The rise and fall of Cheese in the Trap

By now, you’ve probably already heard plenty about the brouhaha surrounding Cheese in the Trap, which we haven’t commented on too much here—mostly because the controversy started off at a relatively low rumble with claims that were, for the large part, difficult to substantiate or confirm.

But I’ve been keeping an eye on the developing headlines, and somewhere in the past couple days, it feels like the controversy reached a tipping point and is now gaining momentum and intensity, rather than dying down. I’d wanted to wait for more official statements and facts to come out before talking about it, and now that we’ve had multiple statements from key parties, including Park Hae-jin, it seems a good time to weigh in.

Reading the Cheese recap comments, it seems like most fans are already aware of the issues so I won’t go into comprehensive detail, but to give the general overview: Fans have always been critical of Cheese deviating from its original material, but for the most part, after the show premiered to praise and massive ratings, those comments calmed down for a while. However, about halfway through the show, the complaints began growing again, coupled with the increasing disgruntlement over the drama’s curious shortening of star Park Hae-jin’s screentime (playing Yoo Jung, but you know this already), which has coincided with the drastic increase in screentime for his co-star Seo Kang-joon (Baek In-ho).

We’d all noticed this, I’m sure, but it feels like things really blew up this week after Episodes 13 and 14 aired, and our lead actor was hardly in them.

A lot of conspiracy theories are floating around for why this might happen, but I have to admit at first I disregarded them as overreaching by upset fans. After all, I don’t see any problem with a drama deviating from source material to be its own thing, and viewers can’t expect or demand that a show re-create a webtoon perfectly. That said, the longer this controversy stretched, the more confused I got, and now I have to join the chorus of puzzled viewers wondering if there isn’t something to the rumors—I’m not one for conspiracy theories, but this whole situation is so bizarre that there aren’t many explanations otherwise.

I don’t actually find the main plot points of the drama to be too problematic on paper—for instance, In-ho struggling to reclaim his life, Jung and Seol arguing and making up—but it’s a case where the balance is all wrong. By skewing the focus so drastically, the show has altered the effect of the story in a way that now feels unnatural to its intent.

It came out that there were significant edits made to the shot footage, which was markedly different from the footage that was aired, which happened to favor a focus on Seo Kang-joon over Park Hae-jin. My jaw dropped to read reports that Park Hae-jin hadn’t been invited to the show’s own wrap party or reward vacation. (He clarifies this in the interview below.) There are rumors that Park Hae-jin finished shoots on the show a full five days in advance of Kim Go-eun or Seo Kang-joon, which is mind-boggling.

On a related note, I do also have to issue a mea culpa of sorts for Episode 13, because at the time I wrote the recap, I wasn’t aware of the full behind-the-scenes controversy, and therefore merely thought that while it was curious that Park Hae-jin was getting so little to do, I was sure—so totally confident—that the drama was just on a minor detour that there was no way he was going to be shafted in the long run. Because of course that’s how it should be! Who writes a drama and cuts out the hero at the end?

The story of Cheese in the Trap was so clearly about Seol and Jung, with In-ho playing a supporting role, and so I presumed In-ho would get his big moment and then fade away, like Copycat Min-soo and Stalker Young-gon. I had too much faith in the show to consider that anything else might happen, but after reading through the massive flood of new articles currently floating around in the internet ether, I’m concerned that I was too optimistic, and that the show might not right its course.

On February 24, webtoon writer Soonkki wrote publicly on her blog about the production not consulting her about the plot after Episode 6. She stated that the show contacted her later about the last two episodes, then disregarded her requests not to write a certain ending, lest it overlap too much with her own plans for the webtoon’s ending, which is yet to come. She wrote, “Considering that the medium is different, I’d wanted the drama to have a different feel from the original. However, it was reported that the drama was ‘faithful to the original.’ While the drama was being produced to be faithful to the original, I did not receive even one call, and I don’t know what plot will be produced.”

And that brings us to today, with new interviews with Park Hae-jin asking him for his thoughts on the matter. He is diplomatic but somewhat forthcoming, enough that we can read between the lines. I always find Korean stars to be so excessively polite and image-conscious that they hardly say anything in interviews, and therefore you know things must be really bad for them to say anything negative about their projects or the people they’ve worked with. (Mostly, it’s starting to look like PD Lee Yoon-jung must be nuts, and Park Hae-jin is a class act. PD Lee is getting a firestorm of flak right now, with Park Hae-jin being inundated with public sympathy. As this is also my sentiment, I have no problems with the current tide of public opinion.)

At the time that the drama’s reward vacation plans were announced, Park was asked about it and replied that he’d never heard anything about it. This time he clarified, “This is something I think I have to explain clearly. Because of my schedule, I told them in advance that I wouldn’t be able to go, and I think that’s why they didn’t contact me. Later I heard about the reward vacation’s time and location through the news. As I said, I didn’t know anything about it… The next day at an event, I was told, ‘I tried to tell you the plans, but the news came out first.’ If I’d heard [the talk] that I didn’t go because I was hurt over the drama, I think I would have just gone. It’s a situation that got misrepresented through misunderstanding.”

Park was asked about certain complaints about the drama character not living up to the webtoon character, and it sounds like Park himself wasn’t happy with the characterization.

Park Hae-jin: “It’s possible the drama viewers would think that. In my family, my noona and I have read the webtoon, while my brother-in-law and mother haven’t. Those who haven’t read it ask me, ‘Why is Yoo Jung doing that?’ and I explain it to them. There’s no need to take the webtoon directly as is, but in the drama there’s a connecting flow and you need to create plausibility. There’s a slight disconnected feeling, and in some parts it could be like ‘fishing’ [bait-and-switching] to viewers. From the viewer’s standpoint, you need to be able to sympathize and relate.”

He added, “If the plot interferes with plausibility or is unable to be understood, you can’t watch the drama. There are parts I’m disappointed about. There are parts where the feeling between what we shot and what aired is different.”

He said, “There are things I’m disappointed with regarding the screentime and editing. But even being the lead character, depending on the episode your emphasis could be greater or lesser. Truthfully, I don’t think the real problem is the screentime or editing. The biggest issue is that my character, Yoo Jung, has changed. He carries hidden scars that he can’t show to others. He smiles to cover that up, and shows a bright face. There are certain scenes that are necessary to show the characters’ internal and external sides. But in the drama, they were different from the original. I was disappointed in this point. I chose Cheese in the Trap because of Yoo Jung’s duality, with his sweet and chilling sides.”

