More princes join the mix for Bu Bu Jing Xin remake Moon Lovers

Hong Jong-hyun, Baekhyun

More casting updates for the Bu Bu Jing Xin remake! The Korean version is titled Moon Lovers and now reports that Hong Jong-hyun (Mama, Dating Agency Cyrano) and EXO idol Baekhyun are positively considering joining the fusion time-traveling period romance drama.

As previously announced, Lee Jun-ki (Scholar Who Walks the Night) and Kang Haneul (Misaeng) are in talks for leading roles. Both are reportedly still considering, which means nobody’s a final lock yet, though at least we can start to get a general feel for the cast based on who they’re courting. (Also, news reports had announced that Hwang Jung-eum was in contention to play the time-traveling main character, but her reps immediately quashed those rumors, stating that she was not doing the project.)

The original Chinese drama was centered around a modern woman who time-travels back to the Qing era, who then becomes entangled in romantic lovelines with several (all of the?) princes of the time while also trying not to alter the course of history. Moon Lovers puts the story in Goryeo era, with Lee Jun-ki up to play its fourth king, Gwangjong. Kang Haneul would take on his rival — or at least, one of them, since there are multiple suitors vying for her affections.

Hong Jong-hyun and Baekhyun are both being courted to play two princes; the details of their roles have not yet been given, but I’m sure we have some knowledgeable Bu Bu Jing Xin fans in the house who can speculate as to which roles they’ll be playing, right?

Moon Lovers will be directed by PD Kim Kyu-tae of hits like It’s Okay, It’s Love and That Winter, the Wind Blows. And despite the rocky history of pre-produced series in dramaland (versus the more frantic but preferred method of live-shooting), it seems that we’re about to see a renewed push for pre-production: Several big buzz projects are adopting the practice in the coming year, including the Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-gyo doctors-without-borders drama Descended From the Sun and Lee Young-ae’s historical biopic Saimdang. Now Moon Lovers is looking to film in advance of its airing as well. For the sake of everyone who works in the industry, I hope the pre-produced shows are successful and pave the way for more projects of the kind. ‘Cause as long as the live-shot shows outperform the filmed-in-advance ones, I don’t see things changing in the system.

Filming on Moon Lovers will commence in mid-February, with a goal of airing in the latter half of the year; a broadcaster has not yet been secured.

Female lead: Lee Min-jung, Han Hyo-joo.
But Ruo Xi is certainly Lee Min-jung for me.

PS: Thank God Hwang Jung-eum is not Ruo Xi.

On second thought, I think they will possibly cast KIM AH-JOONG because of her similar angles with Cecilia Liu in Bu Bu Jing Xin. There are major scenes where I cannot help but see their angle similarities. Kim Ah-joong is a possibility.

But Lee Min-jung makes a beautiful Ruo Xi.

Liu shi shi resembles Lee bo young a lot. When I first saw her, ( Liu shi shi) it shocked me , how much they look alike.
Wisj Lee bo young would take this role.

This sounds like a casting disaster

Hwang jung eum is not young enough, or pretty enough and her acting style is too dramatic to fill Liu shi shi's boots

So thank god for that!

lee jun ki is also a visual misfit. He is pretty but not classically handsome like jo in sung, go soo etc
He could play another prince but 4th prince is supposed to have a kingly commanding presence. (and yes lee jun ki fans i have seen arang and I liked him in it)

If they have to get an idol on board, someone like siwon, hyung shik would be better

I really want this to be good :o but it doesnt look promising

It's weird how people are always weirdly okay with idol casting if it's a guy but when it's a female idol the first comments on this site will be NOOOOOO OOOOOOOO how sexist and hypocritical.

I wish the idol was hyungsik. I still don't understand why all of EXO wants to get into acting but now I guess acting is just for anyone. If it's not DO than just pack them off to China to tour.

The casting is terrible so far and I want lee jun ki to run far far away.

@Ren, it's because EXO's agency knows that they can't be pretty boy band singers forever.

It seems like I'm the only one who wants Lee Jun Ki as 4th prince, he has crazy potential as an actor, from what i've seen so far (especially in things like King and Clown, Time Between Dog and Wolf, Two Weeks) the guy has range.

Also maybe it's because I never caught him in his flowerboy era, but I so don't see him "lady-like" pretty, even after watching the King and the Clown (where he totally rocked)

0

But you can say the same thing for any idol group - can't be in an idol group forever! So what, everyone gets a lead role just cuz?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

this role doesn't seem like a lead role, it seems to be more like a 3rd or 4th lead at best - not much screentime. And from what I've seen, he's got decent enough comic timing so I will admit he's not hopeless.

