Drama viewership ratings for the week of Feb. 15-21, 2016

With pre-emptions now over, it’s time to resume scheduling as usual. The weekend’s about to see a big shakeup as most of its longest running shows come to an end, but there’s already been quite a stir caused by the runaway success of the premiere of Five Kids over on KBS. Whether it’ll have lasting success is another matter entirely, since it couldn’t have had a better ratings lead-in than ratings winner Please Mom.
Meanwhile, SBS brought back its second drama weekend slot from hibernation for Yes, That’s How It Is last week, though I’m sure there’s much disappointment over the low numbers, especially from a star writer like Kim Soo-hyun (The Woman Who Married Three Times, Childless Comfort). How it fares in the weeks to come will be the true test, and will likely tell the network whether they should’ve just let sleeping dogs lie when it comes to that time slot.
As for the weekday shows, Six Flying Dragons has seen a slight dip in ratings over these past two weeks, but may still catch up in momentum for its last nine(!) episodes. Remember—Son’s War finished with a bang at 20%, which is an enormous accomplishment these days. Here’s hoping that Yoo Seung-ho doesn’t leave dramaland for movieland—he’ll be missed around these parts.

Yes! I love this show and the acting is fantastic. But I read somewhere that the reason the ratings aren't higher is because of the tough competition on Wed/Thurs nights. The other two shows were pretty established in their ratings when OMHE started.
So I believe (hopefully) that the network isn't blaming the production or the actors but is taking that into account.
I love Jang Na Ra and Jung Kyung Ho. Their acting and chemistry are real and even though the story line could be considered cliche in some aspects, they pull it off hilariously. It really does remind me of Sex and the City.
I'm so happy to see women bonding with real friendship rather than being catty with one another. And I like how they're all at different points in their life: divorced, divorcing, about to get married, trying to get married haha
It's rare that I find a show where I love every single character (with the exception of the dr...). I have been rewatching the episodes.
I'm not sure if the ratings will improve next week since Descendants of the Sun and Come Back Ahjussi have been widely anticipated and I imagine the viewers from Remember would rather start a new drama than start in the middle of OMHE. But nonetheless, I love OMHE and hope it does well! OMHE, fighting!!!

I doubt the ratings are going to get much better. They are going up against newcomer DOTS w the Songs and KES. I think they have a chance against SBS's drama and could fare better than that one.
Oh well, am still enjoying OMHE.

SBS next drama is Please come back Ahjussi which stars Rain, Kim Soo Ro, Lee Min Jung, Oh Yeon Seo, Lee Honey and Ra MI Ran, As it was a Fantasy body swapping drama and it will compete with Song Joongki and Song Hye Kyo's drama descendant of the sun I'm sure Please come back Ahjussi won't get a higher ratings as Korean Viewers don't like that kind of genre but it feels like the drama is good as most of the cast are great actors and it was based on the best selling book in Japan 7 days.
If i will have to choose between 2 drama I will choose Rain's new drama not because I am one of Rani's fan but seeing Song Joong ki's drama teaser it's not my type of drama :D

Because it's an enjoyable and engaging drama for quite alot of people even now. Sorry if you're not feeling it anymore.
I think the issue is koreans were not on board with the main couple initially although people are FINALLY realizing how wonderful Soo Hyuk is. It's not like only extremely high quality dramas get higher than 5% ratings. Even a drama like Master of Trade which has had netizens seriously complaining and lambasting it for weeks (same with the final episode) hovered in the low to mid 10's.

haha, exactly. this is my response too. even i quit watching remember since ep 10, but i dont think, OMHE deserves high rating.
poor kyungho, i really like this oppa. hope he'll get another great project. he deserves to be in A list actors :D

Btw. just to make sure: That wasn't a rhetorical or cynical question. Even though it sounds like one.
I had to stop watching a few weeks ago, mostly because I was very disappointed with the show. I originally expected a comedy but the show didn't want to go there. I was curious how else they would employ those cardboard characters, so I continued watching for a few episodes.
Finally, I could not get past of one of the most clumsily written scenes I've seen in any prime-time K-drama:
There was this issue about Soo-hyuk, a supposedly working single dad, who is never working and never parenting and who doesn't even seem to be aware of the fact that he has a job and a son almost all the time -- especially while he's busy stalking his "best friend's" girlfriend. Okay, now that's just following the trope-book of K-drama leads here, nothing to loose your sleep over.
But then the writer decided to address this inconsistency by creating a "client" of Mi-mo who doesn't even pretend to be interested in her services but who is just there to tell her (and the audience) how the seemingly immature and irresponsible behaviour of Soo-hyuk is actually supposed to be adorable *wag-of-the-finger*.
I still feel like I need a shower just by thinking about it ...
Anyway. Did the writing get better? Did the show find something to do with its characters?

