Happy OT and Happy Eid Mubarak or Aidil Fitri to all who celebrate!

It's been a great week for dramas with so much to think about and enjoy!
Mask - This is a 20 episode show that seems at first to have stopped suddenly at ep 16... or probably to have been planned to stop at 16, but yay... it is not ended yet and there's so much good stuff in store! (Plus more plot holes and ineffectual evil too I guess LOL)! I know we have fears that if a show that should have ended at 12-16 episodes is going for more is just stretching it too thin, however there's so much to resolve in this story that I suppose 4 more episodes with lots more skinship and sweet kisses (to make up for it's earlier dearth of the same) are quite in order. :D

I Remember You/Hello Monster - Soooo gooood!!! If I not for Mask which is compelling fun, this show would have been the number 1 for me in terms of good writing and execution. Everything still coming together and slowly making sense and we viewers are allowed to see and understand and figure things out along with our protagonists. That's the way a crime/thriller/mystery should be written. Enough reveal and enough kept hidden to tantalize us and keep us coming back. The development of the characters is also great. So many interesting actors (who look good too) to rivet us by good acting and well timed humour. A tight plot with no fillers. An uncontrived, unfolding of a romance, at first reluctantly between people who could be soulmates, very sweetly and naturally done - and they did not even have to begin as childhood first loves! What a relief!!! What a joy of a show!

Oh My Ghost(ess) - Fun and pathos!!! We are so thrilled to have our 2 girls separated from each other now so that we can see the development of both, separately and together. These 2 girls are a different kind of and in the literal sense soulmates too (like our couple in Hello Monster) who are meant to be together, in order to change for the better, to make discoveries together and to resolve the big questions including how one person died and why she's still around. And we look forward to another sweet, reluctant romance which is in the works amidst the confusion over personality shifts, which is going to be a hoot!

The Time I Loved You/The Time We Were Not In Love - Although well acted and character driven, it drags because characters have not given us enough to chew on to get us increasingly invested. I feel I do not know not much more about our characters, although we are already 6 episodes in. Unfortunately although I began with liking Won unconditionally, I now have some conditions before I'm totally on board about how he 'loves' Ha Na. It has a feel of being not quite stifling but not quite healthy and even has something obsessive about it. Ha Na cannot 'grow' much or make considered decisions with so much protecting give her and with crucial information kept from her. I feel a good long...

My Love Eun Dong - Hmmm, I expected more protest and fight from the unlawfully 'lawful' husband. I suppose the next few episodes will be ones where Eun Dong is wracked with guilt over his pain and over her son's attachment to him. So now we need a slow resolution to how the Hyun Soo-Eun Dong family is going to be able to be united... and have yet to see the fallout ... don't we have a recalcitrant father or a slighted female 2nd lead out to get revenge still?

High Society - I'm watching this in bits... meaning I watch some parts but not all or all episodes... just enough to know what's going on and to keep up with the recaps. What came to mind after the last episode is that in the chess game of life, with the 'rules' of society in play, it could be better for people (Joon Ki? Yoon Ha?) to return to their 'places' and start again, but not necessarily from the bottom (as we see in Ep 12). It does not mean they cannot get out of their squares, but there are some rules that guide the game. If there is to be a checkmate between king and queen, it is the one of the opposing color that will deal the death blow. But because we are dealing with people and not just chess pieces, how each piece re-interprets the rules to make a winning move (as evidenced by how Ji Yi practically won Chang Soo's mother over) but not at the expense of the others, will be the game of ultimate triumph. I'm hoping that our 4 leads will get there.

My Beautiful Bride - So powerful, so good and so full of feels... the suspenseful, sad kind. This is another show that I'll take in small bits, cos I'm a coward when it comes to watching people suffering pain (physical, emotional, spiritual). Fantastic nuanced characters who make me feel along with them and not just 1 but 2 or even 3 strong females who are not mere window dressing. I like that it's another story show-casing corruption in the ranks of law and order, with no apologies and instead of an angry mom, we have a kickass main protagonist who is indefatiguable in his efforts to get back his girl and bring down the 'shadows'.

Happy Watching!

Sorry.... this was truncated... :D

The Time I Loved You/The Time We Were Not In Love - Although well acted and character driven, it drags because characters have not given us enough to chew on to get us increasingly invested. It has a feel of being not quite stifling but not quite healthy and even has something obsessive about it. Ha Na cannot 'grow' much or make considered decisions with so much protecting give her and with crucial information kept from her. I feel a good long separation between those two main characters will do them a world of good. It will let Ha Na really find her own feet and be even more confident (than she is now which is not bad, considering). Where's the 2-year hiatus from a relationship when we need it? :D

Oh My Ghostess I had just about forgotten the original girl, and now she is back. Emotionally, I am nervous.

I have discounted the ghost's one-sided love for the policeman. Rule number one in having a one-sided crush ... know if the person is available. Married is off limits in my book.

I rather like the ghost and the restaurant owner pairing. It will be difficult after the snap crackle chemistry of a kiss and the cutesy of her pursuing him to go back to the too-shy girl.

I have enough faith in the show that it will drag me back there so that I can accept the pairing. But ... I would be ok if the show somehow let ghost get a real body permanently and paired with restaurant owner.

The whole murder mystery and wheels/policeman marriage bore me. I just want cute, funny, cute and Ghostess has delivered.

Hello! I am at work, so no long speech, we are having Tallinn Maritime Days till Sunday. I would like to remind everyone, that today is also a memorial day for those (dutch, malaysian, british, australian, etc.) who were killed a year ago in MH17. You can fold paper Airplanes with their names and take them to your local Russian Embassy. Search #paperboeing for more information.

As for dramas, I am yearning for some black comedy, but that genre seems to be out of focus in Korea. Some juicy, tickling black comedy. What would be a good plot for it & who could star there? And what juicy title could it have?

Meantime, Scholar & Gwi are kickin`. More Gwi + Sung Yeol scenes would be good.Their chemistry is better than they have with any of the girls. Lee Soo Hyuk was born to play Gwi. He is so deliciously theatric, yet smooth as black silk. I want a spin-off of just Gwi´s Century of Royal Boredom or something.

Hello beanies, hope everyone had a great week, mine was so so and emotionally draining dramawise
MASK, still very much in love with this drama,I was anxious waiting to see Le shit hitting the fan and it was bad in a good way,I felt horrible for min woo but I'm glad took a turn and the angst didn't last long, how sweet was the counseling session ?. As for the devil's hoobae suk hoon, death is too good for you.I hope minwoo, Ji sook and MY's wife team up and bring this nutjob down.I'm sure everyone is squealing over this weeks ending because it was goooooood?
THOUSAND DAY PROMISE , I only started this because Su Ae was on the cover,I realised halfway that the male lead was kim rae won, he looked better in Punch,I guess it's true what they say men age like fine wine. This drama drained me, I don't remember the last time I cried so much.it was so sad,I stayed in a funk for a while.
Ex GIRLFRIEND CLUB Fun and cute.
LAST SCANDAL Overall good drama, would have been in my top five if I hadn't read the recaps beforehand, that killed the thrill of not knowing but I still enjoyed it.but I made a mistake of trying to find out more about the leads,ah hours on Google and 4 suicides later,I'm still in shock and horrified. I really hope netizens can chill out on celebrities and supposed rumors and scandals. I feel sad for the children left behind.
Look what just happened this week with Kim Hyoon jung pregnancy scandal, after ruining his career it turns out it was all lies.sigh.I lack the words.
Have a great weekend beanies

Painkillers finally kicked in, so I can add what I wanted to say.First of all I hate pain, today's was so bad I kept throwing up, yet I haven't eaten since Thursday, ah but it's over thank God.Speaking of pain, I'm still trying to wrap my head around Choi Jin Shil suicide, and the 3 that followed after. At first I thought someone was killing them off,YOU WHO CAME FROM ANOTHER STAR style but that was before reading more about the situation .I can't help but feel horrible for her kids and her mother left behind ,I sorta understand what drove her to that point because I've been there as a child suffering from depression and constantly sick.I've grabbed a knife and tried to end it all but the thought of the pain my mum would be in after losing her first child in a fire always stopped me.Anyway,it's all horrible, I hope the families healed and are living well,as for the person who started the rumor ,I wonder how she dealt with the aftermath, the guilt she must feel should be overwhelming, if I were her I'd have left Korea and start afresh in another country praying everyday for forgiveness.
On too happier thoughts ,My sister came to visit today it being Eid ,I guess requested by my Dad,I haven't seen her in two years ,it was a short visit ,since I was in so much pain we couldn't properly catch up.Our family is weird ,generations of Muslims but the 4 of us are Christians, my Dad still doesn't know, Wish he would find out already ,so I don't have to pretend but I'll wait for him to find out on his own after I've moved countries Lol.
Back to dramas ,I'm looking forward to YONG PAL, how beautiful is the teaser, some people are too beautiful, stop it.Squeeing over OH MY GOD, So Ji sub and Shin min ah, life is good,we have been blessed beanies, dramaland is gifting us,please be good but even if you aren't I'll watch you anyway.
Oh my Ghostess, started watching this and I'm liking it.
Looking forward to continuing MY LOVE EUN DONG and starting I REMEMBER YOU. This seems like a fantastic drama year, hope it goes on till the end.
I'm now Rewatching IT'S OKAY THAT'S LOVE just because I miss them and downloading FASHION KING the movie,I've heard great things, hope it meets my expectations.
Any movie recommendations, comedy please, after A THOUSAND DAY PROMISE I'm all cried out, can't stand anymore sadness this week.

