2015 Korea Drama Awards

The 8th Korea Drama Festival is coming to a close this weekend in Jinju, and on Friday the 8th, it held its annual Korea Drama Awards. It’s not one of the big awards ceremonies of the year, but since it is one of few that focus on dramas, I’m always curious to see how the awards shake out.

…and then I see the nominees list and award recipients and I’m puzzled, because the picks seem so random. It’s a case where I don’t necessarily think the winners are undeserving, until I look at the people who were passed over and then it feels very strange.

Here, take a look:

WINNERS LIST

Daesang: Kim Soo-hyun (The Producers)
Best Drama: Misaeng
Best Scriptwriting: Jang Hyuk-rin (Yong-pal)
Best Director: Seo Soo-min, Pyo Min-soo (The Producers)
Top Excellence, Actor: Lee Jong-seok (Pinocchio)
Top Excellence, Actress: Kim Tae-hee (Yong-pal)
Excellence Award, Actor: Lee Joon (Heard It Through the Grapevine), Kim Dae-myung (Misaeng)
Excellence Award, Actress: Sooyoung (My Spring Days)
New Actor: Chanyeol (EXO Next Door)
New Actress: Im Ji-yeon (High Society)
Lifetime Achievement Award: Kim Young-ae
Hallyu Star Award: Kim Soo-hyun (Producers), Chanyeol (EXO Next Door)
Special Judges’ Award: Im Shi-wan (Misaeng)
KDA Award: Park Hae-jin (Bad Guys)
Hot Star Award: Seo Kang-joon (Hwajung)
Star of the Year Award: Kim So-hyun (Who Are You—School 2015)
Global Star Award: Sam Okyere (Warm and Cozy)
Drama OST Award: Jang Jane (Kill Me, Heal Me)

For instance, I’m happy to see Misaeng in the mix despite being a 2014 drama, and can’t argue with its Best Drama win… but then you give The Producers best directing over it? Especially when there was such a fuss over how most of Korea hated Producers’ experimental directing and the show scrambled to shut it down by replacing directors and turning it into a standard rom-com? And sure it’s great that Kim Dae-myung won an acting award for Misaeng, and I understand Im Shi-wan being nominated even if he didn’t win—but how do you neglect to nominate Lee Sung-min, who carried that whole show?

The awards chose to nominate actors for Daesang without renominating them for the top acting categories, which I can kind of understand (since the categories would just be doubled up with the same names)… but that leads to the quirk where if you lose out on Daesang, you also have no shot at another acting award. Which is how we have situations like Ji Sung (Kill Me, Heal Me) losing out on Daesang to Kim Soo-hyun (The Producers), and then not even getting an Top Excellence as consolation, which went to Lee Jong-seok. (I know Pinocchio technically ended in early January 2015, but it feels like it should have been part of last year’s mix.)

That hurts—what will it take to give Ji Sung an award already?—even though I do think Kim Soo-hyun was wonderful in The Producers, which was perhaps more deserving than the Daesang he won last year at this same ceremony, for You From Another Star. I much prefer the broadcast station system where the Daesang nomination pool is pulled from the Top Excellence nominees, which helps mitigate this scenario.

I’m annoyed on principle that no women were nominated in the Daesang category, although I will grudgingly admit that perhaps the actresses nominated for Top Excellence weren’t at the level of the Daesang nominees (Kim Soo-hyun, Ji Sung, Joo-won, Cha Seung-won, and Yoo Dong-geun). Top Excellence Actress nominees were Kim Hee-sun, Park Shin-hye, Jang Nara, Hwang Jung-eum, and the winner, Kim Tae-hee.

I don’t actually mind Kim Tae-hee winning for Yong-pal, but because of the nomination system, her co-star Joo-won missed out on an award because he was up for a Daesang rather than Top Excellence. That seems wrong to me, given that Joo-won really carried that show… and doubly wrong is Yong-pal winning best writing, because WTF. Did all the judges only watch the first three weeks? Or fail to watch the other nominated dramas? (Those were: I Remember You, Misaeng, Yoo-na’s Street, and Maids.)

I’m amused at the many random special awards tacked on as well, just to have extra awards to hand out that didn’t fit into the other categories. Tell me, how is a Special Judges’ Award different from the KDA Award, or the Hot Star Award, or the Star of the Year Award? I am full of the eyerolls.

But, clothes!

For all my grumbling, I can’t begrudge Kim Soo-hyun winning the Daesang, because for me he was the heart of The Producers, and without him I doubt I’d have been nearly as invested. I love that with all the accolades he’s racked up (as well as all that adoration and fanlove), he still gets teary-eyed to win an award.

