Drama viewership ratings for the week of Jan. 18-24, 2016

It’s cable’s week again, at least as far as premieres are concerned. Three new shows premiered on all three major cable networks this week, to mixed results—as far as numbers are concerned, anyway. But isn’t that how it always goes?

Signal, which was lucky to take over the winning slot Answer Me 1988 both carved out and left behind, did surprisingly well for its premiere by pulling in a little over 5%. Episode 2 was going to be the deciding factor, since it was up in the air as to whether the audience that loved Answer Me’s husband hunting shenanigans would stick around for the much more serious affair that comes with a Memories of Murder adaptation. (Which was also based on real-life murders.) And not only did the audience stick around, it grew—Signal finished out opening week with 6%. Pretty good, if you ask me.

Not all cable news is good news, of course—Madam Antoine over on JTBC scored under 1% for both episodes, which are disappointing numbers any way you slice them. Six Flying Dragons continued to dominate its Monday-Tuesday timeslot, followed closely behind by Dazzling Temptation. And Cheese in the Trap is scoring better numbers on cable than poor Moorim School is on KBS. The times, they are a-changin’.

Is it possible to have the times added, not just the day of the week, so we know which dramas are going head yo head.

thank you

About the actual dramas:

Moorim School - had a disastrous first episode and second episode that failed to connect with the viewers, versus Cheese in The Trap that started strong out of the gate. Both are youth dramas and it's clear why one is doing better than the other. It's not even an idol backlash in this instance, it's that the writers and director did a bad job setting up the background story of Moorim School and we were dropped right into a rivalry we don't really know or care about.

Six Flying Dragons and Master of Trade-Inn - show why more and more viewers are gravitating to other Asian historical dramas. Six Flying Dragons takes itself way too seriously, and ends up in boredom land, instead of the intrigue they are going for. And this is not a case of the audience just wanting a romance Sageuk - the popularity of Nirvana in the Fire, though it barely had any romance scenes, shows that audiences are okay with that, if the plot is interesting enough. Ditto Master of TI, which banks on JHS to bring another Chuno like success, but is failing to connect with the audience, perhaps because the drama can't decide if it wants to be a Sageuk or a Makjang drama.

Madame Antoine is in trouble, when even Neighborhood Hero can pull better numbers, yikes. I think while the promo pictures were pretty and cool, they didn't exactly sell the premise of the show, and there were probably many people who didn't bother to check it out, because they don't even know what the drama is about.

I have to disagree.
Six Flying Dragon is faaaaaaaarrrrr away from being boring. Many international audience ahoy the drama, as for the domestic itself the rating shows it's doing well and even better than makjang drama Dazzling Temptation (makjang usually has good rating, not always, but normally). Boring sageuk is Secret Door, I can even sleep while watching it. Meanwhile, SFD takes viewers into parallel drama world which connects to Deep rooted Tree and Queen Soendeok. But again we don't have to watch the two to understand SFD.

Btw Moorim has bad rating, but it doesn't have anything to do with Cheese in the trap. Why? Because Cheese starts at 11pm while Moorim finishes at 11 pm. So it's correct to say that Moorim loses to SFD and Dazzling Temptation.

Wolediran~

Funny you should mention Six Flying Dragons, Master of Trade In and Nirvana In Fire. I dropped both SFD and MOTI in order to complete NIF , watching 40 + episodes in a few days.

After completing NIF, the other two shows just didn't hold my interest any longer . No comparison in quality.

Moorim School: Avoid it like the plague, not for me.

Dazzling Temptation: So crazy, it's absurd, but I tune in to watch and laugh anyways. MST3K worthy.

CITT: I'm curious to see how it ends up, it has enough of the right stuff to catch my interest. Good casting helps. Suzy would have sunk this drama.

Madame Antoine: Haven't watched it yet.

Signal: Liked the 1st episode , need to finish the 2nd as I fell asleep, not any fault of the show. Had a X-files feel sort of, they need a musical hook during the paranormal stuff.

X-Files returns tonight! Hope it doesn't stink.

Six Flying Dragons isn't boring at all. If one likes only empty action stuff with a lot of battles, then one may not like it. So the show is not to be blamed if one can't deal with gravitas or thoughtful stories.

I had hoped Jang Yeongsil would have more seriousness and show us all kinds of technical stuff about how stuff got invented and how the worldview affected inventions. It does that, yes. But not enough. It is also doing the same old bad sageuk stuff (evil entitled lords etc) which is a mistake I think. Swashbucklery slave entitled lord stuff makes it like all the other sageuks and makes it not my cup of tea. But even then I wouldn't call it boring. Predictable perhaps but not boring. I'd welcome some more seriousness.

I'm sorry to hear Jang Young-shil is going the action over ideas route. It sounded like it had potential. I agree on SFD - I love the complex characters combined with careful plotting.

