Daniel Henney up for Goodbye Mr. Black

Well it’s good to know that the new revenge drama Goodbye Mr. Black has found itself a new home at MBC and has withstood rounds of rumors that it would never make it on the air. It’s now being planned for a March broadcast, and has begun casting again for supporting characters. An offer is currently out to Daniel Henney (Runaway: Plan B) to join the cast, which I could honestly take or leave — he’s very pretty, but I find him so uninteresting as an actor. He does fit an obvious type though — worldly, handsome, successful — and casting him is pretty much a shorthand for that character type now.

Goodbye Mr. Black is the manhwa adaptation that’s loosely based on The Count of Monte Cristo, about the revenge of a man betrayed by his best friend and lover. Thankfully, the production didn’t lose any of its main actors during all of the broadcast scheduling hullabaloo. Lee Jin-wook (The Time I’ve Loved You) stars as the hero, a former naval officer who sets his sights on revenge when he’s framed for a crime and stabbed in the back by those closest to him.

Moon Chae-won (Good Doctor) is the cheerful young woman the hero fake-marries as part of his new cover identity, and she begins to change him and rebuild his faith in humanity. Kim Kang-woo (Missing Noir M) plays a chaebol who made his fortune in petroleum, and is now the CEO of a resort. And Song Jae-rim (Unkind Women) is a publisher and news editor who believes that the media has more power than the law.

Daniel Henney is being courted for the role of a financial adviser for an investment trust company, who also serves as the president of a non-government organization. He’s got good sense, he’s quick on the uptake, and he has a bright personality too. He’s always surrounded by women and knows just about every eligible bachelorette worth knowing, but remains single. He’ll be a benefactor to Moon Chae-won’s character, and he’s described as a dependable Daddy Long Legs type. Daddy Long Legs pretty much spells romantic doom in dramaland, but come on, were we really expecting anyone else to have a shot when she’s contract-marrying Lee Jin-wook?

Goodbye Mr. Black will air on Wednesdays and Thursdays in March on MBC.

Sounds a bit promising, I'll give it a dry but if the first 3 episodes don't match my taste I'll have to back out. I've to agree with you there gf, he's cute but I'm not just wrapped under his charms. Who knows, maybe this drama will change my view of Daniel Henney as an actor

I really like Daniel Henney! Obvious reasons are he's incredibly hot but more than that, I do enjoy his screen presence. I don't think he's as terrible as some think, I think he's someone who hasn't had a chance to really shine in a good role. I just hope his Korean has improved loads since MNIKSS!

I agree...I would rather end up with him than the other guy...LJW doesn't do anything for me at all...I've seen him in a few but only because someone I like was in the drama.

I like Daniel Henny...he exudes a 'nice guy' aura and is very likable. I think his acting is fine from what I saw in Kim Sam Soon. He does play english speaking in roles in korean dramas, so one would expect a different flow - but I think the acting was good.

I don't think he'll mess this one up too much, if Song Jae-rim's the actual second lead then he'll pretty much just be in the background.

I do hope the drama is decent.

I love love love MCW so much but I still can't get myself to watch this because of Lee Jin Wook!! He is so uninteresting and boring. If Daniel is uninteresting then LJW for me is 10x more!! He just do not have the added Xfactor or charisma that theother top actors such a SJS, Won Bin, KDW, KNG, etc. have or for young actors KSH, KWB, LMH etc. that even if they aren't the best actors out there they still have this charm or special something that made fans like them. The main reason their top stars now. But with LJW, I look at him and there is nothing. He looks dry. Even if he can act a special magical something is still needed to be a top star or an Alist atleast. Or to have a hit drama.

I have seen him in a couple of dramas and yes he can act well but there rally is no special something about hi. That make his shine on TV while watching. He is male lead in Nine and TTILY and I see nothing interesting about him at all.

I just hope this do not flop big time for MCW's sake. So good luck still I guess!!

@Krys11 and to other doubting "fans"

It's understandable that some would doubt LJW's talent & charm given some of his recent work. However, if you are truly MCW's fan, you would have some faith in her capabilities as a studious and serious actress.

