I Remember You: Episode 12

The confrontation we’ve all been waiting for takes place at long last, and it’s one doozy of a reunion. Grab your tissues and brace yourself, because it’s gonna rip your heart out, in the very best possible way. At the very least, it’s a step forward for Hyun on several interpersonal (and personal) fronts, as he learns that he doesn’t have to weather every crisis alone. Confiding in others, and being protected, is perhaps not that big of a deal after all.

EPISODE 12: “If I had to kill somebody…”

As Lawyer Jung promises to “remember” the neglected and bullied student Yong-jae (aka seek revenge), Yong-jae’s mom finds the picture of a radio with the number six, left in the family’s mailbox. Hesitating for the umpteenth time over the envelope, Hyun thinks back to the numerous times Lawyer Jung initiated casual conversation, pondering the possibility of him being Min.

Ji-an reviews the tapes of the interrogation of Yong-jae’s family, as well as the CCTV of Yong-jae getting beaten up. One thing stands out to her: The unidentified witness and Yong-jae clearly made eye contact during the assault.

Settling down in his home basement,  Hyun bucks up enough courage to finally open the envelope of truth.  He chooses to first look through the records of the murdered victims, who all have the common characteristic of having abandoned someone. Registering that fact, he comes to a shocking realization: Through killing the other victims, Min was repeatedly “killing” Hyun, who likewise abandoned him.

Eventually, he turns over the picture of the supposed murderer, and the identity of Min is confirmed to be Lawyer Jung. The cards are finally all laid out on the table. With the truth slowly sinking in, Hyun pounds his chest in a mix of heartbreak and anguish, as tears spring to his eyes.

Lawyer Jung heads out in his “murderer outfit,” as Hyun remembers Lawyer Jung’s defense of Yong-jae’s family. It hits Hyun that Lawyer Jung intends to finish off Yong-jae’s family, and immediately rushes out to stop him. Multiple calls to Lawyer Jung go unanswered, and now, it’s a race against time.

Hyun makes it to Yong-jae’s house, but nobody’s home. All he finds is the picture of the radio, left under the door. He makes a call to Indebted Friend, and requests for the list of addresses that he found during the background checks. Next, he calls Ji-an, and gets her to contact Yong-jae’s parents.

His subsequent stop is Lawyer Jung’s studio, where he discovers Lawyer Jung’s wealth of double-headed art pieces. As he recalls Min’s similar childhood drawings, we finally get the mini-family reunion as Lawyer Jung appears behind Hyun. Hyun slowly turns around, and the look he has on his face when he sees Little Bro just about kills me.

Hyun confirms Lawyer Jung’s identity, and tearfully apologizes for being too late. In contrast, Lawyer Jung is unmoved, and with his poker face still intact, he stoically agrees that it is in fact, too late. Hyun grabs Lawyer Jung’s hand to check for injuries, although Lawyer Jung assumes Hyun’s looking for remnants of bloodstains.

Lawyer Jung asks Hyun to get to the point, and judging by the way Hyun asks about Yong-jae’s family, he’s practically pleading with Lawyer Jung to deny any involvement, since Yong-jae’s family is not worth Lawyer Jung being destroyed over. Upset, Min angrily questions: “What if I’m already destroyed? If I was already destroyed the moment you abandoned me, what are you going to do?” Voice cracking, Hyun ekes out, “I never abandoned you.”

Flaring up, Lawyer Jung accuses Hyun of not looking for him, and not recognizing him. He cuts off Hyun’s explanation, asking if Hyun wished he was dead. It’s a really heart-breaking and teary scene for both brothers — Lawyer Jung’s resentment that hyung didn’t recognize him, and Hyun’s disappointment in himself for failing his younger brother.

Grabbing Hyun’s collar, Lawyer Jung’s voice hardens and he blames Hyun for sending him to Joon-young. Hyun’s shocked that he would even think that way, although Lawyer Jung’s evidence is that Hyun betrayed Min to Joon-young. Little Hyun had promised Min to keep it a secret, but when little Hyun met Joon-young, he revealed that the real monster is actually Min.

Hyun’s silence confirms Lawyer Jung’s conclusion that Hyun did in fact spill the beans to Joon-young. Just then, a phone call arrives for Hyun, and Ji-an reports the good news that she just saw Yong-jae’s parents entering their house, and has requested extra security for them. Both brothers know what this means, and Lawyer Jung just says that he wasn’t in the mood today.

Hyun offers himself up for Lawyer Jung to kill, since he’s the real target that Lawyer Jung is after, and Lawyer Jung calmly affirms that statement. As Hyun leaves, both brothers break down and let out their suppressed sobs. Oof oof.

Ji-an arrives back home, ready to bug Hyun about the night’s happenings, but something about Hyun’s demeanor convinces her to let the issue rest for the night. Hyun falls asleep on his desk, as he dreams of little Min burying something beneath a tree. Suddenly, Lawyer Jung replaces the image of Min, and now, there’s a dead body on the ground. He jolts awake, and Ji-an is already next to him, sleep-comforting him and patting his hand. He smiles at the sight of her dozing off, and catches her before she crashes onto the table.

He confirms that she’s sleeping, before spilling his worries about Min being a murderer. He starts to ask about a hypothetical situation where he runs away, but doesn’t complete his question. Giving her sleeping figure a final smile, he walks away, and Ji-an opens her eyes, having heard everything he said.

Meanwhile, an unidentified man looks at a photo of Hyun.

Joon-ho visits Lawyer Jung, and notes that he didn’t “handle” Yong-jae’s parents. Lawyer Jung says he didn’t feel like it, and poses two questions to Joon-ho: Did Hyun really abandon him? And why was he left with Joon-ho? Joon-ho merely replies that it was the convenient solution for all of them.

Over breakfast, Ji-an admits that she heard Hyun’s confession about Min. She knows that Hyun said it while she was sleeping, fully aware of the possibility that she could be awake. She prods him to come clean with her, but Hyun tries to brush it aside as a dream she had.

Refusing to let him sweep it under the rug, she says that she was enduring it all this time, waiting patiently for him to take the initiative. He suggests for her to continue waiting, but she can no longer do so, since she can’t un-hear his revelation. Ji-an’s unsure how exactly she can help, but one thing she’s sure of is that Hyun can’t handle it on his own.

Hyun wants to know if she’s coming from the standpoint of a police officer, but Ji-an says that she will hear it as a friend if he tells her. But soon, she will have to wear the hat of the police — so she wants to hear him out as Cha Ji-an before it comes to that. Moved by her sincerity, he confides in her: He has found Min, who was kidnapped by Joon-young, and has possibly become a murderer. Baby steps.

Eun-bok has managed to identify the witness of Yong-jae’s attack from the CCTV, and it’s revealed to be his mother. Due to her negligence, Yong-jae died of assault, and she’s arrested under the charge of abuse.

Ji-an mulls over Hyun’s words, and we go back to their conversation in the house. Hyun refuses to divulge Min’s identity, although he does enlighten her that Joon-young is “nearby.” He lets her listen to Joon-young’s tape recordings, and she has nothing but swear words to throw at Joon-young. She’s shaken up, but more so due to her anger that Hyun was locked up in this basement at such a young age.

Hyun reasons that if Dad had found out about Min’s psychopathic tendencies, Min would have been the one locked up instead. Hyun had tried his hardest to protect Min, but he made a mistake in spilling the beans to Joon-young. He laments all the what-ifs, and regrets not keeping Min’s secret, which might have prevented Min from turning out this way.

Ji-an’s heart goes out to Hyun and she envelops him in a long hug. Gazing at each other in understanding, Hyun sincerely whispers, “Thank you, Cha Ji-an.” And then he gently holds her face and plants a soft kiss on her forehead. Swoon.

Hyun appears at Lawyer Jung’s studio, and at Lawyer Jung’s annoyance, Hyun puts on a bright smile and teases that he’s going to do this more often. Lawyer Jung assumes that Hyun is trying to redeem himself, and Hyun doesn’t deny it. His tone turning serious, Hyun asks for a promise from Lawyer Jung: If he ever wants to kill someone, it has to be Hyun, and not anyone else.

Another letter arrives for Hyun, and Myung-woo is annoyed that he has to play delivery boy again. He throws the envelope onto Hyun’s table, and photos of a body impaled with a metal stick slip out of the envelope. Seung-joo is sent to chase down the delivery man, although he’s already nowhere to be found.

Along with the photos, there’s a Bible verse about how sons will have to pay the price for their fathers’ sins, indicating a likely motive of revenge. Eun-bok contributes helpfully that Hyun’s father was a psychologist for the police, and they start looking into recently released inmates who were arrested by Hyun’s father.

