Mask: Episode 8

Just as Min-woo starts to get honest with himself and with Ji-sook about his feelings, doubts start to creep in about who she really is and what her motives are. She’s going to have to stop being so passive and get savvy if she wants to stick around, especially since her true identity is in danger of being exposed. And it’s more important than ever that she get her family’s debt paid, before Ji-hyuk does something on his own that can’t be taken back.

EPISODE 8: “A Logical Delusion”

Seok-hoon arrives home, and spies Min-woo kissing Ji-sook. Ji-sook pushes Min-woo away and starts to tell him her real name, but Seok-hoon quickly rushes in to interrupt. He says that Ji-sook’s nanny is sick and they need to go to the hospital, and brushes off Min-woo’s attempts to go with them.

Min-woo only gives in when Ji-sook asks him to stay home, and both he and Mi-yeon watch their spouses leave with each other. Mi-yeon wryly says that she’s not even surprised anymore.

Seok-hoon avoids Ji-sook’s questions in the car, and it quickly becomes apparent that he lied and her mother isn’t sick. He nearly drives them off an embankment before he slams on the brakes. Instead of explaining, he tells Ji-sook that his father used to work at a factory when he was young, and lost his fingers in an accident.

The company refused to compensate him, and he fell off a roof while protesting and died. That’s when Seok-hoon realized that those without power get stepped on, and he decided to create a world where those without power and money can be happy. And to do that, he must have the power.

He says that’s his reason for living, and asks if hers isn’t her family. He yells that to do that, she needs to win Min-woo’s heart — but not to give him hers. He demands to know why she didn’t tell him about Jung-tae, assuming she was hoping that Min-woo would take care of it, and he seems jealous that she would look to someone other than him to solve her problem.

Ji-sook turns his words back on him, and says that because of her reasons for living, she’ll never believe his lies again. She warns him not to use her family to get at her again, and actually renders him speechless. Awesome.

Back at home Mi-yeon tells Min-woo that their spouses are more than just in-laws to each other, but that everyone thinks she’s strange for when she tries to tell them. She challenges him to learn more about his wife, and gives him a pen with a painted flower on it as a clue.

At breakfast, Min-woo’s father tells Ji-sook to start working in the main office to learn more about the business. Stepmom wonders if the other employees will feel uncomfortable, but Dad says that Ji-sook is to hide her family connection for that very reason. Stepmom suggests that Mi-yeon should also work there, and Dad agrees, to Mi-yeon’s horror.

Ji-sook wonders what to wear for this kind of job, and apologizes to Min-woo for the previous night. He apologizes in turn for the skinship, since it was against their agreement, and asks what she meant when she said she wasn’t Seo Eun-ha.

Ji-sook pretends she just meant she’s not the kind of person he thinks she is, and Min-woo doesn’t seem to buy it but lets it slide for now. Before she goes he shows her the pen that Mi-yeon gave him, noting the fact that she doesn’t seem to recognize it.

Mi-yeon shows up at the office in an overly-flouncy (and frankly confusing) outfit, and runs into Ji-sook who’s dressed in a sharp, understated suit. They decide to pretend not to know each other at work, and Mi-yeon immediately gets off on the wrong foot with her coworkers by refusing to introduce herself.

Min-woo gets in trouble for firing Jung-tae’s construction company for the new mall, but he stands by his decision and refuses to change it. He gets a call that someone he was looking for has been found, and on his way out of the office, notices that Mi-yeon’s big contribution to the work load is to paint her nails.

The gossipy employees grumble about it, figuring that she’s either nuts, or that someone high-up in the company is protecting her. Stop, you’re both right! They wonder if she’s got something going on with Min-woo (ick) and recruit Ji-sook to try to find out what Mi-yeon’s deal is.

The woman gossip decides to set Mi-yeon straight, and pulls rank on Ji-sook when she asks her not to confront Mi-yeon. The gossip pulls them both aside and fusses at them for playing around on their first day, and Mi-yeon actually laughs in her face. She threatens to see Mi-yeon fired and Mi-yeon wonders if she can, and invites her to bring it on.

Ji-sook is shocked when Jerkface Jung-tae stomps into the office within inches of her, too furious to see her. She hides in plain sight by pretending her coworker’s shoes need to be tied, and Jung-tae makes a scene yelling for Min-woo.

Ji-sook flees to the elevator, but Jung-tae makes it in before the door closes and Ji-sook is forced to turn her face to the wall. But her coworker notices her, then Jung-tae sees her, and when she runs off he asks why the coworker called her “Seo Eun-ha.”

The person Min-woo was looking for turns out to be the pen’s manufacturer, but he says he has no record of the person who bought it. He does remember that a woman had it made specifically, with one of her own paintings as the design. Min-woo shows him a picture of Eun-ha, and the man says she does look like the woman who bought the pen.

Next Min-woo goes to the gallery to look at Eun-ha’s paintings, but none of them look like the painting on the pen. He heads home to look through Ji-sook’s dresser, and finds a note in her diary mentioning Chang-soo, of all people.

Upset, Min-woo confronts his assistant, who starts to stammer and says that Eun-ha asked him not to say anything about this. Min-woo intimidates him into spilling the details, so Chang-soo drives him to Ji-sook’s family’s restaurant. Ah, the note was about the orphanage catering.

Min-woo goes inside, and even sits to eat, but Ji-hyuk enters the room and the two men make eye contact. Min-woo remembers Ji-hyuk from when he crashed the party, and also remembers seeing him outside the ambulance when they were taking Mom to the hospital.

Min-woo quickly leaves but Ji-hyuk follows him out, asking why he came here. Min-woo promises to say why if Ji-hyuk first explains why he interrupted their party. He offers to give him money if he needs it, if he’ll just leave his wife alone.

Min-woo gets back in the car, but Chang-soo’s phone rings with a call from Ji-hyuk. Min-woo hangs his phone out the window to show Ji-hyuk, telling him that their catering sponsor is his assistant, and drives away as Ji-hyuk looks crestfallen.

Min-woo goes to Seok-hoon’s office to asks where Seok-hoon went with Ji-sook last night, since it obviously wasn’t the hospital — he just saw Ji-sook’s “nanny,” making rice cakes and looking perfectly healthy. He now thinks that Mom was Eun-ha’s nanny and her son was Eun-ha’s lover, and asks why Seok-hoon didn’t tell him any of this. Seok-hoon fibs that he just didn’t want to upset him, but insists that the “nanny” really was ill last night.

Seok-hoon pretends to be very concerned that Eun-ha keeps meeting with her lover, and advises Min-woo to straighten things out with his wife. Min-woo stands to leave, and suddenly his eyes widen at something across the room, though we aren’t shown what it is.

The maid and butler get the couch ready with new fancy bedding, though Maid Yeon-soo whines that sleeping all cuddled up is so much better. HAHA, Min-woo’s Are you kidding me? face is perfect. Ji-sook insists that she should keep sleeping on the couch, so Min-woo proposes an honest talk.

He brings up the kiss (or in his words, “that thing with our lips,” hee), and he doesn’t explain it away by saying he was drunk, admitting that he really just wanted to kiss her. He asks her, if something like her nanny getting sick happens again, to please go with him from now on. He says it as if it’s to avoid rumors, but he’s really just jealous.

It’s Seok-hoon’s turn for a broody shower, as he fixates on seeing Min-woo and Ji-sook kissing. Afterward he asks Mi-yeon about her first day at work, and she complains that she doesn’t know what to do there. She gives him something to drink, promising to tell him what it is after he drinks it.

Seok-hoon’s yucky-face shows that it must be nasty, whatever it is, and Mi-yeon says ominously that soon he’ll lose strength, then fall unconscious. But she’s just kidding — it’s earthworm soup. Is that supposed to be better? It’s apparently some kind of male potency aid, to help them make a baby.

Min-woo can’t sleep, and keeps staring at Ji-sook lying in the bed. He finally sits up to ask her a question — what’s her goal? She’s not interested in the company, so what does she want? And, once she gets it, will she leave? Aww, his expression when he asks that last one kills me. Ji-sook only says sadly that she can’t leave because she has nowhere to go, and lies back down.

Things are a different level of awkward in Seok-hoon and Mi-yeon’s room, since the aphrodisiacs he’s been taking don’t seem to be working. He tells her not to believe the salespeople, only to believe him. Even when he lies.

He leans up to kiss Mi-yeon, clearly intent on some baby-making — but his phone rings, and I know he’s the villain but I don’t blame him one bit for that Glare of Doom. He goes out to meet Jung-tae, who wants to know about Min-woo’s wife. He can’t get over how much she looks like the woman he claims he used to fool around with.

Of course the odd thing is, that woman died a month ago. But he keeps running into her, and she’s acting strangely, and now she appears to be working at SJ Group, with the same name as Min-woo’s wife. So Jung-tae figures the two women were switched. This revelation is going to be what kills him, isn’t it?

