Han Groo offered leading role in Scholar Who Walks the Night

Now THAT’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout. Casting news for Han Groo (Marriage Not Dating) is always happy news, but when it’s for the leading role in a highly anticipated drama, it’s cause for celebration. Fusion vampire fantasy historical drama Scholar Who Walks the Night has been picked up by MBC for a summer broadcast, and is now courting Han Groo to play the leading lady. The show has been in development for a while, and though Park Hae-jin (Bad Guys) was in contention to star last we heard, his reps released a statement that he’s already turned it down.

The drama is an adaptation of a popular webtoon by writers Jo Joo-hee and Han Seung-hee, set in a version of Joseon where vampires walk the night. The story centers around the young daughter of a nobleman who loses everything when her father is framed for a crime. She starts crossdressing in order to sell books to make ends meet, and ends up meeting a handsome and mysterious vampire scholar. The mystery also includes an evil vampire who resides in the palace.

I know nowadays it’s a cliche to have a crossdressing heroine in a historical drama, but since the script is being penned by writer Jang Hyun-joo who worked on Coffee Prince’s adaptation, I’m hoping for some magic stardust mojo. Directing is PD Lee Sung-joon, who was the second PD on Empress Ki, May Queen, and The Moon That Embraces the Sun.

If Han Groo signs on to play the heroine, that character had better have some spunk, is all I’m saying. Don’t waste a kickass actress (Have you seen Girl K?) on a damsel in distress. It’s just all wrong. I know it’s a lot to ask, but I reeeeeeally (truly, madly, deeply) want an epic fantasy drama with a strong mythology and a sweep-you-off-your-feet romance for this. I’ve been burned by promises of grandeur before, so I don’t want to get my hopes up… Aw, who’re we kidding, my hopes are up and away, damn them.

Scholar Who Walks the Night is being planned for the Wednesday-Thursday slot following the Hong sisters drama Jeju Island Gatsby, which puts the premiere sometime in July.

I'm getting SKKS vibes, which isn't a bad thing!

Han Groo is ♥ I wonder who her leading man is.... it's sad that Haejin turned it down though.

Who can play vampire well? (Aside from Song Jae-rim? hehe)

Lee Soo-hyuk?

Just don't let the SOGC wig department near him.

I think everyone looks gorgeous/smexy in SOGC other than Im Ju-hwan. His wig is embarrassingly ugly but Jang Hyuk looks so hot in the many different hairstyles they give him. The costuming for everyone is awesome too, again excluding Im Ju-hwan. Not sure what the stylists have against him lol

Haha~ I don't watch it but have seen the screencaps.

Soo Hyuk has shaken free from the vampire aura I think. I liked him much better in Valid Love as Carpenter Kim and I think despite his unique looks, he pulls off a more "normal" character so well. and out of all the characters his stayed the most normal, despite all...he carried it well

I've seen four of her projects, and she's talented, charming and versatile - everything you could want in a lead actress. I'm glad public broadcast is finally, FINALLY starting to recognise talent in its younger-gen actresses, and I'm really glad she's up for greater visibility.

(now please let her confirm and let the script and leading man be good).

A little bit out of topic but tvN is seriously awesome when it comes to casting actors/actresses as main leads in its dramas hence giving them a chance to be recognized which public broadcast don't seem to have the "guts" to do.
Just look at Sooyoung/Eunji/Seo In Gook/Go Ara/Jung Woo/Han Groo/Yeon Woo Jin/Siwan/Lee Joon/Yoo In Na ... etc.
SERIOUSLY, they are just too amazing <3
Of course, good script and directing are also needed but yeah', I like the fact they don't really care if you aren't that well-known and just look at your talents.

ON THE TOPIC NOW, I freakin' love Han Groo. She mindblew me in Marriage Not Dating. She gave so much life to her character and she had chemistry with all the other cast members in particular YWJ. They were so so good together ... Where would I find another great romcom like this one ? Whatever, I have read about that adaption for a long time now so I am all in.

