I Remember You: Episode 6

While yesterday’s episode was a chance for us to get a peep into Ji-an’s psyche, today gives us a similar glimpse into Hyun’s sexy mind. The case hits a little closer to home, but the harder it hits, the better it is for us. We get a little less of Hyun and Ji-an playing house, but it’s all good, since he eventually hops onboard the Scooby gang.

EPISODE 6: “The Blood of a Murderer”

Hyun summarizes the important points of the case to Prosecutor Shin: Prisoner Park Young-chul was framed for the murder for his wife and daughter, and detectives on the case were misled by the evidence. Son Dae-young grew up to avenge his dad, first killing the real murderer, then going after the officers who worked the case.

Since Dae-young was arrested before he completed his revenge mission, there’s one survivor left on his hit list — Prosecutor Shin, who prosecuted Young-chul. The question is, did he convict Young-chul as a mistake, or did he do it knowing there was a different culprit?

Hyun explains his hypothesis: Prosecutor Shin knowingly arrested Young-chul in spite of his innocence. The real killer had been an informant for Prosecutor Shin and aided him greatly in cleaning up the mobs, earning Prosecutor Shin much-lauded praise from the public. But once he committed a murder, Prosecutor Shin had no choice but to cover it up.

Prosecutor Shin defends himself with his warped philosophy that the sacrifice of one person can benefit many others. Maximum happiness for the maximum number of people, that’s basic mathematics.

Hyun quotes a question often posed to psychopathic killers: There are five patients in a hospital, each needing a different organ transplant. A healthy young man enters and happens to be a suitable organ donor for each of the five patients. What should the doctor do? A serial killer’s reply would be to just kill that one person, to easily gain back five lives. It’s eerily similar to Prosecutor Shin’s logic. Hyun muses that he would love to see the prosecutor’s brain.

Prosecutor Shin says he never expected to have a conversation with the son of Professor Lee (Hyun’s father), and Hyun’s face hardens at the mention of Dad. Then Prosecutor Shin mentions psychopath Lee Joon-young as well—he’d been the one to put Joon-young behind bars.

Joon-young’s case was difficult, because there was no corpse and no evidence, so there was no way to convict him. Hyun realizes that evidence must have been fabricated in the process, and asks if his father did it. Prosecutor Shin: “If your father did do it, was what he did good or evil?”

Prosecutor Shin asks about Hyun’s lost memories, and informs him that Hyun actually experienced another onset of memory loss, even before Dad’s death. It sounds like it’s the first time Hyun has heard about this. Prosecutor Shin suggests that Hyun represses memories when he faces something he can’t handle. Prosecutor Shin brings up the death of Hyun’s mother, but before he can go into more detail, someone appears behind Hyun suddenly and delivers a mighty thwack to his head.

Ji-an is alone in her house, and she notices that her house is waaay too spacious for just one occupant. She’s feeling the absence of her one-day roomie, and starts seeing imaginary Hyun in every nook and cranny. She confesses to herself that although she doesn’t trust Hyun, she feels sad for him, for continuing to live with his dead family.

Her attention is drawn to the photo of her and her father, and realizes that Hyun left a note for her: “I remembered, Stalker. You’re her.”

Hyun wakes up on the floor of Prosecutor Shin’s house with a bleeding wound to his head, and there’s a unidentified drawing of purple flowers left behind for him. Memories of Mom, purple flowers, and bloodied footprints float back to him. Hoho, Mom’s death is not straightforward either. He tells us that after this day, Prosecutor Shin went missing.

Deputy Chief Kang approves Ji-an’s return to the investigation team, and holds Team Leader Kang accountable for pestering him so aggressively that he had no other choice. Team Leader Kang looks mighty satisfied with himself for that, although he’s actually daydreaming about his heroic moment in arresting Dae-young.

He starts to wax poetic about gaining the respect of his team members and building up an unstoppable team, and then Deputy Chief Kang swiftly rejects the follow-up request for funds to hire a consultant. PleaseletitbeHyun.

Hyun delivers another one of his university lectures, and the topic this time deals with the genetics of psychopaths — are they born or made? Ji-an and Team Leader Kang are also sitting in and give a sheepish wave from the audience, which Hyun ignores.

After the lecture, Team Leader Kang and Ji-an approach Hyun, but ha, he actually tells them to take a queue number (number two and three), since Number One is already waiting for him. The young man was at the lecture, Lee Jung-ha, and we saw him earlier being given Hyun’s book and instructed to attend, though we couldn’t see who’d told him so.

Jung-ha says he read Hyun’s book looking for answers, and asks if the son of a heartless murderer would follow in his parent’s footsteps, particularly if he grew up in a harsh environment. He has no urge to kill, but Hyun’s book mentioned that genetic and environmental factors together increase the possibility of someone becoming a murderer.

Ji-an brings up Prosecutor Shin’s disappearance, and Team Leader Kang says that since Prosecutor Shin sent out a message that he didn’t want to be found, it’s ambiguous whether he’s really missing. Since the case involves a prosecutor, the situation is out of the police’s hands.

We don’t hear Hyun’s response to Jung-ha, but it’s finally Number Two’s turn, and Team Leader Kang skips the pleasantries to request for Hyun to join the investigation team. Ha, Hyun deadpans that he was already expecting the invitation. Of course he would be a huge help to the team, but what’s in it for him? Team Leader Kang: “Team camaraderie and a bit of compensation.”

Since the team can’t match Hyun’s exorbitant fee, Hyun oh-so-kindly offers to assist with cases that he has a vested interest in, free of charge.

