Oh My Ghostess: Episode 8

I’m such a fool for this show right now. It’s just found that pitch-perfect groove of story, performances, and heart, and I’ve gone from finding it sweet and fun to falling for it completely. The key is really in the relationship between ghost and host, and today we see the potential for what began as an antagonistic relationship to very well become the most heartfelt bond of all.

EPISODE 8 RECAP

Once it sinks in that Bong-sun has just given her permission to possess her, Soon-ae bounds over to give Bong-sun a giant bear hug, squealing in delight. Bong-sun stands there stiffly with her fists clenched, while Soon-ae lifts her up and calls her pretty, and declares that they should be friendly now: “Call me unni!”

Soon-ae shows her Dad’s restaurant from across the street and says that it might not look like much now, but used to have lines of cab drivers out the door every day. She sighs that if she’d known she’d die so young, she would’ve done more, had a boyfriend, lived like everyone else.

Bong-sun asks why she died, but Soon-ae doesn’t know since she has no memory of her death. Soon-ae asks in turn why she suddenly changed her mind, and Bong-sun admits that she used to be satisfied just watching Chef from far away, but now she wants more.

Soon-ae encourages her to keep wanting more from life, and to stop holding everything in: “Live like a person, Na Bong-sun!” She says that they’re one body now, and eggs Bong-sun on to be more assertive.

Bong-sun mimics her “Fighting” cheer, and soon they’re shouting, “Fightiiiiiing!” at the top of their lungs and skipping side by side down the street. I love that they’re friends now.

In the morning, it’s definitely Soon-ae inside Bong-sun’s body, because the first thing she does is sidle up to Sun-woo and ask, “I read this in a magazine somewhere—is it true that a man is most… vital between ten and eleven in the morning?”

Hahahaha, she actually looks right at his crotch while asking the question. He hurriedly crosses his legs, which just makes her convinced that it IS true.

So-hyung is mortified to remember her impulsive drunken kiss with Sun-woo as she heads to work, and Sun-woo picks up his phone to call her, but hesitates.

The restaurant will be closed for the next two days, and kitchen staff excitedly discusses their vacation plans. Sous chef Min-soo seems at a loss for what to do, not that he lets on—he keeps asking what the others are doing, wanting to tag along. Soon-ae is happy to learn that they have vacation days, and when she pushes Min-soo out of the way, the boys decide she’s back to being weird.

Mom brings the medium unni some porridge (since she lied that she was sick), and Unni eats ravenously. Mom just wants her to hurry up and get better because she has no other friends to hang out with, and Unni starts to feel a pang of guilt at avoiding her on top of everything.

Mom notices that Unni isn’t looking her in the eye, and Unni asks casually if her son is okay, and hasn’t suddenly passed out or anything. She insists that she was just asking, but is relieved to hear that Sun-woo is fine.

Min-soo calls his buddy and erupts in a whiny tantrum when his friend says he can’t get the next two days off to hang out. The others listen warily and agree to avoid Min-soo before he invites himself along on one of their vacations, and it works… until Min-soo goes straight to Chef to suggest a staff retreat.

The others are horrified at the thought of spending their precious days off with their boss but can’t voice their dissent now, and agree through gritted teeth. Soon-ae chirps that she thinks it’s a great idea, and at that, Sun-woo says they’ll go.

Soon-ae watches intently as Sun-woo answers a call from So-hyung. She says she’ll head over to his neighborhood for a chat, and when Sun-woo heads out to meet her, Soon-ae trails after him thinking she’s being stealthy (I don’t know how—she’s practically stepping on his feet).

He calls her out from behind a potted plant and tells her to go home, and she swears that she wasn’t following him, but going to the neighborhood restaurant to see her ajusshi friend. He makes her walk ahead of him then, and she grumbles.

So-hyung looks nervous as she starts to mention last night, but Sun-woo jumps in to say that she must’ve had so much to drink that she can’t remember a thing. She looks partly relieved to be let off the hook but mostly disappointed, and the air between them is soooooo awkward, I can barely watch.

Soon-ae brings popsicles over to Dad and ignores little bro Kyung-mo’s complaints about the last time that she pretended not to know them. She makes sure that Dad is still exercising and says she can’t go for the next few days because of her retreat.

Kyung-mo suddenly reacts like a jealous boyfriend, worried that she’ll be spending nights away with a bunch of guys, and tells her not to bare too much skin or put on lipstick, and to call him every night so that he doesn’t worry. Soon-ae just looks at him like he’s got a screw loose.

Sun-woo calls his brother-in-law Sung-jae out for a drink, and sighs that he wished Eun-hee would join them on the retreat. He wanted to insist she come along, but she didn’t want to be a burden. Sun-woo remembers how much she used to love going on trips, and asks if it’s too late to hope for any progress on her hit-and-run case.

Sung-jae says too much time has passed for that, but assures Sun-woo that Eun-hee has him now, so it’s okay. Sun-woo is appeased by that, and Sung-jae lets his smile fade for a split-second when Sun-woo isn’t looking.

Soon-ae steps out of Bong-sun’s body that night so that she can update her on what’s going on, and Bong-sun is a little shocked at Soon-ae’s plan to seduce Chef at the retreat, but quickly starts throwing out ideas for how to get it done.

Bong-sun says he’ll have to get a separate room and she’ll go buy a new slip to wear, and Soon-ae stares at her in shock. They high-five, giddy with excitement.

The Sun staff arrives at the lakeside pension, where the owners greet them warmly. Their young daughter joins them and points over at Bong-sun and asks, “Why is there another unni inside that unni?” Ruh-roh. Soon-ae plays dumb, and the parents hurry the girl away.

They start to unload the cars, and Min-soo stacks so many boxes in Soon-ae’s arms that she can’t even see over the top of them. Joon takes them from her and complains that Min-soo is treating her badly.

Min-soo gets mad at Joon for daring to talk back, and asks if he’s Bong-sun’s boyfriend or something. Joon: “What, are boyfriends the only ones allowed to talk back? Fine, I’ll be her boyfriend then!” What? Aaah, why so cute?!

Soon-ae gasps and skips off after him, calling him “Boyfriend,” and playfully declaring that today is the first day of their relationship. Sun-woo pretends like it doesn’t affect him, but he suddenly looks so glum.

They grill out by the lake, and Sun-woo suggests a survival cooking game where the winner gets to put a dish on next month’s menu and gets two days off. They all make a mad dash for ingredients and start creating their dishes, and when Soon-ae gets praised for her knife skills, Sun-woo puffs up to hear her say she has a really great teacher.

Sun-woo announces that the finalists are Joon and Min-soo, and the others clearly favor Joon’s dish because they recognize that Min-soo’s is almost identical to something they serve at their restaurant.

They drumroll as they wait for Sun-woo’s verdict. The outcome seems obvious, except when Sun-woo sees Soon-ae chanting Joon’s name and cheering for him so affectionately, he calls out Min-soo’s name instead. Pffft, I love that he’s THAT petty.

Everyone except Min-soo is confused, and even Sun-woo knows he’s talking out of his ass when he explains why Min-soo’s dish was better.

The mood is lively after many rounds of drinks, and Sun-woo heads out to go buy more liquor when they run out. Soon-ae sneaks off to join him, and says she’s here to protect him from virgin ghosts. Sun-woo: “Who’s protecting whom? You’re the most dangerous thing here.”

He’s confused when she insists on taking a bicycle, and the ghost-seeing girl watches them from around the corner with a mischievous look in her eye. It’s doubly confusing when Soon-ae gets so frustrated at his slowness that she takes over, suddenly riding a bike like it’s no big deal. Him riding in the back makes for a funny visual too.

It’s dark by the time they’re heading back, and Soon-ae says that it used to be her dream to move to the country and open up a tiny restaurant. Sun-woo says she could still do that, but she says it’s too late, refusing to elaborate on why.

She notices that his shoelace is untied, so she stoops down to retie it using her special knot that never comes undone. He gets all quiet and awkward while she does it, and agrees that it won’t come undone easily.

She links her arm through his and declares their sneakers couple shoes now, and refuses to let go knowing that he has his hands occupied walking the bike. He tells her to stop crawling up on him, so she actually starts climbing him like a tree, which is when So-hyung suddenly calls out to them. What? Okay, you are officially a killjoy now.

So-hyung says she was in the area on a location scout and thought she’d drop by, and Soon-ae makes no effort to hide her distaste for her, muttering loudly that companies sure are lax on their employees these days.

The guys are happy to see So-hyung and welcome her eagerly, much to Soon-ae’s annoyance. It turns out that Drunk Joon is like the Cookie Monster but for liquor, and has to be put to bed before he embarrasses himself further.