His job is a celebrity journalist. He's shown at his job a LOT of times. In fact, a few chance meetings (e.g. the first one at the restaurant, the one at the club, then the one at the hospital) with Mi Mo came about WHILE he was doing his job.

Did CITT's ratings drop after last week's preemption? Hope it picks up again next week because it's been consistently good and deserves higher numbers. Anyway, it's really a great show and I'll miss it a lot. I can't believe there are only four episodes left.

yeah, there was a slight dip after the pre-emption, but considering even the lowered numbers are safely over 5 percent, it's still a hit.
(the clue to tvN's ratings expectations of this drama lies in the ratings promise - the cast had sworn they'd do free hugs if they crossed 5 percent before the end, which tells you what they thought they could get)

Yeah, Park Hae-jin and the guy who played Eun-taek gave free hugs to lucky (school?) girls. The line was so long they couldn't hug them all. ? PHJ also went to a high school (?) and made one girls' class spazzy.

couldn't of said it better myself! Although tbqh when I read that there was a dip in ratings, before I saw the numbers, I expected it to be much worse. Still being around 15% isn't too bad. Hopefully it does pick up! But if it doesn't, as long as the next couple of episodes and the ending is good, then that's all we could ask for. :)

I can't believe SFD's ratings still hasn't rebounded since the Lunar New Year dip. It's the final 10 episodes and I expected it to do much better than this. I'm enjoying it so much and I wish more people would watch it.

For one, I lost some interests. I wanted to see more of 3 young dragons (commoner's side)- that is the reason I loved this show- since LBW and JDJ conflicts were too well known history, and I don't even know why it is Six flying dragons, watching recent episodes.

Me too. SFD story lost my interest because I feel like it twists history a bit too much for my liking. Maybe if I didn't learn bits of Korean history, I would enjoy it more.

It's a typical family weekend fare with little actual plot. Ajummas love this stuff and 20+ ratings are quite common for this type of dramas.

I watched and it was soso, but kid in a show is always cute- and there are five of those.
For Yes, that's how it is, It felt too similar to the writer's last drama 'Childless comfort' even though it was ratings hit.

Ok now hold on. This one got under the radar but the cast includes SUNG HOON from Oh My Venus as well as Shim Hyun Tak, who played the abtastic chaebol lawyer on both Divorce Lawyer in Love and Let's Eat 1 (It was essentially the same character on both shows.) I know neither of these guys is the main dude but they seem to have prominent roles so I'm definitely checking it out.

I used to think that impressive, then I realized that just about any weekend drama, no matter how bad, will hit in the 20% range. I highly suspect it is one of those shows that people turn on while doing other things, and not so much watched as occasionally looked at.

I stopped watching Remember in the middle of episode 8 because I was getting too annoyed with it, but the ratings keep climbing so I guess the drama must have gotten a lot better or is it just because it's the kind of story the Korean audience like? Personally, I don't think Yoo Seung-ho and Park Min-young have any kind of chemistry, I saw a snapshot of their kiss and it looked pretty awkward.

I got thru it but I can't figure the high ratings either. Unless people tuned in every week to see Nam Goong-min do his demented act, which wore pretty thin after a while. I liked Park Sung-woong's character. The rest of it seemed very trite.

Urghh sameeee it was so frustrating to watch but I couldn't stand not knowing how the good guys win so ended up skimming through it (maybe watching nam gyu man going crazy was kinda addicting too ><).. And yesss YSH and PMY omg I was hoping the writers would keep it as a noona-dongsaeng relationship since they didn't have much scenes showing how they start having romantic feelings for each other but nooooooo they had to do it......

No it didn't. I was frustrated to the end but watched it anyway. Agree, Park Min-Young was totally wasted, the drama was really overworked and the story really annoyed me. I kind of feel that Min Namgoong and his crazy villain antics kind of carried the show. He had one really awesome scene near the end too.

Yes! Signal is the drama that i am really happy about these days! It has nearly double the ratings of cheese and thats definitely something i did not expect (although i love both equally!) TvN deserves it though - they have such good quality shows and the ratings is proof of this, no other channel even close XD

I'm just curious, why does everyone say Signal's ratings so much more of a surprisr than Cheese in the Trap? One is a weekday time slot, the other is in the weekend.
and someone said the CITT cast also made ratings promises if the drama ever crossed 5 percent, it's not like Reply where it was a weekend slot and expected to score super high from the beginning.

I stopped watching signal on episode two. I got turned off by the scene when the mother of the murder victim threw a fit. Sometimes I get turned off by some of the silly plot devices that make koreans appear to be uneducated and backward. I never watched Remember because I wasn't interested in the hokey story line. Sounds like I didn't miss much. Signal I may pick back up again but I doubt it. There are too many new dramas coming up that are interesting.