MCW never goes into her projects without thought and study, which is why she has such a limited amount of projects per year. She has also proven her fantastic chemistry with every co-star so far, even when her love interest is a female (case in point, Painter of the Wind). So, before this drama comes out, it's really too early to "skip" this drama.

In addition, being quite a "snob" when it comes to dramas & acting charisma/talent, I think LJW can be a captivating lead. He just needs the right co-star & character. LJW has KKW, who is a fantastic actor, and MCW. If "fans" really doubt LJW's ability, at least have a bit of confidence in KKW and MCW to bring some "magical mojo" to this cast.

Don't forget, this cast was rejected by SBS. That kind of dismissal does something to bond a cast and writer together. Many MCW fans have a lot of hope and anticipation for this drama comeback. As MCW "fans," let's all be a bit more positive about this comeback.

I completely agree with you! I am a major fan of Moon Chae Won but can't bring myself to be even slightly interested in this drama because of my disinterest in Lee Jing Wook. With him, I feel zero appeal. I think your term 'He looks dry' is perfect to describe how I feel about him.

It's a real shame because I also like Song Jae Rim.

Are you really her fan? If you are really her fan, I don't think you'll say things like this, because it won't do any good thing for her drama. It'll just make it harder to watch and support the drama together for MCW and LJW fans.

You can say whatever you want as your personal opinion, no need to make it as the opinion of MCW fan.
I'm MCW fan and her fans whom I knew didn't say anything like this until now, and I'm sure they'll watch and support her drama no matter what, since we've been waiting for her CB since 2013.

This is a very weird and slightly creepy definition of "being a fan". I do not understand this "fans should be blind devotees of everything their idol is remotely associated with" mentality. (Although I realize it's become pretty common.) It's fandom, not a cult. We can love people as fans and still be critical consumers of entertainment.

If you want to say something regarding another actor, you don't need to mention it as an opinion of MCW fan, it's your personal opinion. That's all.
And I didn't said that fans need to "blind devotees of everything their idol is remotely associated with", They only have to avoid creating unnecessary hate. the drama didn't even air, it's too early to judge anyone, LJW have the chance to improve, and I hope MCW will improve too, because honestly the last project I liked her in was IM, I wasn't really fond of good doctor or love forecast.

0

I am a huge fan of hers, too, but the fact Lee Jin Wook is the leading actors....well unfortunately to say, I've lost such great anticipation for the drama.

The fact that he's a leading actor and to me, I don't believe he is leading actor material. Yes, to each their own. I wouldn't have mind it so much if he was second lead. I can't even bring myself to watch "The Time We Were In Love" even though I consider myself a Ha Ji Won fan because I found out Lee Jin Wook was the lead. Seems like I didn't miss much based on plenty of reviews from numerous people.

(sigh) I'm so frustrated with this disappointment. I was so excited with anticipation until Lee Jin Wook happened. WHYYYYY?! But it's just a drama... just a drama (so I remind myself).

I watched “The Time We Were In Love” and actually Lee Jin Wook was the best part in it. I think the problem with that drama was the plot. There were numerous changes of the script writers, it's no wonder that it got messed up, but that's hardly to blame on the actors. Besides I must say that though I really really like Ha Ji Won and adore her in past dramas (especially Empress Ki), her performance in there was the weakest up to date. Her acting was very stiff and she looked really uncomfortable in the romance scenes, that's why the chemistry between the lead couple was like zero. It's really a shame since I like both of them. Nevertheless I'm looking forward to this one!!

But she IS a MCW fan and she can express her opinion. How can you ask her to separate the two? That's like asking/telling her to cut herself in half. Hopefully we are all grown-ups here, and as such nothing anyone says will stop us from supporting whomever and whatever we like. I'm a fan of SJR and have seen a number of comments disparaging him but they do absolutely nothing to corrode my appreciation for him.

She didn't support MCW by her -ve comments, she only give people bad impression about MCW fans. You can see in the comments here, some people did really take this as MCW fans opinion. If she think it's too necessary to write such comment, at least she should avoid linking it to MCW fans. I don't want to see MCW and LJW fans fighting each other before the drama even start, it's not wise at all.