“Past the first half of the series, this side of Yoo Jung wasn’t revealed much. Thus the character’s very essence was weakened, and changed. More than the shortening of my screentime because of the editing, I’m just so disappointed in the character faltering.”

“I really wanted to take on the role of Yoo Jung, but I’m disappointed that I wasn’t able to show something more. And I’m also sorry to writer Soonkki of the original.”

A source from his management’s side said, “When he agreed to take the role, he only had one condition. That they not shatter the original. He only wanted for the characters’ personalities and situations to be explained adequately. Now only Episodes 15 and 16 remain. Park Hae-jin’s part is small, but he put forth his best effort. He mentioned that he’d be a ‘scene stealer.'” Also: “From Episode 10 onward, we asked the producers constantly to explain. But all they said was that they were in talks with Soonkki.”

What about the ending? Park said, “I don’t know how the ending will be. There are a lot of instances where we filmed things that didn’t air, so even I will have to watch the broadcast to know. But since it’s a drama I appeared in, I hope it will wrap up well.”

“Because filming has already wrapped, I can only wait to see how the director edited things. It’s upsetting. I worked hard as the actor in the lead, but I’m sad I couldn’t show more.”

One source with the drama said, “The original [story] has completely crumbled. Episodes 15 and 16 contain events that are incomprehensible.”

Park seems to be unhappy with PD Lee Yoon-jung’s direction, though he seemed careful not to badmouth her. Regarding the constant changes to the script, he said, “There were a lot of revisions made on set, to the extent that a script being complete became meaningless. I heard that’s her style.”

He described how PD Lee didn’t seem that concerned with sticking to the original material, and would sometimes ask why it was a problem. His interviewer asked if the new parts—the scenes the drama created that weren’t in the original—were the problem. He replied, “[The drama] didn’t capture the parts that are in the webtoon well, either. I’d like to ask the director once, why she did that. I don’t know what is still to come, but I’d still like to ask that.”

“When I watched the broadcast, Yoo Jung didn’t appear very much. I’d like to ask [the director] why. It’s not only the scenes I filmed, but there were child parts that were entirely skipped, and the emotional lines between Yoo Jung and his father, and parts where we could have explained more and still been insufficient, but got removed. There were things that didn’t get filmed, but even things we filmed were edited out. So I’d like to ask that myself, what the reason was.”

Park’s management company, WM Company, stated, “The viewers’ reactions are already known, and we’re extremely disappointed about the screentime issue. We just don’t understand why things that were already filmed were cut out. There are major scenes for Yoo Jung that were shot that weren’t included. [He/we] expressed extreme opposition to the current plot, but [they] did not accept any of it.”

He was asked if he’s satisfied about what’s aired. He replied, “To be honest, it would be a lie to say I’m 100% satisfied. The reason I confirmed Cheese in the Trap at the very start when the director, writer, or anything else hadn’t been decided was the because of the strength of the original, and my trust in the webtoon. Right now, I have nothing to trust in.”

Even so, a source with WM Company and the production staff did give an interview on the 26th stating that rumors of discord between Park Hae-jin and PD Lee were completely groundless and “pointless rumors.”

Meanwhile, through this all, PD Lee Yoon-jung has remained quite tight-lipped, only saying in one phone interview, “You’ll have to talk to the drama’s team leader, not me.” Also, “I can’t really talk about it, so I don’t plan to give an interview.”

She told one reporter, “I’ll talk about it later, in other circumstances. That means I’ll tell you if we meet on personal terms.” That is to say, off the record.

Park did express gratitude for the response to his role: “I’m thankful for receiving love beyond my expectations. I don’t know if I was able to bear the weight of the webtoon. Rather than bearing it, there were parts that were incomplete. I did my best with the situation I was given. I’ll work hard on what was lacking to show a better side in the future. I’ll return having grown more.”

“I think I’ve changed a little through doing this drama, about doing my best to protect the character. I had thought that an actor just has to do a good job on set, and get along with the other actors and staff without trouble. But it doesn’t seem that’s all there is to it.”

I really feel bad for the original writer, she said she told the PD the ending on her own webtoon that is to come and asked of them to create another one for the drama not to spoil her own work that is still ongoing yet they didn't listen at all,cut connection with her and used her original ending for the drama...It also looks like the PD is not on her first time destroying characters like that, she did in the past as well with her main leads...but to say again she doesn't want to coment on the stuff what the heck...The sold the drama to China becauser of PHJ star power there, sponsors etc. and PHJ is mostly promoting it there, because of his popularity got sold off and now they did this, use him and descard him, making him for days with tight shedule on his own and they cut his filmed stuff to make SKJ re-film his stuff, what kind of twisted is this...they destroyed one of the most important char in a while aka Jung..so unproffesional even more to what they did to PHJ and even more to the original writer, shame on the PD....

WOW! It's absolutely HUGE that PHJ would publicly comment like that - and to the depth that he did. After three years of watching over 150 dramas and reading everything I can find about them, I'm stunned and proud of PHJ for his honesty and bravery. Now I'm really paying attention to him as an actor.

First it's a tv drama, not a G8 summit. Next, actors get their scenes edited and cut all the time in post production. Korean drama watchers are just used to very often being able to influence the tone, who gets screen time and the outcome of a drama because of the way most kdramas are produced, at the last minute. So in consequence often dramas go off the rails because of viewer influence and many a career has been boosted as well. Perhaps the PD decided to strengthen the In Ho character on the initial strength of the positive reaction to Seo Kang joon. They new from the beginning that they would need to deviate from the ending planned by the original writer.

