Drama viewership ratings for the week of Feb. 22-28, 2016

The drama lineup got a pretty big shakeup this week with two new primetime shows entering the thunderdome, along with one new weekend show. It’s fair to say that all eyes were on Descended From the Sun’s premiere, if for no other reason that we’ve been seeing promo materials for what feels like forever now, so curiosity had to be high.

And it was, with Descended pulling in big numbers for its first episode at 14.3%. What’s even better is that it went up a point for its second, though the same can be said for competitor Come Back Ajusshi, which scored a decent (by today’s standards) opening, and finished the week at 7.6%. I don’t see any huge upsets ahead when it comes to these two shows—Ajusshi is a neat show in its own right so far, but Descended has all the press and pizazz. It seems poised for success, so it’ll be an interesting one to watch in the weeks to come.

Backing up a bit, poor, poor Moorim School scored record low numbers at 2.6%. I actually just feel bad for the cast and crew now, since they have to truck along till the end no matter what. Sigh. But over on cable (we’re just jumping everywhere in this post), Signal actually broke double digits, which is HUGE. And I’m so happy for it, because it really and truly deserves it. Keep on keepin’ on, you awesome show you.

I agree. Five kids is really good I am definitely interested in the show and I'm interested enough that I'm actually able to keep track of all the different characters. Considering it is an ensemble show that means my interest is very high.

I've tried both new weekender, Five Kids and Yes, That's How It Is. As usual the early episodes always make your blood boil with the usual annoying characters.. 5K has the maknae oppa, frenemy in-law and cheating ex-husband & former bestfriend couple. I can't really pinpoint anybody i dislike yet in YTHII (maybe the son in law?). I don't mind the elders in both shows. Being a parent myself, tho i cant totally relate, i do understand where they come from.

I dropped Moorim. I'm glad IHA finally ends so i can finally move on. I tried Neighbourhood Heroes cos of LSH but cant get past ep 1. I'm still watching the rest but without much investment. I only have DOTS to look forward to..

That's a bit harsh for Moorim, pity, because I actually find it a decent watch - going against the tide of popular opinion here. But seriously, I've not felt compelled to drop it yet, which for me, speaks volumes.

There are so many other dramas which have fared worse for me, and which I've dropped half way through - Yongpal, Heirs, Oh My Venus, to name but a few.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I just hope the cast and crew don't get too dispirited by the ratings and will continue to fight on till the end!

Talking about other dramas, I look forward to marathoning Signal during my holidays!

CITT has also been a fun ride, but I must admit, the mess behind the scenes drama has dampened my spirits a little.

Caught the first two eps of DotS too - not sure how I feel about it yet, but I was entertained by what I saw. I usually give it a good 5-6 eps before making a decision whether or not to continue with it (in most cases). Same ol tropes, but nothing offensive. So that's a bonus.

The story is decent actually, I like the fact that for once KES' characters don't hate each other in the beginning. And I love the directing (can't believe it's the PD of Secret, I kinda hate the directing there). But the music, God, no! It makes everything so cringeworthy. At least in 1st episode since I haven't watched the 2nd.

Yeah, now they fall in love at first sight. And what's the story? Excuse the sarcasm but it's combined w/ genuine curiosity. Because all I got out of the 1st ep was: alpha males fight in love and war, and ER doctor saves lives while flirting. All the eye contacts, slow motion, music and interactions made my skin crawl. I'm second hand embarrassed for the actors.

0

It certainly made me laugh, and roll my eyeballs at the same time (at several points), but hey, that too is considered a factor of entertainment. I wouldn't be tuning in for depth of plot/character, that's for sure, but that does not necessarily mean that it lacks substance.

Same here. It's honestly a lame plot but it's entertaining so why not I guess. That's the same thinking that got me thru oh my Venus

But as for Moorim School....2.6 percent? Ouch! I just hope everyone gets to finish this and get paid, since the production had to be cut short because KBS refused to cough up any more money.

I was so excited for friday to come so I could watch this week's cheese. But then....we all know what happened. It sucks because it happened after I became *actually truly* invested. It should've happened when I was only admiring the cheese from afar. So this is how it's like for a mouse to be caught in a trap(excuse my *very* lame puns). Hearing about the special ep made my blood boil a little. They should've just extended it(or cut the *excess* so it could've been part of the drama). I mean I love me some Inho-piano angst but you do not mess with Jung Sunbae! Okay, scratch that lol. I should watch it before raging haha. I'll still see it to the end though. I will for Seol. Team Seol all the way! And to mend my already broken heart, I've started reading the webtoon.

And I'm looking forward to binge-watching Signal. I've heard nothing but good things plus Lee Je-hoon whom I've loved since Bleak Night.