Back in town, Eun-hee and Sung-jae get dressed up to meet her friends at a reunion dinner, and Mom tells them to have a good time. Medium Unni arrives to hang out with Mom and meets Sung-jae for the first time, and something about him makes her face pale. As they leave, she mutters to herself that she’s never seen a ki that strong before.

Eun-hee catches up with her friends, who all sigh that she was the one with the brightest future of all of them. They ask if she still hasn’t caught the hit-and-run culprit, and one of the girls says that whoever it is deserves to be ripped apart until they die.

Sung-jae says he’ll wait outside as if giving Eun-hee time alone with her friends, but heads out to the parking lot where he locates that girl’s car and keys it, looking completely placid as he does it.

Both Soon-ae and So-hyung get caught in a drinking game and offer up their shots to Sun-woo to drink for them, and instead of choosing, he downs both shots and calls it a night. Soon-ae makes sure that Sun-woo gets his own room, and interrupts So-hyung while she’s in the middle of asking if Sun-woo wants to go for a walk.

The girls have to share a room after all that, making for a very tense night. Soon-ae wonders passive-aggressively why So-hyung came all this way just to join in on someone else’s work retreat, and So-hyung counters that she can’t understand why Bong-sun lives in that storage room in the restaurant.

Soon-ae: “Why are you so interested in where I sleep?” So-hyung: “Why are you so bothered by my being here?” They lie down in a huff, then spend the bulk of the night making sure the other one doesn’t sneak out, and trying to stay awake and outlast the other.

The night wears on, and So-hyung finally falls asleep first, giving Soon-ae the chance to sneak into Sun-woo’s room. She goes straight for his bed and snuggles up in his arms, and though she startles him awake, it’s not like he makes a move to un-snuggle her or anything.

She makes the excuse that So-hyung snores so loudly that she can’t sleep in her room, and Sun-woo just stares at her for a while before asking if she’s taken her meds. He wrestles her free and drags her out of the room, and she flings them down on the couch so that he lands on top of her.

When he drags her up again, she asks loudly if he has some kind of prejudice against sex, and he clamps a hand over her mouth and wonders if he needs to take her to the hospital again.

They head outside when they hear the pension owners calling out for their daughter, who’s gone missing. The mother says that she’s not right in the head and worries that she’ll cause trouble again. Sun-woo and Soon-ae help search for her, and Soon-ae finds her in the woods, talking to someone (an invisible someone) about finding the kids. Well that’s creepy.

She takes off in a run and Soon-ae chases her all the way to a cold storage warehouse, where the little girl locks her inside because she’s a ghost. She skips off back to her parents, and then Sun-woo goes off in search of Bong-sun.

Soon-ae decides that they can’t just sit here and freeze, so she ejects herself from Bong-sun and tells her that she’ll figure something out. She passes through the wall and tries to focus all her energy on lifting the lock, but can’t manage it because it’s so heavy. But then she notices the firecracker and lighter that she dropped on the way in, and succeeds in picking up the lighter.

By now two hours have passed, and Sun-woo gets everyone else up to help look for Bong-sun. Min-soo complains about being dragged out in the middle of the night, and Sun-woo snaps at him that one of their family is missing.

He’s at his wit’s end, when suddenly the firecracker goes off in the distance. Sun-woo knows right away that it’s Bong-sun and takes off in a mad dash. He finds the lit firecracker but no one around, and Soon-ae dashes back into the warehouse to get back in Bong-sun’s body and call out for help.

He pries the door open and grabs her in a fierce hug, awash in relief. D’aw. She’s startled and says she’s okay, and the other boys all dash in behind him. Sun-woo suddenly barks at her, all of his worry coming out in one long angry rant: “Are you crazy?! Were you thinking at all? What are you doing in here? Why would you come in here? I told you not to be so careless! Why don’t you listen to me?!”

She starts to make excuses, but he tells her there’s no way she’s okay after being trapped in here for two hours, and takes off his sweater to put around her shoulders. Joon suggests getting her out of here and offers to piggyback her, but Sun-woo stoops down to put her on his back first, and carries her out.

He mutters that her body is too cold for her to be fine, and the rest of the guys trudge along behind them, wondering how that firecracker went off by itself and why Chef is so mad. Min-soo speculates that he must’ve been upset about the possible hospital bill, while Joon looks over at Sun-woo and Bong-sun with a knowing look. Poor Joonie.

So-hyung paces outside waiting for news, but when Sun-woo returns, he just walks right past her. They pack up and say their goodbyes in the morning, and the little girl waves goodbye to the unni-inside-the-unni, and Soon-ae tells her not to cause any more trouble. So-hyung asks Sun-woo for a ride to the broadcast station, and finally gets some time alone with him.

At the police station, Sung-jae’s colleague asks when his birthday is, because he might have a really great present for him. He announces that he found a top-notch technician to take another stab at fixing the broken CCTV from the time of Eun-hee’s hit-and-run, and Sung-jae looks taken aback. He stops the other cop from calling Sun-woo and says he’ll call directly, and the friend heads out to go pick up the hard drive. Uh-oh…

Sun-woo drops So-hyung off at work, and she finally asks if he isn’t curious why she came all the way to his retreat. She guesses that he is curious but just afraid to ask, because he already knows what she’s going to say. She asks if the reason he’s drawing a line between them has anything to do with Bong-sun, and when he hesitates to answer, she takes it back, regretting having asked.

Sung-jae’s cop friend picks up the repaired hard drive, and then finds that his car suddenly won’t start. He gets out to look under the hood, when someone attacks him from behind, knocking him unconscious (or dead?), and smashes the hard drive underfoot. Curiously, we never see the attacker’s face.

Soon-ae paces nervously, wondering if Sun-woo is taking so long to get back because So-hyung is up to no good. She’s relieved when he returns, though less excited when he wants to go right back to the kitchen for more cooking lessons.

She complies for a while, but when she starts to complain about not feeling well, Sun-woo is worried enough to stop their lesson. He tells her to clean up, and she brightens up immediately. She stops to ask him why he got so mad last night, and he tenses up to be asked so openly.

She asks again but he can’t say anything in response, and he finally blurts that he didn’t want her causing accidents at the pension too. He snaps at her to clean up and stop asking questions, looking rattled at his own feelings.

Soon-ae comes back with the hose but loses her grip on it when more water shoots out than she expected, and they both get doused before Sun-woo runs out to turn the water off. It’s not the most inventive trope, but now I see why Mom warned him to stay away from water.

He grabs towels and tells her to come closer so he can dry her off. With his arms around her and almost no space between them, the air shifts, and Soon-ae actually gets a little shy and backs away.

Sun-woo stares at her intently for a long moment before yanking on the towel around her back, and pulls her in for a kiss. Holy swoon, Batman.

He kisses her again and again, and then suddenly… Soon-ae takes a step back, out of Bong-sun’s body. Omo. Bong-sun’s eyes widen to find herself mid-kiss with Sun-woo, as Soon-ae backs away from them.

COMMENTS

I love everything about that last scene. Okay, the kiss is great, obviously, but it’s Soon-ae’s sudden decision to back off that gave me chills. For all of Soon-ae’s big talk about getting laid and jumping Chef’s bones, when it comes down to it, she’s still a virgin who has no real experience with love or relationships. She’s possessed other women and put guys in the hospital trying to get past second base, but no one’s ever kissed her that way before—sincerely, lovingly.

And obviously we could find out next week that something else drove her to eject herself from the situation, but I felt like Sun-woo’s sincerity moved her, to the point that she realized that this was Bong-sun’s moment, her relationship, her first real kiss with him. It’s what I hope anyway, because the other alternative is that she might be falling for him in return, which is definitely stickier. Maybe his sincerity rattled her, or maybe she felt wrong taking it from Bong-sun, but the fact that she removes herself willingly makes me think that she’s come a long way and actually might see Bong-sun as a person and a friend, and not just a convenient vessel.

Now that Bong-sun and Soon-ae are in cahoots and beginning to influence each other, it finally feels like the show is doing everything I wanted it to. The fact that the romance is hitting that first moment of realization at the same time is just gravy, because it proves how little Bong-sun actually needs Soon-ae to make Chef fall in love with her. He’s doing that just fine all by himself, but we gain an adorable friendship between the girls anyway. Soon-ae brings Bong-sun out of her shell and encourages her to be fearless, and Soon-ae is finally starting to look beyond herself and consider Bong-sun’s feelings.

