Answer Me 1988: Episode 13

Today’s episode shows us a different side of the dads in this neighborhood, and the lengths they’ll go to for the ones they love. All the dads on this street are very different from one another—one is loud and never says what he means, another is always eager but rarely helpful, and the last only speaks when absolutely necessary. But we find out that there are some things that all dads have in common—namely, the way they want to be perceived by their families, no matter how far from the truth that image might be.

EPISODE 13: “Superman returns”

Deok-sun and Jung-hwan come out of the Lee Moon-se concert together, and Deok-sun is stopped by another boy who calls out her name eagerly and runs over. He’s a classmate from junior high, and he marvels at how pretty she’s become since they last saw each other.

The boy says he tried calling several times, and asks if he can call her now. Deok-sun looks over at Jung-hwan who’s standing idly by a few feet away, and nods to say that he can call. Jung-hwan is as cool as a cucumber, acting like he doesn’t care at all as Deok-sun tells him all about their junior high classmate who used to have a crush on her.

Jung-hwan leaves to go to the bathroom, where Crush Boy and his friend are standing at the urinals talking about Deok-sun and how she was his first love. The friend says she’s not THAT pretty, and Crush Boy says she’s the cute kind of pretty, and she’s still as pretty as ever.

Jung-hwan doesn’t like what either of them has to say, and oh-so-casually bumps into them on his way out, making them pee all over themselves. Pfft, doesn’t get much pettier than that.

Of course, in front of Deok-sun he’s back to being as prickly as ever, and complains when he comes back to find her pouting over a twisted ankle. He nags her for always finding some way to trip and fall, and then holds out his hand for her to hold. The way she smiles when he does that is so cute.

They hobble along to the bus stop arm-in-arm, and then when Jung-hwan leaves for a minute to call the parents, she gets up to throw something away, suddenly not hobbling at all. Heh.

On a morning in February 1989, Deok-sun’s family watches a TV quiz program while eating breakfast, and Dad says his wish is to see Deok-sun on a quiz show. She was eager to grant him any wish, but says that’s not one she thinks she can manage. Bora approves of her realistic assessment.

Bora tells her that the library is closed today and that she should study at Taek’s, but Deok-sun says he has an important match coming up and can’t be disturbed. Dad says that if Taek wins next week he’ll be a grand slam champion, and when he warns Deok-sun to leave Taek alone, she says she knows better than Dad. Yeah, isn’t she practically his manager by now?

Sun-woo seems a little perturbed when Mom sends him over to Taek’s with another side dish. Taek’s dad receives it happily and tells Sun-woo that he’ll come by and fix the water at their house, and again Sun-woo tries not to let it bother him.

Sun-woo is surprised to see Deok-sun studying in the living room, but she just says it’s the quietest house on the street. She already ate, but joins Taek’s dad for second breakfast. Dad hints for her to get Taek to eat because he’s been turning down every meal, and she says that she’s careful to tread lightly around Taek when he has a match coming up, because she feels like he might fall over the second you nudge him. Seriously. Can we talk about that?

She sees Dad’s silent pleading eyes and gets up to go try anyway, and on the way she has to chase Dong-ryong off like a guard dog, before he bombards Taek’s room with his latest toy.

She knocks carefully and Taek looks like he’s nursing a searing headache just as she walks in. He says no to food, but Deok-sun asks in her best mom voice whether he ate dinner or lunch yesterday, and what he thinks that means about eating breakfast today. He smiles and agrees that he should eat, and pats her on the head to thank her.

Jung-hwan’s dad gets caught trying to cheat at a friendly game of baduk with Deok-sun’s dad, who really does take his fraud investigation job at the bank very seriously any time they’re playing a game. Jung-hwan’s dad says excitedly that Jung-bong hasn’t moved from his desk today and might really be studying this time.

Jung-bong is, in fact, writing furiously at his desk and getting a hand cramp from his efforts… to write copies of the chain letter he received. Oh noes. He starts addressing them to all the other kids in the neighborhood, though he remembers Taek’s match and whites out his name, then whites out Bora’s name too. Yeah I’d be scared too.

Jung-hwan’s mom shares all the fishes she bought at the market with the other moms, and they wonder why if husbands are so quiet because they already started drinking. The dads are technically not drinking because they’re arguing about what to drink (Deok-sun’s dad refuses to open his precious bottle of ginseng liquor, which he’s saving for a special occasion), when a news report broadcasts a series of robberies.

Two seconds later, the moms are huddled together and shouting that there’s a thief, and everyone comes running out—dads with sticks and brooms, kids with necks craned. Everyone stands there swishing their weapons around, but the thief has already run off (if there even was one). They all check to see if there’s anyone missing, and Deok-sun says Taek’s inside his room.

They don’t see Taek’s dad though, and he comes out of Sun-woo’s house a moment later, saying that the water has been fixed. They tell him about the thief expecting some kind of response, but Taek’s dad says he heard and just continues on his way. He’s so unflappable that everyone gapes, and Jung-hwan’s mom wonders if he’s a bear, not a man.

With that, everyone dissipates. Jung-hwan stares longingly as Deok-sun goes back to Taek’s house, and Sun-woo and Bora make eye contact and sneak off for a date.

The other moms prod Sun-woo’s mom to marry Taek’s dad, but she balks at the assumption that there’s anything going on between them. The moms think Taek’s dad likes her, and they don’t see why they wouldn’t be happier together now that the kids are sufficiently grown.

Sun-woo’s mom swears that it’s not that kind of relationship, and besides, she can’t fathom hurting Sun-woo by remarrying anyone. Deok-sun’s mom sighs and relents, but after a moment, Jung-hwan’s mom says quietly, “What about your life?”

Jung-hwan’s mom knows it might be easy for her to say because she’s not in the same situation, and that kids are great, “But your life is just once too.” Damn, she always knows just the thing to say to make you cry. Both the other moms fight tears, and Jung-hwan’s mom sighs that Sun-woo’s mom is just too young is all, and it’s regrettable that someone so young should be pouring the rest of her life into her kids alone.

Taek’s dad picks the worst moment to come by to return a dish, and when he asks Sun-woo’s mom if she’s still coming to the hospital with him tomorrow, she gets really loud and over-explainy about how it’s his checkup after the surgery and someone should go with him, yunno, as a representative from the neighborhood. The other moms just try not to snicker too loud.

Bora asks if Sun-woo doesn’t like Taek’s dad, and he says that he likes ajusshi, but just doesn’t like that he’s close to Mom. Bora thinks it’s nice that they rely on each other, but can understand why he doesn’t like it, and says that’s his right.

He smiles at her and says she seems like an adult when she says stuff like that, and tries to sneak banmal in with her again. She tells him it’s never going to fly, so he pouts and calls her the overly formal “noonim” instead.

Deok-sun’s mom happens to be headed to the hospital tomorrow too, for a physical that Dad’s company is paying for. She admits that she’s worried about a lump under one of her breasts (ack!), but the others tell her not to worry unduly without knowing more. Jung-hwan’s mom offers to go with her if she’s scared, but she says that Dad took the day off to go with her.

Mom is so scared that she can’t sleep that night, and Dad has to nag her to stop worrying and get some rest. She makes him promise to tell her the truth if it’s a bad diagnosis, and he assures her that she’ll be fine. She’d better be!

The power goes out at Jung-hwan’s house, and Dad comes home to replace the fuse. He’s all proud of himself for saving the day, but Mom is unimpressed. She’s on edge because she’s worried about Deok-sun’s mom, but Dad reassures her that she’ll be fine.

