Oh My Venus: Episode 5

Things get a little more personal in this episode, and some questions are answered in regards to Young-ho’s past. He’s got a lot to overcome, and it’s no wonder he’s so withdrawn and unemotional. But his wall against the world isn’t completely impenetrable, and it could be something as simple as an adorable dimple that breaks through to him.

EPISODE 5 RECAP

Joo-eun’s stalker advances on her, crouching down when she falls to the floor and giving her this creepy smile. He seems to think she should recognize him, and her fear doesn’t faze him. Joo-eun gasps out a weak, “Please save me,” and right on cue, Young-ho bursts through her front door.

Young-ho stops long enough to ask if Joo-eun knows this man, and as she shakes her head, the stranger throws the first punch. Young-ho casually puts the stalker through a series of wrestling moves, stopping between actions to check on Joo-eun and ask why she didn’t answer her phone. Later as the police cart Stalker away, we see Woo-shik, watching everything from his car.

At the station they discover that the man is Joo-eun’s downstairs neighbor, and the police assume this is just a misunderstanding. Joo-eun is horrified that they don’t take her fear seriously, especially when the officer is all, Why would he stalk someone like you? She’s actually told not to be so sensitive when she asks why the cops are discounting her version of events.

A voice rings out, “Are you happy?” and Young-ho saunters over to point out a poster indicating that women are happy in their city. He turns to Stalker to ask if he remembers him. We see that this was the man who followed Joo-eun through the rain the day she and Young-ho first met, and that Young-ho had seen him. He’d also seen Stalker carrying the poinsettia up to her place tonight.

The cops point out that the only person with injuries is Stalker, and that it could be bad if he decided to get a lawyer. Joo-eun agrees the legal system is a joke, but her voice rises when she says that all that’s needed is a bit of sincere caring for what she went through tonight. She advises they be more caring with future victims, and walks out.

Young-ho follows her and she thanks him for remembering her stalker’s face, and helping her tonight. But he’s frustrated — that she didn’t tell those jerks she’s a lawyer, and that what he did was self-defense. Why did she become a lawyer when she won’t even defend herself? He’s still angry, and offers to go beat the stalker up and she can defend him in court.

But Joo-eun stops him, saying that it’s not worth him getting hurt or worse just to punish the man. She explains that the guy would get the bare minimum punishment, if any, and that it’s because she’s a lawyer and knows this that she didn’t have higher expectations. She does thank Young-ho for helping her again, joking that he must owe her major favors from a past life.

Young-ho is still more upset than Joo-eun, and counters that if he does owe her, he must really be in her debt. She says that she can stay at Hyun-woo’s tonight, and he puts her in his car. And again, we see Woo-shik watching from the parking lot.

Joo-eun calls Hyun-woo, but her household is in an uproar — Min-joon’s grandmother is covered in bruises again, and nobody believes her anymore when she says these bruises are an accident. Young-ho drops off Joo-eun, but she goes to a seedy motel instead of her friend’s house. But Young-ho is onto her and finds her checking in, deadpanning that her “friend” sure does have a lot of rooms at her house.

He drags her out, but Joo-eun is embarrassed for him to see her like this. But she admits she’s too scared to go home, so he offers to take her somewhere “out of your world.” It reminds her of his words outside his fancy hotel suite, and she jumps to the wrong conclusion, but Young-ho pretends maidenly horror — he only meant his guest room.

With one last warning that he’s done saving her for tonight, Young-ho leaves her alone (though awww, her stuffed sloth is in the room to keep her company). In his own room, Young-ho clutches his bad knee, which we see now that he twisted when he was running up to Joo-eun’s apartment, and again when he neutralized her stalker.

In the morning, all three boys coming running to Joo-eun’s screams of, “Save me, please save me!!!” Ahaha, she has leg cramps, and is stuck in bed. Young-ho accuses her of doing this because she’s too shy to just come out, and makes her say complimentary things to him before he tells the guys to “catch the mouse” (the words for “mouse” and “cramp” sound the same in Korean).

Ji-woong gets all worked up to hear that his Ma’am has a stalker, and Young-ho hilariously takes all the credit for saving her. Joon-sung apologizes for their bland, healthy diet, and Ji-woong shares a bite of his steak, but Young-ho refuses to let her have any salt. He does produce her medications from his pocket, surprising her with his thoroughness.

All three guys exclaim over the pretty girl who’s photo is in Joo-eun’s phone, though none of them recognize it as her. HA, Young-ho looks closer at the photo, then asks for proof. She just barks at them to wait and see — when she gets thin, they’ll all fall for her beauty.

Later Young-ho laughs at Joo-eun’s claim to have been “Daegu’s Venus” and that she was every Daegu boy’s first love, but he’s distracted by his sore knee and calls Manager Min to ask him a favor. He wants to go to Daegu, but he needs a guardian. Min asks if something happened to Young-ho’s leg, but Young-ho just says that he’ll find out by going to Daegu. Interesting.

Joo-eun talks about the stalker situation with Hyun-woo and little brother Jae-hyuk, though she’s reluctant to tell her mother about it. Hyun-woo offers to let her stay at her place, but Joo-eun declines. Hyun-woo tells Jae-hyuk not to get married, and to stop mooching off his sister — well, someone had to say it. But when she’s gone, Joo-eun says she’s going to sell her place, and tells her brother to buy a store in order to provide for his new family. At least Jae-hyuk feels guilty, and offers to pay her back double.

