Song Hye-gyo to romance Song Joong-ki for Descended From the Sun?

On one hand, I totally see the reasoning in courting Song Hye-gyo to headline the human melodrama Descended From the Sun: Her starpower aligns with what I expect of the highly buzzed-about project, which comes from hitmaker writer Kim Eun-sook (Heirs, Secret Garden, A Gentleman’s Dignity) and is also currently trying to sign on Song Joong-ki for his army comeback drama.

On the other hand, Song Hye-gyo and Song Joong-ki falling in love while dodging danger as a soldier and a doctor working overseas in disaster zones? Hrm. I won’t say it can’t happen, but right now I don’t see it. Noona romances don’t trip me up (and in dramaland, you’d be out of luck if they did since almost everything is a noona romance these days), but she does have a different vibe than he does — I find her aloof and often inaccessible, and him more approachable — and I’m curious to see whether they’d find chemistry together. (Perhaps Song Joong-ki will have developed new shades after army duty?)

But that aside, this is a seriously ambitious project and it’s likely that considerations like star selling power, investor confidence, and global appeal would be the primary concerns; Descended From the Sun is aiming to broadcast in Korea and China simultaneously, and Song Hye-gyo is definitely on the shortlist of Hallyu actresses popular in China. The only way this drama could cast for more appeal in the Chinese market is to get Kim Soo-hyun instead. Maybe in a threesome with Lee Min-ho, and retitled Descended From You From Another Sun.

As of now, both castings are still just possibilities; Song Joong-ki hasn’t finalized his comeback project yet and Song Hye-gyo recently took a meeting with the producers recently to discuss the project, but has not decided. The drama will air on KBS this summer (marking a departure for Writer Kim, who had worked for SBS for most of her career), with a target premiere date in July.

Be honest, nowadays I watch korean dramas based on the storyline rather than the actors. So I guess I will decide to watch at least after teaser released. Some of big names don't guarantee the story will be good though.

Agreed. I'll try a drama based on who is cast, but it's really about the story and what I enjoy. Most of my favorite dramas are on tvN with lesser known cast, but they actually try to provide a good story.

Sometimes I feel bad for the script writers and directors because if the dramas got recognized by many, the actors will be the first thing people remembered. They forgot how important the PDs and script writers role for giving drama success.

I couldn't agree more. It doesn't matter how talented an actor or actress is, if the director and writer don't have a cohesive story, it's not going to work.

Look at Misaeng. The cast was fantastic but the show could have tanked without the right PD/writer combo. It wasn't an exciting show and in lesser hands, it would have been dull and painful to watch (in a bad way). Instead, IMHO, it was compelling, human, and painful in all the right ways.

And we get shows with great talent and a plot that should be awesome on paper but it fizzles because they don't know what to do with it.

The flip side is also true. Sometimes a mediocre story is successful solely because of the cast (and their intensely loyal fandoms). Hate to say it, but this writer enjoyed the benefit of that on her last drama.

True, but in this case, if they are trying to reach out to the Chinese market, then the casting matters a lot. While Song Joong-Ki is popular, he is not yet on the hallyu train, at least not in China.

Also, if they plan to air simultaneously in China, then they need to have the drama completed before airing, as the Chinese government passed a ban earlier this year that prevents any drama from airing before completing; a hard hit to Korean dramas that have been streaming on web portals in China, and have been banking on that extra revenue.

Also the Chinese aesthetic is different, if going by how they have negatively reacted to the goddess of Korean Pop, Kim Yoona's, casting in a Chinese drama currently in production.

Song Joong Ki is a fantastic actor, so I'm sure whatever role he's given he'll make it work. Song Hye Kyo had a turnaround with her last drama, so I think she'll be fine. I'm iffy on Song Joong Ki accepting this drama because he deserves to come back with a well-written project. I'd love to see him play a meaty character, but I don't have faith in this writer to go anywhere beyond the popular tropes and surface level characterizations she's been writing.

I can understand why both of them would want to take on this project though. It's almost a guaranteed success/ratings hit.

It's so easy to casually dismiss a well-known writer's life's work: "popular tropes and surface level characterisations".

