News bites: October 18, 2015

Lee Da-hae, Lee Kwang-soo

  • There’s a new Chinese-Korean drama coming up called Couple of the Century, and Lee Da-hae (Hotel King) has been selected to lead. She’ll play the complete package: an heiress to a fashion empire, an idol group member, and a successful actress. She’s lived a brilliant life and has never wanted for anything, but she has difficulty trusting others. The show will be a rom-com about a top Korean star (Lee) who is forced into a contract marriage but finds love along the way. The first TV drama project from Alibaba Pictures, Couple of the Century begins filming this month, airs on the web in December and on TV in China early next year. [Star News]
  • Lee Kwang-soo (It’s Okay It’s Love) will star in an SBS drama special called Puck! (No, that’s not a swear word said in a fobby accent.) Lee’s a guy who previously had no dreams or hopes (he’s a cold and pathetic loan shark with resentment in his heart), but everything changes once he makes the university’s ice hockey team. The screenplay won an award in April from the Korea Sports Council, which held a contest for sports-related scripts. It’s expected to give viewers strong laughs and emotions, and the casting sounds just about perfect. Filming on Puck! begins in early November. [Osen]

  • Jo In-sung, Jung Eun-chae

  • Jo In-sung (It’s Okay It’s Love) is said to be positively considering the lead in The King, the upcoming film from director Han Jae-rim (The Face Reader). In it, Jo would play a man who’s overcome an unhappy childhood to become a prosecutor, and Jung Eun-chae (Dr. Frost) has signed on to play his little sis in the movie. Cameras will begin rolling on The King before the end of the year. [News 1, Star News]
  • SNSD’s Sooyoung (My Spring Days) will play the visually-impaired star in KBS’s drama special Perfect Sense. With the special, the network aims to increase the young public’s awareness and understanding of people with disabilities, and Perfect Sense will air in early 2016. [Dong A]

  • Sooyoung, Seo Ji-hye, Yoon So-yi

  • Seo Ji-hye (Punch) and Yoon So-yi (Hidden Identity) have been cast in writer Kim Soo-hyun’s upcoming weekend drama, Yes, That’s How It Is. Kim’s known for working with the same actors again and again, but this will be her first time working with either of them. The show will take the place of I Have a Lover when it concludes next February on SBS. [Dong A]
  • He’s done it again; after drawing big ad bucks for OCN’s Bad Guys, Park Hae-jin is being credited for Cheese in the Trap’s popularity with international broadcasters and with domestic advertisers. The TV rights have already been snapped up in China and negotiations are currently underway in Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan. It’s said that the sale of the broadcast rights alone will cover the more than 5 million USD production budget, and it’s the first show for tvN for which profits have exceeded that of a successful broadcast show (a big achievement for the cable network). All of the ad spots airing before and after the drama have sold out, as well as all of the PPL opportunities. I hope the show can meet all the hype! It begins filming this month for a December release. [Star News]

  • Minhyuk, Chanyeol

  • The drama formerly titled Sweet Family will now be called Sweet, Savage Family, and BtoB’s Lee Minhyuk (A New Leaf) has been cast as the son of Jung Jun-ho and Moon Jung-hee. He’s a model student who grows up in a gangster household, and though dad Jung might seem like a formidable mob boss outside of the home, inside the house, he falls to the bottom of the importance scale, as his ever-nagging wife and two kids regard him with disdain. It’s described as a funny/sad drama from writer Sohn Keun-joo and PD Kang Dae-sun (Golden Rainbow, I Do I Do), and the Wed-Thurs show begins on MBC in November. [E Daily, Sports Chosun]
  • Chanyeol (of EXO) has been picked to lead the Chinese-Korean film titled So I Married an Anti-fan, which is based on a popular webtoon. He’ll play a top Korean star, and Yuan Shanshan’s been cast as a tabloid reporter opposite him. We’ll learn how the two become involved and fall in love (that must make Yuan the anti-fan) and there’s no info on a release date yet. [Star News]

Good to see Sooyoung acting again.......

but Chanyeol as the lead in a movie? ?? His acting is so bad, even in that silly Exo web drama the girl was doing all the work.

