Running Man: Episode 271

If you thought fourteen guests was a crowd, make room for a 100 vs. 100 battle. Prepare yourselves for stuntmen, pro wrestlers, judo athletes, more wrestlers, and a taekwondo team to take on our cast, who will need to call upon a bunch of celebrities to help them win the most epic nametag ripping mission you can imagine.

This week is more of an introduction to about half of those other 93 guests, and half of those guests show up without even knowing what they’ve gotten themselves into.

EPISODE 271. Broadcast on November 1, 2015.

Today’s 100 vs. 100 battle starts off with a long list of guests, including action and martial arts director Jung Doo-hong and the stuntmen of the Seoul Action School. We last saw him two years ago as Master Jung in the Running Avengers special.

Next up is the professional wrestling group, led by pro wrestler No Ji-shim, who teaches his rowdy boys a lesson. Then there’s the judo group with Olympic gold medalist Lee Won-hee, and the wrestling team’s entrance with Kim Ki-tae really makes Jong-kook look puny in comparison.

And finally, the taekwondo team K-Tigers, led by Taemi rounds out the guest list to an even hundred. In six hours’ time, our cast will face them in a nametag rippin’ mission. Cue collective complaints: “They fly in the air!” “You know how many of them there are?!”

To even things up, our cast will have 93 guests of their own to help them out. The catch? Our members have to invite the guests themselves. Cure more complaints: “We’re up against Olympic gold medalists!” Kwang-soo: “I’ll seriously invite my grandma so that they can’t do anything!”

But our cast will need to invite people whose names pop up with a photo in an internet search engine. And if someone leaves early, our cast must invite someone else to take their place. The good news? They’ll get a few chances throughout the day to cut down the 100 guest list number.

Immediately, the guys wonder if they can’t call up Kang Ho-dong (if only!) and realize that they don’t have the contact info of the most burly celebs out there. But they know a lot of idols, and those kids are speedy.

With six hours on the clock, everyone jumps on their phones. Jae-suk can’t get through to his first three choices, and Kwang-soo gets comedienne Lee Guk-joo on the phone. She’s busy today, and when he says she should’ve mentioned that sooner, she tells him, “Why do you think I’ll always come running at the drop of a hat?” HA.

Kwang-soo then calls “In-sung-ie hyung” aka Jo In-sung, who asks, “Who is this?” Aww. Before Kwang-soo can get a chance to identify himself, In-sung says he’s got the wrong number and hangs up. Bewildered, Kwang-soo explains that In-sung pulls this act sometimes, but he doesn’t know why. Mmhmm.

Haha calls up DJ DOC’s Lee Haneul, who upon hearing about the 100 vs. 100 battle, asks, “What kind of fight is it? What do I need to bring?” Hahahaha.

When Ji-hyo has actor buddy Lee Dong-wook on the line, she asks if he can’t be late to his Bubblegum press conference. And then the news headlines reveals that he totally mentioned this conversation to the media. LOL.

At actress Kim Ji-soo’s suspicions, Ji-hyo swears that there’s an epic nametag ripping game later, and tells her to bring anyone else at the agency that’s free today. HA—both Jae-suk and Suk-jin call up actor Im Hyung-joon, but thankfully he’s already on his way.

Kwang-soo gets hit with his second “Who is this?” when he calls UEE. Aw man, now it’s just sad. But he does explain what’s going on, saying that this is sort of a favor… and a sort of threat. In the end, she does agree to come.

Too bad UFC fighter Kim Dong-hyun is caught up in training in Busan, and Jae-suk gets yelled at for suggesting Park Soo-hong. While they keep calling, the athletes keep training.

A little later, Kwang-soo shares what sounds like a breakup text from In-sung: “I’m not your friend. Sorry if you got the wrong idea.” To that, Jae-suk says it should be enough that In-sung put in a good word for him for their next Noh Hee-hyung drama Dear My Friends.

That spurs a conversation about their invitation list and the guys get giddy about the femal idols. Haha says he invited Hyun Joo-yeob, but had to add some elaborate white lies to get him to come.

What’s interesting about this conversation is that not only are the cast members considering whether their invitees are strong, but also if they’re charismatic and entertaining onscreen. And then their first guest arrives: actor Im Hyung-joon.

The actor was on his way to the agency when Jae-suk called, but when he told them about the show, he was told to show up to the Running Man set. One could always use the exposure!