At the hospital, it doesn’t look like good news. Deok-sun’s mom looks terrified as the doctor explains that they have to do a biopsy to know for sure what it is, and Dad keeps a brave face as he tells her that it’s just an exam and it’ll confirm that she’s fine. Once Mom heads out with the nurse though, Dad asks if it could be cancer, and the doctor admits that it does worry him, but he won’t know until the test is done.

At school, Deok-sun and her friend Ja-ok mix their lunches together to make bibimbap, and sigh that the side dishes are paltry without Mi-ok around. They miss her, but Mi-ok warned them not to come visit her in the hospital because her dad is scary, and they speculate that her dad might be a gangster or something. Why else would she be so adamant that they stay away, and never talk about him?

In the hospital, Mi-ok’s dad’s gruff voice and gold watch seem to support that theory, but we don’t get to see his face. She tries to get him to leave and go open up shop instead of hovering, though it doesn’t seem to work.

Bora turns down her friends’ invitation to dinner, and they guess that she’s got a new boyfriend. They pepper her with questions, and Bora is taken aback when Sun-woo arrives on campus to pick her up for their date.

Her friends ask who the kid is, and she answers a little too quickly that he’s just a neighbor kid, before he can say anything. Ouuuuch. To rub it in even further, her friends pat Sun-woo on the head like he’s five and tell him to ask noona to buy him a nice dinner.

Taek’s dad coaxes Taek to eat just one bowl of porridge for dinner, and Taek weakly agrees. He asks about dad’s trip to the hospital, feeling bad about not having gone with him. He apologizes, and Dad laughs and tells him to focus on his own work, and not to worry about Dad.

Bora apologizes repeatedly to Sun-woo, who pops open his cola and drinks it like it’s beer. He’s too angry to be coaxed out of his funk, so she finally yells at him to look at her on the count of three… and then kisses him across the table. That does the trick and he smiles despite himself, and sneaks in a little more banmal while he’s at it.

At Deok-sun’s house, Mom and Dad have returned from the hospital, though we don’t know what the results of Mom’s test were (or if they even know yet). The kids arrive home all at once, and Deok-sun and No-eul demand food. When Mom brings them stew with cold rice, they complain and ask for ramyun instead, which irks Dad.

And then Bora complains about Mom not washing her shirt yet, and Dad blows up at all of them to make their own damned rice and ramyun, and wash their own clothes from now on. Phew, I’m glad someone said it.

Tears spring to Mom’s eyes and she escapes to the kitchen, and Dad yells at the kids for being such brats to Mom: “Do you think she’ll be by your side for ten thousand years? Don’t you feel bad?! Treat her well while you have her! And grow up!” Aw crap, it’s cancer, isnt’ it?

Deok-sun and No-eul just grumble and assume that Mom and Dad had another fight and are getting mad at them for no reason. But Bora seems to sense that something’s not right. Dad catches Bora alone outside, and asks to speak to her privately.

He tells her about Mom, and says that they still don’t know the results of the biopsy. He thought she should know since she’s the eldest, and tells her not to tell her siblings. Dad tries to ask about other things going on, but Bora just cuts the conversation short and goes back inside, so Dad goes to have a drink alone, where he runs into Jung-hwan’s dad.

The other moms assure Deok-sun’s mom that everything will be okay. They’ll know the results of the biopsy by Saturday, and Mom tries her best to smile and not worry. That night, Deok-sun’s parents and Jung-hwan’s parents all meet in the yard on their way home, and Deok-sun’s dad is happy to hear that Jung-hwan’s mom got his wife out of the house. He swears that he’s not worried in the least, though when Jung-hwan’s dad brings up last night, he quickly changes the subject.

Jung-hwan’s mom asks quietly if she’s really going to be okay, but Dad sees that Mom is still within earshot and very loudly says that there’s absolutely nothing to worry about and the doctor said that lots of people get biopsies for what turns out to be nothing. Mom knows he’s saying it all for her benefit but smiles anyway.

It’s finally Saturday, and Taek packs to leave for his big match in Tokyo, and Dad sets the table. The other kids are on break from school, but Jung-hwan’s mom wants to iron Jung-hwna’s uniform anyway and calls Dad in when the iron is broken. She doesn’t trust him to fix it, but he insists that he can do it.

Dad asks Taek for the number to the hotel he’s staying at, so Taek unlocks a drawer to go get his notebook and Dad writes down the hotel and phone number. It’s curious that Taek keeps the drawer padlocked, but I guess his house is like the town hall.

Even Taek’s dad and his baduk teacher seem more on edge for this competition (Jung-hwan mentioned to his mom that he’s never won this one, and come in second place twice. Plus there’s the whole grand slam thing). He’s about to leave for the airport when he spots Deok-sun down the street, and happily stops to go say goodbye to her.

She zips up his jacket for him because it’s cold and tells him to bring back a present, and when he asks her what she wants, she says she was kidding and he should bring back any free souvenir they give him, like a keychain. He pats her on the head and heads off, and then turns back to ask, “Deok-sun-ah, is it okay if I lose?” She nods and smiles, and that reassures him so that he can leave with a smile on his face.

Deok-sun’s dad has to coax Mom to eat something, because she hasn’t eaten a thing all day and is just waiting for the hospital to call with the results. She looks frail and frightened, and Dad insists that he could tell from the doctor’s mannerisms that they have nothing to worry about.

Deok-sun and No-eul have no idea what’s going on, and spend the afternoon playing a Monopoly knock-off board game with Jung-bong and Dong-ryong. Mostly they spend the day getting mad that No-eul keeps winning, despite not knowing how to play the game. He’s so lucky that he keeps drawing the best chance cards too, like one that grants him a space trip to anywhere in the world.

Bora and Sun-woo walk home holding hands, and she disengages before they reach their street. She heads home early with the excuse that she has to study, and when Mom gets up to start dinner, Bora says she feels like jajangmyun and suggests ordering out. Aw. She mimes to Dad to ask if the hospital called, but he says not yet and smiles at her gratefully.

Jung-hwan’s mom comes in to check on her husband’s progress with the iron, and finds that he’s cut the electrical cord so many times it’s basically a stub. She yells at him for ruining it when they could’ve just taken it in to get repaired. Clearly he’s not quite as handy as he thinks he is.

Jung-bong asks Deok-sun what a good present would be for her friend Mi-ok, and Deok-sun says her family’s rich so she has everything she’d want. The only thing Mi-ok really wants is to be outside and not trapped in a hospital room, but even her friends can’t manage that because her dad is so scary.

Taek’s dad fixes the VCR over at Sun-woo’s house, and when he gets up to go home, Jin-ju hugs his legs and stands on his feet, like the most adorable daddy-daughter pair. Mom invites him to stay for dinner so that Jin-ju doesn’t cry.

Sun-woo is a little taken aback to come home to the domestic scene, especially when Taek’s dad and his mom are holding a package of seaweed together and break apart awkwardly, as if they were caught holding hands.

This time Taek’s dad does the over-explainy thing, about how he was over here fixing the VCR so that Jin-ju could watch her cartoons. Jin-ju remains in his lap the whole time and Taek’s dad feeds her, and Sun-woo asks if she likes ajusshi that much. She says yes. Well of course she does.

After dinner, No-eul and Deok-sun run back out, and things gets tense as Mom and Dad wait for the phone to ring. Upstairs, Jung-hwan’s mom blows up at her husband, and then finally explains that it’s not because of the iron, but because she’s worried about Deok-sun’s mom.