I don't mind Chanyeol. Just because it's a movie does not mean he has to be some stellar actor for it.

The problem is not that he isn't 'stellar', it's that he's utterly incompetent.

There are plenty of competent idol-actors out there but he is far from being one of them. His bandmate D.O. is far better.

Agreed, but I doubt the PDs care. It's basically catered towards EXO fans and there's nothing wrong with that

It's not true. MBC never said that they will drop it. It's just a rumor that some people loves to spread without any confirmation.

I'd wait for the official announcement.

So glad he's really getting recognized for his acting, and still wondering when will be able to watch his movie with Park Bo Young...

lol She made a chinese drama before, though it seemed to have dissapeared in the sea of other chinese drama made each year with out a ripple, the only thing I remember about it was the fuss made about her acting in it in chinese, something about her being the first korean to do so, though even that didnt pan out as Jang Nara did so before it was released in one of her chinese drama. If it pops up and get enough attention to get fan subs I may check it out as I still have nice memories of My Girl, this being a com/rom.

I think Emmy is talking about real Lee Da Hae. She's known as one of the richest 2nd generation woman Korea. Her father is a successful businessmen according to Chinese media report. She is a real chaebol daughter.

And Da-hae actually was offered to become a member of idol group (Jewelry) at the start of her career but she declined that offer. So seems she could live that in a drama now, hehe :D

I am immensely confident with Sooyoung playing a blind woman. That girl needs to teach acting lessons to many korean actresses. I once hated Sooyoung (during her Cyrano days - love the drama, hated her) but her acting proved solid in My Spring Days. How could an idol be so good in acting?! I think her talent is really acting and not singing. That is her true self. Lol. I am excited with this.

Agreed.

She should start planning her future to become actress. I wont say her acting is the best because they are lot of great actresses, but she is probably the best for idol turn to actress. Plus she is great in heavy character in which not many actress within her age is good. I hope she can do more film also after this.

Acting-wise, she blows every one of her bandmates out of the water, with incredible ease.

She's just such a natural at it, I wish she had more acting jobs. (I don't know what her stupid agency is thinking, letting more than a year go by between My Spring Days and this. Girl is lead role material!)

I read that apparently her father is also affected by blindness, and she donates alot to the charity which might be a big contributing factor as to why she took on this role.

The Time We Were Not In Love

I am so rooting for Sooyoung. I know she will do great as a blind woman so yeap, I am freakin excited !
Too bad that the special drama is airing in April though. I seriously want her in another drama before this one is airing. Or else, I may die.
On the good side, my first semester's exams will be over so it is like some kind of gift ? Haha.

Before, Bom Yi... I mean Sooyoung had a heart disorder now she's playing as a blind person. Seriously, can't you have a normal role aside from Cyrano? ???. Maybe she does best in this kind of roles.

(No, that’s not a swear word said in a fobby accent.) Bwahahah.

I guess everyone here are bashing on Chanyeol coz he got a lead role in a movie..I myself don't consider him as a good actor, but guys you're being too harsh on him :(

Lee Da-Hee really changed a lot and got even skinnier I liked her looks more during my girl era.

Can anyone recommend for me some very good Korean movies? I rarely watch them because they take forever to get subbed and I'm lazy to search for the good ones heheh

They touch serious topics like bullying in korean schools, homosexuality, society, hierarchy and friendship. They are an exploration the psychological side of human beings. They are serious movies.

Have fun. :)

Chanyeol is okay ... I didn't mind his acting in exo next door. there r lots of other awesome actors his age , but then sometimes to pull in a crowd u need someone with popularity. So that could b one reason for him being cast. But I like him and so I don't mind !!!
As for lee da hae I really miss " my girl" girl !!! I'm not against plastics but I dont like how it changed her !!! She could probably just put on some weight ...