It’s finally Ji-an’s turn, and she whips out the note that Hyun left. He feigns ignorance at first, but then grins at her gullibility. She asks if his memory has returned, and then we cut to Ji-an’s childhood flashback.

Little Ji-an is at the police station, insisting to the officers that her father (the prison guard) is definitely not Joon-young’s accomplice. She throws a tantrum in front of the building, at the same moment that little Hyun enters the station.

The police officers gossip about Hyun and his family, while Ji-an eavesdrops and gathers that there’s another kid who also lost his family to Joon-young. Hyun suddenly appears behind Ji-an, and just happens to overhear Officer Yang mentioning Hyun’s “strangeness.” This run-in enlightened Ji-an about the connection between Hyun and Joon-young.

In the present, Hyun teases that he erased her from his memory since she was so annoying. And then, they proceed to throw insults back and forth like first-graders.

Ji-an is curious as to how Hyun gained access to her apartment, and it turns out that he managed to guess her passcode, which is the date of Joon-young’s escape from prison, aka her father’s disappearance. He found Dad’s case file inside, and realized that Chief Hyun lied when she said it didn’t exist.

Since Hyun guessed her code, she deduces that Hyun was already aware of her fixation on Joon-young, and consequently, her scrutiny of Hyun. He admits that he had a hunch, and they banter some more about who’s letting who deceive whom. Hyun pokes fun at her lacking height, and she takes a few steps up the slope to be taller than him. Omg, why are you guys so cute.

Back at his childhood house, Hyun stares at that drawing of the purple flowers, and thinks back to his conversation with Jung-ha. He takes out a book titled “The Wolf Story” (which retells “The Three Little Pigs” from the wolf’s point of view, which paints him as an innocent victim of circumstance) and has it delivered to Jung-ha, who receives the package at his part-time job.

Hyun invites neighbor Joon-ho over, who offers to help with the cooking, saying that he’s quite good with knives. They prepare their meal together, and in the meantime, another murder takes place.

The police enter the crime scene, and there are two bodies splayed out, with blood seeping through their clothes. They both appear to be dead, until one of the bodies (Jung-ha), suddenly grabs the arm of the police and confesses that he killed the other guy.

At dinner, Hyun and Joon-ho are eating their homemade meal. Joon-ho is perceptive enough to detect that Hyun is worried about something, and Hyun explains his concern for Jung-ha, who worried about having a genetic predisposition for killing. Joon-ho notes that Hyun is kinder than he expected, and Hyun just smiles at that.

Eun-bok calls Hyun to inform him that Joon-ho was the first person to arrive after Officer Yang’s crime scene was cordoned off. This seems to confirm some theory for Hyun, since after hanging up, Hyun asks if Joon-ho’s family is not returning for summer break. Joon-ho smoothly deflects that he’s supposed to go to America, but work calls and “the dead aren’t letting me go.”

At headquarters, Eun-bok is still looking over the list of arrivals at Officer Yang’s crime scene that Hyun requested. Nobody understands what Hyun is up to, and fellow investigator Seung-joo notes that Eun-bok’s name isn’t on the list, even though he was one of the first to arrive on-site.

As Jung-ha is sped to hospital in an ambulance, the paramedics discovers a piece of paper with Hyun’s phone number. We see the latter part of their conversation earlier, with Hyun’s comforting words that it’s normal to think of the worst-case scenario and question oneself. In fact, it’s stranger to not question at all. Hyun gives his number to Jung-ha, and encourages him to call whenever he needs.

The hospital calls that number and reaches Hyun in the middle of dinner. They notify him that Jung-ha is currently a murder suspect, and Hyun conveys his apologies to Joon-ho for leaving early. But of course, Joon-ho jumps up and offers to come along since he might be of use, and Hyun suggests that it will be an opportunity to get closer to each other.

When they get to the hospital, the two of them totally ignore the detectives’ questions, and instead bombard them with their own questions about the corpse and the crime scene. The detectives are bewildered at their behavior, and the two agree to split up and report any observations back to each other. At the same time, Hyun gives Lawyer Jung a call to hire him to represent Jung-ha.

Ji-an is burning the midnight oil at headquarters, wondering why Hyun might be interested in finding the first person at the crime scene. Her thoughts are interrupted by a phone call from Hyun, which is a more of a curt instruction to meet outside.

Seeing a couple head out on a date puts romantic ideas in her head, and she starts harboring a teeeny bit of hope that Hyun is meeting her for the same reason. But when Hyun arrives, he destroys her fantasy by stating that their destination is a murder scene.

On the way over, Hyun updates Ji-an about the murder case and the suspect, and his plan is to get her to steal the case from the team in charge. Which basically translates to Team Leader Kang pulling strings to gain them access to the crime scene, with a precious piece of information that a third blood sample was found at the scene.

Team Leader Kang stops Hyun from entering the crime scene, since Hyun totally rejected the offer to join the team earlier. So Hyun agrees to take up the consultant position and Team Leader Kang records their verbal contract, which is essentially Hyun countering every single condition Team Leader Kang declares. Ji-an puts a halt to their pissing contest, and they finally get down to some investigating.

Ji-an and Hyun scan the blood splatters, and simultaneously arrive at the conclusion that the culprit is right-handed. Hyun gives Ji-an a little nod of encouragement, aww, look who’s learning. But Hyun recalls that Jung-ha is left-handed, and a call to Joon-ho confirms Hyun’s hypothesis that Jung-ha is likely not the culprit. Hence, there must be a third person involved, judging from the footprints and bloodstains, and this person could either be an independent party or Jung-ha’s accomplice.