No one except Gary readily recognizes DJ Pumpkin, who’s part of AOMG. He’s well-known in the party circuit, and then Jae-suk asks if he can do first birthdays as well.

Brown Eyed Soul’s Young Jun arrives next, and Gary says that he used to do judo AND was the best fighter in school. Photographer Oh Joong-seok, whom Haha introduces as “the Gary of the photography world.”

Everyone bows their heads for the legends Choi Kyung-ho, boxing promoter and younger brother to the late boxing champion Choi Yo-sam, former world champion Chang Jung-koo, and former boxer now commentator Hwang Choong-jae.

Hwang Choong-jae admits to coming in a suit to promote his suit business, which heee. Then actors Kim Ki-bang, singer Lee Jung, and TV personality Sam Hammington arrive one after another.

All the guys flush pink when UEE arrives bearing coffee for everyone. Hyun Joo-yeob is right behind her, and UEE just stares blankly, trying to understand what’s going on. Look deathly afraid, she says she’s got another gig later and declares, “I’m gonna go!”

There’s also actor Heo Tae-hee, who’s free to stick around. Now that there are twenty guests here, the teams can engage in their first warm-up battle. Singer Lee Jung says that he just finished a hike when he saw a missed call from Haha. So he called back, and he heard the background noise and was led to think that a fight erupted.

Everyone is thankful that their guests have taken time out of their busy schedules to show up today. They feel most sorry to UEE, and Kwang-soo asks what they would’ve done if she hadn’t shown up.

She explains that she was getting her nails done when she received a call from an unknown number. Oh no, that’s strike three against Kwang-soo’s heart.

The 20 vs. 20 battle finally begins and Chang Jung-koo taps into his fierce competitive spirit as “The Korean Hawk.” Here, the teams will participate in a relay race of catching balls they’ve bounced off a glass wall into a bucket on top of their heads. If the Running Man Team wins, then the staff will cut down the total count of their opponents by ten.

When the game starts, Ji-hyo falls behind when the Heroes Team succeed one right after another. So the guys switch out with her to catch up, and it’s pure madness watching them figure out who should try next.

The Running Man Team is consistently behind by two people, and then Chang Jung-koo and No Ji-shim face off. Chang Jung-koo throws his ball… and totally misses. Twice. Whoops!

But the third time’s a charm for the former boxing world champion. Sam Hammington ties it up at 12:12, but then the Heroes Team start to pull ahead again. Haha keeps failing in his attempts, and soon only two players remain for the Heroes Team.

By the time UEE is up against the last Hero, it’s too late—the final player scoops up the win. Before Jae-suk can ask about how our guests felt about the game, a whole group of invitees arrive.

Let’s introduce them one by one: twin comedians Lee Sang-min and Lee Sang-ho who were invited by comedian Jung Tae-ho (who beams at how Jong-kook says he’ll tell his wife that filming will end late tonight), reggae musician Nuol who was invited with another musician San.

There’s former boxer Chi In-jin, and a rookie trot singer Ma Ah-sung whose hip-hop style suggests otherwise. He sings on demand, which is funny and lovely in of itself, and then when Jae-suk asks after the title, he deadpans, “Deep Affection.”

Apparently he wears his normal clothes when he sings onstage, and his stage name, if pronounced incorrectly, could lead to a linguistic misunderstanding (ma-sung means “evil” or “diabolical” in Korean).

Rainbow’s Go Woo-ri has appeared today, and actor Kim Kwang-kyu says that Jae-suk told him that he’d make him a permanent cast member. Turns out he misheard the location name, but will still dance on command.

As it happens, Kwang-soo had told actor Im Joo-hwan to just show up, afraid that he might not come otherwise. That certainly explains the blank expression on Joo-hwan’s face, and once they hear that he was free, he’s told to watch the explanation on TV.

Singer Wangbae also came because Haha mentioned that there was a fight. But he also knows Jong-kook because they were part of the same club in high school, and Wangbae says their teachers would tell the others NOT to grow up like Jong-kook. LOL.

Comedian Kim Soo-yong who despite his trademark dark circles, has worn the brightest sweater he’s got. Then a whole crew of people come walking through the door, and of them comedian Kim Joo-hyun confirms that he drove his wife’s car here to help Jong-kook out.

Sure Jong-kook sounded pleasant enough, but his underlying tone was basically to haul his ass over here. There’s songwriter DJ R2 who resembles actor Go Chang-seok. Rapper Super B had appeared on Show Me the Money 4, and Juvie Train shamelessly promotes his restaurant.