I’m so delighted at the synergy between these two women, and how much they’ve already begun to adopt the other’s traits without realizing it. This was the kind of character growth I’ve been dying to see, and it was so worth the wait. Now it feels like Soon-ae is Bong-sun’s cheerleader and big sister, and I love that Bong-sun seems less alone in the world.

I like that Joon is asserting himself a little more, though I still feel like he’s underused in this drama. But now his one-sided feelings for Bong-sun seem pretty clear, at long last. The second leads in this drama sure do take their sweet time figuring out their feelings. It took long enough that there’s no hope for So-hyung or Joon to actually wedge their way between Sun-woo and Bong-sun now, but today they served a crucial purpose in making them jealous enough to do something about it, which you can’t help but appreciate.

Mostly it was Sun-woo’s worried outburst that made everything click for him, not that he was even in a whole lot of denial about his feelings to begin with. He went from chasing her away to worrying about her, to actively finding excuses to be together all the time. Once he was the one inventing reasons to have her stick to him like glue, he was already a goner, really. The question is, now that real feelings are involved, will Soon-ae find it difficult to just borrow Bong-sun’s body and do the deed? Maybe it won’t, but it seems like making Sun-woo want her has actually made the situation more complicated for all of them. Did love just put the brakes on sex? How ironic.

Fun show. I saw on wiki ep 7 had a nielsen rating of 3.8. Is this still considered good for a cable show or has that standard increased (due in large part to Na PD's shows pulling in big 3 network numbers). Just curious if this is well received in Korea as it is here on this site.

Yes it is way too good actually!! Anything above 1% for cable is already a success.. So this drama is awesome in terms of ratings as I've seen as high into the 4's

Oh, but I've got a question. I really thought Sung Jae was possessed by an evil spirit, but the medium just said he had unusually strong ki (energy?). Wouldn't she see if he was possessed? It almost sounded like he was a medium also, because she said something about his ki being stronger than hers.

I think they've established that when a ghost possesses a human body, the ghost stops being visible (at least to the shaman...the creepy little girl in this episode is a different story.) For example, the shaman met Soon-Ae in Bong-Sun's body a few times before she finally figured out that Bong-Sun was possessed, and only then because of the sound of the bells. If Sung-Jae is possessed by an evil spirit, I don't think the shaman would know just by looking, though she definitely senses something wrong.

That's right! I forgot the shaman had to put the bells on soon ae so she could recognize her. I swear the spirit in Sun Jae is PD Lee's dead boyfriend (and therefore Sun Woo's former friend).

Oh, wow, I never even considered that before! That would be amazing if true--well, amazing for the story. Less so for poor Sun-Woo, who has to deal with both his beloved brother-in-law AND his former friend being responsible for his sister's paralysis (and Soon-Ae's death.)

The more I think about it, the more sure I am that you're right!

0

The only thing that might ruin the theory is that on Sun Woo's friend's urn, it says he died before 2010... like, 2007 or 2004 or something (can't remember the last digit, lol). This tells me that the spirit inside Sung Jae probably isn't the dead friend, unless he's been in there for nearly a decade. If it is as your theory states, then how in the world did Sung Jae as an evil spirit come to marry SW's sister? Just because he's responsible for the hit-and-run? That makes little sense.

I'm staying puzzling over how long the evil spirit was inside Sung Jae when Soon-Ae was alive and crushing on him, if Soon-Ae fell in love with the real Sung Jae or with tthe imposter who pretended to be nice.

Thank you for bringing the Shaman's ghost possession blindness and the girl's clear seeing together.

When put in contrast it suddenly makes that pointless encounter with the little girl makes sense. I am assuming that somewhere down the line in the narrative precocious little girl will meet Sung Jae and recognize that there is a unnie or an oppa inside that oppa.

I like how the show is establishing different levels of other- worldly awareness and ability to interact with and control the supernatural.

Perhaps Sung Jae is just a psychopath and Soon Ae just happened to witness just another random act of violence, i.e. hit-and-run of Sun Woo's sister as she was stalking him. Naturally, he had to "take care" of her hence the drowning.

0

Maybe it's got to do with the three years evil thing - maybe a ghost possessed him, and unlike Soon-Ae was not kicked out by a fever so was trapped, and then got stuck AND evil. So it's now an evil spirit wearing a human suit?

There are a bunch of different possible combos of car crash and deaths, but I do think there's an older-than-three-years spirit in possession.

I was thinking about the friend, it could be that we're looking in too deep. Maybe they only showed the friend to show the relationship between SH and Sun-Woo and nothing more?

I agree with you. I think the dead friend was just there to show why and how come Sun Woo is still single. They needed to add an ex-girlfriend to spice up the show. The whole my-first-love-ended-with-my-bestfriend story line is just an ingredient to this delicious drama.
Soon Ae's death and Creepy Sung Jae are another ingredient.

just my two cents

do you guys realized in epi 7 that they showed to us Sung Jae eat a lot of bread when Chef came to his mother house? is it just a coincidence or is it one of the hint that he's being possessed?

So, voluntary possession means Soon Ae can come and go as per her (or Bong Soon?) will, is it? I am talking of course about the moment in the storage and the ending. If they (un-possessed Bong Soon)were  Soon Ae doing, it was a leap and bound growth of her. From I don’t care attitude to this.

Wow, this is the most hilarious episode ever. This Soon Ae wanted to sneak out of the room she shared with PD Lee so she could jumped at SW….and her-oh-not-so-petty banter with PD Lee gave me stitches. I love sassy Soon Ae.

I think this is the moment where SW realized his true feeling for Bong Soon. He was so mad with worry when he found her in the storage. And it is also heartwarming when Soon Ae the one who saved Bong Soon although it was because of her possession that little girl locked Bong Soon in the storage.

I actually thought she was kicked out of the body too. It was weird for her to be so into the kiss and then suddenly choose to step out. Her expression looked a little more surprised and confused to me as well, since she kept looking down at herself, as though she couldn't quite figure out why she was back there again. I thought maybe the wavelength thing rejected her, because the kissing/virginity thing wasn't really the source of her grudge. Guess we'll see next week though!

About the funny ... it's so good the way these funny lines are slotted in so matter-of-factly and are so funny because so unintentionally true.

- Song with insulting lyrics directed at Sous Chef... and although he slapped the singer, he ended up enjoying the song, not knowing that the insults really were aimed at him.

- SA to Chef "I'll protect you from virgin ghosts." SW: "What, you?...you're the most dangerous person here!"

- SA to Chef on the bike "It's not that I'm heavy that you can't cycle, it's because your bottom half is weak." LOLOL!

- Ep 7 Chef's mother cannot even toast bread!!! but since they were only half burnt, Sung Jae said, "Mother, you've improved!" LOLOL. Perhaps it was a reaction to his mother's lack of cooking ability that Sun Woo became the great chef he is. :)

Thank you for the recap! God, I just love this show so much.

I thought that SA leaving BS's body at the end wasn't voluntary, but that something about the kiss kicked her out. She kind of looked down at herself as if thinking, "Wait, am I out again?" Of course, I'm not sure why that would be, since SW has kissed her before. But maybe it's because this kiss is sincere? I don't know.

What I do know is that kiss was hot, especially when he pulled her closer.

I love that SA and BS are now friends! And I was totally cracking up at SA's misuse of the word "hermaphrodite" at the beginning.

Ok, here's my prediction: SW and/or BS will realize they can't be romantically involved if he's her boss, so she'll leave and go work at SA's dad's restaurant, using her new skills to turn it back into a success.

@ Gaelicmaiden,

About this, "What I do know is that kiss was hot, especially when he pulled her closer."

+ 1. Sometimes, the male leads are forceful in their kisses in Kdramas, and we are supposed to think (I feel) that it is romantic. I have been told by a blogger who currently lives in Korea that some female viewers find that kind of aggression (is it considered being assertive maybe? Or knowing what you want?) romantic. And I am not saying that only female viewers in Korea would think so, about (what I view to be) forceful kisses, I am just sharing a point from a conversation we once had.

What I personally loved about the fact that he pulled her in, and HOW he pulled her in was that it told me (at least) two things: 1-SW is physically attracted to BS (just got another confirmation of that), and 2-he didn't yank her in, he (gently) pulled her in, and that might sound silly, however that looked so tender and sensual to me. I could tell that SW really (physically) liked BS, yet, I loved that since he ended up kissing BS as BS (in the 2nd 1/2 of the kiss), I was glad that he was gentle and tender with her, since this is new to her, and she can still be shy a times. This might be a small thing, yet I hope I made sense. I personally love it when the writers write scenes, taking into consideration the personality of their characters, at a point in time in the drama. It seemed to have been the case with this scene. It was to me, at least.