Jung-tae thinks this is all news to Seok-hoon, and tells him he should look into it. In return for keeping his mouth shut, he wants a promise that his construction company will get all of SJ Group’s business from now on. He gives the bribe to Seok-hoon to deliver to Min-woo, and confirms that he hasn’t told anyone else his theory about Eun-ha.

The next day, Director Shim gives Jung-tae’s photo and a syringe to Ji-hyuk, instructing him to inject Jung-tae with the contents of the syringe tonight. It’s a well-paying job, killing a man, enough to finish paying off Ji-hyuk’s father’s debt.

Shim gets a cigarette but has no lighter, and Ji-hyuk takes out his own. But instead of lighting Shim’s cigarette, he sets the photo on fire, and says that he’ll report them if they ever ask him to do anything like this again.

Ji-sook gives herself a nasty papercut at work, and Min-woo sees and pulls her into his office, yelling about her carelessness. But once there, he just hands her a bandage, forbidding her to thank him. Awww. While she’s putting it on, he asks if she knew Seok-hoon before she met him.

She says she did, but they didn’t meet under pleasant circumstances, and stalls by asking if they can not talk about this at work. It’s sweet how he lets her off the hook, saying she doesn’t have to tell him if she doesn’t want to. And as she leaves, he tells her not to hurt herself at work again, because it hurts him to see.

Ji-sook’s mother collapses at the restaurant and lands in the hospital, where Dad fusses at her for not telling them she’s been sick. She says it wouldn’t have changed anything, and they can’t afford the treatment anyway. Dad asks if she’s rather just die, and this upsets Ji-hyuk enough to leave the room. It’s cirrhosis of the liver, which could be fatal without treatment, and Ji-hyuk only considers for a moment before making a call.

At the office, Mi-yeon takes the call, and hands it over to Ji-sook saying loudly that it sounds like her boyfriend. Ji-hyuk begs Ji-sook to see him just for a minute, but she barks at him never to call again and hangs up. She doesn’t notice, but Min-woo heard the whole thing from his office.

Scar spends a busy afternoon injecting something into cans of beer, which Jung-tae downs in Seok-hoon’s office that evening. Seok-hoon tells him all about his hatred of a world run by money, but Jung-tae is more interested in whether Seok-hoon found out anything about Min-woo’s wife, because he needs this contract.

Seok-hoon tells him to wait a bit and everything will be settled. Soon enough, Jung-tae stands to get more beer and the room starts to spin. He slumps to the ground gasping, and Seok-hoon calmly quotes Crime and Punishment, “A remarkable person changes the world. A remarkable person can rise above good and evil. I am that remarkable person.”

He tells Jung-tae not to struggle and waste his remaining energy, as he snaps on a pair of rubber gloves. He ponders that he’s not sure if it will be suicide or murder, but Jung-tae isn’t going to survive either way. Seok-hoon injects Jung-tae with something, and tells him that his death will benefit mankind.

Ji-hyuk goes back to Director Shim’s office with a resigned expression, but afterward he tries one last time to talk to Ji-sook. She’s not answering her phone and his phone is almost out of power, so he waits outside the gates to the Choi home in hopes of seeing her. A gate guard sees him, and chases him off.

He finds a safer spot and leaves her a voicemail, asking if she remembers the toy gun he took to rob the bank. He says he has to do something worse than that, because Mom is really sick. He gives the address where he’s going, and asks that if she was ever his sister, to please stop him. Oh, that’s heartbreaking.

The gate guard reports to Ji-sook about the kid hanging around outside, so she finds her phone and sees that he left a message. Before she can listen, Min-woo walks into the room with the painted pen, and asks who the man was that she was in love with. Dude, you deserve an answer, but this is the worst possible timing!

He insists that regardless of their promise not to get involved in each other’s personal lives, they’re married and he has to know. He says there’s no way she doesn’t remember the pen, but the sincerity in her eyes when she says she doesn’t, gives him pause. She’s also a little frantic and clutching her phone, so he says he can tell she’s distracted and lets her go.

Ji-sook quickly listens to Ji-hyuk’s message, but when she tries to run out of the room Min-woo grabs her arm. He offers to go with her, then wonders angrily if she’d rather go wherever she’s going with Seok-hoon.

Seok-hoon arrives at the house seeming tired, and Mi-yeon quips that he’s been awfully busy lately. Both of them see Min-woo and Ji-sook leaving the house together, and Seok-hoon looks angry. Mi-yeon asks if he needs to leave again, but he says he finished his business for the night.

Ji-sook tries to call Ji-hyuk from the car, but is unable to reach him since his phone battery finally died. She can’t tell Min-woo what’s wrong, but she does answer his question about her goal. She says that to some people, just living an ordinary life is a dream. And that’s her goal — to live an ordinary life.

They’re rear-ended by another driver, and Min-woo gets out to exchange information. Seeing her chance, Ji-sook runs around to the driver’s seat and drives away, leaving Min-woo in the road.

Ji-hyuk arrives at the address, and he’s so nervous that a passing neighbor startles him badly and he falls over. But he gets back up and uses the keycard to enter the apartment.

Ji-sook is pulled over for speeding, but she doesn’t have her license with her and the policeman isn’t willing to let her go. She’s taken to the station, but the cops want to fingerprint her to confirm her identity. Knowing her prints won’t match Seo Eun-ha’s, Ji-sook refuses, and several policeman hold her while they try to force the fingerprinting.

Min-woo caught a taxi and followed Ji-sook, thank goodness, and he arrives in time to see Ji-sook being manhandled by the cops. He walks to her, but suddenly remembers a meeting with his psychiatrist when he’d been told that he was hallucinating a large portion of his life.

We see Min-woo’s secret room, where he’s got articles pinned to the walls and a board with all sorts of information on his family members. The doctor mentions one theory that his uncle killed his father, and says his theories may all be delusions.

Now we see what Min-woo saw in Seok-hoon’s office — a painting done by Eun-ha, which he’d seen in a gallery brochure in Eun-ha’s desk. While researching this, he’d seen a photo from Seok-hoon’s law school graduation, in which Eun-ha had been giving him the pen as a graduation gift.

Min-woo looks into Ji-sook’s pleading eyes, and his doctor’s words that he can’t count on his memories echo in his head, and he doesn’t know who to trust.

COMMENTS

Well, this looks terribly bad for Ji-sook. Min-woo knows who the man Eun-ha loved was, and it makes things even worse that Ji-sook keeps going off alone with Seok-hoon under suspicious circumstances. Min-woo isn’t going to buy any excuses that she’s got leftover amnesia from her accident, given that she and Seok-hoon still seem to be thick as thieves. And since Ji-sook really doesn’t know that Eun-ha and Seok-hoon were having an affair, she’s not even going to be able to deny wrongdoing with any believability, and could out her true identity just by not knowing a crucial bit of information. She’s going to have to count on Min-woo’s growing feelings for her, and his worry that he can’t trust his own thoughts, to get the benefit of the doubt from him.

Speaking of which… it feels like, now that Min-woo gave in to his urge to kiss Ji-sook, that we’re just inches away from an actual confession. I love that he’s being so open about his feelings, and tells Ji-sook what he’s thinking every step of the way. He admitted that he kissed her because he wanted to and no other reason, which is wonderful proof that he’s fully aware of his emotions, but also takes away her ability to brush it off as a drunken impulse. You can’t tell yourself that the guy doesn’t really like you, when he’s making a point to say that he really likes you at every opportunity.

On the flip side, I’m getting frustrated (and I know I’m not the only one) at Ji-sook’s emotionally closed-off demeanor. It’s such a breath of fresh air to see Min-woo opening up and being honest, in spite of the fact that the real Eun-ha told him in no uncertain terms that his feelings weren’t welcome and didn’t interest her. So as much as I’m enjoying his honesty, it’s making Ji-sook’s reservedness stand out even more. I can understand her motives, as I’ve said before, because she’s got so many other things to be worrying about right now than whether Min-woo kissed her and why. But I’d like to see a little bit of reaction from her other than tucking in her chin and speaking softly.

And I know she’s being written that way on purpose, because even Min-woo asked if he makes her nervous, but why? Does he make her nervous, or is she just afraid to give anything away? Did she feel anything when he kissed her? Does it mean anything to her when he asks her if she plans to leave? That was such a vulnerable moment for him, and I feel like Ji-sook’s continued lack of any response is starting to cut us as viewers off from Min-woo’s growing emotional attachment. We’re being shown so much of Min-woo’s feelings, it’s starting to feel strange that we’re not being shown how Ji-sook feels, too. Heck, we know more about what Mi-yeon goes through on a daily basis, than we do of the heroine’s feelings. It’s probably harder for her to open up, because she doesn’t have anyone to talk to about it while everyone else has at least one person they can go to and say what they’re thinking, but I know this writer is capable of letting us in to her thoughts and feelings. Come on now, I want to know — did Ji-sook swoon even a little when Min-woo kissed her??