At the hospital, the detectives are already itching to take Jung-ha’s confession, but Lawyer Jung turns up to refuse any statements on his behalf. He maintains that Jung-ha’s earlier confession is invalid due to his state of shock, and there is a lack of evidence that Jung-ha even wielded the murder weapon. He advises the detectives to find some evidence before treating Jung-ha as a suspect.

Heading into Jung-ha’s ward, Lawyer Jung greets Joon-ho with creepy familiarity. Unreadable expressions cross both of their faces.

Back at headquarters, Team Leader Kang is walking the team through the murder details, but Myung-woo protests against investigating a case that is not even assigned to their team. Team Leader Kang lets them know that Hyun is now their consultant, and since he has a relationship to the suspect, they have an obligation to follow up with it. The team is divided on their opinions of Hyun, and Myung-woo just can’t seem to shake off his doubts about him. But Team Leader Kang doesn’t mind Hyun’s shadiness since criminals are sometimes the best profilers.

Hyun and Ji-an are the only two left at the crime scene, and we’re taken through a reconstruction of Hyun’s analysis: The mysterious third person came barging into the apartment and stabbed the victim in the abdomen, but Jung-ha arrived and wrestled the murderer to the ground, getting injured in the process. Hyun is adamant that Jung-ha is innocent and only confessed to protect the identity of the murderer, but Ji-an is hesitant to jump to the same conclusions. It’s not rare for murderers to switch to their non-dominant hand to stab someone, and Jung-ha could have been an accomplice to the murderer but got hurt during a subsequent fallout.

The two of them make their way to Jung-ha’s hospital ward, and find Lawyer Jung waiting by Jung-ha’s bedside. Ji-an is surprised that Hyun hired Lawyer Jung to defend Jung-ha, but more importantly, Jung-ha is now awake.

Hyun stays behind while Lawyer Jung heads out with Ji-an. Lawyer Jung is curious about Hyun’s loyalty to Jung-ha, but Ji-an also has a limited understanding of that relationship. He offers to take her home, but she explains that she won’t get into the car of an evil lawyer. Lawyer Jung is unfazed by her response, and says he’d like to be friendlier with her.

He hazards a guess that her disdain stems from his defense of the purple-flowers killer Seung-hoon. At her affirmation, he explains that lawyers do not judge if their clients are good or bad; their only job is to trust their client and defend them. She doesn’t fall for his idealistic words, and his face hardens after she leaves.

Hyun stays overnight at the hospital and when he awakes, Jung-ha is already up. Hyun voices his confidence in Jung-ha’s innocence, but all Jung-ha asks for is “The Wolf Story” to be brought to him. Hyun agrees, and adds that he’ll find out why Jung-ha is doing this.

The team makes headway with the case, as they discover that the victim was a witness to a murder that Jung-ha’s dad committed, which he is now serving twelve years in prison for. At Hyun’s approach, Myung-woo quickly states his conclusion that Jung-ha must be taking revenge on the victim for having a hand in incriminating his father, and happily points out that Hyun got it wrong this time.

But another young man visits Jung-ha’s dad in jail and addresses him as “Dad.” Dun dun dun.

Ji-an chases Hyun down, and challenges his belief that Jung-ha’s innocent. Hyun is sure they’re missing a piece of the puzzle, but Ji-an cuts him down and asks if he’s just wishing that Jung-ha isn’t the criminal. Hyun gives her a long look, but doesn’t refute her words.

Hyun heads to Jung-ha’s room, and discovers a photo of Jung-ha and his brother. He also spots a copy of his own book, with a post-it note detailing his lecture date and time. The note is not written in Jung-ha’s handwriting, and Hyun wonders if someone purposely sent Jung-ha to him. Back in the hospital, Jung-ha’s condition takes a turn for the worse.

Ji-an is waiting for Hyun when he leaves Jung-ha’s place, and she’s determined to get to the bottom of his preoccupation with Jung-ha. Hyun says it’s because Jung-ha doubted himself, and he thinks to himself, “Like me.”

Changing the topic, Hyun puts Ji-an in the hot seat by asking why she lied that she was a sasaeng fan, when she could have just said she lost her father to Joon-young, as he did. She pretends to be embarrassed that he doesn’t remember her, but he correctly guesses that she was distrustful of him, fearing that he was a monster like Joon-young, that he was on Joon-young side. From Ji-an’s look, Hyun’s words hit the nail right on the head.

Thinking back to Jung-ha’s question, Hyun throws the same words to Ji-an, “In your eyes, what do I look like?”

COMMENTS

Oooh, we’re finally going there. I wonder how long Hyun has already been aware of Ji-an’s sketchy back-story, and what pushed him to out it now. Once again, Ji-an’s behavior has similarities to Dad’s: Due to Hyun’s one-time association with Joon-young, Ji-an and Dad start to wonder if they’re on the same side, and if Hyun could be of a similar type — a monster. As we saw when Dad confronted young Hyun, it’s hurtful to be wrongly accused, and he could have avoided the scenario this time by taking the out and accepting Ji-an’s words at face value. But there’s something that stings a little extra about being assumed to be a monster without being given that chance to defend yourself.

Now that Ji-an and Hyun are on the same page regarding their past, their ensuing harmless banter and teasing is honestly adorable to bits. It’s almost as if time has been rewound and they’re back to being kids, although I do wonder if Hyun realizes that Ji-an is a link to the past that he was wishing so hard for. Well, at least there aren’t any first love clichés being thrown around here.

I had expected this drama to throw some pretty tough cases at us, so that Hyun can swoop in and show off his intellect. But beyond that, I’m realizing that the writer actually intends for the cases to be a window into our leads’ souls. It’s no surprise that the two past crimes have stemmed from a rogue son taking revenge for their fathers, tying in nicely with the debate about the nature of killers — born into it, or grew into it? The cases serve as a reminder that one starting point does not necessarily lead to the same destinations.