About this, "Ok, here’s my prediction: SW and/or BS will realize they can’t be romantically involved if he’s her boss, so she’ll leave and go work at SA’s dad’s restaurant, using her new skills to turn it back into a success."
That sounds like a great idea, except for the fact that SW has been teaching her stuff so she can become a better chef. In your prediction, would SW continue to be her cooking instructor? It would allow her to get close to SA's dad, and since she lost her parents, they could become adopted father and daughter, which I think SA's dad might love. SA's brother's reaction would be hilarious though (I would love to see that).

That kiss was so hawt. SW gentleness and the respect made it awesome. Even though BS [as far as SW knows] has been aggressively pursuing SW for weeks, the time he took pulling her toward him, gave her an opportunity to back away, if she so choose.

And being as smart woman-she did no so choose.

i love that he didn't YANK her, he more like tugged her and pulled her gently, if she theoretically didn't want to kiss him, she could've resisted and his physical hold on her wasn't strong enough to stop her from resisting.

That's what I first thought too.

The show has barely established any rules about how possession works, but it may well be that there are limits to what a ghost possessing a body can do.

It may also be a signal that having sex with a human is not the resolution to Soon-ae's grudge. Because the one body she could possess and that she could use to achieve her mission ejected her. If it really was an involuntary ejection, then she'll have to completely reassess her situation now because has plan has just gone to pieces.

@ Karin

Wow didn't think the kiss could've been the trigger! But then that makes Soon Ae's death even sadder if she did kiss before she died...

0

Agreed. When I was watching the last scene and saw Soon-ae st ep back, my first thought was that it happened because her grudge isn't about still being a virgin.

Part of my reasoning was because of a previous conversation I think she had with her father, but could have been Bong-sun, where she said that being a virgin isn't just a horrible thing, so she's not sure why she's tried so hard to stick around and fix it. She had no memory of who she was or how she died, so it's reasonable to think she wouldn't know there was another purpose for her staying put.

That is such an adorable prediction. I would have no problem with her leaving the restaurant to go work at SA's father's place because I really, really want her to bond with that family, because I think the father truly needs it.

I'm just a bit skeptical because it is SW's restaurant, so if he wants to date one of his own workers that's totally his prerogative since he makes the rules (not to mention he never kicked her out when she was seducing him). What I'd like to see happen is for him to keep getting distracted by her (messing up orders, cutting himself, daydreaming, etc), which causes him to temporarily chase her away so he can get his head back on straight, since the restaurant's literally affected, lol.

I actually thought she was booted too. The way she kept looking down at her body, as though surprised to find herself back in ghost-form, showed pretty clearly that she was confused about what just occurred. Plus that makes more sense narratively, since she's already proven to be respectful of BS's body (to an extent), so finding herself suddenly locked out does much more for the actual plot. Now she has to figure out why she was booted, and start figuring out what her true grudge is!

Also, that kiss! *swoon* I had it on constant replay!!

That's exactly what I thought. I don't think Soon-ae voluntarily walked out from Bongsun's body, because there's some shocked and confused expression indicating that she herself didn't know why she's out there again.
But other than sincerity of this kiss, I was thinking of the possibility that it might be because of Bongsun's "ki" has become stronger that Soon-ae was kicked out of Bongsun's body. Like what Bongsun said at the beginning of this episode.

Well, let's wait for the next episode to see whether our guesses were right. :)

Thank you for the recap! I really liked this ep., though it left me with some questions. It seems that SW has fallen for BS, (especially) based on his (extremely) angry outburst, when he saved her from that cold freezer-like room (can’t remember the exact name right now). I actually loved seeing SW that angry, since it confirmed to the viewers how deep he had fallen for BS. I felt bad for BS however, since she had been locked in by no fault of her own. What was that little girl thinking, besides wanting to lock the ghost in? She didn’t realize that (or think that) the person who is alive (BS) could freeze to death. Good thing there was those firecrackers on the floor (that SA noticed earlier), and those matches (I think there were matches?)

I am also a little surprised at SH’s (or is it SY?) strong interest in SW these days. Is it more of a plot device, or could she have become so strongly attracted to SW now? I guess that thing they say about becoming more attractive (to your love interest), when you are looking somewhere else (aka “when you are attracted to someone else”), is true? That has never happened to me, so I wouldn’t know.

And I feel bad for Cordon Bleu boy, he genuinely cares for BS, and yet he gets “punished” for it. 1st-when his dish was not chosen in the contest, and 2nd-when SW chose to piggyback BS himself. Better luck next time?

Finally, like many viewers, I am curious about whether SA ejected herself from the body, or if BS’s body pushed her out. She looked quite surprised, when she realized that she was out of BS’s body. Some have said that she even looked sad… Did she? I was not sure about that. My favorite moments in that scene: 1-the way SW looked at BS when she was so close to him, 2-the kiss itself (so sensual. JJS sure knows how to kiss for the camera), AND the fact that SW pulled BS in, as he was kissing her. There was something in the way that SW pulled BS in. And I felt that it was a good first kiss for BS (as BS, when SA was out of her body), considering who she is (her personality). I liked this kiss more than how the first one started. This kiss had a gentleness, tenderness, and a sensuality that I felt were palpable. Was I the only one who saw that in this kiss?

The little girl: just very random. She had the flatness of being pure plot device – purpose only being to bring the leads closer together.

SH is just totally off. Who inserts him/herself into someone else's Team Training event? And invites herself overnight? And then asks the chef stupid questions. I find her very pathetic and, again, she feels like a plot device. And yes, her interest in SH just suddenly exploded, leading her to behave like a teenage girl rather than a grown-up and, what seemed up to now, professional woman. I guess there's still the off-chance that she'll have some importance in relation to the death of her husband/boyfriend (as I still think that death may be connected to Soon-ae's/Eun-hee's injury) but I'm just don't see why we needed a love rival storyline.

i do agree that it's a bit of a pity since i liked her as the cool, professional woman who sun-woo had fallen in love with at first sight, the best friend's girl, but there were always hints that theirs was a mutual attraction that they didn't act on because of their deceased friend (ex. asking him in for coffee, etc.) so i don't think it came out of nowhere. she was taken aback by how hotly sun-woo argued for bong-sun to stay on the show. all these little things piling up, and noticing sun-woo express interest toward someone, maybe for the first time, has shaken her. the drunken confession mortified her also, but it at least changed things between them. she probably reckoned she had more to gain than lose, especially with the relationship between bong-sun and sun-woo strengthening beyond her expectations.
so even though i don't like it that much (how her character became), i understand it on a story level. love rivals are nice to have in rom-coms.

It didn't come out of nowhere, but it did rather just explode. She might be spurred on by Sun-woo's new interest in Bong-su but she could have just confessed to him, rather than doing a drunken-confession-kiss followed by stalking him at a work event (there's no way she just was in the "vicinity" by chance). She acted like a normal, professional at the beginning with a one-sided crush (happens), and turned into a pathetic teenager asking manipulative questions (going on a date to see if you can get a reaction out of the person you actually like is pretty immature). At best Sun-woo is going to pity her (very likely, since he's a nice guy and good friend), at worst he might start finding her annoying or even creepy.

I don't understand it on a story level other than "K-dramas must have love rivals" and/or lazy writing. There's is nothing at the moment that this love line really adds to the drama. It isn't needed to bring Sun-woo and Bong-su closer together. It doesn't really add any real tension either. I guess it gives us a few laughs with Soon-ae's animosity but it's such an overdone side story that it's just boring to me. The only hope I can hold out for is that her husband's death matters somehow which is why we need this character to appear again and again (though, again, did her presence really require a love line?).

what annoys me a bit is how sun-woo's interest in her has suddenly disappeared the moment she starts showing interest in him. granted, it was a bit of a pathetic confession, but he's supposed to have loved her from afar ever since he was a student and he was so jealous about her senior hitting on her too just a few episodes ago. i think this disappearance of his interest was more sudden than her pursuit of him, even as we were able to see sun-woo slowly falling for bong-sun/soon-ae. even though i'm not necessarily wanting the reciprocation on a story level, since obviously i'm not rooting for that couple. it just struck me as being a bit too sudden for me.

i agree that it's not original, but i think it was needed in order to spark bong-sun's "greed" and subsequent pact with soon-ae to make him her man instead of being content with liking him from a distance. they are both fearful of each other's presence in sun-woo's life. i guess it also adds a bit of complexity bc of how sun-woo carries the guilt for having liked his deceased friend's girlfriend, and also parallel how he and bong-sun have always liked people from afar, adding another similarity between them. i like love lines when it's two guys (or more) with one girl, resulting in petty and or heartbreaking jealousy. done well, of course, not with the characters treating the girl like an object to fight over. which sounds paradoxical but can be done. or well-developed complicated lovelines (ex. saikou no rikon). but yeah, i'm tired of second female leads transforming into crazy manipulative, "bitchy" women who are the polar opposite to the pure, sweet heroine.

