Song Ji-hyo courted to join Byun Yo-han’s Ex-Girlfriend Club

Hm, the last time Song Ji-hyo played someone’s ex, it wasn’t as much fun as I had hoped — Emergency Couple did have its outlandish moments, but it wasn’t exactly what I’d call a healthy relationship that needed a second go. Perhaps she’ll have better luck with Byun Yo-han (Misaeng) in tvN’s new Friday-Saturday romantic comedy Ex-Girlfriend Club. She’s been offered a leading role, and both she and Byun Yo-han are both considering for now.

This is will be the first tvN drama from PD Kwon Seok-jang of Miss Korea, Golden Time, and Pasta, which does make me anticipate the show. Writing is Lee Jin-mae of My Country Calls and I Am Sam. The romantic comedy will be about a man who can’t stop stressing about his current girlfriend’s past lovers, and a woman who’s just as preoccupied with her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend.

I guess that doesn’t necessarily make Byun Yo-han and Song Ji-hyo exes, since we’re not told how they’re linked romantically. Byun Yo-han is up to play a social butterfly, a webtoon artist and philanthropist who makes friends wherever he goes. It drives his girlfriend nuts, but he’s a bit hapless, if well-meaning.

But this, I think he’ll probably get multiple kicks to the nuts for: He creates a webtoon about all of his past girlfriends (hence the ex-girlfriend club). Does he have a death wish or something? That webtoon then ends up being shopped around to be made into a movie, and Song Ji-hyo plays a movie producer that’s involved in the adaptation. I’m not sure about the pairing, but maybe it’s because I can only ever picture Byun Yo-han loving Jang Geu-rae?

Ex-Girlfriend Club follows Superdaddy Yeol (after Heart to Heart) in May.

ㅋㅋㅋㅋ that description is hilarious.

Kinda reminds me of Gu Dae-young in Let's Eat being nice to everyone. Lots of room for misunderstandings!

I need to finish Misaeng soon so I can join in the Byun Yo-han love :D

Another romcom for jihyo. I hope she accepts it. Emergency Couple was good but in real life I don't think it was a good idea to get back at your ex who emotionally abused you to the point you were going bald. I do love Song Jihyo in a romcom more than sageuk.

I actually really like this pairing. Very unexpected, yes, but I think they could make a cool couple. And I like this premise much more than Emergency Couple and that includes the character descriptions so far.

Keeping my fingers-crossed that Song Ji Hyo does this drama, sounds hilarious and I need to see her do another rom-com drama. Still can't believe it had taken her so long to do one and although Emergency Couple left a lot to be desired I enjoyed seeing her in that genre, it fit her really well.

I agree! And it's been ages since I last saw Ji Hyo in a drama! (it really feels that long for me) I've been really waiting for her new project. And.. Yeah, She's pretty good in romcoms that's also why I'm looking forward to this, and Byun Yo Han, I don't think I've seen enough of him in Misaeng cause man, I honestly think this guy has potential. Oh well~ Jebal! Ji Hyo unnie please say yes to this drama~

Song Ji-hyo's character was the best thing on Emergency Couple. Sadly the drama went a bit too dramatic for its romcom tag, but Ji-hyo was great throughout. I'm hoping she'd take this, alongside Byun Yo-han. I think those two can pull off comedy real well.

And if it's directed by the man who made Pasta, probably one of the most theoretically boring yet surprisingly super pleasant drama in the universe, then I'm on board.

Seems like an interesting pairing.
Love Byun Yo-han in Misaeng.
I actually was hoping he could work with Kang Sora again.
Love them both in Misaeng.

Sounds like a concept that will require some complex romcom writing. Song Ji Hyo's acting was better than the writing on Emergency Couple or Mandate of Heaven, so she should do well in this story.

All sounds good so far - Byun Yo Han, Song Ji Hyo, Miss Korea, Pasta!

I hope BYH gets a good wardrobe again, I loved his outlandish fashions in Misaeng (is it too much to hope for the same hairstyle? It's so wrong, but on him it was adorable).

(on a side note: can't believe they're already talking about what's next after Superdaddy Yeol! I haven't seen the first episode yet!)

I seriously need Song Ji Hyo in a good project to wash out the painful memories of the mess that was Emergency Couple. Still can't process how such a good actress could be in such a bad drama haha Anyway, hoping it works out!

Emergency Couple won the award for best drama? That's frickin' hilarious!

CSL is better by far, and I think that's just because of the misunderstanding that happened when they were a married couple. It's definitely a marriage worth saving after all.

EC on the other hand is more of the teenage-hate kind of marriage, that has a foundation not too solid. And has enough reasons for couple swapping. Imagine, I watched it for CJH. But! I personally rooted for (someone new to me) second male lead Dr. Gook (Lee Pil-mo) and became vastly devastated with it. Sigh. NOT. worth. saving.

