Kim Rae-won, Han Seok-kyu team up for undercover thriller The Prison

Well whatever this movie is, it’s sure to be well-acted. Kim Rae-won (Punch) will be returning to the big screen this year, in a role as a detective who goes undercover as a criminal. But he’s got such a good-guy face! He’ll be starring opposite veteran Han Seok-kyu (Secret Door) in the new film The Prison, about a cop who goes to prison to get justice for his sibling’s death. Hm, justice or revenge?

The two actors have been confirmed for the project from director Na Hyun, which began test shoots with them on January 27. Kim Rae-won will play the detective who loses a younger sibling to a crime, and then in order to get to the truth of the case, he’ll enter a prison as a convict. I’m curious about whether he goes undercover in a sanctioned operation, or actually goes rogue and commits a crime to get himself in there.

Han Seok-kyu will play a convict known as the king among the inmates (ha, even in prison Han Seok-kyu is king). Because of some sort of deal he has with high-ranking government officials, he basically gets to act as the king of the prison and has the run of the land. The movie will be about Kim Rae-won going undercover and approaching Han Seok-kyu, the prison king.

Apparently the two actors are friendly because they’re fishing buddies, so they ought to have great chemistry even as rivals or enemies. Do you suppose they spend hours sitting by the lake pontificating about Theater and Art? I never really thought of Kim Rae-won as geeky, but yunno, it kinda suits him. I hope they own matching floppy hats.

The Prison starts shooting in February for a release later this year.

Interesting. Sure, Kim Rae Won seems like a down-to-earth good guy. But when you think of his early films like Sunflower and Mr Socrates, you can have no doubts he can be the toughest guy ever (with or without a heart of gold - depends on the role). Looking forward to this one!

Even in Punch I found him absolutely despicable at times.

Yeah there were times in Punch when I just wanted to punch his face. I would say he's very versatile, he does well in both protagonist and antagonist roles

As much as I have liked KRW's film work, HSK is one of the top 3-4 actors in Korea.