Joon-ho asks if Lawyer Jung wants to reconcile with Hyun, and states that it’s actually not a bad idea, although he was initially against it. Lawyer Jung shoots Joon-ho a pensive look, as Joon-ho receives a phone call from the police. His happy smile at the arrival of a new case is terribly unnerving.

The team and Joon-ho head down to the crime scene, where the victim is an unidentified homeless man, and Joon-ho proposes that the homeless man is merely a sacrificial lamb for an intended target. Team Leader Kang lets slip that this case was delivered personally to Hyun as a possible threat, and Joon-ho takes in this interesting tidbit of information, while noticing Hyun’s absence.

Turns out he’s with Ji-an at home, where she’s starting to be suspicious of everyone’s identities. She pleads with Hyun to divulge Min’s identity, and promises to keep quiet about it. If she discovers his identity on her own, she will have no choice but to investigate it as a detective.

He asks her a serious question: What if someone who was killed deserved to die? Her answer is that no one has the right to kill another, or the right to judge who deserves to live. Myung-woo calls to inform her of the new murder case as well as the threatening letter to Hyun. But when she conveys the news to Hyun, he just deadpans, oh, really?

He slumps back into his chair, and Ji-an shakes him, likening him to a “150-year-old grandfather.” She fails to pry him off his chair, but somehow succeeds by pulling him along with a handhold. Ha.

The team has found a likely suspect in Jo Yong-woo, who was a professional killer and boss of the nationwide mafia 20 years ago when Hyun’s dad arrested him. Hyun’s opinion is that the motive is rather weak, if the murderer intended to take revenge on the son after such a long time. He chuckles that he’s just added one more person to the list of people who want him dead, and Team Leader Kang is shocked that there are multiple people after Hyun’s life.

Convinced that there must be another motive, Hyun commands the team to dig up more information from local news publications, which tend to be more detailed. The team is surprised that Hyun’s so nonplussed, considering that it’s his neck on the line. Ji-an chases after him to implore him to stay safe, even going as far as to promise to protect him, which earns her a smirk from Hyun.

Hyun drops by Lawyer Jung’s studio again, and doesn’t elaborate on his relief that Lawyer Jung didn’t grow up as Dad’s son (as he would have been targeted by the threats as well). He invites Lawyer Jung out for all sorts of bonding activities, which Lawyer Jung promptly turns down, although I would add that Lawyer Jung seems to be walking in time with Hyun’s footsteps.

Joon-ho digs up Dad’s diary and turns to an old news article with the headlines that the girlfriend of a murder suspect died during the arrest. Right beside it are Dad’s comments that the girl might not have died if he had been more careful.

Possibly the best Hyun-bodyguard ever, Ji-an brings him a gas gun for self-protection. She explains that the whole team is hard at work, but she purposely came home earlier so that he wouldn’t be scared alone. He smiles to himself at her antics, but when she gives him the look, he immediately wipes off the smile and hides behind his book. So cute.

Back at headquarters, the team is sniggering at Team Leader Kang, who has to report to his father about his late working hours. It dawns upon him that it’s dangerous for Hyun to be alone late at night, and he immediately sends Myung-woo and himself on bodyguard duty.

Little do they know Ji-an is in the house, fresh out of the shower in casual attire. Hyun is all for inviting the guests in, but Ji-an stops him, labeling it a “newlywed situation.” Lol. He’s amused at her word choice, but she waves it aside, zooming off to sneak out of the window. Is that The Window?

Team Leader Kang and Myung-woo enter and immediately spy two cups on the dining table. Hyun has no choice but to pretend he’s so lonely that he alternates between seats to eat. Ha, and both Team Leader Kang and Myung-woo ahhh in understanding.

Walking around outdoors in her bedroom slippers, Ji-an senses someone following her. She turns around, only to find that it’s Joon-ho behind her. She discovers that Joon-ho has always lived in this neighborhood, which remind her of Hyun’s words that Joon-young was always nearby.

She heads to Joon-ho’s place, and accidentally reveals that she was next door, attributing it to bodyguard duty. The puzzle pieces start falling faster in place, as she remembers that Joon-ho always had an interest in Hyun. His intent stare as she sips her tea is creepy, and Ji-an is stopped from entering a certain room, which Joon-ho claims to be full of embarrassing guy stuff.

He drives Ji-an home (since he doesn’t know she’s staying with Hyun), and she brings up the story of her missing father. She doesn’t know whether to believe if he’s alive or murdered, and Joon-ho asks which would be the better result. Ji-an turns the question back to him, and Joon-ho quotes philosopher Kant: “If you have hope, then happiness will bud from that hope.”

On the other hand, Nietzsche had said that hope is the worst of all evils, because it only extends one’s agony. Joon-ho used to believe that having hope was a good thing, but right now, he’s starting to think that hope might be too cruel. Hm, so he offed Ji-an’s dad’s then?

Hyun tucks Team Leader Kang and Myung-woo into bed, and checks in on Ji-an who’s back in her own house. He’s surprised that Joon-ho was the one who gave her a ride, and she retracts telling Hyun her hunch about Joon-ho. This time, they both nag at each other to stay safe.

As she clears the pigsty of her house, she chances upon all the stalker photos she took of Hyun. In one of them, she notices Lawyer Jung in the background, and wonders at the coincidence. She starts putting together the bits of conversation she had with Lawyer Jung and Hyun, and it finally hits her, that Lawyer Jung could be Min.

Joon-ho shares with Lawyer Jung the details of the latest murder case. When Dad arrested Mafia Boss Yong-woo 20 years ago, his girlfriend was killed in a similar fashion to the latest victim. Yong-woo’s brother had tried to take revenge on Dad, but died in the process. That’s why Yong-woo is hell-bent on revenge on Hyun, and sent that threatening letter. Hyun’s earlier words click into place for Lawyer Jung, and he smiles to realize that Hyun didn’t want him to be in the same position.

Going back to the murder case, Joon-ho puts himself in Yong-woo’s shoes, and doesn’t think that the target is Hyun. Yong-woo’s goal is to deliver an eye for an eye, which means that his target is the person most precious to Hyun. In the same way that Yong-woo witnessed the death of his girlfriend, Hyun has to be alive to see his loved one suffer and die.

Lawyer Jung zeroes in on Ji-an being the likeliest target, although Joon-ho raises the possibility that Lawyer Jung could be it as well. Lawyer Jung doesn’t think that’s possible since nobody knows he’s Min, but Joon-ho retorts that criminals always know more than one might expect.

Ji-an has found the same article about the girlfriend, and sends it over to Hyun. He notes that the girlfriend was killed in a similar way to the homeless victim. It’s interesting that when Hyun puts himself into the murderer’s shoes, he reasons that the likeliest target would be himself. This juxtaposes with our two resident psychopaths’ differing opinions, who would target the person closest to Hyun.

Hyun eventually comes to the same realization as well, and worriedly puts in a call to Ji-an. She picks up, but before she can disclose her location, she turns around to face the footsteps thudding behind her.

COMMENTS

Funnily enough, only this show could portray a window as a foreshadowing device. Last time someone escaped from that window, he ended up in the custody of a psychopath for 20 years. So when Ji-an sneaked out through the same window, it pretty much spelled trouble with a capital T, but hopefully not for the next 20 years.

That said, what a question this episode posed. In rom-coms, we have the typical who would you save if they both fell in the water scenario. But to prove this show is anything but typical, they play the who would a murderer target if he wanted to hurt you the most card. I think it was the identity of Yong-woo’s girlfriend which pigeonholed Hyun’s assumption that the target would have to be Ji-an. But if not for that, like Joon-ho, I wonder if Hyun would have considered Lawyer Jung.

I do believe that Lawyer Jung never imagined himself as a possible target, until Joon-ho’s suggestion manipulated that idea Inception-style into his head. It’s that little budding hope (which may be dashed) that might threaten to further derail Lawyer Jung’s unstable emotions, and fingers crossed that Hyun holds him back somehow, because Joon-ho is for sure going to fan that fire. It’s an interesting dynamic that while Lawyer Jung seems to be softening due to Hyun’s friendliness, Joon-ho is the one constantly reining him back to the dark side.

The brothers’ reunion got me right in the gut, and I never expected it to be so heart-wrenching and emotional for both parties. As far gone as we think Lawyer Jung might be, we still see glimpses of the wide-eyed little brother, who’s just craving for affection and attention from his hyung. Abandonment issues aside, Lawyer Jung seems fixated on the fact that Hyun never once recognized him, and it does make me think, if Hyun had recognized him as Min, would that have been enough to stop Lawyer Jung from going off the deep end?

What was even tougher to watch, though, was how Hyun’s anger and frustration were all self-directed. In his eyes, he’s single-handedly responsible for Min’s psychopathic development, due to a few slip-ups he made when he was a wee little kid which led to this series of unfortunate events. Given Hyun’s perfectionist characteristics, it will be tough for him to forgive himself, although it’s heart-warming to see him going out of his way to make amends and redirect the course of Lawyer Jung’s life. (Fun fact: The actors for little Hyun and Min are brothers in real life.)