While I enjoyed Nirvana in Fire, I found it less emotionally engaging. I'm not entirely sure why - maybe it was the more fantasy-based elements that crept in towards the end - snow beetles, really? - or the fact that I never felt fully connected to the elaborate back story. It also seemed to wrap up a little too neatly - I wanted a more messiness and ambiguity. It's quite well done but it left me a bit cold.

Yes, I had to stop watching Nirvana in Fire as well. It was pretty but somehow distant.

Six Flying Dragons was NEVER promoted as a romance sageuk so idk where your getting that from. It was always promoted as a political sageuk with the leads being Yi Bang Won and Jang Do Jeon and there fight for Joseon.

If you watched any of the writer and director pairs previous dramas than you would know how the tone and feel of all three dramas- SFD, Tree with deep roots and Queen Seon Dok- are all very similar.

SFD is far from being a snooze rest and the ratings show that. It's critically acclaimed and every episode and every reveals out dos the next.

Did you watch all the episodes to make such criticism?

No surprise that Cheese in the Trap is faring better than Moorim School – the latter feels low-budget & as if written by a rookie (I don't know whether it actually is or not) and, despite its potential, is just all over the place. Plus mostly very green actors. CITT is simply the better written, better directed, better produced, better acted drama.

Are you in my head, lol. You just said the same thing I was typing up, at the same time :D

Seriously, as a long time drama fan, I wanted Moorim School to do well, because at least it's somewhat of a different, and KBS is trying their darnedest to promote youth dramas. But Moorim School suffers from being badly written and badly cast, and can't even use the huge budget of say a "Heirs" to razzle dazzle the audience. So what you have is a drama that consists of a handful of students, roaming about a sound stage, pretending they are at the Korean Hogwarts. SMH.

I'm astonished Moorim School is this bad even with its supposed pre-production (I believe they started filming in September) and all the hype beforehand about how it was going to be a game-changer - that gave me the impression KBS was actually going to give this a decent budget so it wouldn't look as half-assed/cheesy as it does. But even pre-production doesn't cover for serious acting weaknesses or a poor script.

I kinda feel bad for Lee Hyun Woo. He's a great actor and I love him in the last drama I saw him in (Three Musketeers). He's doing a good job here in Moorim School, but I wished they did a better job with the production of the drama. The script is interesting (to me) but I kinda wish they executed it better and have better actors (I don't find the lead girl and the second lead male that convincing... But maybe it's just my opinion).

The viewers have spoken! They are tired of badly scripted dramas using the same old storylines. The cable networks, especially TVn have that their writers are better and the directing too. In addition, in dramas like the Reply series, it has shown that they can take unknown or relatively unknown actors and idols and bring them to heights of stardom.

I honestly have not watched a lot of the main Korean channel dramas in the last year, and it was pretty slim pickings for me until the latter half of the year. Oh My Ghostess, Bubblegum, Answer Me and CITT have been my favorites out of the very few dramas that I've managed to watch, and i believe it's not a coincidence that they are all from tVN. I love how they constantly try to churn out unique dramas and storylines, even if plot lines sound familiar they are always given with a fresh twist or a more realistic, slice of life approach. Love it.

yeah I think the korean viewers like the drama a lot more than international ones... Tbh I was actually quite surprised it reached 16.6% because that's pretty damn high for a drama with a plot that's kinda unstable(?), I mean I'm happy for them but still surprised lol.

It's the same for pretty much all revenge-based dramas. It's hard to find one that's really good. But even though they're bad, they still get like high ratings. Like I'm still completely in utter shock as to how Yongpal got over 20% in ratings... Idk I guess this is where we korean viewers and international viewers differ.

I've watched most of both MA episodes now. It's okay. Sung Joon's character being a jerk is a bit old and I sort of tune out when he starts talking about the psychology of anything... b/c he sounds like a big bullshitter (for the most part).

I think the set up is a bit contrived (how they end up working together), though I guess that doesn't matter too much. I kind of wish Hye Rim truly had spiritual abilities because that would be a whole lot more fun. Or if they exaggerated her "attentiveness" (I watched "Criminologist Himura and Mystery Writer Arisugawa" last night, where the criminologist has the same kind of "attention to detail" skill but he actual comes across as if he could mind-read or see things that are impossible to see).

I hope Soo-hyun falls HARD and that meanwhile Hye Rim milks her three suitors for triple what they are worth. Yeah, I totally want all the guys to fail at the game they are playing b/c I just can't stand when people self-righteously use others like that.

funny enough (and OT), I wish Yoo Jung had the same abilities (like, he can read people's mind or something) to make Cheese in the Trap more interesting. We can say its decent when Signal got 5.4 % and 6.9 %. OCN dramas before like Bad Guys, Vampire Detective, Detective Cheo Yong had better results before.

