Taecyeon offered political drama Assembly, Ji Jin-hee leaves

KBS’s upcoming political drama Assembly, about a working-class man who gets elected to the National Assembly, has locked down its leads in Jung Jae-young (Fatal Encounter) and Song Yoon-ah (Mama), and is now adding supporting cast members. Ok Taecyeon (Three Meals a Day, Wonderful Season) is currently weighing an offer to join the cast as a police officer hopeful, while Ji Jin-hee (Blood) has sadly bowed out of the production.

The new drama from the writer of Jung Do-jeon tells the underdog success story of a welder who comes to represent the working man in the National Assembly. Jung Jae-young plays a naive new politician with big dreams and no experience, and learns just how difficult it is to effect change in government. Song Yoon-ah plays his smart, experienced aide who will help him learn the ropes.

Jin Jin-hee was considering a role as Jung Jae-young’s main political rival, the majority party leader in the assembly. It’s too bad that he passed on the role, but Ji Jin-hee is currently looking at the new weekend drama I Have a Lover opposite Kim Hyun-joo for SBS, so he’ll be back in a drama either way.

Taecyeon is being courted to play a young man who graduated from a small college in a small town, and has failed to land a salaried job at every major company he’s applied to. He’s got bottom-of-the-barrel credentials, and decides to change course by studying to become a police officer. He’s a dogged, studious type, who spends his days in the library and his nights as a designated driver.

Really, Taec as a guy who spends all day in the library? [What?! Who’s gonna believe that? –javabeans] Okaaay, but you’re really setting yourself up for an uphill battle on this one. If his character ends up in politics (I can see him somehow ending up a part of the underdog team), I don’t know how they’re going to sell it. All I can say is, it’s a good thing Taec is so likable in real life.

Other new cast additions include Kim Seo-hyung (History of the Salaryman) as a member of the assembly, and Misaeng’s Tae In-ho (he was Byun Yo-han’s terrible assistant manager) as Jung Jae-young’s secretary.

Assembly follows Masked Prosecutor and premieres July 15.

hmm, I was wishing for Taecyeon to have a role in a kdrama this year bu this one is a bit ..I don't know not up his alley, I guess. maybe something like a rom com even just a 2nd lead role if the lead role is too much to ask. I'd just like to see his face and he can handle that kind of role. He ain't that bad in acting and what a waste of great abs.

Good for him! The future belongs to those who prepare for it today, as Malcolm X said. I really really hope he majors in something other than theatre; he might be a talented architect or a superb accountant or a great manager after his singing career. Because let's face it, he will never be a decent actor.

Well, he's attending the graduate school of International studies; studying International Business Administration. Is that good enough?
He may not be an excellent actor but there was no need to assume he was dumb or not credible as a "study type".

A person's image doesn't necessarily reflect their actual personality/traits. He may be quite studious in real life, but that is not the vibe he gives off in dramas. I hope if he ends up in this drama that it will help him to develop his range more, but as of right now he has yet to exude any kind of book-learnin' scholar vibe. (again, strictly in his acting performances).

He is not dumb at all. But he has gotten in trouble before for not attending class. In 2012 he was humiliated by a professor and made to stand in front of the class because he had not attended classes and showed up to take a test. In 2013 it was revealed that he had not attended classes for most of the semester. This made people criticize him because he had a spot at a prestigious university, but was not attending classes because of his schedule. A lot of people said he should have allowed another person to take that spot. I really hope that during the last two years he has learned his lesson and taken advantage of the opportunity to educate himself.

It could be worse, though - he could be the lead. Thank god for small mercies.

He's just not actor material at all, he should stick to variety shows.

What a downgrade :(. I was so happy that Jung Jae-young is finally going to be in a drama opposite a capable actor like Ji Jin-hee and this is his replacement?

I'm so disappointed.

You are probably right. So far they have solid movie actors as leads and a solid writer. I hope they'll get a really good actor to play the other political party leader. Someone like Han Suk-Kyu or Ryu Seung-ryong.

Hmm... i dun think he'll have a problem as a studious guy..i mean..i heard he's active in the chess club..a member of the national honor society back in the US. he studied business admin at dankook uni and now studying international relations. so, he's kinda perfect for the role..

A variety show really do wonder with celebrity's public image. Never thought that'll have this soft spot for taecyeon, however after watching him in 3 meals a day, I just can't but adore him so much like a puppy or kitten.

I think after this, no matter how bad his acting is, I'll just see it with those rose colour tinted glasses of adoration. Lol.

Taecyeon currently is a graduate student at this moment attending Korea University. Remember in Season 1 where he bring his notes to read but sleep instead.

At least I can see him wearing suit again. KBS must like him since he appeared in Wonderful Days last year. Anyway this is such a good opportunity for him to act with a great actor just like his last drama.

I can actually see him spending time in library...
This is a very wrong idea that the nerdy/studious/smart type people do not care about their appearance...

The way movies portrays a top college student or a smart guy with ragged cloth, being silly with no idea of the world, I find it hilarious.

people who excel at studies tend to excel at everything else including appearance ? Sorry but that's real life.