I agree that idols aren't entitled to acting careers even when they have no talent just because their idol careers are short. Drama viewers should not have to pay the price for the fact that Korean music industry careers have a short shelf life.

0

@Ren and pogo

I'm not saying that they should/should not or that they are entitled to it, I'm saying that this is how the Korean entertainment industry works, very little one can do about it. (I was pocking fun on it, actually.) On a serious note, though, who knows maybe he will do well, we shall see...

"It’s weird how people are always weirdly okay with idol casting if it’s a guy "

oh boy, not this old chestnut again. Please have a look at some casting posts where idols like Yunho, Taecyeon, L, Changmin or that N kid, among others, were mentioned.....it takes some truly creative interpretation of those comments, to come up with the idea that regular db commenters are "always weirdly okay" with any male idol being cast in things when they have been found to suck before.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree. While I admit I do criticize and get disappointed when female idols who can't act get good roles, I always notice that the threads for the female idols are way more negative than the ones for male idols even if said male idols are just as bad. People are extra vile when it comes to female idols tbh. There are also more personal attacks. I don't know why people need to say "well, she's not even that pretty" when looks don't have anything to do with acting ability.. No need to insult other aspects of the person if ability is the only thing in question.

idk if Baekhyun can act, though, so I'll reserve my judgments for now. Is he awful? I've never seen him in anything and I'm not into EXO (their fans kind of freak me out, so I mostly steer clear from boy groups in general).

I feel that this drama is going to end up a disaster too, the casting so far is disappointing to me except for Kang Hanuel. I feel that Lee Jun Ki should be cast as 14th instead and the 4th prince should go to someone like Jo In Sung, Ji Sung, or Joo Jin Mo. Baekhyun sounds fine to me for the 10th prince, I'm willing to close one eye as long as he have passable acting skills to pull off the cuteness. As for Hong Jong Hyun, I can't imagine him as any of the princes, and 13th is definitely a nono for him.

While I enjoyed Bu Bu Jing Xin tremendously, I don't mind the korean re-made. I do hope they really re-made with a new twist. The thing with Bu Bu Jing Xin that I don't like, the crying was too much - I find this is what turn me off a lot of chinese dramas. The angst and crying is overdose.
The Bu Bu Jing xin story is really interesting. I never really like the girl Ruo Xi. I like the princes a lot more and keep wishing they would just fall for another girl.
So I hope the korean version would have a stronger female lead. Park Bo Young?

I'm glad I find someone who doesn't fall head over heel in love with BB JX. I like that drama as a whole but as a love story no. The 8th Prince who is supposedly in love with the female lead turns out to be really in love with his wife instead. The 4th Prince who is supposed to be her one true love turns out to love power more than her.

And thanks God I finally find someone who isn't in love with Ruo Xi.

One of the reason why I try my best to stay away from historical dramas is because the male lead (if he happens to be King/Crown Prince/Prince) will have so many other women besides the female lead as his wives/consorts. If the female lead comes from the same era, I would l try to swallow my disappointment, but Ruo Xi is from the future therefore I find her acceptance of that practice is totally unacceptable.

A korean version of BBJX is a good news for me for I could hope to finally see a happy ending this time. I could also dream for a female lead that will make the contemporary women proud. Please don't be stingy with new twists show, I'm counting on you to do it.

Oh so if koreans cast 14 year olds to act like 20 year olds at times, it's possible they'd cast someone very young to play the main female, they can always make someone young look a bit older, but making someone old look younger always looks ridiculous. Oh well, it's not the type of drama that I'd really enjoy so I don't really care. Just thought I'd check out what the fuss was all about.

Based on their looks, I guess Lee Junki = 4th prince, Kang Haneul = 8th prince, and these young ones are 10th and 13th prince or 14th prince?

And they did manage to find a Korean king with 20+ sons & daughters, and at least 3 of these sons became kings for various periods of time.

Baekhyun is definitely 10th Prince. Definitely.

Hong Jong-hyun is... 13th or 14th. Certainly not 8th. 8th must have some hint of hot-ahjusshi vibe. It's Kevin Cheng all right. 8th should look like at-par-age-wise with 4th.

Kang Ha-neul is 13th or 14th too. Most likely he's 13th.

This sounds like a hot mess and a train wreck and it's not even the actors I'm concerned about but the writing and directing instead. I mean, it's aimed for Hallyu audiences whatwith the large budget, hype and media relases regarding it. So having idol actors is a given. (Even if the idea of watching Hong Jong-hyun for more than a minute has me running the other direction - he is just... Terrible)

I'm more concerned about the writing and the fact that remakes are almost always a fail in Korea. TTILY tells its own story and it's hardly been a few months since. Also, I might be the only one but I absolutely hate Kim Kyu-tae's directional style. For Kang Ha-neul's sake, I hope everything turns out well. PBY, KSE or LYB might be good on this. But I have a feeling they will cast an idol or popular actress. If this is the case, PBY will be the greatest choice, compared to idols.