Oh and how Hot is Gwi in SCHOLAR THAT WALKS THE NIGHT, I never saw the actors appeal before but now I get it.It's tempting me to watch the drama, but I'm vampired out, my mind refuses to watch anything else with vampires probably because I over did it with Edward Cullen obsession, twilight, vampire dairies and that other one from HBO. I can't even remember it's name considering how much I loved and Obsessed I was ,It's like I'm not even the same person .
Point is Gwi very Hot with his mane of glory.

yeah, I was the same after watching Last Scandal. I almost refused to believe it

I have suffered from rumors too, but it just made me angry. someone spread a story of me beating up my professor, which was a blatant lie. When I told the professor herself after a year had passed she cried and asked why I didn´t tell her earlier. she was like: who is sick enough to think of a lie like that? but it blew out...later I found out it was my aunt who I had been living with when I did my masters´. crazy, eh?

But when I have a problem I complain loud and wide, drive all friends nuts being a public drama queen, and then I get over it the next day. the only times when I felt depressed was being kicked out of home unemployed for 4 years with nothing to eat and only rubber boots to wear. that kind of sucked. but I found a job and it is ok now.

TGIF another hot day here in deep south! I can't grow anything, but my back yard is covered with sesame seed leaves now. That thing just grow by itself (I am not complaining). I am eating leaves wrap instead of lettuce wrap with my meat.

I think I am blessed as a drama fan so far this year - Dramas I enjoy have been keep coming (currently enjoying I remember you, Mask, My beautiful bride, My love Eundong, Oh My Ghostess the most), and many actor/actresses you usually don't get to see were/are/will be in small screen - Yeah So JiSup!

On dramas:
Good news on HwaJung: Gwanghae (Cha Seong-won) was planned to make his exit in ep 28, but now they say that it has not been decided when he will leave (because they are still writing/live-shoot, and rating is good partially due to Gwanhae character) but he will stay until ep 30 at least. Yay, I think best character in HJ is Gwanghae (I always had soft spot on this poor guy. My fav GwangHae character in dramas? That crazy adorable old man GwangHae in Tamra the island).

Orange Marmalade: I love the message this show is giving. They are telling the story of vampire, but it can be anything with social discrimination issue.

I remember you: 'There is a monster in all of us. It’s just a matter of feeding that monster.' (from last ep recap). I just love these dramas which has messages for the viewers, not just s-o-s-o plot.

Acting-wise, I am impressed with Park BoYoung from Oh my ghostess. I read she is the highest paid actress in TVN's history, but we know she deserves it.

For actor, I love Kim MuYeol/KDY from My beautiful bride. I feel his desperation and my heart ache. I need him to be happy- fast. The character that I feel sorry for next is Shi-hoo from Orange Marmalade. I am impressed with his acting, and He even looks so fitting for a vampire role (Then again, nobody can beat Lee SooHyuk).

As for my favorite character, Yi Jiyi from High society takes the cake. She is so different from a typical female character in K-dramaland. She can make anyone shut up- amazing. Next fav? MinWoo in Mask. No need to say further there.

How about you- do you have a favorite character in currently airing dramas?
Anyway happy Friday again!

Yes, dramaland looks kinda better place this year than last year.. I remember I keep praying if/when actors/actresses I like doing drama.. Then BAM! So many A-listers/hallyu stars and the ones who only doing movies also doing dramas this year..

For the actresses alone, this year we have Ha Ji Won, Jang Na Ra, Soo Ae, Gong Hyo Jin, Song Hye Kyo, Shin Min Ah and even Lee Young Ae will do a drama.
We have young up and coming talents too like Park Bo Young and Jung So Min headlining dramas, not too mention Kim Yoo Jung and Kim So Hyun both in high school dramas.

For the actors, there are Cha Tae Hyun, Ji Sung, Joo Ji Hoon, Hyun Bin, So Ji Sub, Kim Rae Won, Jo Jae Hyun, Lee Jun Ki, Kim Soo Hyun, and Jung Jae Young who only worked exclusively in movies before.

My favourite female character in a currently airing drama is Ji-yi too, while male is Lee Soo-hyuk's Gwi. Ji-yi is a pretty awesome character and she has backbone for days, I love how she never backs down in front of Chang-soo's mother. I like Yoon-ha a lot as a character too, I think this is an unpopular opinion, I feel the urge to protect her. Her not-a-revenge against Joon-gi for breaking her heart just makes me want to wrap her in bubble wrap and keep her safe. She looks like she's going to give in to him at any moment even though her pride is hurt, so she pulls herself up by her bootstraps and acts like she doesn't care. I also adore the relationship between the girls, Yoon-ha kept apologizing to Ji-yi for hanging out with Chang-soo and she can't get why Ji-yi won't do the same for her. I really want them to work things out between them but I don't worry because if there's anything the girls excel at, it's communication.

Best thing is that there seems to be a lot fewer idol leads that can barely act (with an exception or two, like High Society). Have also seen a couple of "new" actors (new to dramas, or rare appearances) instead of seeing the same old 15-20 faces in almost every drama.

I was really on the Hwajung bandwagon, but lately I can't finish episodes. Mostly because of the princess and her 2 expressions: Mildly annoyed and not as mildly annoyed. Her bracelet breaks and she spills beads on the ground and she is--mildly annoyed. Her lover has been declared missing and possibly dead and she looks--mildly annoyed. Come on, actress, emote a little. I know you're royalty so you're supposed to be above it all, but geesh. (And I love all the male leads to pieces.)

+10 for Ji An.... Love this role for Jang Na Ra. Love her character, that spunk, that no-nonsense kickass, "I can take care of myself, thank you" attitude and without boasting or snide remarks. Super cool. :D

My 2nd favorite lady cop is Lee Shi Young as Cha Yoon Mi in My Beautiful Bride... also out there doing the dirty work and the Team Leader of a bunch of guys.

As for actors... right now for the wonderful emotion and how he makes me emotional with him is Kim Moo Yul as Kim Do Hyung also in My Beautiful Bride. I don't like the darkness and grim theme but was pulled in by him and the actresses compelling performances.

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all doing well today. ..... Expecting hot and humid weather this weekend. Absolutely not looking forward to it.

Watched this week:

Mask - Ok, so I can't stop laughing every time Mi-yeon appears in a scene with her wineglass and she's sipping her wine through A STRAW! ...... Certain details in this drama are just too funny.

I Remember You - I figured it would be kind of entertaining ...... but I didn't expect this drama to be this interesting! It's quite good with enough to keep us guessing ---- or not.

Divorce Lawyer In Love - Finally finished this. ....... I may be in the minority, but I really liked the way things ended for the main couple. It was no frills, understated, asking the right questions, and it worked.

That's it for now. ....... Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

The Genius - A moment of silence for the fallen king. T.T. I have a love-hate relationship with spoilers. But TG is special since I die a little inside after every DM. And so my jaw dropped when I checked the wiki page for Ep 3 results. T.T. I was so confused. I was like "What's this guy doin' on the other end of the spectrum". I'm still in denial. I've got faith but I'd rather go with To see is to believe rn. Lol. I still can't watch ep 3. And so. YooHyun/YeonSeung/Hyunmin/Kyungran all the way. I adore Kong and Dongmin(the CS fan in me is rooting for 'em) but they've already won and all. I know. I know. Kyungran is pretty much above average in everything but not esp good at something. A jack of all trades and a master of none, I guess? I can't see her winning. Far, maybe? But winning the crown? Err, no. But that makes me root for her more. :) I also have love-hate relationship with Kyunghoon. I think my jaw will drop if he becomes a King slayer. Hah.