CSL is better by far I reiterate. ;-)

I actually went to the DF award show and I was very confused by Emergency Couple winning that award. Granted, I didn't actually watch it, but I wasn't hearing good things about it. There are other shows that I felt better deserved the award, but it is voted on my DF viewers so...

Please never judge anything by Dramafever standards. case in point Blood is currently one of their most view dramas ( eeek!!).
Also Cunning Single was the better drama. Just by the fact that the couple was never vicious to each other. Yes he had a low point when he takes her to see their "dream house", but he feels so guilty about it. You never quite hate him for it. Then there's EC.. Where he verbally abuses her to the point where she has a nervous break down, he treats her like crap for 3/4's of the drama & we are expected to cheer for them as a couple? Nope that was one unhealthy relationship.

Seconded on EC's flaws. The first few episodes are full of inexcusable psychological violence and abuse, nothing romcom about them. Throw in wrist grabs and forced kisses as part of the "romantic" revival, and you've got a chauvinist's wet dream.

It's not bad at all. I wouldn't classify it as much of a comedy, though there are some nice laughs you get out of it. I enjoyed Cunning Single Lady as well (a lot more!) so overall you have to just give things a shot and take everyone's opinion with a grain of salt (including mine, lol). See what you think!

If you ever watched Eugene's "100 Year Inheritance", EC is just like that. Frustrating, torment after torment, and chemistry developments aren't even that good. I have a black list of drama and writers that I hate and will avoid future projects of those writers: Both "100 Year Inheritance" and "Emergency Couple" as well as "Hyde, Jekyll, and Me" fall under that black list of mine. I would not recommend any of those dramas at all. Horrible script and a waste of talents.

Emergency Couple had both comedy and melodrama that for the most part was balanced. Overall it was a fun watch and the positives (actors/characters) outweigh the negatives (weakness in some of the writing) for this drama.

In my opinion, the main highlights from EC are:

Baby Gook — You just have to meet him. :)

Oh Chang-Min — Is not perfect. Far from it but Choi Jin-Hyuk has an undeniable screen presence that makes you want to tune in and see his character’s journey from beginning to end. Choi Jin-Hyuk was able to portray and balance out the character Oh Chang-Min with varying degrees of emotion (affable, confidence, lovesick, yearning, sullenness, jealousy, grief, comedic, brazen, passionate, domineering, motivated, competitive, etc.)

Kook Cheon-Soo — Lee Pil-Mo's character definitely stood out as a nice contrast to the rest of the main characters.

Sim Ji-Hye — A second lead that was never jealous or nasty to leading lady Oh Jin-Hee.

I didn't see Emergency Couple but I'd say that DF isn't much to base anything off of. I voted in them and I was seriously stumped by their options. Like seriously none of the ones that were my favorites last year were even options. And that's even taking into account that they're naturally only going to nominated shows that they air on the website.

I am a little bit worried for her health though.
She is going to be so exhausted filming for that drama AND Running Man.
Of course, I am happy that despite the rise of popularity of her acting career, she isn't quitting the show but yeah', it must be really exhausting. She is truly a hardworker.
The same goes for the other members though. All of them (except our Big Nose Hyung, haha)have busy schedules after RM so yeap', they are freakin' awesome for trying their best <3

Whatever, it sounds fun so I will wait for more updates to see if I am going to check it out or not :)
It's pretty awesome how a hit drama can do so much good for your career though.

I think cable dramas are less tiring Emergency Couple just happens to be an exception since they didn't have enough time to prepare. Choi Jin Hyuk always mention how hard their schedule was and he wasn't doing RM imagine how tiring it must have been for jihyo. All Choi Jin Hyuk has to say after filming EC was that it was really tiring they had to film for long hours they even sleep and wash on set. I haven't heard him say the same about on his recent drama.

ohhh now that we see more about his character, I do think he has a death wish but well, i wanted to kill Seok Yoolie too for being so nosy and ended up looving him to death... depending on the number of exes, he might go broke asking for their permi$$ion to be in the movie... copyrights aint cheap lol

Ji hyo was like sleeping everywhere in RM while filming emergency couple so I hope she gets to balance things out and stay healthy if she accepts this role... i hope she does! and hopes this can lead to Yo han appearing in RM *winks*

I really hope she accepts this drama. Sounds fun and rom-com totally suits her. EC, for all its plot problems and bad writing, had its moments of goodness. Maybe its the natural use of medical terms that you know the actors put lots of effort, or the general fun the actors are having in the show, but it appealed to the public. Though the plot really sucked. At least, it showed some serious potential for Jihyo. She's hilarious and I can't wait to see another great side of her.

As a jihyo fan I do want her to accept this drama its been a while since she appeared on a drama/movie and plot is promising and I think the writer is also good. Plus its on tvn a cable station she won't be live filming episodes and have more time to rest.