I have to say, I might partly understand you here. I too was bothered a lot by the victim's mother because she was such an uninspired plot device all along, culminating in that -- to me -- very unconvincing outburst.
Though to me the issue wasn't that she appeared uneducated or something, it was more of a story-telling mistake. She was there to symbolise the "cold case", but she was never treated as a character. Not by the camera, not by the characters in the show.
And suddenly she comes up with a perfectly moralising philosophical and otherwise pointless argument and this is suddenly supposed to be an actual personal concern of her (as a character), rendered as a fit of justly rage.

Yeah, I'd be happier if Signal would just recognize the fact that it's a procedural and stop trying to wring tears out of us over "characters" whose only purpose is victimization. That crosses the line into fridging, which gets old very fast in this kind of genre.

It actually worked in one instance, which was Oh Kyung-tae and his daughter who died in the bus crash. Though that was mainly down to the staging of the way the daughter died, and the way the father was established as a character in his own right before the entire sequence of events (we get enough of a sense of who he is, and his relationships with other people - this is something that simply doesn't happen with the other victims, because we only know them as victims and nothing else).
The kid may as well have had a huge 'SOMETHING BAD WILL HAPPEN TO ME' sign flashing over her head though, it was that obvious she would be fridged.

I get where you're coming from. It's never been egregious, but it's sort of adding up for me--they obviously really, really, really want my tears, but I'm not going to cry over some tertiary character whose twenty minutes of screen time is spent milking the ~tragedy (especially when they double down and establish superficial connections with the heroes).
idk, a lot of this is just my personal feelings about the genre, but I just find this kind of emotionality very phony--it's a question of honesty for me. It's the difference between classic old school procedurals, where detectives are making cracks before the body gets cold, just trying to do their job and stay sane, and the newer ones that lose sight of reality in their rush to make detective work sexy and victims extra tragic (not to mention the injection of ~humanism by closing each case with drippy sentiment and soft rock ballads). Signal is an okay show and it's not nearly as bad as others, but it definitely irritates me lol.

I have been watching k-dramas for years, and have completed probably 150-200 or more.
Almost every other melodrama, and many other shows do indeed seem to go out of their way to make people - and in many cases - Korean society and customs look very stupid.
Except for Signal and one or two other cop shows, name any that did not make the entire police force look stupid, incompetent, and corrupt?
Same for nearly all politicians, chaebols, candy girls, etc. - a large number of the plots and plot devices do not reflect well on Korean society.
Much of that is not even close to the actual situation, but many TV dramas seem hell bent on reinforcing the public's idea that everything in Korea sucks.

Here is the thing though, tv shows due tend to be a reflection of society in some cases. The fact that K-Dramas portray cops as corrupt, and chaebols as money graving monsters can be there for a reason. Yeah they can be used in most cases as tv show troupes but if you read the news about Korea and do a little research you can see that it can be corrupt to some extend, yet again which country isn't currently corrupt right? The way I see it it is a satire or judgement of how currently society is. Besides it doesn't go to far from reality, look at the Mall Collapse, the
Seongsu Bridge Collapse, the Gwangju Inhwa School case the Sewol Ferry Accident, ect. ect.
Every time I see the cops being corrupt and government officials being corrupt in K-dramas it reminds me of the current situation in Mexico. I sometimes even wish the cops and government where portrayed in Mexican soap operas the way they are portrayed in Korea, maybe that would even help open the mind of people instead of the garbage they are feed. In that aspect I applaud Korea for not disguising the country as a perfect country were everything is OK and has no corruption.
There was a comment I read here in dramabeans I can't remember who it was but they said that they missed the way rich people used to be portrayed in dramas back then, they used to be portrayed as people who had a lot of wisdom and were always given good advises. Now they are portrayed as corrupt money graving people. Mainly the Chaebols or people who are the second generation. People who you could even say didn't have to work to get were they are. First generation was portrayed as wise because they practically helped Korea grow, it was their investments and their jobs creation what helped Korea and also mind you the hard working people. Now you see cases of for example the dubbed "Korea nut rage" Again I see these troupes as mainly satire and judgement of society.

I'm with Windsum. My knowledge of Korean society only comes from the many kdramas I have seen and they don't paint Korean society in a good light.
Kdramas make it seem like all of Korea are obsessed with money and very corrupt. They are extremely image oriented. They have a caste system where if you are rich you are groveled to and treated like royalty, while if you are poor you have no worth. Women have a lower worth in Korea then men. The sins of the parents are the sins of the children. Politicians only care about themselves and power and not the people. Being forceful and almost violent towards a woman is supposed to be romantic (i.e. grabbing the girls arms, the man using his superior strength to force his will on a woman, forcing kisses, etc..). And so on. I originally just figured they were plot devices and Korea wasn't anything like this, but after seeing these same plot device repeated in almost every kdrama makes me thing they are true or there is truth in them.