Reply 1994 - I loved 1997 but I had a glimpse of the shipping war and I sure wasn't ready for that(Song Jongho was perfect and stuff but I never thought that it'd be anyone but SIG). Here's to hoping that I'd root for trash oppa. My heart can't handle another Taekwang(and another unwatched last episode. Lol)

Healer - Haha. It's never too late, right? Well, I didn't love the first 4 eps which I watched about 3 months ago. But I liked them. And it was exam week at that time. So after some time, I forgot about it. But I'm giving it another try! ;)

Halt: Masked Prosecutor, High Society, The Lover, My Love Eundong

I want to try TTILY because I like the leads and hyung. But it reminds me too much of INR 2012 without Mr. Perfect 2nd lead. So I'm sticking to recaps.

And I can finally say HAPPY WEEKEND!

Aiyeee I'm a huge Reply 1994 fangirl! I love both ships but ultimately was satisfied with the final pairing. I just love the whole cast from that show and the soundtrack so I love that show in general.

I've been finding it hard to make progress on Healer. Something in my body is rejecting anything K-drama and all its cliches (I know, the horror!). But I have a whole long list of Korean dramas to plough through and every vein in my body tells me I'm going to get through this list. Have only made it to episode 4 of Healer so far in 3 weeks, which is unusually slow for me.

*KINDA SPOILERS AHEAD*

Ahhh The Genius killed me (emotionally) as well...I did the same thing and checked the wiki page but I was actually super eager to watch the ep and see how this could possibly happen - granted the eliminated person wasn't my fav but he always made the games interesting. The DM was actually very very well-played by the winner (especially the part at the end omg..), which makes me think that he's good individually but lacks common sense/social skills which is why the MM are always crazy because of him. Watch the episode soon!!! It's worth it.

Side note: super happy that there is someone to talk to the genius about, the soompi thread is pretty much dead and I had to go to reddit for other viewers' thoughts haha. :)

Watching:
Oh My Ghostess - cute
EXO Next Door - not enough of a fan girl to go swishy over this
My Beautiful Bride - if you don't want to be found, I'm just done with you.

Looking for a light-hearted romance that finished this year. Suggestions? I need a romance marathon.

Hanja this week: 勺 spoon. Spoon and chopsticks is called 수저 sujeo.

Went to a 2 day retreat at the Cambridge Zen Center. Yong Maeng Jong Jin means "to leap like a tiger while sitting," a Korean term traditionally used to describe intensive Zen meditation. Got to do 108 bows, chanting, sitting meditation, walking meditation, ritual eating together, dharma talk, and koan interviews. Very cool! Learned a chopgi is a wooden clapper. (spelling?) Actually liked being hit with a big stick to relieve the muscles from long sitting.

I learned how to tie the Korean breast bow on my monk robe.

Still in my "roadtrip mode". Sketched at a lake. Bought lunch from a farmstand. Tried a new backroad and found a river view park. Practiced my hanguel and hanja handwriting. Wrote thank you notes by hand. Took photos of morning dew at sunrise. Reading "Breakfast with Buddha". Working on my Korean traditional tile roof house model.

One man at the retreat told me I am on a spiritual journey. He suggested I should see Blue Cliff Monestary, Chuang Yen monestary, and Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in New York.

My very christian aunt and uncle are worried I am becoming a Moonie. I laughed when they said that. Nope.

I really only like the bowing and chanting, and sort of hate the sitting meditation. Still, it did fulfill my yearning for a temple stay in Korea, at least for now. :)

Meanwhile, I am forgetting all the Korean I learned. I really do need to return to a regular practice of study. I hate that I studied Korean for a year but can't speak at all. Words get stuck in my throat. I go blank. In the real world, I can't understand native Korean speakers.

I know "Mindfulness in Plain English" is lauded and well-known, but it really deserves it's place as one of the best books on the subject. It's such an eye-opener and makes sitting meditation sound actually accessible! It inspires me to sit, so I have to recommend it, too. : )

Happy Friday, everyone! This week was busy for me, so I'm hoping to finally kick back and chill.

Since it's been raining a lot here, I've had time to progress with Pasta (ep 8 currently). Last week I said I've enjoyed the first two episodes and fear that I might've been unclear about some things. While I like the Head Chef and the way his moods sway, how he's so short-tempered and easily annoyed (I have a thing for choleric people on-screen), the motivation behind him rubs me the wrong way. Really, no women in your kitchen? And everyone just goes along with it? No sueing, no taking the matter to higher authorities? Come on, it's the 21st century! That aside, the chemistry between the two leads is great, couldn't ask for more. Oh, and I do enjoy the little side romance, mainly because No Min-woo is on the receiving end. He's very charming. Stiff as a board, bless him, but very very handsome.

And then there's Oh My Ghostess. Great show, I'm glad I gave it a try. Cho Jung-seok is just aaaahhh so good (scratch that, everyone's good there!), the way he delivers lines is... like... magic.
Some have been raising issues re consent/forcing yourself on someone. I'm not that quick to judge Soon-Ae (she's just misguided) and hope that she (along with the viewers) will learn from it and have a chance to redeem herself. Plus, she didn't ask for that kiss (that kiss, man, that kiss!). Can't wait for new episodes now that Bong-sun is back.

That's it. I haven't watched Hidden Identity after ep 5 and I doubt I'll pick it up, since I was intrigued by Scholar. No time for more than 3 shows!

Hi all:
This week, badly-executed suspense with easy plotting annoyed me.

Episode 5 of Beautiful Bride was way laughable but I still love it. Seriously? The bad guys drove away after knocking down Do Hyung with their car? Why not a second attempt since he was on the floor? I know..silly me..asking for reality in a superhero story. Then there was the “the bad guy who is behind it is…is..is..” then death stops his mouth.

Mask: Ah, woman, why don’t you tell Min Woo that Big Bad Bro-in-law is threatening you? I hate badly-executed suspense.

Then there was Scholar. “The secret to killing Gwi is”…then Death stops his mouth. Death is awfully good at stopping people’s mouth at the dramatic moment.

Really liking Oh My Ghostess. It’s quite a mystery. Am wondering if Wheel-chair-bound Sis or Sweet cop is somehow responsible for ghostess’ death.

Bluebird’s house. YES!!!! Big Bad is finally found out.

Gonna try for Assembly. Trying to catch up on I Remember You. Saw the cast on Getting Together. My love for Seo Inguk keeps growing by leaps and bounds.

This cracked me up on Gag Concert. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lu9F95i29ws

Have a great weekend.

Yes, it's getting more and more like all those other awful "slick" shows. Unfortunate, really.

Mask: Ah, woman, why don’t you tell Min Woo that Big Bad Bro-in-law is threatening you? I hate badly-executed suspense.

Or, you know, that he is trying to kill him. But I guess that's not a priority. I really tried very hard to integrate some characters from those incoherent pieces that the show makers throw at me. But when they assassinate their characters every second scene for "badly-executed suspense" that doesn't make any sense from any perspective, it's soo hard. It's not even funny anymore.

Thanks you two, I wondered if I missed the part explaining why she couldn't come out and tell him the actual story. So, a bit of a new twist on noble idiocy? The fizzy is so effervescent for me, I still wouldn't miss a minute :)

MBB - Yeah, the story of Jang Ho's return turned out to be 100% pfftt. all I could think of was the song "there's a dead skunk lying in the road..."And now, it's hard to care about Redstart (this week's guest gangster) because the baddies are just plain idjets.

Thank goodness for Do Hyung, my non-flimsy flower boy man.

Only seen EP1 of Assembly, so too early to tell. It has started out OK, but is one of those shows that could easily get bogged down in side stories. On the other hand it is about a subject seldom explored in k-dramas. My biggest fear is an overflow of noble idiocy.

Mask is one of those cliche-driven makjang things that I cannot seem to stop liking.

About Mask I have the constant feeling that we're missing something. The last two episodes (both in Mask and in High Society) felt like the writers stating: "OK, I did what you asked, I included the ads, we zoomed on incoherent stuff, but now I put my foot down". The result were two bizarre (not necessarily in a bad way) episodes, slightly hasted with lots of stuff that would make sense only if plot had unreeled in a totally different direction.

I remember you
It's not my cup of tea, but it's just really, really well done.
It's very difficult to integrate and balance character development, overall plot (especially mystery), crime procedural and romance side plot. Most shows wont even try to tackle that, and many shows fall at this hurdle (Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse" might be a paradigmatic example).
Good job, writer and team!

Oh My Ghostess
In terms of commitment from the female lead actress, this reminds me of "Marriage not Dating". TVN once in a while doesn't shy away from very edgy characters who are completely at the mercy of their actors (or, more often: actresses). Park Bo-young is just so great that I cannot bring myself to hate the character accordingly.

High Society
It's really unfortunate. Conceptionally, this could be really great, but because of the screwed up setup and character introduction and major flaws in the story-telling, it's just not working.