0

<sun-woo’s interest in her has suddenly disappeared the moment she starts showing interest in him

Yes, I did think that as well. Although I'm not sure if he really was interested in her now or if his interest was more a nostalgic longing for "missed moment" of the past.

<but i think it was needed in order to spark bong-sun’s “greed” and subsequent pact with soon-ae to make him her man instead of being content with liking him from a distance.

Well, I struggle with that because Bong-sun's turn from silent admirer to "Yeah, please have sex with him for me" is too big a jump for a girl so shy and inexperienced in relationships as her (and not logical: having sex isn't in any way a guarantee that he'll become her boyfriend).

I don't think So-hyung will turn crazy manipulative though. Just a bit stupidly immature, not full-blown evil.

0

"Although I'm not sure if he really was interested in her now or if his interest was more a nostalgic longing for "missed moment" of the past."
^nostalgia might have been a part of it, like it was almost a habit because of how long their relationship was, but i'm pretty sure it was a genuine romantic interest seeing as he mistook bong-sun for so-hyung and kissed her, the petty hiding of the car keys, soon-ae's ability to effectively blackmail sun-woo with the knowledge that he likes her, etc.

"Well, I struggle with that because Bong-sun's turn from silent admirer to "Yeah, please have sex with him for me" is too big a jump for a girl so shy and inexperienced in relationships as her (and not logical: having sex isn't in any way a guarantee that he'll become her boyfriend)."
^i think i'm okay with this because i've always thought that she wasn't actually shy and timid, deep down inside- it was just sort of came about naturally from her trauma of seeing ghosts. but soon-ae keeps the ghosts away, and having a friend in her, the first friendly spirit she's encountered has gradually dissipated her fears and drawn out her real personality, which is actually similar to soon-ae. both of them loyal to their family, hard workers, with a love for cooking, tendency to fall in love one-sidedly and a mischievous side. being in a one-sided love/having a crush naturally would evoke fantasies, kind of to compensate for the fact that it was one-sided. so i'm okay with her suggestion about the slip and her openness.
maybe it's not fully logical, but making him "her man" would also entail a relationship and not just sex. the plan is to seduce him, and make him hers body and soul. it's a win-win situation for both bong-sun and soon-ae.

1

@ peaches

I don't think Sun Woo's interest on SH disappeared, I felt it was more like shock and then denial? Like SH said he decided to draw a boundary between them. I get the hint that he doesn't want to progress because he values their friendship more, along with the fear that they may never go back to be what they were before.

SH also seemed a bit annoying to me in the sense that it her actions looked like was testing waters. She'd say something hoping Sun-Woo would hook onto it and then act like no no don't think about it, but then come back again asking similar thing again.

ohhh that makes sense. coupled with the guilt that he feels over liking his friend's girlfriend and his growing attraction to bong-sun/soon-ae. i guess he feels compelled to keep things as they are right now.

The little girl might me a plot device, but I think she is probably a sleeper plot device to be activated later.

It seems clear folks ability to see ghosts vary.

Both the Medium and Bong-Sun can see ghosts, but it seems neither can see ghost inside the possessed--assuming Sung-Jae.

I think the young girl will be instrumental in outing Sung-Jae's possession.

Maybe, but I don't think it's particularly likely. They'll have to come up with some sort of contrived scenario of why the characters encounter the little girl again – it's not like she lives around the corner from them in Seoul so that they'll bump into each other just at random.

I find SH's behavior very believable.

She probably always liked Chef but didn't know how to express it, or maybe she thought she would have more time.

But then she started to see how he was treating BS, like during the filming and during other events.

So in a way, like how BS wanted to be possessed, SH suddenly feels this external pressure to act.

Hi Ivoire

I'm glad to see that you're now watching this show and that the relationship and kiss is giving you many things to dissect and analyse ? Are you still watching High Society? I did not see you comment in the last 2 episodes.

Yes, that kiss was everything you said and how it was executed showed so much about Chef. I like his consideration and respect for girls generally and not just SA/BS. I like how he keeps his distance responsibly as an older person, a boss and a person who has a junior to care for and not to take advantage of. I like how he's been able to exercise self-control and to care for a 'mentally sick' employee, despite all the temptations she has thrown his way.

The kiss - as you say, the pause and the way he looked at her, to make sure that she was OK with the intimacy, before he very slowly pulled her closer, spoke of this consideration and sense of respect for BS. That was one of the reasons why I was not happy previously that BS was prepared to deceive Chef by letting SA use her body to make him hers. It's wrong under any circumstances, and becomes even more wrong when a person sincerely cares for one and is considerate of one's welfare. I'm glad it's mostly resolved in this episode ? and I have to wait for more episodes to see how well this good standing for a healthy relationship continues or whether there will be other hijinks to 'trick' Chef (or others), in which case I may protest again LOL!

Random thoughts ... This show has somehow brought together a large number of people who are lonely.

-Sun Woo's mother, is disliked by other women, cannot get on with her son and is desperate for a friend.

-Sous Chef is definitely lonely, quite un-loved (but that's also his fault) and rather desperate for company, attention and praise.

-Shaman Unnie is alone except for ghosts, and is now stuck with Chef's mum.

-So Hyung has not dated for ages and is suddenly desperate for Sun Woo's attentions.

-Soon Ae's father has no one else but his lousy son and is lonely for Soon Ae, and lousy son Kyung Mo just put silly ideas into his own head and now is desperate for Bong Sun as a girlfriend!

-Bong Sun was alone most of the time and only had her grandma until Soon Ae became a friend.

In an ironic twist, it will be the ghost SA and Bong Sun, and in the beginning the ghost and Sun Woo, the ghost and her father, and the ghost and Shaman who have the more intimate relationships. A statement about the lack of intimacy among the living? Besides the growing intimacy between BS and SW, I trust that this show will enable better intimacy all round for so many lonely people.

On a different note... I was finding it funny that while Chef said that at an MT he would be the one working for the employees, he turned the tables on them by making them compete, so that they had to work to prepare dinner instead! :D And it did not occur to any of them to complain.

Haha from a leadership perspective, that makes SunWoo quite an effective leader! What he's doing is effectively creating an incentive that motivates his workers to do work without them even realising that it's work. He even makes it a point where he's the type of boss who wants to treat his workers like brothers (the subtitles I had said "I'm not an authoritarian person"). Which in leadership theory, that meant he doesn't want to be seen as an authoritarian leader (theory X) but rather a theory Y leader where employees are happy to work, are creative and enjoy taking on additional duties :D

About how sweetly Sun Woo loves... just thinking it through in writing here....

He never allowed pushy SA to have her way, protecting her from her manic self. He might have been impatient with BS but never purposely cruel. He was self-centred enough to enjoy his ego being stroked by SA, but he was nicer to her and did not take advantage of his position. He was however made more aware that she might not necessarily be always available since she was happy to call Joon her boyfriend.

He set clear boundaries between himself and So Hyung without hurting her callously outright (but of course SH was hurt anyway). When asked by So Hyung, Chef did not originally have the intention to give her a ride, and in all likelihood, he had in fact intended to bring Bong Sun back (since they lived together and he might have still been concerned about her). We see that his eyes shifted to Bong Sun, when So Hyung asked to be taken to the station.

When he gets back to the restaurant, he checks first that BS is OK before setting up another lesson (most likely an excuse to spend time with her) and he watches her fondly. When she says her arm hurts he is concerned and stops the lesson.

He cannot at first admit to Bong Sun-Soon Ae why he was so angry that she had been at risk.

It was mentioned that he might have been touched when SA tied his shoelaces for him. This time, he starts drying her off but stops when she is concerned that he is wet. Again he was touched. Together with remembering why he was angry, it's sweet that instead of denying or pretending as he had done with So Hyung, he finally admitted to himself and to her his feelings in that long look and pause before the kiss(es). In that moment he might have considered much of what is mentioned here and hesitated, but decided to not lose the timing this time and to get the girl. :)

+100. That was beautifully said and I agree with everything you wrote @GB. Unlike what happened with SH, I don't think he wants to miss his timing again with it comes to love (like he mentioned at the beginning). He knew that he's starting to have feelings for Bongsun and although he's long-time friends with SH, it never worked out for the both of them. He'd waited and loved (albeit one-side) SH but there's a risk of it not working out - since 1) there's her first love that died (so that guy will always be in heart) and 2) SH could've acted on feelings of hers earlier, but the fact is she didn't - she probably took the little things SW does for her for granted. We also know that SW still has a bit of insecurities himself (as seen by him always fishing for praises and expecting autographs) so this would also affect his view on love too. I doubt he'll feel secure if he chooses SH, since she's always the confident strong woman, while BS dissolves his insecurities by appreciating him for the little things that he does. Even to appreciating/impressed by him being himself (show-off and all). BS truly respects SW as person more than just her boss.