For the lead role, I don't want Park Hae Jin because I want Sooyoung and him in the Cheese in the Trap's adaption. And yeah', I am biased but I don't freakin' care. I can already imagine the two of them as Hong Sul and Yoojung, haha <3

well, Go Ara doesn't really belong on this list considering she was already booking public broadcast drama leads (and being criticised for poor acting) for years before 1994 happened.

but I am glad that tvN etc at least try to pay attention to talent while casting instead of blindly relying on idol fanbases or (worse) an actor's looks alone. The one time they did try to cast an idol without making him audition first, I think we can all agree that was a stinker - but at least they learned their lesson and didn't do it again.

Go Ara was one of the weakest among the Answer Me 1994 cast, I am still struggling to understand how she suddenly got so popular. Props to her for willingly destroying her 'pretty girl' image, but when acting alongside Jung Woo and Yoo Yeon Seok her lack of skills was very obvious.

0

Please do. I am guessing it is a webtoon again?

0

No! Hehe. It's a novel turned movie franchise about sparkly vampires! It's weird. It's like Healer in that it appeals to a specific, relatively harmless, group of fans.

Some of those fans can get quite scary though. But only if you always insult their taste and imply that they're brainless, hormone-driven people for not agreeing with your preferences.

Other than that, the fans seem normal. And the book itself is harmless fluff. I personally know a couple of lawyers, engineers, doctors, and teachers who love this "Twilight" thing. They seemed like smart, perfectly functional ladies to me. Definitely not inclined to be in a dysfunctional relationship with a mind-reading bloodsucker.

So don't be turned off by freaky stories you hear about Twilight and its fans. You always get a couple of those in any fandom. (Like me for Song Jae Rim.) :D

I wouldn't recommend the book to you though. Maybe try Dracula if you're curious about vampires. That one is really hair-raising and closer to old wives tales about bloodsuckers.

0

ahh I see so it is one those those bestselling books that just pass me by I guess. you can find me in the crafts or design section, usually. or mythology /culture.

I googled, seems like it is pretty old, must have left quite a trace then

0

@mary - you really think Twihards are "harmless"? Nothing wrong with liking a book but the fans can put any kpop fandom.to shame, I never hear of fans of other works involved in stabbing incidents and sending racist abuse to the main actor's new gf.

Healer fans only talked about their bias a lot, they are not completely crazy like the Twilight crowd.

@redfox - it statrts as a fluffy vampire book but the treatment of women is a lot like Kdramas we hate for poor treatment of women. I liked the first book but the 4th book in the series has the second lead boy getting over his love for the main girl by............becomung 'soulmates' with her baby daughter
. Who grows very fast so apparently it is ok for a 17 year old to feel that kind of atrachment for a baby/small child.

0

@redfox, it's a classic. Like Frankenstein. Or Tom Sawyer. I'm surprised you haven't read it, if you like mythology. It sounds right up your alley.

@pigsnout, I wish you'd read my comment carefully.

0

@mary - I would say Twilight is more in the category of Flowers in the Attic etc than Dracula and other books that actually use decent English (even with my limited English skills I can tell it reads like a decent fanfiction and not a classic book).

And you said you know many functional adult women who are fans.....that does not change the fact that most fans of the books react very poorly to any criticism of it. I used to be a fan myself until book 4 came out and many, many fans were put off by the poor storylines and wtf wolf loves baby storyline and we expressed our disappointment as fans only to be hated by people who refused to accept thatanything in thr books was wrong or creepy. And this was the majority of fans at the time. I left the fandom because of their victim mentality and attacking everyone who disagrees with them, but I have never seen that kind of attitude from other fandoms when I said they were not perfect, like Harry Potter and Hunger Games.

Anyway I was young when I read Twilight and now I am.shocked I considered it romantic. I liked it for having 'clean' romance without bed scenes etc but I can't continue to like a book whose hero is everything we criticise about kdrama heroes (except for the forced kissing - second lead does that).

0

@pigsnout... I really didn't want to spell this out, but I was being sarcastic.

(And in case you missed it, redfox was also being sarcastic. She's totally aware what Twilight is and the stereotype of a Twihard. She mentioned it quite a few times in her past comments and refers scathingly to the "twilight generation".)

I was pointing out that, for redfox's intents and purposes, the only common thing about Healer and Twilight is they both have an immature fanbase.

I was explaining that it's stupid to think of people in such simple terms. And that it's wrong to keep making snide remarks about a person based on her taste in books and dramas. Or to classify someone as a crazy delulu just because you had a not-so-nice encounter with another person from the same fandom.