That being said It doesn't surprise me that Seo Kang joon has siphoned off a lot of Park Hye Jin's limelight or that he had a little help in doing it. Perhaps there are some Roommate viewers here that remember how extremely uncomfortable it was to watch so many of the scenes with Seo Kang Joon and Park Min woo. Every time Seo Kang joon walked into a room the women there would loose their damned minds and start acting like idiots. Min woo finally had a melt down over it. Constantly taking a back seat to Kang joon even though he was smarter, more athletic, tall and good looking in his own right. I failed to see it. I just never thought the boy was good looking enough for all the women to behave so silly around him. Surely after you realized he had about as much personality as a boiled potato the initial reaction to his good looks would wear off. He's been pushed hard and received a lot of pretty choice roles ever since. I don't know if anyone is "sponsoring" him. I'm inclined to think not. I just think the kid got lucky, he's pretty and he's able to cash in on his looks. If nothing else korean celebs are commodities, they generate revenue if your boy is pretty and the girls like him, he'll get somewhere.

....except that this drama has gone completely off the rails WITHOUT any influence from the viewers, and this isn't the view of Jung-biased shippers, it's also the view of the author of the webtoon.

You may think Park Hae Jin is whatever as an actor or Jung is whatever as a character, but to excuse this gross unprofessionalism and disrespect against him as a condition of the business is beyond ridiculous, given how extreme things have to be for him and Soonkki to be speaking up at all.

This is not nearly as bad as Mirae's Choice. The way the fans derailed Dong Gun's comeback with that drama was painful to watch. And it didn't help matters that the object of that insult is a guy with nothing but good looks and zero acting chops. As for Park hye joon getting upstaged, why should I care when I don't care that much about him as an actor anyway. I'm not of fan of either him or Seo Kang joon. I stated in the beginning that I think Hye Joon isn't the greatest actor. He was just well suited for this role

I should never have weighed in on the discussion about the characters and plot. I usually don't beat those things to death. I notice that the Kdrama watching community spends a lot of energy thinking about character and plot development in a genre that I find to be mostly lacking in those areas. No I don't like the Jung character but he has been interesting to watch up until I realized he's not experiencing any growth. Now I'm just bored with the machinations and don't care how lonely he is. No I don't like PHJ or SKJ as actors either really. PHJ gets a lot of praise for his ability but from what I've observed he's not an actor with great range. SKJ just seems to lack charisma to go along with his pretty face and really hasn't had enough experience for us to see any range from him either. Generally if I comment I stick to particulars about how I feel the actors are performing and don't get too wrapped up in character motivation or plot.

0

I strongly disagree with the idea that Seo Kang-joon doesn't have enough acting experience to make it clear whether he has range or not - Park Bo-gum is the same age as SKJ and has done roughly the same number of projects, and pretty comprehensively established just what his range is.

What's been quite evident from SKJ's projects so far is that the only roles he's capable of are the bad-boy-with-a-heart-of-gold type - which is Baek In-ho in this drama to a T.

Speaking as a fan of Inho in the webtoon (my fave is Seol but Inho is a close second), I'd say SKJ failed to properly project his character in the webtoon. Even from the first episode when he appeared something felt off to me, he was too puppy like and not as I imagined Inho to be. I brushed it off as he was still playing Inho to be likable, I thought I could enjoy his version of Inho just fine.

Then i found out he never bothered reading the source material so now I understand why his character came off weird to me at the start, even when things were going smoothly as far as being generally faithful to the source material, he didn't inject the right nuances, and now that the story has become what it is, he is basically not the Inho that I like from the webtoon. He's evolved into a completely different character.

I'm not sure how far SKJ is to blame for the different interpretation In-ho. Look at LSK and In-ha -- it's absolutely clear that the style of antics has been added by the show-runners, and the actress is simply doing her job there.

Among the main and main supporting characters, almost all of them have been significantly altered and portrayed differently. The only exception is Jung/PHJ, which may have to do with the fact that PHJ actively tried to stick to the webtoon character concept.

You are right. As I said, I find that his portrayal is not as faithful to the characterization in the webtoon. It isn't much of an issue, other than my disappointment after I found out that he didn't bother to read the source material, which is my personal preference as I am a fan of the toon. I understand that he might want to approach it from a fresh perspective based on the drama scripts.

I honestly wouldn't have been that disappointed by it because I did enjoy the drama at the start, until it became clear that he is a completely different character. As a fan of said character I'm just disappointed.

You are right. As I said, I find that his portrayal is not as faithful to the characterization in the webtoon. It isn’t much of an issue, other than my disappointment after I found out that he didn’t bother to read the source material, which is my personal preference as I am a fan of the toon. I understand that he might want to approach it from a fresh perspective based on the drama scripts.

I remember all the discussions about this issue in the "Ice and Fire" adaption "Game of Thrones". I'm not a vivid fan of the source material, but I liked aspects of it well enough and I was very eager to see how HBO tackled this monster.

Some actors were/became absolute experts of their character and everything else in the books; others did actively avoid anything that had to do with the books. Either approach lead to great as well as disappointing performances. Two of the greatest performances came from an "Ice and Fire" nerd and an "Ice and Fire" celibate. Similarly for the rather poor performances. (I'm not saying that the poor/great performances are due to the actors. The screen writing is at least as important ...)

SKJ's portrayal of Show-Inho is relatively consistent, which convinces me that he does a good job here, that he portrays the character in the way that it is written (in the script, not the webtoon, of course). Sure, the character as he plays it has nothing to do with the (Show-)backstory, but that's a writing problem the actor cannot fix on his own.

YES! I watched RoomMate and loved it because we got to see everyone's real personalities come out as they dealt with each other. I was never uncomfortable watching SKG but I was SUPER uncomfortable watching Park Min Woo because it became obvious that he was a bit insecure and prone to jealousy. Lee Dong Wook and Park Kang Joon were the super cool, calm, able guys in the house. PKJ was rather quiet - but always respectful and minding his own business. It was like watching a college drama unfold, when the naturally cool and competent people would rise to the top and others would feel (and act) like victims. Lee Dong Wook tried to gently counsel Park Min Woo to get a grip on himself and grow up and stop being so insecure. I've been eager to see if PMW has made any headway since then. I liked PKJ all the way through RoomMate. He seemed to be an even-tempered, calm and humble guy. It's no surprise to me he's getting a lot of attention. If he can survive the bashing he'll get from this, he'll go far as an actor. Just my two cents.

Anyway, I hope things are changing at least this whole situation can give effective shock therapy to PD to get her back on the right track. I hope at least she tried as possible as she can to make the ending less horrible than what those bad signals implicitly say.