Once again, our heroine defies stereotypes in taking it upon herself to be Hyun’s protector. It’s a huge turning point for Hyun to finally accept Ji-an’s outreached hand and let himself lean on her. I love that she knows when to give him space, and when to whip him into shape. Having come such a long way from their initial distrust, it’s their bluntness with each other that forces them to be honest, a quality in relationships that is rarer than you might think.

Joon-ho’s little speech about hope pretty much confirmed that Ji-an’s dad is no longer of this world, which is rather fitting since that gets us both leads in the same boat. Having both lost a father to Joon-young, it’s no doubt they empathize with each other on that front. But what I’m looking forward to is how they will force each other to walk the straight and narrow, and hold each other accountable to repay this evil with forgiveness. It works on many levels that the relationship isn’t some shallow all-consuming passionate romance, but a spark that’s slow-burning but slowly getting stronger. We need no entangled limbs or dramatic displays to know that they just get each other. Which is why a simple word of thanks and a forehead peck was enough to send me swooning to high heaven.

6 Someone please give an award to Seo In Guk & Park Bo Gum .. Seriously the scene at the beginning of the episode - when Hyun confronts Lawyer jung telling him he's min - is perfection .
lee hyun is a new charecter display from In Guk and unsurprisingly he's so greaaaat in it I mean omg I can't even point out what's he is best at - comedy , mysterious , romantic , cute ...
While It's the first time I'm seeing Bo Gum , I'm already his fan . He's just standing there laying his emotions like an onion being pealed and I'm just here being all emotional in front of the screen . Jang Nara is great as always too , i like her character so much . Her and In Guk have great chemistry ^_^
last thing i really hope KBS release the whole va instrumental ost album cause it's perfect ..

Yes, kudos and accolades to the writer and to the actors, especially Seo In Gook, Park Bo Gum and Jang Na Ra. Watching the guys, I'm so totally convinced that they are lost brothers with much unwanted baggage and watching JNR, I can see a cherished friend who is offering to carry that baggage and throw it away.

We did not get our council of 3 this time, but even the council of 2 psychopaths who discussed cold bloodedly the latest crime and how the next target was revenge against Hyeon, with Ji An as the target that would make him suffer most, was sooo good, with deadpan expressions at odds with the horror and fear that Hyeon would feel. And they just continued to calmly drink their tea!!! LOL!

+1 ! The scene between the brothers resonated brilliantly with the mood and flow set up by the drama. I love that the the writing, acting and cinematography have been blending in so well to give us drama without being overly melodramatic and a nice sense of pacing and purpose! Looking forward to the next episode!

Yessssss!

I'm slightly more blown away by Park Bo Gum's acting here, as his role is all about minute changes in his eyes and facial expressions. Not that SIG isn't killing it, but I think Min's character lets Bogummy showcase the best of his acting.

That's just because min is not the lead and it is an character with much intense in almost every scene he appears, which let PBG show his acting skills. While hyun is the lead in a male-center drama. SIG appears in almost 80 percent of the scenes and not every one of them is such intense to make impacts. But SIG is definitely doing a fantastic job of carrying the whole show.

was browsing the Net for Park Bo Gum's other projects and was amused to find out that he's the high school version of Kang Ji Hwan's Detective Cha. Then I saw a clip of him singing at a karaoke lounge... I think it's from a daily. Goodness, the roles couldn't be more different.

I'll always love Seo InGuk, and his acting in this drama is brilliant (that chest pounding scene. T_T), but Bo Gum's acting was damn near flawless. His reproach for Hyeon not recognizing him was delivered with equal parts of agony and anger, and then when his stare went blank... Man. Shivers. And then those sobs when Hyeon left? Heart-wrenching.

We're all the winners here with their casting, plus both of them (and Jang Nara) are racking up serious acting cred with this. Hell, DO gets props in this show from me too, he just kills it as the teen psycho!

@Kaybee - I'm responding to your comment from the future lofty perch of present day October 2016 as we are all enthralled with Park Bo Gum in Moonlight Drawn by Clouds. The world that knows PBG seems to be in love with BoGummy, as he has proven himself to be a stellar human being in his real life. I have returned to watching I Remember You, drawn here by a remembrance of the brilliant OST and the thought of watching SIG and PBG together in this episode and just loved your observation that Park Bo Gum would be BIG. Yes - you were so right!

I've gotten my husband to watch some Kdramas with me over the last year and he marveled over that scene, saying it was Academy Award caliber. I agree... what perfection in writing and delivery... the pain and hurt in both brothers was so real and believable without the false melodrama. Bravo Seo in Yuk and Park Bo Gum.

The depiction of the romance in this show is spot on, organic and believable with its progression. No over the top displays or sudden personality shifts but a real growing trust and affection. That 'thank you Cha Ji An and the forehead kiss is swoon worthy indeed... so much more meaning and intimacy than a passionate kiss could deliver. The restraint in writing and delivery is fantastic.

I've watched a Lot of Kdramas the last few years... this is seriously among the very top. Somebody gave me the link for commenting on KBS's international website before... I'm definitely going to comment there to thank them for giving us such an intelligent, compelling and touching show. Keep it coming!

Larrymimosa, oscar worthy i dare not said, but this ep has many Gratifying moment that defined S.I.J., the pounding on his chest is one weightiest act that haunt us viewers as we switch off the laptop and goes back to our routine work,,, that pounding just haunt us (me) the whole day... just like what (seo junghoo's weeping did in healer).... to cast him in same rank together with some junks in hollywood's oscar winners, i think he even rise above that...
I replayed that scenes many many times, each times was hoping, what if, say what if, Ji-An was around witnessing that, how nice will that be, if she can hold that pounding hands and heal the hurt... or, will she instead let him let it out on himself, rather than allowing him to suppress his torments, she may just let him inflict the temporal hurt upon himself, sometimes ,you just need to let your loved ones "hurt himself" punish himself in checked considerable measure, in order for him to forgive himself later on.... he needs to break in order to be healed.
how i wish Ji-An was around.
rejoycie, you cast the senario of "both fall into the water", who should you saved? you suggest Min is the most likely candidate...
well... i am gratified that, even Hyun thought immediately of JiAn, when realized that mafia Yong Woo may inflict the same pain of allowing him to agonize over the death of his "Most Precious Person" (in Min's words"He will kill his most precious person"), he does IMMEDIATELY thought of Ji-An.
i do not care whether in his heart, does he care more for Min or Ji-An, i don't think Ji-An minds too. to hold that significant amount in his heart, that he will ever think Ji-an fall within the realm of "Precious Person" is heavenly thoughts for us, viewing and caring and aching behind our screens.
rejoicie, this OTP is liken unto a slow-cooking soup... no expensive herbs or priced meat... very down-to earth, mild and gentle fire... yes, it touched me deeper into my mellow more, than those consuming fire and some quick hot passion, and some jealous triangle fights and break-ups... i think this couple really don't need those plots to spice up viewer rates... a gentle gesture, an understanding look, a weak smile... that tears, what was not said spoke louder than those hair-standing confession in other high-rating dramas...
i loved their simplicity, their honesty, their acceptance of each...

i loved their simplicity, their honesty, their acceptance of each other's flaws, their "waiting", their "friendship", when a relationship is borne out from a long-term friendship, instead of some silly "love at first sight, and succumb to consume fire"... i think, it's the kind that will weathered storm by your sides, come what may....

can someone tell the writer, she/he can create a couple that we wish, we can witnessed by our side, as friends, even if we can't be such a couple in our real life.., just like the Healer's Junghoo and Youngshin, we wish we can see someone like Hyun, can be redeemed by Ji-An.
some times you wish, there are someone like Hyun, and then, you wish Ji-an is walking besides him,....
if only, in our real-life has such couples walking beside us.....
it's gratifying, simply to think so.

"real growing trust and affection"

My exact thoughts! I love the progression of Jian and Hyun's relationship here. It's so believable. There's no 'one moment' of falling for either of them that we often see in kdramas. It's a build up of the time they spent together and it shows slowly as they spend more time with each other.

GAH, I love this drama.
I also love the fact that Hyun announced to all of us viewers that the person most precious to him right now is none other than Cha Ji-An. The murder target could very well be Min as well but at least for now Hyun doesn't seem to have an idea of that possibility yet. I'd love a scene of Hyun rescuing Min though, in future episodes. And hopefully that will wake Min up and make him realize how much his Hyung ah loves him.

At first I did not think Min would be in a position to be rescued by Hyeon, but I remembered that pile of envelopes on his chair in the studio, and they had a similar look to the one Hyeon received. A threat for Min as well???