Wah this so much! I love marathon-ing a drama but Signal is a different case. I used to limit myself 1 ep per night and 2 eps per week but I just broke the record last week when I watched episode 10-11 in one night and now I'm still afraid to watch episode 12. This drama makes me forget to breathe, pull my own hair and cry most of the times.

I've tried every singe drama that has aired in 2016 and Signal is the show to beat so far. It has the trifecta (acting, directing, writing) and has literally been heart-stopping from the get go. Reply Me 1988 runs it close but even Reply Me got a bit draggy in spots. Signal has been perfect.

I 100% agree. Signal ep 9 and 10 were so intense that I'm a little surprised they're glossing over the Injoo incident. Maybe because the kids are minors?

Have you seen Han Gong ju? It's a film also inspired by the Miryang gang rape and I liked the way they portrayed it. They showed the scene, and it wasn't visually graphic, but it was clear how horrifying the incident was.

I really want them to go there in Signal b/c it was horrifying and all the boys got away with it and are living normal lives right now with no criminal records. I hope Signal reminds people of what happened.

CITT: shaking head. How to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

CBA: Going with the funny and heart tugging vs war romance.

Signal may be taking over the top #1 spot in my long list of over 150 dramas watched in the past three+ years. It is beyond perfect...so perfect in every way it takes my breath away. The only moments of annoyance I experience are the blatant insertions of Subway as a sponsor - but I'll even forgive that because sponsors are what have made this awesome drama possible.

The end of episode 12 just tore my heart out, as did the scene where Lee Jae-Han's first love was crying in the theater after his first love died. WOW.

I think our hearts may not be able to take the ending - whatever it is. I have no idea how they will end it - and doubtful it will be my desire to have Lee Jae-Han brought back to life so he and Cha Soo-Hyun can get married and have adorable babies. Whatever the ending is, it's bound to be magnificent.

I was watching DOTS than Come Back Mister.

After the first two episodes of DOTS, guess I will be placing Come Back Ajusshi on my playlist first.

After all the money they had on DOTS, with nice camerawork and everything, that's it.

Not sure how much money they spent on Come Back Ajusshi, but when it comes to ROI (return on investment), Come Back Ajusshi seems to be winning hands down.

I am also a fan of Moorim School, after all the heavy stuff. Fluff is wonderful. And the stunt work is fairly good, and the powers do not seem that far fetch/ easily attained.

Signal is in double digits, YAY! It totally deserves it!

And it says something about a show (Moorim School) when a cable show has three times the viewership than a network tv! Funnily enough, Moorim School finally found its groove last two week and is finally interesting! It's a pity it took so long to find its feet. The first eight episodes were almost intolerable.

Signal is definitely the best drama I've seen in a looooong time. Every episode has been great; it does not disappoint.

First week of DotS has me hooked :P (It's worth watching just for the pretty! haha) Unlike Signal it doesn't really have a central plot so far, so I'm a little worried about its direction & substance down the road.. buuuut too early to start worrying :) Looking forward to next week's episodes.

I guess Koreans really love some soap opera, because that's the only way I can describe My Daughter Geum Sa-wol...it's like a US daily soap opera and the story lines made about as much sense as theirs do - seriously, I was going through the grocery checkout and saw this headline "The END for Victor and Nikki?" - now, I have no clue as to the exact amount because I stopped watching soaps not long after college (we're talking mid-1980s here) but how many times in the last 35 or so years do you think it's been "the END for Victor and Nikki?" At any rate, if Koreans had soaps that ran for decades, Geum Sa-wol would be the kind of show they would have.

Koreans have their own daily dramas that runs during the day like the US soaps and some in the evening.

Geum Sa-wol is a weekend family, comedy,melo-drama. This genre has always been popular with the ajummas. In the old days the ratings would go as high as 70%. It's not surprising that it's still the most dominant genre on tv during the weekend.

Not much comedy in Geum Sa-wol, except for the villian's mom, first wife and daughters. And they were pretty stupid comedic relief.

I guess you could say that the US soap audience, at least what is left of it, is mostly "ajummas" as well.

There is a big difference between US Soaps and Korean Family dramas.
US soaps are more sensual, sexy etc. Korean family dramas have some family elements that viewers can relate to. Although it may have many episodes it will eventually come to end. Unlike some US soap that runs for over 20+ years.

Personally, I can't stand US soaps to be honest. I'm not into Korean family dramas either but I'd watch a daily sageuk like King's Daughter.

I am so happy to see Signal do well; they deserve it.

I actually think CBA is doing as well as expected. If it can maintain and maybe grow a point or two, that's about what can be expected. Nothing was ever going to take on DOTS, and I'm sure they didn't expect it to. The test will be when Mr. Black starts airing to see if either drama starts bleeding viewers.

CITT I'm watching...yes, I'm weak but I want to see them wrap it up and am hoping it's not a total train wreck. The first half was so good that I still have trouble understanding how it went sideways.