As it turns out, Woo-shik went into the police station after everyone left the night before, and the cops had shown him some CCTV footage of Joo-eun’s stalker the first time Young-ho saved her from him. He goes to Joo-eun’s where Stalker is again climbing the stairs to bring her another pot of poinsettias, and punches the guy, warning him never to come near Joo-eun again. Stalker has the nerve to say that Woo-shik has no right, since he saw them breaking up.

Woo-shik postpones a date with Soo-jin, and she responds by calling Joo-eun to her office. She recalls Joo-eun taking her out to celebrate passing the bar exam, and hinting that she has a gift for Soo-jin. Woo-shik had joined them, bringing Soo-jin chocolates and Joo-eun a blouse, which she’d complained was too conservative.

Soo-jin’s real gift had arrived, a nerdy boy from the engineering school. A surprise blind date? That’s a crappy gift. The boy had looked like he literally wanted to hide under the table, and had asked Soo-jin to “tell Joo-eun that I get it.” Apparently this date was a surprise to him too — he’d thought he was here to meet with Joo-eun.

In his upset, he’d told Soo-jin that Joo-eun obviously pities her, and that people like her should have some common sense. Soo-jin was so hurt, she’d burst into tears right there at the table.

Back in the present, Joo-eun refuses Soo-jin’s request to take on a case, saying that it goes against the agreements she made when she was hired. She will never take on sexual assault or rape cases, even when the accused is a woman, as in this case. Soo-jin makes it clear that this is a command, and that she outranks Joo-eun. She’s cold as ice, though when Joo-eun storms out of her office, she pops a whole chocolate into her mouth.

Joon-sung’s sparring draws a crowd at the gym, and everyone agrees that he’s good enough to be the welterweight champion. Young-ho tells a colleague that he wants to compete in the lightweight category instead, because there’s no current welterweight champion, and Joon-sung wants to win a title with a challenge.

Joo-eun sighs at her boring, healthy lunch, and dreams of fried chicken and jjajangmyun. Young-ho’s spectre comes to wave her dreams away, and she wonders if the hallucinations are a side effect of the diet. She whines when she’s hungry again soon after eating, but remembering how Young-ho didn’t believe her about her photo, she gains new determination.

The little CF queen, Yi-jin (Whoops, I got her name wrong last week, sorry!), comes to the gym to talk to Joon-sung, insisting that Ji-woong let them speak alone. Joon-sung reminds her that he agreed to do the commercial, but she’s upset that he’s donating his entire pay for it — it makes her look bad.

But she’s determined to donate her pay too, so that she doesn’t seem greedy, and warns Joon-sung not to say otherwise to the press. She’s curious why he donates to charities for unwed mothers when he himself is an orphan — why not donate to orphanages? Joon-sung just gives her his famous thousand-yard stare, and when she assumes he’s staring because he likes her, he says he doesn’t. “Are you gay, then?” ~stare~

Young-ho’s stepmom, her brother, and Young-joon have dinner, and it’s interesting how rude Stepmom’s oppa is to her when there’s no rich family around to impress. Oppa is upset that Young-ho will be appointed director of the company while Young-joon is basically ignored — but he’s not truly blood-related, since his father is Grandma’s son-in-law (Young-ho’s father was married to her daughter, Young-ho’s mother, who passed away). Stepmom insists that Young-joon is still family, but Oppa tells her to wake up before it all falls apart.

Young-ho’s father arrives with flowers, but he walks right past the room where his family is eating, and into the next room, where Young-ho waits for his marriage-date. Young-ho notes that she’s late, but guesses that she’s really not coming, and that his father set him up. He leaves angry, telling his father to eat alone.

Joo-eun goes to a coffee shop with her suitcase and starts to order something nice and sweet, but Young-ho pops up behind her and changes her order to something healthier. Ha, she pokes him to make sure he’s real this time, and he is. He notices her suitcase and she says she’s staying with him until she finds a new place — Ji-woong said it was okay. I notice that Young-ho doesn’t object.

He even drives her to his place, making her hold the flowers from his father, and he sees that she brought her pot of poinsettias from Stalker. She says that even if they came from someone she hates, she shouldn’t blame the flowers for their bad beginnings.

In turn, Joo-eun notices that Young-ho bought new sheets, and figures out that he gave her his last night. He teases that he might want to have girls over, and Joo-eun congratulates him — his scandal regarding Anna Sue seems to be dying down. She realizes they aren’t heading to his place, and he says he’s going to show her his ideal woman.

He takes her to a gym where they teach jiu jitsu, and Young-ho shows her his ideal woman — a woman who can protect herself. He and Joo-eun get dressed to spar, and Young-ho proceeds to teach Joo-eun how to protect herself against any stalkers or attackers she may meet in the future. This involves getting into some pretty intimate positions, which scandalizes Joo-eun, but she’s tempted by the opportunity to attack Young-ho as much as she wants. Can’t really blame the girl.

At one point, Young-ho wraps his legs around Joo-eun and pulls her down on top of himself, and she finds her heart beating fast at the close contact. He does it again, and it brings their faces close enough for their lips to meet. Joo-eun is clearly affected, but Young-ho’s expression doesn’t change. Ha, he even flips her over and gives her a warning for too much contact.

Things get betterworse for Joo-eun when Young-ho wraps her legs around himself and tells her to look him in the eye, and this time she pulls him down face-to-face. Somehow I don’t think he’s as unaffected as he’d like her to think, and he almost looks like he’s trying not to laugh at her discomfort.