The stage name KingKong was given to him by an ex-girlfriend, and Zion Luz and Recto Luz are brothers who now get along because they’re earning money.

Comedians Kim Won-hyo and Yang Sang-wook came from a different event, and when the latter complains that there are too many guests here, Suk-jin says they need another fifty to arrive.

Actor Park Geun-shik is also Haha’s former roomie, and rapper Mino has yet to get his bearings. Musician M.Tyson is another one of Haha’s contacts, and looks eerily similar to Lee Jung.

Aw, fancy seeing you here Im Seul-ong! Despite being Ji-hyo’s friend, he says that she doesn’t even remember the last time he appeared on this show.

Jae-suk calls actor Shim Hyung-tak for showing up in full makeup, to which he says he was practicing for his play. And then he gets called out for promoting said play. Hehehe. He was surprised that Haha called too, since they’ve only met three times.

He’s grateful to be here, but then asks, “But what are we doing here?” Since we’ve got less than five minutes left of this episode, I’ve got a feeling that we won’t get to the nametag ripping today.

Actor Yoon Park meant to go shopping, only to lose his way. Turns out for the best, I guess! Having noticed an empty seat, Jae-suk tells the cast members to stand guard.

They’ve got 49 guests with them at present; Everyone changes out of their clothes, and the 40 vs. 40 battle begins… next week. Darn. I see some more familiar faces in next week’s previews, so one can only hope that there’s an epic episode to follow.

I was reallly not a fan of this episode. Like stated in the recap, it was pretty much just a parade of guests leading to some supposedly epic showdown, which we have to wait a week to watch. Having to sit through *another* hour of guest appearances doesn't sound like fun though, so I'm really not looking forward to the next episode.

There were so many better ways they could've gone about this... all I can say is that the final showdown better be amazing, and not some lame version of dodge ball or tug of war.

I've watched every single episode since the beginning, and there's many variations when it comes to name-tag ripping games. That, and there's been translation mistakes before, so nothing's ever guaranteed.

Just because I didn't like the episode doesn't mean you need to get sarcastic and rude.

I think this is an innovative game of Running man. The introduction of 100 guests can be dragging, but it's quite fun to see who is who and their response when they see the 100 opponent.

This special project is very ambitious, an unprecedented, massive battle of 100 vs 100 name tag ripping game. It is totally random, chaotic, messy and unpredictable, just like the good ol' days. This large scale project is something that I doubt even IC could pull it off.

Name tag ripping is the signatory game of Running Man, many guests came to the show hoping to play it with the members. This episode is like a dream come true to many.

Members

Yoo Jae Suk really deserves his top Nation’s MC status. He is able to give each and every guest attention while keeping track on the overall crowd. His smooth mc’ing made the 6 hours waiting time exciting and fun to watch. This episode is just playing to his strength and showcased his prowess in hosting an event impromptu.

The members also acted as secondary mcs, making the interviews more exciting. They add some titbits of the guests as they go along, offering remarks and helping them to loosen up.

Guests

Some of the guests may get grumpy for being tricked to come and the limited screen time available, but at the same time this episode is a major networking opportunity to them. Where else they could meet celebrities from so many diverse fields in the same place at the same time?

It is also possible we will see new faces in variety shows from the guests in this episode, diamonds in the rough. As many have pointed out, that Ma A Sung is being searched alot afterwards just for his less than a minute’s interview.
Even a minute of screen time in Running Man; means a free promotion to millions runners worldwide. I have no doubt certain guests were told by their respective companies to drop whatever schedule they have and just go to Running Man.

Ma Asung is gold...
I 'm an instant fan :p . When i saw him i thought "aww ,he looks cute and fluffy" then when he introduced himself as a trot singer i blinked a few times, then fell off my chair rolling with laughter. Al in the time span of one minute.

I think our Jae Sukie likes him too, judging from that bear hugg...and we all know if sukie likes someone..marvellous things happen.

Thanks gummi. The scale of Running Man keeps getting grander. I thought after that awesome maze episode they would slow down. But they just upped the ante.

Handling so many guests could have gone so wrong and it could have turned into a nightmare. But Yoo Jae Suk and all other members handled guests so properly. I thought I would get bored because of so many guests about whom I did not know even a single thing. But it was a breezy 1.5 hours!
Plus it is such an awesome opportunity for the minor celebrities to showcase themselves.

