Sparks fly (literally) in Descended From the Sun’s main poster

Finally, we have the main poster for KBS’s large-scale war romance melodrama Descended From the Sun, featuring its two stars, Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-gyo, playing an elite soldier and a doctor, respectively.

I feel like we’ve been hearing about this drama foreeeeeeever, but it’s only just now approaching premiere date (sorta — three more weeks to go). I suppose this is the most obvious downside to dramas going pre-produced, because we hear about these plots and get all excited, but the excitement fades the longer we have to wait to see it, and sometimes the buzz train gets missed. Not that this buzz train is getting missed. I’m pretty sure it’s just getting started. All aboard!

(I’m still for more productions trying for full pre-production, though, which means 2016 will be a big year in that realm, with a bunch of high-profile projects going that route, like Lee Young-ae’s Saimdang, Lee Jun-ki and IU’s Scarlet Heart: Goryeo, and Kim Woo-bin and Suzy’s Lightly, Ardently. Cheese in the Trap is only partially pre-produced, but it already has people pointing to it as proof of the format’s success.)

KBS is putting a lot of hopes in this show, what with its two big stars and its star writer (Kim Eun-sook of Heirs, A Gentleman’s Dignity) and PD Lee Eung-bok (Secret, School 2013). I’ll be honest and admit that I have about as little interest in this drama as I could have (this writer, she makes me so annnnngry), but that doesn’t mean I don’t see why others might like it: It’s beautiful, it’s glamorous, it’s hoping to be grandiose and romantic and sweeping.

Descended From the Sun also stars Jin Gu, Kim Ji-won, Jo Jae-yoon, Onew, Kang Shin-il, Hyun Juni, and Lee Yi-kyung. It will premiere on February 24 as a Wednesday-Thursday show.

I can't wait to see this manly baby-faced hottie (too much adjectives for one man!)! ? But yesss can't wait to see the drama!

So, she's going to be a damsel in distress?

If thus writer still doesn't change her style, it's safe to assume so. And that the hero would be a conplete jerk. Though I hope it's not that bad, for Joongki's sake.

Considering they are in a war zone and he is some kind of soldier, that is probably the case. Although considering she is a doctor, I expect her saving his life too.

It would be nice to see a professional woman for once. It's so rare in Kdrama, but this poster screems 'Save me, my manly hero. I just can't help myself although I'm supposed to be a doc.'

I'm willing to give this show a chance for two eps, as it is SJK, but will I make it behind the 10 min mark? We'll see.

lol yes. My bet is she'll be a "doctor" in the way all the people on General Hospital are "doctors."

Don't count on it. Lovers' heroine also was a doctor, but OMG, I never thought it'd possible to write so BAD character. I would never believe that needy and stupid woman even got accepted to medical school.
Awful writer. Better not develop high hopes nor expectations at all.

I want to see a character/role like Park Min Young usually does..example, City Hunter, Healer and Remember. Someone who's ready to fight side by side with the hero. I don't expect her to be fighting with guns in this drama, but at least she should not be a total damsel in distress..

What? You don't wear little hottie shorts when you're in a dangerous zone, where clothes covering your exposed body parts might offer some protection? Nope. I think, "I may be a doctor, but I've gotta look 'guud' for all these dying military types."

To watch Joong Ki act again and make me swoon and cry a lot will probably be what gets me through this drama as I don't have high hopes of it being great.

I wish both hovered over a man who is shot. Because apparently the girl is the doctor or nurse, right? What is joonki doing then?

Seducing her?(Though touching ankle is a weird way to do it..)

Yess! This confuses me too because she's the doctor in this scenario so unless her foot is literally blown off and she lost too much blood/ traumatized to function, she should totally be able to take care of this herself. Like what the hell?!

This is the scene where Mr Jerk becomes Prince Charming. Doctor Dot will forget all her doctoring skills and become Damsel in Distress.

If sparks and explosions can be used as a backdrop for a supposed romantic scene, brace yourself.

Explosive chemistry? Well, at least we can't really say they didn't deliver.

Maybe he was a shoe salesman before his military days and is telling her how she needs a different brand ... for the war...?!

But seriously I thought the same thing. Maybe the doc cant reach her own ankle and his administering first aid... or yuck cinderella is getting her shoe back?

Shoe salesman? lol Good one. (Although, I would probably buy what he sold me.)

Glad to know I'm not the only one who's mostly turned off by this drama. I love the leads, but hate the premise and mostly hate the writer. I guess we'll see.