If her writings are good enough to for Korea's biggest stars and production houses, and are "almost guaranteed success/ratings hits", then maybe she is doing something right.

There are times when something meaty and meaningful is welcome, and there are times when we watch K drama for relaxation and escapism. As to whether there is heart, it depends how you approach it.

Kim Eun Sook has a limited writing scope. Her recent projects are just trendy dramas with little depth or complexity to them. True, she is a well-known writer; that doesn't make her a good scriptwriter. It's the same with A list actors. Their popularity isn't reciprocal to their acting talent. You have Lee Min Ho, who is a very popular actor, but that doesn't change how static he is when it comes to acting.

What is considered by "doing something right" is just sticking to her normal formula of what she knows people will eat up. It's the same as popular actors who choose projects for popularity over projects that will hone their skills.

In response to your last paragraph, how one chooses to enjoy a drama is different from the quality of the work itself.

'For the masses' is the key point, here. If they really are thinking of releasing this simultaneously in SK and China, that means that filming will have to be done far before broadcast so that it can be approved by the Chinese government. The current political bosses are cracking down on the media, and this means that nothing is going to get through unless it toes the party line.
Frankly, kow-towing to the Chinese government makes me a lot less interested in this drama - I predict it will be even more trite and formulaic that her previous dramas. A Chinese-approved interesting internationally focused drama? Don't make me laugh.

@j2hr it's going to air in the fall at the earliest. God knows how long SARFT will take to approve this, but I wouldn't worry about it as this drama has nothing to do with Chinese history.

is it fall or July? as i read from this post, it said "...with a target premiere date in July."

Their aim is to sell China market easily with experience price. The hit writer already had proved many hit dramas. I believe it will not be miss. But for China market, they need the hottest male actors like LMH,KSH, and LJS . Don't get me wrong. I don't say SJK can't. SHK is okay. For SJK, he hasn't proved himself as a rating king and one of the most popular hallyu stars. KBS is failing these days. So they are trying to work with producers with KSH and this one also.

Right. For China market, they need LMH or LJS. But we wanna see SJK for his comeback. We all know LMH can make it hit even whether his acting is good or not. I heard that Pinocchio sold to China with the most expensive price ever. So LJS can make it too. These two are better than SJK But SJK is confirmed.

I think they're trying to grab the domestic audience with Song Joong Ki and the Chinese market with Song Hye Kyo.

Idk about SJK's ~hallyu star status~ but I think he's proved himself as a ratings king? Nice Guy was one of the last big hits KBS has had in terms of primetime shows. He owned 2012 - hit film, hit drama in his first leading role. He's one of the few actors in his age group that are popular AND have been critically lauded. He just didn't have a chance to build on it because he had to go into the army.

If we had KSH, LJS, and LMH in every buzz-worthy drama in order to appeal to the Chinese market I think I would get very bored of dramas. Give other actors a chance. I'm really looking forward to SJK's drama comeback. :').

I never really thought about the pairing and it could work, but they have different auras. And I was hoping this wouldn't be a noona romance.

If it were Kang Dong-won instead of Song Joong-ki, that could work better, but SJK is basically confirmed for this. And KDW may never return to dramaland. (I don't blame him)

I love both actors, and you can't really say they won't suit each other yet. If SHK confirms, I'll look forward to teasers for the drama, and give it a fair watch when it airs. I hope it works out for both of them.

I agree, though my first reaction was... "What?" The pairing doesn't seem like an obvious choice but they are really both so talented, why couldn't it work? I think SJK's character will just have to be kind of dark and brooding, then I can see them together. Maybe sometimes there is a use for male lead angst? I bet people worry that his "puppy with no worries" look just won't go with her serious vibe but that's about the character writing. He can do anything, so talented!

They're both capable actors in my mind, and I think they could have good chemistry. I'll wait to see what happens. The writing is important as well. I just hope they have well written characters.

Idk what to expect from Kim Eun-sook after SG and Heirs. I mean, I'm not greatly excited about this but I'm also not going to snub her after a few bad dramas. She could redeem herself with this drama, who knows? I'm hoping for that and I don't think we should disregard her better works such as City Hall and On Air.