I've got to post one more time. Here's how I see it. The creator sold off her work for a tv show. Her only stipulation was that the drama not end in a similar fashion to how she planned her ending. So at some point the PD shifts the focus more toward Seo Kang Joon. Everyone just assumes that Jung gets the girl because in the webtoon that's the direction it's going. The creator doesn't even seem to care how the drama goes or how it ends as long as they don't spoil her ending.

Everyone is assuming that Jung is the "hero" but from what little I've read in the webtoon, it's more of an ensemble type of story with Seol being the ONLY central character. If that's true then the romantic aspect of the story can go either way, or not at all.

It's not the end of the world and has no effect what so ever on the webtoon fans. Watch or don't watch the ending it's up to you. It's only a tv drama anyway and PHJ still has his own career. He's just another victim of the SKJ effect. lol

I'd agree with the ensemble cast thing if In-ho's ever-increasing screen time didn't come at the expense of Jung's and even Seol's character development. CitT as it is now is the In-ho show.

Crucial scenes were cut to make room for piano playing filler so if it isn't gratuitous, I don't know what is. Even the original webtoon creator Soonkki felt she had to speak up and wash her hands of CJ's plot decisions. That tells you that even she thinks the show had gone astray.

To take a very beloved example from Western entertainment, imagine if they had made the Harry Potter movies and then reduced Harry's screentime to less than ten minutes per movie, while spending the entirety of the story focused on....... Snape.

Do we really think J.K. Rowling's fans would let that go?

But if the story focused on Snape at the expense of Hermione, Ron, etc., other fans (including me) would surely be mad!

It's also like if Peter Jackson had cut most of Frodo's and the rest of the Fellowship's scenes and given them to Aragorn, making it so that he singlehandedly saves Gondor and then personally destroys the Ring on Mount Doom.

It's shilling one character too hard at the expense of the rest, to the point that it's hurting the show and losing the spirit of the original work.

Off-topic: Something like this did happen to Harry Potter, albeit on a smaller scale. Some of Ron's lines and moments were given to Hermione to build her up as more awesome and perfect than she is in the books, at the expense of Ron, who was made to look more like a bumbling sidekick.

@Elle - I remember that! The movies really painted Ron in the worst possible light - not only did he lose several good lines and scenes to Hermione, but he was also made to act wildly out of character (for instance, putting down Hermione in front of Snape).

But it was a fairly minor change compared to the one I suggested re: Harry/Snape ;)

0

Thank you @pogo. That's it. That is why everyone is mad. And yes SJK will bear the burnt of it.

If i didn't see other dramas of the PD i will assume, she is just some rookie PD looking for the big cash.

I am so furious for PHJ not because i am his fan but i see the biggest kind of betrayal, and insensitivity and lack of professionalism done to him.

Actors in the future should be careful of this PD cause this is the height of unprofessional-ism.

As others have pointed out, the PD has made it sound like the higher-ups were the ones behind this. Which means if she's being truthful, it's not right, but if she's not and it was all her, she's basically throwing SKJ under the bus by what she's not saying. This whole thing is...weird.

0

Yes, you can take a well-known and well-loved story and shift focus. For example - Wicked the musical is a resounding success as on stage and as a film - and it's taking the villain or side character and making her the focus.

However the big difference is that it is clearly marketed and presented that way. And there are already adaptations that exist that have stayed close to the sour material.

Not for Cheese in the Trap - which is a very well - loved comic. For its first outing as an adaptation, people will expect to see the story and characters they cherished depicted and not twisted away.

I suppose it was problematic from the start since the actual story is unfinished. Harry Potter might not be a good example maybe Game of Thrones. There certainly has been enough criticism concerning the gratuitous nudity and some minor straying from the characters in the books.

@Dramapanda - There's a huge difference between focus-shifted adaptations/twists on previous novels like Wicked! or even Wide Sargasso Sea, and it's right there in the name - those adaptations are NOT calling themselves The Wizard of Oz or Jane Eyre.

It's entirely different from an adaptation that has the same name, characters and ostensible story as Cheese in the Trap, but derails completely midway.

@TJ - I don't see why the Harry Potter series isn't a good example, because the books were still ongoing when the first movies began production - only four out of seven were available at the time.

Five out of eight movies were released before the final Harry Potter book was published, much like Cheese which has an ending in sight and proceeded with an adaptation before the webtoon ended.

@pogo

That is indeed my point.

You're going to some lengths to find excuses for this treatment, I must say.

Soonkki was originally consulted on the drama, her involvement went beyond just taking a cheque and requesting that the ending be different. She was supposed to be consulted all through (which is why she continued to ask to see the scripts) but ignored by the very team that was supposed to be in communication with her.

Painting this as a case of the creator selling out and having no more right to speak about the representation of her work, is every bit as disingenuous as your insistence that the treatment of Park Hae-jin was just a result of regular editing.

And it's not even about who gets Seol, because Seol herself is getting shortchanged and sidelined in her own story by Baek In-ho using up the screen time to play the piano, walk through the streets to moody music, take out the rubbish, argue with gangsters.....

like someone said, the next episode would probably be about Baek In-ho's bowel movements and some people would still find a way to try and paint that as evidence of Seo Kang-joon's wonderful charisma and talent/

SKJ effect? You mean how after Roommates, he was dubbed as a pretty face with no brain, no personality and can't act to boot? I don't know if you're remembering correctly but he got a bad image after Roommate so idk what "effect" you mean. He certainly had no presence whatsoever.

When I watched this show, I didn't know who the actors were, and was surprised that his acting greatly improved, still, that doesn't warrant your delusion about this whole issue.

Hmm, from what I understood, aside from the stipulation that they not make an ending exactly like the webtoon version, Soonkki also told the PD to remain truthful to the core of the story and characters. After they agreed on that, she then found out (right before filming ep14) that they still planned a very similar ending to the webtoon. So she told told them again to change it.

Also, from what I know, Cheese in the trap is mainly about a college girl named Hong Seol whose life gets entangled with her mysterious, seemingly perfect sunbae, Yoo Jung. That was what actually sold me with the webtoon, that's why I started reading it. I actually haven't read a synopsis that said Seol and her realtionship with the piano genius Inho and her sunbae Jung? So of course I, as a fan, would be concerned if the other supposed lead of the drama just starts to disappear and the story goes nowhere.