If a serial killer (Min) gets killed, or just wounded, (looks like Min can take good care of himself) by another serial killer, it's called poetic justice.

Miranda it's not gonna happen just drop the show. If you don't know better way than killing villains to stop them just drop it. Some of murderers also have families which wouldn't be glad if they were killed. Most of murderers keeps killing because that is the only way they exact their frustrations from people. That's why we should understand other ways to stop them.

Nah. It's Ok. I will continue to watch the show for the handsome classy killers and for whatever left of romance and mystery. Thanks for your advice all the same, tho. About stopping killers. Especially, serial ones. As we say in sunny Colorado, while packing heat - the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun, and save innocent people in a process, is a good guy with a gun.

@Growingbeautifully

Yes I've noticed that scene as well! Either the killer knows very well that both Hyun and Min are sons of Professor Lee and is threatening the both of them individually, or there could be another possibility that the murder target is Min, just like how Lee Joon Young proposed during their tea party. Another notable point is that the killer was only seen holding a photo of Hyun after his vicious murder of the homeless man.So I'm going with Min being the target but we'll see! I can't wait for Monday to come. Oh, or shall I say Tuesday? I need those subs!

It just struck me that Hyun and Min are getting the envelopes.... but not Ji An.... does that mean that both are targeted to be killed or does it mean that Ji An who appears to be cherished by both (even if this is a mistaken thought) is the one to be targeted?

The envelopes with the spattered paint were sent by Min, however the ones with photos of the latest killing was sent by someone out to get Hyun and Min.

yes, Min will realised, deep inside him, his icy cold demeanor doesn't hide the fact, that he is warming up inside.... to think, that he knows too, that Hyung's "most precious person" is Ji-An, and its fine. yeah, he is jealous, but, he does understand enough, to volunteered to drive instead of allowing Hyun to drive, when the trio were off to save Ji-an. he will knows one day, and be redeemed by the long-suffering efforts, persevering redemption his Hyun offered him. he does cares, if not, he will not sob so heart wrenchingly after Hyun left the studio.
ah, talking about how Hyun cares.... it's easy for viewers like us, to condemn someone who "having no control" as to spill the beans to psychopath L.J.H...
but, we forgot that, as a child, Hyun lost that fortress of a parent behind him, his father who should be the shoulder he lean on, becometh his pain as dad doubted him, and Hyun allowed his father to doubt him, borne out of both his love for his father and his brother. it will cause his dad more remorse if he knew he wronged his older son, and more pain that the younger one is the Monster... and Hyun will not ever allow his brother to go thru the tormenting solitude he went thru', monster or not monster, Min is still the brother that almost worship him, and look upon him as his sun-moon-star...
all of us, do have moment of break-down, when we reached our bottled necked, we just spilled, and make some unpardonable sin" in others' eyes.
Hyun needs a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen to, just that moment, he found it in the most unfortunately chosen person, in L.J.H.
to say Min was also broken... was not Hyun broken all these years,.. Living beside the imaginery dead father on the floor, dreaming of the assuming dead brother, he was just breathing air,not truly living... did he really think Min was dead? even Ji-an knows he came back korea to claim that tiny weeny hope that Min may be alive.

Yes I agree with you! it was definitely not little Hyun's wrong that he confided into LJY. He was after all, just a young child that needed a figure to open up to, even if it's just temporary. I'm sure Min will come to understand that very soon. And yes, both brothers were/are so broken it's a pity they did not have each other to hold onto. I only hope that during the remaining episodes of this drama, Hyun and Min will reconcile and be there physically and emotionally for each other regardless of any dire circumstances that may come upon them.

‘too late.’
“you abandoned me”… no, I didn’t … let me explained… (I am sorry, there is still hope if you hear me out….)
“you didn’t look for me… but because I thought you were d…. (Mdm Hyun and inspector said so… )
“but you didn’t recognised me….” (yes…. The poem about a dead boy?.....)
but,
“you leak to L.J.H. about ME !!!”
for, accusations on abandoning Min, not finding Min, not recognising Min, … can traced back to his naïve trust in Inspector Mdm Hyun (the acting ahjumah whom brought him up)….
but, the fact that he did leak the deadly secret about Min as the actual monster, is totally on his part, is the one hugh blow to swept down like Volcano ashes from head down. ….
yes, “I single handedly, did hand you to LJH…. “, I , not LJH is killing you, by making you kills me, again and again and again….
Until you kill me, and its wont ends by killing me…. Will your heart be whole again? nevertheless,
no its not too late, as well kill me.
min smiled faintly, replied “you’re right!”
Hyun smiled back.
gosh……. that smile. … we behind our laptop, all ached sore….
next scene, found both parting, sobbing uncontrollingly,
inside us, well… at least this moment, let’s both of them wept their heart out, ability to cry is a blessing sometimes, there are moments when our hearts dies, and there are no more tears.
they still cares sore for each other, and there is just that much pain a human can bear before breaking point.
poor poor poor brothers.
yes, jean, i also wish both reconcile, one in prison, the other visiting him... but not one dying in the other's arm.

This Ji An and the Ji An of Healer are my two favourite female characters now. Smart, full of initiative, brave, willing to take risks, willing to communicate honestly and so confident about themselves that they won't take crap, especially from their significant guys.

Agreed. I want more of these type of women in my dramas! One of the reasons I adored Young Shin in Healer was that she never lost her spunk and independence; the romance made her a stronger person. Too often the heroine loses her backbone or some vital part of her personality once she hooks up with the guy. I have faith that Ji An will also retain who she is.

0

Required fields are marked *

Nah, I wouldn't compare these two. Ji-An of Healer sometimes went for things because she didn't think twice about whether she would be able to handle the danger she was putting herself in or not. Less brave then being wilfully blind. Nor was she as forthcoming as Jang Nara's character, who confronts Hyun right away when she knows the truth.

Sorry, I know nearly everyone at Dramabeans worships Healer but I found it just okay with quite a bit of weak writing.

Healer had casting, music score and the right amount of good comedy going for it. This show only has casting. The way Kdrama writers make excuses for cold blooded killers coz, you know, they are sooo handsome and lonely, makes me sick. The audience is manipulated to feel nothing for killers' many victims - too busy analyzing how psychopath's mind works.

0

It hasn't ended yet so it is not right to assume that it's all about understanding monsters. No, they all have given choices but based on their circumstances their way of thinking and tendencies differs in time. So there is not only one answer. Like Ji An said "no one has the right to kill another, or the right to judge who deserves to live. "

0

It's a matter of perspective, but I do agree that I Remember You is a better show. I love both, but I have to say that this show is better written with more complex, more nuanced and more difficult to portray characters. I would say Healer is more appealing to crowds, because who doesn't love a masked hero?

0

@Marina, this entire show focuses on Hyun and Ji An - two people whose lives were completely changed by the serial killer who entered their lives as kids. And I'm not seeing many excuses being made; Joon Young certainly tries to present his tragic backstory as a cause for his behavior, and Hyun instantly says "nope, no sympathy from me, he kills people". So I don't think the writers are blind to that at all.

The audience feels terrible for Hyun, Ji An and Min... all members of families left behind, and in Min's case, someone who may have been permanently damaged himself.

I loved Healer and think it was a good, successful show, but I can admit that the plot got very loose at the end there and it power through on the romance and performances. IRY is staying strong on plot as well, which I think gives it the edge.

0

@Marina
Don't agree. You are oversimplifying. This show throws question about morality and basic human nature, Healer didn't even touch surface of such complex and existential issues. It was about individual journey of a group of young people and were it led them. However I won't say more as until the show ends I find it unwise to draw parallel. And Cha Ji-An isn't like Healer Ji-An. A trained police women and a rookie journalist can not have the same attitude towards the same situation. They may have same temperament but very different in approach and thinking.

Miranda and dear all.
"But what I’m looking forward to is how they will force each other to walk the straight and narrow, and hold each other accountable to repay this evil with forgiveness", a gem by rejoicie.
re: putting aside the comparison of OTP in Healer and IRY.
in those of us, who see and treasured what JH and YS meant to us, what we saw and loved in their characters, it meant personally to us something no one can undestand, and its in ours to stay... very private and subjective... need not argue about it.
IRY couple is beautiful n moving in their own ways.
God jsut use different people to move and inspire each individual of us.

now, let me focus on sympathy towards psychopath and theme of justifying killing with childhood torments, and of cause a pretty k-pop boy face as killer.
let's put aside what tactic kdrama uses to arouse our senses...
speaking personally, i am always moved beyond words to see, the main lead, in the finale, chose to forgive the "dad-killer" or "wife-killer" and chose to forgive, and doesn't carry out justice by his own hands. to be able to forgive, does redeem yourself, and rise above the commons, whether or not the murderer repent not, its doesn't pay for an eye for an eye revenge.... in real life, you will not gain true happiness by revenge, infact you will feel empty. some might think its noble idiocy to demand forgiveness for people not deserving.
well, its benefit the person who forgives more, than the person who been forgiven.
with Ji-an by his side, i believe, Hyun can do so, let's hope the writer rise Hyun up above the norms.

