Yeo Jin-gu sound bites from the Orange Marmalade press conference

High school fantasy drama Orange Marmalade held its production press conference in Seoul on May 12 — the show kicks off this Friday on KBS — so the cast was on hand to promote the vampire-girl-falls-in-love-with-human-boy melo-romance.

The event also yielded a number of gems from its question-and-answer session, mostly from a single source, series star Yeo Jin-gu. Most of the comments by the rest of the cast (such as AOA’s Seolhyun and CN Blue’s Jonghyun) were pretty standard stuff (mostly canned comments about ideal types, the plot, and working with each other), but Yeo made up for it by being chatty and all over the place. And thanks to him, we have a collection of random, sweet, and hilarious comments to enjoy. (He’s adorable. I just want to squish him.)

Comments made by Yeo Jin-gu, in no particular order:

“I really cherish the title of oppa. I don’t have a desire to gain a different title, I just want to be oppa.”

“I think age is an unconstrained thing. If someone were to feel that I was like an oppa to them even though they’re older, it doesn’t matter if they call me oppa. It’s something I’m grateful for. To be an oppa means that I feel more mature, so particularly if noonas call me ‘Jin-gu oppa,’ it makes me feel really great.”

“In middle school, I didn’t study much but I could manage with cramming a few weeks before an exam, but now that doesn’t work anymore. But I look at it positively… When you want to get back to a high place, you have to step on the ground at the bottom and jump. Right now I’m heading down toward the ground.”

“As ever, I do worry about university admission. To be really honest, I used to be mistaken thinking that anybody could get into university if they put in a little effort. But more and more, as reality approaches, now it feels like an extremely high wall. I think, They’re impressive people, university hyungs and noonas, they must have put in a ton of effort. I think they’ve put in a lot of time.”

“As of now, I do want to attend university. I don’t know what will happen… Personally, I think it would be good to study something new, but I’d like to continue acting. I think it’ll be good to learn things that could help in acting.”

“When I turn twenty, whether in acting or just as a person, a lot of things open up for you and more responsibilities come, too. It makes my heart flutter and pound in excitement.”

“To be honest, it’s really difficult delivering embarrassingly cheesy lines in the drama. I can’t say things like that myself.”

“In order to make the melo line believable, those [cheesy lines] have to be done well, so I practiced a lot to feel more natural saying them.”

“I didn’t work out to build up my back muscles on purpose — I’m normally kind of muscular. It wasn’t that I thought I have to work out to show off in my shower scene, it’s just that the scene had me washing my hair and I just happened to raise my arms. The scene must have come out well since the camera was good.”

“I haven’t had my first love yet… I’ve liked someone before, but it was just to the level of feeling interested. So I haven’t ever felt overpowered or controlled by feelings of love.”

“So far, the feeling of being in love is unfamiliar. Since I’m lacking experience, I can appear a little more innocent.”

I remember in one interview he had with Kim So-hyun while filming "Missing You," So-hyun was saying how much Yeo Jin-goo is insisting the she call him "oppa." This is the reason, huh? Haha

It's a good thing DB covered this since I am getting quite annoyed at how the Facebook page for this that I'm following just posts pictures of Jonghyun (CNBlue). I don't mind that they're fans of the guy and that they post about him, but it's kinda off-putting since Yeo Jin-goo is the main lead on this one and they rarely post about him. They even rarely post about Seolhyun (except when she's in a scene with Jonghyun) /sigh

Anyway, I saw the 7-minute trailer and it's quite interesting. I got the impressions that the show was going too dark and melo, but surprisingly, there's enough comedy especially coming from Yeo Jin-goo. I wish this does well! :-)

I tell you what, whoever does the wardrobe for Secret Love Affair and Heard It Through The Grapevine, (I'm assuming it 's the same crew), has impeccable fashion taste.

Kim Hee-Ae's wardrobe was killer. Pretty much the same for the ladies in Grapevine. I haven't seen a single clunker on any of the female cast.

I agree. Even the ladies in Yeon-hee's circle of friends (Grapevine) dress so beautifully.

Haven't watched grapevine, but agreed on SLA. There's always this sense of obsession to "youth" in SK. I'm always surprised at adults holding stuffed animals like children would in variety shows like WGM.

It's very hit and miss for me. Some of the outfits are beautiful and sexy and then others makes me think they dressed the actors in the dark because they are so hideous.

He's so mature in mind. He might be younger but I find his acting is even better compare to adult actors. He would be bigger korean actor one day. Seeing him always reminds me Leonardo diCaprio. Both show great actings since their childhood. I definitely will check this out.