In the car afterward, Young-ho clarifies that his ideal woman is strong, because strong women are sexy. Joo-eun thought his ideal type was women like Anna Sue, and Young-ho perks up at her interest in his tastes. He brings up the “kiss” from earlier, and Joo-eun changes the subject, telling him that she’s lost a few more kilos. He starts to disagree based on what he felt tonight (grrr) making Joo-eun say she’ll worry about her own body, but Young-ho reminds her that her body belongs to him. But he does congratulate her, and calls her Daegu’s Venus in a teasing, growly voice.

Joo-eun lays awake that night, remembering the accidental kiss — and interestingly, so does Young-ho. In fact, he tosses and turns more than she does.

Joo-eun wakes in a good mood and makes everyone a healthy breakfast, and Young-ho isn’t there to see her sneak the boys extra meat. He’s on his way to Daegu with Manager Min, though when Min mentions Sun-young (the girl they’re trying to get him to marry), Young-ho quips that he and Manager Min would be a better match.

Joo-eun hears from Hyun-woo that her ex-husband, the one who produces a celebrity gossip show, has gone to America to look for John Kim. She dutifully does her exercises and eats healthy even though Young-ho is out of town, though she has to hide her excited reaction when he calls to check up on her.

She lies and claims to be relaxing with a bottle of wine, though she’s caught out when he video-calls her back and he sees her in her workout clothes. He reminds her of some things to remember in her workout, making her complain about his nagging, and he teases that she misses him and has feelings for him. She asks if he’s in America, and he has fun making her think he might be there visiting Anna Sue, enjoying her reaction.

Awww, he’s really in the hospital — it’s cute that he didn’t want her to know. Manager Min says that his doctor will start testing tomorrow, and Young-ho nervously wishes Min a good evening. Later Young-ho goes through testing on his knee, and Joo-eun texts her friend’s ex, asking if he found John Kim yet.

She sends videos of herself exercising to Young-ho as he asked, so that he can make sure she’s doing them correctly, though he mostly just seems happy to be able to see her. He even tilts nearly off his bed trying to see her face when the video is unclear. Could you possibly be any cuter right now?

Young-ho gets his test results — his osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer that he’s been fighting all his life, has finally been cured. They figure that his recent knee pain is just phantom pain, and Young-ho can hardly process the good news. He remembers frightening, painful surgical procedures from his childhood, when he’d begged his father to save him.

But the doctor is still concerned about his psychoneurosis, which causes Young-ho a lot of distress, depression, and anxiety. He does compliment Young-ho on his general health, and Young-ho says he was just trying to survive.

Manager Min takes Young-ho to a nearby hotel to get some rest, and he texts Joo-eun more exercises to work on until he gets back. Min watches over him (even bringing him a rose — yellow for friendship, awww), and Young-ho sleeps through a whole day and night. He wakes up cheerful and perky, gives Min one of his adorable finger-hearts, and says he’s ready to head home.

He walks in on Joo-eun in the middle of a balancing exercise, and startles her so much that she tilts off-center. She crashes into Young-ho and they both fall to the floor, and Young-ho is struck dumb — Joo-eun isn’t wearing her glasses, and her face is definitely thinner. She says something to him, but the sight of her adorable dimple has him so mesmerized that he doesn’t even hear her. He can only smile and poke her dimple, while she wonders what’s gotten into him.

COMMENTS

It’s about time the attraction kicked in! At least on Joo-eun’s part, because seriously, how can she not notice that her trainer is so very attractive. I’m shocked it took this long. I do think Young-ho has found Joo-eun at least interesting long since, and it’s obvious that he thinks she’s pretty darn adorable now, because who wouldn’t. Even when he expresses disbelief that she used to be “Daegu’s Venus,” he seems to be internally laughing, like he actually can believe it but he’s just yanking her chain. His facial expressions are hard to read, but I feel like he does that a lot, teasing her to get a reaction because he thinks she’s cute. But his requesting videos of Joo-eun, and his enjoyment in watching her, are the most telling — he missed her when he went out of town, and wanted to see her. It’s adorable how he tries to make it about the exercise, but he’s having a hard time hiding how amusing he finds Joo-eun lately. And I love flirty Young-ho, so I hope that side of him kicks into high gear now that he’s seeing Joo-eun as an attractive lady instead of just a project.

At least now we know what the whole stalker plotline was meant for — to give Young-ho a reason to teach Joo-eun to protect herself. It just seemed to random and shoehorned-in, so I’m glad it wasn’t just there to create tension, and served an actual narrative purpose. I’m less irritated with her damsel-in-distress act now that she’s actively doing something about it. I know people — and characters — aren’t perfect, but I do get frustrated when someone has an opportunity to change something about themselves and doesn’t, relying instead on others to take care of them. On reflection, I think that’s what bothered me about Joo-eun constantly crying to be saved… if your life is that perilous, then learn to save yourself! Now that she’s being proactive (even if it’s because someone else is making her be proactive), I’m not so annoyed. That one thing about her just seemed so out of place, when she’s so kickass in nearly every other way. Not to mention the opportunities that learning jiu jitsu offers for more skinship. I don’t think anyone will complain about that.

Because aside from the occasional helplessness, I just really love Joo-eun. She’s such an interesting and optimistic person. She sees the world in a really positive way, even when terrible things happen to her. Even small things like the pot of poinsettias — even though they came from Stalker, she still loves them for the beautiful flowers they are, and doesn’t blame them because of where they came from. I think that attitude will come into play when she starts to learn about Young-ho and his past. He’ll probably expect her to judge him based on his health and his family, while she’ll only see him for the good, caring person he is now.