Mask
I can finally drop it after episode 15. Before, it's been so bad it was funny, but now it lost even its unintentional humour and is just plain bad.

Beautiful Bride
Oh well ...
I love the flashback approach here.
But the main plot is starting to irritate me. A female lead character who is kidnapped 4 times within 15 minutes of the show is a turn-off for me. MacGuffin much?

Not much actually. I enjoyed "High Society"'s episodes 11 and 12 much more than previous episodes, for example. It's just too little too late for most people, I'd assume.

And "Ghostess" and "Hello Monster" are very enjoyable.

There are some shows I'd like to rewatch eventually, but it's too early for them: I hear your voice, Misaeng, It's okay it's love, Marriage not Dating. Maybe some little older shows like Pasta or Arang.
I'd really like to rewatch "Can We Get Married" after the unfortunate run of "High Society" (and maybe one of the better Hong Sister shows, to get rid of the aftertaste that those 4 episodes of "W&C" left).

Ohh I'd love to do a CWGM rewatch on the OT once High Society is over.

So would you say the mystery/thriller aspect of I Remember You is actually well written? Mysteries (esp. if they're fairly clued) are my kryptonite, but I've been burned by kdramas that just use a non-sensical mystery as a plot-filler *cough SecretHotel cough*.

Required fields are marked *

@ whimsyful

I can safely say that I Remember You thankfully goes nowhere close to My Secret Hotel. The mystery is good and hangs well with each episode's new crime or event contributing more to our understanding of the mystery and the people involved in it. Smart and coherent writing.

0

The mystery is rather cohesive, and the integration into the procedural is very nicely done.

I usually strongly dislike the way K-dramas handle mysteries, but I'm fine with this one so far.

0

In Secret Hotel, the show fell apart into separate sub-plots with almost no interaction (and separate genres too).

"Remember" does the opposite so far. The romance subplot is simply a by-product of the main plot (and because of the lack of focus, it works rather well), there are no inconsequential and stupid plot twists.

0

While thinking about "High Society" and "Oh My Ghostess":

I'm pretty hostile towards idol actors, and "High Society" is a very good example for that: Uee is one main reason why the show has no chance of being good at all, even if the writer didn't screw up.
On "Oh My Ghostess", there's Park Jung-a, who's basically "idol actress done right": She knows what she can and can't do, and she acts accordingly. Of course, it's much easier in a supporting role.

UEE is also the main reason why I don't go near that drama. Tried watching her in Golden Rainbows and Hogu's Love. Dropped both dramas before midway because I was quite bothered with her lack of facial expressions. Esp in Hogu she seems tired/uninterested all the time and has limited expressions.. Sorry UEE fans.
If MGY was to pick HS, I surely would watch it, at least she can act and knows how to make proper facial expressions.
Alas, she didn't and I have enough people complaining about HS storyline, characters, the leads, and why the 2nd leads should be the main couple. A pass for me.

I used to give dramas that might have 1 or 2 idols a chance but honestly if I could, I want those few hours back! That was the end of it and that includes any idol dramas.

0

Oh my god you mention Moon Geun Young! The reminder that she would have played Yoon Ha is just... The drama could have been so much better if MGY signed in. I do enjoy the show to certain extent but the limitation of UEE's acting is hampering the show in the recent episodes.

Both girls in High Society are not impressive to me. I do not like boys in the drama either. SJ is not doing great in this and though people tend to praise the second male lead, I am more impressed with his hair than his acting skill.
I did not know why Uee bothers me,,, now I realized that her iris( eyes) hardly tough the bottom eye lids and often her iris end tad above her bottom eye lids. This somehow makes her look a bit wicked. I am not saying that all people whose iris do not touch their eye lids look wicked,,, but in her case, this makes her a bit wicked to me. I was afraid of mentioning this for fear that people take my opinion offensive but now I said it ( her eyes really bothered me for a long time.)

@atz, lol!
You may be right about the iris and the eyelids ( now, this thing stuck in my head and next week I'll be watching UEE's eyes!) but this is the country where double eyelid cosmetic surgery is served before breakfast. Some of the actors are not probably able to blink in full length; most of them look surprised and smiling constantly because of aesthetic procedures,no doubt. Let alone all those expressionless faces...while acting, go figure!

And those under-eye puffness( I know there is a word for this) that every idol got. When I noticed it for the first time, I said to myself,' do all Asian people have this?' Am I the only one who does not have one though I am Asian?( I hardly see any Asian in where I live) Then I read that they insert hyaluronic acid(?) right below eyes to make their eyes look more attractive.
I am afraid that they have a hard time to move their eyes.lol

0

@atz, I think hyaluronic fillers are being used on areas with the (first) most noticeable wrinkles ( around the mouth and the eyes). Hyaluronic is not exactly an acid per se, that's just its chemical name and it's less harmful than botox which really is an allantoin, hence a muscular toxin.

0

Yeahhh I am disappointed too, I really liked Uee's character but she is just not suitable for the role, the character needs an actress who can express every emotions, the character should portray different emotions while dealing with different persons, Uee even does not express normal four emotions like sorrow, happiness, anger, love etc. She looks weird when she cries, she looks weird when she smiles. Sorry Uee fans Sorry

It is touching, but ... for me, many of the characters didn't have the kind of introduction they needed to make them relatable enough.
One major issue is both a strength and a weakness: the "sociological" approach. Usually, melodramas use a psychological-simplex character design process.
In "Innocent Man", the male lead is defined by one personal issue. The only kind of development he gets comes from the romance plot. This works well, is easy to grasp and is almost riskless.
In "High Society", Joon-ki is a sociologically defined character. There is not one heart-wrenching flashback that tells you everything you need to know about the character. It's much more demanding for the audience -- especially when there is not enough material in the early episodes.

Yes, this drama definitely makes the viewer fill in the "well, you know how that was" background. And it definitely started in the wrong place. I think more emotive actors would bring more feels to the drama, but that said...all that upfront "Rich vs Poor" and "rich folksdon't have true blessings such as family love-trust" heavy-handednesss is still touching me.

Required fields are marked *

Interesting parallels between Innocent Man and High Society. Looking at recent past, KRW in Punch was a similar character, a person who wanted to climb to the top by hook or crook. But there were things that made me root for him, even though he was in the wrong. In High Society, even though intellectually I get SJ's character, I have no affinity to him or to his relationship with UEE.
So I guess a good concept with a bad writer is worse than a bad concept with a good writer.

Happy Eid Mubarrak to all Moslem beanies here!

Spoilers galore ahead:
MASK: *still in dreamland because of that KISS* Took our couple long enough for a second kiss, but well done MW and JS.. Well done! Can I say thank you for our ineffectual villains that still nowhere near their goal but actually make our OTP a little bit closer everytime SH did something bad to MW/JS? Their divorce scene in the courthouse was so funny, they're so upset with each other, but during 1 on 1 counseling both praised each other... LOL. This drama only has 4 eps left but there are so many questions left unanswered.. Hope the writer-nim can tie up the plot holes that as big as blackhole and give us satisfying ending.. With MW and JS head to their honeymoon/holiday with kids for example.

OH MY GHOST: So funny, so cute, it has everything a romcom should has... Park Bo Young and Jo Jung Suk create a cute couple.. PBY really shows she's a good actress here.. Embodied 2 characters with clear differences in personality and even copy Kim Seul Gi's talking style.. So great! Love this drama so far..

SWWTN: Slowly, with plot moves at a snail pace, KSY only ever care about that Diary and the female leads nowhere near interesting enough for me, the drama slowly enter the territory when I just don't care about the plot. I watch this for the vampires! Gwi and Sung Yeol are so sexy.. hope the drama will show us their Big Showdown/Fight.

Because of Mask, I become Soo Ae's fan.. though I'm still curious about her past scandals/rumors.. But she's a great actress.. Mask leads me to watch her other dramas/movies. So far I've watched Sword With No Name (great) and Sunny (good)..
Still waiting for Mask to finish before watching her other dramas fully. I'm interested in Thousand Days Promise, 9 Ends 2 Outs and Yawang. Curious with Athena, but DB ratings for that drama isn't great. So I would just try what I can watch first.

mask Min woo' s character puzzles me. Obviously he and the women he loves are in mortal danger, he is told told that he lives with the doppelganger of his wife, and instead of finding out what the hell is happening, who killed so eun ha and put ji sook in her place, why daddy suddenly wants to make him the inheritor and why he is now prone to deadly accidents, he or prefers to stay ignorant or he just goes around asking 'wife, tell me what's happening? ' 'sis, do you know something, care to tell me? ' bro-in-law, are you behind all this?' Like a big baby. if he keeps on like this, his relationship with his wife will be of mother-son type. is he really gonna play I-am-too-good-for-this-world to be protected by mom (and big sis)? It's Goong all over again 'bad people are trying to hurt the clueless, sensitive prince, while all he wants is play with the princess and his teddy bear'.
It's painful to watch...