0

Going to have to agree with Alua and Miranda on this.... Healer was weak in writing, directing and execution, they just struck gold with the casting... the loosely written resolution really had no direction, it's like they had too many episodes and not enough story. There is no comparison in regards to the two Ji An's, JNR is in a league of own. And the Score of this drama is infinitely better than healer, I watched healer never understood the hype.

Yes. Cha Ji-An is a completely different character, I like her and wasn't comparing her to other Ji-An. When I said that writers programmed excuses for the killers, I meant lines like, "Oh, he only kill people who abandoned someone or abused kids." And a writer makes up a ridiculous case of the adoptive parents who were just waiting and celebrating the killing of their son. Really? First, the writer didn't prove to me why the mother hated her son that much in order to watch him get beaten to death. Second, isn't medical care very expensive in Korea? We watched tons of dramas in which people struggle and get into debt to pay their relatives' medical bills. Let's say the mother did hate the boy she spent money on to adopt and raise, she had no way of knowing if he would be killed by his schoolmates and not crippled. Wouldn't she be thinking of hospital bills she would be on the hook to pay for her son's recovery? Doesn't make sense. But it does provide good excuse for our killer to go after her, right?
I swear, after watching Gap Dong, and other shows I felt like flying to Korea and providing women with conceal carry training for self-defense. Why no sympathy for women, shows?! Too much emphasis on finding logic in monsters' actions. No wonder girls line up to marry serial killers in prison. We make them into idols. Now, imagine all these serial killers are played by actors who are overweight and ugly.

0

@Marina

You are seeing as excuse what other people understand at motives. He feels abandoned so he focus on people who abandon others. A motive is not an excuse for the murder and all the fears shown for becoming a killer and the word "monster" itself plays with that.

About th "ridiculous" case, obv. in this type of short series the crime is a trigger to develop the main plot more but I think you are appliying a bit of strech with the medical care in Korea. First, it is shown is a quite well-off family, people who can't pay the bills (in korea and everywhere) usually don't have insurance and are poor, not the case here. And, the motives are a bit weak, or at least bad explained, I agree but not everything is about money, it can be they didn't love him as they though they would (that happens in adoptions more than you think) they have another daughter, maybe he didn't feel like his son when he had a biological daughter (it's fucked up but it happens too). And trying to show a psycho mind, their background, etc... it just show they have it,you might like to ignore it but they are people with a context that for sure it has influenced them in ther actions, why not show it? Trying to understand is not the same as forgiveness and it doesn't make them or their kills right.

0

I agree with you. Cha Ji-An is definitely a more compelling character and I love her bad-ass cop skills. Did you see how Jang Nara got thrown around mercilessly during her encounter with the two maniacs who attempted to kill her? It's like they've forgotten that she's just a girl.

Loved Healer when I was watching it, definitely a drama that knows exactly what its viewers want. I also love Young Shin for her bubbly personality but, in terms of wits, skills, rationality (Young Shin loved/is okay with kissing Healer without even knowing his face just because he saved her life), Cha Ji-An is a winner. And I always like a female heroine who isn't always a damsel in distress, not saying that Young Shin is one.

Alright sorry guys! just my two cents!

GB.
i did exactly that,
while i watched the whole drama...i couldn't help thinking of Young shin...
loved both of their "waiting", for their undestanding, for their perseverance, for their willingness to hamper thru to whip the hero out of his self inflict tortures...
both knows when to keep their distance, when to keep their silent, but also when to step in and save him, when to touch with some sincere confessions (but not spine shivering romantic chants)... both knows the miraculous power of a simple long hugs, a mountain moving sympathizing tear, a silent look of "i know... its okay, i know..."
KBS writers, may suppass all other stations, in creating main lady casts that we only dare dream of becoming such....
i wish, only wish to become Youngshin, as like i wish to become Ji-an... (huh, not because i want the "hug hug" thing with Hunghoo or Hyun...)
i simply like Youngshin and ji-an as who they are.

I could write love poems to Cha Ji An's character, she is just so not-kdrama-female-heroic if you know what I mean. When she 'fell asleep' on Hyun's desk I knew that she was doing it on purpose or at least to get something out from him, and after that, every other female heroine would keep it in herself and lie to male lead to supposedly protect him or sth, but again, she proved us wrong and told him right away, my god, isn't she just awesome? So strong, really down-to-earth, caring and just so relatable to us, viewers, because she is so special in being so unspecial (again, I don't know if you guys would get what I meant :D). Also Jang Na Ra's chemistry with Seo In Guk greatly improved so it's a pleasure to watch their scenes together.
Also regarding the last scene, it would be ridicolous for Ji An to abducted for the one, two... third time? So far the writers didn't let us down, and this time I think will be the same. Maybe it's Min who came to see if she's alright or one of policemen from her squad, because it would be just too easy to put her in danger again. I think Min is the real target this time.
So sad this drama is not liked in Korea, one of my favourites this year.

Yes, it's great on the part of the character (I want more Ji-an's in future dramas!) but I also like it on the level of the writing – because it's precisely the kind of "secret" that drama writers like to use to drag out the story (the lack of communication that leads to angsty separations or eons of time of the OTP pretending not to like each other or noble idiocy etc). No such silly trickery here, fortunately.

Ji An is incredibly refreshing.

@Matt @Miranda, I don't think Ji-an was deliberately trying to listen in secret to Hyeon. She's not the kind who'd make that sort of pretense, imo. 0

I don't think it was deliberate either. I think she came out to comfort him, genuinely was nodding off, didn't answer when he asked if she was sleeping because she basically was, but then perked up when he kept talking. Not deviousness, it just happened that way and then she chose to act on it. And good for her!

is this drama seriously not liked in korea? Are the ratings super low?

I've noticed that when it comes to dramas, Korea isn't a huge fan of cop-mystery dramas. They love thriller-cop-mystery MOVIES, but not full dramas.

It's really a shame bc tvn and OCN have penned some top notch thriller dramas that don't get nearly enough credit as some of the cheesier melos or rom-coms

It's pulling in like 5.6%-4.6%. In the same time slot, Hwajung is pulling in 9-10% consistently, and High Society got about 6.5%-8.5%. The previous show in this timeslot on this network was School 2015 and it was doing like 5-9.5% with it climbing in general. However the show before it was Blood, also bringing in around 5% and then Healer which only did about 7-8%. So it's in third place but the ratings seem at least typical for the network. It's just a shame that High Society beat it in the ratings because that show was just not that good; on the other hand this show has quite a "Dexter" vibe at times with the serial killer angle so maybe it's a case of a bad timeslot for the content. too.

Joon Young was apparently able to feed the names and locations of criminals to Chief Hyun for a while after he escaped; if he was still connected to criminals during that time, it was also the time he had Min.

Min was really little and would've been underfoot, so even if it was just a year of crossover, some of those criminals probably noted that the young son of the guy Joon Young killed had gone missing, and hey, here's a little boy with Joon Young!

It doesn't make sense for JoonYoung not to have killed the guards, even less so given how many years have passed without contact or incident. It worked with Min since he was a kid, but I don't predict any father-daughter reunions.

Also, I would note that JY would definitely kill the guard who instigated the harassment (I'm not clear on which of the two is her dad) and the other would be the same to him as those workers from his childhood home.

Not going to lie - i watched this episode FOUR times. And cried at the brother's reunion every single time.

SIG's facial expressions are so fantastic - quirking his lips to show how pleased he is by Ch Ji An's attentions; that slight tilt of his head in the basement which told me he let himself relax in her presence and allow himself to be comforted, or the half nod he made when PBG accused him of sending him to LJY and the pained "Aniya!" he said at that.

he makes each expression a full dialogue in itself.

And words cannot express how much i love the progress of the romance. Its very real. Dont get me wrong - everyone loves a good "gesture" or a "moment" where time stills, the wind blows and the orchestra plays in the background, but the everyday - dare i say it, real love- that one mostly sees (off TV that is), is shown in a smile, a hug, the ability to have difficult discussions and still not have dramatic partings/declarations etc etc.

And Cha Ji An - the number of times i have yelled at a TV screen saying "just open your damn mouth!" - she makes up for every one of them. What a great character for a female lead

So much love for Ji An also. She is such a strong and smart character, not the typical heroine you see in Kdramas. She can kick ass, quick in understanding and finding a solution, and doesn't back down. I just wish she doesn't end up in the hospital again. Please this would be her third if that's a bad guy behind her. She can fight but the other person can fight back.