I also appreciate that in this show, Young-ho really does have reason to worry about his past affecting his present relationships. So often in dramas, the conflict over a character’s past seems blown out of proportion, but in this case I feel that the concern is warranted. Young-ho has been fighting a deadly disease his whole life, and there are very few people that wouldn’t be concerned about getting into a long-term relationship with someone who could either die, or pass on those genes to any future children. Not to mention his horrifically manipulative family, who don’t even mention their plans to him before just going ahead with them. Either one of those obstacles would make a woman pause and think before entering into a marriage with Young-ho, but I think Joo-eun is just the woman to dispel his fears. I know I’m projecting future events, but I can see her being able to see him for what he is, separate and worthy despite his health and family challenges. Let’s hear it for strong, independent women.

I love this show. I can't believe how hot Young Ho/Joo Eun scenes are. I feel like he's constantly flirting with her and I love it. I could do without the cracks at her body, except that even when it does imply uncomplimentary things, it kind of just feels like teasing and not like he really means it. Perhaps that's just my deep felt love for So Ji Sub excusing all unsavoury behaviour. Anyway, Young Ho is still the best. The cramp scene was so cute! Shin Min Ah is really adorable.

Those flowers were from Chief Min though not Young Ho's Dad. I think I may be in love with Chief Min. He's just so thoughtful and cute with Young Ho.

Forgot to say, at least it's becoming clearer why Soo Jin has it out for Joo Eun. Even though it's a terrible misunderstanding, poor, sad Soo Jin for believing that about her friend for so long. Time to actually talk about your issues Soo Jin! Then you can either get over it, forgive her or realise that you had it all wrong all along. Talk to each other!

I'm having trouble with Younger Soo-jin, just because I want to smack her and say, girl, just because you're fat, it's not a reason to apologise to the world. Don't LET them make you feel like that, and have some damned faith in yourself, if not in your friends.

It's one thing to hold a grudge, but another thing to lash out to a person because you're upset about something else.

It's like the more she has problems with Woo-Shik, the more she oppresses Joo Eun, using her power as her boss to toss in more work at Joo Eun while she goes out having massages in the middle of the day.

I have no patience for her. I mean, I'm fat but I don't go around letting people trample me and using it as an excuse to be mean.

Hey! That's Manager Min! Manager Min set him up to overhear his stepfamily next door. And you can see him smirk a little when Young Ho punishes him with eating by himself, ha. Neither of them are angry at the other, pretty much ever.

I love Manager Min. He's clearly Young Ho's family in all the ways that matter, like the hyung he never had but definitely needed. It's a little weird when you see that his step-brother also got a stand-in father, but the uncle just seems... shady.

I have not heard of that self-defense sport (jiu-jitsu) before. It was like one of those Tango-foreplay scenes. I would never known that a martial art could make such a sexy scene!

I love how Young-ho teases her all the time. It is always fun to watch two characters starts to fall for each other.

I also like his friendship with Manager Min, I felt more bromance between these two than the main trio.

Anyway this is the first episode that really pulled me in the feels were too many and the last scene where he noticed her dimples had to be replayed a couple of times .
The fatgirlgonethin don't even know her name is just the type i hate.Feeling that now that she's thinner she should exact revenge, girl please get over yourself already.Yes people hurt you when you're fat and you allow them too,get over it,own your body eff the worlds beauty standards.
I get wanting to be thinner but her behavior is urgh...moving on.
Shina minah is just the cutest, kinda wish she had the chubby cheeks for a while longer, her weight loss feels rushed.

I don't think she actually lost a lot of weight. Her face's just starting to get a bit "deflated" (I have no idea if that can be said in english).
By the way, dimples don't disappear when one gains weight, on the contrary they become more intense. Yes, show, you didn't get that right but... who cares?

1. Chief Min. THE FEELS. :-) I love how the "chaebol's son with kind family stweard" trope is playing out so well here. Like, SO well, that I'm like "wow...does he feel THIS much affection for Young Ho? And the flowers?" but I like it.

2. In a way, this being a body change drama means that Joo-Eun is her own second lead. Like, I'm glad they've showed a spark of attraction there *before* she's lost all her weight, but I feel like I've fallen for Chubby Joo Eun, only to have Slim Joo Eun swan into view and steal the man's affections.

...*cough* this may or may not be because I'm more a chubby Joo-Eun in real life too. :-P

3. Gotta say it's MEGA HOT to see a trainer who vocally likes strong women and I think I could *very* easily believe Young Ho is a guy who digs a muscular, bigger-than-drama-skinny woman. I really hope they don't put Shin Min-Ah right but to her suuuper thin state, and then just say "oh but she's really strong and look at her kicks!" ala Han Ye Seul in Birth of a Beauty (though I dearly love how she kept that character internally consistent in a way that was believable.)

I second all your points. Chief Min is the most adorable, and his relationship with Young Ho is so cute. I need regular scenes with these two.

I'm with you on the chubby Joo Eun front (prolly for the same reasons, ha!). I wish he'd never disparaged her appearance, even though I do think it was said somewhat teasingly. I wanted him to like her, be attracted to her the whole way through. However, Shin Min Ah's dimples are truly adorable so who can blame him? :)

Anything that has them doing ju jitsu again and again and again has my vote. Definitely love the fact that he's about strength and healthy-ness predominantly.

That's the bromance I was hoping for with the boy-trio... but Chief Min nails it, rose in front pocket and all.

re: her weight.

Young Ho fell for her, even when she was tubby. Her kickass attitude with other stuff, just not her own body.

I am very GLAD bec I didn't totally enjoy 200 Pound Beauty for its shallowness and the after-effect.

More importantly - I think Young Ho's also doing it from a HEALTH standpt, having gone through what he did himself. He just respects healthy food, healthy lifestyles, exercise etc as he himself was almost facing death, and not through lifestyle choices. He wasn't given a choice, whereas Joo Eun has control over living healthier.

