Joo-won to start making house calls as SBS’s Yong-pal

Soooooo, what exactly constitutes a medical emergency to get Doctor Joo-won to make a house call? Just wondering. I’m asking for a friend. Confirmations are in for Joo-won (Cantabile Tomorrow, Good Doctor), who has signed on to headline the new medical drama Yong-pal as its title character. I’m not normally a fan of hospital dramas, but this one has a twist of mystery and intrigue that I find appealing (and not in the Doctor Stranger way, please no and thank you) — it’s about an off-the-books doctor who makes house calls to the filthy rich and not-so-law-abiding.

The new drama will be Joo-won’s first for SBS, and it comes from the PD of God’s Gift–14 Days and the writer of OCN’s Reset. Joo-won will star as a third-year resident in general surgery who makes professors and chief surgeons’ jaws drop with his skills as an emergency surgeon. He’s able to figure out risks and save lives with unrivaled skill, but he’s also got a terrible personality. He’s rude and shameless, and will do anything for money.

Even though he’s peerless when it comes to the operating table, he supports a younger sister who needs weekly dialysis treatments, leading him to become a secret doctor who makes illegal (and lucrative) house calls. He goes by the alias Yong-pal and treats the kind of clientele that can’t go to the hospital or call emergency, leading him to witness all manner of sordid gossip in the lives of the wealthy and dangerous.

With the God’s Gift PD at the helm and a premise like that, I’m excited for the potential dramatic turn from Joo-won. He’s the kind of actor who always grounds everything and delivers no matter how absurd or utterly heartrending the situation, so I’m hoping that this is a meaty character with a lot of demons to work through. Selling your principles to guerilla-doctor the rich and powerful is probably a good start.

Kim Tae-hee (Jang Ok-jung, Live For Love) is still considering the offer to co-star, and Yong-pal is slated to follow Mask on Wednesdays and Thursdays in August.

Yay! Hope this will be good. The team seems solid. Joo Won is great in darker, meatier roles. Now they got to have a decent leading lady since I heard KTH rejects.

House call doctor - Rich people, reminded me of Royal Pains (English) TV series.

It also reminds me of the the show called "Rush", which only had one season on USA Network. It was about a private doctor who did house calls for less-than-squeaky-clean clientele in LA and always asked for cash up front.

So it maybe a mash-up of Royal Pains and Rush!

I don't mind Kim Tae Hee. She's good if given suitable role. What I think the most important is the storyline.

Yes!!!! Joowon will be back in dramaland! And yey for his first SBS drama. He has been KBS's golden boy for so long. Glad to see him venturing out.

As for the female lead, KTH seems just ok. Although, right now I cannot think of an actress who'd be good as his partner. Hmmm...

Why are only surgeons the only medical assholes in dramaland? There are no maladjusted and/or vampiric...idk pediatricians, or gynecologists (that would be scary) or heck vets with amazing skills and terrible bedside manners are there? I'm sensing discrimination here.

Also, what beside gunshot and stab wounds would an off the books doctor be needed for? With this information so far, I hope there are gangsters. I mean, unless he does boob jobs on the side too...

Organ transplants....?

Required fields are marked *

Omg, that would be quite interesting. Because if we're dealing with illegal organ transplant then I'm quite curious if they will touch on the legal paper work that's needed because of the black market and how live organ harvesting is such a big problem in China.

Required fields are marked *

Ohhh yep that fits the bill. But then gangsters (if tv is to be believed) are heavily involved in black market organ transplanting, so there's still hope!

Required fields are marked *

Maybe because it's like that in reality? You know, screaming in operating room and stuff. I cannot see a pediatrician hates children to the guts. And I don't think Korea will ever make a drama about gynecologists (as they need to involve leg spreading in every episode)

True about the pediatricians (although with some people you can't be too careful). I think there have been gynecologist scenes in some older dramas, so anything is possible. I was mostly being facetious, but it would be fun to mix it up. Those were just the only examples of doctor types off the top of my head.

birth of illegitimate child? ill secret child? illness that should be kept secret from media due to company/name reputation? you know, those people who wants to run for elections, company founders or board of directors' members cant be involved in any illness or unwanted attention.

anyway, i'm guessing his snobbish attitude may be from the fact that he knows that he's a skilled genius, but he has to resort to do those secretive matters that may be deemed 'low'. a desperate genius, thus the huge ego.

cant wait to hear him lash out at doctors. i love to hear him scream at people. he did it so well in Gaksital. he even tells people off in Naeil Cantabile. kekeke!

Wanting him in intense and meaty role so badly after his awesome Gaaaaaaksital..

I wish Joo Won get a more compatible partner (in term of age and acting skill) for this drama... I don't feel the chemistry in his last 4 dramas.. His previous partners, Eugene in Baker King was okay and Uee in Ojakgyo Brothers was awesome.