0

Donuts is not here in this particular space and time to "support" MCW but rather to opine that she doesn't care for the casting of LJW ...period. It's perfectly OK to express herself as a "major fan of MCW" because that is what she is...period. There is nothing, nothing at all, in her comment that in any way damages MCW or MCW fandom...period. She is NOT the one giving anybody a bad impression of MCW fans. And no one is "fighting" especially Donuts cuz she has even responded. This is a lively discussion, not a fight. ?

the first reply was to Donuts but after that I was taking in general about her and the other "fans", You don't even need to look for the reaction in other sites, you can see here some people are saying we're scary and annoying, why do you think they said that? and if it was lively discussion for you, for LJW fans it wasn't like that at all. and I can't blame them. in every article about this drama they start blaming LJW because he doesn't have much appeal and they can't give the drama any chance because of LJW, when we didn't see anything from him as black until now.

For example, when I say I am a fan of Moon Chae Won or anyone else, I don't expect to speak on behalf of her opinion. lol It is the person who thinks otherwise who should rethink things through when reading others opinion.

I, too, am a huge fan of hers but I don't have to like who she pairs up with either. ;)

anyway, i haven't seen any of LJW's works. i think he's super good looking but i've never wanted to watch anything he's in since i've never been interested in him or his female leads, UNTIL NOW.

so yeah, i get where you're coming from with the whole "no charisma" thing. i've watched some LJW clips and never felt anything for him but then again, maybe that's just cuz i've never liked anything he's done? whatevs, i'm willing to give this a shot for MCW and the reeeeeaaally good cast (i really like KKW btw!)

Moon Chae Won, I completely agree. I'm still debating on this because I am almost completely against her pairing just because not only was I excited that she signed on but I also loved the premises of the story.

I still MUCH MUCH prefer Kim Kang Woo to play Mr. Black or even better yet, my wishful thinking was Gong Yoo. Can you imagine?!

GOODBYE MR. BLACK
Starring Moon Chae Won, Gong Yoo, Kim Kang Woo, Song Jae Rim, and Daniel Henney.

But with Lee Jin Wook as the lead, you can just feel the intensity shift and unfortunately to say, it's not a good one. If you can imagine a balloon full of air but when you let go, it just flies through the air making fart noises. Too harsh? lol

I have confidence that the drama will still do well thanks to Moon Chae Won despite of my disappointment in the leading actor choice. There's really nothing I can do but suck it up or just wait until the drama is over and watch it then. I rarely stream dramas which a very few exceptions (including SIX FLYING DRAGONS and loving it). This WAS going to be one of those rarity times but I don't think I can do it.

Lee Jin Wook, yes, he just lacks onscreen presence. It doesn't matter how much screen time you give him, he just never really done much for me and I've given him plenty of chances. Oh well. Still wish him all the best.

As for Lee Min Ho, I still can't think of BOF without euuuuugh! But forget his dramas, have you seen Gangnam Blues?

0

Oh come on guys, if LJW isn't charismatic, who else is then? And just judging him by watching some clips is really too much. What I agree though is that I didn't watch some of his dramas because of the storyline or the female leads.

0

You took the word out of my mouth! All of my close friends really like/love LMH, and they don't get it when I said that I don't really feel anything with his acting.

Nope. They can't. ? (To be honest, I know they could if they want to but it doesn't look like they want to.) Perhaps his chemistry was off with his UW character's romantic interest, but I found it spot on with his brother and evil witch of a mother. I've seen him in a number of things and I don't see a repetitive pattern in his characters. I'm having a hard time getting through 2 Weeks cuz I'm watching it mainly for him and his character is such a heartless prick. That's how I base whether some one can act or not -- if I come away not recognizing other portrayed characters from other work then they have some skills. But skills are like knives, they need to be sharpened. Even supposedly great actors can fall flat like Brad Pitt's portrayal of Achilles in "Troy."