Like how I discussed at comment 72.1.2.1, I also think SW will end up loving SoonAe as well. Given how it was SoonAe who was there with him at his most vulnerable moments. And her caring gestures (such as tying his shoelaces, wiping the water off him) is the first time he has someone caring for him. Like others have mentioned, he's always the person giving care (his sister, BS, etc) and instead of receiving. While BS has special moments with him too in terms of appreciating him to the level that no one else does, and how they just click/'on the same wavelength' as he puts in. He's not aware of it now, since he's thinking that BS-SA are the same girl, but he's loving them both as a whole package. That skipping up the steps shadow-merging scene is there to suggest that both girls (who are polar opposites now) will merge into one. In other words, the real Bongsun beneath all the timidness is the 'middle-state' one that SW likes. She's both timid-BS and SA in one - and THATS her real personality. If we're looking at BS only, then this will be her story of growth into a better, stronger person who will enjoy the beauties of life. While if we're looking at SA, then her story will be experiencing what she missed out on life and finding out the real truth behind her death. Perhaps that truth will help her family and all those involved moved on too. SA is shown to be quite a caring person, so what probably kept her from moving on is that the people she cares for and those affected by the 'accident' are not having a hard time.

Anyway, sorry for rambling... what I wanted to say is "GO SUNWOO!!" for getting the girl. Now all you have to do is not lose her when you find the truth! lol

Also just a fun detail about what I said about SA and BS above and how SW feels secure around them...in psychology we call it a "holding environment". What Sunwoo feels and the reason why he's able to finally act on his feelings towards BS was that, in contrast to SH, BS was establish a holding environment around SW. Basically a holding environment is an environment where you feel taken care of, protected, understood, loved, and safe. So therefore a good holding environment, then, is the environment that is needed for the person to grow and develop into what he/she can become. It needs to provide a sense of safety and security, the sense that you are, and can count on, being taken care of. That's why when BS/SA starts to worry about him getting wet and wiping him off...the closeness and care made him feel safe and secure in his feelings enough to act on it. He didn't get this with SH, with SH he's always on guard on his real feelings. That's my interpretation of the scene...gotta love psychology ;)

Sorry I meant...

Thought is was adorable about how SA tied SW's shoelaces! Now they were a COUPLE!! Too cute.. I think SW will probably pick it up later...... who's who. Must be a reason why it was included in the drama.

Definitely thought So Hyung was a buzz kill especially with the phony baloney story about being in the area at the location scouting. Love both rivalry repartee between So Hyung and Bong Sun. I'm glad SA was in her body because I don't think Bong Sun would have enough guts to tell her where to go.

Totally surprised and unexpected when SA back out of BS during the kiss. OMG!Maybe she realized she knows BS loves SW on can't do the dirty deed with him... too sad...

Yayy, thanks girlfriday for this awesome recap. I have been refreshing the page for your recap since I finished watching the episode! i knew you are going to be so happy and giddy with the two girls relationship as much as I am. And that KISS, it was just too thrilling. I'm just so happy that Bong Sun got to experience that.

This drama is totally going the way I wanted it to be. The girls' friendship was what I have wanted this whole time (and obviously the romance, who can say no to that?). I'm very excited for that. I would also love to see Bong Sun's relationship with Soon-Ae's dad. Bong Sun having him as a dad would also be a great development as well.

Now is one week of waiting! Seriously, how can one week be so long? *Giddy to the max*

It would be pretty funny if genuine passion kicks Soon-Ae right out of Bong-Sun's body - like if a rush of endorphins in Bong-Sun is the ejector button.

Sad too, because that sort of means that Soon-Ae is screwed (or more accurately, not-screwed). But funny if Chef somehow figures out that the way to flip "manic Bong-Sun" into "normal Bong-Sun" is to kiss her, and starts using it as a go-to move.

But if it is Soon-Ae genuinely stepping back then I really like the idea that the two girls are friends and that Bong-Sun would likely be upset on her behalf and try and figure out a work-around.

And cop brother-in-law scares me so much I sometimes have to mute the TV.

I might've been squealing because--Chef DID NOT even try to push Bong-sun/Soon-ae when she crawled into his bed, riiiight. And those stares, and that kiss! As our resident possessed would say, "Omonini!!"

Also, Joon! Explain yourself.

Tsundere Kyung-mo and his one sided drama of Bong-sun/Soon-ae in love with him is always HILARIOUS. Also--perhaps he was hoping she'll pass by the store? All of a sudden he's wearing pants and a button up instead of shorts and a shirt. Hahaha!

Basically, I'm just happy. (And I still cannot stop squealing, I am so sorry, neighbors.)

After watching this episode, I'm really convinced that Sunwoo loves the real Bongsun (and not the possessed bongsun-soonae). I noticed he tend to flirt, show-off, and advances more when he's with the Bongsun (i.e natural-state and slightly timid) he likes. That last scene, when BS/SE worries over Sunwoo and got really shy...it reminded him of timid Bongsun. With BS/SE he always pushes her flirtations away (or more like runs away from it), and with Bongsun being too timid annoys(?) him a bit. The 'neutral' state Bongsun (while a little shy) actually looks up to him and that is what Sunwoo finds appreciates and finds attractive.

Also I bit of note, Sunwoo likes to show off/people praising him - like there are a number of times he thinks someone wants his autograph but in fact they don't. No one really pays him attention. Even SoonAe at the bike riding scene, she was dismissing him with "yeah, yeah you're all talk" when he defends himself saying that his lower body is good lol. Only Bongsun finds every little thing he does to show off cool...
Heck the girl even keeps a scrapbook idolising him. I guess when you're in a relationship, you want to look cool to the other person. So Sunwoo subconsciously feels more attracted to 'neutral'-shy Bongsun. He only advances on her when he starts to see that Bongsun that he likes.

I like that point you made! Because I had a half second of worry over who he was kissing, BS or SA but you're right, he definitely appreciates BS's shy disposition.
I suspect he's always been attracted to her but the frustration with her apologetic nature kind of made it hard to get to know her.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yep that's what I think as well...he's probably attracted to her but gets put-off every time she's apologetic. It's frustrating for him because he can totally relate to that and grew out of it. He wants BS to do the same. BS/SA on the other hand makes him uncomfortable with her full-force flirtations. She's the exact opposite to what Sunwoo thinks, and to me Sunwoo seems like the type of guy who really respects women. Even for his long-term crush and friend (PD Lee), he respected her and didn't interfere when she hooked up with his friend. So this goes the same for Bongsun, I don't think he'll want to take advantage of her when he still thinks she's sick and not herself.

Required fields are marked *

Yes! I mean he says it himself that he likes "neutral BS" best haha. But you can actually tell in episode 7 that as much as he admits that she's all smiley, HE is too. All giddy smiles over her! It's adorable. When the switch happens today, he's not pushing her away so much but he's a little frustrated with her forwardness. Mostly because it leaves him no room to take the lead. SA/BS is adorable too but her personality is so loud and abrupt that SW has more trouble handling her. You can't deny the PBY cuteness overload but how's a guy to make his move when she's skipping all the normal steps straight to jumping his bones?! lol
Yeah you could tell by his looks and demeanor he seems to have had an interest in her before but the constant apologizing made him uncomfortable. So seeing her move away from that in any shape or form was a plus even if the result was to move to the opposite end of the spectrum lol

I agree with SunWoo likes BongSun-depressed [original version].

I thought he liked her before her possession in the first couple of episodes when he was telling her she had to stand up for herself. I think he like her, but was frustrated by her and wanted her to do better for herself.

If SunWoo didn't 'like' BongSun her 'kicked-puppy' personality brought out the nurturer in him. And Sun-Woo is a big time nurturer.

I also think the reason BongSun-manic/SoonAe interests him is because the things that makes him concerned about BongSu-depressed are not an issues in BongSun-manic, so it is like he is seeing the confidence he hoped was potentially there rise to the surface.

BongSun and SunWoo matches wonderfully because, they are both naturally shy, kind people who have been stepped on because of who they are.

