warm and lively despite the cold, we see Seo-jin (who’d been all grumpy about this mission) keeping close watch in the lobby.

Seung-gi tries to keep his reactions in check as the others receive their opening mission to find the hidden cards and use them to figure out a puzzle. It sounds pretty mathy, and when Chae-won inadvertently knocks knees with Jae-suk in an effort to copy his comic “Let’s go!” pose, the guys congregate around her to check if she’s okay.

It appears the others have already read the news about Seo-jin’s guest appearance today, much to Seung-gi’s surprise. His voice falters as he searches for a good explanation, and Taek PD swoops in to answer that Seo-jin will be joining them later since he’ll be coming straight from the airport.

Seung-gi plays dumb at the half-truth (apparently Seo-jin was traveling overseas; he just came in earlier than the others think), and those words are legit enough for the others.

With that, they head out, and Seung-gi hangs back to text Seo-jin that he’ll be bringing in people soon. The response? “I got it, so let’s finish this up quickly so we can go and eat.” Ha.

Ji-hyo finds a number card right away and so do a few others. Seung-gi is in total panic mode and he’ll have to hurry if he even has a chance of completing this mission. Of course, Seo-jin has no idea as he yawns in boredom-jet-lag.

As soon as Jong-kook disappears, Seung-gi draws attention to Seo-jin’s presence to Kwang-soo. Our giraffe steps inside to say hello, which is when Seung-gi rips off his nametag. It doesn’t even register to Kwang-soo that he’s been eliminated at first, as he’s told to take a seat.

It’s only when Seo-jin matter-of-factly tells him that he’s here to yunno, oust everyone in a nametag mission does Kwang-soo realize that Seo-jin and Seung-gi are in cahoots with each other. Kwang-soo points out that their separate mission is meaningless then, to which Seo-jin says he couldn’t care less about that.

Chae-won fortuitously walks into the same room a little later. She’s startled to see her actor sunbae casually sitting there, and has a belated response to her nametag getting torn off. When Kwang-soo teases her for being super dense just now, she returns, “…what about you, Oppa?” Ha, true—she certainly has a point there.

Seo-jin is encouraged to move to a different location, since it’s only a matter of time until the others catch on and suspect. Chae-won worries that Seo-jin won’t get any airtime at this rate, but that’s honestly the least of his worries: “I don’t want to be on air. I have no selfish desire [for airtime] on this show.” Pfft, how is everything that comes out of his mouth so hilariously grumpy?

Chae-won: “We have to promote our movie, go on.” Seo-jin: “I’m a special guest! Why would I promote anything?”

Interestingly, Chae-won makes sure both Seung-gi and Se-jin have left before talking to Kwang-soo in hushed whispers. What’s more curious is that Suk-jin points out how flustered Seung-gi looked earlier, and looks up to see Kwang-soo and Chae-won signal that they’re both eliminated. Oooh, there’s another secret mission, isn’t there?

Two hours earlier. The Running Man cast and Chae-won are told of Seung-gi and Seo-jin’s spy mission, which elicit a laugh out of the all-too experienced Jong-kook: “How embarrassing.” Their mission is to be eliminated without arousing suspicion, and in practice, it also takes a few awkward seconds for Chae-won to realize that she’s already been eliminated.

Ha, so that explains why Kwang-soo had to stifle his laughter, remembering how her reaction was a beat too late then too. It actually makes this mission a lot more amusing as Jong-kook points out Seung-gi’s odd behavior.

Our experienced cast has already caught on to the idea that the “spies” are pulling them aside one by one, so they decide to humor their guests. Jae-suk heads up as the sacrificial lamb, playing his part to a T in front of Seo-jin.

I love how Jae-suk calls Seo-jin “Three Meals Hyung” (a reference to the just-completed cooking variety show Three Meals A Day) and again, Seo-jin says matter-of-factly that he’s just doing as he’s told.

Haha’s surprised reaction is spot-on, as well as Ji-hyo’s. She remarks on how Seo-jin gives off airs like a man born of privilege—someone who doesn’t like getting sweaty or the cold. He wouldn’t be the least bit sorry if someone else is freezing next to him, rather boasting about the many layers he’d wear to keep warm.

Now only Gary and Jong-kook remain, and the two barely get to work out a strategy before they’re approached by Seung-gi and Seo-jin. Gary makes a deliberate show of stepping aside, and Seung-gi’s doesn’t pick up on why.

So while our spies think that they’re being covert, our cast finds their behavior just plain funny. Seung-gi’s practically giggling with “victory” so close at hand and Gary runs around for him before pretending to be scared to greet Seo-jin.

Seo-jin goes ahead to rip off Gary’s nametag, saying that they can go and eat now. “So you eliminated me like this because you wanted to eat?” Gary asks.

Seung-gi is totally pleased with himself, thinking that he was an admirable spy. Gary lets him believe it, and it’s only when the eight are declared the winners does Seung-gi believe the truth. “I knew it was too easy!”

Seo-jin’s face is neither excited nor disappointed, just, So what? Then it’s time to announce teams, and Seo-jin looks super uncomfortable despite Jae-suk’s insistence that they’re friendly. The Today’s Love costars are paired together, and then Seo-jin gripes over the overacting between Kwang-soo and Jong-kook.

Haha isn’t all that excited to be teamed up with Suk-jin, and lastly the Monday Couple are paired off together.

All of our couples are given small pouches to wear for today’s Couple Race. Seo-jin looks even more hilarious when he wears his off-the-shoulder instead of like a crossbody, but he’s most uncomfortable about Jae-suk’s constant efforts to look chummy together.

There are 15 pairs of different number and operation cards randomly divided among our five couples. The team that gets rid of all their cards the fastest at the final mission station will be declared today’s victors. In order to that, the top three teams from each games may trade cards with other teams to create pairs which in turn will cancel the other out.

Everyone heads out and the Haha-Suk-jin couple stop Jae-suk and Seo-jin to share a name acrostic: “Hey there. Seojinnie. We really love you!” Seo-jin just tells Jae-suk to drive away, and Haha remarks that Seo-jin really didn’t enjoy it.