"I can only see 1-2 fans who post the same bitter comments over and over again spreading the hate from comment/post 1 till infinity just to make it look like everyone hates him.. That persistency though…"

And the same reason you see the same people that are easily defensive because others have opinions somewhat different from theirs and categorize those for not 'appropriately' representing particular actor/actress/idol fandom. lol

It baffles me when people bring that kind of talk/bring fandom to make any part of their point. I've always considered myself as a Moon Chae Won fan because I appreciate her versatility as an actress... I mainly just follow her dramas and not any of her websites/forums or even visited them. So would I even be considered as part of her 'fandom'... I'd wonder but I guess it doesn't/never really mattered to me. -_-

0

@AA You must've read some of the comments now attacking Chaewon's fandom saying we're scary, annoying, insensitive and such..who do you think is responsible for that? Am I proud that we're being labeled like that? Definitely NO! How bout you? Seems like you're even enjoying the attention you're getting right now.. I guess we're living on a different world/culture coz yes, I consider your posts "inappropriate" coz I was not raised like that.

@PatientlyWaitingForGMB

"You must’ve read some of the comments now attacking Chaewon’s fandom saying we’re scary, annoying, insensitive and such..who do you think is responsible for that?"

OMG. I repeat:

It baffles me when people bring that kind of talk/bring fandom to make any part of their point.

WOW! I should've taken myself out of this when people started mentioning 'fandoms'. lol There's no point in continuing any type of discussion in here when people are just going to be offended or defensive by others with opinions that doesn't exactly match theirs. So now not only am I not a good representative according to some fandom law, I am consideredinappropriate and living in a different world/culture (according to you, that is). Riiiiiiiiiiight....okay?

And may I ask how WERE you raised and what world/culture are you from that you think it is different from mine? No, you don't answer that. I am being sarcastic.

Sorry that I am not sorry for having an opinion and that I may not fall under the 'fandom' category because I am not 'properly representing'. Geez.

Oh and no, the 'attention' that you mention was not the intention to begin with... I was simply replying which apparently escalated very quickly.

And these are the kind of things you take with a grain of salt and you don't... take... it.... seriously. lol Which it appears some may be. EEK! O_O

@Lola, correction. I do NOT hate Lee Jin Wook; although, I do find him an average actor. I don't like the fact that he was casted as the LEAD ACTOR in this drama opposite Moon Chae Won. There's a difference.

And to clarify, what caught my attention in this drama initially was the fact that it is loosely based on the COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. Secondly, Moon Chae Won signed on which only made it that much more exciting!!!

Then Lee Jin Wook happened and it's meh...

Look, I've been fan for MCW for years and I know people who was her fan even before she started taking lead roles, no one of them have ever said she it too great to pair with anyone. In her fansites I don't even see her fans discussing things like this, when she choose any project she do that because the role or the script is interesting, this is what matters the most for her. and for us, her fans.
whether her co-star was an average actor, great actor or even bad actors, it won't effect her. She isn't an actress who can show good performance only if her co-star was good. And as you said, LJW isn't bad actor anyway, so what's the problem?

0

@Lola

Why does it seem like it bothers you that there are people (some who are Moon Chae Won fans, including me) that just do not agree with the lead actor casting?

Must there be a reason that you have to agree for you to come terms to the fact because in almost any Kdramas, there's always going to be people to disagree with the production including the casting. It is what you take of it and it's can drive anyone crazy if you think any more from it. I happen to wished they chose someone else as the lead actor instead. Simple as that. How far do we need to dissect my reason nor is there really a need for it without offending anyone or not properly representing a 'particular fandom'? lol Just take it for what it is and agree to disagree.

As for Moon Chae Won's fandom/forums/fansites, that's great! Good for them that they don't discuss these things openly but it doesn't mean it's no being discussed elsewhere. By all means, more power to them though. And for the record, MY OPINION does NOT at all imply or speak on behalf of Moon Chae Won or her fandom/fansite or what have you. Just in case that needs to be cleared. ;)

Also, I can't recall ever questioning Moon Chae Won's reasons for choosing her roles nor did I ever indicate that she needs a good co-star so I don't even know why this even in discussion. Lastly, I do NOT hate Lee Jin Wook. Sure, I believe he's an average actor but my disappointment lies in the fact that I wished they've chosen someone else with more versatility to play Mr Black and I admit, only a small part is that he will have to play opposite Moon Chae Won.

