Let’s Eat spinoff about drinking in the works at tvN

A Let’s Eat spinoff about booze? Does this seem like a dangerous idea to anyone else? I mean, I like my likker, but I also like my liver. Anyone who’s caught an episode of tvN’s foodie drama franchise Let’s Eat knows what I mean — the show is famous for these torturous scenes where they tempt you with mouth-watering food-porn at every turn, making it impossible to watch the show without grabbing something to eat just to keep from dying of envy-hunger. If they do for liquor what they’ve done for food, we’ll all be in the hospital by Episode 10.

The quirky drama series about food and neighbors and single life began on tvN in 2013, and the network followed it up with a second season that had a successful run this past year. Let’s Eat 2 was mostly a spinoff — series star Yoon Doo-joon was the only cast member who continued on as his fast-talking food-obsessed insurance salesman and food blogger character, a self-proclaimed food expert who likes to pontificate as much as he likes to eat.

Producers have reportedly been working on a drinking version of Let’s Eat (which, c’mon, has to be called Let’s Drink) for a long while, and are now developing it for tvN’s drama slate next year. Director Choi Gyu-shik, who worked on Let’s Eat 2, is at the helm. There’s actually a little cable drama about drinking called Cheers to Me that’s airing right now on O’live and UMAX, and it seems to have a similar theme, but I expect that the Let’s Eat version will use more of the franchise’s trademarks like the in-your-face food sequences.

Perhaps Yoon Doo-joon will break up with yet another drama girlfriend (that’d be Seo Hyun-jin, in Season 2) and become a drunkard because of a broken heart. They already do a lot of drinking on Let’s Eat, but it might require some heartbreak to fuel Let’s Drink levels of consumption. I don’t actually know that watching people drink onscreen has quite the same pull as food, honestly, but I guess I’ll stock my fridge with soju. Yunno, just in case.

Let’s Drink (and Drink and Drink and Drink) is being planned for a 2016 broadcast.

@crazykel Yes!!! All my beans for Kim Seul Gi as his leading lady.
@pogo, Go Go! i'm so enamoured with that drama. It shouldn't be PongDangPongDang (splish splash) but KkungKkung (heart thumping). i wished it was longer cause they're both so cute together. Their on-screen chemistry, damn....it's so palpable that you could cut it with a knife.

All my beans to Kim Seul Gi!!!!~~❤

I'm a bit disappointed for doojoon didn't do his trademark fast talking and all the foodporn thingy with all those royal cuisines (or at least at the modern ddokpokki) on splashsplash.
Well at least seulgi got her perverted ghost mode on.

Will dramabeans recap splash splash btw?

dude, no. Yoon Doo-joon is flawless as Gu Dae-young, but can we let him play someone who ISN'T Gu Dae-young, now?

Though I would be all for it if they got him back and his costar was another tvN fave, Kim Seul-gi. Their chemistry in Splash Splash Love is positively electric.

I hope it will be the story of a connoisseur enjoying all types of alcohol, like different types of wine, spirits, and mixed drinks. Something more than getting drunk on soju, because we already see plenty of that in dramaland.

I am with you. It's bad enough that they have drinking scenes in just about every kdrama. I don't want them promoting something that is actually bad for society as a whole. Maybe if they also show the serious pitfalls of drinking then I can get behind it.

Yeah, the way drinking is shown in most dramas really makes me uncomfortable. The most unhealthy behaviors are the ones that seem to be glorified: drinking expressly to get drunk, drinking because you are having problems, drinking due to peer pressure, blackout drinking. And I'm also uncomfortable knowing that a lot of it is due to product placement by soju and beer companies.

I'm with you too. Drinking in kdramas is often used to solve problems or to admit feelings. I'm not comfortable with it because since it's in virtually every single kdrama (name a heroine that hasn't been so drunk she had to be carried home?) and that can only lead to 'normalisation'.

I do think Koreans drink a lot. All the ones I know in London certainly always drink and seem a bit surprised I don't (I drink alcohol, but once in a blue moon only and usually it's like half a glass of whatever at most). Because we're in the UK they understand (though Brits have their own bizarre drinking culture), but I wonder if it were in Korea if people wouldn't be offended left and right if someone didn't drink. (I confess I worry about this as I do want to go to Korea one day and hopefully live there for a while.)