Downstairs, the phone finally rings and Mom answers it. Bora and Dad look terrified as they await her reaction, but then after a moment she sighs in relief and confirms that it’s nothing. Dad says “I told you so” about a million times, swearing how he was never once the slightest bit worried.

Jung-hwan’s parents come down to check on the results too, and are relieved to hear that she’s fine. They suggest a celebratory drink and Jung-hwan’s dad nudges Deok-sun’s dad to open the precious ginseng liquor again. Mom says he’ll never agree to that, but Jung-hwan’s dad hints at spilling a secret, and Deok-sun’s dad immediately caves.

Sun-woo’s mom says that someone she knows got robbed and stabbed during an assault, and both she and Sun-woo are amazed when Taek’s dad has no reaction. He insists in his flat, deadpan way that it’s a scary story, and just keeps eating chips.

But then suddenly, the news reports a plane crash on its way to Tokyo, and the anchor says that the full list of passengers who were aboard is still being compiled, but sources are quite sure that Choi Taek was on that flight. OHMYGOD. Nononononononono.

It takes a moment for the news to sink in, and Sun-woo and his mom leap to their feet in terror. Dad is frozen still for a second, and betrays no reaction as they ask if he has the number to Taek’s hotel. He remembers writing it down, and gets up to go to his house.

But when he gets to the table where he left the scrap of paper, he finds the ink all blurred out from spilled water. Sun-woo and Mom think to call the baduk training center for the number, but Dad remembers that Taek put the card back in his notebook before leaving.

Over at Jung-hwan’s house, his parents are squinting and crossing their eyes every which way to try and see the ginseng in the ginseng liquor, and Deok-sun’s dad has to point out the tiny sprig floating around in the giant jug. But then they see the news broadcast about the plane crash too, and as soon as they hear Taek’s name the whole neighborhood is running outside (only Jung-hwan and Deok-sun are conspicuously absent).

Dong-ryong’s dad is ahead of them, and turns them all back at Taek’s door. He says that Taek is fine after arriving on an earlier flight, and all is well, and Taek’s dad is speaking to him over the phone right now. Oh phew. You have to stop DOING THAT to me!

Everyone starts breathing again, and they ask if Taek’s dad is okay. Dong-ryong’s dad says he’s never seen anyone with a heart of steel like that before. Sun-woo and his mom stand by as Taek’s dad has a very calm, mundane conversation with Taek about the weather there and remembering to eat and carry an umbrella. The others return to their homes, and the dads marvel at how Taek’s dad didn’t even freak out a little, deciding that he really must be a bear.

Taek hangs up after talking with Dad, and is surprised when his baduk teacher shows him the news report about him probably being dead. Teacher says it’s a madhouse downstairs with reporters all asking if he’s dead or alive, and that an updated story should come out soon.

Taek confirms that he spoke to Dad, but says that Dad didn’t say anything about it—he sounded totally fine. He explains that his father isn’t the type to get all riled up about things. Teacher just gapes and asks if he’s joking, and says that he’s never seen Taek’s dad so riled up as he was today, and he thought he would go deaf.

Taek is still stunned when the phone rings again. This time it’s Sun-woo, who says he just needed to hear his voice to rest easy. Sun-woo asks what the hell he was doing not answering the phone earlier, and Taek asks when he called. Sun-woo says he’s been calling repeatedly, and that he’s never seen Taek’s dad this upset before, and that he was crying and everything was a mess. Sun-woo: “I thought your dad was Superman. Where did that superhuman strength come from?” Taek asks him repeatedly to explain, so he does and we see it in flashback from Sun-woo’s perspective.

After finding the unreadable paper on the table, Dad ran into Taek’s room looking for the notebook and found the drawer padlocked. He was so panicked and desperate that he just started yanking on the lock to pull it open with his bare hands, and was turning red and shaking all over. He used sheer brute force to break the lock off, cutting up his hand and bleeding in the process. But all he could think of was to find that notebook, and when he found it, his hands were shaking so badly that he couldn’t even flip through it.

Sun-woo took over and found the number and made the call because Dad was shaking so much he couldn’t do anything. Sun-woo called and called repeatedly, but Taek was in the shower and didn’t hear the phone ringing. Oof, the pain in Dad’s eyes. Sun-woo said no one was picking up, and Dad’s panic and frustration completely erupted, and he screamed and wailed, just making these incoherent noises as he slammed his hands on the table repeatedly.

Sun-woo called again, and finally Baduk Teacher had come into the room to drop off a blanket and answered the phone. He confirmed that Taek was in the shower, and that’s when Dad yanked the phone out of Sun-woo’s hands and screeeeeamed at the top of his lungs like a madman, “WHERE IS TAEKIE?! Where is Taekie right now?! Is T-t-taekie in the hotel room?? Is he in the hotel room?! YOU ARE SURE HE IS IN THE HOTEL ROOM?!”

Teacher didn’t know what was going on, but said he saw Taek go in and he’s definitely in there, and only then did Dad slump over in relief. That’s when they finally heard about the plane crash at the hotel, and Teacher ran out to deal with the press. Taek came out of the shower a minute later none the wiser, and had a pleasant conversation with Dad about the weather.

This time we see the conversation from Dad’s side, and Sun-woo and his mom are equally touched and amused at the stuff he ends up saying to Taek, after what madness just happened. Dad just adorably straightens his hair and belatedly tries to look cool.

Sun-woo tells Taek, “Be good to your dad. It really seemed like you are everything to your father. Sleep well! Oh, and it’s okay if you lose!” Taek’s eyes well up with tears as he sits in his hotel room thinking about Dad.

As Dad closes up shop, Deok-sun’s dad and Jung-hwan’s dad come invite him out for a drink. They’re amazed that he handled the crisis so calmly, and Taek’s dad totally acts like he remained perfectly calm the whole time. Jung-hwan’s dad calls him a real man and tattles on Deok-sun’s dad crying the other night.

Jung-hwan’s dad says they’re human too and dads should be able to cry, but Deok-sun’s dad is embarrassed to be outed for crying. It was the night after he told Bora about Mom’s cancer scare, and he’d burst into tears over how his wife had to meet a poor schlub like him and now face illness too.

Dad wails, “I can’t live without her! I can’t!” Aw. He then proceeds to try and convince himself that she’ll be fine then cry all over again, back and forth like a crazy person with two warring personalities. It’s only funny now, of course, since we know she’s fine.

Deok-sun’s dad scoffs at Jung-hwan’s dad for not being man enough to fix a little iron, and says that the only real man around here is Taek’s dad. They ask if Taek’s dad was always that calm as a young man, and he shares an adage from General Lee Soon-shin, about how a man ought to move and act only deliberately, and with weight. A second later, a woman at the next table over screams that there’s a mouse, and when we pan back over to the dads, Taek’s dad is standing on his chair, hee.

He swears up and down that he’s not afraid of the mouse, see, it’s just that he has this childhood trauma from being bitten once, by a rat the size of a dog. The dads crack up and tease him, and from the next tent over, Sun-woo and Bora peek in and laugh too.

Bora narrates, “When we were young, Superman lived at our house. He was a MacGyver who could fix anything. He was Jjanga who would appear anywhere he was needed and solve all problems. He was a hero among heroes, who never showed a sign of weakness. But it’s not until after childhood that I came to know, that it was just never discovered—that Superman was human too.”