Kim Tae-hee (Yong-pal) is so, so pretty. Incredibly tiny and incredibly pretty, almost distractingly so. I love this look for her—maybe it’s a little safe, but the detailed beading and the simple styling come together beautifully. And those shoes! I would steal them off her feet.

Doesn’t this wave-pose just scream “I’ve made it” as a newly minted Hallyu star? It’s been so nice to see Park Hae-jin experience such a sharp rise to fame after putting in a lot of years going under the radar. He was nominated for Top Excellence for Bad Guys, but took home the KDA Award, which I’m pretty sure the organizers just made up so he got something. Sure, why not?

In a similar pattern, Im Shi-wan was nominated for Top Excellence for Misaeng, which he did not win, but was given a Special Judges’ Award.

Kim Dae-myung! I’m happy that he was recognized for Misaeng (although really, what about Chief Oh?), and hope that opens the door for more leading roles for him.

New Actress went to Im Ji-yeon for High Society, which makes sense since she’s on a nice upward trajectory after making a mark with her debut film, Obsessed. I don’t have any strong feelings about her dress, which is okay. I guess. Yawn.

I would have loved for the New Actress Award to go to Jo Soo-hyang instead, though. I guess I see why they went for Im, but man, Jo Soo-hyang was the one who came out of nowhere and ripped up the town playing (I’m pretty sure) a devil-child in Who Are You—School 2015. Okay, fine, if not the actual spawn of Satan, then at least a vicious sociopath.

Jo Soo-hyang’s Who Are You—School 2015 co-star Kim So-hyun was given the Star of the Year Award. I don’t actually love her dress on its own, so much as I like the dreamy, princessy effect, spread around her like that. Kim So-hyun has had a lot of great red-carpet looks in the past, so if anything I’m looking forward to seeing what she pulls out for the year-end broadcaster awards.

I guess I’m gonna have to get with the times and check out more web series, like the super-popular EXO Next Door, where Chanyeol and his EXO bandmates played fictionalized versions of themselves. He took home a New Actor award.

I’m not sure I would like this dress on anyone else, but I do think Sooyoung is pulling it off. Or is it that she looks good despite the busy dress? Potayto, potahto? Maybe it’s the hair, which I find envy-inducing. She arrived on the arm of Oh Sang-jin (You From Another Star, Family Is Coming) and earned an Excellence Award for My Spring Days.

Do I like this red number on Wang Bit-na (Two Women’s Room, Still You), or do I just like that it’s a color other than black or white? Either way, she looks awesome and confident, and the fit is perfect.

Here’s singer Jang Jane, who picked up the OST Award for her track on the Kill Me, Heal Me soundtrack—a well-deserved award, because that song was moody and addictive, and super-effective in working with the emotional drama of that show. I’d call it an earworm, but I actually liked the song and didn’t mind it being stuck in my head. And now it’s back. It’ll be here for daaaays.

Lee Jong-seok is looking sharp and crisp in his three-piece suit, and took home an award for Pinocchio.

Lee Joon also took home an award for his role in Heard It Through the Grapevine, sharing the Top Excellence spotlight with Kim Dae-myung.

Lee Jung-jin (Temptation) is also looking sharp tonight, and presents an award with Park Jung-chul from the drama Scandal and the popular cable cooking show Home Cooking Teacher Baek.

Erm. I don’t love it, I don’t hate it. Here’s Ryu Hwa-young, whom I found charming and sharp with comic timing in Ex-Girlfriend Club, where she played sexy actress Lala.

It’s nice to see that non-Korean actors in the industry have a shot at some recognition, like this ceremony’s Global Star Award, which last year went to Otani Ryohei and this year goes to Sam Okyere for Warm and Cozy. I’d say his very limited role there (almost more like a cameo) hardly calls for an award, but perhaps it’s more of a cumulative recognition, since Sam’s been gaining visibility in the industry over the years, mostly in variety, with shows like Abnormal Summit, Island Village Teachers, and Law of the Jungle.

Seo Kang-joon, you are very, very pretty and have mesmerizing eyes, but you have yet to convince me you could act your way out of a paper bag. I suppose I can’t argue when the award he was given was named Hot Star (for Hwajung), though.

It’s not a red-carpet event without a bevy of white dresses! Of the bunch, Lee Tae-im (Law of the Jungle, Marry Me) has the best one, with its killer fit and the polished makeup look to go with it.