I think the reason why SW was frustrated with the original BS is that she reminded him of himself when he was younger... He was a pushover in high school, which kind of explains why, despite his celebrity chef status, there's still that bit of insecurity in him, as evidenced by his fishing for praise.

Yes! I think DB mentioned in the last recap that only BS would find SW riding a bike impressive. hah
But he practically preens in front of her because she genuinely finds him impressive and sincerely likes the things he likes. Likewise when BS starts to open up in front of him, SW finds himself enjoying her company and you find him looking for things to share with her so he can see her reaction or hear her praise.

Also how cute was it that "Let's go Bong! Only I can call you that."?? So adorable!

^exactly! BS establishes a good holding environment for SW to be in. It explains why he finally acts on his feelings and kisses her as I explained above (but I'll copy and paste here)...

12.2.2.1.1 OMG it's Healer ? July 26th, 2015 at 11:57 AM

They are definitely cute and adorable. Love these two ♥

"I felt like Sun-woo’s sincerity moved her, to the point that she realized that this was Bong-sun’s moment"...ME TOO! It's been a long while since I've found a kiss scene heartwarming. I was already on board with such great kiss scene set up but when Soon Ae left Bong Sun, in my opinion as well, to let Bong Sun experience it - I just well up with how toughing it was.

Thanks for the recap! It's really amazing that the girls are friends now but at the end of the episode, people are saying 'bong sun kicked her out' or 'their love kicked her out' but when i watched it, she left the body looking at both bong sun and sun woo and mostly sun woo where she felt something? Maybe she fell for him? It would be amazing if that happens. Every story wants 'body' to be the one who's going to end up with the main guy but right now, i want the ghost to end up with the main guy. Sorry not sorry. There's so much chemistry between PBY and JJS but i found chemistry is when PBY acts as soon-ae and not as bong sun so yeah.

Creepy cop is still creepy. The car scratch and the stronger ki he has. Tsk tsk. I hope we find out if he's really possessed or not cause i'm dying to know!

About PD Lee. Nope. I know you just want to talk abput the kiss but stop. Annoying imo haha. Let's just hope he dates her then it's over PLEASE haha. Anyways, for Cordon, huhuhu i just wish he's end up with bong sun and chef with soon-ae (if she's on a comma) or if she's not.... then at least make him fall for soon-ae.

I'm sorry but i still think bong sun still needs soon-ae's help for chef to fall for her. I love how Kyung mo is so jealous when she announces she's going to a trip with the other chefs hahaha. Love that.

Agreee with this so much

Bong Sun and Chef are cute and compatible but with Chef and Soon Ae there is so much more there- humor, sincerity, connection and tension. I feel like they are two strange pieces of a puzzle that fit so well together :(

and to me Soon Ae's face was one of shock/surprise to her feelings, followed by sadness because of the implications of such a realization

Woohoo! Thanks for the recap, Girlfriday! I just finished this episode at Dramafire (thanks Dramafire for the quick translations) and boy, am I ecstatic! Yes, as you said, "Holy swoon, Batman"! Perfect words (while I replayed that scene over and over and over...)! Can't get enough of it! I'm swooning like mad!

I had the most laughs in this episode and most touched really. I love the scene where Soon Ae and Bong Sun are galloping on that bridge and when Bong Sun comes back alone galloping as Soon Ae. I'm glad they are on the same page now, and best of friends at that! Loooove it!

You could see how Sun Woo is slowly breaking his resolve in keeping Bong Sun at arm's length. The night when Bong Sun/ Soon Ae hopped in bed with him well yes, he didn't jump off the bed right away as before, ha ha ha! I love when characters go on a trip, a retreat or an MT, whatever it's called, an overused thing in dramas but if the main characters end up in bed like that, well, who's complaining, right? I also love jealous and petty Sun Woo!

I really thought that Soon Ae was actually ejected, during the kiss, and was shocked by it. But I like your musings about that, that she willingly ejected herself for Bong Sun to enjoy the moment and was actually touched by Sun Woo's sincerity. Gosh, can't wait to see what happens next! These actors are just superb. I am buying this wholesale! Really into this: hook, line and sinker!

I think this is the only Towel Kiss I saw ever! The awkward feels, Bong Sun/ Soon Ae's shy eyes and Sun Woo's longing ones, then, finally, the Kiss!!! I'm dying here...of swooooons!

..The second leads in this drama sure do take their sweet time figuring out their feelings..

Well, compare to the main lead in other drama who do take his time (17+ years! *gasps*), Joon is not wasting too much time I guess..

BS/SA brazenness and sassiness never fails to entertain me. Chef uncomfortableness when BS/SA crawls or attacks him is my pure pleasure. She's hilarious! She's a riot who make Chef more concern and attentive. She's no longer a meek-shadow he can ignore nor escape.. Haha. Love, love, love their love story.

It struck me as strange at the time and I wondered if something had happened between them that of course Soon-ae wouldn't know about and would also kinda explain his behavior.

I don't know what got into me, but that last scene made me teary. Maybe because I was just so attached to Soon Ae by now. My heart swell watching her, her fate and her growth. I could relate to her, I could sympathize her, her desperation seems real, her disappointments seem valid. That last moment, I hope it was voluntary ejection. Because Soon Ae that I became to know this past eight episodes was, a ghost who cared so much about people around her. As much as she wants her grudge to be relieved, I think she now thinks a lot more about Bong Soon's wellbeing as well, like there are moments she needs Bong Soon to experience herself.

The last ending was great and to have Soon-ae ejected from her body I feel like it's hinting that her belief she's still there is to loss her virginity. I am hoping that with her being ejected from her host at the crucial moment, it will makes her question her reason for staying vs. going to the afterlife and have the Unni help her solve it along with Bong-sun. I hope the question starts next week cause we can see how affected she was when the water hose dose her since she died in the water.

With Unni finally meeting Sung-jae, I can't wait to see her be a helping force to help Soon-ae.

Just how did Soon Ae figure out how to eject herself? I was so confused when she got out the first time that I couldn't even focus on their conversation. Then when I replayed it, my, has Bong Sun done a 180. During their kiss, I wonder if Soon Ae voluntarily stepped out or was she forcefully ejected.

I am not doubting that Sun Woo likes Bong Sun, but he clearly likes Soon Ae as well. He is unconsciously all smiles around her -- the bike ride, the firecrackers, the countryside restaurant. He is drawn to Soon Ae's carefree, no-filter personality.

There are so many things that can rat them out. I thought for sure Sun Woo would question why Bong Sun could ride a bike when he literally just taught her a week ago, but nope, he didn't suspect a thing. And now Soon Ae's unpatented shoelaces tying formula. When Bong Sun comes back, Sun Woo is going to notice why she ties her shoelaces different.

If Bong Sun doesn't want Joon, can I have him? He totally has a crush on her. I can't stand to see his heart broken. I love how Soon Ae instantly forgot about Operation Seduce Chef and latched onto her self-declared boyfriend instead. Which swoon. Sun Woo is so petty. Joon was robbed. No wonder he drowned his sorrows in alcohol.

Evil spirit, begone! Sung Jae destroyed one CCTV, but what about the garage CCTV where the cop's car is parked? I was bothered Little Haley Joel Osment wasn't even slightly remorseful she locked a real person in a refrigerated warehouse.

This was definitely the best episode yet, and I'm so excited for what's to come. A big thanks for the recap, girlfriday!

I feel like Sun-woo has developed this thing where if Bong-Sun is having a "maniac" episode, he'll just go with the flow and assume she's just being weird if she does anything abnormal. So maybe that's why he didn't think too much of the bike ride.

Yes at the security camera! I was thinking it might be used later as evidence. Besides just because the harddrive with the files was destroyed I'm sure there's gotta be a backup somewhere. Don't go pulling a mask on me and with all the files being lost so easily!

i think soon ae didn't step back intentionally. i think both of them have no idea why soon ae suddenly got ejected. that's why soon ae looks in daze realizing she's no longer in bong sun body.

that would create a big dent in their scheme. if soon ae get ejected while being "close" to suun wo. soon ae wont be able to loose her virgin grudge.

on a separate note. i truly believe soon ae grudge for being a ghost is not the fact she died a virgin, but because she died an un-natural death, she just cant remember it because of her lost memory.

i love soon ae share her confidence with bong sun. i love their relationship. almost as fun as watching the romance... almost :p

PBY's performance from the earlier episodes really moved me. I began watching most of her latest works. She was just so adorable. I found myself surprised when watching this episode and was moved by KSG's performance as well. I just keep finding more good things about this show. I hope this continues.

Why did the girl lock bongsun in the freezer?

