KBS adapts youth romance sageuk Moonlight Drawn By Clouds
It looks like palace romance might be a recurring theme in the coming drama year. Time-slip romance Moon Lovers is being shopped at SBS, and now KBS is adapting a fusion historical youth romance novel called Moonlight Drawn By Clouds. The web novel by writer Yoon Yi-soo is about a crossdressing heroine who gives out love advice posing as a man, and somehow ends up as a eunuch serving under the crown prince, leading to hijinks, friendship, and love. Heh, it sounds like Splish Splash Love without the time travel.
The web novel takes place in 19th-century Joseon, during the reign of King Sunjo. The heroine makes a living giving advice to men as an expert in all matters concerning women, using the clever conceit that she’s a worldly man who knows all about romance. Well that’s certainly an interesting reason to be crossdressing, I’ll give you that.
Through a series of fated incidents involving a scholar, she is awarded a position in the palace, but as a eunuch. So then she enters a world where no women are allowed, and sends the palace buzzing with her love advice. As a eunuch, she’ll befriend Crown Prince Hyomyeong, King Sunjo’s first son and heir to the throne, and Kim Sat-gat, the famous Joseon poet and literary scholar. She’ll be their trusted friend, and of course eventually she’ll also become their love interest.
It’s described as a youth palace drama in the vein of Sungkyunkwan Scandal and The Moon That Embraces the Sun, and production company KBS Media is currently in casting talks. There’s really no telling what kind of drama we’ll get based on the description alone (everybody wants to be the next Sungkyunkwan Scandal but so few fusion sageuks are), though I like the premise and the potential fun of involving real historical figures. So… what’s a girl gotta do to get Yoon Doo-joon and Kim Seul-gi in this drama? Rain dance? Firstborn? Name it.
Moonlight Drawn By Clouds is being planned for a 2016 broadcast on KBS.