So glad too see that among the masses of cookie-cutter bland acting starlets and idols, there are individuals like him – a massively talented kid that could well end up as one of Korea's best actors of his generation.

And he's got oodles personality, which is so refreshing! Fingers crossed we'll see him our screens for many years to come... and I hope he's got some wise hyungs and noonas in the industry that will advise him well.

Leonardo Di Caprio! That who he reminds me of! Thanks so much! He's so adorable! And hot!!! And an awesome actor too! Great to know he's smart and funny! I watched him in Running Man and he's amazing.

How to NOT like this boy? Help! :'(

On a serious note, I'm all for giving people a chance and only judging after seeing but let's be honest, this is so going to be YJG's one-man show (the same way KSH is running circles around pretty much everyone else in School 2015).

I like his self-awareness, especially regarding the drama and how some parts are cheesy, embarrassigly so that it becomes difficult to deliver them, etc.

But from the teasers, the second male lead shows pretty good in actings too. Of course no one can replace this cutie pie...

About School 2015, Kim So Hyun isn't alone as the only good actor in the drama. Yook Sungjae is really good too even if he's a rookie compared to her. Hope Seolhyun does the same with Yro Jin Gu in this.

"Yook Sungjae is really good too..."
I know, right? He's so cute and expressive. Not to mention, his character Taekwang is infinitely more interesting than boy-next-door/super-athlete Yi An; he's flawed and hurt and I love how he has all these barriers around him yet at the same time he yearns for someone like Eun Bi who'll tear those barriers down and give him a genuine emotional connection, for the first time in his life.
Anyway, I'm enjoying School 2015 more than anticipated and I'm looking forward to Orange Marmalade as well. Teen romance? Gimme more.

He might be not the 'so handsome looking' and 'tall-muscles- oppa' kinda actor but once he act, there is a charisma that you can't see even in very popular young actors nowadays. Believe me.

Outstanding child actor - puts a lot of adult actors to shame in his previous dramas especially historical dramas - that is why.

He is not for the shallows. He is amazing to those who appreciate acting talents! He is the best young actor in Korea, end of story.

It's not always about the looks you know. He is an amazing actor and we respect and realize that talent.

Nothing wrong with being short (or tall or anything in between).

He's ugly? To you perhaps. I think he's gorgeous (and cute). He's got a distinct face, not the cookie-cutter bland face you see on many in the industry that makes them all look virtually the same.

He can act, which, with actors is personally one of the most important things for me.

And as some of the others have said, he's got massive amounts of charisma.

I've seen him only in Hwayi which is a decent though not spectular film, but the acting in that production is top-notch. And the thing is, he plays the lead next to a handful of great veteran actors and he holds his own perfectly fine – if not outshines them.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Ah, and looks-wise – there's something that reminds me of Sometani Shota, who some dismiss as not 'good-looking' as well, but who is a standout talent of his generation* in Japan (who also outshines many J-actors decades older than him).

(*along with Kamiki Ryunosuke I'd say, though they are quite different)

All I can think when I see these youngsters is "These are the actors we'll be seeing on our screens in 30, 40 years time".

Too short? How tall are you??? He's taller than most of his female co-stars in heels, so I think that's good enough. He's not 6 ft, but a bit above average height. Most importantly, he can act. That's all you need to understand.

i'm really anticipating this show, and while yeo jin-goo is obviously the main draw, i'm personally looking forward to seeing song jong-ho and am hoping he has a substantial role. i love him as an actor; he really makes each of his performances count, and he's just too underrated. he's way overdue for his breakout role. i will forever love him as the perfect hyung/oppa in reply 1997 too.

between this and producer premiering on friday (where kim soo-hyun looks EVEN cuter than ever), i'm inclined to stay in and just call it a drama night!

Don't even know the guy and not crazy about vampire themes but I saw the teasers and they got me hooked. The marketing department did an awesome job with them. That teary scene and how he kept looking longingly at the girl did it for me.

And, I am a fan of Lee Jong Hyun so that helps too.

I am watching this one for sure! High expectations!

I recently noticed Jonghyun on WGM and Fluttering India - he's adorable on both shows, and I look forward to him in this kdrama. (Talented, too, on that guitar and a sweet voice, CNBlue.)

Vampire theme - heh, I just finished recapping 20 long episodes of Blood. Not sure how that even happened, but if this ends up for grabs, I may tackle it because I'm just that kdramacrazy:)