Running Man keeps getting better and better. Hope they break all rating records. Fighting!

This episode really show that RM member, particularly Jae Suk, able to care for many guest and keep the show entertaining even without mission. It's not boring at all. And I'm sure even though most of the guest only appear several minutes at most, they already get big publicity.

Omagaahd!! Talk about a cast of thousands!! So many peeps! The logistics must have been a nightmare.

Did anyone hear one guest ask another guest that he called him the day before to see if they were going to show up?
That tells me it wasn't as spontaneous as suggested.
But that's ok because we know RM has always been somewhat scripted.

I am glad they made it into 2 shows, they should do that more often.

Lots of fun you Running Guys!

I didn't see/hear that, but I do believe when it comes to guest invites, it's not scripted at all. I've a friend (in Korea) who's actually associated with RM.

I didn't recall any guests with that convo, but I do believe when it comes 'inviting friends/guests' mission in korean variety shows, not only RM, is 99% spontaneous. That's like the point of the mission, and one of K-Variety Show's trademark.

And in this eps, I laughed naturally when one of Haha's guest comes with his dog, so cutee >.<

It does claimed this eps is spontaneous

And Yoo Jae-suk was sorry to make the dog upset for not interviewing him (or was it 'her?'). I agree it was so cutee :) <3 (I also found cute the ballad singer Tim in Ep.272 who sang beautifully in his tank top and slipper :D *such a culture shock, kekeke)

While some may like the episode and some others may not, as a part of the former, I thoroughly enjoyed the episode. I ended up browsing about many of the guests I had never heard of before and thus, agree with Wizzard (#7) that a minute of screen time in Running Man means a free promotion to millions runners worldwide.

In the Dramafever subs around the 1:22:00 mark, Shim Hyung Tak talked to one of the dj's. The dj stated he'd texted Hyung Tak yesterday and "asked if you were coming". My Korean isn't good enough to verify if this is translated correctly. It does make me question why the show chose to include that scene when they clearly had more than enough footage. Nonetheless I don't think it takes anything away from the episode. It was super fun and one of the few times I re-watched an episode. As others have pointed out it also show-cased Yoo Jae Suk's amazing mc'ing skill how he deftly interviewed each guest.

0

That was another guest mentioning that he had just texted Shim Hyung Tak the previous day, not knowing they would meet today. He was making a joke that he had told him telepathically to accept the RM invite so they could meet in person. For some reason the telepathy part got left out of the translation.

Plus I found the last few scenes really awkward because there were clearly scenes with other guests in them (I specifically noticed Got7) but they weren't acknowledged or introduced yet - I'm sure they'll do it next episude but the editing is very awkward.

I was actually glad that the first part did not have too many Idols in it, i like seeing other music genres and artists.

Discovering someone like Ma Asung and seeing the boxing champ.
Even the Gold medalist and other sports team members seemed in awe of him.

Anyone notice that Ji Suk Jin actually knows a lot of people in martial arts? UFC fighters, boxers.. i noticed Kim Dong hyun called him "aaah hyung!" and whined when suk jin told him once he would not come to his games anymore after stungun tackled him. That episode with al the fighters too, they al greeted SJ first and he introduced them by name like he knew them very well.

Some very interesting friendships the members have.

Why does Jung Doo-hong look younger (and hotter) than he did during his last appearance? I fell in love again when he showed up.

This episode got me really excited for the next one. I was not bored or overwhelmed at all by parade of guests that most of the episode was. That was probably largely due to how well Yoo Jae-suk led the entire thing.

I was skeptical about this episode's concept when I saw the preview but when it airs, surprisingly, I loved it! It wasn't as disorganised as I thought it would be. So that's something pleasant, and they actually gives a deserving (30 secs or more) spotlight to every single guest, which was nice! We learnt more of the regulars' friends and broaden our knowledge on different other celebs that exist in the entertainment (or sport) world of which we would have never know of if not for this.

I secretly wish for In Sung to show up tho (albeit his mean joke on Kwang Soo) considering Ki Bang and Joo Hwan showed up! In Sung wouldn't be so mean right? Wish Kwang Soo could have invited Joong Ki as well, but I think he was busy shooting for drama abroad when this episode was filmed.

I don't think they mean talking about appearing here the day before. They just talking about messaging each other before to meet up when suddenly they meet on Running Man. That's why they say it's telepathy, because both of them never know they're both will come to RM.