Dae-young and Jung-ha have similar backgrounds and motivations, but their eventual paths couldn’t be more divergent. It’s telling that although Hyun initially empathized with Dae-young (who gave into his hatred and went on a killing spree), the follow-up case enlightens us that Hyun really identified with Jung-ha instead. People initially assume Hyun to be more like Dae-young — unfeeling, hardened, and rooted in the past — but Hyun’s kindred spirit is really Jung-ha. They’re both embroiled in self-doubt and worry, yet sacrificial and loving enough to take the rap for their brothers. It’s incredibly touching that Hyun had such unwavering conviction about Jung-ha’s innocence even when the whole world and the evidence was against it, inspired by his own experience. Ultimately, it gives me hope that Hyun can one day see the same goodness in himself, and project that same amount of faith onto himself.

Generally speaking, this show is probably richer watched than read, because there’s a lot captured in the lingering camera shots, the prolonged awkward silence, and the split-second change of a character’s expression, that it’s hard to put down in words. We know less about Joon-ho and Lawyer Jung, but the occasional slips in their façades hint at something much shadier and creepier. Every bit of their dialogue is a calculated move, and like we’ve only skimmed the surface with them.

Wow! Thanks rejoycie!!! That was a great recap. Although you say that it's "probably richer watched than read" your recap made a lot that was 'blur' clearer and added richness to my understanding of the events... so good job and thanks again!!!

People are busy with guessing about who is Min and who is Joon Young but as I have watched in kdramas, generally appearances do not change. I mean if anyone met you in your childhood then he or she would recognize you when they would meet you as adult even they won't need to know your name ( for example KMHM and LE2). Personally I don't think I can recognize a person who I met in his childhood, if at teenage then a possibility. But this thing is quite common in k dramas!!!

Then why Hyeon can not recognize Min or JY??? Has he forgotten their face??? He doesn't have a family pic??? JY and Min has done PS??? Specially JY got missing in such a age that his appearance should not change much

Don't know , though it is actually normal for Hyun not to know Min but it is the k dramas which gives me the idea that you will know the child even if you meet him after many years, when he is full grown up.

And for Joon Young, his face should not change much

hyun has hole in his brain cause of amnesia thing. so it's understandable if he's forgotten his lil bro face and JY in the present time. 20 years is long enough to change human facial appearance naturally.

and this drama is uncommon drama. how much our guess' already broken by the plot twist written by the writer? and i think that the writer and PD want to make this drama so logically, not the makjang things.

Wait wait wait. Admittedly, I stopped watching Kill Me Heal Me (and I'm still working out what LE2 is), but (pardon my rudeness) what dramas have you been watching?! Whole show premises and plot lines have been built upon the idea of characters not recognizing someone from their past. I Hear Your Voice. Gaksital. If I was better at playing this game I could probably name more names. In real life, yes, you would absolutely have a point. In dramas, wellllll.... there is a high rate of face blindness (and I'm not even talking Girl Who Sees Smells).

I am absolutely elated that this show brings in well crafted crimes/mysteries to solve that actually give us a greater revelation of our characters, instead of taking time and attention away from throwing more light on enigmatic Hyeon.

It was really his story, his unfair treatment and the promise of his potential that grabbed me from the start, and I'm so glad that this story is not wasting time on other sub-plots.

Finding out that Lee Hyeon lost his mother also through murder, coupled by probably knowing his brother enjoyed killing animals (not proven yet though) it makes it even more understandable that Hyeon wants to know the mind(s) of killers, especially a mind like Joon Yeong's which seemed similar to his own. His trust in and care for Jung Ha is touching, because it reflects how he wishes he could have been trusted and cared for himself, and this makes me super invested in seeing Jung Ha survive and regain his innocent status.

So even the side characters take on a greater role and meaning for me (us). I find every character interesting and well drawn, and I'm thinking they are not going to be wasted but are there to add to the plot and story. What a wonderful show!

I especially liked this case because it gave me more reason to think that Hyun covered for his little brother so much that his father misunderstood which of his sons was responsible for the behavior he found troubling.

I thought back to the scene where Min told their father that Hyun was actually the one drawing the two-headed men (which was likely a lie) and realized that Hyun's fascination with Joon Yeong was probably because he met someone he thought resembled his brother, not himself. Hyun was an extremely straightforward kid; it was his brother who could be cryptic (and outright deceptive) like Joon Yeong. He may have regarded Joon Yeong as his brother all grown up. I think he wanted to know what more he could do to ensure that Min didn't end up a killer.

But this is all conjecture. lol

Also, we can add Lawyer Jung being jealous that someone else is Hyun's "Number One" to him being upset that Hyun didn't remember him because he's not important to Hyun to the Lawyer Jung = Min tally.

This is good insight into what was likely the reason for Lee Hyeon's interest in Joon Young and may also explain his intent when making a promise with him as a child. It makes perfect sense that he's trying to figure out his brother and wonders if the future for his brother is what he sees in Joon Young.

I've been thinking (guessing?) along the same lines. I'm also thinking that there's hints that Dad may have harbored some sociopathic tendencies as well. You know, cause locking your kid--even the one you think might be a monster--in a basement does suggest some fluidity in your sense of morality.
The narcissism necessary to justify the level of hypocrisy someone (who's supposed to uphold the rule of law) needs to break the law in the name of protecting it is frightening.