I have seen that "total lack of curiosity" syndrome in MANY k-dramas - I guess it is because if anyone actually starts asking questions, they would have to cut out about half the episodes. +1 I feel that even if those parts had been written in, they might later have been edited out or not even included in the show. Usually I pretend that it's quite normal for people to not to ask too much in dramas just to get to the next plot point and not belabor the previous ones.

The question that I was surprised did not get investigated by Dad Choi is, if MY killed EH, then who the heck is MW married to. He is only concerned that the video of MY does not get released and is prepared to accept the current EH as the original, is the only way I can figure it out.

But it's sad knowing that Min is a bad guy, and I just stop imagining what could be happened to Min and Hyun regarding that fact. I feel bad for Hyun though.

Drama moment this week:
I went to a family reunion in Colorado this past week. On the SkyBus back to the airport, I sat next to an asian woman who I recognized immediately as being Korean because of her clothing. LOL. Anyway, we got to talking about Korea and dramas and K-POP. She prefers to live in Colorado (who wouldn't?) and told me a lot about Seoul and her in-laws. She was surprised that I liked K-dramas, didn't see to believe me, so I pulled up my Instagram account and showed her all the actors and actresses I follow. She started gushing about all the cute boys (we are both Ahjummas) and then got super opinionated about the girl bands being too scantily dressed. Ha. Made the ride to the airport go by fast.

Watched:
High Society--I am still obsessed with this drama. If there were more episodes left, I could imagine a couple switch, but with only four, that doesn't seem feasible. I loved all the puppy eyes in the last episode. I would think at least one person would try to show up their partner--but no--they all want to show how much the other has hurt them. Funny. I cheered when Joon-Ki intervened with the wrist grab. It's about time K-Drama men learned to use their words. I do like how feminist this show is (even a UEE shower scene), even if it lacks finesse.

I Remember You--Continuing to watch despite the evil.

Mask--Okay, what was with that hunting trip? Who separates alone from the hunting party? Why weren't they wearing orange? What were they hunting? With those rifles, I assumed deer. Is it deer season in Korea? I did love how the costumes made it look like an asian version of a Jane Austin scene. Otherwise, it made no sense except as a means for attempted murder.

My Love Eun-dong--Spoiler--I KNEW he was going to kill himself. So selfish. That poor little boy. That's all I can say. Glad this week is the last. It was an okay show, but 95% angst. Egad.

Word from Warm Heart--More angst. Still wondering if the couples will be able to work it out.

I wish I could explain.... that's been the puzzle among several puzzles. Maybe Seok Hoon is still delusional. He thinks no matter what, as long as the money goes to Ji Sook, he will be able to manipulate her (using her family again?) into giving him the assets.

I loved how she was giving her away as fast and as much as possible to try to upset his apple cart, and how she kept challenging him to put the money where his mouth was and to make a better world for the less fortunate.

Hello Beanies~ Had a busy weekend last week hence I had to miss the open thread but I'm back, yay

The Time I Loved You - What a prick Cha Seo Hoo is, right? I'm so irritated at his entitled, let-me-talk-only-about-what-I-want attitude. You left her at the altar and unless you were on your deathbed, there's no acceptable reason why you can go claim you didn't leave your bride. So Eun is veering towards inappropriate territory with her "naive" meddling in Hana's affairs but so far, her single-mindedness of pursuing Won is still tolerable. Choi Won, my dear, have you finally made up your mind in taking risks with your relationship with Hana more than the micromanagement strictly as a guy friend? Hmmm, we'll see where this resolve takes you both.

What happened with Mi Hyang unni and Mir, though? I hope this isn't some kind of metaphor for the writers change again but yeah, I'm really curious since she's the fanclub president, if I'm not mistaken.

Still have to catch up on Hwajung and Hidden Identity

Mask - Jisook sure knows how to smartly utilize her Seo Eun Ha powers, even though for the life of me, I cannnot figure out what's so wrong with just telling it's all Sukhoon's doing in the first place. Writernim, there's a bigger plan at play here, yes? I really thought she would just be heroically saving Minwoo from the lights and the incident in the hunting grounds but the reversal in the first was welcome. And Minwoo, you dorky chaebol heir, I fully support you not letting her go the noble idiot route and divorce. Instead, face the problems as husband and wife. And make us swoon with those quite public show of love. Thanks.

Oh My Ghostess - I was lucky to catch the stream earlier and it's so good to have both Seul Gi and Bo Young acting on the same screen. I do want this not just to be solely about Shinae, at the cost of shelving Bongsun's side of the story and the show's on the same page. Jo Jungseok must continue with the infinitely adorable scenes with the corgi, I'm melting from all the cute. Mr. Police gets more sinister with each episode though, no wonder I can't get into him, despite his sunny outside persona.

Today's drama news is literally Oh My God. Dammit, that's smooth, KBS~ (Please don't ruin the pairing, I still cherish the daydreams I have because of their billboard in EDSA.) Also, if they succeed getting Sungjae on Murim School, I expect it would be much harder to say, "No," unrealistic promises aside.

I'm watching My Love, Eundong and Hidden Identity concurrently now.

Hidden Identity has a few plot flaws (I posted one that made me double take on the last recap) but overall, I'm enjoying the chase and of course, Nam Inho both intrigues and chills me at the same time. ;w;

As for My Love Eundong, I'm an unapologetic apologist for Jaeho and to be fair, he needs help, not people dogpiling him all over for attempting suicide. The biggest victim is still the son, that's caught in this entire fiasco. It's ending soon, so I'm just...hoping things don't go the way I heard it was going ;;;

No worry on MLED. (so-called) well-made melo My love Eundong is finished! Yay for happy ending after 1 year jump. Eveybody is happy (but I hoped Eundong's hubby and EunHo's sister to become an couple). I loved movie-like cinematography, in addition to innocent first love stroy.
Joo JinMo when filming the last scene said he felt sad, but he did his best to the end. He felt that this was the first time he received so much love etc. I am glad the show was well received.

Watching weekend shows for the most part.

I don't think I'm going to follow The Time I've Loved You . I like HJW, but the show is lacking.

Still watching In Time With You.

Need to catch up on Scholar

Looking forward to this week's My Beautiful Bride and Oh My Ghostess.

Watched British TV, Tess of the d'Urbervillesand a couple episodes of Rumpole of the Bailey

Also two episodes of a J food centered show,Ramen Loving Girl

Hello everyone! Eid Mubarak to everyone who is celebrating!

Princess Jellyfish - How did I just know about this now?? I loved it! I have read the Kuragehime(?) manga before, and I liked it enough. So when I saw the movie was out, I watched it straightaway. The romance was a bit short and inconclusive, but the movie makes up for it in heart and humor. It was a really fun watch!

When I See You Again - This drama is seriously full of misunderstandings, it does get on the nerves at times. But, one smile from Jasper Liu and all is forgiven! His dimples! Yum!! And I have never seen Mandy Wei in any dramas before but she is not bad at all. Especially when she gets angry, its like watching fireworks, very pretty and very hot. I finally know what it truly means when a girl is pretty when she is angry. I fell in love with her a little in Episode 5 (i think..) after she blew up. Haha..

Korean dramas I'm watching:
I remember you (Love the plot! and SIG's smolder!)
Oh My Ghostess (Nervous about next episode when the ghost is out of the body. What if I don't feel the fun chemistry between them anymore?)
The Time We Were Not In Love (Getting bored. Don't like second lead.)

That's it for now! Have a great day y'all!

Is anyone watching Late Night Restaurant? (Y'know, the one with Kim Seung Woo as a chef who makes anything you want but is only open from 12am-7am) Just watched the first 2 episodes the other day and was pleasantly surprised! I know nothing about the original so it was very refreshing and heartwarming. Kind of sad each episode is only 30 minutes but I guess they're like mini stories so any longer would be draggy.

Yes, one of the better shows. Apparently the licensing got screwed up - Viki was subbing it, but now it seems like DramaFever has the exclusive, and it is a few days behind on EP3 and 4.

@Jinny
I watched the first 2 episodes. It's good that it's short and to the point and that every episode has its own complete "story" (another commenter called it a slice of life and that is quite accurate too) and stands on its own. We can watch if we like and miss a week or two and it will not matter.

I was commenting elsewhere about it... I felt it had different feel to it and they way many scenes were shot, the props, the background that felt like a backdrop... gave me the illusion that I was watching a live stage play rather than a drama. And at the end it is as if the actors come back on stage to take a bow… well there was no bowing to the audience, but it had that feel with the front view of the doorway as they left the restaurant.