I'm not Korean so I admit I have no idea what Korea is actually like. However, what you described is like every soap opera ever. Which leads me to believe it has less to do with the actual state of Korea as a country and more to do with the genre and it's defined tropes.

That's exactly what my comment was saying. All the shows tend to show those same things because they are the tropes. And those tropes I named tend to make Korea look bad. There are also good tropes that make Korea look good. It's not all bad but I was just adding to the OP comment.

This is for any country and person. They judge on the information they were given. People outside America who have only been exposed to America through the media has done the exact same thing to America. I've had foreigners ask me questions or said things about my culture that me and no one I know has ever done or is just not true, but it's a trope shown in our media.
People make judgements because we are human beings. You are making a judgement about me and you are more then welcome to. I am indeed American but I have traveled to many different countries. I was never saying this is what Korean culture is I was saying that after being told the same thing over and over makes people think this is truth. I know some of the common tropes in Korean TV are not true I also know some of the tropes are true but usually to a lesser extent then shown in kdramas.
So don't get your undies in a bunch because I know Korea is a wonderful country with a lot of good things about their culture, I also know they have a lot of bad things about their culture. You know, like any country, America included. My whole post was not calling Korea in question I was calling their overuse of specific tropes in question.

Yes, Moorim School is aired by KBS, one of the three, free national networks. Madame Antoine is aired by a small cable station which can only be watched by subscribers. A 3% share is therefore a disaster for KBS, where it would be a hit for JTBC - who also primarily care about how many subscribers they attract. Not how many viewers they have.

Still 'I have a Lover' is the one giving me the most feels. Love it. love it love it. Only two more episodes left? Story line is repeating, and too obvious that they are trying to have easy way out/ happy ending for second leads, but I can never get enough of main leads scene.

It had been suffering on it's Saturday showings for some weeks now, but now the Friday also falls apart.
Honestly, I don't see how this show has a chance on a premium cable channel. There's really nothing to justify the "premium" tag ...

I'm not surprised at Madame Antoine's ratings, I don't find the story believable at all and it doesn't help that Han Ye-seul and Sung Joon don't have chemistry with one another. The drama does have its moments though but the fact that it's kinda boring outweighs whatever moments it has.

Same here (@ the ratings part) I actually think they have chemistry, the problem is awful writing and Sung Joon's character. I happen to like the actors, so I watch it for the fun in the moment and even then I get angry at what's happening lol I guess, now I just want to see how it ends

I think it's watchable, but tt's incredibly cliche and has an annoyingly unethical male lead, but I think a lot of the problem is that the previews always tell you the entire plot of the next episode.
WTH is up with that? You can watch every other episode and not miss a thing.

I caught a few episodes of Signal in the beginning but am saving it for a marathon. I'm glad the Korean audience is loving it though! There's no doubt it can hit the teens by the end of its run.

Secret wasn't really comparable, it was a public broadcast drama that everyone pretty much expected to be cannon fodder in the ratings battle against Heirs- no buzz beforehand.
Signal has a lot more firepower in that department, it never really lacked in pre-show buzz (Kim Hye-soo on cable would create enough, but throw in the PD of Misaeng? It's certified).

Tvn should just start having their own award shows! I heard there was a talk about that last year or sometime but no words on it anymore. tvn actors deserve to be awarded for their effort and acting besides I am pretty sure the channel is earning alot to atleast organise an award cermony for its most mind blowing actors and directors and writers. reply 1988, signal, cheese in the trap all of it deserves recognition. I just feel sad for seo in guk who was such a find of tvn and gave probably the two most successful drama to the channel for its time didn't get any recognition for it by tvn.
I hope tvn think about it carefully and actually start a award show so that my lovely cheese couply could be awarded for their outstanding chemistry. Besides Park hae jin deserves an award for the best expressions ever!

I stopped watching OMHE after ep4..disappointed with the show..I love jang nara but OMHE not impress me. I hope she will get better drama next time. Signal- OMG I really love the drama. Thumbs up to all the actor of the drama..cheese in trap sweet love storyline..even simple love story but make the viewers waiting the show every week..caiyok signal n cheese in trap.

I think OMHE is cute. It has turned into more of an ensemble show with the multiple storylines. I'm actually ok with this, there's not too much meat in the main love triangle so if they didn't have supporting storylines they would have to make some over the top junk up.