In his car, Jae-suk offers to return the favor to Haha, an idea Seo-jin flatly turns down. But they end up pulling up to Haha and Suk-jin’s car and Jae-suk starts, “Hahaha,” then nudges Seo-jin. He ends up yelling, “Don’t do that!” (the phrase “Hajimah“). Heh, a perfect fit.

Once they all gather at the ocean shore, our teams are informed of their first game: My Love Piggyback Ride. Here, one person will crawl under a net, jump to grab a sandal in a pouch and climb onto their teammate’s back. From there they’ll be carried and must successfully kick the shoe into a basket.

The first place team that completes this mission needn’t participate any further (in this game). Jae-suk tries that line to appease Seo-jin, who then whispers at him to go be their runner. Hahaha, he really doesn’t want to work up a sweat if he can help it.

I do realize that a viewer who’s not familiar with Seo-jin’s grumpiness that Korea now knows him for (from Grandpa Over Flowers) could possibly find him off-putting. Despite his outwardly crankiness, he’s already shown that he works hard once he decides to do so. He doesn’t, however, seem to enjoy the acrostic of his name any better when Jae-suk repeats it.

Haha crawls through the net first—when he plucks off another team’s pouch, he cleverly tosses it far away. He tries again, but his short stature works against him. Seung-gi and Chae-won are the first ones to kick their sandal… that lands inches in front of them.

All the couples try to kick their sandals in, and Ji-hyo gets pretty close… until Seo-jin interferes and kicks it out. That’s a pretty accurate interference attempt—look who wants to win now. But Jong-kook and Kwang-soo are the first ones to succeed.

Chae-won and Suk-jin cheer their teammates on (“I’ll treat you to a meal!” “I’ll buy you a house!”) which spurs Jae-suk to ask for some encouraging words. “Do a good job, do a good job,” Seo-jin returns.

Since Haha is too short to reach his pouch, he tosses a shoe at it. That’s smart, and the others copy that same method. And as expected, Seung-gi lives up to his heodang status by overshooting his first shoe, then the second wraps the pouch around the pole even further. LOL, what luck.

The Monday Couple nearly gets their sandal into the basket. They try again and snag second place. Jae-suk has to remind Seo-jin of their promises to switch places for this upcoming round, and when Seo-jin threatens to leave, Kwang-soo envelops him in a backhug. Aww.

Jae-suk has had enough of Seo-jin’s prickly personality, finally letting his pent-up rage burst: “Who’s the one that casted him?!” All arrows point to Seung-gi, who’s flanked on both sides by men in their forties.

Jae-suk momentarily slips up by calling Seung-gi as Seung-jin (a combo of Seung-gi and Seo-jin), blaming the mix-up on his frustrations at Seo-jin. Seo-jin get called out for not looking like he’s ready to run, and then when the whistle blows, he moves at a pace of a brisk walk.

It’s great how the captions would like to point out that this is the first time Seo-jin is crawling under a net on a variety show. He knocks down the pouch, and Jae-suk promises to get it on the first tray. He doesn’t, and Seo-jin immediately drops him.

In the time Jae-suk outs Seo-jin for his peeved state, the young’uns score third place. First place gets to switch two cards while second and third places can exchange one. While the teams are busy going back and forth about their stash, Seo-jin tells them to just get it over with already.

Jong-kook and Kwang-soo are overtly pleased to end up with a pair that third place Chae-won gives them. So the Monday Couple attempt to break up that pair, only to fail in doing so.

Kwang-soo inadvertently ends up giving up a card that helps out Jae-suk and Seo-jin, but unlike the tight hug between the Tiger and Giraffe, Seo-jin just pushes his teammate away, uncomfortable by the proximity. Another switch still has Seo-jin and Jae-suk end up with one pair anyway.

In the car, Jae-suk says that Seo-jin’s poker face confused everyone else. But Seo-jin isn’t all that interested in winning today (or so he says), wondering what all the fuss is about in exchanging some cards.

Kwang-soo deduces that the other team must have another 7, judging from their expressions from when they both received and lost that card. Kwang-soo passes by Haha’s car, saying that he doesn’t see Suk-jin. Eep, they didn’t leave him behind, did they? HA, nope—he’s just snoring peacefully in the car.

So it appears that Seo-jin and Ji-hyo are former costars from the historical drama Gyebaek. When she gets teased for something she allegedly said back then, Ji-hyo threatens to out his secrets. Unperturbed, Seo-jin counters, “Who do you think will have more secrets—you or me?”

Jae-suk takes it upon himself to invite Seo-jin’s niece to watch them film. Aw, she’s a fan of Kwang-soo’s. Seo-jin finally cracks a smile in front of his niece.

This second game is entitled Lovey Dovey Backhug, where they’ll have 60 seconds to move five of a selected object while handling large poles in a backhug position. Jae-suk and Seo-jin are up first with plastic shower seats, and it almost looks like Seo-jin is enjoying himself.

But when the seats keep slipping out of his grasp, Seo-jin resorts to pushing the seats under the table. They manage to get one before time is up. Haha and Suk-jin are worse off with having to deal with lipsticks, but at least Suk-jin keeps a smile on his face despite his growing annoyance. Caption: My name is Big Nose. I’m a man who doesn’t know what it means to give up.

And that when the tide starts to turn because Suk-jin gets a good grip on the lipsticks as the others cheer him on. Although he gets all five on the table, he’s way over the time-limit. Seung-gi is chosen to take the lead after some back and forth, though the others doubt that he’ll do a good job.

To their surprise, he picks it up, his face totally focused. At the last moment, Chae-won feigns a fainting spell to try and be funny; I feel like intentional humor just doesn’t land the same way unexpected variety moments do, and she’s fortunate(?) enough to fall back onto the ground moments later.

Switching places doesn’t help, and when none of the other couples succeed, it’s back to Jae-suk and Seo-jin. They pick another relatively easy item (pots) and the others are quick to point out the competitive and focused look in Seo-jin’s eyes.