I like that it has a different human interest story each week. There's pathos, real people, and maybe a comment about society.

Random Thoughts about this show:
At the diner ad hoc strangers gather, observations, impressions and judgements are made, but the people who are the most interesting (those in dark glasses) may not fit the original impression that they gave.

Sharing a meal around the same counter, sort of breaking bread together, face-to-face and sharing in the largesse of the owner who has a unique way of charging for his meals seems to encourage the people there to relate with more generosity and consideration for each other than they might at other restaurants.

Gifts/opportunities can be given indirectly and without fanfare in the diner/through the chef: who acts as a link and channel of hope?

The next episodes seem to be postponed... so I'm waiting to see what we get next. :)

I am now watching

Oh my Ghostess: Right now , this I the only show I really don't want to miss a single episode :) like both the leads.

I remember you: I have some questions unanswered but that is the fun of the show. All the actors are soooo good , I am happy that SIG and JNR don't have to carry the whole show solely specially the Min is really has a pull. Too bad ratings are not great :( hope they will catch the bus and speed up :). Fighting!!!!

SWWTS: Well , I am watching it, the show has done great work with the casting, that's why they may be able to save the show. BGM is just awful, it destroys the whole environment and directing is not great either. I am a fan of KSE and a growing fan of LSH . Acting is really great in the show.

Mask: Watching for Yeon Jung Hyun, that's it, he made me a fan

High Society: May drop it for Uee but I have grown an attachment with it, so watch it very lazily.

I have free time now, so I read a dramabeans recap of "Flower For My Life" of Cha Tae Hyun , and I could not stop and finished the whole series in one read. The drama was really good , obviously JB's writing skills are commendable, if I get a chance I would watch it

Here's my few suggestions:
For sageuk:
Empress Ki
Jang Ok Jung
Dong Yi
(basically any sageuk with King and Queen as the main leads)

For modern dramas:
Heard It Through Grapevine
Full House
Goong
Wonderful Life

High five, chinggu! Ah.. I love that kind of sageuk too! Like The Three Musketeer. I have yet to watch Empress Ki, it seems like the ending was sad. Jang Ok Jung! I still have a few episode to finish it :) I plan to watch Dong Yi too, but looking at the number of episodes..omo..

Full House? They are married in that? Need to watch it again. I kind of forget the stoyline. I've watch Goong, love it too. Is Wonderful Life the one with Eugene? It's been a long time since I watched that. Thank you for the suggestion, chinggu!

If you fancy a more regular kdrama-with-married-leads, try Goong - Joo Ji-hoon is also the leading man of that one!

And Heard It Through the Grapevine has two sets of married couples as leads (a young married couple, and the husband's parents), but it's really not like other kdramas at all. It is a GREAT drama though.

Delightful Girl Chun-hyang has that kind of plot, the leads are forced to get married for propriety's sake and fall in love later.

But the ultimate married-couple romcom in recent years is Fated To Love You - the leads get married because of a surprise pregnancy.

@azraqey

A bluff couple contract of sorts and then fall in love for real - "Lie to Me" had it. It was a very nice romance although the 2nd leads were just a waste of time. The OTP itself was great... lots of nice moments.

- Marry Me Mary/Mary Stayed Out All Night - did have some sort of agreement but not necessarily written. 2 guys and 1 girl and 1 more female to make a quadrangle.

I can't say I CARE about the police love line, but because I like the actor playing the traitor, and of course Lee Si young, I'm taking their love line as a necessary boredom.

The characters don't feel as nuanced as the ones in Heartless City. I hope we get a little more of that.

I was surprised by Kim Mu Yeol. Doing and excellent job especially the martial arts scenes.

Heard he's a musical actor too.
He does an outstanding job.. Someone to watch out for!

Hello Beanies! Happy Eid!

I can't believe that I prioritizedWarm and Cozy over Mask. Now I'm marathoning it! I pause once in a while to look at the recap and too bad there's no one to discuss about it. I love the twisted way of how they are falling in love, just like in Secret.

OMG is so much fun! PBY is awesome. I'm tempted to watch it raw right now.

The Scholar. This is my first sageuk after several months of shying away from this genre. I don't know why vampire stories doesn't appeal to me anymore and that's coming from someone who watches and read novels about vampire. Still I'm all for LJK who is always compelling on his acting. And Gwi.. I mean LHS I think is a real vampire! hahaha! I want to see the rest of the vampire from Vampirutus to cameo. hehe

Considering others talking about I Remember You makes me want to consider that drama too! But I'm planning to see old Soo Ae dramas... so..

So actually I don't know if I'll have time because of a new job which will let me watch a few dramas. But Joo-won's drama is coming up too...

It's starting to drag for The Time We Were Not In Love... I'm not liking LJW's hair, good thing that HJW stopped raking her hair with her hand. I love HJW outfits but I can't understand why she is always carrying 2 bags/purse, unless its a trend now.

Happy Friday, y'all!! :)

What I'm Watching this Week:

Scholar Who Walks the Night: The acting in this is top-notch, no lie. But the Inappropriately-Loud soundtrack is so jarring that it really screws with my enjoyment.

Kitchen Musical: This is a Singapore show that's so weird I just can't stop watching. It's about a high-end restaurant where people burst into song. And it has writers that don't know much at all about restaurant work/cooking.

My Beautiful Bride: Definitely filling my cop-show-shaped empty place. :)

Hidden Identity: I'm just not caught up yet, so...

K-drama Moments:

1. Had a patron come in complaining about how she can't get Korean movies at the library. :big grin: "Oh, let me show you what we have".

2. I got made a qualified contributor at Viki (sweet - free Viki pass!), and I've been enjoying learning more about the segmenting & subbing process. (Also: happening onto 'Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend' in the soundtrack of a Chinese show was a surprise.)

3. My youngest is still up at her Granny's. My mother is not an adventurous eater. The last time I spoke to the girlchild she said "I miss Asian food."

Hidden Identity is just a bit weirdly disjointed, and for a main lead, Gun-woo's character is not that fleshed out at all? I honestly prefer OCN for procedurals, they do it better (see: My Beautiful Bride).

Scholar Who Walks The Night is just so gloriously cheesy, I love it. Everyone - Lee Jun-ki, Lee Soo-hyuk, Lee Yubi especially- hamming like their lives depend on it, but somehow it suits the tone of the show and is delivered in a way that fits (credit to the actors for that).

And your daughter sounds like me when I was younger, ha.

Yeah...I think I'm losing interest. Beautiful Bride is awesome - I'm trying to find time to binge it. :) So far, I haven't watched any OCN show that I didn't like.

I've lost interest in Hidden Identity as well. The problem seems, for me at least, to be that there's been an attempt to replicate the OCN formula without coming to grips with the real reason for the success of the OCN procedural. It's all about the story and the characters - a good story makes for compelling characters and with HI, the story simply isn't there so I don't care about the characters. It is trying to hit all the bases, dark anti-hero with a painful past, a team leader who is prepared to break all the rules, mysterious evil genius villain and so on. We have loan sharks, weaponized viruses, counterfeiting etc. But Gun-woo just comes off as petulant and grumpy, Moo-won doesn't seem to understand what the rules even are so his breaking off them seem arbitrary. And who the heck is our villain and what is his agenda for all this mayhem anyway? Does he even have one? It's all too complex.

My Beautiful Bride, on the other hand, has a pretty simple story structure. Boy gets girl, boy loses girl and I hope eventually boy will get girl back in one piece and with a happy ending but I have a feeling this one will end in tears. The structure is simple but the plot is compelling and the characters are what makes it watchable.

Right? It's not all about the violence and grittiness - it's about the characters and their complicated motivations. That's what I loved about all their series - that no matter how over-the-top the action was, the characters were all rooted in believable emotional journeys.

It's supposed to be summer here, instead it's been raining and been cold. I hate it, maybe I should move back to Japan.
Some new doramas and dramas started, I've been saving up on oh my ghostess as I know I want to watch several eps in a row.

Can't make up my mind on the new Death Note, I still think Matsuyama Kenichi was the better L and the changes to the characters are not appealing.

Midnight Diner, it's nice but the original still is better. The restaurant looks nicer though in the kdrama but I quite like the charm that the original had.

37.5°C no Namida, haven't watched the first episode yet but plan to check it out.
Tantei no tantei, Kitagawa Keiko is a hit or miss for me.

And I'm really worried that the Kuragehime live action movie is terrible. I love the manga and anime but I think Rena Nounen is miscast.

