SBS’s Yong-pal loses actors, considers adding Jo Hyun-jae

Erm, should I be worried about you, Yong-pal? Why all the pre-drama shuffling?

On the heels of the recent director switch, the SBS drama has parted ways with two of its supporting cast members, Oh Jung-se (The Lover, Plus Nine Boys) and Jo Jae-yoon (Liar Game). Interesting that the show had been so adamant that losing one director (PD Lee Dong-hoon of God’s Gift—14 Days) for another (PD Oh Jin-seok of Modern Farmer, Goddess of Marriage) would in no way affect the casting or production schedule, only to have two people leaving the project.

On the upside, one of those roles already has a replacement lined up: Jo Hyun-jae (Ad Genius Lee Tae-baek, 49 Days) has received the offer and is considering joining the drama. Oddly, he’s up for the same role that Oh Jung-se just left behind—I say odd since those two actors are hardly similar types, with totally different images. Then again, maybe the new director has a new take on the story and wants to cast differently. Or, perhaps the two supporting actors had agreed to the project because of the director, and no longer feel inclined to stay. Both are well-liked and well-received actors who always put in fine performances as side characters, so I can see them choosing based on creative decisions, which may have changed with the recent shake-up. But that’s just speculation, since there’s not much explanation to go on.

In any case, Jo Hyun-jae’s proposed role would be of Kim Tae-hee’s brother, also Chae Jung-ahn’s husband. (I take it we’ll all just brush aside the memory of them playing lovers in 2004’s fantasy-action drama Tale of the Nine-Tailed Fox?) Kim Tae-hee’s chaebol heiress character stands first in the inheritance line, but has been lying in a coma in a hospital as a result of some nefarious meddling. She awakens suddenly and vows to get back at those who put her there, as well she should.

Jo Jae-yoon’s now-departed role was of a gangster boss (of course—the guy is made to play gangsters) whom Joo-won encounters when making one of his house calls. “Yong-pal” is the code name he uses in taking on those jobs for clients who can’t, for one reason or another, get medical care through proper channels or call police for help.

Yong-pal is holding its first script reading this week; it fills the Wednesday-Thursday SBS slot following Mask, and premieres in August.

Agree. Have people forgotten already what happened to Ad Genius and how upset his fans were when he took that second lead role?

I want to see him in a new drama very badly but I don't feel excited for this drama. I hope he passes this one and wait for a better one if he wants to change his image. No more second lead role. CHEBAL!

I dunno, it's really a no-no for me to have him playing second fiddle when he once romanced the leading lady onscreen. Awkward.

Ughhh I love Jo Hyun-jae, and have been longing to see him in another good project ever since 49 Days. But at this point this drama isn't exactly inspiring faith... also as cute as Joo-won is, JHJ is way better than second lead. :(

SBS dramas are such a mess lately. But I suppose if the drama has a new PD, that also means a new vision for how the story is going to be handled. I'm interested to see how this will turn out.

how about make Chae Jung-ahn as Kim Tae Hee's sister and Jo Hyun-jae is her husband who doesnt love her, coz he's still love his ex-lover which is her sister, Kim Tae Hee but married her out of greed. He also expect KTH will never wake up again from her coma. Once KTH woke up from her coma, she will get back at those who put her there and ofc revenge to her ex-lover who married her sister.

( it may reminiscing their past romance in the past drama a little bit.., although they will still not end up together again).. leuls. *myimagination

even KTH and JW also dont end up together, im not really mind. coz i dont expect deep romance between the main leads and i cant really ship them..

but dunno, this is only my thought. kkk.. hope the story line going well.

It such a waste to lose two talented actors but Jo Hyun Jae I love him so I don't have any complains but I can't just picture out Kim Tae Hee and Jo Hyun Jae as brother and sister..Back when I was in grade 4 I watched Forbidden Love and it was the first Korean Drama that I fell in Love with and the first drama that made me cry. Also Jo Hyun Jae and Kim Tae Hee were the first actor and actress i love and ship in real life and I always dreaming of them to reunite in the future but now as brother and sister idk how to react but I'm very happy to see Joo Won,Kim Tae Hee and Jo Hyun Jae together..

I was and still am disappointed that Oh Jung Se and Jo Jae Yoon are out. But it's been a long time since I saw Jo Hyun Jae in 49 Days. If he confirms, I will be interested to see how he plays a two face baddie. I can't imagine an ounce of evil on this man's angelic face so it's gonna to be a stretch.

Still, all these changes and rumors are disturbing. First, a rumor had it that Kim Tae Hee added a "wedding" clause when she signed on for this project, to which her agency flatly denied. Then rumor of it being postponed because of MERS since some filming has to take place in hospital. And finally, the ones this past week of conflict with actors and filming schedule. I do not know what made PD Lee and the two actors dropped this but I sure hope it has nothing to do with the quality of the story and the direction.

Seriously Jo Hyun-jae is super duper hot. I am frustrated as why does dramaland ignore such a hottie. I have seen his recent pictures, and the same beautiful face and waaaaarm charisma I felt in Forbidden Love and Only You. Oh please give the hottie a starring role in a drama. I really miss him now. Give him another rom-com. I miss him. I miss him badly. He deserves it, man.

I cannot accept anymore 2nd lead for Jo Hyun-jae. As much as I enjoyed Ad Genius Lee Tae-baek (seriously that drama put my advertising, copywriting and marketing skills to a top-notch, and I still benefit from the great skils today), Jo Hyun-jae deserves a leading man role. He is tailored to be a charming leading man. If it is Jo Hyun-jae, it is never a crime to be a chaebol. Using the common chaebol route looks glamorous and gold if it will be Jo Hyun-jae who will star in it. That is how he is made. (And also an easy way to divide the classic drama watchers and the new korean wave drama addicts)

PS: WHY did they ever use the reunion of Jo Hyun-jae and Han Chae-young in a drama where they're both second leads? Why dramaland? Why KBS-2?

Sigh I can write 3 more paragraphs just to emphasize my love for Jo Hyun-jae. Lol. I was once a hater but now I miss him. Ok I will stop while I can. This looks like spamming coz this is my 3rd comment. If this message will reach dramaland, please let Jo Hyun-jae be a leading man again. Sincerely, whitewire

Reading JHJ"s fans' lamentations on him being 2nd lead makes me ponder - will an actor who has always or often been the lead actor want to be 2nd lead just to change his image or play the antagonist?

Most of the time, the antagonist is the 2nd lead but I think this matter less if his character is very important to the story, challenges the actor's acting and is well written. If my favorite actor takes up such a role and does well, I would be more than glad. I can't tell if the role offered to JHJ fits this description so I guess his fans have a cause to be irked. His role in Ad Genius was an example of a 2nd lead role which did not fulfill these criteria.

Joo Won has already played characters who are less than good but not yet one who is outright evil or irredeemable to the very end. If one day, he dares to take a role as such, I will say bring it on even if he's not going to be the lead. But then again.are there any leading actors who have done so?

I love JHJ, but I hope he doesn't take this role... I would like to see him in a leading role in another sageuk drama. I loved him in Song of the Prince and The King's Daughter. I've been waiting for his comeback, but hopefully it's not going to be this one....

I like Jo hyun Jae and a second role even is a villain, can be much enjoyable than a lead role. For example, Mishil from "Queen Seondeok" was brilliant. I just wait to see this drama.