Regardless, things are going to get a lot more difficult from here on out. Min-woo’s realizations of his feelings come right when he realizes that Ji-sook (he thinks) has been carrying on an affair with his brother-in-law, right under his nose. It’s going to make the emotional situation a lot stickier to navigate, not to mention undermining Seok-hoon’s orders to Ji-sook to make Min-woo care for her. And I’m glad that Min-woo’s gaslighting is about to come back into play, because I honestly found that the most compelling part of the story in the beginning. Even though I know it’s going to complicate things on all fronts, I’m ready for that ugly situation to rear it’s head again, and breathe some life back into a plot that’s about to be in danger of repeating itself.

JS is affected by the kiss as she berated herself for being crazy when she thought about it.

MW has a large mountain to climb now that he is so close to the truth. It can all go pretty bad for JS if he rejects her which is possible as we're only on episode 8! Bring on the makjang!

I love the show too. It's addicting somehow. Perhaps the 2 male leads' great acting has a lot to do w it. Or the way their chars are so intriguing.

I've a Qn:
How long has it been since JS has cut a deal w Seok Hoon? Has she paid any of her family's debt in that time? Why is she carrying that shopping bag of cash walking around the neighbourhood trying to make payment at the bank, and then trying to pay off the loan sharks, instead of having SH make the payment? She slapped him a few eps ago, and he still hasn't paid off her family's debts?

And her mother has cirrhosis. Has Seok Hoon done anything to help her? If he hasn't delivered on either front, then why is she honouring her end of the deal? Come on Lady, man up and kick his balls, or better yet, cut them off!

In this ep, they've promoted SH from a normal bad guy into a deranged one, who thinks he is Superman, above the law and morals. I'd be happier to have him be just evil. Once you turn a char into black or white, all the nuances go out the window.

@kdaddict I don't think that she has paid any of her family's debt yet.. She had to run away while she was trying to give the money in the coffee shop ,as one of the loan shark nearly caught her

@ KDaddict?JCW

"How long has it been since JS has cut a deal w Seok Hoon? Has she paid any of her family’s debt in that time?"

The debt I believe includes interest that is continually being compounded. I'm not sure how much Ji Hyuk was able to pay back. As for Seok Hoon, he claimed that he would do it later or slowly etc as part of his hold over Ji Sook. So in order to keep her under control, he probably did not pay off everything or not much. He did send Scar to enquire into buying off debts, but that could have been a lead in to what's happening this episode ie getting Loan Shark to use Ji Hyuk as fall guy for a crime like murder.

"If he hasn’t delivered on either front, then why is she honouring her end of the deal?"

At the moment she feels isolated and not sure whom to trust. When she ran to the police before, SH was there, so the law will not helpher. He has proved that his threat towards her and her family can be easily carried out, as evidenced by almost being run over by Scar. So she does not dare to risk it even if he does not appear to be doing his part of the deal.

Hi GB, Thanks for your reply. I was too incensed by her lot to make sense of why she can't get the debts paid off. I guess it actually makes sense for SH to NOT pay it all off, cos once he does, what's to keep her at the Crazy House, right?
Now Mom needs a liver op or transplant. And dongsaeng is on the verge of being booked for murder. Oh, the makjang! This family can't ever catch a break. Tho by comparison, the rich family really isn't that much better off in terms of happiness either. Hence the melo. And we're loving it! ?

Thank you very much Lollypip for this great recap i love reading your thoughts about this drama :)
Ji sook is definitely affected by the kiss, she didn't push him away when he kissed her and even told him right away she is not the person he thinks he married Ughh if it wasn't for evil Seok Hoon she would have probably told him the truth about her secret. Anyway now Min woo finally knows that his brother in law is the man that Eun Ha truly loves! it's only a matter of time until he figures out Ji sooks true and real identity!

Poor Mi-Yeon is so in love with her crazy bastard husband, despite knowing full well about his affair w her "SIL". I don't think being an alcoholic is the way to get on his good side, tho honestly, who knows what is! What does he want from her: Help him win her dad's company? Or help him kill her parents, and then herself??? Ugh! Tough spot to be in.

Now that MW knows of SH's affair w his 'wife', how to proceed? Would JS not acknowledging or refuting it n staring blankly tip him off that sthg is Off?

And JS's brother. Does he have to die or be in real trouble for JS to wake up from her stupor? She's been like a member of the walking dead, which isn't nearly as engaging as the way the guys are behaving in this show.

@KDaddict?JCW

I was thinking that each time Min Woo asked about the pen, he was testing Ji Sook, and that he found she passed the test. He also remembered that she said she is Eun Ha. If he can put this together, he could believe that the one who had an affair with Seok Hoon is not this woman. The problem lies in whether he can trust himself, what he sees and what he thinks is true.

@Sumee
That would be great as long as no one else finds out that he knows and that she's an imposter. The risk is quite great. The company's stock prices will plunge, Ji Sook may end up in jail for fraud, her family will be affected plus back to square one with the loan sharks.

If Min Woo knows and can take the right steps to help get her out of the entanglement and deal with SH, that will be great, but I don't know how he can if he is being undermined by SH, by evil doctor and step mum.

0

@gb point noted. He is the only one who needs to know the truth

0

Hi GB and Sumee,
We are only at ep 8. It's supposed to have 20 eps. There'll be plenty of eps for JS and her family to suffer. And MW too for that matter. Every time he comes closer to the truth, SH will find a way to make him think he's delusional, I'm sure. It should be a while b4 MW can find a way to get her out of her entanglement. Dealing w SH should be No easy feat. I'll be biting my fingernails.

I totally agree with you! JS's character is so frustrating and boring! All she does is crying and acting hesitant, sheepish, passive and stupid! It just drives me crazy! That's why I just don't get it how MW could fall in love with her?!
And I don't blame the actress, I blame the writers of the show.

We all know that Min Woo is lack of being loved.
Remember what the real Eun Ha said to him? Some kind of "you don't have someone to love? I'm sorry to you, really"
AND he also stated himself in his so-called gibberish to Ji sook,"the fact that you have someone you cry, hurt, and love for, I envy that.."
He needs love and to love, someone he can care about and protect.
First, he was quite shocked that Jisook "want to be with him" in their wedding day considering the "scorpion-self" that he thinks he is, he thought that this woman still want to be with him (even though we all know what the real reason is).
Second, he was attracted to her innocent smile in the market when the bought some fruits.
Third, he said to Jisook in the car that he knows exactly how it feels to be alone and isolated.
And recently, when he feels that Jisook wears the mask as similar to him, the sense having companion in his loneliness storm just making him more attracted to Jisook.
There were plenty of reasons shown throughout the last 5 episodes.
I screamed in wishper,"stupid giiirl, dont do thaaat!" when jisook wandering around with the money

I think the writers are setting up Mi Yeon to have a sympathetic turn-around. Most of the bad things she does are either sort of silly and small, or wrongheaded but kind of with this undercurrent of sympathy. Or they're grow out of her sadness/alcoholism. I'd be shocked if she didn't become Team SH by the end.

I like Mi Yeon and the two male leads. SH/JS is frustrating for me. SHe's in this complicated situation, but seems not to have thought through any sort of plan for the obvious, inevitable situations that are arising.

Thank you LollyPip!

You were saying that we do not know what's going on with Ji Sook's feelings. I guess the only clue is that she has been thinking about their kiss, although she berates herself over this.

What I found quite funny was Mi Yeon trying to bluff Seok Hoon that she had given him a poisoned drink which would weaken his legs, etc. And his expression when he heard it was earthworm soup!!! But this was a fitting foreshadowing of the poisoning of Jung Tae... whose legs did give out first.

I'm also amused by the title for this episode, "Logical Delusion" there is a theme of goals and reasons for living. Seok Hoon goes uncharacteristically into sharing his goal, and it does sound like a delusion. He wants to over-turn a world where people in power stomp on those without it, and he goes around accomplishing this by stomping on people like Ji Sook. Granted he also wants to take down or discredit the powerful such as Min Woo (or he did by making him look crazy) but the really crazy person seems to be Seok Hoon now.

Even Min Woo is concerned about goals. What Ji Sook wants and what will keep her with him. Ji Sook probably only wants to survive each day, preferably outside of that household, where life can be more ordinary. At least these two make sense.

