Joo Ji-hoon courted to be grim reaper minion in fantasy saga With the Gods

It’s interesting that the big fantasy blockbuster With the Gods is having to go through so many casting rounds, because I’d be first in line to play a minion to Ha Jung-woo’s grim reaper. How fun would that be? Sadly Kim Woo-bin declined and so did Park Bo-young (double saaaaaaad), but now Joo Ji-hoon (Mask) is considering the offer to join the production, as is Cha Tae-hyun (The Producers).

The project from writer-director Kim Yong-hwa of Take Off and 200-Pound Beauty is based on the satirical comic by Joo Ho-min, about the afterlife world where fickle gods put newly deceased human souls on trial (with an afterlife defense attorney provided, of course) to determine your ultimate fate. The central character is a grim reaper (played by Ha Jung-woo), a centuries-old young man who moves between the living and the dead to collect souls and put them on the subway train to the afterlife.

He’s a prickly, deadpan character who always travels with two reaper minions — a man and a woman — and together they’re the grim reaper trio. Joo Ji-hoon is being courted to play one of the reaper underlings, a skilled fighter who’s especially protective of the female grim reaper. She’s the youngest in the group, and she in turn has a one-sided crush on Ha Jung-woo’s character. Aw, can’t reapers find love too? (Though from what I gather, it’s not a manhwa about romance, so I think it’s all unrequited feelings in the workplace.)

Cha Tae-hyun is also considering a role, but it hasn’t been specified which character he’s up for. There’s a human and a lawyer in the story too — an average salaryman who died, and the afterlife public defender who gets assigned to his case — so perhaps it’s one of them. Or maybe he’s playing a god. I think there are a lot of characters in this world.

It’ll be a two-film saga with both parts shot simultaneously, which might explain why it’s been difficult to get actors signed on for such a big chunk of time. Part 1 will be about the afterlife and the reapers and lawyers who work there, and Part 2 will be about those characters’ past lives. Oooh, I can’t wait for the backstories! I can’t imagine how long it’ll be before we see the second film, but I’ll be here! Waiting impatiently!

With the Gods begins shooting in 2016.

Wut? why would Park Bo-young reject an opportunity to act alongside Ha Jung Woo?... the crown prince of Chungmuro (said this fangirl).

PBY could have received a better project for her to turn this down.

It could be as simple as scheduling conflicts....and it's likely her part in a movie like this could be really small, considering there are so many characters and the focus of the story appears to be the guys. Wouldn't blame her if she'd rather have more screen time.

Could've been a prior commitment, didn't like script, didn't like producer/director, busy & wants a break, too much time commitment, or something entirely different!

2016 films are shaping up nicely. Another interesting combo (HJW+CTH+JJH) in the making add the mix of an actress.

What draws me With The God's is the director and HJW which is the only confirmed as of date.

The story is a fresh breeze and if executed well can be charming. I hope to hear confirmations soon.

yeah, so do I now.

(I would actually like to see him with any of the younger crowd of actresses who can act - Kang Sora, Kim Seul-gi, Jo Bo-ah, Lee Yubi* and Kim Ji-won are a few candidates who I think could be great)

*they were actually paired up in Vampire Idol and it was beyond adorable.

Is it possible that he is too tall for boyoung? (or she too petite?). Have we seen that kind of pairing before in dramas?

But I do know they gave up the roles for other reasons. Lol.

They should cast Kim Seul Gi so I can pretend that Shin Soon Ae became the grim reaper's minion after she went into the light in Oh My Ghostess.

speaking of Kim Seul-gi, anyone who hasn't yet seen episode 1 of Splash Splash Love should go and watch it, NOW.

I haven't had this much squee over a sageuk since Queen In-hyun's Man.

I wish I didn't know about King Sejong before I tried to watch it.

When King Sejong appeared my brain automatically did a run down - He is probably in his late teen early 20s. He is married to Lady Shim. His son Hyang is probably 2 or 3yrs old by now. His wife is probably pregnant or just gave birth to Yu etc etc
AAAAaand..... he is going to have a love affair with a girl from the 21st century? NOOOOO....

Now that totally ruins it for me :(. I'm too much of a Sejong fangirl to go there.

So now I'm mad at the writer. Why did they pick him? Why can't they just use a fake king darn it.

As of the time of the drama he's married (typical sageuk political marriage) but hasn't yet consummated it.

I'm not super hung up on historical accuracy so the love affair didn't bother me much, I mean we are talking about a time travel drama and it's not like Joseon kings didn't have concubines anyway.

That's my problem :(. It's always in the back of my head even if it was meant to be fictional.

Now that's a great episode! Reminded me of why I got myself addicted to kdramas. The build-up to the romance was excellently done I think. I was squeeling like a little girl. Great chemistry.

oh! I really like this webtoon! At first, I heard Gong Yoo was gonna be the grim reaper and it kinda fits him but Joo Ji Hoon can handle it well too.

I welcome everything Chae Tae Hyun related.

And for the girl... she needs to be cute (following the comic)... Bo Young fits but also her ghostmate Seulgi.