Overthinking fan obsessed theory here -

Do you think the lawyer is just a a victim of Lee Joon Young's psychotic meddling? What if, LJY took some random child, made him believe he was Min, brother of Hyeon who has been abandoned by him and sent away to a psycho killer.

And all this because LJY has an unhealthy obsession with how Hyeon will turn out and how will he react - essentially how far can he push Hyeon before he breaks and becomes just like him. LJY for some reason really identifies with Hyeon and could it all be elaborate setup for for Hyeon to come over to the dark side.

I'm giving thousands thumbs up for both SIG and PBG. SIG improves a lot from his previous works. While PBG proves that he ould play other characters and not just the cute and adorable ones. I remember watching him in Tomorrow Cantabile. (ps: I love Yoonhoo waaaayyy more than I love Yoojin. Ha.)
But as Min here, wow PBG is awesome.. I love the way he looks sooo broken when he says that Hyun didn't even recognize him. That practically brings me to tears.
Please please please..... Don't kill Min!
And.... creepy LJY is creepy...

I wonder if they will release a preview for next episode.
Anyway... Thanks for the recap rejoycie! <3

I am hoping that Min would forgive his Hyung sooner rather than later. I WANT BROMANCE!!!!!!
Hyun can feed Min with "good food" so he can lessen his psychotic tendencies. The scene where Hyun was checking Min's hands for injuries was so heartwarming. sobs...

I can't wait for the whole investigative team to discover how close Jian and Hyun really are. Team leader would be jelly for sure.

Why isn't this show more popular in Korea? It's awesome. Then again, none of the other shows have stellar ratings either. Anyway, what do I love about this episode?
1.) That reunion scene just nailed it. Hits you right in the heart.
2.) Just shows what happens when children are forced to deal with adult issues.
3.) I love how this time Hyun smiled when Ji-an was there to comfort him instead of being upset like last time.
4.) During the forehead kiss I just about died from all the swooning I was doing.
5.) Hyun being pulled up with a simple handhold, so cute.
6.) Although Lawyer Jung shot down all of Hyun's ideas for spending time together, that scene made me feel like there is some hope for the brothers.
7.) It's creepy how both times someone crawled out that particular window they ended up in the hands of Joon-young. Ji-an using that window can't be a good sign.
8.) Some bodyguards those two turned out to be - falling asleep on the job. But they're so cute next to each other.
9.) Ji-an being smart enough to put clues together about the identity of Min and Joon-young is great. A smart, capable, bad-a** heroine - I didn't think they existed in dramaland.
10.) Ji-an being the first person Hyun calls says a lot. Not only because she is 1 of the 2 closest people to Hyun, but since it was the criminal's girlfriend who got killed, Ji-an is obviously the closest match to being Hyun's girlfriend even in his mind. Their mutual concern for each other is so great.
11.) I JUST LOVE THIS SHOW! So far this show and Kill Me, Heal Me are my favorite 2 of this year.

Thanks heaps @rejoycie!

The emotions really come into play this episode. I dreaded and rejoiced, was sad and yet hopeful, was touched and amused.

The funny scenes that I laugh at when I think about them are the ones where Ji An in all seriousness assures Hyeon that she would protect him, as if she wasn't just so much smaller in size and strength than him. "I'm came home early, so you feel calmer now right?" And the amusement on his face when he heard that, which he then had to wipe off in a hurry when she gave him the EYE!!! LOLOL.. just too precious these 2 earnest people.

I have questions: there was a deliberate slow pan across Lawyer Jung's uninhabited studio to show the envelopes on his chair, just after one envelope was delivered to Hyeon... might that be a foreshadowing that Min could be targeted? In that pile of envelopes might there also be pictures of a murdered person?

Oh yay you caught that too! That were a previous moment before, after Hyeon nonchalantly left the police station even though he's got a police station on his tail. Ji-an caught up with him at the lift saying she'll protect him, and I think that's when the first death glare from Ji-an came. Now, our regular, rude and disinterested Hyeon wouldn't care about covering that up, but the fact the did is kinda *squeal* (=

Yes, it's sweet of him who is honest to a fault, to not say something where Ji An would get embarrassed in front of others.

He's more empathic and feeling, regardless of his cold exterior... and definitely he is not a psycho or sociopath, just a reticent genius with much trauma, perhaps.

I was shouting at the computer during that business with the envelope. This drama is skilled at dragging out the suspenseful moments just enough to get your emotions riled up and then it delivers.

Most dramas would have had Ji An not say anything at breakfast and then become overwhelmed by PLOT so it would stay unresolved.

I wonder if the ending is a fake-out? It seems too soon to have JA be damselled even if she does save herself this time.

well one of the complaints people have with kdrama is they tend to go in circles using the same plot device over and over again through out a drama, and how many times has it been for Ji An to take a beating and end up in hosiptal, so perhaps you have it right and this time it will a fake out and the real target is Min. Though it would be fun to watch Ji An kick a*s some more

Or it's Min behind her and he offers to walk her home.

Might be too big of leap in character development though. Unless we have a scene to show he doesn't understand why he's going out of his way to protect Ji An. He didn't seem all that concerned when he and JY were talking about her over tea.

Min could be there to see if Hyun shows up - Min's still very invested in who Hyun loves, and this is a prime opportunity to see how strong that bond is.

Of course, what Min isn't taking into account is that 1. Min is probably also on the killer's list and 2. Ji An either knows or is incredibly suspicious that he's Min.

I'm worried about that last one. If Min finds out Ji An knows, he'll think Hyun told her, which is the opposite of the truth. And that might translate in Min's head into "Hyung told a cop about me". Bad parallels to Joon Young.

This show just spawns them...I also wondered if Eun Bok could be the son of Joon-Ho and that somewhat creepy lady from the last episode who let him out of his house when he was a teen...

PBG, oh my what brilliant acting! He looks angry and yet like a hurt 6 year old!
SIG...someone give this man an award quick! This is such a powerhouse performance, every single emotion was displayed perfectly. When PBG accuses Hyun of hoping he was dead, the "aaniya" utterted by SIG....goosebumps!!
CJA gets better n better each ep.What makes this story great is that the otp are straightforward, no "I heard a secret but I won't talk about it", no " misunderstandings"

Who knew a forehead kiss m hug can get all of us swooning!

This drama completes me!

The brothers reunion was so heartbreaking that I cried for the first time watching a real bromance. Hyun's eyes that said that he was to be blamed, and Min who's eyes said "Why didn't you recognize me?" was just soooooooo amazing. And I loved how Hyun was all preppy like a high school girl following her crush with, "Want to eat?" "I already ate" "Want to go for a drink?" "No" "Want to watch movie?" "No" "You want me to buy you a radio?" "No". HILARIOUS. And so very cute. I thought that radio comment was random until somebody mentioned about his subtleness in asking about the cards. Haha.

I dunno why, but Park Bo Gum is such a cutie in this. I often see that wide-eyed little Min whenever he looked at Hyun before. He's hurt and he wants his brother back. Its heartbreaking enough that the brothers were separated for twenty years but for the reunion to be this heartbreaking when it looks supposedly one-sided? Yes, I saw Min cry though. That brought the tears back. Argh. This is amazing.

And Cha Ji An....... She's simply the best heroine this year! No more stereotypical Cinderellas with daddy issues. No. Its time for strong women with petite bodies and the will to live with their chins up. I love this character. So much.

And their romance is well thought, obviously. I love how they need a hug and a peck on the forehead to tell each other "I'm here and I understand. Don't forget that I'm here". Love it. It doesn't have to be sex or passionate kisses, that hug and peck says it all. The passionate kisses are for fan service. Lol.

This drama completes me, and I'm not afraid to say that.

P.S. I too found out that the little brothers are brothers in real life. Young Hyun (Hong Hyun Taek) is the real elder brother of young Min (Hong Eun Taek). With me everybody, awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww....

Actually there's probably plenty of kid actors, but the occurrence of cast members reuniting in subsequent dramas seems to correlate directly with the relationships they've made. Planning director was the affectionate queen to SIG in The King's Face and they had several scenes together--and here she is.

After Rascal Sons, SIG made comments in interviews that the role made him more interested in having kids, as he became very close Hong Hyun Taek; I've seems a number of BTS pictures of them together and they're clearly close. I think that's why this kid ended up in Master's Sun and again in IRY. I can't imagine casting directors not asking actors, especially leads/second leads for suggestions on filling certain roles.