With cable dramas get more recognations from viewers recently, if the ratings are above 4 or 5 % thats mean its success. Take a look CITT, Signal, Answer Me 1988, Oh My Ghost, Twenty Again, Secret Love Affair.

I've seen the latest episodes for Moorim and I always get that feeling of dropping off a cliff in a middle of conversation. It's like the director isn't on set and everyone just let the actors and drama direct itself. Which is really not a good idea since majority of the cast in this drama are newbies. I really wish the production company and writer of the drama would come to their senses cuz the general plot and setting of this drama is like my catnip.

For Madam Antoine, I found it pretty entertaining and enjoyable enough (though my judgement can be contested due to lack of sleep when I watched this and my bias towards any psychological references). But I do think it is rather un-unique compared to other dramas that premiered lately.

I am really looking forward to how One more Happy Ending would progress. I like the insight they gave to us on how/why Jang Nara's previous marriage failed. In Kdramas, its rather easy to blame everything on the husband, but here we are told that the problem was on both sides. Icing on the cake would be our heroines in their Girl Group Get-ups and drunk!Aegyo Jang Nara is the cherry. XD

Overall, I am really happy with the premieres this year.

Moorim school on the other hand I find extremely refreshing and fun, the choppy acting aside, a martial arts school hidden behind a magic barrier in the forest? What's not to like?
And as for Madame Antoinette, I ha no idea about the show before I watched it, but I quote enjoyed the premise and the character, especially the lead female, and think the plot holds much potential (even if no basis in reality)
I'm also liking One more happy ending but notice it's not gotten great ratings either.
I guess it just isn't the reason for romcoms? Is the cold wave making everyone turn to bleak and action filled drama instead?

I think maybe the international viewers have lower expectations of Moorim School. Like, I look at it and think it's like some low budget ABC Family cable show and as long as it's better than Shadowhunters, I'm ok with it.

Poor Sung Joon, his career is gonna be dead unless Madame Antoine rebounds. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that show would pull in less than 1%. Han Ye Seul is very cool and I figured that even though he keeps picking terrible work, if she was in on it then it would be decent. I had some issues with the first two episodes - primarily that his "experiments" actually DO violate ethical research guidelines but aside from that the way the two of them psychologically battled with her getting into the cracks in his psyche before he got into hers? That I enjoyed.

I just hope this isn't Jang Nara's second drama in a row where the show is quite interesting but the ratings were mediocre. I Remember You also had bad ratings.

As i remember Mr Back had solid ratings though a lot of that was off the first episode of 10% that was something of a record. I think the other two big networks covered some event and put the normal drama on hold so Mr Back had a free run, still the ratings where pretty good for drama these days, so even though one may or may not think the drama was dismal the rating where not. Unlike say I Remember you that most though a very good drama but had poor ratings, that may or may not have to do with the time slot, that seems to be a black hole for that network for a long time now. These days 5% is not 'that' bad I mean anything over 10% is a hit drama now, the days of trying to get a 20% plus is pretty much a dream. It Happy Ending is also up against two big drama one a big budget historical drama the other the big hit show running along at 15% , so for me that makes a 5% even more a respectable number for a first episode

Love One More Happy Ending. It have a similar vibe with Dal Ja's spring, probably because the setting is about woman in 30's. It's funny, cute, and contemplative in the same time and make me care about the character.

So far, the show that I follow closely is this and Cheese in the Trap.

Aw man. One More Happy Ending has some tough competition in its timeslot. But that's understandable considering the other two dramas.

I hope OMHE gets some more viewers though. I'm liking the funny and cute show. Jang Nara and Jung Kyung Ho are awesome. :D

I think the word of mouth will get around and elevate the ratings.

I enjoyed Madam Antoine. I wouldn't award it my own personal Emmy but the acting and writing were fine. I certainly think that it deserves better that 1%.

I MUST Watch Signal and I feel that the main character the guy is way over acting. They try too hard to make you feel the tense moment which makes the drama in over acting irritating not gonna watch again switch the channel moment. On the side I feel Jang Youngsil shd be on the weekdays time slot to get higher ratings.I really like it way better than Six Flying Dragons. And they she have made it longer than 24 episodes.

TvN is hitting it out of the park. Good on them. They are willing to take a lot more risks and their ratings are showing that.

I'm watching Moorim because of Lee Hyun Woo..He and the actress playing Seonduk are good, while the two second leads, especially Hongbin, lack on emotion. He can't express the right emotion well, and I find his smile unnatural.

I'm only watching Cheese in the trap and it's really good for a romance. It's been a while since I liked so much a light drama.

Moorim is almost painful to watch. It looks like a high school play put on by bad actors. Neighborhood Hero had a great start, I hope people start paying attention to it.
