Drama viewership ratings for the week of Jan. 11-17, 2016

We had a couple noteworthy moments this past week’s drama ratings, and starting backwards (because why not?), we have to look at Answer Me 1988 ending its massively popular run with an all-time high in many rights: It was a high for the drama, going out with an 18.803%, and also a high for the Answer Me franchise, which has logged higher numbers with every season, on top of being a high for its cable station tvN. Actually, scratch that: It was an all-time high for cable TV, period. At this rate they’ll keep churning ’em out till we’re in Answer Me 1490: Husband Hunting in Joseon. (I would watch the hell out of that, by the way, even if I’m so over husband hunting I could never see it again and still think we’d had too much.)

Backing up some more to Wednesdays and Thursdays, Remember—Son’s War continues solidifying its lead, fueled by Yoo Seung-ho’s tears (and Namgoong Min’s rage—ahhh, how awesome is his rage? I mean, terrible for everyone in the show, naturally, but so, so entertaining to watch as a viewer).

And over on Mondays and Tuesdays, Cheese in the Trap is gathering steam, which I totally understand because the show has got me hook-line-sinkered. Super-addictive stuff, it is! That’s probably bad news for Moorim School, which premiered on broadcast TV to numbers lower than cable, dropping a few points from its predecessor, Oh My Venus. The reviews seem mixed, but it’s got a fun fantasy premise for fans of genre youth dramas; sadly for its ratings, though, a lot of the young demographic will be glued to their Cheese, while their parents are firmly in the Six Flying Dragons camp, which is holding steady in the lead.

Woohoo Answer Me! And I second you on the whole reply 1490 thing lol. Also, I heard there was talks for a Answer me 2002, and that would be great considering everything that happened that year!

I feel so bad for moorim lol but i think they expected this turnout anyway. It's getting some online buzz at least. Thanks to that funny fried food scene.

Their official instagram account even posts about re-runs to encourage people to watch.

Ahhh and KBS posting a Shiwoo/Chiang bromance edit i cry it's so good. I wish it was subbed so more poeple understood https://twitter.com/mylovekbs/status/688216641587396609

So many people loving Moorim's OST at least. First song "Hey Girl" will be released on the 18th.

Is that a return of the real site or a fake site, cause the original .se site disappeared?

On topic - Moorim School is in trouble, because it just doesn't fully accomplish it's goals. I can soldier through most dramas, but Moorim put me to sleep. Perhaps, they should have started with a compelling back story, instead of dropping us right into the middle of things.

The hate between the male leads, doesn't even make sense that they would have that strong of animosity towards each other, over a hotel room.

A school with equal number of students and teachers, or at least feels that way. Couldn't they at least hire extras. Which goes to another issue, the drama feels low budget and is another youth oriented fail for KBS.

This drama would have done better with a better director, better writer, and maybe on tVN.

Answer Me 1988 became an WALL and my guess is that mostly everyone will look and wait to see if the writer plans another installment if yes(hope so) if they can beat their own record(if yes please make Mi Ran Omma star as a mom again, want more of her)...I'm quite happy, the most among the shows for Remember—Son’s War,quite happy as the show is going strong, getting better and better and because of Yoo Seung Ho&Nam Gong Min,maybe because i watch them so i feel more attached to them...Also happy for Cheese in the Trap climbing those digits..Now that Reply '88 ended i strangly feel kinda empty, knowing that when Friday comes i won't get my dose of it,but hey i'm eager for Signal as well

I wonder if anything can beat the Reply ratings other than the next Reply. Even looking at super popular shows like Misaeng, the ratings only reached about 8%. Reply is truly in a class of its own.

I think if it did multiple seasons yes. Like Misaeng's second season might be a rating hit if they did do it. Remember when Reply 1997 first season barely did around 3 to 4 %. They built that fan base and reputation so if a show's getting better every season then why not?

I think Reply 1997 hit more than 7%, the last episode record more than 10%. Its the first cable drama that break viewership records.

I agree, you need to slowly build the fan base and reputation, so I'm actually quite hopeful that Misaeng 2 will be successful, if they decide to film a season 2.

Required fields are marked *

Besides, the bulk of Misaeng's first 5 episodes were a little slow-paced because it was spent developing the characters, so I'm pretty sure with a season 2, the pace would pick up right from the first episode, and the ratings would start off strong as well.

yeah, each successive series of Answer Me has had the benefit of its predecessors' reputations behind it, which contributed to the curiosity.

1997 was the real dark horse - people thought it would be some quickly-forgotten idol drama, but it was THE game-changer for cable, which is why even if the later series' ratings are higher, 1997 is still legendary. I mean, in 2012 a cable show breaking even 1 percent was considered successful, forget having peak ratings of close to 10 percent!

Required fields are marked *

also, Answer Me 1997 aired on Tuesdays - the other high-rated tvN dramas - Misaeng, Ghostess, Twenty Again - up to now have all come from the weekend slot they established for Answer Me 1994.

(weekday drama ratings tend to be lower by default of having more competition from other prime time shows/Big 3). So yeah, the fact that 1997 got that far is kind of astonishing.

Cheese is a really good and I expect the ratings to go upwards and break 10%.

I wonder how Signal will fare next week it has heavy hitters Kim Hye Soo and Lee Jae Hoon.