We see Taek’s dad hammering in a new padlock as Jin-ju and her mom cheer him on, Jung-hwan’s dad offering to fix a blowdryer, and Deok-sun’s dad remaining stoic as his whole family cries in front of the TV. But then when he’s alone, Taek’s dad drops the hammer and clutches his hand in pain, Jung-hwan’s dad doesn’t know what in the hell to do to with a blowdryer, and Deok-sun’s dad wails like a baby while reading a novel alone in the kitchen.

Bora (voiceover): “We don’t know how many dirty, petty, sad, scary, or difficult worlds have passed Dad by. And I only now begin to realize—no matter how dirty, petty, sad, scary, or difficult, the reason he endured was because he had people to protect. He had a family. He had me. Because he had to live the world by the name Dad, and not another.”

A few mornings later, the big story on the front page is Taek’s big grand slam win. No-eul grabs the paper and asks Deok-sun what that new vase is next to the TV, and she says that she told Taek to bring her back anything, and he brought her back this ugly vase.

Mom asks her for it so she can put kimchi in it, but then suddenly No-eul screams at them to stop. He shoves the paper in Deok-sun’s face, and there’s Taek pictured with his winning trophy—that vase. Ha.

Jung-bong gets all dressed up and bravely goes to the hospital to give Mi-ok a letter, but he’s so frightened that he can’t manage to go inside. He spends the whole entire day just circling the hallway, and finally the nurse pities him so much that she offers to sneak the letter to Mi-ok.

Mi-ok beams when she hears that Jung-bong was outside all day, and she opens the letter to find a chance card from that Monopoly-ish game that he was playing. It’s a ticket for a space trip, so that she can go anywhere she wants to. That is so cute. She pretty much dies of happiness, even with four broken limbs.

COMMENTS

Well that was a doozy. Actually, I’d be madder about the show putting Taek in danger the exact same way that they did to Chilbongie in 1994, if it weren’t told in the story order that it was (with flashbacks and quick announcements that nobody was dead or dying). What saves a lot of this episode’s events from being just a bunch of scare tactics is that everything is told in a way to highlight the dads’ reactions to the events, and because they’re told via flashbacks, we can find out that people are okay and then focus on the emotional aspect from Dad’s perspective. Otherwise Taek’s scare would’ve honestly made me angry, when I’m already on edge all the time because of his headaches and his terrible health. This show is pretty nerve-racking, actually, and for a heartwarming drama about family, I find myself watching it like I’m expecting anyone to drop dead at any moment as if there were a killer on the loose. It’s just no good for anyone’s blood pressure.

But I do love the focus on the dads, because the moms are really the stars of this season, and we’ve seen less of the dads as individuals. It was worth the near-heart attack of almost losing Taek to see a different side of his father, who was already the most endearing of the dads and the one with the sweetest father-son relationship. There’s a new layer peeled back every time with him, like seeing his softer side (pink mittens and hair-ties), his dependable side (as oppa-ya), and now the fierce, scary Papa Bear side that would smash his way through steel. He’s so singularly devoted to his son that sometimes I fear he’ll break if Taek breaks (okay, I’d break if Taek breaks), but the way that love came through in his fear today was really moving. It seemed really important for Sun-woo to witness that too, because he’s grown up enough to think that he doesn’t need a father and feels very protective of his own family, but it’s increasingly difficult not to love Taek’s dad the more you get to know him. I hope it’s another step towards them becoming one big family.

What’s interesting about the dads’ story is that the focus is really on how fathers are vastly different in front of their loved ones, always choosing to appear strong and invincible in the face of anything no matter how unrealistic or unreasonable that is. It may be a frustrating way to live, but I’ve also never known a Korean dad to be any different—they may be nice or mean or funny or strict or cool or whatever, but they are the same in this one regard. I’d guess that the same is true for all dads, because there’s just an inherent expectation of strength and dependability that comes along with being a father, and that’s universal. It’s always nice to be reminded that they’re human though, and that they’re just as scared and worried about the future and clueless about fixing things as anyone, because no one is born with the knowledge and skill to fix a blowdryer, and your tear ducts don’t dry up just because you get married and have children.

Deok-sun’s dad and Jung-hwan’s dad (and Dong-ryong’s dad) were mostly played for comedy in this episode, but I still found it super cute when they ran out to the street with sticks to chase the burglar away, or when Deok-sun’s dad cried like a blubbering fool because he can’t fathom living without his wife. I like the experience of learning something new about our characters each time, and slowly forming a whole impression of them as people, not just as a parent or a child, but in all the ways we can see their relationships to other people. The dads are as different as people could be, but the poignancy is in how the name Dad is universal—it means something to these men to act a certain way in front of the their children or their wives, to be perceived as the person who is unchanging, brave, and resourceful. No one person can be all of those things all the time, but the beauty is that they try, no matter how often they might be foiled by their emotions, modern technology, or mice.

I love that Jin Joo is starting to feel attachment towards Taek's dad. They are just too cute! and when he was flailing around and climbing on top of the chair, being so scared of the mice, LOL it was such a great visual gag. Especially after quoting Lee Soon Shin and whatnot.

And oh boy, did Jung Bong clean up well when he went to visit Maggie. His gift was so very thoughtful as well. I had a smile as big as Maggie's. Jung Hwan should get some tips from hyung.

Last but not least, Taek's "It's okay if I lose, right?" really puts a pang in my heart, it shows how much pressure he's in. I can relate, and I desperately just want him to be healthy and happy. And the Fujitsu trophy, gosh they were going to use it as a kimchi pot. Luckily Noeul had some sense in him.

Also, there's something that I think need clarifying in the recap. During DS's breakfast scene with Taek's dad and he asked her to coax Taek to eat, GF recapped it as she was hesitant because "she feels like he might fall over the second you nudge him", but when I watched it I was under the impression that she meant if she bothered him, she's the one who might get in trouble. After all, she witnessed Taek told off the reporter in episode 9 and from that moment on she realised that Taek took his Baduk very seriously, and hence she adopted that gentle mom tone when she tried to get him to eat, and gave him space.

I don't know, Korean language often doesn't use subject, and it's confusing sometimes. Can someone please clarify?

The line in Korean: "대회때는 저도 잘 못건드리겠어요 건들면 톡하고 주글꺼 가태가지구" /apologies for my spelling lol

the first bit (the "when [he] has a competition [i] can't bother him") is clearly about taek, so the second part ("it seems like if [i] bother [him] [he'll] crumple") reads like its referring back to him..

korean DOES often leave out subjects, but at least in this case, there's nothing in the sentence that indicates that the topic of the sentence has switched from taek to deok-sun, so it makes more sense that she's still talking about taek the whole time

I'd known Taek was safe even before they showed Dad's panic, but damn his freak-out scene killed me. And Deok-sun's dad cry-out was so hilarious but still totally heartwrenching.

I liked the focus on the dads on this episode but I honestly felt deprived of the romantic development with regard to our triangle (please don't shoot me down on this because it's an important part of the story). Taek keeps saying he likes Deok-sun but he hasn't done the grand move yet. Jung-hwan is hot and cold in that he keeps dodging Deok-sun, but still takes on chances to go out with her alone. Deok-sun is still adorably sending Jung-hwan hints about her own attraction to him. And then what? I really need to get this explored now, and I hope the episode tonight does so. I love the family and neighbor interactions, but I need the romance too.