I find their goals totally logical and Seok Hoon's goals quite delusional. Can I say, "Poor villain!"??? :)

Re "Poor Villain":
What's his name shitface can't possibly be the only person out there who knows JS. There might be other classmates or coworkers or neighbors of hers that could run into her when she is w MW or at the dept store, art gallery etc., and come to question her identity. Since she behaves in a most suspicious way when confronted, ppl are going to come to the right conclusion that she is impersonating Eun Ha. If she could buff a little, ppl wouldn't be so sure. So how many ppl does SH plan on killing when they come forward to voice their suspicion? To me, he's already quite Cracked. Not that I don't find him mighty interesting. Yeon Jung Hoon is wonderful.

About Ji Sook bluffing her way to appear like Eun Ha. I've thought repeatedly that although she knows she is supposed to wear a mask, either she is refusing to do so when it comes to impersonating a rich person (which is not likely as she has her family to think about) or she (Soo Ae) is acting like a person who does not know how to act like a rich person. The latter could be it. She is acting like she is not wearing a mask when she is. She is displaying as much truth as she can without getting caught...displaying it intentionally or not, I'm not sure.

And yes she still has a load of bitchy ex-classmates to contend with if they see her... and they might, since they are also supposed to be in the well-to-do set. SH will need to become more creative in doing away with suspicion if Ji Sook refuses to act her part.

About Ji Sook's feelings for Min Woo,... am I the only one who thought that she looked rather disappointed when he told her that he as sorry about the skinship and that he would not go near her again? I feel that she's definitely not averse to his attentions, she even smiled a bit at it in the office when he told her to take care and not get hurt. It was also she who initiated the drinking together session that led to the kiss. It's just the horrid load of threats under which she lives that stops her from opening up more with Min Woo.

With Seok Hoon she asked openly if he was not tired of living this way. It's sad that she cannot be as open with her own husband, which I believe she wants to be.

'Show, quickly give them another drinking session ... we need them to loosen up and divulge all the goodies to each other!!!' :)

The other thing that I was remembering about Ji Sook and the kiss, ... unlike other female leads who continue to look down so that the tall guy has to bend quite low to start the kiss, Ji Sook turned her face up and sort of met Min Woo's lips so to speak. So she was not unwilling at all and she did not reject him, but only pushed him away when it struck her that he did not know he was kissing an impostor or when guilt hit her and she felt she should not be enjoying that kiss so much. :D Anyway, I loved that kiss!

I have a question about what the doctor said... He said something about it being a delusion that Min Woo thought his uncle had killed his father??? But he does have the chaebol father that he's buttering up and trying to prove himself to. So what father is the doctor talking about? It was his mum who died accidentally, I believe? But what the doc said was definitely 'father' and not 'mother' right? I thought I heard 'father' too.

On a slightly different note, I don't know why Ji-hyuk prefers to take a murder job to taking a rich woman's money. TAKE THE RICH WOMAN'S MONEY. Min-woo offered him money. TAKE IT. You've obviously realised that pride is useless at this point gskajs k gkjkfd

I think he was going to ask about the money at first, which is why he called her first--he only went back to the thugs when she said to never contact her again and hung up on him. Even then, he's been trying to call her. Little bro should STILL keep doing that instead of murder but like KDaddict said, not the brightest bulb and he's desperate.

Speculation: Will this come under possible SPOILER???

Ji Hyuk seems to be set up to take the fall for Jung Tae's murder. If only he does not get found with the body, it will be passed off as suicide. However at the end of this episode he was heading to a place where I believe Jung Tae has been placed. If he is found on the spot, the syringe he is carrying will make it seem like he did the deed and it will be passed off as his murder. If he is arrested, it will put another burden on Ji Sook (again SH will say it's all her fault, etc making him do what he did) and weigh her down even more. I'll be pretty frustrated over this!

Maybe she has to reach breaking point in order to figure out that she could take some action, some how. But Ji Sook better not break!!!

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

My heart is really with MW as he digs for clues about his wife and SH and makes wrong assumptions about her nanny and JH. I really want him to find out JS's identity soon. Not only because she really needs an ally and someone to talk to, but also because of MW's peace of mind. He needs to trust himself that both times he asked JS about the pen, she honestly knows nothing about it. He can't start to doubt himself when it comes to JS!

SH killing Jerkface was expected and I'm glad that sleazy dude is out of the picture. But it's scary how far SH will go to achieve his goals. Even though it's sad what happened to his dad and that he never got justice, it's a really twisted belief that he can manipulate this world in accordance to what he wants. So, he needs power to let those without power live better. But how is he treating JS? He's definitely not helping her or making her feel happy by any means. He's totally delusional with his plan.

JS is definitely attracted to MW though she maintains a distance and keeps playing it off as "let's agree to our business relationship." And since being part of this household, MW is the only one who has shown her kindness, concern, and warmth. She knows that, yet her mind is more occupied with her family and not being discovered by others while trying to face crazy SH at the same time. I just want to see her telling MW honestly who she is, asks for his help, and they will get through everything together.

Now that MW knows the previous lover was SH (what a blow to him) and not the nanny's son, I hope he will investigate further to figure out who JH really is and his relationship with JS. He needs to look past the clues about JS-SH's affair and follow his heart in order to help himself and JS fight against SH. He should be able to tell that JS doesn't like SH, saying they didn't meet on good terms. But JS better start relying on MW more so that it doesn't keep being so suspicious with her going to different places with SH all the time.

JH! I know you need the money for your mom's treatment, but don't do it!! Can't wait to see what will happy since JS is being held up at the police station.

On a side note, how many men had JS-"EH" before or/and after her marriage??? Poor MW! He probably feels he's entered a competition he needs to beat before settling his feelings for her. He comes and goes to that bedroon furiously without being able to sleep. Perhaps he counts "EH"'s lovers...one in Paris, his brother-in-law, the "nanny's son" even his own secretary had something to do with her behind his back :-D. Is he the only one she has pushed away? Will she leave him soon or will she stay out of necessity?? Questions, questions...

So true. So far, it's 4 guys and counting between JS-EH, so MW is thinking all sorts of things about his wife and wondering why she's entangled with all these men and keeping him at bay. It's hurtful and frustrating, especially since he's fallen for her and he really cares about her. He had been respecting her space and choices, yet he couldn't resist asking her in this ep. because he needs to know for sure... Can he trust her? Can he believe that what he has seen is true (her kindness, sincerity, concern for him and others, etc.)? So, I hope JS can show that he can count on her instead of acting one way and then the opposite, which just confuses him.

Poor MW! I've been thinking how JS unintentionally comes across as a "floozy" and even the policemen at the station can't get their hands of her! All of them were grabbing her. MW was just upset that even his assistant was asked to help JS (without his knowledge) and she never once asked for his help. I'm sure he didn't think she was playing around with CS as well. Anyway, I do hope he realizes her true nature soon and help & protect her. ^^

I'm enjoying the show a lot, specially Min Woo and Seok Hoon, who are a pleasure to watch, each one on his own way :D

However the plot feels lacking. It was an impressive set up that they prepare in the first 2 episodes but now it feels like nothing moved from that point: the two women get switched, she marries the rich heir according to the plans that the bad guy has for her. She lives now in the vipers nest, not able to contact her family anymore.
Then what? We are still at the same point 6 episodes later.
The only thing that has changed is that Min Woo has feelings for her now...I will keep watching but I was expecting more action...

It's so lovely to watch Min Woo fall in love! JJH is doing a great job, and he's totally owning Min Woo. I love this actor - he does bring me in the experience of his character.

I also like the dynamism of how his character develops every episode - it is both fun and exciting to watch. I find that the story really moves forward as his character unravels.

(Although I don't care much for SH - I could never empathize with him - I did feel that his character is developing forward. )

Sadly, I could not say the same for JS' character. I feel that her character did not develop in the recent episodes. I find SA's acting in the early episodes wonderful; I empathized with her and I felt her pain, fears, and panic. Thus, it is disappointing not seeing SA act out her character development, having seen what this good actress could deliver.

Ep 8 did establish for me that I could expect a strong love triangle. Now that I've seen how MW fell in love, I'm excited to see what love EH and SH shared. Boy, this is going to be fun! Show, please give us back the wonderful SA!

Τhe truth is smth's wrong between the script and the directing but can't put my finger on it. Had the PD a different approach on the script, same lines could have a total different meaning. I myself can't believe it's SA's acting, either...You're right about the whole preparation and execution of the scenes considering all factors like camera angle and lighting. Secret had a similar problem with a "little" more over-directing than we could handle for that matter. Maybe the writer brings the artist out of the crew and who work on tv constantly :-)

Of course I am loving the drama, it's acting and almost everything, the only thing that bothers me that how Eun Ha and Min Woo's marriage will benefit Seok Hoon( I know I mentioned it earlier too), I am just afraid after so much mystery, tension the writer would come up with no convincing answer (as it happened in School 2015, Soo In's death case was really a let down)

Another thing in this episode that I find a little weird, is when Mi Yeon gave Min Woo a "Pen" as to express her doubt about EH and SH's affair !!!! I really dont get it, when people think I have a tendency to doubt my husband and when I have intimate picture with my sister in law and my husband, why wouldn't I go with the picture of them to report my brother to report it?????? why wouldn't I go all evidence that made me doubt my husband????
But here Mi Yeon dangling the "Pen" in front of her brother, ordered him to smell the fishy and chase the owner!!!!! who does that and why????

then Min Woo, solved the puzzle in half of episode to show us SH and EH knew each other from college days i.e. really for a long time

@ fantasy
I have the same fear. I hope we are given the reasons why things are so convoluted. As many have mentioned before. With the drugs and the entire setup to make Min Woo look like a murderer, why bother to 'resurrect' Eun Ha and let Min Woo regain his position and even improve it with that marriage?