Love this episode! Love manager Min! Is it just me being too paranoid when I think that darn stalker plant is still dangerous & the stalker isn't gone yet? I get the feeling it either has a tracking device or listening bug in it! Maybe that's how the world will find out Young Ho is John Kim!

Orrrrr..,

I'm being delulu :P

Anyway LOVE LOVE Young Ho & Joo Eun together! Can't wait for the romance to go up a few notches!

If Young Ho got his treatment in Daegu, does this mean he knows 'Daegu's Venus' from before? Is that what the 'I wonder' in the car was about? I hope not, I want him to like her as she is now.

Woo Shik, what is your deal? You broke up with her, it's clear you're a good person and you're worried but it's time to move on and put your energy in your new relationship. At least I hope that's his motivation for stalking Joo Eun and not that he's stalking Young Ho. Otherwise that would really suck.

Some of the early synopses of this drama stated that they had known each other before.

I always wondered why that didn't come into play in the flashbacks.

OK, i can say that ep. 5 sealed the deal about this drama for me. it was all over cuteness! with such lovely OTP, who needs second leads? tho i still hope soo jin and woo shik aren't so bad as they seem and they have their reasons as we slowy see.

The jiu jitsu scene was so hot i blushed,,seriously i wonder if kim woo bin watched this episode..lol

Yeap chief min is cute. i start to like him it's nice that the actor is playing nice character for a change and not some nasty father or antagonist (what is funny is that he played as shin mina bf KWB's daddy in heirs)

I think i'm going to rewatch some scenes from this episode. it was really the best episode so far and hope it keeps better and better

OH MY GOSH THIS EPISODE + EPISODE 6 = FAINTING !

i love the way Manager Min is the only person who cares for Young-Ho really.... I also love the way Young-Ho & Manager interact like Manager Min is his 2nd father and one of the person MAYBE Young-Ho trusts more inside the square-circle family

I SO LOVEEEEEE THE jiu-jitsu scenes (much LOVE MORE on episode 6 though i watched it RAW)

I also noticed that when Hyun-Woo's mother-in-law has bruises in her eyes... i kinda feel there will be a topic about domestic violence on women & Joo-Eun's specialty being a LAWYER will be used in that theme.

I am so happy that they have 'de-fatted' Joo-eun this early. Not that I found her to be fat to begin with, just a little on the chunky or bonny side as they would say in the UK. Young-ho has some heavy baggage to work through, but I can see (pleasepleaseplease) this all falling away in the coming episodes with Joo-eun's steadfast help and positive resolve. With them having her clear her hurdles so early in the production, this just leaves more time for "them" to do great things together, and together being the stressed word and desire here!! (pleasepleaseplease)

I FRIGGIN LOVE THIS DRAMA!!!!

Tad worried that she's already beginning to lose weight when we're just 1/4 of the way in... 'cause that just means alot of drama to come. The whole chaebol thing hasn't even come into play full throttle yet. It's going to be tedious watching the rich family do their family politics thing... It'll be funny if...

Plot twist: Woo Shik faked this whole thing with what's her face bitchy ex friend to get Joo Eun to be better in whatever way he thinks she needs to change. And basically threw her into Young ho's arms.

But then again, I'm not the writer.

1) The police station scene: seriously? “Why would he stalk someone like you?” And Mrs. Lawyer just walks out? (I’m guessing then, their response to a rape case would be “You asked for it because of how you look.”) Although I’m sure this can happen in SK police stations, it angers me greatly with this show, which is using the scenario a) as a joke and b) to imply that overweight people cannot be pretty/desirable. Very disappointing Young-ho doesn’t speak up either.
2) The Daegu Venus scene: Are they blind? Dumb? Why does this drama keep insisting that beauty is something exclusive to thin people? Why does it keep insisting that Joo-eun looks unrecognisably different when she does not at all? They play it like it’s something viewers are supposed to laugh at... but it’s not funny. Sidenote: Joo-eun was ‘every boy’s first love’ Daegu Venus, Young-ho’s childhood doctor is in Daegu... this isn’t going to be coincidental, right?
3) Poor rich boy story: It’s not working for me. Twenty years+ on they finally realise he’s 99.9% cured? Or twenty years+ on he finally realises he suffering phantom pain? Did he not go for check-ups in between? Sorry, but I don’t understand how I’m supposed to connect the point A (childhood) and point G (current moment). I feel like the writer roughly sketched each character (a few major points of their story) but then didn’t think about how to fill in the rest, how these beings would function in the course of their whole lives up to now. The flashbacks to point A shove the sympathy card in our faces for this poor, poor boy, but it doesn’t match with the rich, waited-on-left-and-right, skilled, famous, highly capable and strong guy (even if he comes with a sad puppy-face look) and the twenty years+ in between. (On plus side: there’s more bromance between YH and Secretary Min than with the boy-trio!!!)
4) So, setting Soo-jin up with a guy who turns out to be a jerk is driving Soo-jin’s revenge? But Joo-eun, from high school on, never struck me as so dumb that she wouldn’t realise that guy was a jerk nor as mean that she would set up a friend with either someone whom she doesn’t know at all or someone that she knows is a jerk. And even if all that played out, what happened right after the failed date? Did Soo-jin/Joo-eun never talk again and Joo-eun doesn’t have a hunch that that’s where things went wrong? (Sidenote: So Soo-jin and Woo-shik actually have known each other for a very long time too. That didn’t occur to me before.)
5) Joo-eun only has one single friend in Seoul that she can stay with? Where does her family, her brother live if they can show up suddenly at a restaurant but she can’t go stay with them? It makes sense to me (my European mindset) that he offers her his spare room* after being assaulted but I can’t believe she had nowhere else to go. At least have her call a couple more people. Or make it 3am. Or her having lost her phone. (*I thought Henry/Korean Snake are staying in the villa too? They’ve...