0

@Lola and that's wonderful you've been a fan of hers for all that while.... I mean, I've probably been a fan of hers since Brilliant Legacy/Painter of the Wind but who's really counting.

0

I really don't get the bashing of LJW and i am appalled at the way some ppl here criticize him here just so d actors they like will seem much more talented and charismatic. The fact is he is a decent actor, he may be evrybodys taste but at least he can act. Also, this post really is abt Daniel Henney's possible casting and not LJW or KKW.

Bravo Judy!!!!

This article is the 7th article about Goodbye Mr. Black Drama Casting written on Dramabeans, but since the first article "Lee Jin-wook, Moon Chae-won to headline revenge drama Goodbye Mr. Black" out,.. Most of comments are debate between Lee Jin Wook's "Savers and Haters", Mon Chae Woon's "Sisters", Song Jae Rim "Kickers" and of course Kim Kang Woo lovers who insist he deserve to be Mr. Black..
That's why i often skip read the article, and straight forwards to read the comments.. haha
Now, in this article, the title is about "Daniel Henney up for Goodbye Mr. Black" but there are only some people who read article commented about him... such a tragedy..

Next time, when another Mr. Black drama article out, i believe nothing gonna change, the "war" will start again and of course the field will full of blood.

I hope this drama will start soon and bring something that can be shocking and proving ...
something.

Immature Fans on Both Sides. The drama hasn't even started yet and there's already a fandom war going on in here.
To those self proclaimed MCW fans who hate LJW to the core. If your WHINING can change what's already been decided (cast confirmations) then continue what you're doing, but here's the thing just in case you don't know, your endless complains towards LJW's acting would not do any good to the drama. You're ruining not just LJW's image but also Chaewon's.
To the one who said that MCW fans are scary..what???!!!! Perhaps someone threatens you? Just kidding, we're friendly, promise! But you know, for every fandom, there's always one to two individuals who think/s differently than the rest, and that's inevitable.. As I saw some ljw fans who badmouth MCW as well, but I just ignore it..

Coming from CW's fan herself. It's irritating to see the same whining from those self proclaimed fans. Stop it already. It's getting so old.

Gosh! I so feel you, guys! It's only now that someone thinks MCW fans are scary. At least, that's what I think. I've been supporting CW for years now and I'm happy with her fandom. Everyone's been so mature when it comes to her projects. Like, okay, we don't have time to badmouth her co-stars 'coz we're busy supporting her and hoping for her projects' success. Well, everyone has his/her own right to express his/her feelings or opinions, it's just, you don't have to say harsh things towards the other actor while claiming that you are a FAN of MCW. Like, seriously? -_-

After read so many comments about this drama (on various sites), I can't help but to think that MCW fans are annoying. MCW must be so embarassed to have fans like this.
World is becoming more horrible because this kind of thing.
LJW should just stay on tvN and work with some not popular actress, because popular actress like MCW or HJW doesn't deserve to work with him.

Well, not to change the subject but ..... Hello Mr. Henney! What rock have I been under to not have run across you before, especially since you're on US tv? Oh, yeah, maybe cuz I rarely watch much tv. With the exception of a certain show on Comedy Central. Anyhow, GMB is certainly shaping up to be a veritable man bar. Excuse me I claim my stool! Yo, Bartender, I'd like a Moscow Mule please. And please turn on the tv and see if Criminal Minds is available from On Demand. Thank you!

Seriously, I am beginning to suspect that these self-proclaimed fans aren't really fans of MCW at all. I've not heard such negative comments on CW's fansites abt LJW - where it's supposedly more "free" to criticize.

i just notice that ljw getting more popular, more popular more hater, ljw getting more popular after working with ha jiwon, there's not much hate coment to him at his casting news in nine n three musketeers but after the news about him act with haji won he get soooooo much hate n now this drama.......fighting ljw

I must have missed the shows in which Lee Jin Wook performed badly because, having seen a lot, I think he's just great. You could see him working alone to try to keep that sinking ship Time We Whatever afloat and he did for a few episodes.
When I see LJW cast in a show, I know I will watch it for his trademark charm, humor, snark, intelligence and warmth. Oh, and he's really cute.