Hi, everyone. I Posted some new work on my deviantart page I've decided to try editing scanned pencil drawings on MS Paint. It's very difficult to draw things from scratch, so to speak, on paint, using a mouse. Even when working with scanned drawing, it still takes a lot of effort and time to go over every hand-drawn line in order to be able to edit and color. I still have so much to learn, but I'm more comfortable sticking to Paint at this point because photo shop seems too complicated for a complete newbie. I'm not ready to watch tutorials at this point :). "Troubled Thoughts" is my latest work. You can click into the image to get a better view if you want.

I also submitted my short story to a publication and am crossing my fingers. I don't know when I'll get any feedback, but I know that the publication is supposed to come out next year.

Take care, everyone!

Interesting drawing (of a drawing?) art. I can imagine it must have taken a lot of time and effort. Instead of a mouse, you may like to invest in a tablet and pen. I may (or may not, I'm not sure) reduce the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome from too much mouse or repeated pattern of wrist usage.

All the best on your short story publication!!

Hello everyone! Been a looooong time since I've been here but that's mostly because I hadn't been drama-watching for a while either---somehow got burned out from Kdramas. I've mostly started a lot of dramas but then ended up dropping somewhere between episodes 2 and 3. I just want to gripe about all the dramas I've watched and dropped thus far.

Dropped:

Angry Mom: even though most kdramas are so exaggerated, I was still turned off by the farfetched reality of this world. I think I was just not in the mood for dark school bullying at the time so will attempt this later.

Superdaddy Yeol: watched this for Lee Dong Gun and some cute father-daughter moments but hated the female character so much in the beginning. I also heard the male character wasn't such hot stuff either as the story went on so never bothered to go back.

Hogu's Love:Different from expectations; I wanted light, cute fluffy romance between beta male and heroine but this ended up being more serious. Maybe another time?

Girl Who Sees Smells: Stupid cops were a major turn-off and despite everyone saying female actress rocked the role and there was chemistry between leads, I didn't see it nor feel it. Found the actress awkwardly stilted in her acting and just couldn't feel sparks between the leads.

Warm and Cozy I used to have a soft spot for the "girl in love with boy in love with first love" storyline but I guess my tastes have changed or this story didn't do justice to the way I wanted the story to run.

School 2015: Hated the romance and felt disappointed that I didn't have the feels that School 2013 gave me.

Mask: I was soooo anticipating this drama because it was being penned by Secret writer which I loved but couldn't stand the inconsistent tone, storyline, and characters. I was so hooked onto the idea of male lead being made into a lunatic by drugs and hypnosis and female lead doing all that she can to obtain what she wants...basically crazy makjang like Secret but I got something much less than that. Especially the fact that it was unintentionally funny.

The Time I've Loved You: didn't watch the original Taiwanese version but still disliked this. HJW's voice makes me cringe at times and leads are obviously into each other which makes them holding themselves back seem stupid. All I ask for is a bigger conflict.

High Society: I think I found a pattern. Something about UEE always turns me off. Can't pinpoint what but I never get invested in her dramas. And now I found the same happening with Sung Joon. I just feel super indifferent to these two whenever they are in a drama.

The only winner amongst all these dramas is
....

....I Remember You. How shall I gush and squee over this drama? My insides are spazzing out from the slow-burn romance and character-driven plot. I never saw the appeal of SIG before (his looks actually kept me away from Reply 1997, what...

....I Remember You. How shall I gush and squee over this drama? My insides are spazzing out from the slow-burn romance and character-driven plot. I never saw the appeal of SIG before (his looks actually kept me away from Reply 1997, what I saw of him in Master's Sun wasn't intriguing, and I'm not so fond of noona romances to be watching High School King of Savvy), but here I am melting away with each subtle expression that plays out on his face. And how awesome is Jang Nara as this tiny framed cop who kicks ass in a matter-of-fact way and is deliciously awkward when dealing with hero. Love the side characters, mystery, and excellent blend of comedy and thrills. This drama just clicked with me and I want more.

I'm also anticipating Yongpal for its unusual premise (way better than genius doctoring in hospitals with hospital politics) and should be watching Scholar Who Walks the Night for my lovely oppa LJK but not in the mood for fusion sageuk yet. I'll let a few more weeks go by before I start watching.

That's it. I had to let all my complaints out in hopes that my burnout stage will finally end and I can pick up more dramas that make me go crazy in anticipation.

re: Girl Who Sees Smells, I honestly think Shin Se-kyung was way overhyped - she was better than her own previous performances, sure, but a VERY long way off from being good. I'd say she was just about bearable, and still looked like she was trying too hard to look wide-eyed and sweet all the time. And she and Yoochun were cute together but definitely not the romance of the year or anything.

As for High Society, I agree. I find Uee very samey in all her acting roles, and sometimes it works (Ojakkyo Bros, You're Beautiful) and sometimes it doesn't (almost everything else she's in). I see some people on other sites claiming she's the best idol actress of her generation, but quite honestly her skill levels are way overhyped and her default bitchface expression isn't a draw at all. I'd still take Jung Eun-ji or Choi Soo-young over her.

Choi Soo Young was wonderful in My Spring Days. Just the right amount of bright and full of hope and the right amount of sad/pathos and letting go.

Seriously, I don't know why her agency doesn't get her more acting gigs instead of the "prettier" but far less talented members of her group. She'd wipe the floor with all of them.

For anyone fairly fluent in Korean, which site do you think has better english subs in general, Viki or Dramafever?

Secondly, which site has better english subs when it comes to Mask specifically? Thank you!

I must say this week has been kind of difficult..i was depressed more than usual because of life and whatever..so I escaped to dramaland.

Finally marathoned King of Dramas and omg now I know what everyone is talking about when they mention Anthony..Lol. so so so good. :)

Scholar- um I just love it so much. It's just the perfect amount of cheese for me.
OM- idk what's going on here but I plan on reading the recaps.
Ghostess- in love with this one. It keeps surprising me how good it is..and its getting even better.
Remember you- what can I say..its my favorite drama right now.
Mask- just reading recaps now but still like all the drama.
Time I loved- still really like this one although Won really doesn't make sense why he just doesn't make that happen..
Eundong- this one drives me crazy but I can't stop..lol
high society- another annoying one but mostly cuz I just don't like yoonha..second leads ftw.
Beautiful bride- following this one on a different site..really interesting.
I want to try Assembly but it looks kinda boring..we shall see if I keep up with it.
That's it. :) hope next week is a better one. At least I'm going to Kirsten next week.

@fantasy

+100 JCW just wonderful in so many ways. And the best part is that he still seems pretty humble and down-to-earth. He knows he's good and still has room to grow, and has been consistently improving as he picks up each project, so we have much to look forward to when he returns to our screens (maybe in 3 years' time if he enlists?)

Hey everybody...happy OT!

This week went by in a blur...yikes. Can't believe it's already the later part of July! 0.0

Midnight Diner: raved about this last week, and I'm still loving it. I've had to resort to watching it raw elsewhere because apparently it's no longer available in the U.S. on their site (boo). It's a breath of fresh air to me, especially being in the midst of a drama lull -- haven't really found much appeal to the various ones I tune in to, just to see what they are.
Thank you to John for explaining what jdrama it's a remake of...if I find the time, I might actually look for and tune into the original!

Hidden Identity: It's beginning to feel a bit disjointed, with the back and forth plotlines and plotholes that are beginning to screw with the flow of the show - to me, at least. Gun-woo is coming off the rails in his thirst to avenge Tae-hee's death, but dude...Nam In-ho is one twisted bastard. And how he froze instead of offing him when he had the chance, argh. Tae-in appealing to Team Leader Jung about being less harsh on Gun-woo after he went rogue was sweet in regards to the bromance, but Gun-woo isn't thinking rationally and causing more problems for the team. I'm still wishing the writer can flesh out Gun-woo as a character soon, but I'm not holding my hopes up.

Let Her Cry: one major secret exposed after another...wowzers. My gut instinct that eldest hyung was still around proved to be right, and I just can't wait to see Eun-su get her comeuppance - what a piece of work. I'm thinking her son ain't his son either...just being the gold-digging viper she is. While my heart breaks for Jin-woo (well...ok, actually Son Chang-eui) -- will the otp be able to get through this obstacle? I sure hope it won't be Thrice Married Woman part deux, in regards to SCH's character.

Take Care of My Dad: I've been tuning into this on and off since its premiere, but now it's growing on me! It's so interesting to see the dynamics of all four celeb dads and their daughters, and to see these dads in 'real life' other than their on-screen personas. The ep I tuned into this week was the Jejudo trip and having the daughters try to see if they're on the same wavelength. It was interesting to see how both Jo Jae-hyun's & Jo Min-ki's daughters guessed correctly which food they would pick - and how the other two daughters selected wrong (and had to sit and eat in awkward silence with someone else's dad).