All that drugging and gaslighting by the doctor was the thing that got me invested in having JS become MW's ally to save him from his evil family. But that seems to have evaporated to be replaced by a direct loveline between the OTP instead. I hope the evil doctor returns just to bring on the suspense!!

As for the pen, we'll never know if Mi Yeon ever bothered to look up those photos which seem to be open for anyone to see. However she wanted MW to do the research. Sometimes, when we let a person find out the answers for themselves, it might be more effective in convincing them, but I'm guessing it was a plot device to enable Min Woo to find out about the family restaurant and to speak to Ji Hyuk.

It's also not clear at the time of SH's graduation, what role Mi Yeon had in SH's life. Was she already his wife so that that photo can be taken as evidence of an affair? But although suggestive, it is not proof of an affair, but only of great intimacy. However it gets the husband to doubt his wife, which I think is the main idea.

I too know the photo was not an ultimate proof of affair but still it is stronger than the "Pen", at least to me... I just find it silly because it was Mi Yeon who gave it... If it would happen like Min Woo went to the gallery, happened to see Seo Eun Ha's masterpieces and then discovered the pen on Seok Hoon's desk, got suspicious and investigated then I think I would be okay with that... but Mi Yeon throwing HINTS????

In regards as to why MW and EH marriage will benefit SH, I think there were 2 things. In ep. 1, it was mentioned that MW & EH had signed a contract stating that EH was to receive 2% of Company stock after the marriage. This would be important to SH in his battle to gain control of the company. He is counting on EH giving him the stock and/or voting her 2% his way. Second, EH would be helping him to actively undermine MW. She could give him the drugs, play mind games, etc.

Once EH is dead, SH still needs the marriage to go through so he can get the 2% of Company stock. He feels confident that he can control JS to obey him in all things so I think at the beginning he is not worried about her not giving him control of the stock and doing what he tells her to do with MW. There may also be some other reasons that the marriage would benefit SH that we don't know yet.

MY's not the only child since there's still the half-brother in the family, too. So regarding on who's the father's business favorite, that's quite obvious.
The real question here is why SH couldn't marry the real EH whom he'd apparently known for ages. Was his family backgroung so NOT appropriate for an ambitious politician's daughter? EH clearly loved him but went along when he married MY. So EH did know that SH could marry the daughter of a chaebol that has already an heir to the family business but not the only child of a filthy rich family... Well, this is not the healthiest (extramarital) affair whatsoever, right?
So, what it might have happened to the four of them after the real EH had been married into that family is beyond (a normally vivid) imagination. Manipulation is only one part of the game after all and SH seems as determined to go the whole nine yards as he used to be with the old EH.

I got what you wanted to say but I wanted to say I was okay he planned it with real EH because you know she loved him, he could believe her but what was the reason that he needed ONLY and ONLY Eun Ha even if he had to bring in the fake !!!

0

@fantasy
Yes, SH is definitely counting on controlling the daughter but she probably doesn't have enough shares by herself to take over the company. He is going to need more. He needs EH shares as well. Another thing is EH family-they can't be offended. SJ Group needs EH father's support and political influence because they are under investigation. If EH dad walks away they lose the chance for political power and influence, as well as an ally if they face charges. Not much SH can do if he's in jail on corruption charges. The company stock would also fall, so SH losing money as well as power. This is why SH desperate to have JS stand in once EH dies unexpectedly- EH family mustn't know the truth to keep status quo so EH dad not walk away. EH herself alludes to this in Ep. 2 when she is talking to MY saying that her father can always find a new sponsor (campaign $$ donor I'm guessing since they are always alluding to him running for President) but MY father will have a much harder time finding someone with political influence that can help them with all of the stuff they are under govt investigation for. Which is why MY backs down with the insults after that threat-and hates EH even more.

I am through with this JiHyuk-is-Seo-EunHa's-lover assumption of MinWoo's and JiSook's passiveness and helplessness about this when all I can think of is "why can't JiSook just claim him to be her little-brother-not-blood-brother if MinWoo buys the JiHyuk's-mom-is-EunHa's-nanny angle". After all, if she were that close to her nanny to run out at first mention of her falling ill, shouldn't her being close to her nanny's son be something not unexpected or unacceptable? That's one problem solved AND she gets to stay close enough to her family!

She wanted to do something like that, but one problem with that is that evil bro-in law threateed to kill off JS' s dongseng if she makes contact with him other than for the purose of convincing him they're not related. The second problem is that in that event he was screaming NOOOONAAA and acting too desperate for anyone to believe now that theyre in a casual relationship of him being her nanny's kid and her childhood friend.

0

Required fields are marked *

Eh, I'm still not convinced.

By effectively telling MinWoo that JiHyuk is her sorta-brother (not just childhood friend), a lot of obstructions in the form of MinWoo hindering her disappear. Also, it makes him trust her a liiiiitle bit more, since husbands tend to suspect little brothers more than their wives' ex-es. And many little brothers cling onto or are "sticky" with their elder sisters, so that desperation act was nothing that couldn't be explained away.

Also, just because she tells MinWoo that JiHyuk is her "adopted brother" does not mean that she has to constantly meet JiHyuk and if she doesn't, I don't understand what excuse SeokHoon would have to kill JiHyuk. Plus, she does stand up to SeokHoon regarding her family (see above speechlessness in recap), so I think SeokHoon won't be touching her family all willy-nilly, which is something she shoulc be able to handle.

I don't know. JiSook's aim is to do well by her family, get them out of debt, let them live ordinary, stable lives, but it seems like all she's doing is lower her head and let others push her around when we do know that she CAN and does HAVE the guts to fight back, and very well at that. She's shown to be smarter than she is now, which is why I am so pissed at her. I get that she's alone and afraid and too many things are happening and they're all flying over her head but at some point, she's got to pull herself together, for her and her family's sake and I know she is capable of being fantastic.

Or maybe as fantasy said above, the show is purposely being unnecessarily convoluted and that's where it just loses me.

I agree on her being a pushover and a doormat in the latest episodes to an annoying degree but maybe that's the writer's idea to prolong the drama to 20 episodes. I mean, whether she trusts MW or does it herself, the conflict can be resolved in 9-12 episodes. Really, if she'll continue to behave this passively I swear I'd check her pulse in MW's place to see if she is even alive...

MY's portrait is of a woman on the verge of alcoholism who had been married to a manipulative husband for years. She has (slowly?) become obsessed with him and his "alleged" affairs. Perhaps the writer tries to present her as unstable as possible hence her suspicions sound hysterical and a bit...crazy, as they keep popping up time and again (e.g. her husband's secretary)

Her brother on the other hand looks more the credible and upright one in their family; the ball is in his court now. Her love for her husband could very well blind her all these years, while MW is eager to solve all the mystery of his wife's past (men, lol). "Seek and you shall find", right?? ;-D

It's been a while I love drama's OTP wholeheartedly, more than anything else in the drama.. In this case, I love Min Woo and Ji Sook together!!
Min Woo is really one sexy guy and he keeps talking about his feelings... rather openly. There's something I like when the male lead IS NOT in denial and pretty much confess his own feelings..
Love love Min Woo!

For now, I'm just going to count on Min Woo to not abandon Ji Sook once he knows the truth and even team up with her against evil baddie Suk Hoon.

I just LOOOOVE this drama..there I said it ;)

I can't wait for minwoo to find out the truth, but I'm so positive that episode 9 will begin with minwoo yelling at the cops for handling his wife in that manner, which would verify/confirm her identity as eunha.

I'm hoping that the brother didn't go in the room, but I still think that many eye witnesses watched him go near that room...so he might be a suspect still.

And please writers make jisoo wake up from her nightmare and grow a backbone please :D

True, it's possible because of his 'status' and how he reacts when the police manhandle his wife, that she will get away with not being discovered as an impostor. But if as LollyPip says, MW is struggling about doubts over what he thinks he knows, then we are left in uncertainty and suspense!

"And I know she’s being written that way on purpose, because even Min-woo asked if he makes her nervous, but why? "

I sat agape reading this. And then I realized that that this passage started and ended with a contradiction precisely because it *isn't* the writer.