I really sympathize with Park Hae Jin. And can't help but feel bad for Seo Kang Joon and Kim Go Eun as well. Imagine all these things filmed and watching them cut out. I imagine it must have felt so weird for Kim Go Eun to be basically filming the same scenes with two different people. She must have been wondering what was going on...

Sigh. Thank you dramabeans for providing an accurately translated and comprehensive review of what's been going on in the Korean media. The snippets we got here and there from various websites have been enlightening, but still confusing. This article sums it up all.

Like my husband said, PD-nim, meet the underside of the bus.

I can't help but have a nagging feeling that there was pressure from the higher-ups, otherwise, if you are a director, creating a work of art, shouldn't you feel proud and stand by your artistic choices? Even when those choices are nonsensical and not supported by the public? No one ever says art is consensus. I don't know if it would make me feel better if the PD said it was her artistic choice to have the characters come out this way, but as viewers (esp. the Korean viewers who pay for the damn cable and watch all the damn ads), we deserve SOME explanation.

I've never been so invested in a drama in my 8 years of watching like this. For ep 1-8, I've watched each episode at least 4 times T_T Now I guess all we can do is pray that Chinese netizens create enough demand for the rich Chinese distributor to buy the uncut version and air it in China. Hey, if they can make Do Minjoon become a non-alien (still don't understand how they were gonna explain his abilities?), they can make Yoojung the character that he really is - complex, and not a complete psycho.

Required fields are marked *

Your nagging feelings might actually be right since the PD pretty much said as much, that to get answers, you have to ask higher ups. Then she went to say that she can only answer off the record. As to WHY higher ups would want to ruin a good script that has been getting good responses to accmodate more SKJ scenes, no one knows. Because it certainly isn't because people are so in love with Baek Inho, his character got some good responses but not to the level where people actually want the story to be about him instead of Seol and Jung, but that's what's happening now. So yeah speculation are now rife.

First Answer me 1988, now this. If drama land thinks this is some new trend it needs to adopt (pissing off viewers of a popular show with really annoying plot developments) it better stop now. Also just when cheese in the trap was about to prove that Korea may after all be able to do decent adaptations faithful to the original, things start going downhill. Now I'm wondering if I should bother watching this past ep 13. Also, why Lee Yoon Jung??!! This is the woman who made Coffee Prince

One last post before I go to work (yes, I wake up early so I can air my grievances about a drama -_-): I wish this was bad from the beginning like Tomorrow Cantabile. I was a crazy loyal fan of the Nodame franchise (manga, anime, jdrama, you name it), but was able to drop the kdrama adaptation after 2 eps or so because I saw right away it was going nowhere good. CiTT, on the other hand, was SO good up until ep 8.
I am the mouse, the drama is both the cheese and the trap. Goddamnit.

There are many issues here...that's why this drama behind the drama is huge...
-PHJ ended filming many major YJ scenes with Seol, Dad and some childhood scenes too...but the director cut most of them off and even mad SKJ re-shoot some of them "with same lines" and aired them instead.
-tvN usually sends the cast of hit dramas to vacations...same with CIT but the production team didn't bother inviting PHJ even if they knew he's busy.
-They only contacted Soonki after ep6 and she expressed her anger over two things...shifting the plot direction to a love triangle and spoiling her unfinished webtoon ending.
-K-netizens (24000+ upvotes) and Chinese fans are mad and frustrated...cos PHJ refused the role multiple times and when he finally accepted he read the webtoon 3 times to figure the character yet his scenes got thrown in trash not to mention the drama was sold with record price for his name...they demanded explanation...but the director answer was "not now!" which lead to more rage...yesterday PHJ finally said that he trusts nothing anymore...which means something serious is happening that lead a calm person like him to speak up.
-The PD apparently did the same thing in Triple with Lee Jung Jae.
-SKJ is being attacked now and some are assuming he has sponsor cos he got a male lead role in Hwajung before and now this...it's crazy but it could ruin his career if not handled well.

This whole mess is the result of stupid editing...now everyone is mad and hurt not to mention the drama is screwed!!!

But Reply 88 is an actual ensemble drama with multiple heroes and heroines. Taek, Sun-woo, and Dong-ryong were also lead characters on the same level as Jung-hwan.

Also, I don't think the production crew of that drama mistreated and disrespected RJY (and for that we must be thankful!)

The whole scandal of CitT is a totally different level of shadiness.

0

Required fields are marked *

Stop with that already. PD Shin Won-ho was clear before the drama even began that Answer Me 1988 was a family drama, and an ensemble - it didn't revolve around a single love line. And for what it's worth, Jung-hwan isn't less of a protagonist because he didn't get the girl, though the drama was at fault for leading people to believe Jung-hwan would be the husband at first.

And let's not even go into the difference between the treatment of the actors here.

As someone who has never read the webtoon - or even had a clue about it - I have to throw in my two cents.

I came into this drama totally clean, with no preconceived notions and I have enjoyed it for the most part. But glaring inconsistencies continued to bug me. In Ha's character is cartoonish at best, not likely to function in reality. The other characters seemed more "normal" and true to life, creating a contrast with her. It was weird.

Not knowing the story at all, I'm one of the few viewers who LIKES the development with In Ho. I've always liked SKJ but never saw him really act before this. Because I'm one of the few who gets annoyed that second leads NEVER get the girl, I've been cheering on the possibility that Seol and In Ho would end up together. That's just me.

HOWEVER, PHJ's open comments and now reading about the controversy has really put a spin on it. Now I'm less invested or interested in the drama and more interested in the backstory and complications at the production level. I'm very involved in the Hollywood scene here in America (in the screenwriting and production sides) and I know first-hand how complicated and political everything is...how egos get wounded and get revenge, how power plays can take everyone down with them. EVERYTHING happens in production and EVERYTHING results from there. Editors wield tremendous power, especially if they are pals with the director.

Now, I really love surface Cheese in the Trap for its complications, because I'm intrigued by the complexity underneath. Not just your typical drama. The ratings are likely to go through the roof as people tune in to see what happens.