Misaeng et al have had only one season, let's not underestimate the effects of the previous Answer Me installment/s on the buzz surrounding the current ones.

1997 of course is the exception, since it had to establish its own rep, had no big-name cast members and wasn't an adaptation of anything popular.

Always good to hear current shows beating out the old. It's really hard these days. Maybe the next Answer Me might break 20%.

Although I haven't seen any of it. It sounds like a good series for new and under-rated actors to be noticed. Jung Woo was pretty good before joining the series but he is as popular as ever now.

SFD and Dazzling Temptation got a boost in ratings after Oh My Venus ended.

Jung Woo is actually way better than most Answer Me alums, along with Kim Sung-gyun, Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa. But they have been able to get a lot out of limited people in the past (Go Ara was legitimately good in 94, for instance). The cast this time was pretty underwhelming, though. :(

Cheese in the Trap is a Monday-Tuesday drama, the ratings for those are usually lower on tvN than for their weekend slot smash hits. But 5 percent on a weekday is fantastic.

SO can we get a wife hunt this time? All 3 reply series was about the husband lets make a change and keep it fresh. And I have a rule for the writer no more love triangles no more please I beg of you. I'm tried of fandom fights. Things got so bad this time ppl are bashing taek and poor park bogum. Seriously just stop. As for cheese I think its got a decent chance of getting and hitting 10% or doing the same numbers as ghostess.

i'd love that if it can be done in an enticing way!! most triangle involving 2 women/1 man were downright horrible... I just dont know if it will have the same appeal... not to mention reply series in general have more main male characters than female ones. In any case, even if its not a wife game, i'd like to have a gang where the majority of the friends are women!!!

Required fields are marked *

I think triangles with women could be nice if they are done right but most people write women as chatty and bitchy especially if they're pursuing the same guy. Its even tragic when woman writers themselves write them like that which is not true women can be just as funny, loving and noble as the guys in a triangle. Heck I think it could be so refreshing and a nice change of pace.

One of the biggest issues of K-Drama is when 2 guys pursue the same girl, most of the time both of them 'can be perceived' as nice guys or jerk with a heart of gold (i hate this trope btw). But if it's two girls and a guy, one of them will be super nice and the other is a total evil b*tch (just pick any K-Drama for an example).

So yeah it would be really refreshing to have 2 girls in love with the same guy and not have one of them being 'bitchy'. However, two "nice girls" will be considered boring. But if one of them just strays a little bit outside the norm of "niceness" in K-Drama, she will get bashed real quick. And just imagine the ship wars that'll definitely happen. It would make the ship wars of previous Answer Me installments pale in comparison.

Personally, the first reply (97) will always be my favorite and this recent one my least of the three but thats just my personal preference. Sometimes wonder if the ratings would be the same if 97 was the third installment or like the order of the shows switched. But as a franchise, I have to say, the Reply series knows how to tell a heartwarming story and create those moments and laughter like no other and that is why they are so marketable and the ratings keep increasing as more people hear word of it.

Although '97 is also my favorite still (who can forget their first time?), '88 definitely trumped '94 for me. The family drama aspect was so good that I found myself not particularily fussed over which one of the boys was the husband. I ended up cheering for both and foremost cheering for the neighborhood. Bora and her dad are one of my favorite drama pairings of all time. Their relationship was so vivid and realistic.

Wow, with Answer Me's final ratings I don't think tvN will see ratings that high for any of their shows for a while (unless they make another spin-off, since only the AM series are able to draw in the masses).

Cheese in the Trap is growing in viewership quite nicely.

Moorim School is plain ridiculous (I'm not saying it's bad though), so I do think it won't go over 5% ever again. But it's strangely addicting and the main girl is hilarious.

What's notable is that going by the average ratings (not peak), Cheese in the Trap (11 pm) already zoomed by Answer Me, 1997 (11 pm) and Secret Love Affair (9:50 pm). Maybe, if Cheese keeps on moving up, we can say for sure that it is the highest-rated weekday cable drama ever.

I wish the next installation of Answer Me would give us 2 different endings instead of the sadistic one, so both husband-to-be teams would be satisfied and fanwars could be diverted. You hear me Show?

And it would increase the ratings too.

Actually with the high popularity of the cast, it would be difficult since they will be looking for their next project. Plus I just read that news of the team releasing two different ending is a hoax, since they got no time. It's actually makes sense since the wedding scene was shot near the final episode. I'm actually curious about the deleted scenes, and hope they will release that ><

well, im starting on how disappointed i was on reply 1988. it was gong well since it has a bit different style and extended airing time, however too much focus on the other characters that the central story and characters were not addressed sooner. At the end, it felt like they just wrapped it up in an instant. the ending was lame and disappointing too. (all in comparison to 97 and 94.)

still, I'm happy for the franchise, its not easy to reach expectations and top the ratings of the previous one.

Watching cheese in the trap too! hoping it gets the same popularity!!

AM Joseon, lol

I recall reading comments lamenting Hyeri' s casting. I thought she did a wonderful job as Dorky Duk Seon.

The female leads in the AM have been blessed with those roles.

Seo In-gook & Jung Eun Ji are still my favorite AM series OTP. Had to watch their water fountain kiss scene again, lol.
