Name That Drama: A daughter-in-law contest and a witch doctor

It’s Name That Drama again! As always, feel free to email us your questions and requests for future Name That Drama installments.

  1. Competing for daughter-in-law rights:

I saw this drama in 2010s. I just remember one scene but cannot remember the drama’s name. The main actor’s father puts on a competition for his future daughter-in-law. The heroine also participates and the competition had rounds like a physical test, cooking, etc. The father supports one girl and the hero and the secretory supports our heroine. Please help me in finding out the drama. Thank you.

  2. Threesome and a gloomy day:

So I once watched a drama (or movie, because the scene I remember was bleak ‘n gloomy) and I wanted to watch it again but I forgot the title.

There were three people — two men, one woman in their 20s, I think. The woman and one of the men were lovers. One day that man disappeared. The woman thought he was dead. The other man was actually evil and jealous of his friend.

The other detail I remember are: a book, library, old picture of the three of them, old abandoned railway station. I watched it not long ago but I don’t know whether it is an old or new drama. I tend to watch 2-3 new dramas and some old dramas or movies as filler in a week. Thanks in advance.

  3. A whistling mute:

Hi! I have the vaguest plot description sorry >.< I watched a commercial for this a few years back, definitely Asian but not sure if Korean/Chinese. I think it was a movie instead of a drama series. A guy was on the pavement and he blew a whistle to catch the female's attention with the implication that he's a mute ... Yeah that's all I have. 😡 Thanks in advance all you awesome beanies! (:

  4. Step-family crazies:

I only watched the latter half of the drama so I don’t know the whole details but the main girl’s dad remarried(?) and the stepmum has a daughter (around the same age as the main girl I think). The two step-siblings like the same guy but of course the guy likes the main girl. The stepmum/daughter enlisted the help of some witch doctor to put some spell(?) on the main guy so he will like for the stepsister. After that the main girl got engaged to her ex-boyfriend who is a jerk. The stepmum also got the witch doctor to curse the dad to be disabled (can’t speak or walk). The witch doctor and the stepmum also have an affair (although unknown to the mum he also has his eye on the stepdaughter).

I think at the end someone got shot, but I don’t remember who. I remember the ex-boyfriend turning into a good guy though, but got shot by someone. Hope someone can help!

  5. Cancer mom and a bully:

Hi, I watched this special drama on KBS World recently but the title onscreen was so tiny I can’t read it, and I regret that I stopped watching after a part. Could you help me find it?

The scene that I watched has a middle school girl coming home to her mother preparing to go out. The mother is wearing a beanie, so she probably has cancer or something. The mother asks her to come to the public bath because the therapy jeopardizes their quality time, but the girl refuses with all kinds of excuses. The girl finally snaps angrily and the mother leaves without her. Turns out she refused because of her bleeding foot. The girl’s shoes are too small already so when another girl bullied her at school by stomping on her foot, she cried in pain and her thumb starts to bleed. That’s it. Hope you could help me.

  6. Raining and stranded:

When I was in the Philippines, I remembered seeing a few scenes from a Korean drama and now I really want to see it again. But, for the life of me, I cannot figure what it is. I don’t watch a lot of Korean dramas, so I am just clueless on where to begin. I only remember two scenes. The first, where the main girl’s car dies in the middle of the road and it’s raining really hard. The main guy (?) goes out looking for her and finds her car, but she’s not around. Then he sees her in the car with another guy and he gets mad at her and walks off with his bike limping. In the second scene, the main guy is building some kind of birdhouse or something.

Sorry! I know it’s a long shot, but those are the only scenes I remember. I can’t remember anything else! Please help! Thank you so much!

Thanks for playing, everyone — till next time!

I think number 6 is Save the Last Dance for Me. Try googling Ji Sung and Eugene. That part sounds like the early bits of the drama. My memory is a bit foggy as I watched it eons ago so I could be wrong haha

Number 4 sounded like Cinderella's Stepsister at first before it turned into Moon Embracing the Sun. That is a whole lot of crazy lolz

I think #3 is Silent. ...starring Vic zhu...it was a Taiwanese drama. Vic Zhu plays a mute man. Can't remember the heroine though. For the life of me...can't remember the plot too...watched this ages ago. Just remembered the mute and whistling thingy.

Actually in the TW drama Silence, Vic Zhou's character met the heroine when they were young at the hospital. The heroine was in the hospital cause of a bus accident (she ended up traumatized and became mute) and Vic's character was there from an injury at a swim meet. They became close and when he left the hospital, he gave her his phone call. No matter how much he waited, she never called (cause she was mute). He never changed his number though hoping for her to call. The story continues many years later where they are both adults. He is intrigued by her because she reminds him of his friend from many years ago. I don't remember the pavement scene, but I remember the majority of the drama.