Aside from castings, what more important is the storyline.

This is looking more and more like a train wreck in making. Kang Ha Neul is the only positive choice. Lee Jun Ki is a no no for the 4th Prince. You need someone who looks king material which Lee Jun Ki does not. If he has to take a role, he should do the crown prince. For the 4th Prince, how about Jo Jung Suk and Kim Moo Yul for the 8th Prince? KHN can be the 14th.

0

Required fields are marked *

Lee Jun Ki looks like Prince material, and he is too established to take the crown prince role, which is just a minor supporting character. JJS hasn't done, led or 2nd lead any sageuk drama before and neither has KMY, so the production may not consider them as suitable as the main lead for a big budget drama.

0

Required fields are marked *

We need good actors and someone who can play the 4th Prince, not an actor who has played a few saeguks. It is precisely after watching Lee Jun Ki in Arang, JG and SWWTN that I think he's not suitable to play the 4th Prince. The 4th Prince is aloof, expressionless, cold and cruel but he does have those heartbreaking moments. Lee Jun Ki will over dramatize everything. Plus, I won't be able to distinguish him from each of these saeguks because he has the same stock expressions. If you are his fan, you should wish he gets out of being typecast.

JJS is a more natural actor and he doesn't look too pretty. KMY is also good. But I think at the rate they are doing the casting, neither will want to be part of the wreck.

What a comment like saying LJG having same expressions in his sageuks. He is one of the best actors in terms of versatility. Only his role in GIJ didn't give him chances for another breakout performance due to the weak script. It was quite ordinary and one-dimensioned in my opinion. Other ones are unique in their own ways. All in all, he knows how to differentiate his roles well, and always gives justice to the characters. His acting never fails! For ones denying my opinion, just read that of Javabean's "His acting always reliably solid" which was mentioned in his previous casting news for this drama. That is actually how the viewers who watched entirely of his works felt.

Doing more sageuks doesn't mean being typecast. He chose them in fate as he was attracted to the characters and synopsis while many actors doing rom-coms or melos with similar characters just for the rating sake. Okay, let's leave his modern dramas alone, even his sageuks have different genre.

More strange is that the Night Scholar character is dragged, as if you haven't watched it yet. He showed his potential to act as an evil character there. That's enough for the audience to look forward to his brilliant portrayal of the 4th prince as well as a wicked mastermind king with an intense love to the female lead.

@LM, Agree that we need good actors & that both JJS & KMY are good actors. However, it is precisely because they have not led, 2nd led or even 3rd led in a sageuk drama before, that it is not so easy for them to land a first lead role in a big budget sageuk. It would be easier if they have a major hit or are wildly popular and have huge fan bases in China, Japan or overseas so that the drama can export for a high price, unfortunately, neither JJS or KMY are at that level. To be brutally frank, these 2 guys are not that popular nor comfortably established as a Big 3 leading actor. Worse, KMY had an army scandal, which will drag his career.

LJK is not just an actor who has played a few sageuks, in JB's own words "he’s so great in historical projects so I get the interest; even when the dramas themselves aren’t great, he’s always reliably solid in them (Joseon Gunman, Scholar Who Walks the Night)."

It is precisely after watching LJK in Arang, JG and SWWTN that I think he is suitable to play the 4th Prince. He can do playful mischievous Magistrate, angsty revengeful Gunman, aloof & cool Scholar-Vampire, so he should have no problem with the aloof, expressionless, cold and cruel 4th prince. He's also great at heartbreaking moments. It is from Arang that I realised that LJK can show restrained acting without over dramatizing everything. I don't have any problem distinguishing him from each of his sageuks simply because he manages to make them so different.

Since you think he has the same expressions, no matter whether he acts in sageuks or contemporary dramas, he will appear the same to you. And considering that his roles were that of ghost-seeing magistrate, hunted criminal daddy, disguised Japanese businessman, night walking Scholar-Vampire, I'm happy to say that he is so not being typecast.

Is it wrong that everything in this article briefly left my head when I scrolled down the page and got to that picture of Lee Jun-ki? Thanks, jb, you just made my morning a whole lot better!

Baekhyun out of all? I've seen his musical and I thought he was ok, but a musical is not a drama. Hey, at least its not Chanyeol.