I'm not sure how the final showdown of name tag ripping is going to happen. It's interesting to see the member's invited guests. Haha's guests are mainly reggae musicians or indie/not mainstream musicians. Gary, who has always said that he doesn't really hang out with celebrities, invited a bunch of boxers, hahaha. I'm a bit disappointed Jong Kook didn't invite Cha Tae Hyeon or Jang Hyuk! but I suppose Jang hyuk is busy with filming his drama.
Ji Hyo invited Lee Dong Wook and Im Seu Loong! all her Mandate of heaven castmates hahaha.
Runningman members should have invited Choi Min Soo hahaha that would be awesome.

I don't know if the show is on hold or not. But as it stands they are on two competing shows (since running man and 1n2d airs in the same time slot or similar time slots) from what I remember. So it would be a no go. Take Lee Sungi's appearances on running man, they are all after he left 1n2d.

Similarly is why whenever CTH calls jong kook on 1n2d he always does it with a sorta "don't talk you will get in trouble" joke.

Didn't mind all the guests (even tho only half-way there!) since YJS, not surprisingly, did such a masterful job as an MC - keeping things interesting.

Even the one game was silly fun.

Among the lesser known invites there were definite gems such as Ma Ah-sung and the grizzled boxer who still had that glint in his eyes

There were the regulars like Kim Kwang-kyu and Im Hyung-joon who are basically part of the "RM Family."

Jo In-sung has done that to KS before (a running joke) and while good buds, can see JIS avoiding "going out" when he doesn't have to do so.

Im Joo-hwan, otoh, is so laid-back (but competitive) and easy-going that it is totally in-character for him to be up for doing something when KS calls as long as he had free time.

Really like IJH (also b/c of his excellent performance in OMG) and really pulling for him to get to the next level in his career as the male lead.

UEE being so surprised (and carrying all that coffee) was also great (think she'll be avoiding KS's calls from now on - lol).

Wondered what all the hoopla was about UEE (as the break-out star from AS) - didn't think was anywhere close to the prettiest or funniest in the group, but have come to like her based on her variety appearances.

Have also liked Go Woo-ri from her variety appearances; don't have high hopes for her group Rainbow, which why she's probably better off pursuing her acting career.

These types of eps are also great cause we get to see more snippets about the RM members - whether it be who their friends are or things from their past.

Wangbae just confirmed the some of the things we already knew about Kookie - that despite his choir boy image presently, he was a bit of a trouble-maker back in HS.

Probably why Kookie and Ms. Mong get along so well - both were definitely the alpha types back in HS (Kookie being the "boss" and Ace being the "Queen Bee" who also beat up on her younger bro - lol).

Speaking of Kookie - YJS should have told him to call/invite YEH (but I guess YEH is a bit of a touchy subject for a joke right now).

And last but not least - the opposing 100 athletes were impressive w/ their skill set but also entertaining (esp. the professional wrestlers).

CLAP CLAP CLAP for YooJaeSuk. The best MC I've ever known. He was able to manage all the guests for being entertained very well and politely, not only that, with a lot sense of humor. He was able to lessen the awkwardness in every guest whom they have just met.

I love how InSung sarcastically supported his friend Kwangsoo hahaha. I wish he will be a real guest in the future episodes also the comeback of Joongki :-) :-)

RM fan here from Philippines!

I don't hate Jo In Sung but it's good that he didn't come. If he comes, he will receive all the spotlight and other guests may feel inferior. Actually it's already happened in 1N2D, the best friend special if i'm not wrong. He was focused so much that it can be called "Jo In Sung special".

If Jo In Sung comes to RM, he should come as main guest.

I loved this episode mostly thanks to Yoo Jaesuk MCing. Meeting all the guest was really fun. Rookie trot singer Ma Ah-sung stood out to me. It was surprisingly entertaining for an episode where only 1 game was played.

I loved this episode. It was surprisingly entertaining even though all they were doing was mainly sitting around and talking. Jaesuk is really a marvellous MC, he could find ways to talk to just about anybody he meets for the first time!

I was surprised though, that Ji Hyo didn't manage to invite many friends, seeing as most of the guests turned out to be invited by Haha and the rest. Perhaps they were going for male guests who could stand against the heroes?

what i dont get is, are they really holding people there for up to 5 hours (the first guests) without food or anything?
Wow, that's crazy!

Fun episode, that was different from anything we've seen so far on running man.

But i do wish that YJS wasn't the only one interviewing people. The rest are hardly there in the episode once he takes over the show