To me he always looked a bit studious type naturally specially if you see him in the Real 2PM videos wearing glasses :)

I loved your comment and I hate to ruin it for you. But no, nerds do look like Mark Zuckerberg and don't have six-packs (usually because they spent their days studying seated on a chair and have no time to go to gym, six-packs need endless hours of exercising) and glasses are not a sign of sophistication, it's simply a sign of myopia (for which there is laser treatment) or some other inoperable eye condition.

I hate to ruin it for you, but he is a nerd. Aside from having seriously bad myopia, Taecyeon was in honors society and chess club at his school back in America, and he's now a graduate student at Korea University after completing his bachelor's while being an idol.

I wouldn't call myself a big fan of his acting and singing, but I do admire him for being so hardworking.

(Also, nerds can still go to the gym if they have good time management.)

Reaallyyy? Brain-looks combo? Since I don't know a single "nerd" with outstanding academic achievements and idol looks, I would very much like to be the usual transferred student to those universities. All I can see is Caucasians,Africans and Asians who are geniuses (of course!) but at the same time are either too tall or too short, too fat or too thin(way too thin!). They're MENSA members but not idol-group members whatsoever. Where have the stunning looking geniuses been bred? And if they're not athletes since childhood (and gazillions hours of training behind those gorgeous bodies), how on earth do they make time for the gym? Really, which gym?

Required fields are marked *

They're not MENSA members but I know plenty of guys that are in successful careers that require intelligence (all post graduate degrees in the medical and law field) that are attractive enough to rival some Asian idols/actors and have amazing bodies because just about every guy in socal is into fitness. I also know guys whom visually looked "nerdy" and "scrawny" but after college, they started bulking up and MAN, do I regret turning some of them down. Think of Taec and TOP prior to their trainee life. They weren't this attractive then. Weight, hair, nice clothes (and BB cream lol) can make a world of difference. And just because someone's attractive doesn't mean they aren't capable of talking to you about what the theory of relativity is or they don't play video games for hours on end screeching like a lunatic behind closed doors. Don't judge a book by it's cover. Nerd by definition isn't someone unattractive but descriptive as to one's personality who is overly intellectual, obsessive, or socially impaired. If you haven't met one yet that meets both, you haven't met enough people.

0

As someone who is part of the Columbia class of 2019 facebook page (even though I chose a different school)...I'm going to go with nerds can have idol looks? Especially with the makeup that idols use?

0

May be you didn't get a chance to see enough of those with high academic achievements ? That will solve the mystery. I am not trying to offend you or anything but I do talk from experience.
I graduated from a top program in one of the top universities in the world and I am drawing examples from my classmates many of whom had excellent time management skills and went to the Gym regularly(they are very smart mind you).
Not saying there weren't any that weren't the typical nerd type from your stereotypes, however a fair share was really like someone mentioned a brain-look combo.

(Please I am not bragging or anything, just trying to explain to you where I am coming from/defend my stance)

Some news that will teach you how much of a nerd and studious-type Taec is despite his sweet-dumb-straight personality:

http://www.soompi.com/2013/02/26/taecyeon-is-accepted-into-prestigious-korea-university-as-grad-student/

http://www.soompi.com/2012/10/24/2pms-taecyeon-receives-perfect-score-on-toeic-exam/

http://www.soompi.com/2013/03/17/2pms-taecyeon-is-one-hot-nerd/

It is true that he doesn't go to class that often because he allways has a hectic schedule and he can't go. When he lived in Boston he even joined the Chess Club, Jazz Band, JV Soccer Team and National Honor Society... he was a nerd xD

On top of that he is a hardworking man with all his personal and groupal schedules full all the year working as MC, CF, being cast on variety shows, films, dramas... he is even producing his own songs too!

And he had to endure a lot of years (5 YEARS) of continuous hate on top of all that. Even giving up is green card in order to go to the ARMY later didn't do anything. God bless "3 meals a Day" and Na PD because people are finally seeing his true self and they are loving it.

But yeah, I guess he doesn't seem the studious type...

You are not alone. I am ecstatic that Jung Jae-young is finally going to be in a drama after staring in almost 40 movies.

This is drama land, most people are not familiar with him just like when Jo Seung‑woo made his drama debut. I felt like I was the only one that was so excited about it lol.

Drama land is in for a treat :). Jae-young is amazing on screen, whether he is acting, doing interviews etc. He is quick witted, charismatic and hilarious.

Yes,you're right! It's sacrilegious for all the rest of us NOT to talk about JJY's very first drama and instead to keep on debating about Taec's academic achivements. I feel a bit (or more than that) ashamed.
I don't know how KBS has lured him into a TV project, while the ratings-flop "demonl" is still on the loose; nevertheless, I keep my fingers crossed that this project gets a proper scenario and a reasonable - at the very least - plot to accompany its outstanding cast. JJY's career and acting level surely deserve the best.

It's better than some bum who sits all day watching dramas and workout videos willing herself to a six-pack,Omo,I'm describing myself.