Thank you for this post. You could also explain about post production and how the "higher ups" influence everything from casting, to what ends up on the cutting room floor. Many a director has refused to put their names to some of their biggest productions because the studio stepped in and made changes they didn't like. Not only is this not considered "unprofessional" it's just the way business is done. Sometimes it works sometimes it backfires and I can remember once that it bankrupted a studio, the movie was Heaven's Gate.

@lunatic4kd

You are entitled to enjoy the drama as it is, especially as you haven't read the webtoon. But I would just point out that why the webtoon took the attention of the production company, was because it becomes so insanely popular with readers, such that they knew if they made the show, they could tap into its wide readership. And known they had the potential viewing numbers, brought in the funding.

Hence, since they capitalised on the webtoon's success and utilised its fan base to launch the production, it is not unreasonable that they also would play into the readers' expectations. There is therefore a real miscalculation that they could exploit the popularity of the webtoon and yet be entirely unaccountable to its fans. Hence the fans' outrage.

I feel like Park Hae Jin is slowly dying now.
And I feel bad for Seo Kang Joon, now PHJ's fans is bashing him. I mean its not really his fault, he is just following the script. And even more bad this is the one where he actually good at it, but whats with controversy now?
I hope it doesn't ruin the cast feeling for each other though.
I've been waiting for this drama since I love the webtoon so much. And when PHJ is leading I was like sooo happy. But now they cutting his screen time? SKJ is maybe better than before now, but I still love PHJ more.

PHJ is definitely being very diplomatic where trying to express his honest thoughts. I think it really sucks that he anticipated one thing when accepting this project, yet it turned out to be quite different than he imagined and not in a positive way. =( It is certainly no fault of his and he played Yoo Jung perfectly, highlighting that duality and keeping viewers intrigued about his past and why he operates in such a way.

Personally, I do like SKJ's character more cuz I guess BIH was portrayed to sway the viewers to his side and gaining their sympathy. And SKJ did a great job for his part. And I am more drawn to BIH cuz YJ is actually hard for me to relate to in terms of his thought process and actions. It's unlikely I'd be friends with someone like YJ in real life, but BIH no problem. However, I did get the sense that BIH was given a more favourable interpretation than YJ in the drama.

I have only read the webtoon via LINE and not oddsquad/naver, so I don't know the latest storyline. But the portion I read didn't have BIH as such a warm, relatable character, which could be part of the disconnect between webtoon and drama. To be honest, I've been hesitant to comment on the two latest recaps cuz I saw so much discussion/displeasure happening. I like SKJ and PHJ, and though I like drama BIH more than YJ, I didn't think YJ's story should be slashed/sacrificed in any way.

Also, I have no issues with adaptations from original source to another medium. But it's problematic when you claim it's faithful to the source, yet it isn't, and to the point where Soonkki felt it was time to speak up, that definitely means something isn't right. Not to mention, PHJ sharing his views as well. If your main lead can't wrap his head around why certain important scenes that were filmed were edited out, that is a problem. And it doesn't seem to be minor stuff. That's probably why it's been a bit strange in the plot development as if something is missing or skewed. I don't know if this has anything to do with the planned ending that was too similar to Soonkki's and now they are forcing some kinda change to have an alternate ending. In any case, PHJ is an amazing actor and I hope he isn't too hard on himself for this project. He did the best he could already and gave us YJ in the flesh. =)

But reading all of this I'm kinda disappointed, bc even liking PHJ, I have a love/hate relationship with him, and that's probably because the way the drama conducted things. If they have gone deeper in the character, he was definitly going to be my fave one.

I had given up on watching this drama quite a while but would read recaps on and off to see if storyline had improved. Just seemed to slide further and further away from comprehension. I think it's unprofessional regardless of whether the buck stopped with her, because it seems like he was not informed and his character was screwed over in ways that defy basic storytelling logic. This is the kind of shit Im Sung-han (Princess Aurora writer) would pull lol.

idk. It was never going to reinvent the trendy genre imo, but when it ran with the source material it seemed like it actually got people to talk about things besides OTPs and ~second lead syndrome and pretty boys--just taking a peak at the recaps I could see that. This really sucks. And I'm not Park Hae-jin's biggest fan, but I feel for the guy, all the more because he seemed very committed to the project and based on the first week, he was the only cast member besides Kim Go-eun that showed signs of life and seemed to "get" his character.

Ooh, they finally covered it here in Dramabeans. I was hoping they would so I can read their take on the matter. Thanks, JB, for the insight.

These past few days have been really upsetting for CitT fans. I am glad though that the stink that the knetz made lead to media focus on the issue. Which then lead certain camps to give statements regarding the matter. I would want to hear tvN's side on the matter, as well as a full explanation from the PD (if she really did have much of a hand in this).

Really, this drama for me was good until episode 8. After that, the story started getting unfocused - unexplained storylines, switched scenes, hardcore promotion of the love triangle and missing leads. It is sooo frustrating to see all that potential go to waste. I feel so sorry for soonkki, the cast and the crew who got dragged through this mess. Park Hae Jin!!! :( ..I hope they find strength. As they will still be promoting soon and will also be doing the post interview rounds.

This is such a mess. Too bad, really.

It didn't need to devolve into this -- it almost feels greedy. They figured out a way to make the crazy live shooting changes on pre-shot footage. That explains the spliced feel to some of the scenes and the overall flow.

I did not read the webtoon, but now fully intend to do so because I want to see what the characters were really like. And so I can envision in my mind how the actors would have handled them.

PHJ is capable of bringing forward this character so it was a shame not to see it. PSJ did a great job with In Ho which should be a shining moment for him and now that is tainted.

Such the mess!

So, where can I read the webtoon with English subs? Anyone know? I am sure there are tons of you who do. :)

How bad would an actor feel to make him said that even he didn't know how his work going to end and have to wait for it to be broadcast to see the result. Sigh~

Its not about Yoo Jung or about In Ho anymore, its about how the drama has been shown so far. Too many dots didn't connect well. Too many things didn't get explain well.

I thought I'm the only one who think like that until I read dramabeans recap and the comments yesterday. I'm disappointed on how this drama became. That thing that makes me feel like dying every single second at the end of an episode and the nerves while waiting for the next episode being air has gone.