Seo-jin kicks Kwang-soo away when the latter attempts to interfere. And despite Kwang-soo’s efforts, Seo-jin and Jae-suk succeed. Seung-gi and Chae-won grab second place, and Kwang-soo tries to put a positive spin on their item: lipstick.

Suk-jin offers some advice from the sidelines—not that they need it because the pair succeed in moving all five mere seconds before time is up. Suk-jin stays positive, though, telling the viewers that today’s just not his day and they can tune in next week.

Jong-kook is displeased with the card he and Kwang-soo acquire from Seung-gi and Chae-won. The latter two end up with a pair after their switch, and the others catch a nervous-looking Seo-jin trying to sneak a peek. Jae-suk, however, is pleased by the Bo-chun Hyung (an abbreviation of “Dimples Angel,”) and does a good job preserving his delight at getting another pair.

Taek PD announces that two couples have a matching pair and that one couple has two pairs. In their respective cars, Jong-kook and Kwang-soo believe that they’re tied with Seung-gi and Chae-won, and the Monday Couple guess that the team that’s gotten the most chance at switching cards — Jae-suk and Seo-jin — are currently the ones in first place.

Jae-suk and Seo-jin take a trip down memory lane by listening to ’90s club hits. Seo-jin says their generation refer to the nightclubs in their day as “night” with their rock and blues music while the young’uns go to “clubs” with their electro dance music.

Our teams arrive at their final mission location, where they’re told to hand over their matching cards and yell “Clear!” Jong-kook asks if they have to, and Kwang-soo requests a nice CG effect to accompany it.

Jae-suk makes Seo-jin redo the action when the latter tosses his cards in. Kwang-soo and Jong-kook get the CGI smoke effect they’re looking for and wonder where their cards have gone.

Here, our teams will be ripping off the numbers or signs of operation they need to create a match, exchanging it for another card. Those matches will only be acknowledged if they place both cards and announce the particular card “cleared.” Again, the team that clears all their cards the fastest, wins.

Seung-gi and Chae-won circle around the Monday Couple, who try to keep their own numbers hidden. It turns out the Monday Couple is a primary target for Jong-kook as well, and when Ji-hyo asks if she has something Chae-won wants, Chae-won cries that she didn’t even get to see yet.

Seung-gi tries to sneak up on Gary and Ji-hyo, only to find himself targeted by Jong-kook. Spartakooks grabs the number he needs. Elsewhere, Jae-suk finds himself trying to fight off Suk-jin and Haha alone (because Seo-jin is sitting around somewhere else).

Haha rips off the 5 off Jae-suk’s back to get the first match, leaving Jae-suk with a division sign. Seo-jin lets out a dry laugh when he hears that he must enter the arena now. He saunters down the room, stopping to comment when Jong-kook runs down the escalator to catch someone: “He’ll win, I guess.”

He peeks around the corner to see Chae-won lying on her back (to protect her numbers) and somehow sits back down to remark how the kids are running around for nothing. Ha.

After Jae-suk fails in grabbing the 4 on Chae-won’s back, they’re joined by a few others who realize that the 4 is the last card Jae-suk needs. She manages to get away. Not too far off, Seo-jin is targeted by Haha and Seung-gi—his attempt to pull rank is futile in this 2:1 attack and gets his 4 card taken away by Haha.

Now Seung-gi has reason to go after Haha and tries to employ Seo-jin’s help. Seo-jin walks away, all, You guys figure it out.

He and Jae-suk approach Jong-kook and Kwang-soo and break up into 1:1 battles. The others use this distraction as an opportunity to attack one another, and then Jae-suk grabs the division sign he and Seo-jin need for the win.

Once everyone gathers together again, Jong-kook points out that Seo-jin didn’t join in with his teammate to dramatically “clear” their last card. Seo-jin isn’t interested in sticking around for the closing, but gets dragged back to do it.

He raises his arm without making the sound effect, and then says a dull “clear,” to Jae-suk’s disappointment. He gets wrangled to at least do the booming aftereffect, and then takes his gold ring prize. In fact, he swipes Jae-suk’s portion, pocketing one and giving the other to Chae-won.

The others tell Seung-gi that he can come collect his goal next time, to which Seung-gi jokes: “Give me my backlog of gold.” After he and Chae-won offer some final words, Seo-jin says he didn’t like this show already, but now “I hate it even more.” I’d say those dimples of yours appear betray those words, good sir.

Definitely an unique character. Who is this grumpy on Running Man? Lols, I found him so endearing despite his grumpiness.

Audiences do see things differently. I thought MCW lost her balance when she didn't move her feet and tried to fall backwards without disturbing SG and his chopsticks. Near the end of the fall there was an attempt at body gag since she was able to slowly extricate herself from the chopsticks - she probably amused herself that she was actually able to fall safely in such an awkward position. Lols.

I think it wasn't on purpose, she lost her balance. And it happens to me lot, when I fall like an idiot, I just start laughing non-stop and lose control of my body causing me more falls.

I had a look at it again. She was squatting when she tried to turn together with the chopsticks. However because she stretched out her left leg to accomodate the turning, she lost her balance. It looks like a legit fall and she tried to laugh it off because of embarassment.

The second time she fell, she was trying to go below the chopsticks when it was turning. Of course she couldn't make it, so she fell.

Not sure if this is the reason why they are close, but both were "baggage boys" the "Over Flowers.." series. Seo Jin in "Grandpas Over Flowers" and Seung Gi in "Noonas Over Flowers". Both hysterical.

Don't know if they knew each other before that, but my guess is that they didn't and formed a camaraderie from the experience.

Seojin had a xmas party in his house together with hook management.seunggi was tagged along by hook staffs and he met seojin there.they got incredibly close since then.they were already friends for years when seojin did 1n2d.