I’m meh about this option by Cao Lu, who is apparently a singer with a group apparently named Fiestar.

But it’s better than this plain number worn by actress Kwak Ji-min (Gu-am Heo Joon, My PS Partner), who in most of the pictures is struggling not to trip over her dress or looking like she might fall out of it at any moment. Not offensively bad, but like most looks at this event, kind of forgettable.

I'm surprise Misaeng didn't win more awards...so disappointed. I thought Im Shi Wan was so much better than Kim Soo Hyun this year. I could barely stand watching The Producers which was really boring.
Sorry, Kim Tae Hee was asleep in most of the episodes of Yong Pal. She wasn't that great when she woke up.
Almost didn't recognize Wang Bit Na. She lost so much weight that her neck bones are really sticking out and showing how skinny she has gotten. It doesn't look that attractive if you look like skin and bones.
Please give Ji Sung an award! Why does Kim Soo Hyun get so many awards? I don't think it was his best performance. I hated The Producers.

Why can't we all just be happy for the winners? Whether KSH, deserve it or not, is non of my business. But to me KTH does, sadly my Joo wonie didn't win. No amount of complain can change the result, the deed has already been done. So complain from now till next year, it won't still change.

In a just world, Jo Soo Hyang and Sung Jae should have won but I guess they are not popular enough.

Yong Pal winning for best scriptwriter was probably the biggest travesty in that award show.

I would have preferred Ji Sung to win but Kim Soo Hyun also gave a great performance, better than his drama deserved.

I think Kim Hee Sun should have won best actress. Aside from being a great performance, she basically carried that show. She didn't even have a real leading man. lol

This award winner list gave me so much headache. Poor Ji Sung. He did such a splendid acting in KMHM and wasnt recognised an ounce for it.

KMHM is being treated unfairly. It was such a good drama with such rich acting and it hot everyone talking for the second half of 2015. Everywhere I go, everyone is STILL talking about KMHM.

Fuck you Korean Jurys. You all need to reflect for this unfairness.

I adore Kim Soo-Hyun but he could do nothing in a drama but would still win an award. I think I would've been fine with him winning Top Excellent... but Daesang?!

The worst stuff is Yong-Pal winning awards... and Kim Tae-Hee!?! O.o Again I adore her and her acting has improved a lot. But she didn't do much in Yong-Pal. And the writing was horrendous!

The validity of these awards went way down for me as soon I saw that Yong-Pal won best scriptwriting. That's literally only possible if the judges watched the first 4 episodes. It's as much a train wreck as Doctor Stranger.

When will Ji Sung get the award that he so rightly deserves? Seriously, the man flawlessly pulled off 7 different characters (including a screaming, hormonal teen) and STILL can't get recognized for it? At least, he'll probably become as celebrated as Leonardo Di Caprio now.

Doesn't this show have a no attendence no award policy...well my theory is other people were set for the Daesung and New Actor award, hence the Hallyu awards, but no one else showed up.

Only way to explain Chanyeol winning over Sungjae because trust me when I saw he was not good in END. Sehunnie should have been nominated.

Still...sad for no love for KMHM or IRY

I love kim soo hyun a lot but I can't accept his winning daesang this year. It should be given to Ji sung. Yong pal didn't deserve any award but Joo won deserved top excellence for carrying the whole show. They shouldn't give him nomination for daesang.

For the best script it should have gone to "punch" or Misaeng" or "i Remember you"
"Yong-pal"- i don't know why people are admiring it and received much ratings. may be there wasn't strong fighter, one was a vampire, other one was political, so it got higher ratings. in my opinion.after first 4 episodes it was just nothing for me.

Despite being a fan of Kim soo hyun I think this years award should have went to ji sung without any doubt. He did a remarkable job and deserved the award for this year! I really don't understand these weird award shows in Korea, for some reason everything seems corrupted, whether it be shows like music bank, mcountdown, etc they all seem like whoever has the most $ or popularity will win... Not talent! if the award is being given yearly then what the person did in the year should be reviewed not what they did in the past. Past years may have been Kim so hyun's but this year was definitely Ji Sung's!

The Entertainment Big Boss : Is there anything left for drama category?

Jury : Yes, boss. I think we need to put "the best drama award" category.

The Entertainment Big Boss : Ah, yeah... They surely need to know that we appreciate their works. Which one will be the winner then?

Jury : def KDA 2015. They make us thrilled, frustrated, want to throw something but laughed at the same time. It's the best romcom thriller drama award show.