I'd never have guessed that Hyeon would have put himself in a position in which he could be bested by Team Leader Kang, but I was grinning from ear to ear when Hyeon was 'cornered' into joining Team Kang because he had to follow proper police procedure, in order to investigate Jung Ha's case. And Kang got him without all the conditions that Hyeon had laid on for taking the Consultant role. Ji An was looking on non-plussed but probably cheering on the inside. :) At least Hyeon does not win all the time. :D and that makes him more normal and less 'special'.

If I'm not mistaken, in most pages about this drama, they have Seo In Guk, Jang Nara, and then Lee Chun Hee as Team Leader Kang and then Park Bo Gum, who didn't appear in Happy Together IRY casts ep.

Could it be that his character is more significant than Park Bo Gum as the lawyer? I didn't say this on acting skill wise but in terms of the drama, could it be that Team Leader Kang has more significance than just a working-partner for Hyun?

Ahhh, they had threw Eun Bok in this long list of suspects, who's next?

Ha, brilliant move on the writer's part. That one offhand comment about Eunbok could mean nothing, or it could turn out that Eunbok is the big baddie. With so many people trying to figure out what's going on, they're just playing with us.

This show reminds me of Agatha Christie's novels, she wrote about 80, and I was only able to guess the bad guy correctly in 3 of them. The way she kept twisting things differently novel after novel was mind-boggling. So far this writer seems to be showing the same skill.

Ikr, I keep going back and forth between 'likely' and 'thus prolly red herring.'

I do hope it is them though; I love the idea that possible psychopath little bro turned into this soulless lawyer, and lee joon-young masquerading as bumbling yet competent joon ho. Even Joon-Ho's whole hose mishap episodes back is kinda like Hyun's act as a fresh + clumsy cop in the interrogation room.

Even if it isn't them, I totally want those three in a room together at one point.

I am loving this show so very much! What is most enjoyable for me its that the twists are genuinely surprising. The part about hyun's mom was something I totally did not see coming. Unlike my current pet peeve hidden identity which has twists so predictable I'm predicting them 2 episodes in advance *eyeroll*
Which is why I have hope that inspite of all the foreshadowing about the doc and the lawyer they will infact not turn out to be the killer and lil brother. Not that I'd mind if they were, just that I'm depending on the show to surprise me. And I totally agree with rejoicie alot the show being better for watching than following. There are just these subtle moments throughout that can't be spelled out but seem shady when you think about them. But could also turn out to be completely innocuous. The implied subtext has the added advantage of being used to add to the suspense and/or be used as foreshadowing as well as making the world seem more realistic...

"Well, at least there aren't any first love clichés being thrown around here." I like how you pointed that out. I actually have been getting tired of that same cliché. I like realistic coincidence than the, "My first love! I was 'Fated to Love You'!" (Pun intended)
But in all, this show is really enjoyable. I like how each case is related to the main story of the show unlike in "You're all Surrounded". That didn't work so well.

Whoaaa, the cold-hard expression on Joon Ho and Lawyer Jung faces at the hospital was... freezing.

Just as @J, I suspect it too. But, at ep 6, it's still early in the game for the writer to delude our suspicions. This drama is getting better and addictive, can't wait for next Mon to come. While waiting impatiently, I'm killing the time, and spoiling myself, with Mask, SWWTN, OMG and TTILY. ^^

I just noticed from the screencap that the whiteboard in this episode's lecture is much more manageable than the one in ep. 2. Maybe the prop guys were tired? :-)

I agree with rejoycie that much of the 'action' is in the subtle looks and music and shots. I wonder how much of that is indicated the script and how much is left to the director and actors.

I'm really loving this show. I think a lot if things have been strongly hinted at in terms if backstory but it's not the "who is who" question that's driving this story. Instead it's really about the journey and unraveling of everything.

I could guess in advance though that our case would have brothers. It's a bit too on the nose for me in terms of trying to parallel cases along with our main story but that's really my only complaint.

The question of snoring evidence to catch a criminal reminded me of an older film with Orson Wells but I'm blanking on the name. My question here though is how they 'knew' JY was the killer if there were no bodies or evidence.

I get a real kick out of Team Leader Kang! Enjoying the whole cast immensely tbh.

This is a really good drama, so far one of the best ones I have seen in 2015. I am little bummed that Korea is not liking it as much as the international community. But I hope the production team don't sacrifice quality because of the ratings. I have such high hopes for this drama, that I am actually watching each episode that comes out instead of waiting to marathon.

I am loving all the characters!!!! But Team Leader Kang is the real MVP!!!!

I think the reason the ratings are low is because SMG is more suited for comedy. He has such beautiful comic timing that it seems to be a waste, putting him in such a serious role. His charm lies in his smiles and his cheekiness.
On another note, I think the pathologist could be the serial murderer that killed Dave Lee's father. He has such sinister looks sometimes!

I have to say that I am really being charmed by Team Leader Kang. He was so affable at first I thought he'd be a bad guy (holdover from Cyrano I admit) but this is much better. First he plays the dad card, then he catches the murderer in the last episode with some really excellent fighting skills, and now he manages to flip things around on Dave Lee and gets him to serve as a consultant. "I guess he's not a pushover" indeed!

"Heading into Jung-ha’s ward, Lawyer Jung greets Joon-ho with creepy familiarity. Unreadable expressions cross both of their faces."

My guess is that is that the protege was meeting his master (both psycho serial killers) the connection between them goes way beyond a lawyer bumping into a forensic scientist colleague.

I also think Joon ho is the one who referred Jung ha to Hyun's lecture and gave him David Lee's book. I also think he killed him when he no longer had a use for him, to avoid Jung ha revealing too much to Hyun that would clue him in to the real identity of Joon ho. What other reason could Joon ho have to visit Jung ha?