I actually found Lee Seo Jin to be annoying, his grumpy act just got boring and I was hoping he would at least try a little, this episode although not as good as last weeks is still a solid RM episode, I'm loving Ji Suk Jin and Gary more and more and I wish they would be swapped around in the groups more often, it's always either Gary/Ji-hyo Ji Suk Jin/Ji-hyo or Gary/Ji Suk Jin, neither of them gets to partner up with guests or other members very often and I think after 5 years some new teams would be fun Kim Jong Kook/Suk Jin and Haha /Ji-hyo is something I really want to see and perhaps less guests, its been forever since we've had en episode with just the cast

Maybe the PDs should have paired Lee Seojin with Song JiHyo. They seem really comfortable with each other. He seems to be more chatty with the opposite sex, just like with the other lady co-stars in his drama Wonderful Days.

Agree. Even though SJH is normally quiet around guests but since he's her co-stars before they can actually be paired up and maybe we'll get to hear all the funny stuffs that happened during their filming together. He will get screen time no matter who he's with, not really need to stick to YJS all the time.

I agree mostly. His act works on his own show, but when he goes to someone elses show it just comes across as too much.

There are cast members that they almost never assign to guests if it's just two of them. That's SJH, Gary and JSJ. Well, at least that's what I think. SJH and Gary because the guest won't get enough screen time, whereas for impala it's because he's just not popular with the guests. That's why it's always SJH + Gary / SJH + JSJ. The production team can't help it. I agree that I would like to see "newer" teams. I use to be a fan of the Hahyo couple and it'll be interesting to see if this can still work out. It is a possibility because of the Monday Couple's scandal. They'll probably want to distract the viewers from that so we won't get to see them in a team much.

Right now the order of screentime in Running Man its like that.

Yoo Jae Suk
Lee Kwang Soo
Kim Jong Kook
Haha
Ji Suk Jin
Gary
Song Ji Hyo

Put the guest with the people who have more screentime.

I agree YJS, KJK and LKS has a lot of screen times, and at times Haha too, but I think they usually pair guests with KJK, YJS and Haha because these three can help guide and lead the guests and make them feel more comfortable on the show. I remember someone said the same thing abt this here many moons ago.

0

Who doesn't love girrafe. You know I previously (before RM, I used to watch 1N2D) took betrayals seriously, it was untill a special ep of 1N2D, Ho Dong betrayed Su Geun but in the letter he apologized, then Seung Gi wrote in his letter that those persons aren't caring about their images and only care to make the show better.
When I started watching RM, Kwang Soo definetly stands among the other with Jae Suk. The previous is way too sweet and funny you can't not love him, while Kwang Soo is funny and treats guests like the cast.

I love this guy. He's like the human Grumpy Cat. So entertaining to watch. Peevish, grumpy, reluctant, complaining. Love it.

I watched this episode and I fount Lee Seo Jin to be extremely annoying. I don't know who he is or if he is famous for being grumpy. But I didn't like the episode. I felt he was being rude and kept thinking to myself that he couldn't say no to the show.

Anyway, am I missing something? are Korean entertainments who are grumpy considered funny? Is he know for being grumpy? am I missing something here?

As much as I wanted to like it, I couldn't. It was very cringe worthy watching the rest of the cast trying to adapt to him. I wish he could've at least try a bit. It would've been awesome if in the end he would really throw himself to the silliness of clearing the mission.

If you don't watch many other variety shows, it's no surprise you haven't heard of him, though he is a talented actor as well. Basically, he's become pretty popular within the last few years, in large part, due to PD Na who cast him on Grandpa's Over Flowers and Three Meals a Day (you can actually find recaps right here on this site; both were rating/variety show hits).

At this point, he's pretty much just banking on his variety-show persona (being grumpy/uninterested/whiny), just like how all the Running Men have their own silly gimmicks and characteristics which make them popular with fans. The producers and the cast would've known what to expect when they invited him on the show, which is why the cast was going out of their way to annoy and mess with him - they knew they could do so without getting him upset. And it looked to me like they were having a blast! I thought the whole thing was very meta and fun.

Besides, if he was truly that uninterested, he wouldn't have bothered to guest star, let alone bring his sister and niece along with him to the set.

I think it is such a shame that some international fans find it annoying/rude because they haven't watched him in Grandpa Over Flowers. Of course, it is likely not to like him if you haven't known him before. You have that human Grumpy cat complaining all day long and people don't get it, it is fine really but saying that the cast members had to adapt to him/cut him some slack whereas it was obvious they all enjoyed their company. I mean, did you see how much Gary was cracking' up everytime Seo Jin was opening his mouth ? I am not Korean but it is no wrong to say that he is known for his grumpy personality in Korea. Seeing the ratings of his latest variety show, people adore him for it.
Plus, isn't it cute to have him complaing how he doesn't like the show whereas you can tell he enjoyed it so much ? He kept telling he isn't interested in the game but at the end, he did work hard for them to win. So yeah', I sure hope he is going to guest again. He is AMAZING. He is the kind of guest where one episode isn't freakin' enough. You need to have more and more of him.
I gotta add that more than his personality, I like how he blends well with ALL the members. He interacted and reacted to them. My favorite ? "Big Nose is bullshit/my butt". SO FREAKIN' FUNNY XD.

"At the last moment, Chae-won feigns a fainting spell to try and be funny; I feel like intentional humor just doesn’t land the same way unexpected variety moments do"
Gosh', I thought I was the only one who felt awkward when she did it. Like, it was obvious that it was intentional so I wasn't really entertained but more like "Okaay ..." "Why did she do that ?". I get that she is trying to be hilarious and +1 for trying but yeah', it was just plain awkward.
I said on the previous week's episode that she was more entertaining than I was but in this episode, she was less entertaining that I expected her to be lol. Like, she seems to want to do well in variety and so, she works hard on it but yeah'. Whatever, not all people are fitting for varietyland and it is just cool that she is trying to fit in. She ain't going to be one of those guests who I would want back on Running Man though.