But... I just don't care.. I will still watch intese Joo Won in this drama no matter what..

This seems like the kind of drama that would do well taking on a slice-of-life format sans the 'usual' love-line. But I suppose I'd have to look to cable or Japan for that.

In any case, the plot is interesting and with the PD, it will be nicely directed. I didn't watch reset so I know nothing about the writer and then there's Joo Won......:D

Hope he will get a leading lady who can match him with acting skills. On the side note, if only we can have our Bridal Mask OTP back for another round, and I'm referring to our Kang-to & Shunji couple... too bad Park Ki-woong is still serving his MS.

Wow. So many negative comments about Kim Tae Hee. She may have been in some flops in the past but hasn't most actors starting out? I don't know - I thought My Princess was cute. I liked it . And she's not a bad actress in my opinion. Much better than Shin Se Kyung and Gu Hye sun.

i think because they think Kim Tae Hee is not campatible with Joo WOn. i dunno, maybe here there are all fans of joo Won, i personally have nothing against Joo Won, just i never finish any of his drama. For now, im only in if Kim tae Hee is here, otherwise 50-50 depends on the lead actress. if only for joo won, maybe not.

not everyone here are fans of Joowon, though i am one of his fans. when i first heard of the drama's storyline, i've liked it already. some dramas cast newbies and it still turn out to be majors. some dramas cast major casts, but turned out to be a flop due to bad directing and/or writing. so the drama's success depends on both storyline, directing and also casting. lately, we do see much improved combination of these three factors.

based on the comments above, i dont see anyone bashing KTH. they just state that they're hoping for better actresses. they know Joowon's acting level, and he performs better with an established/experienced actress as his co-star.

from what i read, KTH does well if the character suits her. there is not much info to make out of the female character, and it seems this drama is male-centered. if she takes on the drama, i hope she will do justice for the character and does her best.

fighting Yongpal! it's time Joowon returns to dramaland.

wow, never know that Joowon's acting level is so good that not anyone can be paired with him. i do watch some of his dramas, but i really cant judge his acting ability. it seems to me just average acting level.

but i do agree KTH will does well if the character suits her. otherwise it will be a miss. but im eager to see her again after she impressed me in JOJ.

Just wanna let you know.. those who very picky about Joo Won's co-actress are not necessarily all Joo Won's fans. I have known some who said so are just neutral drama fans who acknowledge Joo Won's talent. As a fan I don't mind who is his partner as long as he enjoys working with them.

if not Kim Tae Hee, i hope Baek Jin Hee will be offered. then i maybe consider to watch this drama...

joo won in another surgeon's role? he is a another genius? can you just not stereotyped yourself coz its boring. Pass!

0

Required fields are marked *

Are you saying Joo Won is boring for stereotyping himself? Not sure if you have watched him in Good Doctor, that's not a typical surgeon role nor genius role although technically it would be right to classify them as such. Joo Won's character in Good Doctor was autistic and that was a huge part of the role.

Joo Won has so far nailed it in every role he takes although not all his dramas have been successful. This is not the first time he takes roles which are similar but only in vocation. For example, he was a policeman in Ojakgyo Brothers and again in Bridal Mask and in the movie, Catch Me. There was however nothing similar in the stories, characters nor the way he played them.

If you were just lamenting that this role is stereotypical, then I can understand. I do agree that kdramas have plenty of stereotypes and geniuses too plentiful. But Joo Won is very good at making each of his roles unique and different. That to me demands a higher acting skill than an actor who tries different roles but act the same way. Or like some, you see the actor himself rather than the character. It has never happened to Joo Won and thus I doubt it will happen in this role.

Since you have mentioned about his past works, I realize he has been in so many roles as a policemen. Another stereotype. I can understand that you are his fan but people do have different opinions. I have seen his dramas and I found his acting is just mediocre. sorry. you can defend your bias but this my opinion please respect that. The one that stood out for me is okjakyo brothers as his acting was natural there but I could not stand his excessive stares in king of baking and his creams in bridal mask, for me he was over-acting in both dramas. I cannot judge him in comedy coz I have not seen it but @SS, I can understand that you are his fan and get to say he is the greatest actor to ever grace the earth but for me he is just ordinary.

ikr, smh i think joowon is overrated by his fans.. his facial expression smh turn me off. dunno y.

tbh, im a loyal fan of KTH but it doesnt prevent me to say that her acting ability is just average. she will do better in rom com instead of heavy drama.. but if she is to take this drama, i will give a try for her.

I respect your opinion but just wanna let you know, your opinion belongs to minority.. As far as what I always read from even non fans, Joo Won has always been known for varying roles. He's not yet prefect but 'versatility' is a keyword forr Joo Won.