Since next week is going to be the last two episode, I'm still going to watch it. I just hope, really hope that this drama would do something so remarkably good twist that no matter what the ending would be is going to leave its viewers with satisfactions.

This is so sad. At first really I don't understand (when I read the comments) where all the hate is coming from. At first I think its just because of ship wars and after AM1994, I don't want another one. I don't care much about how the story deviates from the manhwa (which I am reading as well) its still watchable. Though I must admit I want more Jung. I told my friend that there's no second lead syndrome for me here.
I was happy to learn that I get to see a pre-produced drama thinking that the quality will be better and will not be influenced by any external factors, but now.. I don't. Without this mess I could have just accepted that the drama just steered that way.. but but.. sigh..
Its just sad that I've been promoting this with my sister and friends. Heck even my Facebook's cover page is CITT.

Whoa, things sure escalated quickly. This is coming from someone who's actually enjoying CITT even in the latest episodes. (Granted, I'm not that invested on the show either. I'm just watching it casually without putting too much thought into it.) I had no idea that there is so much controversy surrounding it.

PHJ has my sympathy. Also, I think knetz need to cool it with the SKJ hate. I feel bad for him for having been made as a scapegoat in this fiasco. I really doubt he had control over the filming/editing process. Guy's just following orders. How sad. And he's just starting to endear himself to me a lot lately for his performance as Baek In Ho...

Hopefully KGE won't completely rule out doing dramas in the future because of this mess.

I actually have a different thought tbh.

I hope KGE will stay away from dramaland and thrive in film industry, reach a status ala Jeon DoYeon/Jun JiHyun and only then thinking about making a drama comeback. The way, dramaland wont dare to fuck her up~
I always prefer my favorite actor/actress doing film than drama tbh.

Kim Go-eun actually made her name in the movies first, before venturing to dramaland she was a highly acclaimed and versatile young actress.

Considering that this is her experience of her first drama, I would not blame her at all for staying away - the production had to work really hard to convince her to do it at all (she rejected the role once before confirming), and Chungmuro would welcome her back with open arms.

I agree that a long break from dramas would do her well. But she's still young, there may be great opportunities out there and some of them may come knocking in the form of a drama series.

oh yes, if someone like Ahn Pan-seok came calling, I'd tell her to run, not walk, and grab the offer with both hands! Or even a more commercial but skilled writer like Park Hae-ryun or Park Ji-eun, if they offered her a role that was actually worth her time.

She's a true chameleon and adapts quite well to a pretty wide range of roles, I'd love to see what she does after Seol.

I have donwloaded the whole of the episodes so far. I'm at episode 6 already. I do not have any idea at all what the webtoon is like. But, even at episode 6, I have this very weird sense that something's not right with it. And this article came out and curiosity got the better of me. Now I know what that weird feeling was about.

Maybe in some other time, I will watch the rest of the episodes.

Ugh I recommended this one to my friends but now seeing how its hit rock bottom idk what to say. The entire cast must be scarred by all of this. Poor PHJ and even more poor SKJ who's going to be hearing lots of bad things for a while. The PD needs to explain ASAP

sighh..no wonder i've seen bts that are not in the drama. I'M TRULY DISSAPPOINTED withe the character study. the production should show positive self-growth for all character, especially jung , inho n inha. the way i see it up until next week preview, i suspect the moral story of this show is self destruction for three of them. sigh..when i just grow to like in ha when she stood up for jae woo,hehe..

up until ep 12, i grow to like in-ha character, hoping to see her positive self-development, but until next week preview, it seem the director want to stick her with the 'victim mentality arc'. it is a waste though. up until ep 12, i thought both inha n inho would be knights guarding yoo jung with good intention, but it seems they were made to be obsess to kick anyone who closer to yoo jung. i wonder why the production side want both inha n inho to be self-destruct until the end.

it's OK if they want to give more screen time to inho,BUT his character should be positively going into self growth development. and i hope to see him stop saying 'why are u doing this to me' , 'leave us alone' to yoo jung. SOMEHOW next week preview really shot me down. inho continue with his victim mentality still saying 'leave us alone'. u are the character that should take a leave.
the conclusion is, the production side want to show self-destruction to all characters, when seol is ok,they try to kill her with accident. WHAT???!!!

YIKES.

After all this, they're going to do a cast outing? It's going to be awkward as hell, whether or not Park Hae-jin is present...... but then that is the PD's own fault.

I'm not sure if they'll push through but I guess it's all scheduled already? Maybe the PD didn't really care if Hae Jin won't be there. Heck, they even didn't confirm with him or his manager properly lol. What is up with that?

I cannot believe a bunch of creative people could not come up with their own storyline or AU ending. What is so hard to write IH died fighting the gangster who kidnap Seol. Jung agree to go to therapy by himself and also Seol. In Ha has gone mental after In Ho death and is admitted to a mental hospital where she met Lee Kwang Soo who adore her and her therapist is Gong hyo Jin. They also attend group therapy with Seol, YJ, in ha, ji sung and Lee Kwang Soo. Seol and YJ are living together and being cute and loving and if YJ dad don't like Seol he can play by himself at his own mansion. No grandkids for him. The end! Find!

People fail to see that it wasn't only PHJ that got hurt, but other actors too.

Jung had a scene with his father - Got cut, both actors suffered.

Jung had a scene with Seol- PHJ and KGE also got hurt by it, because her screen time also suffered.

Child actors filmed a scene where they never showed - the child actors hard work was wasted.

This isn't just PHJ suffering, but the other actors too, everyone worked hard and the PD just decided to cut it without explaining or warning them.

The pd is SKJ biased, this is clear.

Even SKJ is being hurt by it. Because people are starting to dislike him and think there is something fishy about it.

Gawd. And i thought i was being too sensitive with the minimal amount of screen time Yoojung got. I even felt like the drama probably just wanted to show us some Inho story and never intended to neglect Yoojung. Now this changes things a lot. This is not just one unhappy actor speaking out (which btw, is already powerful enough considering the South Korea culture of being politically correct). Even the writer is speaking out. I was still holding onto that tiny glimpse of hope that the final two episodes can miraculously deliver. I remember being very upset by the pace of Kill Me Heal Me as well, not knowing how they will utilise the 7th personality. And i recalled the last episode being incredibly rushed, but at least it explained and wrapped everything up nicely, and gave everyone a happy ending. I am praying for this kind of miracle for CITT, at the very least. It'd of course be better if we could get more.