Ouch. To lose a leading role must be really galling. What's up with that? I hope other actors don't take it, as a show of solidarity to Lee Jin Wook.

But just in case...Mr. Henney looks hella hot!!!!

Has Daniel Henney learned Korean since Runaway Plan B? Because that really annoyed me that he would speak in English then the audience was suppose to assume that the Korean speaker somehow understood him perfectly and would respond in Korean then we would have to assume that Henney understood Korean to respond back to her. It was just odd. Or I'll be okay if his character is not suppose to know Korean and there's always a translator in the background or all the characters he deals with are conversing in limited Korean/English or something to that effect...

The plot of this drama sounds super boring. same shit. lead actor is so fucking boring too.

and now the side character is boring too.

moon chae won just do another drama.

and song jae rim just leave this crap and do a romcom in tvN as a lead.

THIS DRAMA IS ALREADY SMELLING OF FAILURE. I BET 10/10 it will fail super hard.

If the writers/direction is done right, this drama can still be a great success. Won't say it's a failure just yet... or at all!

Didn't you read that they are plenty of us who said that we, MCW's fans didn't put him down and it is just a few who happens to love her and just stating their own opinions which are not represent the fandom?

Funny that you ignore some comments here that defends. And you are no better than some of them who are putting him down, aren't you? If you are that childish and immature that a few personal opinions of others can affects your view on MCW.

There's a confusion about who is posting.

Can people simply just have an opinion and dislikes for the sake of having one rather than speaking 'on the behalf of a fandom' of any kind?

Seriously.

Why does it have to be black & white? I can like an actor or an actress but dislike the pairing(s). It happens.

This just happen to be one of them and yes, I am counting the eggs before it hatches because I am disappointed in the choice of lead actor. Does that mean I want this drama to fail? NO! Why would I want that to happen?

I am speaking only for me, as an example that I do want the drama & the cast to do well but my anticipation for this drama had decreased dramatically. Yes, it does suck that I wasn't as excited when I first heard Moon Chae Won signed on...But this is just my opinion and for the record, just because I am a Moon Chae Won fan and consider myself one, does not mean I speak on behalf of her fandom. lol

So to those who think otherwise, just take the opinion and disagree with it if you must. Don't need to bring 'fandom' into this. ;)

Wonder if it would make any difference if someone who wasn't even a fan of Moon Chae Won's voice their opinion and say that they're not happy about the pairing either or that fact that Lee Jin Wook signed into this film.

What then? lol

Regardless (and unfortunately to say), there's nothing we can do about the casting.

Wew so many hated in here. I wish my favorite actor never able act alongside MCW. Because shes a goddess who just can act with God of act not slave actor. I like MCW act in Shining Inheritance and The Princess Man, but i've just know that her fans was scarrier than JSY haters, It makes me chill. I'm not LJW or SJR and Danniel Henney fans. But I have watch some of they drama and movies. I'll never think they have bad acted. I like LJW in Nine and The ThreeMusketeer, I like SJR in Inspiring Generation and Two Weeks and also I like Danniel Henney in Spring Waltz more than the lead and also his few scene on Wolverine. I felt sorry towards they fans. They must be hurt because they favourite couldnt stand in same level with 'goddess MCW' they just slave who will ruin this drama.
I hope this drama will success because it could hurt our goddess pride.

Surely the one who are against the negative comments are more than just Lola and me (above). And those who have spoke up, they did it in a mature manners such as @Kgrl. How do you want the comment would be like for "completely against" what they do? what they do anyway? those who wrote negative opinions are expressing themselves. And how we are gonna completely against their opinions? by personal attack, insults, throwing tantrum and other kinds of counter attacks and ugly arguments? let's be mature here.

I completely agree with you. Daniel Henley is really really hot but I can't stand watching him act because he's so uninteresting. Such a shame but it seems to happen with some really gorgeous - too good to be real - actors. I find that actors that have aren't cookie cut to be the most interesting to watch.