Food is visual. Drinks not so much. Even in the S2 Finale, when they drank the gimmicky Mexican Bulldogs at the amped up Taco Bell of a Tex-Mex place (the food, sad face), they only devoted a couple of lines to their cocktails.

I don't know how this would translate well. Mainly seems like an opportunity for characters to get drunk and make poor life choices.

This would technically be almost like a 4th season, because after the two drama seasons they did a variety season Let's Eat With Friends. Not only did they keep Yoon Doo-joon and Seo Hyun-jin, he brought a bandmate and she brought an actress friend and they traveled internationally to dine. Actor Kim Ji-Hoon was a guest star (I follow his instagram) on at least one of those shows, and I REMAIN PRESSED it didn't show up on one of the US drama/variety services.

THIS IS AN APPALLING IDEA. I MEAN REALLY, CRIMINALLY STUPID.

K Dramas already glorify, promote and celebrate drinking FAR too much, making abstinence or sane moderation seem a sign of weakness and bad character. The country has either the first or second per capita consumption of alcohol in the world, with all its attendant problems, and now they're going to build an entire series around that destructive obsession?

And that's why I'm really wondering if this is being motivated somehow by liquor companies using it as a big marketing campaign.

Well, I don't drink alcohol (I'm Moslem btw) and it seems appalling for me. Let's Eat 1&2 are already bad enough to make me go crave something like donkatsu, jjajangmyeon, fried chicken, etc (yeah even all sorts of food I SHOULDN'T EAT).
Now they wanna make me crave for soju or beer? Oh dear, I hope not. Or if tvN airs it, I should have better self-control not to watch it.

So they censor cigatette and knives in tv but allow this sort of glorification of alcohol?
Pretty stupid idea. I hope it doesnt get aired.

Hmmm, given Korea's unhealthy relationship with alcohol, this doesn't seem like a good idea, lol.

I've always found it funny when the public criticizes idols for advertising alcoholic beverages on TV, claiming it contributes to the underage drinking problem the country has, yet they never seem to think that maybe it's *gasp* society itself and its obsession with drinking that makes these teens want to drink irresponsibly at such a young age.

One thing that has always bothered me about K-Dramas (and, to an extent, J-Dramas as well) is when they have no respect for characters that say they don't drink/don't want to drink and pressure them into drinking... I've seen it happen multiple times. I hope real life in Korea isn't like that!

Exactly what I was thinking especially Koreans have also a coffee drinking culture like the west. Perhaps trips to different bars, lounges, cafes, smoothie outlets.........

Look, I'm not a huge drinker, and I can live the rest of my life without alcohol. BUT I don't get the comments knocking the fact that this show will be about drinking. Is it worse than shows that are based on violence and murder? Or guns? Why aren't we complaining about how that can influence youth?

I understand the worry about glorifying alcohol, but we don't even know if that will be the case. There are people who truly take their alcohol seriously and don't do it for fun or pressure, those who seek out drinks out of interest. The show could be about that. If not I'll eat my words in 2016, but until then I'll keep an open mind.

I'm a non-drinker for reasons of physical intolerance. I quite literally cannot consume alcohol, but I have no problems with the moderate and responsible use of it. My best friend of more than 30 years was twice NZ Sommelier of the Year, and I love hearing him talk about wine. So I'm no anti-alcohol prude.

But this is a Korean show, coming from a culture that is already acknowledged and documented as having a SERIOUSLY dysfunctional drinking culture, as the most perfunctory of Google searches will show. The odds that this show will promote enlightened, restrained enjoyment of alcohol in a moderate way seem vanishingly remote.

It wouldn't necessarily have to do with how much someone drinks, more so how they drink. The subtlety of how a specific liquor is made and how many different ways there are to enjoy it could be the main focus.

What if this drama actually shows the downfalls of a culture with drinking overconsumption. Perhaps the premise will highlight that in a positive way - it can be both fun and educational. I don't think people should get too upset yet...the drama is simply speaking about a drinking spinoff. Hasn't even aired yet.

Food is visual so watching Lets Eat really make you want to grab for snack. But I can't imagine watching images of drinks make you want to grab the nearest bottle in your liquor cabinet? Unless you're an alcoholic and on alcohol withdrawal, maybe? I like my drinks and the fun it brings when I'm with friends so I'd imagine this will be a fun show to watch with my friend. Laughing at people's drunk antics from the comfort of your couch, that doesn't sound so bad to me.