I admit though, I like the premise of this show, and I hope it works out.

I don't them together either...As Javabeans said, she's too "aloof and inaccessible" , but me I just called her "cold" in her acting.

For a role of a doctor working for a charity, you need an actress that can show warmth in her acting, and she cannot express that.

Give me someone like Yoon Eun Hye and the chemistry between SJK and YEH will reach the roof.

Or JCW with YEH.

Common...YEH is popular also in China and in other Asian countries.

Besides, SHG just had a scandal, and as far as I know, the korean audience is not that forgiving.

They might win in China counting on her popularity, but they might loose domestically.

If it's going to be them, I'll be out, because I can't stand to watch "cold" actresses on screen.
It makes me feel frustrated, and that's not the reason I watch dramas.

I wouldn't say she can't express warmth. Now that's a bit of a stretch. "Cold" acting is what? Stiff, impersonal maybe, and Young was definitely not the cheery or bright type, I agree. But you can't deny her geniality in "Full House" or her love and tenderness for her son, in "A Brilliant Life."

As a person, I think she's quiet and closed-off, seems a bit unapproachable, but introverts are commonly mistaken to be that way. Acting is different from how you appear as a person though. It's fine if you don't think she's good, but I wouldn't debase her acting by saying she has a lack of warmth.

0

Required fields are marked *

For me, I wouldn't call her acting "cold", but when she's acting, I feel she's too... self-aware? Like, good actors will lose themselves in the role and you forget that this is actress X who was in movie Z some time ago. But with SHK, it's like she's aware that she's being filmed and she has to look "pretty" in a way. I don't know...can't really explain why even though I find her gorgeous, she's not one of my favourites.

For me, Song Hye Kyo is like Gong Hyo Jin and Im soo Jung, their acting is too exclusive to actors around their age (i.e Rain, Jo In Sung).. so it's hard to picture them acting with a much younger actors like Lee Min Ho and Kim Soo Hyun.

Me too. The age different is not that much. Song Jihyo and the leading man of the upcoming drama ex-girlfriend has a larger more age gap but nobody even mentioned it. I think its because Joongki is just to damn baby face its hard to picture him as a couple with Song Hye Kyo who gives off a mature classy vibe. SHK is better off paired with mature manly man like Hyunbin, So Ji Sub, Jo In Sung.
If SHK accept this role I'm really curious about their chemistry. Right know SHK just looks like a noona or an aunt next to Song Joongki. And I highly doubt Joongki matured after coming out of the army I've seen some recent pics and he still looks baby face even with that army cut.

This pairing sounds so odd and awkward I suddenly lost interest. I love SHK and like SJH enough individually. But them as a couple - so much no. Wish they'd either go for a younger actress or an older actor - so many options!

Noona romances are getting really old for me. There's just way too many in dramaland.

If you think about it, true noona romances (where the female lead is supposed to be older than the male lead) have basically been outsourced to tVN and IMO aren't going to be super common going forward. I don't think we can really call an actress being older than her counterpart a noona romance when it's the characters' ages that count. Given the current demographics of drama land, I'm always surprised when the actress isn't older to be very honest.

But yes, count me among the people hoping to see fewer WTF pairings going forward. This isn't quite WTF level but it's pretty close.

I can see what you mean on Noona romances not being a trend in the major networks. But for this drama, while characters would most likely be the same age or the woman younger, it makes it all the more awkward because Song Hye-kyo gives a very womanly, mature and older vibe. She's lovely but doesn't look anywhere close to being Song Joong-ki's age, forget younger. It might not be a Noona romance in theory but visually, there's no escaping that which I feel will definitely affect the chemistry and believability of the drama. Overall, it feels a bit like a casting fail.

I'm very certain KES tried casting much bigger names like Kang Dong-won, Jang Hyuk, Go Soo or Jo In-sung. But if she failed, I wish she adjusted the age range of the female lead she's looking for. This coupling just screams awkward to me although of course, they might prove me wrong eventually.

I don't think this will turn out to be another noona romance, as SJK definitely has the ability to pull off a character that's older than him in real life, despite having a baby face. His role in Tree with Deep Roots and Nice Guy definitely does not feel like characters in high school or in the 20's. This is one of the many reasons why I respect him as an actor. He is definitely on another level compared to LMH, KSH, LJS, and KWB.