Cha Ji-An is my second best Heroine in life. Oh ji-An of Healer, my all time BEST.
thru-out whole 16 ep, this moment when Hyeon pound on his chest in a salad mixed of self reproached, guilt, and empathy, horror, lost... was the climax of his acting career, the best moment that deserve a acting award at coming KBS.,... at least deserving a nomination. By this scene, he has morphed out from his high-school genre.
“… If, I ever run away, then you….” it was an unfinished request…. then he titled his head looked deep at her, and smile… he knew deep within that only JiAn can wake him up if he compromise, bring him back if he went running away to escape.
(next morning) Ji-An realised waiting will harm Hyeon more: “… I waited for you, you alone know something, chasing something, all by yourself, I waited knowing all that… because I understood you…. You’ll probably tell me someday…. you’ll reached out hand and ask for help…. I was patient and waited… Because you’ve already reached out to me, I’ve heard it, I can’t pretend I don’t know yet, you need help. I’m just sure that, it’s not something you can handle by yourself,… right now I’m asking as the person closest to you, before I have to listen as police officer, I’ll hear from you as Cha Ji-An.” This is a courageous girl who knows when to put all her shyness, and formalities, and heal him as being “the person closest to him”, allowing him to lean on the only one closest to him, wake him up to do what he has no courage to do, as someone who not only close, but cares. At this moment, what he needs most is understanding from “someone close, someone close and cares, someone close and cares and trust him, and the good wolf within him.”

(continue..from 32.2.)
After hearing the LYJ tapes at the underground dungeon, JA was swearing at LJY’s madness, he smiled at her vulgarise, only JiAn can make him smile at times like this … but was alarmed to find her tears up.
“It’s mean you were struck in this kind of place at such a young age….”surprised that she understand,
surprised even more at her embrace, he tilted head forwards and gazed deep, “thank you, cha ji-an”. And planted that bard earned kiss at her forehead. Not just JiAn earned that kiss, Hyeon too, deserved that.

“... don’t worry too much, I’ll protect you, I’ll also catch the culpit… Because you were alone, I came earlier… you feel calm now right?” … amused, Hyeon smiled, but break into a fake frown at her insulted angry face... only JA can put that kind of smile on his face, his swollen eyes tired face…. Thru out the whole show, esp those moment as he suspect the identity of Min, and until the final ep, I treasured those moments when he was most agonized, and tensed, yet JiAn can simply make him smile at some silly gestures, or a frank outburst of her emotion, or a sincere caring hug….

I'm still thinking about wonderful Ji An, ... and Hyeon's response.

"Refusing to let him sweep it under the rug, she says that she was enduring it all this time, waiting patiently for him to take the initiative. He suggests for her to continue waiting, but she can no longer do so, since she can’t un-hear his revelation. Ji-an’s unsure how exactly she can help, but one thing she’s sure of is that Hyun can’t handle it on his own."

I love how she keeps her word. She said she would wait and she did. When she heard what she was waiting for she did not hesitate, but confronts Hyeon, fully aware that he would try to deny what he said. She is smart enough to recognise in his admission about Min, that he is calling for help, and she cannot pretend that she does not know.

When he tried to run away, it's so great that she followed him to grab him by the hands to face her, knowing that he could reject her, but not fearing it. Just exactly what he had asked her to do when he thought that she was asleep? And again she stops him from walking away (by a wrist grab) from the difficult topic and is able to keep him in dialogue with her.

And the best parts... she is prepared to listen as Cha Ji An, the "one close to Hyeon"... perhaps his first real friend after his brother. There was a flicker of warmth or relief in Hyeon's face when she described herself as this. Next she feels so aggrieved for the child Hyeon, that he is moved to honestly confide in her, his greatest regrets. She hears beyond the words and responds to comfort him so naturally with a hug, which once again surprises him, but which he accepts gladly and comfortably. His forehead kiss was acknowledgement that she is cherished, and that they are friends, and that he is grateful. Quite perfect!

“you told me knowing there is a chance I could hear everything”…. She understood subconsciously, he yearning for her to somewhat somehow knows, he needs her to understand.. she knows.
“you alone knew, alone thought, alone finds… but I endured it, i waited.” …. To control oneself to wait, when inside you dying to do something or say something.. many times we selfishly let our emotion take control, and instead, caused more hurt or harm to our loved ones than help. But Ji-an just waited, because that is the best for Hyun, didn’t she said, “because I understand you.” Understood you need your space, your own timing, I believe you will tell me, the gal has this quiet simple confidence that the man does started to hold her important in his heart, so that one day will come when he will share with her.
But when he reached breaking point, come to a point when he is actually asking for help from her to make himself open up to her, that he has lost that courage to come clean and open, yet don’t know how, she knows actually this is the moment. Because , now its seems he is the one waiting for himself to act, waiting for her to know, too fearing that he may run away without her knowing…..
I loved this kind of girl. Knows when to wait, and when to stop waiting. When to keep silent, and when to break thru and force him to hear what he should hear.
“I speak as someone closed to Hyun”… he needs to realised that, he indeed has SOMEONE closed to himself too. What he needs isn’t a solution, he infact, very much capable of finding the solution, what he needs, is the courage to carry out that task, and the hands and heart of a loved one, a closed loved one, is that very energy , that give his hand that push to carry out that task. So, her blinking tears “you were stuck in this damned place in such young age”… and that envelope long hug (some pats, with a soft kiss on his shoulder), were that simple help Hyun needs, to walk thru that dark valley. Most often, we don’t ask for solutions or help, because we actually knows what we should do, in dark valleys.
“a closed one, who understands, and loved us” is all we need.
“thank you, Ji-an.” We all behind our laptop, gratified by that pat on her forehead.
yes, we too, are glad, that his redemption has begun.

That's sweet Mary of Bethany! I do agree... it's not that we don't know what we have to do, it's taking the step to do the unpleasant but necessary that we need to have the will for, and Ji An offering her support and understanding was what Hyun needed most.

I loved how he hesitated at her hug, then realising what she was offering without any strings or conditions, accepted her care and thanked her. :)

Something is definitely wrong with me !!!!! why my heart aches for Min, there is veryyyy less chance for him not to be the murderer, moreover this show never really bothered to misguide us, the show let the viewers guess about Min and Joon Young very easily, so it is also possible Min to be the culprit.

But still STILL I was really moved at the reunion of brothers, specially when Min said twice "You don't even recognize me"

Strangely even after the dramatic revelation of Joon Young's pathetic past, I don't feel any sympathy for him.

Btw, does the writer try to connect Min with Ji An, talking about the similarities, Min and Ji An both were stalking Hyeon, they both escaped through the same window and met the same person, both of their lives are under threat because of Hyeon

That's an interesting point. These 2 closest to Hyeon are share similarities in some situations.

You know what struck me as a possible twist (very painful one) some time back... either because of Min or Joon Yeong, Hyeon will be forced to choose between these 2 loves of his life, who is to be saved and who is to be abandoned. This next episode could already be a foreshadowing of the ultimate choice that Hyeon will be forced to make. :( Just conjecture... let's hope for the best. :)

I'm so glad this drama is treating Jian like the smart cop that she is. She is putting the pieces together herself. Usually, dramas would make the mystery so drawn out and even if all the clues are laid out, it would take us episodes before the character figures things out. But Jian is using her intuition and logic to piece things together. Good job, show!

Stand out performance from Park Bogum this episode. He doesn't overact, so refreshing to watch. I have a bad feeling Min will die though. I don't know how and why or by whom but it's been niggling at me since last episode.

Thanks for the recap! I love all the nuances and complex emotions in this drama, that I'm always looking forward to the discussions. (=

I disagree a little that Joon-ho's 'it could be you' comment was a calculated mind-fuck to keep Min on the dark side. I think for Min and Hyeon, it's generally quite clear Min is less susceptible only because his identity has been kept a near perfect secret. But then again, Joon-ho's remark, that criminals are smarter than we think, is very intriguing.

I think there's been a lot of progress in this episode in the two brothers' relationship. No matter what, it's a huge load off for Min to be finally acknowledged. And while he might still harbour distrust about being 'abaondoned' with LJY, at least Hyeon's anguish should soothe him a little that his hyung cares. Or when he smiled because he figured out that Hyeon was grateful the new murderer didn't know about Min. The way Hyeon worked on rebuilding the relationship is nothing I'd have imagined. I'd expected more grovelling and pained conversations, but it's quite refreshing that he's decided to 'glue' himself to Min, and I'm sure Min knows that his brother's personality towards him now is warmer and more brotherly than his usual standoffish demeanour.

I'll admit I was quite disappointed by the no-kiss, although the whole outcome was very fitting. In hindsight, Hyeon's forehead kiss is indeed a lot more heartfelt, and a lot more in character. And the fact too that his worry switched to Ji-an so quickly shows that he himself is aware how much she means to him. There was that moment too, in the kitchen, when Ji-an was asked if she's talking to him as a policewoman. Her fumbling initial answer - 'I'm talking to you as Lee Hyeon's' - really makes me excited if she had almost uses the 'girlfriend' tag. Cuz if she were going for 'Lee Hyeon's friend', she didn't need to bite her words, right?