Lilacs! Again, "case of the week" is a little more than just the case of the week and to make things even better, it turns out that even the very first "case of the week" has something more to it than meets the eye. Daebak!
This show is awesomeness all around, I like pretty much every little thing about it. I even like the frustration of not knowing what exactly Hyun remembers and what he doesn´t, though it wouldn´t hurt if they´d be bit clearer on that front. I certainly don´t like when he happens to remember stuff off screen. Cheater!
But I like when Lawyer Jung´s face goes all dark and menacing. Park Bo-gum genuinely looks like he only eats cookies and milk, so the evil face really creeps me out.
What dosen´t creep me out is Joon-ho. I know, he should, but I just can´t help it. Whenever Hyun and Joon-ho are on screen together, it´s just...omg, guys! Get a room already, lol!

i have many lists of drama this season that on my waiting list. but this one i don't want to wait until it's finish airing. the show keeps me wodering what happen next, and always make me curse and split out the harsh words whenever it's ending with cliffhanger and i must wait another week to answer my curiosity.

i just love this drama. the pacing, acting, directing, music, plot, from creepy scene until the little sweet scene, i just love it. i don't need the super creepy scene with blood anywhere everywhere or amazing fighting skills to make my adrenaline rush out. just simply gesture and the right amount of expression it'd be better. i don't need a lot of passionate kiss scenes or abs or super romantic scene to make my heart fluttering wildly. just simply moment such as sharing beer can together or sometimes bicker and arguing something. it's simply but sweet.

Oh, Monday please come faster, though usually i hate Monday :)

I love love love the lawyer. He plays it with such innocence - not just the face but the smile and all. (I'm usually quick to pick up slyness, I like to think.) I've got to concentrate on the words to pick up on his jaded/sinister words. To some extent, I think there's some vulnerability to the character. There was that moment in episode 5, at the prison, where he seemed disappointed and angry that Hyun brushed off his 'you look familiar' comment.

I wonder too, about his words to Ji-an outside the hospital. I don't think he's so innocent that he's just playing along with clients. After all, his manipulative side was on full display with the drug dealer 'hyung' (adopted? real? why weren't their connection mentioned?). But maybe, just maybe, there's a part of him that struggles a little with his evil personality, or just feels angry at the world for thinking badly of him such that he felt 'cornered' to act that way.

Joon Ho - damn, I can't figure this guy out at all. He has warmth, which LJY didn't, so I kinda doubt that connection. But why why why do they play that deliberate and sinister music in the first meeting between Hyun and Joon Ho? And also again with the knife while cooking dinner? Some of it the setting look downright romantic, while the music is sinister. My head is so confused trying to work out these two extremes. Sheesh!

I feel like Prosecutor Shin suggested that maybe LJY isn't all that culpable after all, that he's actually a scapegoat in a bigger conspiracy, just that he became 'evil' when he tried to break out of the mess. That might be interested. Can we get DO back for more flashbacks, please?

I really like how Hyun revealed his vulnerability to Ji An and it's about time. I already love him, but I love him more for revealing his insecurities to Ji An (who, if she doesn't know it, is the one person he's been opening himself up to more and more). I just hope she doesn't hurt him the way his father did by revealing that she thought he was working with Joon Young. Which also doesn't explain her crush. But more on that later.

Team Leader Kang rocks! I'm glad he doesn't allow himself to get pushed around by Hyun.

Woah this drama is awesome! In 2015 I have been watching some drama here and there and never able to continue until the end (except for Angry Mom).

I cannot wait for the next episode and putting all the puzzle pieces together.
- So far, just like everyone else, I can assume who Lee Joon Ho and Lawyer Jung are.
- Team leader Kang outsmarted Hyeon 2 times! When everyone heading to third crime scene he already pursued Dae Young. Plus he tricked Hyeon to work with. Fluke? Real genius? Hidden intention to lure Hyeon?
- Who is actually Eun Bok?!?!
- Lawyer Jung wants to know Ji An better. Why? Attracted or simply wanted to use her?
- Why would Hyeon questioning Ji An's doubt? Is her trust become important for him?

Oh man.... I cannot wait for tuesday....

I love that even as the two get closer, there are still clearly secrets on both parts. A lot of times we get secrets on one side, but this set up is so much better--even if it's moot, because Hyun tends to guess Ji-An's secrets.

I like how Na-ra is playing her actually, and I'm really loving their dynamic! It's not exactly romantic yet, but the potential is obviously there, and there are more dynamics on top of that.

And the supporting cast is great here. They're not like all 100% aces or anything, but they're not the bumbling fools of Girl Who Sees Smells either (thank every god). The humor is great when they're providing it, and the interactions are all pretty natural! Even the really minor characters, like Ji-An's aunt, seem well placed here and in line with the tone of the story.

Loving this drama! ^^ This and Oh My Ghostess are prolly what I'm enjoying the most. They'll probably be my favorites of the year so far, if they keep it going at this rate. (I know, so early to say, especially with OMG. But my hopes are high!)

Sigh. There's a reason I usually stay away from dramas like I Remember You. I usually like watching something light, something that doesn't require too much brain power in order to take a break from school/job. But, it might be the psychopath in me, but I just can't walk away from I remember You, even if it's frustrating me to no end. Who is who? Why am I so suspicious of everyone?

I love the utilitarian example that was brought up. It definitely probes at the psyche of psychopaths -- they lack that empathy, emotional connection, and cuts straight to the cold, hard logic of things. I wouldn't say that things are so clear cut but it's a very good illustration of what our murderers might be thinking at the moment. Someone outlives their purpose (ahem Prosecutor Shin), they're no longer necessary and can be cleared away. People are thus seen as objects instead of humans by undermining their human value.