Yes I agree! I'm starting to feel as if the writing is over-focusing on some scenes now and cutting it from the romantic development. We're only 7 episodes away and we've seen more developments in Bora and Sun-woo's relationship than Deok-sun and Jung-hwan :(

this exactly, i feel you.

part of what makes 1988 special is it's attention to ALL relationships and not just the main OTP. but a line HAS to be drawn at some point and seriously, it needs to be sooner than later.

at this point, JH x DS loveline is SO underdeveloped i still find myself a bit confused about the authenticity of their feelings. i mean, it's cute but, what? lets not forget how DS basically did a 180 in a night and went for not caring for JH to chasing him lol. her thirst is real :) just like my thirst is for SOME DAMN ROMANCE between the main OTP.

taek or junghwan, i don't care at this point. all i know is that some (A LOT) of attention should be put into developing DK and her man's relationship from here on out. at this point, there's really an imbalanced and the romance has completely been overshadowed by the surrounding story-lines. lets equal out this equation, show.

And yet again, Answer Me 1988 makes me laugh, smile and cry. I was just talking with my colleagues two days ago that moms are revered. They have so much songs about them in so many languages that when you take your time to listen to them for a day you end up crying and calling your mother. Dads don't get the same treatment. How many songs about fathers are there? How many of us remember Fathers Day and call our fathers on that day( get them presents, etc. Most people are more likely to go with the sentiments of Mothers Day than Fathers Day. So the fact that this episode is all about Fathers, the sacrifices they make, how they try to appear strong and unmoved because of their family really gets to me especially because my dad's passed away for almost four years now. So thank you Answer Me 1988 for that. And thanks girlfriend for the recap. My Saturday morning started just right :).

I think Jungbong's gift to Mi-ok was very sweet. Such an aww-inducing moment that I was surprised.

It was a good episode about the dads, but the lack of JungHwan scenes was jarring to me. It reminds me of 1994 when the episode will be focused on Oppa-yah and we would only have Chilbongie for just few minutes in a whole episode. And vice -versa.

Taek's dad is lovely. I liked that we got to know the different sides of the dads in this episode.

I don't want to be seen as a horrible person but I almost want them to kill Taek off. I mean I knew from the beginning that mom's cancer scare would turn out to either be nothing or completely operable like in 97 and 94. It would also give us a chance to see our characters deal with tragedy first hand instead of as an old wound that's mostly healed again like in 97 and 94.

this.

only i don't WISH for someone to die but i THINK someone will as per 97 & 94. part of the reason why the two families' relationship (main family & husband's family) was that close was because they experienced great tragedy together. and seeing as how 88's neigborhood is like one big family, any tradegy from one family will surely affect everyone.

OR if we could get away without anyone dying, much better.

still waiting for Dongryong episode here. i seriously think he'd be the husband though. they kind of have the same manner of speaking.

"I almost want them to kill Taek off."

THIS.

WOW JUST WOW.

I love JH, and was squealing for him to be the hubby (come on, those bus scenes are designed to make us fangirls swoon and melt).

But after these episodes, some JH/DS shippers makes me SO EMBARRASSED. I'm going to declare myself neutral and stopping associating myself with the ship.

Isn't it unfair of us to stampede all over the place, holding big "MY SHIP IS THE MAIN OTP" signs? I mean I'm pretty sure JH/DS will marry, but isn't so disrespectful of us to be THIS aggressive? I mean some people aren't even watching this show for JH/DS. I felt so sorry for BR-SW shippers when JH/DS lover started called them boring & a waste of time on the Soompi forum. Again, I love JH/DS, but to think that BR/SW is taking time away from "main otp" is so ... immature. We also need to admit that JH isn't the only main character out there. I like that he bickers with DS and stuff, but let's be real here ... JH isn't even the best written character in this show. On an objective level, I like Jung Bong even more. DR lights up the screen whenever he appears.

And now this comment about killing off Taek just so "main otp" can start making out / having sex / fulfilling your fangirl fantasies.

This is a new low. It reeks of desperation.

Goodbye Jung-ship. The cruise was fun, but I'm going to watch from the shore starting from now, in case you all get too drunk and start puking all over the deck.

From reading the posts above, I think you're over-reading what Sajen meant.

The comment was "I almost want them to kill Taek off" in order to see how the characters deal with an immediate tragedy. That's pretty far off from "killing Taek off just so the "main otp" can start making out/having sex/fulfiling your fangirl fantasies." As you say, your own embarrassment from the other forums, is probably fuelling this over-reading. I wouldn't normally pitch except your comment was pretty harsh.

As much as it gives me a heart attack anytime the show infers something is wrong with Taek, I can understand what Sajen meant. A lot of the stories are about the past, and anything recent are more about small trials and tribulations. And this particular episode did feel circuitous as in, it didn't feel like anything major happened despite all the emotions.

However, differing from Sajen, I like that. I've always found that using the device of a sudden tragedy to bring characters together, feels really lazy for a writer. It's a harder challenge to depict growth and development when using more everyday, normal scenarios to show turning points decisions.

but it doesnt have to be Taek. if you want sudden tragedy, it can be anyone, but you guys keep chewing on Taek like you are fixed and dream about it every night. I tend to agree with dory somewhat. it is not nice even as a speculation. If I started to speculate that Jung-Hwan will have amnesia and disappear, would that be ok with you? so try to THINK a little before sounding insensitive and over-eager for someone to die.

Are you replying to me? I'm not sure who you mean by "you guys"? I said I'd rather they don't use the narrative device of killing anyone off, which I found lazy, so it is odd if you're including me in the "you guys".

However, speculating on killing any fictional character off is just an exercise in the imagination or writing a storyline, which doesn't even play in the world of "nice or not nice".

So your question on whether it's okay if we were to speculate on whether Jung Hwan had amnesia or disappeared -that's entirely fine with me. I'm definitely a little tired of the overused amnesia trope in Kdrama though. And we'd have to think about why something dramatic along those narrative decisions is really necessary, which I had said I preferred otherwise in the first place.

However, calling someone else "low" or desperate, kinda is not nice, which is why I replied to Dory. Your post, however, just reads like you haven't actually read my comment at all.

0

I was talking not to you specifically of course, but everyone who speculates about that

I think people tend to wonder whether some tragedy would befall Taek because of the way his character was portrayed in the earlier episodes. He seemed so sad, so tragic, frail and other worldly, with all the little signals of something going wrong that it appeared as if the writers were setting up some kind of sad event.

It was interesting what they did in this episode - with the scares of Taek dying and Doek Sun's mum having cancer which goes a little way in exploring Sajen's question.

I think it's unlikely they would kill Taek off now. The episode has showed that two immediate consequences: the neighbourhood freaks out, which is what they'd probably do if any of the kids were hurt, but it's even more heightened as Taek came into their lives as the little kid who'd already suffered trauma / loss of mother at a young age (in comparison to Sun Woo) so everyone's a little more protective of him. The ripple effect of that would almost be too much to handle for the writers - how can they deal with that fall out with the other characters with just this number of episodes?

The other consequence is that his father would go crazy again, which he already had done when his wife died. In terms of storytelling, it'd be unusual to do that twice to the same character, and I think if that happened to Taek's Dad, I don't think even the plot line of Sun Woo's Mum and her family could save him.

So again, it's highly unlikely the writers would go down this route. But who knows? They may have thought to do that originally, but realised they underestimated PBG's ability to win hearts. I'd be curious to know if they'd change direction based on fan reaction. Or maybe they'd just go ahead anyway, if the decision was to end the 80s with a sad turning point.