Because a smart person can like a totally fanservicey, WTF book as Twilight AND still be smart and not susceptible to abuse in a relationship. Case in point: javabeans always squees when she recaps, but I have no doubt that if a guy grabbed her wrist irl, she'd kick him swiftly in the nuts.

As for Dracula, since redfox professes to hate useless fluff and appears to love deep, serious stuff, I suggested Dracula. Her disdain for the Twilight generation seemed to have turned her off the vampire genre, and I thought it sucks to close yourself off to that because Dracula makes for some great, spooky reading.

TL;DR, by comparing Healibers and Twihards, I wasn't saying that Healibers are cray-cray delulus. Rather the opposite. That most fans are normal, decent human beings. And it's too bad that they're being unfairly hated on by some people just because of the annoying actions of the crazier members of their fandoms.

0

mary, you totally win at life. Jus' sayin'. ?

0

um mary you are right that I know of its existance, but not the content, and in my words, twilight generation are people who mention it all the time as the best thing ever, while not being aware of actual classic literature at all

but I seriously have no idea of the plot or annything just that I have heard opinions that it is pretty badly written. so i have decided not to touch it

Even though I'm not familiar with her, I'm anticipating this because I find the plot interesting since I haven't watched a drama with a vampire during the Joseon era and many people have commended her for her acting chops.

Fuck yes! I hope she accepts the role. I love crossdressing themes because they're just so awesome, and set in Joseon sageuk style? Fuck yes.

All of my favourites themes. Sageuk? Check. Crossdressing? Check. Vampires? Fantasy, romcom? Check. Han Groo? Check!

Now, the leading guy! Nugulkka? Ji Chang Wook? :3

Ugh. Another vampire story? Ugh +++++ I was already sick of the West milking them, and now I have to go through the same in Kdramaland? FML.

Anyway. It's a sageuk, and it'll have Han Groo. I'll still give it a try, but I'm already biased against it, it'll take very good writing and directing to win me over :/

Plus points if the male lead turns out to be someone I like too!

Also, potential male leads to match her who could look suitably vampiric?

I would love Kim Jae-wook (a girl can dream) or Im Shi-wan in the role.

Or, if I was really going for broke, Song Joong-ki is coming out of the military in May, if he doesn't take the Kim Eun-seok drama I'd love to see him in this instead (assuming it has a decent script and isn't subject to the usual fantasy sageuk script fails).

Finally. Freakin finally! She's back and in a network drama headlining one of the decently hyped up drama! I'm really not into vampires and was going to skip this, but they had to court one of the few actresses I'd watch in anything. Now I'm actually excited for this so hopefully the leading man is as awesome as Han Groo is.

Since its airing in summer, I'd imagine a whole lot of actors are free. Not sure what Seung-gi is up to after his movie release but I'd love for him and Han Groo to pair up! But really, anyone who's decent and can bring the drama more hype in SK so she can really move up in popularity and recognition. She deserves it so much more than many other actresses who keeps getting offers left, right, centre.

I really dont see a lot of a vampire in Park Seo Joon. No, that´s not it. I don´t WANT him to be a vampire because he is such a you know... I would refuse to believe that sunshine boy is a vampire. I will not accept it. it would cause a trauma. although he had a few moments in KMHM where he was intimidating, threatening kinda dark. but it still didn´t suit him. and left me in a very weird state like something is wrong with his head

Exactly, MBC likes reuniting hit OTP and they also like casting the second lead as first lead in back to back dramas. This is all things considered a possible scenario. PSJ/HG together again, I wouldn't mind at all. Both are natural actors, it'd be great.

Glad Han Groo was offered a lead role in another kdrama. Finally...it's about time for one of the Big 3 major networks to recognize her acting talents. Too bad it took them so long to catch up with Korean & International viewers.

Whether its Kim Jae-Wook, Kim Woo Bin, Lee Jun-Ki, Lee Seung-Gi, Lee Soo-Hyuk, Park Seo-Joon, Park Hae-Jin, or Seo In-Guk each of these actors are certainly capable of pulling off the handsome and mysterious vampire scholar vibe.

Now for the day when the the pool of females in this age group with acting talent like the aformentioned men are automatically considered, scouted, and cast for kdramas on par with the men.