The writer who is giving such good lines to everyone else didn't decide part way through the drama to scrap her initial characterization of Ji-Sook and re-imagine her as a super passive, terribly stupid, frightened doe. The actress has made those choices for her portrayal of the character. It's not the lines that make Ji-Sook annoying - it's the head down, expressionless nothingness that does. And those bits aren't in a script. Scripts are just lines and minor amounts of direction.

Could it be the director? The director might be contributing something to this poor characterization, but a seasoned actress knows what to do with her eyes to belie her body language so that the audience picks up on nuance.

Out and out, this is an actress problem. She needs to make better choices with how she portrays that character because the audience is grumbling - and they won't stay on her side forever.

Hi Susan
Good to read you! I was wondering who to 'blame' if that is the right word. I know I did not like Soo Ae in 'A Thousand Days' Promise' where her expression did not change much, however I thought she was better here, until recently. Still if as you say it is not the writing and not likely the direction, then it could be her interpretation of the character?

It's absolutely her interpretation of the character. And that's both her fault and the director's. A good director should push her to create a more emotionally accessible character.

Thank you for writing this comment. The same thoughts have been haunting me.

My impression of Su Ae is that in the past few years, she almost always plays this kind of role in melos, almost always plays them like this, weak, passive and frightened, and that's why I'm allergic to her. Just seeing the stills and the synopses was enough to scare me away. Athena was an exception.

I hope she is not boxing herself in by repeating such drama choices.

I've not seen her in anything else, so I didn't know that this is her 'style.' Any actor without range boxes themselves into certain drama choices.

The thing is, I think she could do more. I saw flashes of really good nuanced acting in the first few episodes - so whhhhyyyyyyy? :-) Pardon my frustration!

@ Susan, even though kdramaland do love to categorise the actors into particular genres , SA's been primarily a cinema actor. Her resume is a long one compared to her age. So, I see where you're coming from since SK tv has very little to do with cinema...at least up to now.
Nontheless, it's true that the roles she has been given to in dramas are similar to one another. Sometimes the director's vision of the project is what comes first even before actors' acting range. So I guess, they do their job in tv series and go back to cinema for more divercity and (better) acting! Personally, I didn't expect much from this PD and am still waiting for the writer to do almost everything the same way that had happened in Secret

Acting for film is a little bit smaller than acting for television. It has to do with cameras, media and format.

Directors are hired by producers based on their vision of the material and actors are cast based on their vision of the material. Mostly it's about having a vision that the producer thinks will be popular and will be monetizable.

Casting directors do tend to look to the same actors for the same types of roles whether its for television or for film. It's up to the actor to show up at an audition and show another side of themselves if they want to branch out.

You're right that a director's vision trumps an actor's vision. The casting director meets with the director and discusses vision, then goes out and finds their top 3 or so choices for a role and tapes them. The director reviews the tapes and invites the ones he / she likes in for another reading / taping round. If the director likes the vision of a particular actor and they are for a minor role, they are then hired. If it's for a major role, the actor comes in to meet the producer. This is where issues of monetization come in - is this person popular, can they bring in an audience, how will they be during a promotional push, do they have any scandals, etc. etc.

Ultimately, an actor whose audition vision doesn't match with the director's won't get cast. Here's the thing though - once someone is cast and everything is in production, it's a lot harder to go backward. So, if an actress isn't quite delivering, then the director has to convince her to do so. Usually that's not a problem. Actors are people pleasers by nature. However, you can't squeeze blood from a turnip. Sometimes an actor just can't deliver.

The opposite can also occur - sometimes an actor can't get a clear understanding of what the director wants. It's a hair-ripping experience to have a director who is never happy but can't articulate their vision.

In any case, I think something needs to be done with Soo Ae's character. There's so much potential there - especially since she has such great chemistry with Joo Ji-Hoon!

You're absolutely right on how the film industry works. However, I'm under the impression that things are slightly different in kdramaland. Casting is more fan-based centred and the production team practically is the absolute ruler. If the writer and the PD have a certain point of view artistically speaking, it's impossible for any actor to overcome that hurdle. Unless it's Won Bin asking for major revising on scenarios (a.k.a The Man From Nowhere or TWTWB) the rest of the actors probably have zero saying on the plot; idols-actors and/or tremendous powerful agencies are a whole different issue for that matter.
To make the long story short, SJ-EH's character does indeed need a little boost plot-wise but I seriously doubt it's in SA's hand. Let's keep our fingers crossed the writer follows his usual norm so the heroine becomes more active and decisive in the next two episodes. The time has come for her to stand up to all this paranoia, imho...

0

The comment above is addressing to @Susan...forgot to add your name, cherie :-)

0

:-) The producer is always the absolute ruler. Hahahahaha!

In practice, although the producer has the responsibility for the production as a whole, teams of people are, well, teams of people. To get a good product out, everyone has to find a way to work well together.

On set, the director is pretty much the sole arbiter of what happens. Producers spend most of their their time huddled over a stack of work somewhere.... usually at the production office.

And, of course, you're right that the actor doesn't get to decide plotting. They do, however, get to decide what to do with a performance. Even if the director yells cut 1,000 times - each time the actor redoes something, it comes from them. A good actor brings a certain something to a role - even a bad actor does really. So, Soo Ae could be told to stare at her feet and mumble every scene and she could STILL communicate an inner struggle with her eyes.

I'm sure you're also right about what the writer is planning. Which will be very satisfying when it comes about!

I don't really agree that it is an actress problem. It seems to be more of a directing problem. I am sure that the actress is not the one that chose for example to visit her family's neighborhood in designer clothes and a huge white hat.

0

Required fields are marked *

I don't agree here that this is the actress's fault overall.

First of all is that, the director is the one responsible foremost of how the actors and actresses show their scenes. They tend to change it whenever they don't like how the certain actor act that particular part. I think the character Ji-Sook was interpreted that way by the writer and the director and thus, acted by the actress as such.

The drama's not even halfway shown and yet many are already frustrated with JS's character. I think the writer did this intentionally because this drama has 20 Episodes after all and if we base it with Secret, the heroine will surely undergo through some changes and those changes won't happen abruptly unless there will be a major happening like death and framed murder in this drama's case so she can realize that living that way won't change anything and she should fight back.

Well, I think it's more writer's and director's fault than the actress. I re-watch the first episode and Soo Ae's acting is fine as both Eun Ha and Ji Sook. Everyone with two eyes definitely can differentiate which one is Eun Ha and which one is Ji Sook. Because the actress played the character with distinctive charms, one is cold, unapproachable character, the other is shy and reserved type who has million problems with her family.

Well, this PD also directed Heirs. Remember Cha Eun Sang, he made Park Shin Hye's character as meek, doormat and annoying. While in her other dramas, PSH's acting is just fine.

By the way, I would really like to see Joo Ji-hoon in many more dramas where he has complex characters like this. If it hadn't been for his youthful indiscretion, one wonders what sort of career he would have at this point. He's quite talented.

I'm less into Yeon Jeong-Hun. I can see from the comments that he's very popular and must have of a lot of range as an actor. I'm not sure if it's the way his character is written or the way he's portraying him, but I don't have any empathy for him. I have empathy for the loan shark, the bitchy sister, the bitchy mother, the stupid brother.... so I care about those characters. But the brother-in-law seems more cartoon than person.

You know what might help this drama? And it's something the probably don't have time for. A run through.

I feel like if all the actors could see the whole arc of the episodes with all the other actor's takes on their roles then each would give a performance that would be more 'giving' and it would help the cohesiveness of all of the performances together.

That said, almost no moving image directors do that. It's really rare. And since Korean dramas seem to be shot seconds before airing, I'm guessing that they really really don't have time for that. Or sleep.

Susan, I really have to disagree about this being the actress's fault about not playing her character properly. Soo Ae, is capable of eye contact and holding her chin up high, for eg, how she plays Eun Ha.. It is 100% the director who has the vision of saying, "Soo Ae, you must keep your eyes down in this scene etc etc." If the director is not happy, he or she will shout "CUT" and refilm the scene however many takes until he is "happy." God, I get frustrated when people pin directing/writing issues on an actor's shoulders, just as much as actors who don't have much to work with. That's my opinion on the matter! :D

I also get frustrated when people pin acting / writing issues on an actor's shoulders.

The writing really isn't a problem here.

The lines are good for this character. Showing up in the neighborhood where her family works could work well - it's all how the scene is managed. That's on the director.

The writer is certainly building up to character growth for Ji-sook. It will certainly be nice to see this character get really strong.

My issue is a continuity of character issue. Had Ji-sook started as a weak and pathetic character, I'd have no issue with her being one now. But she didn't - she was a sassy, take care of her dysfunctional family character. It's the choice to turn that character into someone timid that doesn't work for me.

