Angry Mom’s breakout rookie Ji-soo joins youth movie

Agh, I love this kid. So, so much. I know that rookie actor Ji-soo’s charm is ninety-five percent Go Bok-dong, his tough-on-the-outside, gooey-cookie-on-the-inside high school badass character in MBC’s Wednesday-Thursday drama Angry Mom. My brain knows this, but the drama is still current and I haven’t really worked out the separation yet. But really, a huge part of Bok-dong’s awesomeness is that Ji-soo plays him with raw vulnerability and squeezy puppy cuteness (masked under a lot of gruffness, of course). The fact that it’s his drama debut just makes it shocking.

But already he’s being talked about as the breakout rookie who came out of nowhere and is making waves in Angry Mom, and he’s in talks to take on his next project, the youth movie Glory Day (his film debut was in last year’s critically acclaimed Han Gong-ju, though it was a tiny role).

The movie is about a foursome of 19-year-old friends whose fates change over the course of one night. It’s described as a coming-of-age movie and co-stars three other rookie actors: EXO’s Suho, Ryu Joon-yeol (Social Phobia), and Kim Hee-chan (who will be making his drama debut in Producer as Gong Hyo-jin’s little brother). Director Choi Jung-yeol, who won short film awards at both the Blue Dragon and Grand Bell Awards, will be at the helm.

I’m not at all surprised that Ji-soo was noticed so quickly, because he plays one of the best characters in Angry Mom and makes every single look and line delivery count. He’s 22 and has some theater experience under his belt, which might explain why he’s good out of the gate. I was happy just to see his role grow in the drama, but it’s exciting that his career is already going places before the show even ends. Just don’t forget that there’s an endless array of broody bad boy drama heroes in your future, mkay?

Glory Day begins filming in May.

Yup!!!!

I just adore him in Angry Mom.

His puppy love for Kim Hee Sun is cute beyond words...

I remember that scene in episode 10 I think when he was smelling her hair and dreaming while she was completely busy hiding from her husband...

Then he went to preach it to the husband : "Ajusshi...shame on you for preying on high schoolers... if I see you here again looking for her, I'll punch your face" haha..that was priceless!!

He's too good!!! He's the sole reason I'm watching the show.

it's rather sweet to witness the rise of a new talent after playing a wounded and vulnerable schoolboy, it feels like just the other day we were watching it happen for Lee Jong-seok and Kim Woo-bin :D

As we know from painful experience with other idols and idol groups, acting talent is unfortunately not transferable from somewhat talented member to woefully untalented member. Examples are not necessary, there are too many of them.

Suho has an acting degree from K-ARTS, the same uni that has been steadily producing talents such as Lee Jee-hoon, Lee Joon, Kim Go-eun, Im Ji-yeon, Jung So-min.....(the list goes on). So, maybe we can expect him to be good, too?

I've never heard of Kim Hee-chan, but Ryu Jun-yeol is another name from korean indie film scene that seems to come to light after Socialphobia. And Ji-soo, well, we all discover him through Angry Mom (and is he a student of K-ARTS, too? Or does he have theater experience under his belt?).

If anything, I'm always excited to watch new talents emerge, bringing such a refreshing color in Korean drama/film scene. I hope the movie's good and the actors deliver.

Suho does not have a degree from K-ARTS as he never finished and has dropped out at this point. He did attend for some time though.

He hasn't graduated yet though, I don't think he will anytime soon bc he's too busy. He's probably put his studies on hold for now.

He was in Prime Minister and I in a short cameo and I thought he was really awkward and unnatural. But who knows, Chungmuro and a good director might change him.

But yes, we do need new blood. Excited to see how they'll do.

I felt like Lee Tae-Hwan was in this same position after "High School King of Savvy", and even though he was great in "Pride and Prejudice" (and kind of a Bok-dong type of character), it doesn't seem to have launched him into anything big.

I'm being cautiously optimistic.

Lee Tae-Hwan was great in both HSKF and P&P - but I never quite saw him as lead material. More like second lead nice guy, with the potential to step it up as main lead. Ji-Soo however, how do I put it, his acting shows a lot more umph, and his features are a lot sharper which makes him a lot more memorable? Dunno if that even makes any sense, but that's how I see it lol.

I seeee! On a second look they don't look that much alike. Lee tae-hwan is barely 20, he's got plenty of time to show his acting chops. He must be busy with his singing career too.
Thanks Beanies. <3

Lee Tae Han is that excessively tall sidekick. Acting idol group 5urprise's maknae (i think). Good in P&P but i never finish it.

Hipster cop is another familiar face.. Choi Tae Joon, very memorable as the (cool?) boxing sunbae in Adolescene Medley but but with that curly flop i can hardly place him and have to consult dramawiki

And yayyyy for Ji Soo! ♡♡♡♡♡

i'm 23 so i'm a noona to this baby, better keep my thoughts in check LOL. at least I met him as a wounded yet caring and sweet baby instead of a charismatic first lead of a drama. had the latter happened, there's no way i would not see him as a man!!!!!!
of course much of our love for him is due to Bok Dong but Ji Soo is credited for the great portrayal and the looks. I hope the best for him, and does this mean that he actually started as an actor?? or is he a part of an idol group???

*sigh* now I feel old... why does the 93-94ers keep getting more good looking and cooler?? I like them oppas not dongsaengs!!

I think it takes so much for an actor to pull off so much emotion and passion in a character. So for someone so new to acting, it's no surprise that JiSoo has offers already. He's amazing as Bok-Dong and I'm glad he has more coming. I wish him luck and can't wait to see more of him know future.

Interesting that he did theatre which does explain howhe could be that captivating with so little on screen experience.

There have been a lot of tough but sweet characters in recent years, but this kid is the BEST of the best of the BEST of them.

I know some folks have been a bit mad about his character getting that popular on Angry Mom and say it is cheap tricks from producers to give him more screen time because the feedback is positive, but not because of the story itself, but I disagree. You never know which character works on screen and appeals to people, and which outshines other characters. and if a character just IS that much more interesting and conflicted, they are worth developing further. what´s wrong with that. not every character becomes popular just because they are intended and a surprising one may shine unexpectedly. sometimes characters "write" themselves and you cannot help it but to let them run free for as long as they have steam.

no long-term conclusions about this puppy though, it is just one role after all. But I hope he´ll get more interesting characters who are fun to follow.