Above all, this is really one of the healthiest romantic relationships in a K drama. Hyeon allowed himself to open up to her, telling her pretty much everything except the unconfirmed identities, and Ji-an was very direct in getting him to share the load. Heck, I loved how they addressed the elephant in the room – whether Ji-an is pursuing the story as 'close friend' or a police – without pent-up expectations or the whole noble idiot trope. Role models! (Okay other than the initial stalking and his 'go aways'.)

Buttttttt if she's really in danger this time, maybe we might finally be in for a real kiss? *hopeful* after all, Hyeon will be a lot more vested this time round. And also, since he might feel responsible for putting her in harm's way because of his background, he might be a whole lot more emotional this time.

Haha i agree with you ji an's being in danger has lots of potential triggering things. Just like you said it can be a emotional development for Hyuns part or with dejavu effect flashbacks from brothers mother's death. But this time please writers just don't make her hospitalized then I would gladly take same thing being repeated if consequences are rather different and opens a new door to big mystery

The sibling-glue thing struck me as fantastically realistic. I've done that to my siblings - something happens, they're upset, I screwed up, but I've apologized and now am going to make a cheerful pest of myself until they open up again.

"Do you want me to buy you a radio" was interesting in that context. Is he teasing Min about the murder card? Is it a callback to a shared childhood item? Had he figured out some deeper piece of the puzzle?

And the expression on Hyun's face when he asks Min to promise to kill Hyun first is beautiful. There's not a trace of malice or threat in him, just a wistful kind of love. I completely believe Hyun would be okay with that - and it must throw Min for a loop to see that Hyun really would be okay with it. Not "take my life!" in some sort of fit of guilt, but as a rational trade. Min would see guilt as self-pity, but for Hyun to offer up his life if Min ever feels that urge places the focus on Min and his needs - Hyun almost removes himself from the equation by substituting himself in as just another person who can be killed.

This is why I love Seo In Guk. He's soooo charismatic and unique. And he also keeps picking great dramas (Reply 97, Master Sun, High School King of Savvy, King's Face, and now this, I Remember You)

Agree. He's not like those big stars with many choices in his hand, but he still makes good choice out of the offers

I'm theorizing that both Min and Ji-an are going to be targeted.

After all, who said the murderer was only out for the revenge of one person? The killer's girlfriend died during his arrest, and his brother died trying to get revenge for him. One girlfriend, one brother = Ji-an, and Min.

Plus, it would fit the timing of his revenge perfectly too. Hyun had asked 'why take revenge for something like that now?' The answer is that because 'now' is the only time in Hyun's life that he HAS a girlfriend and brother for the killer to deprive him of.

If the killer had been aiming to take the life of Hyun's girlfriend, he could've started this whole thing quite a while ago, since Ji-an and Hyun started living together. If the killer's been keeping him under surveillance as I expect he has, he'd see that Hyun has a girlfriend now, and he could strike. But no, he waited. He waited until the /very moment Hyun finds his brother/, and it's only after that he sends the threatening letter.

Of course, this brings up the question of how the killer had known Hyun's brother was still alive and that the brothers were going to end up reuniting (he'd have to know Hyun HAD a living brother in order to wait for Hyun to find him) but like Joon-Ho said, criminals know more than you'd expect.

I could be wrong, obvs, but I feel like mention of the criminal's brother being killed was too random to be a coincidence.

Good catch about the criminal's brother dying too.

I hate to admit it, but you're right - that possibility is very high.

Judging by general rules of K drama where the heroine is not supposed to die... I guess Ji-an is safe, but we might still be in for a roller coaster ride of emotions. Min... I'd love for more bromance, but I think - if he did kill - the past will catch up with him. I don't want him to die, but if he has to, I'd like it after a proper reconciliation between the brothers.

If you noticed the closeup shot, Min also got an envelope similar to what Hyeon got. It was stacked with the mail on his chair.

Yup, I think you've got a point. I do remember the brother dying as well, so it does seem likely that both Ji An and Min could be targeted in this revenge.

It's obvious the killer is The psycho doctor as the scene of the murdered homeless guy showed the back profile of the murderer to be LJY. Didn't he read the dairy of Dad to plan his next target. I'm sure Min knows he's targeted - psycho minds think alike, but he's keeping his cool. I do hope the only one who gets to be dead is LYJ and Min gets to live...

Those footsteps we hear sound like dress shoes - they're crisper than sneakers. I'm wondering if it's Min behind Ji An.

I could see Min going to Ji An out of curiosity, to see if Hyun will swoop in and save her again. But that could be interesting because Ji An almost certainly thinks he's Min at this point and might be wary of him, meanwhile the new murderer might actually be going for Min, not Ji An.

So potentially we have a scenario where Min shows up to observe/hang around Ji An (not knowing he's been discovered), then the killer comes for Min but Min thinks he's headed for Ji An, and everything goes crazy.

I'm also very, very interested in seeing how Min reacts if Ji An indicates she knows he's Min. Based on history he's probably going to jump to the conclusion that Hyun told her, when the fact is that Hyun specifically DIDN'T tell her and she found out on her own. But that would be one hell of a misunderstanding, if Min thinks Hyun told the policewoman about him.

Gosh this episode broke. my. heart. I can't tell you how many times I've replayed the scene of Hyeon and Min's reunion. I've watched it over and over. I'm addicted and can't get enough. Who knew the scene between brothers could be so compelling and moving?

Min: "Maybe I'm already broken. I've been broken since the moment you abandoned me."
Hyeon: "No. I never abandoned you."
Min: "No?" Angrily flings away his paintings and stands up. "You never abandoned me? You told Lee Joon Young about me. About our secret, you promised it was between us and you'd never tell anyone. You never even came to look for me. You didn't even recognize me when we met..."

You could see Hyeon's heart break with the realization that his actions inadvertently led a serial killer to his beloved baby brother. All those years believing his brother was dead... All those years of living in a funk. He blames himself where he shouldn't. Because despite his smartness and high IQ he was still a child dependent on adults who failed him. Especially that female cop who traded the truth and his brother for career advancement. And his dad who blurred the distinction between being a true parent, his career, and practically letting a serial killer into their home.

I wonder what Min will do when he finds Joon Young lied to him. Because in all honesty, Joon Young didn't come to their home to find Min, he came for Hyeon. He recognized in Hyeon a kindred spirit as himself who was misunderstood just like him and wanted to befriend him. When he saw that Hyun's father locked Hyun up in the basement, it reminded him of his own imprisonment in the hands of his family and he wanted to free Hyeon.

Min was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He crept into Joo young's car, and Joon Young decided to keep Min so Hyun would no longer be misunderstood by the people close to him. That was why he told Min that it was the best solution for everyone for Min to be kept with Joon Young. I also think Joon Young was trying to explain to Ji An in the hospital in an earlier episode that if the person kidnapped by a murderer also has psychopathic tendencies, it is easier for them to bond and be easily influenced by said murderer.

This drama is so layered and so damn fascinating, I am so glad that KBS kept the integrity of the show despite the ratings and didn't compromise on the plot. I am really going to miss it when it's gone. 4 more episodes to go.

@Fish N’ Chips

Your comment reminds me of the suspicious figure following Hyeon and Ji An around when they were 'dating' at the abandoned theme park. I guess that was how the killer knew he got a girlfriend.

I just finished a couple of dramas, and I'm looking for some suggestions to some others. How is I Remember You? It seems pretty unique haha :) I'm also considering Oh My Ghostess

They're both good. I Remember You is showing fantastic pot and acting consistency, Oh My Ghostess is promising and stylistically good but we'll see how the writing holds up.

I love pretty much everything about this show, but I am so, so impressed by the time and effort spent on the minor characters. Too many shows spend 95% of their efforts on the main storyline and main couple, and then 5% is thrown towards whoever's the funniest side character.

This show gets the balance so right that I don't even notice it, it's wonderful. I'm just constantly delighted by Sunbae Cop's constant Dave-irking (I rewound "[multiple death threats] can happen when you live your life like that Dave..." about a million times), the ongoing joke about Team Leader living at home, the interesting side cases, all of it.

I also really appreciate that Ji An and Hyun speed right over the bits that, in any other drama, would qualify for weeks of anguish. Oh no, he heard me talking about confessing to him! Oh no, he doesn't want me to talk about his brother! I said "newlyweds"! But they both just blow right by it and it's incredibly realistic - sometimes embarrassing things happen and the only way out of it is to barrel right through.

I can't believe this isn't popular in Korea. "High Society"? Insane "Mask"? WHY!? This is the genuine article, Korea!