Go Soo is doing the drama with Jin SY, and LJK has the acting ability to take on any role.

Would love a LJK - HHJ reunion.

Still hoping PARK MIN YOUNG as the female lead.... She can act really well with many guyz surround her. Remember Sungkyunkwan Scandal? Who's with me?

Haha. The only thing I remember the most from Sungkyunkwan Scandal was the bromance between Song Jong Ki - Yoo Ah In.

PMY might be a good choice too, but I will go for Park Bo Young more.

I wish budding actors were given more roles ... As opposed to popular idols. I like chanyeol and baekhyun but there r lot of other actors out there who could be given more opportunities. Maybe someone like ji soo or lee won geun. Any others you all can think of ??

I'm pretty sure Han Groo should be the main actress. I also think Han Groo should be the headliner in every drama.

But if she can't do it then Park Bo-Young would also do an excellent job.

Han Groo just got married, so may want to enjoy her wedded bliss first before jumping back into another drama?

Didn't know she got married! Congrats to her!

But either way, this wouldn't start filming until Mid-February anyways so pleeenty of time to enjoy being married until then!

Sigh...another idol casting. Hope he does not disappoint.

But I just gotta get this off my chest...why is the title so lame?

Right?? I mean, "Moon Lovers"? Really? "Scarlet Heart" is such a better title, although I realize that's not the actual translation of Bubu Jingxin.

Dream casting (not that it would ever happen) but Im Joo eun (just give her a leading role already! she's so underrated)
Kim Ji Won, Park Bo Young or Song Ha Yoon/Buyl.
Just please cast a actress, a good one! And maybe someone more age appropriate as well.

Baek for 10th! But I think it'll be easier to decide which prince the guys are playing after deciding on the female lead so we can visualise their dynamics.

The female lead is the most important, since most of the princes gravitate around her. Her casting is even more crucial compared with the princes.

Superfan of bbjx except, like someone mentioned, the too much crying.
If I was the director, i'd want to cast these people....

Rouxi:
Baek jinhee ,Oh yeon seo, Han hyo joo, Moon chae won, Lim jueun, Han groo, or Park boyong

4th prince:
Hyunbin, Go soo, Jo won...

13th prince:
Yoon siyoon

8th prince:
Joo insung, Kang dongwon, Go soo, Lee jinwook

Thank God Hwang Jung-eum turned it down. She is too old and ugly for this role. I hope she does not turn around and take it after all.

I'd love to see Yoon So-Hee as Rou-Xi. She is a wonderful actress, pretty, has sageuk experience, and an air of mystic around her.

i don't think Lee jun Ki kan manage being the 4th prince. He doesn't have that diabolical mastermind look that Nick had. I am going to cry if they change 8th prince into this secondmale lead who is good and proper thing. Because 8th prince was manipulative and definately not at all "good".
Han Hyo Joo or Kim Min jung are both not great actors lets be real. Park bo young would be perfect but i don't think she'll consider a sageuk.
I am scared but i will watch.

The main draw of the C-version is 4th prince's intense love for Ruoxi, and not his looks, and he is supposed to look controlled and poker face, not diabolical.

Knowing nothing about this drama, can a Lee Min Ho or a KSH,or even LJS be good for this??or are they too big for sharing the spotlight with so many other actors?

Lee MH and KSH may be too big to share the spotlight whilst LJS has no sageuk experience. In an interview, Nicky Wu said that the main leads must accept that they also have to be a bystander in many scenes because there are so many characters. But since the K version is shorter, they may simplify the story quite a bit.

Nope. Actually, Lee Joon Gi is the one who loves spotlight. If he accepts this, the plot may be adapted to the male-centered one.

It's not that LJK loves the spotlight, but rather that the spotlight, and the camera, loves him!

I'm so nervous about the casting since we need 6 good/great actors to play the 6 princes roles and a good/great young actress to play the female lead which is a crucial role for the drama (I would LOVE it if it's Lee Bo Young but she's older than the role in talks and thank God it's not Hwang Jung Eum: I loved her in Secret and KMHM and she's a good actress but not in this kind of a role plus she's not young enough for the role) and up till now I'm not that sure about all the 4 actors in talk for the drama: I have Lee Jun Ki ssi who I ADORE and can see him making a great job as the 4th prince/to be king, Kang haneul who I like and can see him doing well on his own but then I have the two other actors who I don't know at all so I think I have to keep faith in the director of It's Ok It's Love and That Winter The Wind Blow since I loved both those dramas (It's Ok It's Love more precisly) and hope and pray that Lee Jun Ki ssi make a great comeback to the dramaland since I can't wait to see him in my screen as soon as possible!!! :D