As to whether that is the director or the actress - well, it could be either. However, even if the director is asking for a shy portrayal, an actress with a long resume would be able to have a discussion about how to make the transition from her earlier characterization to the current one. She would be aware of this lack of character continuity. It's her job to do that.

While it's not fair to blame an actor for a writer's or director's influence, it's equally important to put the responsibility of an actor squarely on their own shoulders.

Hi Susan
Thanks for examining and discussing this with us. It's something I've always been interested in... or at least been wanting to find out more about since I've been reading so many comments and opinions that got me thinking and wondering ::D

Another question then: could it be an editing issue? Perhaps there were scenes that could have explained her timid character now but for a reason unknown, they were edited out, so we did not see the scenes that give the reason for her strange meekness?

Or could the order of the scenes have been shifted (this probably not as the flow would be totally gone) so that a more timid Soo Ae and the more dynamic Soo Ae appeared at the wrong moments?

Your suggestion on a run through is good. If only before anyone gets to see most or at least half of the show, the production team/actors get to see it first. I can imagine our viewers' satisfaction would have been great for most shows rather than only hopeful for half (my wild guess) the shows that we watch.

0

I forgot to add... that this brings me to consider with immense admiration and gratitude, those kdramas which have been produced well enough to elicit accolades and love for the actors, writer(s), director, etc. With so much that can go wrong, and no time to fix it, a show which gives high satisfaction with little frustration is a gem and an achievement indeed!!!

0

I agree with Susan that there is a discontinuity issue re Ji Sook's char. She wasn't this much of a dead fish at first. Sure, she has been under a great deal of stress lately, but there were times when she could react in a way that showed there was a live person under that 'mask', e.g. when she slapped SH in front of all the servants. He didn't seem to mind it, perhaps he even enjoyed it, who knows, that perverted twisted delusional maniac! It was rash of her, but it was something. At this pt, I'd be happy if she did something, anything other than playing a dead fish. In particular, I'd really like her to kick him u know where!

@ Growingbeautifully 25.1.2.1.2

This is so much more fun than my actual work right now! :-)

Editing. It's true that editing can really change the tone of things. And it can also happen that an actor does one take one way and another take another way so that a transition of emotion can be caught through the edit. It's unlikely though that they make 10 different takes while everyone pursues different character concepts. Time is money! And for Kdramas, apparently time is time!

As far as a dropped scene that makes everything work - what would it be? I doubt it's this, but maybe you can come up with something really interesting!

Eeep! My writer just tracked me down. I think this means I have a big meeting. I'll pop back in later.

0

I take everything back I said earlier. It's all the writer's fault. Writers are evil! :-)

Just kidding!

So, where were we?

@Growingbeautifully 25.1.2.1.2

Shifting scenes.... a reorder of the edit to give a different impression. I feel a bit like Occam's Razor right now - the simplest explanation tends to be the correct one. An editing masterpiece over multiple episode to create a new feel and undermine the previous character development seems... well... a lot of work! Probably it didn't happen.

@KDaddict?JCW 25.1.2.1.4

Interesting choice of words. Ji Sook's wearing a mask. Maybe this is what the actress is thinking for her portrayal. I think it would work better if, like Seok-Hoon, I could see the difference between when he's wearing it and when his emotions are real.

I agree - it would be nice if Ji Sook became a bit of a sadist. Seok-Hoon has far more to lose than she does!

0

@ Susan (and Everyone)
Yes, this is so much more fun than lots of things I should be doing!! *sigh* It's the end of a Monday work day for me... but I noticed that you're working on a Sunday!!

So to summarize, we viewers are at a loss as to why the spunky Ji Sook has become a limp rag. Our theories are:

1) Soo Ae with or without the Director has decided to interpret her character that way. My wild guess is that Soo Ae is acting like a person who does not know how to act like another person ie as a rich, privileged young woman ... and by doing this, is showing us Ji Sook as not wearing a mask. So maybe she is interpreting Ji Sook as one who does not want to appear more false than she has to be. This also from her interpretation of what Eun Ha wrote (that one who wears a mask will never be happy).

2) It could be the writer's fault, but it seems unlikely since the lines given to Soo Ae are quite good.

3) It could be the Director or someone in authority who is deciding how the Ji Sook character is to be played.

4) The least likely reason for this strange change in her character is that the editors took on the hard work and and lots of time to cut and or switch scenes so that we get an inexplicably dull heroine. But we don't really believe they can do this since it's usually live shoot time already.

Did I cover all the points discussed?:)

At the end of the day, we manage to close one eye, grumble a lot and still enjoy the show, I guess. :D

After spending sometime reading review I just can't take things based on their face value anymore. So many gestures...
1. When Seokhoon saw Minwoo positioned himself right next to Eun Ha he slam the laptop. Even more when Eunha spill the ginseng he gave her to the basin, he suddenly fumed and throw the laptop. That's not even pissed anymore.

AND THAT SMIRK
1. when Eunha ask Minwoo to let go, Seokhoon smirk, like he's winning something
2. When Eunha hesitated, Seokhoon simply staring at her with the smirk

If there's any other smirk that I've missed, please tell me heehehe

I dont know if anyone has mentioned this yet but if MW does find out about JS real identity ( which he will eventually) he will come to also see that the real EH is actually dead and that just maybe he actually killed her. His little world will spiral out of control and it will be up to JS to save him from self destruction. Hopefully by that point in time she will have deep, obvious feelings for him and it wont be like she is now. Shy and emotionless around MW. I think by the next 2 upcoming episodes we will see that she indeed does have feeling for him already because to be honest it's killing me to see that he is the only one expressing them.

On the topic of falling in love I seriously hope the half sister leaves that good for nothing creep and finds someone who will truly cares and loves her. She isn't evil and i'm happy to see that she really cares for MW and wants him to be happy with his wife. If she knew her real identity , she wouldn't have to be suspicious of them and could help them keep that hidden. In fact, I think she would be so much nicer and would play cupid more often so her brother could truly be happy. She would also be happier since there is no real competition-- hopefully. LOL I dream up these scenarios knowing this more than likely not going to happen until much later on in the drama. The common sense in these dramas is always terrible but Oh well that why we LOVE THEM!! see you guys Wednesday!!

This actress, Yu In-Young, seems to have been in quite many dramas and movies. Has she always only played the 2nd lead and never the main?

It's a pity if she is not given a chance to play more interesting roles. Sometimes I feel that actors/actresses are judged and limited (by directors) based on their appearance. If an actress looks like a petulant brat, she gets those kinds of roles and is the 3rd person in a love triangle. The same goes for Park Jun-Keum who plays the 'evil mum/step-mum'. She's always in these kind of roles where she appears scheming and unpleasant. (But in RL she's nice!)

for me drama should play audience emotions, if you want story that make sense and without hyperbolic than it won't be called drama..
Most drama that i love always make me smile ,cry, heart jumping, can't wait for next episode , talking to my self while watching or giggles.
I think we can't expect JS to act like we want because if she does then this drama will end just in second episodes. .
I think a drama will success if while watching or after watching people will talking about how stupid or they don't like the actresses or actors react in the situation in the drama.
this is 20 episodes drama so i believe writers , PD , and all the tim in this drama have timetable to make it good otherwise we just watching an special drama which is only needed 2 or 3 episode

I want a story that makes sense. Always. There has to be logic that is internally consistent in the universe created by the story. Exaggeration and hyperbole are fine. It can be gumihos, vampires, time-travel, fairies, whatever, and I love such fantasies btw, but you can't have the audience going, Come on, why would (s)he do such a thing?

A drama is make-believe. You have to make ppl believe, and not jerk them out of that sense of belief, then the dream-like quality of enjoyment is gone for them, and the magic trick fails.

Thank you LollyPip.

As of now, I am eager to decode Suk-hoon's latest feelings towards Ji-sook. Suk-hoon is a wise (but otherwise manipulated) man so I think he would know by now what his exact feelings for Ji-sook are. As of Min-woo, it is a given that he has fallen for her, but still remaining cautious of who she is and what her motives are. It is like he took a step forward with his right foot, and the left foot is still behind, for easier retreat.

I am excited if Suk-hoon really likes Ji-sook now. Why not a villain doing villain things to himself, just not to hurt his supposed-to-be target? That would be cool. I am enjoying the chemistry of Min-woo and Ji-sook. They pull it off greatly. And yes, also the chemistry of Suk-hoon and Ji-sook (extracted from my imagination re: what if Suk-hoon really likes (not Seo Eun-ha) Byun Ji-sook now?) Joo Ji-hoon is a charm for the first time in my life. (Mask Joo Ji-hoon wins over Goong JJH. Honestly.) Soo Ae suddenly became really likeable for me. Considering I have watched almost all her dramas. (I think I skipped just 1 drama of hers, but watched all of her dramas. Truly.)

