Kolorful Palette: Green light [Girl Who Sees Smells]

I always love it when a new drama comes out. I’m inevitably filled with hope and optimism, which is especially welcome when I feel like Dramaland is in a bit of a slump. The premise of Girl Who Sees Smells is pretty peculiar, but I enjoyed the opening episodes far more than I ever expected and the story somehow comes across as more normal than it has any right to.

One of my biggest apprehensions about this drama was that Shin Se-kyung’s character, Cho-rim, would be obnoxious in her pursuit of comedy and drive me batty with constant failed attempts at humor. I needn’t have worried since Cho-rim is bubbly and sweet in the best way possible, and she has fantastic chemistry with Moo-gak (Yoochun) right off the bat. She’s got spirit, and I admire the way she brazenly investigates the men’s locker room and even assists Moo-gak in his arrest.

That chemistry was a big reason I chose this scene to draw (for those who didn’t watch the episode it’s Moo-gak helping Cho-rim with her Green Light comedy skit in exchange for helping with a missing persons case). Moo-gak is a bit of an overly serious curmudgeon a lot of the time, but he’s spirited too when he wants to be, and I think my jaw may have quite literally dropped opened when he threw himself into his comedy role with such gusto. He was more enthusiastic than Cho-rim! I actually can’t help but feel that they should switch jobs. He’s not the most impressive cop around (although he’s great at causing property damage) and Cho-rim is hardly the next Tina Fey. It would actually be kind of cute and romantic if they did end up switching jobs in the long run.

I decided to resist the charms of conte this week and went back to my old staple, digital watercolor, in hopes of creating a softer look. In retrospect I think a different medium could have worked better for me (especially with the color range I chose). Ah well, live and learn! I always find more comedic shots like this the hardest to approach, but they’re also difficult to resist since they offer up something fun and different to draw. I’m sure I’ll be drawing these two again though, so I’ll have ample opportunity to perfect them.

This is one of those jack-of-all-trades dramas that includes a mix of comedy, romance, drama, and mystery. The mixing of genres always has the potential for disaster, or can just frustrate us with incessant changes in tone, but Girl Who Sees Smells manages to smoothly transition from scene to scene and I find myself enjoying every type of moment. This is also a show that cuts to the chase, and I love that. The back story was kept short and sweet, and our main couple was teamed up almost immediately. Even their first big case involves the big bad murderer from their pasts, and that alone has me incredibly intrigued (it’s an especially interesting case with all the barcodes and strange choice of victims).

In a nutshell, I can’t wait to see more of everything. Who’s with me?

I thought the same too! Cho Rim has better detective instincts and deductive skills than Moo Gak. It helps also that she can get the source material firsthand to apply her reasoning on.

And Yoochun/Mug's potential as a comedian....well, just watch that skit!

I want them to switch jobs too!!!

I feel the same way about new shows, all excitement and optimism. I am trying not to be too excited about this one though because time and again I have learned that dramas in their first week can start off with such a fresh and fun vibe, and then they deteriorate as the show goes =/ I enjoyed the first two episodes a lot, but I am reserving judgment until the next couple of weeks have passed and the show is still good.

Love the chemistry between Yoochun and Shin Se Kyung, though. I think if they can keep it up, they could carry the show even if the writing starts to slip. This was a great scene to draw!

Thank you ever so much for all your gorgeous works, Fanderay. I was hoping you would actually showcase "the scents" that Cho Rim sees. The CG effects in the drama are so pretty to the eyes and I just thought maybe you would do them justice too. :)

I love this drama, so far. Really enjoying both leads' performances. Here's to hoping they keep this pace of equal mix of fun and tad bit of suspense as we go through 14 more episodes.

I really liked the art. The colors too and their faces and the dreamlike quality. Is it becsuse of the water colors, I wonder? as about the floating pretty colorflakes... hehe - I think we're too greedy.

He has a potential as comedian, but I really like how he investigates. Asks the right questions, he is driven and can reconstruct scenes. She is more his dog partner. A cute, smart one, compassionate and helpful. Somehow reminds me of the partnership in IHYV only with reversed genders.

I'm with you! I want more of everything and am eagerly anticipating the next episode.

Their switching jobs is a great idea. I love that you chose the Green Light skit because seeing YC so animated and funny in it was a delightful surprise, making this scene stand out in my mind.

Fingers crossed that this drama continues to be both a fun and suspenseful ride. Thanks, Fanderay!

Really enjoying this show also. The casting is spot on and the switch from dark to light in tone has been surprisingly good. Looking forward to more artistic and verbal insight. Thanks so much.

For all DB5K/ JYJ fans yoochun is a well-known troll, so it wasn't exactly a surprise but it was still entertaining all the same, seeing his chunface making a comeback ^^

I think Mugak is not bad as an investigator, considering how late he started and how so little authority he has. it is just OCR that has the ability that sees smells that leads to some clues that even an excellent detective will take time to figure out.

Hmm, I wasn't really interested in this drama, but I had forgotten it had some mystery/crime-solving elements to it. Didn't know how well the comedy would be done either.

I'm glad I read this article. The show sounds promising.

Wonderful drawing, I love their expressions!!

I was surprised to find myself enjoying this show as much as I did considering the premise, but like you said, everything just worked seamlessly. So excited to see where the story and characters go from here!!

Pretty drawing Fanderay. The Green Light skit is hilarious. Yuchun is so serious at first before he turns into a comedian and back to his serious self after lol. I can't wait for more of this drama, too. ^^

Hi @Giegie and Fanderay.
Thanks Fanderay for another great piece of art on the main characters. I'm amazed at how their faces look so alive. I can feel the funny coming off them in your drawing, as they did their skit.

@Giegie! I'm glad to see you here. I am with you on the hilarity which I found surprising in a show that includes murder in its first scene!!! We know there's lots more angst coming up, so I guess we'd better enjoy the funny while we can!

And as to what Fanderay says ... "I enjoyed the opening episodes far more than I ever expected and the story somehow comes across as more normal than it has any right to." Yes, absolutely. It was strangely normal, in spite of the weirdness of our 2 characters. I was discussing a sense of dissonance in Angry Mom, ... here, there is reverse dissonance ie that something weird seems so normal, that it makes me feel strange!!!

Anyway, I'm enjoying it a lot more than I expected too and am glad to know that there'll probably be more than one piece of art based on this show. :)

Yes, I'm with you :) I too was taken by surprise by Moo-gak's lively performance in this scene and I loved it! To think that this short comedy skit has been his only medium to humour since his sister died is pretty heart-breaking. Cho-rim will surely bring him back to the emotional living and I can't wait to see him be genuinely happy and crack a real joke one day.

Thank you so much Fanderay for your amazing artwork. They really are capturing pieces, they are hard to look away from because they look and feel so real.
