Misaeng writer returns with new fantasy manhwa adaptation

I’m sure it’s no surprise that drama writer Jung Yoon-jung (Misaeng, Monstar, Arang and the Magistrate) is a hot commodity these days; Jung has announced that her next project will be another manhwa adaptation, this time a fantasy historical drama. While that sounds like a huge departure from her last hit adaptation Misaeng, she’s also the writer who filled the quirky supernatural world of Arang and the Magistrate with colorful gods, reapers, ghosts, and humans, and created a full mythology that was engaging, suspenseful, and just plain fun.

The new project is an adaptation of the manhwa series Habaek’s Bride, better known in English as Bride of the Water God. (Habaek is the name of the god, and he’s technically a river god, but that’s the title you’ll find the translations of the comic books in.) The original manhwa by Yoon Mi-kyung was published in Wink magazine in 24 volumes over the last 8 years.

The story is about a young woman who comes from a poor family, and gets paid to take the place of the girl who’s supposed to be sacrificed to the water god from their village that year. But instead of taking her as a sacrifice, the water god falls in love with her and takes her as his bride. He’s been cursed by his first love to transform into a child by day and a man by night, and so even his bride doesn’t realize that both are the same man.

It’ll be a fantasy historical romance drama about the epic love between a god and a human, and will traverse the earthly and god realms much like Arang and the Magistrate did. I really loved how whimsical that drama was, and there have been very few supernatural shows that were so solidly written, so I’m excited to see that the writer is returning to that genre. Listen, I know it’s early to start casting, but Yoo Seung-ho is back from army duty now, and he made such a good god in Arang. Who better to play a man and a boy than a man-boy? You know you want to…

Bride of the Water God is in early development, with no broadcaster attached yet.

I think I might have read some of this but a) I was really more into manga than manhwa, and b) it doesn't really sound like something I'd read.

Yay! I LOOOOOVE the world where Arang was set in, and if that’s anything to go by to assess this writer’s talent for fantasy, then I’m pretty sure this manhwa’s adaptation is already set to own me this early in the game! Can’t wait! It’s been a long while since we had a good fantasy drama in the form of Arang so it’s super great to have a new one on the horizon!

And yes, Yoo Seung-ho seems like the perfect fit!

THE FEELS!!! This was a beautifully drawn love story. I hope that they can appropriately adapt it without making it seem cheesy or cheap. Fantasy can be very tricky to believably pull off, esp with a lower budget (thinking of The Night Watchman's Journal, whose graphics were less than stellar). We have been spoiled by movies!!! Haha. Let's pray for an amazing (and beautiful) cast.

The premise sounds interesting. Did the manga end? I might check it out because the art is pretty.

I don't know about Yoo Seung Ho...strangely he still seems like a young boy to me. From those mentioned, I think Joo Ji Hoon would do suit better but I have a feeling the casting might skew younger. I just hope it's someone I like..

Oh My! I love love this manhwa.. I hope they would be good actors and actresses with visuals and acting that will match this. The crews will have a hard time picking out costumes and places for the filming because the manwha was really beautifully done. I hope they will not ruin it.

I remember being so excited about this manhwa because the artwork is stunning, and the premise is interesting enough. But then it just got so confusing even beautiful artwork cannot make me stay. Hope the drama will be better. On an irrelevant note, there was this manhwa that about a princess who cross-dressed in place of her dead twin brother and grew up to be the King. I think the title is Yeonmo. If only that one could be adapted too.

Hope they do justice to it. The team has a great challenge cutout for themselves. In fact its a 50-50 foolhardy and bravery.
Either way i ll be keen to see what they can make.

I seriously don't see the appeal of this manhwa. It has a promising concept of God and human relationship, a solid effort in world building backed up by gorgeous arts. However, everything goes down the drain as the author attempts to drag the story out with lazy characterization and an overly convoluted plot.

Aside from being absolutely dense, the main female character is frustratingly passive and indecisive. Flat and tedious are the words to describe her. She jumps back and forth from decision to decision faster than a gymnast and I couldn't understand what in the world this girl actually wants. As the story goes on and on about the nonsensical Gods' politics which involve gazillions of different gods whom no one really give a damn about, the female lead becomes almost a non-factor in her own story.

Too bad Chang Ge Xing is a manhua because it is the real masterpiece centering on a genius female strategist that needs a drama adaption.

I thought the studio that adapted Hana Yori Dango and produced Goong had the rights to this manhwa?

I have a bad feeling about the male casting for this.

my votes are for lee yeon-hee, shin minah, song joongki, ji chang wook, lee soo hyuk
i love the premise- it kind of sounds like a fanfic of spirited away tbh. read a few chapters but the politics between the gods get tedious v. quickly and the main character is just sort of yanked around in between- hopefully her character will be more interesting in the drama. it does seem like a drama that would cost a lot to produce....

OMG! When I was reading the manwha (which was years ago) I was like I wish they would make this into a drama. I'm so happy and excited but at the same time nervous. Hopefully they don't ruin the manwha for me though. They really need to pick a good cast. *fingers cross* hopefully it's gonna be awesome!

I love the manhwa!!!! Please I need to see a manly actor in this not the flower boy type. I'm not trying to look down on flower boy actors, they all good... but look at the manhwa, he doesnt look cute.
In my head, I have So Ji Sub, Gong Yoo, Kim Jae Wook, Joon Ji Hoon, Lee Soo Hyuk, Kang Dong Won, Hyun Bin, Won Bin, Lee Byung Hun, TOP, etc. As long as they dont look cute.
And the actress, Shin Min Ah, Kim Seo Eun, Yoon Eun Hye, Jun Ji Jyun, Song Hye Kyo, Lee Yu Bi, Yoo In Ah, etc
If this really going to be adapt to a drama, please make this work..whoever the actor or actress is. I love this manhwa, please dont spoil it because of some actor or actress

Lee SungKyung would be perfect for the main girl part. And a tall male (who can act) would be wonderful for the water god, like Park Seo-joon.

I like new faces and actors/actresses who have potential. Let new faces shine. I am so tired of seeing the same people over and over again. I hope the casting director picks someone who has god-like looks. :)

Since, there are several manhwa live adaptations now, I wonder if they'll give the manhwa, "Sarasah" an adaptation as well. I swear, it's awesome. I suggest people to read it. :D

I hoped that they find a better hunk Korean actors that can match the hotness of Habaek...

and as for the actress who will play Soah, I'd suggest that it would be Ha ji Woon but she's a overrated actress...maybe, a newbie actress who has the talent can be suitable...I'd just hope they do justice on adapting this manhwa into a drama because I loved Habaek of the Water God ever since I start reading it since 2009 and I kept repeating on reading this beautifull manhwa...I can't wait for it to be released in a drama adaptation!

this would be such an awkward drama to film...you would constantly see an innocent child play in the drama, and a man at night..this..just doesn't work, if the producers are going to do this project...