I completely disagree with everything you just said. Firstly, Park Shi-yeon looked like his noona by a large margin in NG and I felt no chemistry whatsoever between them. SHK and her give off similar womanly and mature vibes which is indication enough to me that SJK might look extremely awkward with SHK - just like he did with PSY. He also felt very much in early 20s in both the dramas you just mentioned so I don't quite think he has the ability to somehow look older or the same age as Song Hye-kyo.

Secondly, he's a good actor, sure. But to me, KSH is as much a good actor when given the right roles. But this is a completely redundant argument because it's all personal opinion. I don't think some actors are as bad as some make them seem and neither do I think some are as great as their fans like to rave. In the end, we all make our own judgements.

... y so pressed? It's your opinion, so I respect that, but I think I'll hold on to my own, thanks. PSY and SHK have completely different vibes. PSY was supposed to be the noona, and he acted accordingly. Either way, if I didn't know her real age, I'd say SHK is 25.

I agree that KSH is a good actor, as seen in "dream high", but I haven't seen him give a nuanced performance or add depth to his characters yet. (I've seen all his works except the moon and the sun, so please let me know if he did that there, and I'll try to get past the young actors part)

Whoops. Didn't realize disagreeing with someone and having completely different opinions is not deemed as 'pressed'. Saaawry, but not sorry. You can hold onto your opinion. No one stopped you, and if you read me doing so, that's kinda your bad rather than mine (:

PSY and SHK has similar vibes for me, therefore I'll also hold onto the opinion that SJK won't be having any sort of chemistry with SHK other than looking like her younger brother. They can prove me wrong later on, I wouldn't mind. As for KSH, if you think he didn't give a 'nuanced performance' in Secretly Greatly (since you said you've seen all his work) then our standards of acting are extremely different. And that's fair. You can think what you like, and I'll be doing the same.

0

......but did you even watch Nice Guy, because episode 1 makes it clear PSY's character is older than SJK's. She was supposed to look like a noona!

And while I am not super enthused about this prospective pairing based on their acting styles (good individually, not sure how they will be together), please let's keep in mind Song Hye-kyo is only four years older than Song Joong-ki. Male leads who have that age gap or even a much larger one with their female leads get cast without a murmur but every time a female lead is a few years older, you get people crying about how noona romances are so bad.

I haven't heard a single peep on age grounds against, say, the pairing of Jang Hyuk and Oh Yeon-seo (11 year age gap), Yoochun and Shin Se-kyung (4 year age gap), Lee Joon and Go Ah-sung (4 year age gap), etc.

0

Required fields are marked *

And in your opinion if they said PSY was younger than him, it would be convincing that she's younger? She looked like a Noona because she was, character withstanding or not. Sorry, but I don't get fooled by what a production tells me believe specially it's a very obvious lie. Just like Lee Seung-gi looks nothing like HJW's age even if K2H forced that they were both 30. They can tell me all they want SHK is younger than SJK in the drama. But I ain't believing a whit of it.

Oh and I'm keeping in mind their ages, thank you very much. I don't need to 'murmur' about Jang Hyuk-Oh Yeon-Seo or any other couple out there because they don't feel awkward to me. I don't have time for this whole noona vs oppa romances accusations some people like to bring about in this site. I'll call out an awkward looking couple irrelevant on who's older - the guy or the girl. But even if I chose to just pick on the female being older and it looking bad to me, that's my choice. I see nothing wrong in that, and if you do, sorry but can't help you with it.

0

You bring up a fair point about double standards but the sense I got from Mandy's comment was that she didn't like casting discordant with characterization - I think most people share this sentiment and would just as soon cry foul if, say, Hyun Bin were cast opposite Suzy as contemporaries (and no, I'm not exaggerating with the comparison - I think Song Joong Ki looks devilishly young). You would just never see this happen because of the demographic shifts in dramas.

