News bites: May 2, 2015

Yunho, Kim Ga-eun

  • The upcoming web-to-cable drama I’ll Take a Serving of You has cast Yunho of DBSK (Records of a Night Watchman) and Kim Ga-eun (Sincere Min Deul-le, Age of Feeling) as the leads. Based on the same-named web novel, the plot revolves around a romance that develops at a small shop that makes homemade lunchboxes. Yunho will play a chef, while Kim will play an ad agency employee. Cameras start rolling in May, and all 16 episodes will air online first, then air on the cable channel SBS Plus in mid-June. [Star News]
  • Jang Hyuk has started work on the Chinese movie Inside or Outside, in which he’ll play the CFO of an IT company and a successful businessman. Recently married, when his wife gives birth to a daughter, he begins to doubt the child is his. He searches to uncover the truth, and he’ll discover more than he bargained for: the identity of a baddie who’s got it out for him. The white-collar crime thriller also stars Simon Yam and Wallace Huo, and the actors reported on set a little over a week ago. [Joongang]

  • Park Hyo-joo, Park Min-woo

  • Park Hyo-joo (Secret Door) has joined the musical film Gorae Gorae Ride the Carriage, which is repeatedly being called a Korean version of Begin Again. She’s the lone female among the cast, and she’ll play a PD who records the story of four young men who are brought together by their passion for music. [Osen]
  • The premise of this web drama sounds cute: Park Min-woo (Modern Farmer) is a guy who’s a date-for-hire, while relative newcomer Kim Ji-an is a girl who is paid to handwrite love letters for others. Park’s character is earnest about his work but paradoxically feels lonely — for two people who are in the business of romance, they aren’t very successful at it in their personal lives. The story is about those who hesitate because they’re scared of falling in love, and the title is Romance Blues, a play on the “wedding blues” some people sink into prior to marriage. The drama will be released in the latter half of the year, but the schedule and format are to be determined. [TV Report]

  • Joo-won

  • Joo-won Instagrammed a shot of himself on the set of his latest film, That’s Him. He looks beat up, but still hot! He plays a guy chasing his little sister’s murderer, and is said to have put on some pounds for the role. Filming will ramp up at the end of May and the movie is expected to be released later this year. [Osen]
  • The PD of Misaeng, Kim Won-seok, is prepping a new show and said at a recent conference: “[When I was an assistant director] I wondered why people would keep telling the same story. I will make an effort to tell a story that hasn’t been told before. I want to make another drama that viewers can relate to.” [Joongang]

  • Baekhyun, Joo Da-young

  • Exo’s Baekhyun has been offered a supporting role in Iron Club, the film based on an eponymous webtoon (what isn’t these days?) and courting Yeo Jin-gu to star in a dual role as twin brothers. When the elder twin, a model student, is blamed for school violence and becomes a scapegoat, the younger twin, a bit of a troublemaker to begin with, will get revenge by taking down the school gang. Baekhyun would play a guy with kickass fighting skills, but who is trying to distance himself from the school bullies. [Star News]
  • Former child actress Joo Da-young (Age of Feeling) has been cast as the younger version of Kim Sun-ah in Masked Prosecutor. The character is the driving force behind Joo Sang-wook becoming an attorney, and although she appears cold and arrogant on the outside, she’s got a reason: secret inner pain (yunno, that common dramaland affliction). About a prosecutor, Joo, who’s fed up with the ineffectiveness of the courts and who decides to take the law into his own hands, the show airs after the conclusion of Unkind Women on Wednesdays and Thursdays on KBS. [TV Report]
  • Model/actress Byun Jung-soo Instagrammed photos of Ji Sung and Lee Bo-young’s surprise baby shower, which took place on April 27 — Lee is positively glowing (and the tiniest expectant woman ever) and Ji Sung looks like a proud father already. Congratulations to the happy couple! Guests included actresses Bae Jong-ok, Jang Hee-jin and other close friends. [E Daily]

Kim ga eun is a nugu actress. She always got very small roles in all her other dramas. She was not even the 2nd lead. Surprised she got the main lead for the first time.

Even tho she played super small roles, I never liked Kim Ga-eun in any of her dramas. She has no screen presence, no charisma, nothing good about her acting and she pales in comparison to the other cast members. No wonder she constantly landed very minor roles for a long while.

Well then, she will be a good match for Junho. I always like it when they pair idols and other hopeless non-talents in one drama, it makes it easy to avoid.
Despite the breathless reports of Junho actually getting better in his latest, I still find him painful to watch and think fangirls must be the only reason why he is still being shoved down our throats.

@skelly

It's so funny how you think fan girls are "the only reason he's still being shoved down our throat"....International netizens like you can criticize his acting all you want but at least in Japan, Yunho got widespread public recognition for improved decent acting in Night Watchman. Some NON-fans in Korea are warming up to Yunho and supporting him too.

skelly,

LMAO at your harsh comment and choice of words. You can't even spell his name right LOL. You cannot call him hopeless non-talent.
He's not a great actor, but he can sing live with MR Removed. Yunho is one of the greatest dancers in K-pop. He even wrote lyrics and composed music for his solo songs.
Last time I checked, the Korean netizens said his acting was DECENT in his previous drama, NOT bad or painful to watch at all. I can read Korean Hangul so I know exactly what they said about him.

Not even a fan, but from my un-biased opinion I srsly think Yunho's acting is okay & I kinda like his portrayal of the bodyguard swordsman in Night Watchman's journal. i respect him as singer and dancer, but I hope he keeps improving his acting.

Because we all know Dramaland casts by talent first, as evident by a number of people, including the male lead here. Perhaps if bad actresses didn't keep getting roles, we'd see more promising rookies given opportunities.

She was just fine in 'I Hear Your Voice' and she has a heck of a lot more charisma, skill and especially potential than many "stars" nowadays.

@orion,

lol kim ga eun is nothing unique. she's NOT a good actress.
i'd say mediocre at most. no wonder why she's not popular, got no star power, and a really tiny fanbase.

I LIKE KIM GA-EUN. SHE IS ME.

In Age of Feeling, she kept trying but failing to get Mo Il-hwa to notice her. Heh~

PS She's also okay in IHYV. She doesn't suck. Which is what (I heard) people are saying about Yunho after Night Watchman. So I don't get the fighting in this thread.

mary,

Exactly! That's what I heard too. Many people saying Yunho did okay after Night Watchman. Tbh, this is the first drama i've seen him in. from my un-biased viewpoint as a non-fan, i think he was watchable and decent.
as you can see the news above, Yunho got offered the main leading role for SBS rom-com web drama "I Order You"...i might watch it.

He'll enlist around August, so there's still enough time to shoot 16 episodes, and maybe squeeze in a concert or two, before he has to leave.

Pregnant ladies may suffer from bloating and also hormone changes that cause acne. Lee Bo-young probably can't wear much makeup.

she does? I thought she looked lovely, maybe lovelier since she was so thin as most K actresses are.

She just looks healthy and makeup-free.

She looked gaunt with eyeliner and edgy(?) makeup in GG14D, but the last I saw her in was IHYV where she had lighter makeup, so her baby shower pics didn't look largely different to me. :)

LBY doesn't look much like she did in IHYV, but she isn't playing a character here! That huge smile on her face is adorable--and a long way from a cynical defense attorney.

I think if any K-drama characters were as happy as LBY and JS look here, the drama would have to end 30 minutes into the first episode due to lack of conflict.