Team Leader Kang is someone i am unable to get his intensions....he make himself miserable so that even his team members doesn't give him much attension...but i think... things are not that simple as we are observing... he is clever enough to get Hyun under his team... he can easily now observe Hyun and Ji An... he caught criminal easly at procecutor shin's house single handedly... Eun Bok (one of the team member) he is also suspicious. Because he doesn't include himself in the list of those who first visit Detective Yang's place... so.. except Ji An and two more team members almost every one is fishy here atleast till now... and Doctor and lawyer is obviously Suspicious from the start.... so the Drama is going very well... sometimes i think it is easy to connect the links but sometimes i find myself furstrated... the writer has done good job so far... hope he coutinues... each and every character is well placed and important... every moment , every dialogue , every scenes has its meaning... this is mind blowing... i think this will be the best 2015 drama for me... So, my theory is that Jung-ha is Joon-young's son. It happened so quick, it was hard to notice. When the cops entered the apartment, they checked the pulses on both bodies, and thought they were both dead. That's when Jung-ha moved. Why would the cop think he was dead after checking his pulse? Because he inherited the undetectable pulse from his father.
It's also obvious to me that Joon-ho is Joon-young. When Lawyer Jung entered the hospital room, Joon-ho was stroking Jung-ha's hair. Why would he be doing that to a young man who is a stranger to him?
Interesting theory above about Eun-bok being a guard's son. But maybe it's the other way around, and Lawyer Jung is the guard's son, and Eun-bok is Min?

Woah, you really have a keen eye for details, Ahriah! Still, I don´t think Jung-ha is Joon-young´s son. First, Jung-ha´s dad is in prison and it sounds ridiculous to have your son masquerade as someone else´s just to pull a trick on Hyun years later. Jung-ha might as well be one of Joon-young´s pupils or as innocent as Hyun believes him to be, because Joon-young has manipulated him to think of himself as a monster.
Regarding Eun-bok/Min and Lawyer Jung/guard´s son. Also pretty intriguing possibility, but we have to wait on that. At the moment there´s not much to support it, besides Eun-bok´s slightly suspicious behavior. I personally hope we´re done with the sons and daughters of the two guards, Ji-an is enough.

Woah. I like your theory right there. It's possible. And the boy who killed was more of jung-ha's best friend, not a brother. I've always felt there was something fishy about "the family lives abroad" plot with the forensic guy and jung ha lives in a dormitory so it's absolutely possible. Also, jung ha was talking about the father son story to hyun like it was his own so convincingly. I was convinced he was the forensic guy's son until I thought that forensic guy poisoned (an assumption) jung ha at the hospital, afer which his body led to sepsis but there's no motive so it may have not been poisoning- just normal physical deterioration. Also, the almighty hand that literally fed jung ha to hyun feels too much to be the forensic guy. The guy that gave hyun's book was in a lab coat. I'm also fascinated by the use of the two wolves book. The mirroring theme is consistent all throughout the drama, from the framing of the scenes down to the subplots which seem to be plot drivers just as well. All in all, really good show. Episode 5 was a little bland but episode 6 kicked it up a few more notches for me. I'm onboard enough to devour recaps. Really good show.

I read higgins clark and dick francis thrillers in my youth and always my first hunches proved right. They throw in distracting characters, like eunbok this case, but it usually comes full circle back to doubt number 1.

I don't know yet but neither father nor J.young and absolutely not the kids.Because the footprint on blood stain was belong to an adult. There is someone else who behind the first serial killer case couse the purple flower was the same. About father, I think, he was suspicious about hyeon since then. thats why he assumed he is monster. Even he is not monster he is like magnetic for monsters. There was fierce violence in that scene so murder is someone they didn't know yet. What if hyeon accidentally did some mistake and that lead this disaster. And for his sake, father hide the corpse than he used fake evidence to capture j.young and blame him for mothers murder? Lastly fathers murederer is not j.young if he wasn't supposed to leave corpse behind him right? Then what is he doing? He is gathering monsters under someone esces order haha what a imagination :D

But if I'm not mistaking, yes, it's a child's print, presumably made from the slipper on the foot running away. But the next scene shows two footprints and the latter looks larger. Was that Hyun's following Min's? Was it an adult's running after Min/Hyun?

Hmm, so many questions. Now on to examine the lint in my naval...

Well i will highly praise your hypothesis... even i don't know that why i think that joon young didn't kill hyun's father.. we haven't much clear evidence of joon young killing hyun's father...okay.. we know they were fighting fiercly but in the end we haven't properly seen joon young killing his father... it can be joon young... but i am feeling that something is missing... Yeah there is always something missing and fishy about J.Young part so I Have a feeling that writers just wants us to think he is killer and evil without a doubt so we will label him as monster. So it would be more surprising if there is a real mastermind and he is also doctor. Supposing he gave a new identity to j.young to be forensics doctor and using the young guy in 6th episode as bait or something. In my point of view it would be more mysterious than knowing j.young is killer who became doctor miraculously and min is lawyer with potential of being killer. But i am fine both ways since i am curious what were they up to for years and why are they aiming Lee Hyeon :D oh and i can't say ji an is outstanding as character but maybe she is there to protect Hyeon from himself.

Oh Rejoycie I already missed you! Thank you for the recap. You saved my week and the wait. Gurl…

“The writer actually intends for the cases to be a window into our lead’s souls.” No one could say it more beautifully than this.