Oh My Ghostess: caught the first 2 eps. Kim Seul-gi is hilariously adorable as the ghost and it's good to see Jo Jung-seok back to dramaland.

The casting of OMG is definitely OMG!!! I've been waiting for So Ji-sub and Shin Min-ah to dramaland and to have both signed for the drama? WOW. The plot sounds a bit weird, but I hope it'll get adjusted.

Have a great weekend, yall! :)

I came late but still here.....happy weekend, everyone!

I'm currently watching only Scholar Who Walks the Night and Oh My Ghostess, and love them both but in different ways.

SWWTN is cheesier and hammier than a Han-river-sized ham sandwich with cheese, but I enjoy the hell out of it. It's no Arang, but I have to give special props to my girl Lee Yubi for playing a character who ticks off every box for things I find annoying and yet playing her in a way that doesn't actually annoy me at all.

She reminds me a little bit of Shin Mina, in that she has an incredible amount of natural aegyo in addition to her distinctive beauty, which makes her cutesy character charming instead of generic kpop idol-like. And also like Shin Mina, serious and emotional scenes are where she shines even more - her character here is a human sugar high so she doesn't get more of those but she had a very brief flash of one in the scene where Yang-sun tells Yoon to leave as she's being harassed by debt collectors. I wish she got more of those because the men get scenes showing more depth too. She can still be endearing and funny with those!

Also big props to Changmin as Prince Yoon, who has acquitted himself remarkably well in the role so far. No large ham tendencies or woodenness, and he's actually quite natural in his acting (no surprise at all that he's Eumlan Seoseng, given his slightly shifty expression when Yang-sun brought up those books at their first meeting - a small detail that actually makes the reveal believable). Not bad at all.

Lee Soo-hyuk is actually going LARGE HAM on Gwi, but weirdly, it fits the tone of the story and he has enough presence to pull it off. Though Gwi really is behaving like a stalking ex to Sung-yeol, lol. That scene where he 'welcomes' Sung-yeol to the world of beasts could not have more homoerotic undertones if it tried - he's literally holding him within kissing distance after killing off Sung-yeol's fiancee!

Currently watching I Remember You and Oh My Ghostess.

And what can I say, I just love the female leads, JNR and PBY, in these shows. I love JNR in her role as Ji An because she's so spunky and kick-ass. I see a bit of Chae Young-Shin (of Healer, duh) in her, I dunno why though. PBY, on the other hand, is just so adorable and charismatic. I am amazed on how she can act cute and dramatic scenes without being annoying.

But out of these two dramas, I'm really loving I Remember You more. The actors in this show are SO FREAKIN' good, like literally every single one them, even the cops (because there's a mystery behind one of them, not just sure which one). And I love that the plot isn't dumbed down for the viewers (ahem, GWSS). The writers make us think and analyse the situations, along with the characters. It's been a while since I've been waiting so eagerly for Mondays to come.

On the side note, everyone is talking about Mask. Is it good? I like dramas which are either mentally-stimulating or the leads' chemistry is good+decent storyline. Should I watch it?

Planning to watch SWWTN. I'm just gonna wait for more episodes to come out before I start because I know I'm gonna like it since I'm a sucker for vampire stories. I just don't want to wait because it's literally emotionally painful. :))

@DAEBAK

About Mask... I feel you should watch the first 4 episodes and decide. The first 2 episodes were really great at grabbing interest and got viewers engaged. After that it got less coherent although the overall story is the same. It's addictive and good to watch for the OTP arc, for answers to what the bad guy(s) are going to come up with and how the good guys (or gal in this case) is going to upset their plans. I'm enjoying it a lot while keeping an eye closed to the unintentionally funny bits and the plot holes. :)

for Mask and SWWTN , one thing is sure you are going to get hot, sexy actors as villains :), one thing I got from Mask is Yeon Jung Hyun , I never watched him before, now I am a fan and finished VP season 1 and 2.

In SWWTN, Lee Soo Hyuk is dazzling

@Daebak

I anticipated Mask a lot before its airing when I know it comes from Secret writer (already can spot his writing style). It did good and I love the chemistry of all leads. But, though my love for it is running deep, I admitted that the first four episodes were kind of slow, and sometimes the balance of the characters development seems imbalance. But then, the thrilling plotline and strong acting keeps me to stay.

It make you guessing a lot and question the human nature, ha!

Anyway, you should give it a chance even if you're not Secret's fan. :)

I am just now catching up with Hwajung which I dropped for a while. The problem I have with dramas and films based on real events is they often become just too painful to watch. We know that ultimately Gwanghae is going to get deposed, Sado is going to get into the rice chest and so on. It's all so tragic because we know what is going to happen. History is not going to be rewritten as much as we want it to be. In the case of Gwanghae, it seems like an opportunity was lost for Korea when he was replaced by Injo. He seemed to have a vision for the whole society rather than a furthering of the factional politics as usual.

The thing about Hwajung that I am most intrigued by though is just how poorly served Joseon Koreans were by their elite governing class. Not that I'm particularly blaming the Korean elite - they are doing what elites everywhere do. They want to keep their power and expand their power base. It seems to me that the whole problem was that there was nothing in place to ensure a clear line of succession to the throne so different factions could line up behind different candidates. Some of these candidates were the children of what we in the west referred to as mistresses. Concubines by another name.

Joseon was an absolute monarchy, not a parliamentary democracy so a clear heir to the throne was essential especially for a country that was a client state of other, larger powers. These outside forces would not have been able to meddle so much in Joseon's internal affairs had a clear method for ensuring succession been in place.

Contrast what happened with Seonjo's legitimate minor son and heir with Mary, Queen of Scots. She inherited the throne of Scotland when she was six days old even though she had older adult brothers who were the sons of mistresses. In Scotland, Gwanghae wouldn't have had a chance to take the throne. His monarch would have been his legitimate half sister because, even though she was less than a week old, she was the clear and acknowledged heir of their father, King James the Fifth.

If such a system were in place in Joseon, Gwanghae might have risen to a position of tremendous power and could have become a wise counsellor to the new child king but he never would have been king himself. He had a vision for Joseon and perhaps it could have been put into place if he had been forced to work though and with his brother rather than as king himself. And his brother, clearly acknowledged as the rightful king, would have been less susceptible to factional influences.

I would quibble with Joseon being labeled an absolute monarchy--in name only, maybe, but after the first couple of kings the ministers held all the power. Likewise, imo the problem wasn't the lack of clear succession rites, it was the historical precedent set by Sejo's coup at the beginning (and you'll notice, peak) of the dynasty. He crippled monarchical power, essentially giving the court power over the throne from there on out, and just cause to pick their own king whenever they wished. Royal kinsmen did wield the power of regency at various points--just look at figures like Queen Insoo and Queen Junghee, Taejong after he abdicated, or Heungsun Daewongun--but there would have been no place for Gwanghae, because one faction or other would have turned him into a rallying point opposite the rightful heir, in case he did not satisfy their demands.

In fact, you could almost argue that dysfunction in Joseon arose out of having a clear line of succession, if you look at earlier succession struggles--both Lee Bang-won (Taejong) and Sooyang (Sejo) were better candidates overlooked for direct heirs and eldest sons, and we all know how that turned out (the difference being Lee Bang-won had consolidated power long before, while Sejo relied on the power of the courtiers, hence Taejong made way for Sejong the Great, while Sejo ruined the dynasty). There are post-Sejo examples of this, too--just look at what happened with Injo and Crown Prince Sohyun, or the constant threats to Jeongjo's legitimacy, one of Joseon's greatest kings, because of his deposed father.

Though now that I think about it, I may have just been proving your point. If Taejo had established a clear line of succession from the beginning and codified it into law, in a perfect world Taejong might never have happened, then Sejo and Yeonsangun would never have happened, there would have been no "just cause" that could trump the law of the land, etc. I just have a hard time divorcing the issue of succession from the primacy of the court's interests, I guess.

I thought the promotional stills for "I Remember You" were kind of stupid, but I had a friend on twitter going on and on about it, so I tried it and now I've binge-watched the first five episodes today and I wish I'd waited til it was complete.

What day does this series air?

hey guys I am new to Dramabeans but not to Korean Dramas, however I watch them occasionally and I have hardly seen 5 dramas. So it would be great if you guys could help me find a light hearted drama? Something like Falling for innocence. I know the story of FFI was a little weak but the humor was on spot so I need to watch sth good in the rom-com genre maybe? Though I like action shows (healer, city hunter) more because I think they are a full package. They contain humor, a good love story and lots of action but right now I would prefer to watch sth pretty light hearted. Thank you :)

If that one is too much, try "Hedgehog & Panda" - it's very sweet & predictable.