...They’ve only got one set of bed sheets each? I thought the servants set up the whole house for them? Oxygen capsule but not spare sheets?)
6) Korean snake + Henry: they don’t really have any purpose in this drama, do they? (And the starlet-with-the-giant-ego side story that’s obviously going to be another loveline is not even remotely interesting.)

Really feeling that the writing is at best mediocre for this drama.

@ alua
I like this drama but will not deny that there are some plot holes. However, I would like to comment about point 3, (due to a lack of time, I'll comment about the others later).

Young-ho probably went for many painful procedures for his cancer when he was young at Daegu. But if I'm not mistaken, he was sent to the US for an op that enabled him to walk. After that, he may have settled in the US and gone for follow-up treatments. The reason why he went to Daegu in this ep was because his leg was giving him a lot of pain which he probably hadn't felt for some time...hence, the visit. He was probably concerned that the cancer might have returned. And this is possible, cause the pain as he found out was psychoneurosis. It happened when he returned to Korea, which does not hold pleasant memories for him...in addition, he found out that his stay was going to be a more permanent one, adding to the stress and unhappiness.

What i find strange is that his step-mum and her brother can actually think that Young-ho's grandmother would give his step-brother a place of position in the company! I'm surprised that they are living in the same house-hold! I'm Asian, but if my daughter has passed away, and my son in law wishes to marry again, I'll tell him to set up his own home. He can still work for me, but his new family is not mine.

Point 5 - Joo-eun probably has other friends, but only one good friend that she is comfortable enough to stay over. In Asia, many adult-children still stay with their parents, so staying with these friends may also not be so comfortable.

As for not staying with her mum - I wouldn't, unless I want to worry her and have a barrage of questions thrown at me...especially those regarding Woo-shik. Her mother would probably say things like, "If you didn't break up with him, this wouldn't have happened", or "you could have stayed with him".

I question that point especially, because I'm having a similar situation (well, no stalker but had to suddenly move out of my place). So I've to deal with 'nowhere-to-stay, who can host me for a couple of a nights till I sort it out'. I've got no family in my country of residence & have been there for six years, with most of my friends being there for the same reason as I – temporary students. Meaning a lot of people I could have asked, have left. But you ask the others (with no expectations of course), because if you're in a desperate situation that's what you do. I'd have no issue if they all turned her down (because it's complicated, I know only too well!), but she called ONE person. I also get not wanting to go to her mother, but she could have asked Woo-shik (yes, I know, pride! but they still did have a 15 year relationship!) or her co-worker that lent her clothes the next day. Or stay in the office one night (I've done that!).

That's why I would have preferred it being 3am or her being phoneless, because then things are a lot more complicated and you have a lot less options.

1

Yes, I think a check for fear that cancer might have returned makes sense. But they should have skipped the doctor saying the cancer being 99.9% cured now, as if they hadn't realised that already. He should have been having regular checkups since childhood (at first every 6 months, then yearly) in any case, so he should be in remission for a decade already... but a sudden "We know now you're 99.9% cured" is odd! But maybe it's a translation thing?

I've skipped most of the chaebol family scenes, they bore me greatly!

If his doctors were all in the US, it might be as simple as the doctor not knowing about his recovery.

I did want to reply to aluna's point #4: I don't think it was one particular thing that made Soo Jin mad. In one of the early episodes they had shown how upset she was over the DJ, and this episode it was this jerk. It seems there were many micro-breaches that made Soo Jin come to resent Joo Eun.

1

yeah, CF starlet loveline has become the part where I fast forward because there's just nothing interesting there. No chemistry, meh acting (otoh imagine how it could have been if that cameo was played by someone like Kim Seul-gi). Get me back to Young-ho and Joo-eun!

I think the blind date guy probably looked harmless and nice to Joo-eun at first - she does mention that she told him about her friend Soo-jin, and his assholery doesn't come out until after he realises he's not going to get Joo-eun. What the Internet calls a 'Nice Guy', so to speak.

And yeah, the jokes about Joo-eun being unrecognisable made me roll my eyes. She obviously still looks the same in the face!

Yes, possible (especially because he might be pretending in front of Joo-eun), but something should have followed that disaster of a date. Joo-eun realising that Soo-jin isn't seeing the guy, Soo-jin breaking down over what happened, or Soo-jin pretending & breaking off her friendship??? I don't know. Ep. 6 makes me even more confused about the whole thing (no spoilers). I just don't get Soo-jin.

For eg, this episode kinda revealed us why Young-ho feels that he has to rescue people in need. When they were wheeling him as a child, to do the procedure at the hospital, he cried out. 'save me' to his dad, but his father was so stone-faced. Perhaps that's why he's always at hand to rescue Joo-eun whenever she cries, 'save me'. Cos no one saved him then, and he knows what's it's like to be helpless and frightened.

That's just two famous examples - I was merely pointing out that people can and do find larger people attractive.

And Adele has been photographed in little to no makeup and still looks gorgeous, sorry to fly in the face of whatever passes for logic with you.

1

Adele without makeup is still so much prettier than, let's say, Rihanna because she's born beautiful to begin with... Besides, talent is so, so HOT by definition!

0

Having a nice face is separate from body type/fat.

And some people do have a preference for larger build persons, whether that be a "fetish" for those who have one on the extreme end.