I didn’t really buy Hyun character at first because I thought he supposed to be the monster and his random more-human-side-traits seem not right. But the more we look at the window to our Hyun ('s sexy mind awww...), the more I understand and care for him. Hyun might just be an innocent victim in those harsh incidents on his past without any drops of some monster genes or traits. It could be indeed his little brother, Min, or the villain, Lee Joon Young, or even his own father, or something else we about to see in the upcoming eps, that marred his true self. Whatever it is show, now I’m fully onboard to see more revelations on our lead’s souls. I wanna feel them. Just like the last scene on this ep when Hyun asked Ji Ahn that very significant question, ugh… my feel.

And again, I’m so impressed at this drama that it made me wanting to comment on EVERY single element this show successfully delivers. How creepy is that Hyun-Joon Ho dinner, how intriguing is that Hyun’s mother’s death, how cute is that Hyun-Team Leader Kang banter, how funny is that Ji Ahn falsely thought of Hyun asking her to a date, and how poignant is that last scene, I love them all!

Oh and might I add this personal note to Seo In Guk. I got it, Gukkie. You just will never stop becoming more and more dashing in each eps. Bring it on to the finale! Let me take care of my bleeding nose myself. Sniff.

“But the more we look at the window to our Hyun (‘s sexy mind awww…), the more I understand and care for him.” That was exactly how Ji-An’s inner struggles developed as she peeped longer and longer into his soul-window, as she understand more, she cared more, she ached more.
“What kind of life would it be? Living with the dead family… as usual I don’t trust that guy, but, I am slightly hurting for him…” Nobody but Ji-An remembered what actually happened all these 20 years (beside Min of cause). All moves on in their life, and chose not to remember, even Hyeon himself blocked that part of his memories. Living with the dead will turn yourself dead inside. He sat with the imaginary dad and Min at meals, he “saw” dad reading with the 2 young brothers in the room, he walked pass dad’s corpse lying beside the coffee table…. All these, Ji-An knows. The beautiful thing in Ji-An is that she is able to empathise with Hyeon, even when she doesn’t completely trust him since heard whatever he said in the church confession box. To feel hurt for someone, to feel his agony is the very first step towards finally loving that person. She doesn’t allow her “distrust” to block her senses of sympathy and compassion to understand the root problem and struggles of anyone.
‘I Remembered, Stalker, You were her.…. It’s still fun to tease you back then and now.” Hyeon’s discovery of his stalker’s “hidden agenda”, strengthened his trust towards her, confirming what he suspected about her is accurate. Yet it opened up another problem…
H: “the reason why… you said you are a stalking fan, and hid the fact you followed me around… you could have just told me, but you didn’t, why?” “You are doubting me. You think perhaps I’m the same monster as LJY, or on the same side as LJY. You are doubting me like that. Are you not?” “How do I look from your perspective?”
“You can’t say: ‘No, I am not’.” Once again history repeated, so Ji-An was like the rest, doubting him? Even this girl? The deepest root problem is Hyeon doubted himself too, like what he said regarding Lee Jeong An doubting himself. Why he felt more empathised towards Jeong An, is because he found Jeong An was like Hyeon himself who feared the bad wolf within him. To feel hurt over what another person did, is allowing yourself to care about how that person feels, thus that person is starting to bear some weighs in your heart. The unfamiliar feeling of disappointment and hurt like how he felt over dad’s distrust haunt him again. Because there was yearning that at least this girl who was once persevered over his acceptance of friendship, will at least know him. The desire to be known and accepted and trusted…. reap more disappointment, hurt, and sadness. He smiled achingly. And again, its take Ji-An to know that she had hurt Hyeon, just like everyone else did. Hurting him was the last thing she will want. I think Prosecutor Shin is dead. My thought is that Min took him after he struck his brother on the head. I thought the person at the door looked like Lawyer Min in the quick flash they showed us.

The lilacs tie Hyun's dead mother with the recent serial killings. So, whose the connection responsible for the killings? Min or Joon young? Why did Hyun's father frame Joon young? My theory is that it is because Joon young murdered his wife and no one could prove it, because the bodies couldn't be found. And why was the prison so lax with the imprisonment of Joon young? Was it because he was arrested for robbery instead of the serial killings? Were both Min and Hyun present when their mother was killed? And what was the effect of their mother's death on Min? We already know how Hyun dealt with it, by erasing it from his memory. Did that event trigger Min's psychotic tendencies?

We have a piece of the puzzle but it only generates more questions. Which is why I love, admire and respect this show. Kudos to the writers for keeping us engaged.

I kind of feel like everyone who's saying there's an overarching mastermind--reminds me of the Japanese drama Hidarime Tantei EYE.

The boys in this show is so pretty. It's kinda distracting. :3

IRY reminds me of what I felt when I was watching Healer. I know it is not the same in any way but it brings back the feeling of wanting/itching to know what will happen next. That feeling when you're so intrigued with the story that you just wish it's Monday already. I just wish Korean viewers would appreciate this show more. 4% is seriously low :((

Love love Ji An and Hyun. It's so cute that she's so petite and he, on the other hand, has this sexy broad shoulders. Gawd, I'm drooling already enev though there's no romantic scenes yet.

I'm really sure that Lawyer Jung is Min. But I'm not entirely sold with the Joon Ho = Joon Young theory although I know that the doctor is most likely Joon Young because this is dramaland. They just don't have any physical resemblance. Unless Joon Young had a major growth spurt, Joon Ho is too tall to be him.

I was looking forward to this show because it was liked the Korean version of BBC Sherlock, but the crime cases are a bit underwhelming right now... The only thing that is keeping me is the mystery behind is past to be honest. Though I admit Seo In Guk does have the chemistry with Jang Na Ra

I am always I treated in the book the characters read in the dramas. But the book they read in thus one isn't the three little pigs it's a native Amarican story. There are different versions but it's either Cherokee or Naticoke. Thanks for awesome recaps!!!!
