Kim Ji-suk coaches the cheer squad for Sassy, Go Go

A high school drama’s gotta have teachers, and KBS’s Sassy, Go Go has lined up their faculty with the casting of Kim Ji-suk (Unkind Women), In Kyo-jin (Birth of a Beauty, Gu-am Heo Jun), and Lee Mi-do (Mr. Baek, Mi-rae’s Choice) as teachers, and Park Hae-mi (A Daughter Just Like You, School 2013) as the principal.

Kim Ji-suk plays an alum of the high school where he’s now a contract teacher (as in, not permanently tenured), who talks gruffly to his troublemaker kids but has a warm heart. When he was at the school, he was part of the Baek Ho club, which is the cheer team mostly composed of the elite, spec-conscious kids with academic ambitions. The club has seen better days, though, and Kim Ji-suk will be assigned as the teacher in charge; the club is forced to merge with the dance club early on, kicking off the conflict between the school elites and misfits.

In Kyo-jin plays a teacher who gets caught up in an “unusual relationship” with Kim Ji-suk, though we aren’t told how. He’ll be a flattery king who’s the right-hand man to the principal, which makes me think he’ll be in conflict with Kim — antagonistic, perhaps, or maybe just annoying. Annoying would be fun.

Lee Mi-do, on the other hand, will help Kim Ji-sung in running Baek Ho and was herself once a cheerleader, even winning a world championship back in her heyday. Park Hae-mi is back in the principal’s role after playing one in School 2013, which reminds me that she does a good job taking characters who might be difficult to like on paper and making them at least relatable — her decisions in School were often at odds with with I wanted for our kids, but you understood why it was important for her to enforce the rules in principle.

As a fun bit of additional trivia, the cast members have a number of prior connections from other projects, such as Kim Ji-suk and Lee Mi-do acting together in their last drama, Unkind Women. Kim also did a drama with Park Hae-mi, though I don’t recall that their characters interacted much in Personal Taste, where she played Lee Min-ho’s mother and he was Lee Min-ho’s rival. And then, Kim also worked with In Kyo-jin in I Need Romance 2012, where Kim was the second lead love interest and In was linked romantically to a secondary character. Basically, it’s all two degrees of Kim Ji-suk here.

With students and teachers now set, Sassy, Go Go ought to be heading into shoots soon — it premieres in under a month, airing its first episode on Monday, October 5.

Great, I like Lee Mi Do since she played the sister of Nara in Fated to Love You, I'm glad to see her in a new drama
I'm not familiar with the rest of the actors...
Let's see where it's going and hope for the best ^^

I'd watch for In Gyo-Jin alone. Like an aged wine, he gets better and better in his acting. The last couple of years - in both "Tears of Heaven" and "Make a Woman Cry" he showed how good he is in very different roles. The first as a knight in shining armor, and the 2nd as a villain whom everyone loved to hate. I'd take him over all of the kid idols any day of the week. While I loved "Unkind Women" - Kim Ji-Su was pretty forgettable in it - while Lee Mi-Do's performance in it is memorable and chilling.

Wait - Isn't she also doing the web-drama with Kim Jae-Wook?

I'm actually getting excited for this one despite the odd premise. The cast is pretty good and I always love Eunji. Hopefully, it's just fun and feel good. That's all I ask.

Very strange that cheer leading is presented as apple polishing here, and that the cheerleaders are supposed to be academically inclined...as an American (and a nerd) my head is about to explode from the existential paradox that represents. Things must work very differently in Korea.

wow they do need to get a move on filming, and quickly - if the drama's set to premiere after the current Mon-Tues slot they really don't have much time left.

@juniper, I don't think that they're implying that cheerleaders are more academically inclined. I think the setting is a school in which all students are expected to be well rounded, therefore are able to excel in activities like cheerleading while getting good grades.

Oh okay, that makes a little more sense. But again, if they're so elite they're thinking of applying to top schools in America, cheer leading ain't gonna help them...it's not really respected as a sport (which is a can of worms I won't open here), and it's not exactly the "look-I-have-brain-cells!" attention-grabber that model UN or student council would be.

Anyway, it just seems weird to think of cheer leading as a path to emancipation from high school, when all the cheerleaders I knew will probably never leave high school, mentally.

From what I read about cheer leading in South Korea after the announcement of this drama, is that it's a sports on it's own and highly competitive. And since women sports barely ever get recognition in dramas, I'm looking forward to Sassy, Go Go for something in that regard.

Thanks, I'm certainly learning a lot from this thread. I guess I just need to pipe down and stow away my prejudice against cheerleaders for this drama haha.

Yeah, women's sports never get any attention anywhere, or any funding for that matter. In this case, though, there can be male cheerleaders, and it looks like their male coach was once part of the club, so we'll have to wait and see how much they play up the women-in-sports aspect.

oh and speaking of casting news, I heard that Yoon Doo-joon's one-act play about the Joseon king who falls for a high school girl, has offered the female lead role to Kim Seul-gi!

Also, Beak Ho was Kim Ji Suk's character's name in Likable or Not, which is the drama that introduced me to him. If you're gonna watch a daily, it's a great one to start with.

Oh no, I wasn't going to watch this, but Kim Ji-suk Oppa. *sigh* I haven't even seen Unkind Women yet. Someone tell me please, did he get the girl in that drama or not? I mean, I like Song Jae-rim well enough, but I can't watch Kim Ji-suk lose another woman again.

KJS's best role was in "INR2012" - where he played what is probably the best written/developed role for the rival/2nd love interest and he did it w/ such charm.

Did anyone else take one look at that picture of In Kyo Jin, and immediately thought: Lee Min Ho? It must be the sweater and the angle of the face lol.

I only recognize Kim Ji Suk and Lee Mi Do, but it's interesting how they've all worked with Kim Ji Suk before! Expecting fun on-screen and off-screen camaraderie then. :)