Overall, I loooooved that episode. The first game reminded me of True Gary Show, episode 60 (which btw needs to have an explanation for the ending although I am pretty sure Gary knew that the members played a trick on him so he played a trick on them again too TRICKCEPTION ? LMAO. No but yeah', it is the only answer making scene because, why would the PD let him do that then ? The editing was just focusing so much on the way he walked so yeap').
The other games were funny but I gotta say that they are funnier with the cast and guest's interactions. And dayum, how I wished the last game was longer. It was so fun and I wanted more Human Grumpy Cat sweating bullets trying to defend his number/sign and still claiming that no, he is not into the game at all lol.

I agree with everything you said about seojinnie, those that don't like him just don't know him from previous works and reputation. About moon Chae won, I don't think she was faking a fainting spell,if you look again she was squatting while turning the chop sticks and it's like she forgot to move her legs, so her upper body moved and not the lower,so she toppled over, the second time, tired legs from holding the position too long.I actually think she was better than last week coz she was at ease.

But with Lee Seo Jin, I was talking about his variety skills and image with the example of one of his shows, Grandpa Over Flowers whereas with Moon Chae Won, at the very beginning of episode 228, she mentionned herself that she hasn't done a variety show before and reading the comments of last week, it confirmed her statement so why are you telling me about the BTS of her dramas ? It is completely irrelevant to my comment.

Well, the same goes for Lee Seo-jin. Clearly, people who never watched GoF may not be able to appreciate this, and he in GoF is also completely unrelated to RM as well. Yeah, so what if GoF is a variety show? If you haven't watched it it doesn't give you anything on who LSJ is.

I agree that Moon Chae-won's umm body gag was unnecessary and awkward to watch, so I just skipped that part altogether. But it was extremely awkward too when LSJ deliberately strolled during the games. It looked too international for me, so I skipped that too.

But Chaewon was NOT even faking her fall. She really did fall for real because she loses her balance. She was that clumsy. And you we're criticizing her for it saying 'Why did she do that', 'she's one of guess I would not want to return' etc. when she wasn't even trying to funny at all. You judge her without even know her or her personality. And you immediately presume she was just doing it for gag. And yet you criticized the international fans who find LSJ annoying because they do not know him. Well you just did the same! Ifans do not know that LSJ has a grumpy personality and so they find him annoying just like you did not know that Chaewon has clumsy personality and do not know how to fake things at all since she was not into variety and so you judge her that she was trying hard to be funny and that she was awkward when that really is just her personality.

You're whole post is just so ironic and hypocritical and that was what the other poster is telling you in their reply. Just like how you did not like MCW in variety and you think she wasn't meant for it the it was also the same for all international fans who did not find LSJ funny at all. And do not think he was good for variety.

The PD is definitely going back to the vault with the 2 vs 8 mission. Now I'd like the return of running balls and find the guest and I've always hated gold, bring back hot pants punishment. And can they stop with the numbers? I'm always afraid it'll be another math mission when I see numbers.

Totally agree, the casts and the guests are all loaded they don't need gold. Avoiding humiliation is a great motivation. Plus, I think it would be interesting to see strategies where the goal is not necessarily to win, but to avoid being last/bottom 3 or whatever the punishment number is. Instead of automatically ganging up on KJK, some will be driven to ally with him leading to more opportunities for scheming, betrayals, and all sorts of other hijinks.

Plus this guy didn't have to come to the show, running man was lucky to have him guest and he did it for his junior. U have to know doing things like crawling on his back or somethings they do on running man are really beneath him,but he still did it.that's how he always is complaining but doing a great job on everything Ive seen him in. everyone knows he acts like a spoiled rich kid, that's his persona.so don't complain too much just take him as he is and be sure to avoid him in future coz I'm guessing the older he gets, the grumpier he'll become.

Why is RM lucky to have him? Nobody is that special. He's lucky he's able to go on a show and promote his movie. He did it for himself as much as for LSG. He's in the movie too and it's his career even if he's pretending he doesn't care.

That's just his act. He's there for a reason, to promote his movie, not out of the goodness of his heart to grace the RM cast with his presence. I like the guy, but come on. Every guest makes the news. That's how RM works. He's also famous nowadays of variety, not acting. I'm not sure people consider him an A list actor anymore or ever really. He's not a movie actor.

He only had a cameo, so he didn't need to go at all. He wasn't there because he wanted to promote. Obviously no guest star will go all out to promote his movie. No matter how well it does in the box office it doesn't affect him one bit. As for whether he's A list, that's probably open for debate.

I think Lee Seo Jin doesn't fit in a variety show like RM (pure games). But his antics are funny, maybe he is better in show like 1N2D were the stakes for each game are high (lunch & dinner). And we all saw him suffer in Three Meals a Day lol

Lee Seo-jin was a guest at 1N2D. I can't remember which episode it was but he came on the show as Seung-gi's friend. That's where he got his nickname "Art School hyung" from, because Lee Su-geun thought the way he carried himself seemed like someone who went to art school. I think it's also the first time Na PD laid eyes on Seo-jin and noticed his natural variety talent, leading to his casting on the Grandpa Over Flowers series and of course, the beginning of their oh-so-entertaining bromance.

This is just my opinion but I feel like Seo Jin's attitude works because hes the total opposite of everyone else on the show. Everyone else is all pumped up and ready to run around and win, but no matter what he's like Nope, not gonna happen bro. Haha its like the total buzzkill moment that just kills me. The craziness of the challenges works because everyone goes with it but if you really look at it the stunts are silly and childish. Instead of going okay yeah lets do this! He calls it out for being silly. Maybe because I have a similar attitude but I thought he was hilarious. Yes maybe he is being grumpy but he still does it. So I think that should count for something. They can't force him to be on the show or do the challenges. If he didn't really want to he wouldn't.

I agree with all you've said. I found Seo-jin to be hilarious on this Running Man episode. He has this no-nonsense attitude that is just the total opposite of the other permanent cast members, who tend to just go along with the production's scenario, no matter how ridiculous. Seo-jin was a breath of fresh air here. Of course, his attitude wouldn't work at all if he were to become a permanent member, but as a one-off guest he's perfect. I don't know if he would ever come on Running Man again but I certainly hope so. One episode is just not enough. I want more of his brand of hilarity.