0

@redfox and dory, it seems like this heightened tension between ships is fueling your interpretation of these comments. You're essentially associating this 'anti-taek' fixation onto someone's comment that didn't even read to be about any hate in particular towards the character.
You have to understand sometimes drama watchers speculate about characters almost clinically because these are characters in a fictional story and it's curious how other characters react to plotlines going one way or another. I totally get that when you fall in love with a character you feel the same type of protective spirit the neighborhood feels over Taek but honestly I think Sajen mentioned Taek exactly because he's so universally loved by everyone and their mother. I don't think it was meant maliciously.

That being said, I know how upset I would have been if something were to happen to Jung Bong a few weeks back so perish the thought of anything ever happening to Taek.

Also, I'm not a fan of any characters dying on screen because I feel like it would change the tone from a mostly happy one about people enduring thought love (familial and otherwise) to something entirely too tragic and raw. Especially seeing the reaction of one father at even the thought of losing his son, I don't want to see the kind of drama this would become if we lost a character in a more concrete manner.

I will say though that the shipping thing is getting ridiculous. I'm glad I stay out of forums for this reason. I have my ship but my focus is enjoying what the story offers. Still, I can understand that frustration with making the main love triangle almost stagnant for the purpose of dragging it out till the last episode. It becomes distracting enough when there's a lack of movement there.

0

@Quinze: you are so wrong. I am not on any ship. if the speculations were aimed at someone else, I would react the same. but at this moment, the fixation some people seem to have is for it to be Taek and NOT anyone else.

@redfox

You may not be on any DS/Taek or DS/JH ship, but you certainly come across as a Taek-Shipper.

Otherwise, you'd not come out with fiery statements like the following in the comments for the next episode.

"damn all the speculators last recap, now the “I might die without her” sounds like a bad premonition.

Writer, seriously, if you do something to Taek, I will put a curse on all your future dramas. There will be fire bursting out of my mouth."

Or claiming that it's "not nice", or saying people are fixated because they're considering it in this thread. If people want to consider the narrative how they wish, then that's their right. And actually, people have also broadly considered what kind of tragedy, not just Taek, though I explained as well why Taek has been set up to look like a tragic character, if you actually follow the discussions. But clearly not.

It's funny how Taek's dad has the least lines in the drama yet he has the most development. He's such a devoted father to Taek and we also see that Taek is his world. I swear, the guy could probably slay an army to protect his son.

I am getting a little worried about the love triangle in this drama. It's like the writers are overcompensating for 1994's love triangle focus so they went the other extreme and made it too low key. We're two thirds into the drama and still flirting with people trying to make their feelings known. I just hope they have a battle plan laid out on how to tackle the elephant in the room. I, for one, am prepared to see the love triangle get kicked into overdrive.

Thanks for the recap GF! It's great reading your recaps because it's fun but in this case, it's fun and a life saver for us people who are too impatient to wait for subs. lol

okay, don't get me wrong. i love this show.

BUT CAN WE JUST TALK ABOUT HOW SLOW THE LOVE LINE IS PROGRESSING FOR DK AND JH?

gawd, at this point i'm pretty annoyed with JH and that's saying A LOT cuz i used to reeaaaally reeeeeeaaallly friggin adore him. even taek is starting to irk me. he's so fragile and such a big man child. it seriously gets ridiculous when he can't even manage to feed himself without having someone remind him to constantly eat or sleep without having someone tuck him in. WHY THE FUCK HE ALWAYS NEED TO BE CARED FOR? he needs to grow the hell up. to me, this show is rrrreeeaaally pushing it with him. i thought it was cute in the beginning (how he didn't know how to do little basic things, how he was so childish and naive) but honestly, it's gotten to the point that i'm just like, really? this is getting out of hand.

honestly, taek shouldn't like DK cuz he isn't ready to LIKE anyone. he's not friggin grown enough to understand the dynamics of a relationship. he doesn't need a gf, seems more like he needs a mother/maid/servant or some shit. i swear i'm so annoyed at this point lol.

PLUS SOMEONE, ANYONE, JUST KISS DS ALREADY I'M SO READY FOR THAT DAMN KISS. and i don't even care who at this point. i used to be all team JH x DS but with JH's woo is me antics these past few eps, i'm pretty much ready to jump ship lmao. i don't support her with taek (dear lord, i love the boy, i really do) but i do not want that kind of life for DS. i do not want her to have to take care of someone for the rest of her life wtf. plus honestly, i don't think she would be happy doing that long term. although taek irks the shit out of me, i've seen him shown some signs of consideration & act like a grown person once in a while (ie. waiting for DS outside the bathroom) so i know he's capable of being thoughtful.

i know he's more than JUST a helpless man child. he really, really, REALLY just needs to grow up. i think i've been so blinded by my love for taek and the dynamics he has with his friends & everyone else (being babied) that i was blinded by how problematic this man-child thing he has going on is. i'm just saying, if i had a brother like him, i'll kick the shit out of him and tell him to GROW UP lol.

anyway, sorry for the rant but seriously. can we get some heat & steamy action going on with the main OTP already? everytime DS is onscreen with either of the boys i'm jst like kiss her, kiss her, kiss her. i'm getting too thirsty for this kiss. it's not safe lol.

PS. maybe JH and DS weren't around when the taek news broke out cuz they were somewhere kissing? LMAO. I WISH.

I think Taek is a lot like his dad: internal and quiet and not demanding. We just see Taek through a more childish lens because he's surrounded by friends who place him in the kid role and he rolls with it.

He's got a really weird, isolating, time-intensive job that doesn't consider him to be a kid at all, so I can understand why he'd come off as naive. But he is very aware of DS, and I think minimal maturation in his character would suddenly vault him into a very grown-up place.

Seriously, I think Taek could go from neighborhood kid brother to extremely viable love interest in a single episode.

I totally agree. Taek is not childish or immature at all. He just lets them baby him since that was the way since they were young. And being forgetful to eat or do 'basic things' is NOT a sign of being a baby, serious adults who are deep into their profession WILL forget to eat.

In Ep7, Taek's fan club president is the Reporter Ms Park. Taek has mentioned that he can 'talk to her as they are close' if she oversteps and asks dad bothersome questions during his interview.

We are only watching this drama within this neighbourhood. Taek has a huge life beyond this place. He even loans people money ( hahaha)

As far as I can see, Taek is placing all his stones into place. He will swoop in for the end game soon. We are already at Ep14/20.

Spot on, Fetch.

He has poor motor skills and is a bit clueless with everyday things, but that's not really a maturity issue as he'd probably be like that all his life. Some people, who have highly specialised skills in one area, can be much slower in others. Like brilliant mathematicians who can't cook eggs etc.

His job is isolating, intense and pressurising. But in the real world, a lot of people work really long hours and when in the flow, often go without food or drink etc, so it's not abnormal. Or due to their specialised skills, their lives follow very weird regiments.

The show just contrasts that with the everyday lives of teenagers and the neighbourhood, which makes Taek look strange.

Also, it's interesting that because of the Kdrama structure, we tend to want characters to get involved romantically, get the action going! But that's nothing to do with maturity, really. The fact Taek might prioritise his work, friends etc beyond just jumping into grabbing the girl - is kinda mature.

1
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

If Taek came in whining about not knowing how to make dinner, this would be a different conversation, but Taek isn't acting like a child - he's being babied by his neighbors. He doesn't notice that he's not eating, it's his friends and family who see it and fuss over him. And he submits to it because he knows they love him.

On top of that, his frequent Baduk absences might have made it hard for him socially. It's hard to lead the neighborhood gang if you're never there. The way it's set up now, he is always included, even if that comes at the cost of having your ears covered when people swear. He is not a stupid guy, on some level it may have registered with him that this is the best way for him to stay knitted into the group.

