News bites: January 31, 2016

Ryu Joon-yeol, Park Hyung-shik

  • Ryu Joon-yeol has a nice welcome-home gift in store for him upon his return to Korea from filming Youths Over Flowers. Tickets for his first-ever fan meeting will be released on February 2 (the day the Youths cast gets back) at 2pm, and a ticketing war is expected to break out. The meeting will be held at 7pm on April 2 at Yonsei University’s auditorium, where he’s expected to meet with 1,500 (lucky!) fans. [My Daily]
  • Park Hyung-shik of ZE:A (High Society) is returning to the stage with the musical Three Musketeers, which will run at D-Cube City in Sindorim from April 1 to June 26. Park has appeared steadily in musicals since 2011, and this will be his second time participating in Three Musketeers — he was in the 2013 run. [Osen]

  • Shin Ha-kyun, Lee Sung-min

  • This is a bummer, but fortunately both have other projects lined up and we won’t have to wait long to see them again. Shin Ha-kyun (Mr. Back) and Lee Sung-min (Hwajung) have quit Baram Baram Baram, a movie about two families and finding love on Jeju Island. The comedy will be helmed by Jang Gyu-sung (I Am the King) and production is preparing to move forward with a new cast. Shin will be in Pied Piper following Cheese in the Trap on tvN, while Lee Sung-min’s film Robot, Sori just premiered, and he’ll headline tvN drama Memory, which follows Signal and also premieres in March. Lee’s been busy — A Violent Prosecutor hits theaters next week, and Real should be released in the latter half of the year. [Star News]
  • I hope this takes some of the sting out of Song Il-gook’s departure (Dae-han Min-guk Man-se!) from Superman Returns. He and his adorable brood will be replaced by Lee Beom-soo (Last), his translator wife, and their son and daughter. Their segments for the variety show will be filmed just before Lunar New Year. [Joongang]

  • Lee Yo-won, Yoon Sang-hyun, Kim Sun-young

  • Ms. Temper and Nam Jung-ki has confirmed Lee Yo-won (Empire of Gold) as its hothead and Yoon Sang-hyun (Gap-dong) as her meek male counterpart. Joining them in an unspecified role is Kim Sun-young (Sun-woo’s mom in Answer Me 1988), and the Friday-Saturday drama will follow Madam Antoine on JTBC. [Osen]
  • Choi Sung-won (No-eul in Answer Me 1988) is confirmed for the movie The Prison, where he’ll play a character important to the story. Kim Rae-won plays a prosecutor, while Han Seok-kyu is a jailed convict who makes deals with high-ranking government officials and essentially runs the whole prison from the inside. The film comes from Na Hyun (South Bound, My Way), and will be the writer/director’s first commercial work. Funded and distributed by Showbox, cameras on The Prison begin rolling in mid-February. [TV Report]

  • Jung Jae-young, Kim Min-hee

  • They must have really enjoyed working together on Right Now, Wrong Then, because less than a year later, Kim Min-hee and Jung Jae-young have reunited with director Hong Sang-soo for his latest, untitled project. Filming has already begun in Gangwon province, and while there’s no information on the title or story (as is common for director Hong), joining Kim and Jung are Kim Joo-hyuk (Like Me, Gu-am Heo Jun) and Lee Yoo-young (Fatal Intuition). [Dong A]
  • Jackpot has added Ji Il-joo (Neighborhood Hero, Healer) as a faithful royal bodyguard who’s a talented martial artist and highly competitive. He’s described as coolheaded, but also warm and honest to a fault. He’ll develop feelings for the girl out to kill the king (an offer is out to Im Ji-yeon), just sliiightly problematic when his job is to protect the royal family. Jackpot will be directed by Nam Gun (Mask) and written by Kwon Soon-gyu (Warrier Baek Dong-soo). Filming begins early next month, and the show will air on Mondays and Tuesdays following Six Flying Dragons in March. [DongA]

Am looking forward to Jackpot. Loved Im Ji Yeon in High Society which I enjoyed(yeah,I said it *dodges from stones*). I'll admit that it had a lot of potential that was woefuly underutilized and everything got messy and some storylines were left unresolved(I was particularly interested in chaebol dad and mom's storyline). But I enjoyed it for what its worth. Hope Im Ji Yeon's role is well written and it doesn't end like WBDS.

Yeah, the end of WBDS still makes me mad to think about. I loved most of it, but that end just ruined it. Oh well, I'm hoping for better things in Jackpot.

Really excited for Ms. Temper and Nam Jungki. Seems like we wouldn't need to worry about the acting. Hope it'll give us good story.

I love Kim Min-hee, she's been doing quite a bit lately and the repeat of her + Jung Jae-young sounds ideal.