@whitewire

Seok Hoon may start off by being in denial that he can be attracted to Ji Sook, since he knows she is not Eun Ha.

The fun part as you say, is if he gets hurt to protect her or rather that he goes all out to protect her, at his own expense and this brings to light to him and to her that his attitude towards her has changed from merely using her as a tool to a seeing her as a woman he wants to protect. I look forward to more fun wrist grabby, 'get-physically-close' scenes between these two. :)

LOL @Giegie

I felt a gentle nudge would be out of place for these 2 characters' dynamics together. More likely that she will be resistant (and we trust protesting) and he will try to be forceful. Wrist grabbing is about the most innocuous of the kinds of things he could choose to do. :)

She seems like she'll be in denial abt her feelings abt him and slow to come around. MW is going have to be patient. In ep 6 she was so awed by his violin piece. But he shook her head. She's afraid of getting too deep into this relationship. But she doesn't want to hurt MW. To him, her words sound like repeated rejection. To me she is afraid and cautious. She doesn't want to lie to him. And in keeping her distance, she is hurting his feelings and she comes off as uncaring.

With each growing episode I’ve come to love Min woo more and more. I like how initially the marriage was just for the families benefits, but MW has come to use the term “wife” and “marriage” a lot more with meaning. This really shows his effort in trying to create a proper relationship with SJ.

You know after watching Misaeng, every time I think of a big multi million dollar corporate companies I expect something to be like One International. However in these dramas it’s like yea they’re chaebol, and so rich, but its like the whole company is based in that one room. I know I’m being picky but thats just something funny I realised what was annoying me about the whole SJ & MY working from the bottom in the “company”.

When SH talked about him making the world a better place, and how the world will be better without JT, I honestly had flashbacks of Light from Deathnote. That whole delusional belief that what they’re doing is justice, so it’s justification for their actions. Arghhh these type of evil characters are like in the middle ground to me, because their intentions are good to an extent, but their actions aren’t proper. I wonder how deep we’re gonna see SH fall into his belief as we watch the show…

I love reading everyones discussion, and thanks for the recap!

@ Nessie

Yeah, I'm a sucker for stories where the reluctant spouse falls in love with the one he marries. The best part is that it's the guy who falls first this time, and is not afraid of showing it. In other cases (some dramas like Full House even Warm and Cozy), if it was the girl who fell first, she often did not have much (was not given much) that she could do, to get the guy's attention and he would be blind and/or in denial. It was very frustrating. Our OTP relationship here is such a relief.

Yh. I'm definitely a fan of when the guys falls first. Its so much more interesting and fun. It reminds me of Fated to Love You w Jang Na Ra and Ji Hyuk.

Let's all hope we start to see JS reciprocate MW's feelings in the upcoming episodes!

For those complaining about Ji-Sook's inability to put on a mask and assume the mannerisms and attitude of Seo Eun Ha, Jung Tae's death (and her brother potentially taking the fall for it) might be what prompts her to become more "believable". If you hadn't acted out so obviously and run away every time you saw him, he wouldn't have figured it out and his death wouldn't have been necessary.... Might be Suk Hoon's warped rationalization to Ji Sook.

First makjang I've watched - didn't expect it to be so addictive! Waiting every week for 2 episodes is getting torturous. Aside from the amount of car chases and scenes where Ji Sook visits her family, which I could frankly do without, the 3 main leads are putting in utterly compelling performances.

@Lill
Your speculation is close to what I mentioned somewhere else ie... that she may have to reach breaking point before we see her reacting or responding to the situation(s) she is in, in a more dynamic way.

I keep feeling that she is partially ignorant of how to wear the "Eun Ha" mask and partially averse to being so dishonest. It is coming out in this keep your head down and don't attract attention way.

I for one, didn't really have a problem with Soo Ae's portrayal of Ji Sook. Ive never seen any of her works but I get the impression that her portrayal has been strongly influenced by the directing. In any case since reading the comments I too am questioning the character. She seems so unresponsive at times. However, I do not think she is weak. All through the drama, we've seen little sparks where she has shown that she can be strong and stand despite pressure. But it is moments like those in ep 7 & 8 that make it seemed like JS is a different person. She consistently makes 'stupid' choices where he family is concerned. Still, I buy her vulnerability and hesitance. She seems like someone who is unafraid to be honest and dislikes lies. But where her family is concerned she'll do anything. That love and sacrificial spirit that she has for her family is what often times pushes her to fight back. If SH was smart he'd stop provoking her w her family. Who knows what she's capable of when it comes to them? A regular person wud have been so afraid of SH after the stunt he pulled in the beginning of ep 8 by almost driving of the cliff (?).
Anyway, in regards to MW, I believe that she is definately affected by him. Its the whole thing with the hidden identity and family debt that keeos hanging over the choices she makes. And im afraid the negative things one after another keep discouraging her from moving forward. I buy her depression. Here she is in an alien atmosphere posing as soneone she isnt w little to no one's to trust. But yh, MW has stepped up to the plate but she's unsure of him. There is alot at stake.
When she pulled back from the kiss, it wasn't immediately and she didnt really reject him. She was surprised and was probably feeling guily bc she didn't want to delve deeper into a relationship based on deceit. She wanted to tell him who she was right away. And orobably they wudve been able to progress in their relationship. Remember that scene where they're in the walk in closet and she couldn't look at hin. I think the kiss was very fresh in her mind and was just shy. Hence, she apologizes for what happened the night b4.
Considering JS's earlier kindness and tenderness for MW in the earlier eps when they had just gotten married, I think that she is just fearful and super-cautious right now. Even when he questions her, she doesn't look like she wants to lie to him. She tells him as much as possible but then closes up again. They really both need eachother. That's what im seeing. I think its these thing abt JS that makes her look inconsistent and disconnecting, not just her choices. Her portrayal and actions considering everything, can then be said to be quite complex. And I think it gives her some realness.
So Im not being judgy with her. Its still too soon. Im giving her the benefit of the doubt bc I belive she will be developed l8r. BUT writer-nim, hurry or u'll lose half ur audience!

Completely agree. I actually think Soo Ae's doing an amazing job still and think her character right now is an intentional choice by the writer and director.

The way I see it, Ji sook is a character that has no idea how to hold her head up high as Seo Eun ha because in her heart she can't completely let go of her belief in living a truthful life, even as she's already living a lie. It was already so hard for her to go along with Seok Hoon's plan up to this point and she never would have done so if she weren't threatened.

But now lying is even harder because she DOES feel attachment and affection for Min-woo. She DOES want to be someone he can trust and lean on. I actually think her pulling back from the kiss and yelling "I'm not Seo Eun Ha!" was a huge indicator that she does feel something genuine for him. If she didn't, she wouldn't have wanted to take off her mask in the heat of the moment like that. She's just not allowed to do that right now, not with the way she's being threatened and the little power she has right now to free herself.

The more real her connection with Min-woo becomes, the more the lies between them will cause her to want to draw back. That's why I definitely understand why her character would feel defeated and passive, even as I want more strength from her. I actually think this a very realistic way for a human to react.

Okay, my post above was longer than I planned. Lol. But boy, I didnt knw I had that much on my chest til I saw it. But yh, im giving the actor and character some leniency. The hand of the director and writer is so strong. I feel like our frustration is definately intentional. We r suppose to hope that she grows as a charactet after all, right? Remember, Cindy from Producer? Ppl were upset w her until later on. You just have to be patient. If she's still like this in say, ep 10, then I'll really get annoyed. But there'll orobably be major changes by then. After all, that is the half way point. Im just glad she's not being like some of Park Shin Hye's characters who cry all through the show. Im so sick of those candy characters. Stop being so weak, woman!
But with JS, I can understand her turmoil. And the writet gives us just enough moments of strength to knw that she's capable of fighting.

Join the club. :)
Believe it or not, most of the time I start off intending to write just a few remarks...low and behold by the end, my key points have turned into paragraphs. At that point, (to the guilt) I say screw it or either just go with the flow.

So its official. The writer is making the character frustratingly passive on purpose. In ep 6 he got so frustrated with her moping and complaining. And that's when he threw down her clothes in her closet. And then when he goes for a drive with Chang Soo, he vents abt hw annoying her behavior makes him. That line clearly showed how worried he was for her. And he totally expressed the audience's sentiments. There's hope for her yet then!

Waiting for Wednesdays and Thursdays (and subbed episodes) has been making me claw the walls. I decided to watch The Secret so I could maintain my sanity. I might have a nervous breakdown before the 20 episodes end. Ugh.

I just want to review ep 9 since I find it to be extremely frustrating. EP 9 seems to be ridiculous, stupid, and heart wrenching for the audience to watch. Either the writer BUCK UP, or I AM LEAVING THIS DRAMA.