But he is very sure he likes DS, and is looking out for her safety and giving her crazy-important gifts. He's trained to recognize opportunities, and we all may be surprised to one day see him recognize DS considering him in a different light, and he comes on strong and certain and very, very different from the childlike way he allows the others to view him.

Yes, Taek never actually whines or demands anything... except once he started having feelings for Doek Sun and became a wee bit clingy (or just wanted to feel she was giving him attention especially.)

I agree with your assessment of him wanting to continue to fit in with his old gang. He was the "baby" in the group, in the sense, he was the last to join and was the quietest, and probably hence, the meekest. Friendships like that are based on an accepted mutual understanding of each other's roles - someone is the naughty one, someone is the clever one etc, and they tend to stick. So that was his role, and he can't really change the dynamic. And to be fair, as he did lack having a mother to nurture him, it was probably nice to experience all his friends and neighbours trying to fill the gap.

I wish I could be confident he ends up the husband, as I also agree with you on his feelings for Doek Sun. The biggest hindrance I face is that the future husband's personality has that reserved sarcasm I can't quite see in Taek. I wish the writers would decide, that a husband like Taek being willing to be playful and let Doek Sun tease him with the crackers, or Jung Hwan's dad's silly playfulness, is more attractive than one that acts cool and stoic, and won't join in.

Fetch and Dramapanda- You have both put into words what I have been feeling while watching 1988. All of what you said makes sense.

I personally like that Taek has not yet and is not pressuring Daeksun to like him back. He seems to genuinely like her and is starting to make geniuine gestures of affection towards her (providing her with attention, praise, food, gifts). Taek also allows DS into his "inner world." He lets her in while he is trying to concentrate, and her presence actually seems to give him strength and encouragement. Even more touching (in my opinion) he asks her for permission to fail, and she grants it to him...and then he succeeds. He then IMMEDIATELY gives her his prize (the vase). He does all this without putting pressure on DS to like him in return. He does this because he cares for her. My heart. LUFFS. THIS. It seems that it takes a great deal of maturity to do these things.

As for his "baby-ness." Have you seen the gentleman that the character Taek has been modeled after? Bless his heart! He is a genius in Baduck...but like most extremely gifted geniuses in one aspect, he lacks in some other areas. It is not that he can not LEARN to do things, but more that his mind has been trained and taken up by other thoughts and ideas. It would be like trying to get a mechanic to give a speech in front of thousands of people. Or a politician to fix a car! They are very good at what they do, but expecting perfection outside of their training and gifts may make them uncomfortable, and the results could be unsavory. At least Taek is gentle and open to correction. He does act like he is trying, and over the course of the drama, he seems a little better in his interactions with, not only his friends, but with stress and interacting with other people.

No one really knows where they are leading all of us with the entire "who's the husband?" theme, but I have to say, they have really lain some great groundwork with these characters. I am always amazed how you might think that one character is so flat and doesn't have time to make a big personality maturation or development, and then BAM! The drama will carousel that character into the limelight, and by the end of that episode, you are rooting for them and understand completely why they have come to be who they are. That, my dear friends, is why I love this series. This drama series has such a great combination of spot-on acting and pitch perfect writing that it makes me absolutely delighted to see another episode has posted.

I don't know about you, but I am enjoying the ride. I hope that the writing and acting continue to delight and engage us all.

If not eating or sleeping properly means being like kid and not growing up at all then you haven't met a workaholic person yet ^^ He ain't naive see he smokes he is not kid he earns his own money and you forget about something once you separated from your mother you will come to know you became some useless punk in home specially for boys. Since he hasn't died in overseas markets ( though he fainted once) he needs that time to get used to living alone that's it ^^

Sorry...but it really irks me to hear that to smoke means someone is not naive. Smoking is really really bad, bad, bad for you and everyone around you. Period.

Sorry but smoking means someone is not kid ^^ My fault I should've used punctuation. Smoking is bad, being naive not such a bad thing I suppose depends on situation. Still I can't imagine an observant character such as him could possibly be called as naive. If it's about lending money there is other things to consider before assuming him as one, imo.

where i come from, there are kids that are 15 or 16 who already have a smoking habit, but they're still kids. just because someone smokes doesn't mean that they're "mature" or "grown up."

taek is brilliant, academically. we see this with his baduk abilty (a very strategic game), his ability to solve a rubki's cube, etc. but he can also be called naive because he lacks a lot of experiences, common sense, and basic knowledge, which we see when he struggles to pick up food with his chopsticks or open a pack of yogurt. he's observant, yeah, but i don't think being observant and being naive have to be mutually exclusive :/

maybe the writers are trolling us big time when it's actually Bora & Sunwoo as the main OTP and Dongryong is really the husband?

haahhahaha.

Thanks for the recap.

I happy dads arch this episode and what makes them crumbles especially someone so calm & collected as Taek's dad. They are so similar & I hope we didnt need to see Taek crumble like that. Altho his tendency to skip eating when he focusing on baduk start to worry me a bit too much.
But.... Im not happy the way they totally recycle Chilbong plot on Taek. Come on now... Why u have to do that?? I'll be so damn pissed if Taek ended up exactly as Chilbong..
And more development of DS/JH.. JH really should makes a move. I can see the clues and logic that he is the husband but he still does nothing. He even get alone time with DS. dont tell me they wanted Taek to confess first then JH continue moping around and makes him confess in the last episode. Pls... lets end this husband game now~

I really really loved that shot when Taekie turns back to ask Deok Sun that one question ( that I didn't know what about until I saw your lovely recap thank you ) and you actually used it for the Recap header pic! ♥♥♥

Hmmm Taekie has always seemed to be unsure of his dad's love for him? I wonder if it was because he grew up while his father was in an alcoholic phase. This episode when Sun woo told him about how his dad was so worried brought tears to my eyes, even though I could only guess what was being said...

I think Taek will not be opposed to his dad liking Sun woo's mum, like many of us have feared for the ENTIRE week. He is too kind for that right?

I agree that it is curious that he locked his drawer though. Maybe its a precaution because there have been many thief reports? Afterall, in Korea their bankbooks are rather strange. As long as you hold the seal with the book, ANYONE can cash out the savings account. It just doesn't make sense to me at all, no matter how many times I see that in the Korean dramas. Would anyone please explain to me why it is this way?

I have found myself to be on the Taektanic despite not wanting to at all. I just came to my senses after the Beach non-date and there I was. XD

I can't wait for tonight's episode! What on earth will happen after he confesses?! *bites nails*

So my mum recently found out that she has at least 2 early breast cancers on one boob. So I kinda wanted the storyline for Deok-sun's mum to actually have breast cancer, to know what it might be like and how emotions are conveyed and the experiences are cause I feel like me and my dad (the only people that know) seem pretty nonchalant with Mum's situation. (We're like its okay mum, its just this thing, don't get depress, don't worry, move on with life). So we treat her the same like always, screaming and getting irritated at everything. (I think its also because I don't dwell or be hang up on something, just move on with life). Relevant to the recap: Dad is so quiet on this situation with no opinions or obvious care for mum. So I have no idea what he's thoughts are.

Anyways this post is kinda irrelevant to this recap, just wanted to say something cause mum doesn't want anyone to know yet and I haven't told anyone yet until she is comfortable.

Overall I'm just saying I have no idea how I'm suppose to act.