I'm looking forward to the Fingersmith adaptation, but I'm sad Ant Hell never panned out, her + Kang Dong-won was an onscreen pairing (romantic or otherwise) that I really wanted to see.

Park Chan Wook's Fingersmith has been on my watch list since last year. Park may change the history but some contents of the book might be a bit controversial.

I love the cast, Ha Jung Woo and Jo Jin Woong. The ladies are no strangers to playing this kind of roles, Kim Min-Hee and Moon So-ri.

Park Chan Wook and Bong Joon-Ho usually write/produce and direct their films. I'm always looking forward to their projects because they are not your typical blockbuster directors, they stood out in the critical acclaim department.

I watched RNWT and I can say I was more interested with Kim Min Hee than Jung Jae Young. She just has this kind of charm that pulls you inwhenever her character talks.
If JJY-KMH reunited again in Hong director's newest movie, who would be the lead? Kim Joo Hyuk or Jung Jae Young?

My mom, who knows nothing about k-entertainment, called me up one day to tell me about these adorable Korean triplets and their precious father that she had seen on some American TV show-- of course it turned out to be Song Il-gook + Dae-han Min-guk Man-se! She was amused that I knew right off the bat who she was talking about. Yes, that brood will be sorely missed, but Lee Beom-soo & co will most likely be awesome too.

Thanks, awcoconuts. Btw, it won't be January 31st until tomorrow. (I often get dates mixed up, too.) ?

Nope, it doesn't make the pain easier or make the sting feel better.... I'm still going to miss the three little ones miserably (I'll probably spend a chunk of time re-watching all their episodes), and the sting still feels painful T............T

But welcome to the Superman Family, Lee Beom Soo and family!!! Also, belated WELCOME to Eugene, Ki Tae Young, and little Ro Hee <3

I wonder how long it's going to take before this new set of Reply actors fade into irrelevancy?

I'll give them a solid six months for people to get over the hype and stop caring.

LMAO..umm...sorry my comment hit a sore spot. It's not like I'm disparaging/calling into question these actor's talents, but literally no Reply actor/actress from 1997/1994 has been able to live up to the hype or maintain their relevancy or popularity after the series finished.

Actually, that's generally how most celebs careers go after hitting a huge peak unless they are able to maintain the momentum. The entertainment industry is incredibly fickle. Like...are you new?

Eh - depends on what one is expecting.

Not many actors get to play a major role in one big hit and it's even harder to have 2 big hit projects (due to the dearth of quality scripts).

While maybe not having yet had another major hit (even for the 1997 gang, it's on;y been about 4 yrs so there's still plenty of time), many of the cast members from 1997 and the successive series have seen their careers elevated.

Before 1997, Seo In-guk was struggling in the Korean entertainment biz, since 1997, he has gone to star in a # of other K-dramas and even a film.

Jung Eun-ji and Hoya were total newbies to the acting thing and they have gone on to getting regular work as actors.

While 1994 had some more established cast members, Yoo Yeon-seok went from supporting roles/2nd lead to leading roles in both TV and film and Go Ara's acting career, which had been on life support, was rejuvenated.

1994 basically launched the acting careers of Son Ho-jun, Min Do-hee and Baro (all being acting in either K-dramas and/or films).

SHJ, like SIG, struggled for a decade in the entertainment biz, barely surviving (having to make 4 meals out of one package of ramyun and rice).

Since 1994, SHJ can afford much better meals and has moved into a much better abode.

Figure the same will Ryu Jun-yeol; Hyeri is making so much $$ off of her popularity as the new "CF Queen" that she is now one of the highest earning female K-celeb.

And let's not forget Sung Dong-il who had spent his career as a character actor, but w/ his newfound fame and popularity (he and Lee Il-hwa have at least been on numerous hits just from the AM/Reply series), has now been able to get beefier role, including co-starring in a film w/ Kwon Sang-woo.

I dont know what to feel about another Jung Jae Young and Director Hong collab. I like JJY and was happy he got various awards for his role in RNWT, but i just couldnt understand the artistry level of Director Hong Movie. I remember it also baffled me when Our Sunhi was popular in award circuit for its direction.
Since he worked a lot with actor that i like (JJY was also on Our Sunhi) i really want to enjoy the movies, i am usually amused by the writing and acting, but i just could never used to static camera and single angle take, i guess they are just way ahead of my pedestrian level as a movie audience...

As much as I absolutely love, love, love Daehan Minguk and Manse, for their sakes I am glad of their decision to quit the show 'Superman Returns'. It is getting to the time where they could become self conscious about being followed around by cameras and teased by their class mates in school.

Yeah, what in the world? Since when does an actor have to be single/childless in real life to portray a single woman? That makes zero sense. Would you say the same thing about a man with children?