Oh, I am going to watch it.. shoe salesman or not. Mostly, because I want to see Song Joong-ki on my screen. I am a fan and I will always give him a chance!

But I am also wary... Heirs was basically the death of my love for Lee Min-ho.

So I am here, waiting with cautious optimism!

LMH who soared with City Hunter came crashing down with Heirs.
(The blame is split equally between the writer and LMH's hair dye for Heirs)

As much as Im excited for SJK to come back, I too, am not really interested in this writer's works :/ Either way, still rooting him on and wishing the best.

i think the co-writer, Kim Won Seok (Queen's Classroom) and the co-director, Baek Sang Hoon (Secret, Who are You) should be mentioned as well. Pretty sure they had significant input into this as well. Very excited for Song Joong Ki!

I'll be in minority here but I actually have SOME type of hope for this drama.
Not for the Heir's writer (I still dislike Park Shin Hye, Lee Min Ho is forever lost for me), but for the second writer, she has good projects

I'm willing to give this a shot because I know Kim Eun-sook is capable of writing things I love. Secret Garden, City Hall, On Air, and all but the last minute or two of Lovers in Paris. Then there's Lovers in Prague which even the great Jeon Do-yeon.couldn't save, Gentalman's Dignity where I found all but the opening vignetes mindnumbingly boring, and ugh Heirs.

I trust this writer with such a series less than I trust politicians with citizens' best interests, but a fully pre-produced drama like this + filmed at my very home country and island = I kind of have to cover it. But yes, my expectations are as low as they could possibly be for my personal enjoyment, outside of the filming location eye-candy.

I still hope it will be a good piece for the type of series it will be though. So that those who do like such shows and the writer enjoy it and so that the much needed new filming system gets another pat on the shoulder.

Though I really like both SHG and SJK but cannot see them together in a loveline. For me it will be a litmus test of their acting if they make it believable for me. Obviously how their interaction is scripted and directed will have a lot to contribute towards it. But......do not have faith in how she writes the female character specially after The heirs.....which did have good parts sprinkled here and there.... Loved City Hall though.

She is a doctor but they'll make her all lost in War zone, and weak, frail, always looking or needing leading man to save her, and she won't do much than that.

I can see it already. Or maybe she starts badass and turns weak like HJW's character in Secret's garden

I'm only gonna watch this cuz I wanna see Joong-ki strut in a uniform. I haven't realy seen any Song Hye Gyo's drama other than Full House and partially of the melo Autumn in My Heart and I'm not really a fan of hers. It's really just Joong-ki that this show has got going for me.. XD

You know, I really need SJK to do something lighter. I think the only melo I could stick with till the end was Secret, and by then half of my hair was gone. Sageuks are more enjoyable, but I can only watch one at a time. Pretty much the only roles I love SJK are SKK Scandal, A Werewolf Boy and the early Running man episodes. It's a huge credit to him that I'm such a fan even though I've seen so little of him, but seriously. Just throw me a rom-com, will ya? T-T

Unfortunately, this particular poster didn't turn out all that interesting. I would think they would have wanted to take advantage of the fact that they shot a big portion of this drama in a foreign country, and incorporate the landscape of the country in the poster in some way.

Looking forward to seeing Song Joong-ki again.

I suspect both members of the OTP are going to annoy me for complementary reasons, so I will just check in to see Onew act, because he is a sweetie and I am cheering for him to do well outside of music. However, if it is too embarrassing, that will be the end of the show for me; I am not really that interested in the story...

City hall is one of my favorite kdramas so it's not so much that I dislike KES and her writing. I also liked AGD and On Air and to some extend SG. SG is the one that drove me the most crazy - there were all sorts of parts I highly disliked - so starting with the parts that barely made sense. Her other dramas I didn't really enjoy at all... So on to this one... I think it will be a big hit ratings wise. Her dramas always do well in the ratings. So that I can be assured of and baby cutie sjk will be riding high from this one. :) :)

As to whether, I will like it, I am not really sure. I have no idea what kind of character the doc will be. She'll probably be super strong cause KES likes her character to "fight" each other in the beginning. I know there is another writer so it might be different. Does she get weak? Well is there room for that in a war torn area? I don't think she will.

Of course she will!

He walked past her, looking suave and totally disinterested. Then, he literally walked backwards, stooped down and tie her laces. Time will come to a stand still. The helicopter might be waiting perilously long to evacuate everyone, missing these two, buildings may come crashing down, gun fire all around but nothing can stop this romantic moment. How can we blame her? The god like male lead actually cares for her laces amidst all the dangers, she's a goner for sure.