I had never seen Seo Jin before this ep, and I thought he was pretty hilarious.

There's a huge difference between a grump who irritates people and a grump who entertains people. The thing is, he does actually play along, even when he's muttering the whole time. And his grumpiness is very inward-focused, which means he's not projecting his grumpiness onto others and making them uncomfortable.

If he was a pain in the neck, then people wouldn't want to be around him and wouldn't invite him on shows like this. But clearly they do like him, because he's a cute curmudgeon rather than a whiny brat.

What Miranda said. You could see that the other RM members were enjoying his presence and snark (like someone raised Gary as an example, and it was obvious Jihyo and him crossed swords as well) so as much as I agree that he may not really be suited for game-intensive shows like RM, he's not being rude or standoffish. Or else, he wouldn't have bonded with Jaesuk during the car ride before the last mission.

Exactly - it all hinges on the fact that he's quiet until someone asks him something. If you're stuck with someone who's constantly saying "I hate this!" Or "I want to sit down!" Or "When do we eat?" then you get irritated. But Seo Jin just quietly shuffles along in the background until he's specifically asked something, at which point he gives a hilariously grumpy (but relevant!) answer.

That's why he's fun, because they know what's coming and they are literally asking for it. But he also doesn't get angry with them or really express his grumpiness in any way other than his words - even his tone is mild when he's saying he hates something. So it's easy to find teasing him fun.

Honestly, he made me laugh a lot - it helps that he has those huge dimples, so even when he's being a stick in the mud he looks kind of happy about it.

I <3 Lee Seo jin since Grandpa over Flowers and Three meals a day. Heck, I loved watching him the first time he guested at 1N2D too. But He was really uncomfortable to watch in RM.

In RM, I don't know if it was a poor editing, his choice to deliberately push his gruff character to the extremes or mix of everything, but the reason I found his complaining character likable is because in Na PD shows, he tries really hard despite the fact that he complains 24/7 so it makes it funny. I am really puzzled why this guy went to a show called RUNNING MAN and decided not to run. It's not like he isnt used to hardcore variety, he's totally active and engaging in all the activities during 1n2d. That's what made Na PD see LSJ's potential in the first place. So I was puzzled at his lack of will to try.

But we don't know what goes on behind the camera 24/7. It's possible that the editing to package his character only emphasized his annoying demeanor and nothing really more as a deliberate move on SBS's part was to mudsling his characters since in tvN's varities he is the center. But that might be too much extrapolation - I watched too much Pinocchio. But, I do think in general he didn't really try in RM compared to other shows.

But regardless, what I saw on the camera for RM, if that was the first and only time I saw him, I would have been greatly displeased to maybe not want to watch anything he centers in. It was disappointing to see as a fan. I hope he sticks to Na PD works only from now on or learn to balance his character from this disastrous experience.

wow a lot of butthurt RM fans over here. This episode's ratings were pretty high for an "annoying" guest.

Get on with the program. Each member has his/her own "character" and Seojin played up the grumpy/uninterested character. Do you people actually hate KwangSoo for his betrayals? Or JongKook for always using his strength? or HaHa for being loud like a kid?

The RM cast were clearly enjoying it, and so did the Korean audience. In fact Lee Seojin was trending on the portal sites after the episode aired.

You people take Seojin's comments very seriously. Are you for real? Have you ever watched variety shows before? If you can suspend your disbelief that the couples in We Got Married aren't actually married and/or in a relationship and are doing it for the show, why then do you think Seojin was annoying and rude?

Its not annoying feeling that i had for lee seo jin. he funny and everybody seem enjoying it but if he cant doing even small thngs i thnk thts why some people here found he is annoying. yjs need to keep asking him to do the clear together and that rule in the game. he is a guest and rm not a talk show that you can just depending on talking, it also involve action and running. maybe thats why some people found he annoying when he dont really want to participate. for me i also found its funny to see yjs try hard to comfort him and even explode like a drunken man but in the last game that he just let yjs to clear alone eventhough its rule make he look like he really dont want to make an effort for rm. so when mcw participate really well and there some people roll their eyes to watch her that what makes me dont really understand. people said dont take it seriously but when it come to mcw, thy roll their eyes just bcause of her slow moving slapstick? i bet thy must be woman who have ill feeling for women so pretty and adorable like her that everythng she does makes them feel sick

i find LSJ is annoying and i don't really into a grumpy joke. not really. i prefer a guest who wanna play and run as RM concept than a guest who don't wanna do anything, just sitting. hell no... but luckily, the games are such entertain to watch and keep me watching it until the end.

Because that's his persona. It's just like how each of the RM has their own personality that you can associate with. RM invited Lee Seo Jin knowing that he will act like that and they probably scripted the humor based on that. If you noticed, at the very beginning, before Lee Seo Jin even interacted with any members, they kept mentioning his grumpiness and such. RM is a show, expect a big portion of it to be scripted.

I'm surprised many found Seo-jin annoying because he had me in stitches. Definitely stole the episode with his antics, even if some didn't like it. For me, there's something really amusing about someone who's so fully ready to admit he'd rather not be there. I found it adorable when he kept insisting he's most definitely not having fun and yet he clearly enjoyed a bit of it in the end.

Also, I realized I'd rather see boring and dull MCW over her trying to be 'funny' and completely failing to bring out any emotions in me other than irritation. She's the one that made me roll my eyes. What was that purposely falling on the floor done for? Comedy? Because it sure as heck wasn't funny.

This episode was much better than the last. Heodang Seung-gi's return had me rofling. He's so naive, I can't believe he fell for everyone's obvious ploy in the first game. Missed him in variety!

"What was that purposely falling on the floor done for? Comedy?"