Maybe the ghost-seeing little girl wanted to help. She knew Soon Ae the Virgin Ghost's need to be relieved of her grudge, and that that putting her in danger would catalyze the Chef's realization and expression of his true feelings for Bong Sun/Soon Ae. She was actually playing cupid in a cute but scary way.

<and that that putting her in danger would catalyze the Chef’s realization and expression of his true feelings for Bong Sun/Soon Ae.

There's no way the little girl can know that. (That was the drama writers' motivation but certainly not the little girl's.)

Essentially, she was just a completely underdeveloped character used as a plot device to somehow get the leads closer. From the little the drama revealed about the girl, is that she's just a bit mental, sees ghosts and then does random things regardless of whether they might endanger her or other people. Zero conscience or sense. Which, if this is really truly her normal way of behaving, it's rather strange how her parents treat her. You'd think they'd supervise her much more closely.

It's interesting how different people can watch the same scene and arrive at completely different conclusions. For me, I felt that Soon Ae never really thought of Sun Woo as anything other than a means to an end. I think that's why she was able to flirt and jump on him so boldly - her emotions weren't really involved. But, I think starting from when he found her in the refrigerated room and piggybacked her, something changed for Soon Ae. So when he kissed her like that, her emotions became so intense for her that she had to leave. I don't think she ejected herself because she was being considerate of Bong-sun. And you know what? I'm not mad at her for not thinking of Bong-sun at a moment like that. I think it's because for me, since the first moment of possession, Soon Ae has been the lead rather than Bong Sun. And, *whispers* I think Sun Woo is in love with Soon Ae. She breaks down his barriers with her forthrightness. Her advances feed his ego and overcomes his insecurity with girls - look at how many years he admired So Hyung from afar. And despite her assertiveness, she can be gentle and comforting - like when he was working through his issues with his school bullies and when she tied his shoelace. Her cooking skills and creativity impress Sun Woo. When Soon Ae and Sun Woo are together, it's like it's just them - no Bong Sun, no Joon, nobody else. There's no question that Sun Woo likes and is comfortable with Bung Sun as is evident from that day where he taught her to ride a bike - but it's not like what he feels for Soon Ae. So rather than feeling encouraged by the end of this episode, I felt my heart breaking for Soon Ae.

Yes, spot on!

Although Park Bo Young is the lead actress, it is not Bong Sun but Soon Ae who's the lead character. The whole drama revolves around her. Her grudge, her family, her death, now her friendship with Bong Sun and relationship with Sun Woo. That last scene when she was behind them, she looked hurt.

Well said to all three of you! I've been reading this thread hoping someone would say what the three of you did.

It's quite clear Soon Ae (no matter which body she's in) is our leading lady. In that last beautifully written scene, Chef kisses Soon Ae and she is overwhelmed by a sudden influx of real emotion. Soon Ae literally takes a step back so she can truly see the situation and in that moment she's sad because she finally realizes she has feelings for Chef. It's no longer about him being a "man of vitality" it's about him being her man.

+400 to all of you. I felt the same sadness as I watched the ending scene. How can people keep on saying he loves the real BS when it was after SA took charge, that he started showing interest in BS? He thinks they are one and the same person, but the person he has connected with, the person who has seen him in his not-so-cool moments is Soon Ae. BS idolized him from the beginning. But his and Soon Ae's relationship is not of idolization, but of being free with each other. She can say literally anything to him and he can do the same with her. He does not have to try to act cool in front of her since she has seen him in his vulnerable moments. Don't you think the Chef falling for BS is an accumulation of these little moments? She is the one who has made all the efforts to have the Chef fall for BS. BS had the chef thrown into her lap without having to make any effort on her part. When placed in a tough situation seeing the chef with another woman, she went to SA for help instead of trying to make the moves on her own. That shows she knows it is the SA aspect of her personality that works magic on SW. Is it not selfish and childish of her? She does not want to be coached by the ghost on how to get the guy, just wants the ghost to possess her so that the chef will be hers. If she is the main lady, she is such a passive character.

Soon Ae seems more mature and worldly-wise and she adds something to Sun Woo's life, something he has not known before. If she were not a ghost, they would have made a great couple since she is thoughtful, but also carefree and courageous. She knows how to get out of a tricky situation, like she has shown repeatedly. Even when BS was in the cold storage warehouse, SA with her limited abilities as a ghost, thought of a way to escape. How can you not love a character who is so capable and interesting, who even as a ghost, spreads her influence far and wide?

I did not think this drama would go the natural, but complicated route of the ghost falling for the chef. I am still not sure they would go that way. Even if it is a sad ending for SA in her love story, I would still love to see her having feelings for the chef. It makes the drama more poignant to see Soon Ae realize her possibly impossible feelings for the chef than show her have no interest in the chef other than her virginity grudge? The writer might go the latter way and stick to the convenient cliched route. But how can we roll with it when whatever we have seen make us feel otherwise? It is sad if the chef doesn't even realize the person he fell for initially, the person who knows some of his secrets, is not the real Bong Sun, but Soon Ae.

+10000 to everything you said here. Although I'm a Bongsun-shipper, I too want SoonAe to fall in love with Sunwoo and vice-versa. As explained in detail at comment 72.1.2.1, I feel like Sunwoo will end up loving both girls as a whole. SoonAe will also have that special place in his heart after he learns the truth. This drama is definitely about SoonAe's story and Bongsun's growth as a person. The central story will revolve around SoonAe more on how she'll come to experience things in life that she never got the chance to. I'm getting my tissues ready for when the time comes, but I feel this will be one heart-warming, bitter-sweet, happy ending for SoonAe. So I doubt this show will have shipping wars like School 2015 did since this drama is about two girls - one getting to experience what she missed in life, while the other will grow into a better/stronger person in order to not miss out on the beautiful things in life. It's a story about two girls in fact :)

<She can say literally anything to him

Um, that's what she does with everyone that she interacts with (both before she became a ghost and after).

You are calling Bong-su selfish and Soon-ae thoughtful? Seriously? Well, you could argue that Bong-su is selfish with her request indeed, but Soon-ae is the definition of selfishness. She does things for her family, but other than that she has spent nearly all episodes thinking ONLY of herself and doing things without considering for a second what kind of effect they might have on others. Most of all her plan to have sex with Sun-woo so that she can resolve her grudge. She did not spare a thought for Sun-woo when she hatched that plan and proposing it to Bong-su wasn't out of kindness of heart either.

Seriously, Soon-ae is a lot of good things but "thoughtful" (or mature) really isn't the word.

'How can people keep on saying he loves the real BS when it was after SA took charge, that he started showing interest in BS?'
Actually he started showing interest in BS after the doctor diagnosed BS with the 'bipolar disorder and depression'. He thought back to the way he treated her before and somehow felt guilty for making her depressed. So I think he started to care for her out of guilt and a sense of responsibility as her employer. Since he learned about her 'bipolar disorder', he seemed to tolerate all her different sides and antics; whether sassy and wild, timid or neutral. He liked all three different sides of her, but he admitted that it's the neutral state of her that he liked the most, and that neutral state is the real BS. For him, he liked her as one girl, or so he thought. Anyway I love seeing his interaction with SA because their interaction are mostly hilarious

Love your words! I too feel that the girl/personality Sun Woo actually likes Soon Ae. While Soon Ae spends most of her time jumping on Sun Woo, in the times where she's not jumping on him, she's cheerful, yet skilled (cooking), and she's thoughtful. The things Soon Ae does for him (while not trying to jump at him like crazy) touches him and makes him pause and care for her. I do see his irritation with Bong Sun, starting not only from the first episode but during the bike scene. The "calm" Bong Sun that he said he likes seems similar to the "calm" Soon Ae to me, albeit more cheerful.

However, I do also think that if given enough time, he would probably fall for Bong Sun if she is more cheerful and not saying sorry all the time etc.

see comment 72.1.2.1 - I think the show is trying to suggest that the two girls will merge. In fact, seeing how the writer is balancing out crucial moments equally between SoonAe and Bongsun with the Sunwoo, it's heading towards Sunwoo loving both girls as a whole, even if he'll find out the truth later on.

I don't know why...but I actually found myself replaying the ejection part of the kiss more than the kiss itself?

Although it's all speculation at this point, I think Soon-ae left Bong Sun's body because she wanted Bong Sun herself to feel Sun Woo's love for her. And while sad, it's probably her way of saying "let her have him...". It's especially heart wrenching also because Soon-ae never got her chance to love and be loved. Her sad eyes totally wrecked me :'( My only hope is that she will find her peace and move on soon.

Is it weird that I still feel the pain hours after I watched that scene? Maybe it's the accompanying OST too.