Actually, the mute one is the heroine, played by Park Eun-hye. This drama is one of my favorite TW-drama btw (mainly because of Vic :D).

Now that I've thought about it, it kind of fits. With the older generation of "reporters," the library, camera in the book, photo of the five friends, and the abandoned place where Healer lives.

Number 5 is SOS- Save our School starring Jung Woong-in, Seo Shin-ae. It has two episodes rather than the typical one for drama specials. It's a good one that I recommend, so I'm glad to see it here. Drama specials need more love :)

#2 sonds a lot like Healer (Moon-ho's older brother and his sick, former-reporter wife -- forgot many of the names, sorry). The railway bit and the other details fit, too.

@Mina ... Wow! you're the 2nd person to say this!!! Well, maybe .... yes.... when we put together different scenes, although the 'abandoned' description of the railway totally puts me on a another track and only 3 people in the photo or is it that all 3 are in a photo (which could have more people....) LOL! I didn't think it could be Healer.... but yeah, maybe now then it could!

So I take back what I said in Comment 9.1 above about No. 2 not being Healer!!!

But the Vote for Fave Healer ... Awards game that I mentioned above is true. :) That will be on.

#3 could be HK drama called Return of the Cuckoo. The main guy character is mute and he does use a whistle to communicate and also sign language. His best friend/childhood buddy is the main female character. Really cute guy and he is still cute today Julian Cheung. It was quite sad in the end though.

Number 4 sounds like a telenovela(telemundo anyone) or a Nigerian movie they are the ones that use witches.I've only seen witches /shaman in moon embracing the sun and jeon woo chi.Ja myung go has a seer that sleeps with the kings second wife that's as close to the similarity as it gets.

I think #5 is Superdaddy Yeol! There is definitely the cancer and I remember the shoe thing - her feet were different sizes but she felt so sorry to her mom she decided to quit track instead of make her feel bad. Stepdad Yeol is a physical therapist so he figures it out.

kamen is right; there are a lot of other differences. For one Superdaddy Yeol isn't a special, the daughter is clearly in middle school, and the mom doesn't outwardly show her cancer (no beanie). I had to double check for a second there though.

Wooh, first time to comment (≧∇≦) for #2, I don't think it's Healer (sort of memorize 60% of the show...hehehe). I don't recall seeing a photo of 3 people on the show. Only 5 or 6 people, the bad guy, the Teacher, the two friends (I think, or at least one other friend), and the mom of the main girl.

Oh correction. Lol. Sorry. The people on the group photo in Healer are the following:

The other bad guy (older bro of 2nd main guy and 2nd husband of mom of main girl)
Healer's teacher
Mom of the main girl
Dad of main girl (first husband of mom of main girl)
And another friend (I think).

And the one who took the photo is the 2nd main guy (the famous reporter)

Reading #2 I'm pretty sure that it's NOT Healer. While the 3 people in question does sound a lot like the parent's story, but then where would the "book", " library" or "old abandon railway station" come from?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I was thrown off by the abandoned railway station... but the book could be the Healer book in the box/trunk that Moon Ho kept. The library could be Chae Chi Soo's lawyer's office shelves, where Park Bong Soo remarked there were so many books.

The abandoned place was a junk yard and not a train station... and the train was in a tunnel but it was not abandoned. But if memory is a little uncertain, it's possible that two different scenes were linked.

Good thinking with the Healer book. My first thought was that it was the book Moon-ho had secretly put a camera in in his brother's library. For the abandoned railway station I thought of Jeong-hoo's warehouse.

I think #2 is Equator Man...but not sure since I never got to watch many or read the recaps. But from what I know about the story of Equator Man, the whole friend-is-evil-and-jealous-of-the-other-guy & the whole guy-was-believed-to-be-dead-but-is-actually-alive...they fit, and that both guys like the main girl...the picture, not sure about it, as well as the book and railway...the library, maybe the study room or office of 2nd main guy (the evil dude) because he's a prosecutor?

It was the first drama that popped in my head when I read #2 :) but again, not sure =P

Yeah but their age doesn't add up. UTW's character disappeared when they were all still teenagers. They did reunite as adults. It's likely that they had a picture taken of the three of them, they were best friends before fate decided to strike them...
I finished the drama, but it's not one I'd re-watch...

But I recall that UTW and LBY's characters met after UTW's younger version disappeared from the bad guy's life? By then they were already adults, with UTW blind. And then because I didn't follow the drama, the next thing I saw after watching another episode by chance weeks later is time skip I think, and UTW comes back pretending to be blind still, but already super rich, but he can already see ...but again, because I did not follow it, I don't know if UTW left suddenly causing LBY's character and the audience to think he died.