@Mandy - Park Shi-yeon is not Song Hye-kyo, her character in Nice Guy was supposed to be 4 years older than Song Joong-ki's, and she looked it. I don't know why you're conflating the two or saying that because Park Shi-yeon looked older, SHK must as well. And unless her being younger in the drama is hugely important in some way, I don't see the problem with just making it a same-age romance/noona romance depending on how they look. And I'm not writing them off before we've even seen a single shot of them together, unlike you/

@Annie - While I am not the hugest advocate of the SHK/SJK pairing, let's also keep in mind we haven't seen Song Joong-ki in anything in about three years, and he has been off to the army in that time. People generally look more mature when they come out, even baby-faced ones.

And while a Hyun Bin/Suzy pairing would be protested more on the grounds of differences in their skill levels than age (I don't see anyone pulling as many protests when it was the prospect of, say, So Ji Sub/Kim Ji-won in that drama), they have a 12 year age gap. That's rather different from a 4 year age gap between people in their 30s.

0

@Mandy how convenient that a huge age gap with an older man and younger woman never feels "awkward" to you even if there are so many of them.in dramaland like she pointed out, but a 4 years younger man/older actress couple you diss without even knowing anything other than the character's ages. And sexism is just people's opinion too, right? The opinion that a slightly older woman maybe playing slightly younger is a problem while with the men being older it's all ok...

The thing I saw on other sites is that SHK character is 33 years old, the same age as SHK herself. Is it that important that she looks younger? Or that she can act? I would understand if SHK was a wooden actress like Han Ga In but she acts decently in melos and she looked young 28 in That Winter.

@Annie - I understand you dislike noona romances but the double standard is real on this website. Javabeans/gf (one of them) once wished for 14 year old Kim Yoojung to have a loveline with 26/27 y/o Seo Joon Young and hardly anyone said that was wrong. Then you had KYJ at 15 getting paired with 30 y/o Lee Je Hoon and so many people thought it was ok because "their characters are only 2 years apart in age and this is Kim Yoojung's lead role".....and people 'ship' Kim So Hyun with Mickey Yoochun because she's his fan. Mandy never refers to any aspect of SHK's proposed character othervthan her age which is almost the same as her real age anyway.

@pogo The fact that you don’t see a problem with them making this a same-age drama shows you missed my entire point. Which is: Song Hye-kyo, just like Park Shi-yeon, looks older than Song Joong-ki in looks, aura, maturity, vibe etc etc etc. Therefore, making them same-age or her younger in a drama makes no visual sense. You can obviously allow the production to fool you into believing their characters were born in the same year. But like I said, that doesn’t work for me because I'm not gullible or easily fooled.

As for writing off the chemistry, that's what I like doing (without regrets whatsoever) to something that seems to me - obvious. Now, like I also said earlier, they can prove me wrong and I'll be none too happy because I have more to gain than anything to lose.

@pigsnout To put it bluntly, I don’t think you even understand the discussion going on right now. I did not ‘diss’ anyone (unless you have a different definition for the word) and neither do I need to know the characters ages. Whatever age their characters are is irrelevant. Why? Because they don’t look like they were born in the same year, which is my main issue. SHK looks very much like 33, if that’s the apparent age. SJK looks nothing like it. If the age was around 26-28, SJK looks like it and SHK wouldn’t. It’s not the acting skill and no one even brought it up, so I’m unsure as to why you’re even mentioning it.

Also, LOL, woah there, you jumped the gun a bit. Sexism? Of course someone had to insert a ridiculous, out of place, feministic comment in a thread like this; how predictable. Unfortunately, You. Don’t. Understand. The issue is not a “slightly older woman maybe playing slightly younger”. The issue is – repeating yet again - the man being paired with her looks nothing like the age she is. Which brings me back to the same exact conclusion: you have no idea what the discussion is even about.

pluss 1. I don't get song jong ki great acting that was claim by his fans also. I have seen nice guy but he is not that great as per claim.

hmmmm, I don't know how they'll vibe.

If they were looking for an A-list actress to match Song Joong-ki, I rather wish they'd consider Shin Mina. She has as much star power as he does and is only a year older, and they would look gorgeous together.

Shin Min Ah or even Yoon Eun Hye would have been great - they send out very youthful vibes and I wouldn't chortle if they had to call SJK oppa.

