Jo Seung-woo drops Pied Piper, Shin Ha-kyun signs on

Saaaaad. Don’t get me wrong, I like Shin Ha-kyun (Mr. Back). But I love Jo Seung-woo (God’s Gift—14 Days), which is why I’m sad to hear that he ended up turning down the offer to headline tvN’s Pied Piper. Just don’t stay away from TV for too long, okay? The new series from the PD-writer team behind Liar Game is about a police crisis negotiation team, and in addition to Shin Ha-kyun, Jo Yoon-hee (King’s Face) and Yoo Joon-sang (Heard It Through the Grapevine) are in talks to join the production.

The new police drama will focus on a task force that deals with tense situations that require highly specialized negotiation skills, in cases that range from suicide attempts to hostage standoffs, to terrorist attacks. They’ll use words instead of weapons to save the day, which I think is a cool concept and a good fit for the Liar Game writer and director, who made math and head games a tense, thrilling ride from start to finish.

Shin Ha-kyun is confirmed to play the lead character, a former corporate negotiator who’s a genius at the art of persuasion. He joins the police crisis negotiations team as an external specialist, and becomes its leader. He’s got a killer smile that disarms people, but in his head, he’s able to exclude emotion, see all the possibilities in a situation, and be coldly calculating. He sounds a lot like Ha Woo-jin actually, except for the smiling part. And if I stop being sad about Jo Seung-woo not playing him (waaah), then I can see Shin Ha-kyun in the role very easily.

Both Jo Yoon-hee and Yoo Joon-sang are still unconfirmed for their roles: Jo Yoon-hee has been cast as a police lieutenant on the crisis negotiations team, and Yoo Joon-sang is up to play a broadcast news anchor. Oh he’d make a good anchor. He’d also make a good evil anchor. Hm, I’m split on whether he’s good or bad, because he’s equally believable either way. Hopefully they’ll get the cast to stick this time.

Pied Piper will follow Cheese in the Trap on Mondays and Tuesdays in March.

I, for one, am more than happy with Shin Ha-kyun. I've liked him since Brain aka that drama no one ever talks about :(

I think we did back then and if he took the daesang award that year over Han I wouldn't complain. Shin for Brain and Han for Tree with deep Root. It's unfortunate that both of them didn't get the recognition they deserved.

I think they both got daesangs for those shows. Brain was KBS, and Deep Roots was SBS, if I remember correctly.

Yeaaah, Shin Ha Kyun is amazing. I like Jo Seung Woo as well but admittedly haven't followed his works as closely as I have Shin's. Can't wait to see him on tv (my computer screen) again.

Love them both! Don't care which one of them took the lead role.

Jo Seung-woo is busy doing musical all through next year with "Werther" which explains why he declined the offer.

I like Shin Ha Kyun more in his serious role compared to comedy. Brain is such an awesome drama. But this drama premise similar to his past movie Running Man or something.

Yoon Joon Sang in this. It must be awesome. So which idole will be sacrifieced in this drama.

I agree, Shin Ha Kyun is more effective in dramatic roles. He tries to hard to be adorable in his comedies.

:( I just watched Classic and fell in love with Jo Seung Woo who I had somehow never seen in anything (although I knew full well who he was). I was really looking forward to this because I have no interest in the other (few) dramas he has done. This is now a definite no watch for me. Bummer.

Odd comments. I just realised that very, very few of us have no problem with either one of them (SHK has a longer cinema curriculum but I felt in love with JSW in Classic... how original, I know!). So, even though the different acting style between the two actors means a different approach to this series in terms of direction and tempo, it sounds an interesting and entertaining drama (at least on paper). Besides it's not SHK's first collaboration witH tvN. Good luck!

Kyaaw, Shin Ha Kyun! First time i saw him in harvest villa opposite lee bo young. That drama is quirk.
Though i am sad joo seung wo leaving, but i am not very disappointed with shin ha kyun. I wish yoo joon sang confirm.
Not knowing yoon joo hee, but she's beautiful from the picture alone

Isn't Jo Yoon Hee and Yoo Joon Sang played together in Unexpected You (my husband got a family) as brother and sister? I like them both there.. hope they confirm to this drama.

I like Shin Ha Kyun, so this news is just a news for me.. also the plot sounds interesting.. I will still tune in..

I love both Jo Seung Woo and Shin Ha Kyun they always give they best for acting and they come from musical too. So I'm not dissapointed much because tvN choose another god of act :)
@hwari I remember a few years ago mr. Shin have been played role police in one drama with Ha Ji Min. So its not Running Man movie, because in that movie mr Shin played role a single parent who works at driver and beeing scheme for murderer.