I don't think there's a right way to act but i think the best way would be to be supportive without being overbearing and act normal, without the screaming and getting irritated at her because it might be the norm but it might be affecting her mental health and right now she just needs you to be there for her.
2 months ago my dad collapsed when he travelled to his home country to see his mum,he needs heart surgery and was basically stuck in the hospital for weeks because his blood pressure was too low and he couldn't travel back home because he can't board a plane because of the pressure. The country his in can't do the surgery and he was told he has to go to India. So when we got the news,my sis went to default crying and worrying and i went in my default mode of shock, things hit me like 2 days later,i didn't cry, panicked for a bit, prayed and somehow the days have passed, and i go days without thinking about it.ofcourse it didn't help when my dad kept going on about his death, preparing a will, and asking us to his house for sale and divide the money among the kids.i felt angry with him honestly but now though he hasn't been cleared to travel he sounds cheerful over the phone, i believe he'll be fine, he's surgery will be a success and your mum will be fine too.
Worrying doesn't help, because there's nothing i can change.I leave my worries to God and that it, whatever happens we will be fine.

Firstly I am so sorry to hear about your mum...

I myself had a cancer scare before, and I can tell you it is quite terrifying, especially making you wonder how many days you have left. Also will keep wondering about how I have spent my life, and since you mum has you and your sis she will be most worried about how you will fare if the worst was to happen.

I get trying to pretend that everything is fine and nothing should change, but at this point of time I do feel extra care and concern will go a long way. Especially to not let her feel extra stress about situations because that can be bad. It is good news since it is early detection.

I hope you will be able to find the strength to offer your mum solace and love no matter what the situation will be.

Really sorry to hear about your mom...but I've always gotten into this default of: if she passes her away soon, will I regret acting like this (screaming and getting irritated over everything)? My mom lives very far away from me, so I guess it's easier for me to "control" myself over the period of time when I do get to be with my mom. My sister has that kind of relationship with my mom, where she'll yell and stuff to her. My mom always tells me how much that actually hurts her. I don't know about your situation of course, but I wouldn't want my mom to feel hurt by me when she's already facing something big such as cancer.

I'm really sorry to hear about your mum. I kind of went through something similar too in my family too.

Basically, I think parents get quiet when they're suffering or scared, because they don't think it's fair to burden the kids with their fear. Because if they can't show they can hold it together, how can they protect you all? Parents are human too - as much as you have no idea you're supposed to act, they probably have no idea how to act too, especially with you.

I think it's great you are trying to reassure your mum that nothing's wrong and life goes on. But thing is, your mum's diagnosis has come through with confirmation of early breast cancer. The good news is that when caught early, she can have treatment and be fully cured to live a normal life. BUT - the process of going through all this is hard for the patient too. Having breast cancer, early or not - wears the body and the mind. So she can feel more exhausted, stressed, worried and scared. Your dad probably worries about how she is too, as well as worrying about ideas of life without her.

So without making a big deal of it, if you can, just scream or or be irritated a little less, be more patient, and see also if you can help around the house a bit more. These little gestures mean a lot, as mostly, it reassures your parents that you care and are finding little positive ways to carry on.

OMG OMG OMG!
I didn't notice that DS and JH were missing from that scene when I watch this ep raw. I really really hope that there wil be something good about this, maybe secret kissing, lmao.
WHY do they try to let us think that Taek is another Chilbong and JH the so-easy-to-guess husband??? There is no way they are going to make this Answer Me 1994 version 2. I believe they are just playing with our feelings and bang! everything turns upside down. Taek is end game.

I ship Deok Sun and Taek so much *Q* and it aches my heart that there's a great possibility that he would be Chilbonged in the end :c. Anyway, I am amazed by how Bo Gum can pull off the innocent character of Taek which is a complete 180 from the psychotic lawyer character of Min from Hello Monster. I never thought I could fall this hard for Park Bo Gum huhu he's such an adorable, handsome, and talented guy <3

i love how we get to see so many stories within this dramam but i am getting a little worried because our main love story seems to be getting pushed back a whole lot. we're lucky to see one or two interactions between ds and jh or taek. they need to quit playing and give them more scenes.

it's ridiculous that with the length that each episode they still cant manage to fit in more interactions with our leads. i need some progression ! i don't think i like how sunwoo mum and taek dad are doing things. obviously it's going to hurt her son. having him over all the time or going to his house needs to be done less obviously if shes going to keep doing it. something is obviously there and i don't think she should be so public about it with her children until they are super serious or have marriage plans. i feel really bad for sunwoo and can't help but think she's not really thinking of him.

Thank you again, for the super quick recaps. While it's funny how quickly one can pick up bits of the language, your recaps are still needed to make sense of it watching it without subs.

This episode did make its length felt. It's not that the stories weren't great, but without subs, as most of it is talking, it was hard to stay with the extended scenes. Also, it's probably because the stories were scares that didn't happen, so while there was a lot of character reactions, it felt like nothing really happened in terms of moving things forward. But I like this community so much, that's alright. But it'd be great to get a sense their lives are moving on closer to the present day.

Love the funny detail about the trophy vase and Doek Sun's not recognising its significance, like how she probably doesn't realise Taek's feelings for her or that he's slowly making a claim on her.

Aww... I now want to go hug my dad. I feel like as I watch this show, I get more and more mature since I'm only 16. To be honest, since I'm around Deoksun's age and the fact that I am Korean makes me understans how we are not able to interpret what our dads feel sometimes. Korean dads are known to act strong and pretend to be nonchalant. This episode was so great in so many ways and I also loved the convo the moms had. My mom's name is Sunyoung (Sunwoo's mom's name) so when Junghwan's mom said she was still young and had a life it made me cry so much. I think we often don't realize what our parents do for us so I am glad the show wants people to realize that, and so I can forgive them for slowing down the Junghwan-Deoksun-Taek triangle.

Now I feel like they really can't have him die because of all they are putting us through.. right?? and like girlfriday said..how would his dad live through it... oh drama gods..pls don't let them do that ever again..

People change their minds, but the creators of Answer me 1988 have said that no one will die in this series. In an interview where they were discussing the probability of low ratings for this instalment of the series, the creator said very clearly that they were going to do what they wanted with this series and focus on the families and neighbourhood since the instalment was likely to fail anyway. He said the third instalment of a series always has poor ratings unless you go for shock value, like someone dying and then proceeded to state clearly that they had no intention of doing that. But even knowing that... I was a little worried while watching. = P So intense.
“Look, for a family drama to have a big impact, someone needs to get cancer or die,” he said with a half-hearted laugh, noting that there wasn’t any of that in “Reply 1988.” - Korea Herald interview with Shin Won-ho 2015-11-08

Kind of feel like this show is a jack of all trades and master of none--and if we look at its relative good and bad points it comes out as mediocre at best. It showed some potential in the beginning and had a few moments of brilliance (that tonkatsu birthday dinner!), but it's been a downward slide into meh since second week. If my turn my brain off and indulge in some meta nostalgia about Answer Mes past, it can be a decent watch. Just had hoped for a little more.

idk. As a family drama, it feels like a shallow and manipulative rendition of the things that bring us back to this genre--each ~small moment of family and friendship feel calculated to wring the audience for tears without putting any heart into it. I'd feel embarrassed to compare this with shows like Golden Apple, or More Beautiful Than a Flower, which really got it. As a trendy, granted, it's better than almost anything on lately, but that's not saying much, and it's not exactly making a mark on the genre or attempting anything special. And as an Answer Me...really, between 97 and the first half of 94, they've already said all there is to say. If they persist in this series, they'll end up like Mick Jagger in the 80s (and I don't mean stranded with Werner Herzog in the jungle).
