Answer Me 1988 brings 1994’s Samcheonpo back to the fold

Ha, this’ll be a fun twist on a callback — Kim Sung-kyun, who played Answer Me 1994’s sweet and hapless country bumpkin Samcheonpo, will be joining Answer Me 1988 as one of the parents. It’s bizarre if you think about the fact that he played a college freshman in 1994 (he’s 35 in real life, which was its own source of jokes while he was Samcheonpo), and will be following that up with a role as a dad but earlier in the timeline. Thank goodness the Answer Me universes don’t exist on the same space-time continuum (except when they do!).

My brain can barely handle the perpetual reality-bending parent clone couple Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa, who are the only confirmed actors for the drama thus far. They’ll be reprising their roles as Mom and Dad, and in this drama we’ll have three neighbor families at the center of the story.

The very funny character actress Ra Mi-ran (Iron Man, Witch’s Romance) is also considering a role as one of the neighbors, and Girl’s Day’s Hyeri (Hyde, Jekyll, Me) has been offered a starring role.

I actually want Kim Sung-kyun to play Samcheonpo again, even though that would confuse the hell out of me and mess with all of the 1994 canon. But that character was so ridiculously funny, and we already know that PD Shin Won-ho and writer Lee Woo-jung love to mess with canon for the sake of a meta joke.

Maybe while we’re at it, we can bring Dohee back and they can be Back to the Future Yoon-jin and Samcheonpo, living out their bickering-ever-after as parents in the past. It might short-circuit my brain, but it might be worth the pain.

Answer Me 1988 is being planned for the Friday-Saturday slot in late September or early October on tvN.

I've heard that other members of idol groups might also be considering. Is there any confirmed news on this?

Is she really that bad? I've never seen her in anything before, so I don't know much about her.

D.O of EXO? The one who did It's Okay, It's Love? I like his group, but I've not really seen him in an actual drama before, so I can't completely judge his acting skills, but other critics have said he's good. Anyone here know anything on his skills in acting?

As for Eunji, YES PLEASE. What do I have to do to make this happen? She was pure gold in Reply 1997. Her character was awesome already, and she just breathed so much life into it.

I'm looking forward to a new Answer Me drama but I'm not so sure about recurring actors.

Having the same actors playing Mom and Dad in both AM97 and AM94 was already a big stretch.

I wish they'd make the 3rd installment with a completely new cast.

Well till I got to the part where he's gonna be a dad I was thinking it'd be funny to make him a bad-ass mofo like his movies, which screwed with me since I'd known him as Samcheonpo first. Or maybe it would be funnier if he was a scary mobster ala Nameless Gangsters at the job but Samcheonpo-esque with his family? Eh, either way I like all the mind-bendiness. Bring it on!

Yay! Ra Mi-ran!

Kim Sung-kyun and Ra Mi-ran are awesome! Plus, Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa are amazing. I'm really liking the adult portion of the neighborhood so far.
I'm interested in how the team will create this new installment, but the bloated time and meandering camera movements need to be cut a bit.

Answer Me 1997 will forever be my number 1 drama. 1994 was not as good, but it still had so much about it that I loved despite its flaws. This year already has so many dramas coming up that I an really excited for, but I anticipate nothing like I do this one. I am so so so ready to fall in love all over again! Also, at this point if they ever make an Answer Me without Sung Dong Il and Lee Il Hwa, I would be seriously displeased. We MUST have Mom and Dad!

The parents in Kill Me, Heal Me really worked for me, too, with their cute and uppity rapport. Wouldn't mind it if they were asked to work on a project like this one!

I skipped AM 1994 but loved AM 1997. Maybe I should give it a try? I like me some pain. And Yoo Yeon Seok. Heh. Looking forward to this one.

1997 has the more concise story (but the whole crazy fan-girl thing got tiresome and the love-triangle was not really believable and a bit ewww), but 1994 has the better characters (which makes up for the dragging out of the whole "hubby mystery" which really wasn't that much of a mystery if one reads the tea leaves).

Personally, refer 1994 over 1997, b/c of the superior characters (also had a bit more humor) and could relate to the scenario better (just way too much of the crazy fangirl thing in 1997).

Same opinion here regarding 1994 versus 1997. I find myself loving 1994 more because I feel a stronger familial bond amongst the characters and even the cast.

There was already an actor playing Samcheonpo's dad in AM 1994, if you remember that episode in AM 1994 where the whole gang visited his hometown.

All was well until I read Hyeri is being casted for a lead? Um. What the hell. Is this serious?! T_T

If she does get casted, I hope they make a petition to remove her. Argh, a bad luck for Reply series

Whenever I see this actor in anything, I remember how they told him he looks like a murderer, still funny.

I actually don't mind recuring actors, because they are always brought back in a clever way. I really like the answer me franchise, so I'm really anticipating this new season. In the Answer Me team I trust !!!

If they want an idol i hope they will cast as supporting not a lead. Eunji was an exception and she fit the character a lot.

I would rather see new idols trying out like WINNER Seung Yoon (High Kick 3) or even EXID Hani.

i honestly, i don't get why you're so lukewarm about the parents reprising their role. i think it's an awesome tag along and i think it bring familiarity to the story (esp since i love their chemistry as parents) Their personalities are different in subtle ways btwn each series too. It's like American Horror Story where they use a lot of the same actors in each series even though the stories don't really connect. It's a nice call back