0

Chubby Joo-eun is still gorgeous.

You might not find someone hot, but I think if you start looking around and you'll find that all kinds of people – thin, fat, gorgeous, ugly, tall, small – are in love with each other.

Look at the top plus-size models (some who really are normal-weight) - they have gorgeous faces.

Just commenting to keep it real as you say, you are probably unaware, but there is a lot of people out there attracted to fat bodies, they even suffer a certain preconception for society and are called deviants and such, all because they are not attracted to the way society defines beauty.

You may align your sexual and beauty preferences with the majority of society in terms of a kind of body (or not? i don't really know you to say), but, keeping it real? that may be the norm but it isn't exclusivity.

Thanks alua, always love your comments because they are often so similar to what I think about the shows. It saves time. :)

1 - Yes, I wish she had been more assertive, I tried to imagine show wasn't using this as a joke but making a criticism at the mentality of the officers and the law.

2- The Venus thing is silly, I disliked when she said they would all be in love with her when she got pretty again. She isn't that superficial so it doesn't match her character. They don't recognizing her is absurd.

3- I get what you said but in this I kind of imagined of crazyajuhmmafan said below so it didn't bother me but yes I agree with you that the writer has some sketches of the past history of these characters, it's a show that you have to help using your imagination to fill the plot holes to make sense. :)

4- It's the date, it's a lot of things probably, there was the radio station guy too. She felt JE was indulging his attentions when she knew SJ liked him, than she believed the jerk when he said JE pitied her and did not have the courage to ask her later because she was afraid of the answer. I'm kind of helping the writing here again. :)

5- She doesn't seem like she has any other close friend, not a person she could call that quickly and sleep in their house. I get why she wouldn't go to her mother's and I thought the brother still lives with their mom. The sheets though, I thought were totally ridiculous. He had plenty of other ways to be nice in that situation. :)

Well, I'm glad someone has similar thoughts because I feel like I'm the only one struggling here with this drama (the leads keep me watching, but I might end up bailing soon).

Re 1– I just wish Young-ho would have said something. Not commenting on happy women but "WTF do you mean 'Why would he stalk someone like you'" because that's the only response that insult from the policeman deserved!!!

Re 3– my imagination is obviously failing, with Soo-jin & Young-ho at least! I can't put my finger on why Young-ho's backstory isn't working for me (not like Jae-Yeol's in That's Okay That's Love did).

Gotta run, soon boarding 14 hour flight back to Europe!

Required fields are marked *

Me too, I'm struggling a bit...I'm here for the leads, they are great together, but the story is too cliche for my taste sometimes: for example, the accidental kiss was totally unnecessary, they jiu-jitsu scene was already hot enough.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I didn't mention the kiss, because I'm so over accidental kisses. I watch them and can only think "That's when they bash their teeth against each other/break their noses". I just can't take them seriously! Agree, the Jiu-jitsu scene tease was all we needed!

0

Yes to everything you pointed out! The leads chemistry is off the charts, but that's about it. I'm so over the misogyny.
Also I had the impression that the show would be more female-centric than how it turned out. Joo-eun's struggles as a law woman who doesn't fit in society's standards is rich enough for a miniseries. Young-ho's chaebolness and backstory is all over the place and that's a shame. I guess that's a given if you cast SJS.
About Soo-jin and Woo-shik going back came as a big surprise. He basically left her for her old friend and didn't bother to mention it at all.

P.s hope you had a safe flight.

I am literally swooning over this actor and savoring just how wonderfully he is portraying the character of John Kim. Gosh, his appeal as an actor and as the character is so damn squeal worthy, so tight, so succinct. The descriptives are many....confident, competent, bold, aloof, cool, secretive, caring, manly, intelligent, protective, serious, strong and yes, I could just go on for days. This actor does not have a pretty boy appeal; its his screen presence that is the magnet that draws one to his strength, power and beauty.
Ok, got to go and watch Episode 5 for the 4th time.

I wuff this drama! And I can't wait for the following questions to be answered:

1. What did Woo-Shik tell Young-Ho at the hospital?!?

2. Does Young-Ho really want to be the head of the company? He seemed to say no and then, maybe. What does he really want to be (or has he been so focused on surving that becoming a doctor/alternative healer and a trainer are just by-products of his struggle to live? Will he start to realize dreams of his own now that he has truly beaten the cancer?

3. Will Eun Joo finally stop being tough and have a good cry? So far she's had thyroid issues, a break-up with a boyfriend of fifteen years, her father's death, a terrible boss, an even more terrible man-stealing-ex-friend boss, and a stalker - and no tears. She's so tough! I can't wait to see what finally cracks her hard outer shell! (And what makes her clam up sometimes and wish for someone to save her - hoping they bridge those two sides of her.)

4. What is the deal with the stalker? Who is he (besides a creepy McCreepy stalker?

5. When will Young-Ho see grandma?

6. Why is dad so mean to BOTH of his kids?

7. When will Young-Ho be a brother to his baby bro? He's already got his family with Korean Snake and Henry, but Baby B is gonna need him! I hope it happens. Bromance and real bro bromance - Daebak!

8. And how does Woo-Shik show up after the police are called for the stalker? Friends on the police force? Hmmm...

I loved this episode! This series is really going beyond my expectations. I hope it keeps up the pace and story. It is kind of a breath of fresh air after watching Birth of a Beauty a few months back. This is handling the overweight issue in a better light (and I hope it stays too). I just wish that people weren't so cruel to overweight Soo Jin and Joo Eun. I hope the misunderstanding between Soo Jin and Joo Eun is corrected soon. I've also been wondering is Soo Jin has residual stretch marks and scars from her weight loss.