The Entertainment Big Boss : Got it! make sure they will attend the award ceremony.

Jury : Yesss boss!!!

I mean...Pinocchio and Healer ended at almost the same time and Healer has no nominations like wth? At least give Song Jina a freakin' award for being the best K-drama writer ever and JCW, too. At least.. Did they even watch all the shows? And Ji Sung...the one who played seven f***ing roles has no Daesang??! Kill me Heal me did the best this first half and nothing.. I know KSH partly the star of Producers but the show had Gong Hyo Jin, Cha Tae Hyun and even IU too? Why no awards?! And Kim Tae-hee and the Yong-pal stuffs, did they really...Feel like this was the Korean Popularity Award rather than a Drama award =))))

talent wise, Sungjae deserve it more for the rookie award, so the result is upsetting.
but since awards nowdays are all about ratings, it's understandable. Moreover, sungjae's got more love and acknowledgement from netizen, that's enough for me.

I like Kim Soohyun and I think he's a good/charismatic actor, but I've felt that he's always getting greatly rewarded for doing the bare minimum. Meaning he does well in his roles but he roles are super simple. I hope he takes on more complex roles in the future to prove to us that he's worth a Daesang. I didn't think he deserved one for YWCFTS either. I'm rooting for him though.

Secondly, Kim Raewon's the one being robbed this year.

My two cents with the issue whether KSH or Ji Sung deserved that award...well to me, Ji Sung had a harder job, and he did it well. Playing a role with 7 or more personalities...some actors would run the other way than take it!! I think Ji Sung did a great job. He deserves a best actor award already!!

I still can't believe Ji Sung didn't win any award. I hope this will not dishearten him. I hope Ji Sung knows that his effort did not go unnoticed because one can only imagine how difficult and demanding it must be to portray 7 personalities so convincingly and that his performance has touched people.

One word: Ugh. Korean drama awards are becoming more and more like a comedy show. Congratulations to all the winners anyway because its not their fault that they were given the award. But its so obvious that most won because of popularity rather than credibility which is sad for any actor out there, really.

KSH acting was so so in the Producer and LMH getting Lifetime Achivement? A TOTAL JOKE.

These were the worst award decisions I can think of.

How come "Punch" was totally overlooked?

Another Daesang award for Kim Soo-Yeon? What to do? I think that Cha Seung-Won (for Hwajung) or Yoo Dong-Gun (for This is Family) of Ji Sung (Kill Me Heal Me) were far more deserving of this award.

Kim Tae-Hee was the weakest part of Young-Pal. Such wooden acting, and she takes an award? I do think though, that all the list of nominees in that category were pretty weak. What's up with this selection? Kim A-Joong with her mesmerizing performance in Punch would have been a far better choice. But now we understand the news about "Kim Tae-Hee" politicking...

The screenplay for youngpal is another joke - Both Yoona Street and Misaeng were far more deserving of this award as was Punch which was totally overlooked.

Top Excellence Actor for Lee Jeong-Sook? He is improving as an actor and was very decent in Pinocchio, but not good enough outstanding for Top Excellence prize. Yoon Joon-Sung was far more deserving this award for "I Heard it through the Grapevine." What's up with their selection, going for "pretty face" rather than the good acting?

Best director - for "The Producers?" Don't make laugh or cry. Any of the other 4 nominees would have been a better choice.

Excellence award for Actress - I would have given to Kim Sa-Rang for My Love Eun-Dong

Best New Actor I would have given to Seo Young-Joo for "Snowy Road". The only "problem" with him is that he is not an idol with huge fan base like the guy who won - Chanyeol.

These should be remembered as the shameful awards.

I have never seen a complete list of winners I've disagreed with more.

I would watch a 50 episode drama staring Lee Sung-min, Ji Sung, Jo Soo-hyang, Kim So-hyun and others where all they did the entire 50 hours was stare at a wall, no talking, no acting just staring at a wall. Wait is that weird? Maybe I shouldn't have said that.

I personally finished School 2015 because of Kim So-hyun and Jo Soo-hyang.

I have an huge issue with the two Girls Generation, the Prime Minister one and this, the "awarded" one. They both aren't your usual idols and they can act, but they both chose projects apparently made for older actresses. Career women, ready to become mothers. And they both pulled the parts. Up to episode 8! Half a way through when the time comes to really prove you're fit for the part, i.e consummate the marriage or have a truly adult relationship or some kid call them "mom", some manager remembers they are Girls Generation and the whole character becomes a caricature.