Absolutely! Shin Min Ah, Han Hyo Joo, or Moon Chae Won would match Song Joon Ki a bit better than Song Hye Kyo both looks-wise and aura-wise.

other than the age factor, Han Hyo-joo actually has a similar aura and look to Song Hye-kyo so I don't know how that will work out either.

Song Joong-ki and Moon Chae-won made an amazing screen couple, even she admitted he was her favourite of all her leading men so far.

I read that his character is older than hers, so technically it won't be a noona romance. I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to buy that if these two are cast. SHK is only four years older than SJK, but she seems much older to me. They're both insanely pretty and young-looking, but her vibe is of someone much older (IMO). But military service has likely made SJK a little rougher around the edges, and he isn't quite as baby-faced anymore, so maybe it could work. Regardless of who's cast, let's just hope that it's better than Heirs.

Required fields are marked *

Exactly. I don't really care if these two end up being cast but, IMO, they won't have the right vibe. She's an elegant beauty and he looks so much younger than he actually is - I don't see how he'd look like anything but her little brother.

I still like the sound of this plot, I love both actors and would be excited to see them in a drama together, but I can't with this writer. Heirs looked like a trainwreck from the get-go, and Secret Garden just didn't do it for me. I didn't get the buzz with both of them. It sounds like she's trying to do something new, so fingers-crossed! :)

Tell me about it. I seriously found nothing special about Secret Garden or Heirs other than the actors in it. Like everyone says. But train-wreck or not, her dramas always have high tv ratings. I wonder how she'll do this year when getting double digits in ratings is considered a success.

I hear you...seriously she's too boring.

I compare her acting to the current female lead in Hyde, Jekyll and Me: Han Ji Min; their acting makes me fall asleep....

I could not watch Heirs even though I like LMH, but because I was allergic to Park Shin Hye; Same goes with Pinocchio.

They keep casting all my fav. boys with these snooze-fest actresses and I guess I'm just not one of my boys big fans to get me over the boredom that these actresses make me feel.

I think Song Joong Ki is a real actor, not merely a star and would hate to see him do some sub-quality dramas-- even if they sell.

Soooo is it going to be a noona romance type of thing then if SJK signs ?? Because, god knows I love SJK to pieces but he kinda looks young. Haaaaa I like SJK and SHG a lot but together, with this story....I'm not sure. I wish the leading man was older.... or just older looking.
I'm dreaming here but can't Wonbin comeback to life with this project, yeah, I know I'm dreaming. Can't she do another cast line like the Gentlemen dignity one, this drama was really good and the cast was so well chosen, not too much eye candy and flower boys....
Anyway let's hope for the best !!

It's the writer's last work and many people thin it was terrible so they have concerns about her next work, why should they "shut up" about it?

And Heirs ended in December 2013, which is just a little more than one year ago. Not 2 years like you claim.

I like Song Joong Ki and LOVE Song Hye Kyo (mainly because I think she's gorgeous and she's my girl crush so sorry, I'm shallow like that at times). However, I'm not so sure about this pairing. I just can't see them together at this point. Can't they cast an older actor? I want to see SHK in another drama so I'd rather they switch actors than switch the female lead. Gong Yoo has a similar look to Song Joong Ki but an older version so I think he'd be good but, then again, I want him to be in that ITWY remake with Ha Ji Won so...

I'm also not thrilled about the writer being the one who did Heirs but I liked A Gentleman's Dignity and thought Secret Garden was not bad so I'm willing to overlook that misstep. If they do end up casting both Songs, I'm hoping they'll surprise us and make it work somehow. I'm willing to give this drama a shot for the actors alone. :P

Although, if they sign on Shin Min Ah or even Han Hyo Joo in place of SHK, I would still watch it, too. I think they could have chemistry with SJK. Everyone wants a Moon Chae Won and Song Joong Ki reunion but somehow I haven't really warmed up to her. To be fair, the only drama of hers I really watched was Nice Guy and I wasn't a fan of her character there. I watched Good Doctor for a bit and she was fine there but dropped the show before I could become a fan. I still have to watch Princess Man one day, though.