If You were talking about the game she was kneeling and couldn't not move when lsg starts to move and that's make her fall..If she done it for comedy,is there a problem? Is not running man casts do all the crazy things for comedy and heck a lot of times it's not even funny. That's what we called of being biased. When someone we like being called grumpy, we excused it as that's how s/he is and that's funny. if someone we dislike, then, s/he being called boring or has an attitude. If the members treated the guest we dislike well, we said s/he has princess/prince attitudes. but for someone we like, then, everything is all good since we the members did it happily and no one force them. :)

In my opinion MCW was better than previous episode because she tried to do better but I didn't find her funny or so,her act was too childish,it's clear she tried to get more screen time and overreact in many cases like screaming, lying on the ground and so,but she wasn't annoying.and about LSj he was funny for once, but it can't do for another time,I love it how jae suk used different way of speaking to make him into games, try to be close, overreact when he knew LSJ hate it,his drunk show to say he's angry with LSJ,using niece to make him wok harder and so on..and about LSJ maybe he didn't see RM games suitable for his age or his dignity but he liked games,U can see many time he's smiling and concentrate for games or sad when he lost, but when others mentioned him he stoped himself,it's funny how he doesn't have confident about winning against KJK,maybe that's another reason he didn't want to be into game.grouping him with funny & talkative jaesuk was the best choice to give him more screen time and make hilarious moments but i think if they grouped him with KJK he might feel more comfortable but not funny.I felt bad for jaesuk because he had to manage all of thing alone specially in last game but fortunately LSJ opened up more in end

Lols, we've said enough. It's only a variety program. Her, LSJ nor MCW's life depend on it. What matters is there are always people who will test our patience and will, and how we react to it. MCW has to learn to do the same. The response is Korea has been predominantly positive to LSJ and MCW on RM, but if it wasn't, they would still have to learn to take criticism. People with perspectives like Mandy are all over the internet. Opinions are cheap nowadays, free and easily given. You don't need a penny for peoples' thoughts. What is precious is the ability to self-reflect and learn to stay quiet when everyone else is trying to make their opinions heard.

Be understanding. Everyone goes through a period of stubbornness and immaturity. Some people are just more lucky than others to find their way out of that kind of mentality faster. Be glad, you aren't in that group anymore.

Honestly you are way too aggressive and though you didn't come across as some anti, you sort of do now

Honestly, if that's what it comes off as, can't do much. Like I said very many times, I'm here to express an opinion. In this case I said I didn't like something. If people find that anti-like, then that's too bad. Now this may sound rude, but I really don't care nor bother catering to the more 'dominant' view if I don't believe in it. And I'm not here to please people, so really, if I come off as anti, so be it...

Opinions can be expressed, but maturity is shown in the tone of expression. The way you phrase your opinions will lead to people thinking that you're biased.

Plus, you said that you're not bothering to reply to people's negative comments about LSJ, but isn't it the same when you write your own defending him? Does it matter where your comment is at?

People can think what they want really. I'm not here to change anyone's opinion on me if they're stuck on one thing. That's their choice. As for not replying to comments but 'defending' Seo-jin instead - umm actually, no it's not the same. I don't go around accusing people of being haters for expressing their views. I go around expressing mine instead. There's a big difference to that, which you can't see, clearly.

Too many over confident 'thoughts' from just a single person..

An advice peeps:
"Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience"

i was not going to join the argument because reasoning with blind fans is not the smartest thing to do. but some commenters here cannot take simple criticism. if a person does not like a guest of think the person is boring, why is it necessary to scream foul? it reflects so much of the maturity of the fandom too. i found her okay (better than last week when she was so shy) but her fans are making too much noise. fan are reps of their favs and now even if i love her as an actress, i dont want to be associated with her admirers.

I think it is too far by judging the entire fandom without knowing the full situation. Have read the comments by the same poster in the previous entry for RM epm 228 and to me, I understand why some of her fans feels irritated by someone who constantly picking on her even go to the extend of insulting the fans.

how do you know if i know the full situation or not? youre assuming things. i read all the comments and its insult for insult, accusation for accusation. the person wrote chae won is boring and got multiple comments calling her hater, bias and other things. i thought the fandom is insanely immature and cannot handle criticism. so of course the person would too. if the initial comment was respected/ignored or fans replied a simple they liked her or she was fun, i think this would be over by now. or maybe not even started. if you don't look at both sides and say she started it, things will not get better. i'm a moonlight but if i saw the initial comment, i would have left it at "i found her fun and seo jin as well" and leave it at that.

I'm not a fan of both actors, but I think the original poster clearly had malice in her comments. I've actually read the previous recap too, thinking that international fans revived their interest in RM. But nope, it was just fan wars. Honestly, there are much more boring guests on RM. MCW isn't even anywhere near the worst of the lot, but she's getting the most "hate" so far.

Plus, everything goes both ways. The OP also has a tendency to want to have the last word. i.e. she can't take criticisms as well. Your comment actually sounds like your supporting her when both sides should rest their case.

From an objective point of view, to put it in a bad way, the OP asked for it. I may be completely wrong, but she probably expected the backlash and is happy to continue the crossfire.

Very entertaining episode. I found that lee seo jin grumpiness was not annoying or rude because it's just a show and everybody seems to have a lot of good time. Don't be too serious guys.
My favourite part were when running man member tried to make lee seo jin annoyed in overacting way such as all members try to listen to the instruction while pricking their ears together or ji suk jin made a poem based on lee seo jin name. That's hilarious for me :D

Thanks for the recap! :)

I personally didn't find Seo Jin that entertaining. He was funny but he wasn't that hilarious to me. He didn't annoy me throughout the entire episode but at certain moments I would just roll my eyes. I was glad the RM members found it funny though...even if Gary's laughs seem a little too exaggerated. So I wouldn't mind seeing Seo Jin again even if he never wants to come back on RM.

I did enjoy Moon Chae Won. She's adorkable and her late reaction to getting her nametag ripped off did have me laughing for quite a while. She's not "funny" but I can't help but laugh at anything she does.