This episode had me squee-ing so hard! Jiu jitsu is the best, haha. I like that he took her there to learn self defense. It just turned out horribly. I couldn't stop giggling. I really like that Young Ho is cute with Joo Eun. My favorite thing I think is that he is starting to like her even while she is chubby. I think he may have known who Joo Eun was while she was "Daegu's Venus"

I really wonder the connection the stalker has to Joo Eun! I'm guessing that it was someone who may have really liked her when she was "Daegu's Venus", and just obsessed over her all this time. When Woo Shik broke up with Joo Eun he probably saw it as a chance to sweep up Joo Eun.

I am sooooo glad that Woo Shik is not turning out to be a giant jerk. I mean, he was one for dumping her for another woman, but as big of one as he could have been. He still has lingering feelings for Joo Eun. Fifteen years don't erase that easily.

Thank you for the recap! I enjoy reading it while I'm watching the episode or after :) If lingered and recaps and entries, but this is my first comment. Yay!

@Moondust - I think he 'might' remember her as Daegu's Venus but I'm hoping not because I want him to be interested in her from when she was chubby. I loved it in episode 6 when Henry pounces on Young Ho in his bedroom and Young Ho talks about her cheeks. I feel like he says that stuff about her body to her, so that there's some distance between them, because he's obviously not repulsed by her (from the way he touches her).

Same! I'm hoping he knows there was a "Daegu's Venus", but not know who she was/looked like. I really like that he is starting to like her while chubby! It totally is her personality that he loves. I'm watching episode 6 right now, and that part is one of my favorites! I love how Henry even looked a little bit surprised, haha. I'm glad that they are already starting to like each other and have some skinship.

Does anyone else wonder about how WooShik knows something is happening with Joo Eun? I mean, he's always there watching, as if he's a stalker himself.

Well, he is semi-stalking her. With seemingly good intentions, but still stalking and still neglecting the new girlfriend he dumped her for.

I figured that since Woo Shik and Joo Eun went out for such such a long time, that Woo Shik is Joo Eun's emergency contact (or something akin to this). So perhaps this can explain the hospital and police situations that he knew of :) Other than this idea, I have no clue how he knew everything, haha.

I guess everyone already mentioned that it was secretary min and not the dad in that restaurant... I wonder why he set that up. Was it coincidence or did he want youngho to hear how they were scheming behind grandma's back. What koolaid is stepmom drinking that she thinks grandma is her mother-in-law and her son is grandma's grandson? So the ex mom-in-law of your husband is your mom-in-law too lol grandma should have never let youngho's dad stay... Since it looks like he didn't take care of youngho either. But maybe he was just making youngho stronger in his misdirected way since youngho would be the heir since his mom died. Speaking of youngho, I don't think he's been actively battling the cancer all his life. The doc was only talking about how it didn't recur anywhere. I mean, the reason they cut his leg as a child was to take out the affected portion. And nw with his leg, he actually used his left leg when he bent over that stalker, his injured leg was the right leg... Oh well phantom pain

actually he used his right knee to make the stalker fall down, then the left to pin him down

This show is rather odd for me. It feels rather bland for a rom com. The comedy is pretty mild (nothing has really cracked me up yet) and the plot is of course a bit lack luster and mildly offensive. However, I'm compelled to keep watching this. I think I just love So Ji Sub and Shin Min Ah too much. And whenever they have a flirty scene the chemistry is insane. I'll keep watching this, but I just hope things pick up a bit.

After started watch this, I am starting to care about my health and body as well. yeah, busy life keeps me from practising a healthy life style. Started to be careful of my food's intake, and drink plain water 3 litre daily. It is not easy because I used to take coffee once or twice per day. But I do it little by little. I try to avoid sugar drink. For now, I eat smaller portion of meal. and eat a lot of fruits. After around 2 weeks, I lost around 3kgs. I don't have time to do much exercise, but luckily everyday I am using public transport and I need to walk from station to office and my home.

So guys, lets start our healthy lifestyle from now. Maybe after this end, we can get our ideal weight and be healthier :)

I cannot hire coach like SJS, so I will just dreaming having a session with him. lol :P

:P cheers to you and your comment :)
I found myself feeling the same way as Shin Min Ah's character a few years back and I hired a trainer…an older white dude…HAHAHA, nothing like SJS :) and all the steps you listed are a huge improvement on ur daily life. I did weight training and in 6 months lost 40 lbs. When she was walking up the stairs in PAIN, I knew exactly what that felt like!!!
The best tip is 8 cups of water a day and have 6 small meals a day.

Enjoying this drama so much!

I am also found myself similar to Shin Min Ah's character, and I am also a lawyer. Aha. Few years back, I always in hectic life, especially not taking the right portion of meals, always skipping breakfast. Now, i can breathe a little (actually much) since i became in house lawyer, and working in a corporation. Much better, because I have time for myself. Now it is time to redeem my body and health again, I am not 30 yet, and I can't make my body becoming older than my age.

This drama is spreading the positive vibe for us to practise healthy lifestyle. :D

hearing you on this one, I have a lover- Sera LMIYD. What better way to start off or persist in lifestyle change than imagining SJS also nagging you?! Carry him with you always. It would be fantastic to hear from anyone who went on a fitness regimen while watching this drama and shout their weight loss. Way to go show!

I can sense they are also veering into the domestic violence issue. That scene at the police station was quite surreal, but i guess that could be true. Women's desks are the way to go.

Writer-nim, just don't load up on the issues or they get lost in the translation. Stay rom-com.