And finally, I didn't realize how much I liked Seung Gi until these two latest episodes of RM. His personality is awesome and I actually felt bad for the hidden camera mission at the start of the episode. His face when he realized he got pranked was priceless.

I totally agree with your comment. I dont know who LSJ before RM and maybe that's why I dont find him hilarious in this episode. And I liked MCW too as maybe she's not funny, but she can made me laughing tho'.

Well, nobody can pleases everyone, right? So i think its okay for anyone who liking/hating LSJ or MCW, just dont spread the hate and keep loving RM.

I was very proud of MCW in this episode. She became more at ease with the cast members and really got into the spirit of the games. As far as LSJ goes, I found his grumpiness in RM to be quite funny. I hope that people who found him annoying do realize that it's just his variety show persona. RM (for the most part) is a scripted show and the cast members were banking on his grumpy persona to come out so they can play off of it. He came on the show for many reasons.. to promote the movie, as a favor to his friend Lee Seung Gi and also because he adores his niece and she likes RM so he was able to have her tag along and watch from the sidelines. I think his true personality is not quite grumpy but more like that of a reserved person.

Also, It think Moon Chae Won looks gorgeous and I like that she has this healthy figure. It's nice to see a korean female celebrity not looking like a stick figure.

I actually enjoyed the grumpy guest; he was much more fun to watch than so. who doesn't participate out of shyness or melts into the backround.

The games were quite boring though.

Most annoying guest in RM's History, if there's a poll for "Who is the worst guest in RM" i'd definitely vote for this old guy.

Cannot find this episode to be entertaining, I feel sorry for RM's members, staff, LSG and MCW. MCW are getting comfortable with variety thingy and it's all ruined by a lazy old man.

All look like to b forced to b funny around that annoying and ultra-high-esteem actor.

Those who find Lee Seo-jin annoying, pls watch his other variety shows before commenting.

Clearly you guys did not know much about him and just keeping crit[cise him for being annoying and grumpy on RM.

Luckily only the international fans are ignorant because there is not much issue with his attitude on RM in Korea.

Seems like there're mixed reactions about Lee Seo Jin's appearance on RM. Personally, I find his personality very different and refreshing. His grumpiness is endearing, not annoying. The whole episode, his screen presence really had me smiling. He is definitely different from the majority of the guests that have appeared on RM. And the RM members seemed to have really enjoyed their time so I think it all worked out well.

The grumpy guy routine was fairly entertaining at first, but it got old pretty fast for me. I realize this is how he "sells" his public persona -- and in small doses it works great -- but the moment an RM guest starts to look like he's wishing somewhere else and when there's no let-up to this approach, it just wears away your enthusiasm as a viewer.

you can almost feel the effort of the RM regulars (who were trying their darnedest) to somehow ease the strain, but in the end the whole thing just sagged at the seams. it's a pity really, because RM was just starting to build a good momentum for this year too. Seung-gi was a great guest but even his best efforts (as well as those of the RM cast) aren't enough to carry the weight (the other 2 guests) for this episode.

LSJ was annoying, yes, hilarious, slightly. but i don't dislike him. he was annoying in an anti-climatic-cold-humour-dead-pan-serious way. i think what makes him a unique character on running man is that i don't recall any guest who behaves like him, instead of clamouring for attention and screentime, he was trying his best to shun it, which has the unfortunate effect of drawing more attention, therefore there was a refreshing shift in the dynamics of interaction

This episode is bad imo. The grumpy guest ruined it.
To those who told people like me to go watch other films/variety shows to know more about Seo Jin, I'LL PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE. I'm RM fan, not Hallyu fan. I don't give a damn care about who the guest is, what he/she has achived. All i care is their performance in RM. So don't advice me to watch other Korean stuffs.

Why did i say Seo Jin ruind the episode? Not like i hate him, i just find grumpy characters uninterested. It's uniterested because they are so predictable. I guarantee you, when i was watching this epidode (229), 90% of the time i foresaw correctly what Seo Jin would say or act. If you are a scriptwriter or something like that and you reached some level, you will understand.

i really dislike it when everyone gangs up together to make a fool out of someone else. So the first part with the 8 vs 2 mission was really boring to me.

other than that , this was a fun episode but Lee Seojin really dragged it down because of is his descpicable attitude. If you don't wanna be on the show, don't come. If you're here, do a professional job ffs!

The entire cast went out of their way to make it funny despite his poor attitude and they sometimes managed to do it.
Thumbs up to Moon Chae Won's silly, odd looking bodygag!

I thought this episode was hilarious. I can see why some people thought Lee Seojin's grumpiness was annoying. Sometimes, in a competitive, high-spirited show like Running Man, you want everyone to be earnest and give it their all. And, if someone like LSJ was a regular on the show, the grumpiness would get old pretty fast. But, I thought LSJ for a guest appearance was comedy gold. Why? Because I felt as though he was unintentionally pranking all the other cast members. In the first challenge, everyone was mentally scheming and running all over the place while LSJ just sat in a hotel room and destroyed people's efforts by nonchalantly telling them they've been ousted. Kinda like saying "Hey, I know you've been running up and down halls on various floors and I've just been boredly sitting in this chair but you're out and I'm still in". It's such a jerk move but I thought it was hilarious. Then in the second challenge, when he kicked Monday's couple's shoe so that it wouldn't go in the basket, I just busted out laughing so hard. As for LSJ's reluctance in doing the tasks, I think it's not just his TV persona, but I think he genuinely feels uncomfortable doing outlandish things. I'm an introvert and so I can relate. But the endearing thing about LSJ is that even though he grumbles about doing things out of his comfort zone, he will still do it. He could have insisted on not being the runner on the third try but he did it anyways and he may not have been running full out but I did feel as though he sincerely tried. Of course the biggest prank on everyone, is that even after expending the least amount of effort and caring the least about winning, LSJ still managed to be on the winning team. It's like with GOF. He genuinely does not want to do all that stuff and yet he very competently takes good care of the grandpas. And we know it wasn't easy because we saw LSG go through it.