Sigh. And you know things are really bad when Javabeans wrote an article about it.

I have this thought though. Could this controversy be created to increase the sales of the DVD? The DVD includes more scenes of Yoojung that PHJ apparently spoke about in his interview. Especially since WM Company is the one releasing the DVD and kind of started this controversy as well. But then again, why create a problem just to sell a product? Ugh, i don't know anymore. Just trying to find some excuse for all that's going on.

Really upset, as well, for them leaving PHJ out for the vacation. I find it difficult to believe that an established company like TVN will make mistakes like ‘I tried to tell you the plans, but the news came out first.’ At this point, I wish all the actors will boycott the vacation.

The DVD and photo book was going to be released to celebrate PHJ's 10 years celebration in the industry, and it's been a long time plan if am not mistaken. And no, I do not think this is for the sake of raking the sales of the DVD.

As you might have read other comments that it is very rare that an actor in South Korea would go this length to say something about the drama that work that they do, so this must be a pretty big deal for him to brave himself like this. Knowing there are consequences that he could be outcasted from the industry.

I marathoned CITT just this weekend because of the good reviews and ratings so I can watch the last 2 eps real time. And this happens TT

I haven't read the webtoon, and frankly in the first few eps, I found it hard to connect to Jung. But I was intrigued. PHJ was giving me the same vibe of the psychopath character he had in Bad Guys, and I think he was doing a great job if I could catch the nuance that the lead is not what he seems. It was disconcerting, but fresh in k dramaland. I took to In Ho's character first, since the show made him more warm (and therefore more human than Jung) but I was more curious about Jung's character.

(Am just in Ep 9) but I was excited for the show explaining how Jung is the way he is in the next eps for me to (start) loving his character too, since he's not the typical male lead. How do you fall for someone as different and atypical as Jung? But now I'm reading that the show hasn't done it justice.

Argh.. the what could have been. I feel sad for PHJ and SKJ. It looks to me that it's the PD's re-interpretation of the story that is the problem.

Now I don't know if I should continue watching or not. I probably will, just to see how bad it gets. Am ready for it to leave a bad taste in my mouth, unless the PD can pull off a miracle for the last 2 eps.

I was so hoping for CIIT to hook me so I can forget (a little) my broken heart post Reply 1988 XP

I've been trying to think about why the shift of focus to In-ho hasn't really bothered me in the same way as it has bothered everyone else. And I think it's because the Jung character lost me a while ago and my feelings towards the Seol-Jung relationship ranged from ambivalent to yikes this is toxic.

I am however invested in In-ho's growth, I want to see this guy get over his traumas and do well despite being related to In-ha and being chased by gangsters. My favourite scene in the drama is even with the dreaded piano where In-ho screws up Seol's favourite song only to have her pick it up again before breaking out into chopsticks.

tl;dr I lost interest in Seol and Jung's relationship and liked In-ho a lot. The plot change doesn't bother me as much.

hasn't SKJ got a movie in which he is a piano player? I think the pd keeping her silence is too suspicious to be overlooked. My theory: under-table money has changed the pivotal character from Jung to Inho to advertise for KSJ upcoming movie. Inho plays A LOT OF piano in the drama which makes me sick.

I, for one, am reassured by PHJ's popularity in Mainland China because this step he has taken is a difficult one, and surely not without backlash. Should things go awry on his end, he would at least have a welcoming market to fall back to.

Like Javabeans, I also was 100% hopeful that the story would turn around and had trusted that the screenwriters/PD did everything in the past few eps for a reason. I have read through the negative comments after watching the latter episodes and thought that some people were just hardcore shippers of the Seol x Jung couple and wasn't sure why they felt so threatened by In Ho's story...

After reading all this, that changed my mind. Seeing YJ's character, which to me was the more (if not MOST)interesting part of the drama, being cut out and edited really makes me concerned about the overall drama's integrity. One of the reasons I was hooked right away was because of the mystery of his character and now that we're on episode 14 and still got nothing, I see why PHJ is also concerned. I don't know YJ's backstory...I don't know anything really except for my own interpretation. There has to be more to why his father would want to adopt two other kids to "watch" over YJ. Anyway...no development in this area whatsoever.

I have to give kudos to all the actors though, they did a good job with CIIT and it isn't their fault the way the editing happened...Park Hae Jin especially did a phenomenal job and he portray the "psychopath"-like character in a different way from his Bad Guys character especially in the thief/back alley scene that scared Seol. bring that back! He has great facial expression switching from different moods and his tone of voice was on point. I'm not saying this because I'm PHJ biased.

Anyway, I hope they figure this thing out because despite all this, I'll be in it till the end since CIIT is the drama that got me out of my kdrama hiatus. Last two episodes, let's GO!

I am back again. This is my final one. I am less angry but still angry.

PD LEE you better have a very very very very good explanation on why this is soo, or a boycott will be underway for any of your future projects.

SJK you also better come clean why you would accept to re-do a scene that your fellow actor has already done, without looking greedy?

PD LEE were you paid by SJK's agency to give him more screen time or what?

PHJ, we love you and we have your back. Be careful of who you trust in the future.

SJK, i do not want to see your face in anymore dramas for the time being. I have seen enough of your face and piano in CITT.

What can we do apart from complaining? I hate being tied down and not do anything.

Now, now, let us please not jump to conclusions. I get that the people are all for sympathizing with PHJ right now. I do too. However, SKJ is also at a severe disadvantage here, publicity-wise.

It's good that PHJ has spoken out about the issue, however, it's unlikely that a newbie actor like SKJ will be given the same luxury. It's just that he is not in any position to oppose. He's not the one calling the shots.

I don't know about powerful sponsors or personal bias or whatever since all of that is merely fan speculation at this point, but if anyone's at fault, it's the higher-ups.

tl;dr - No one knows the real deal as of now. Playing the blame game on anyone least of all to the actors who had no control over the situation is just unwarranted.

The best people to clear this issue are the drama reps themselves. I find it very unethical to let the actors get so much flak because of their screw-ups.

Wait, what do you expect him to do? Say no? That's ridiculous. He was hired to do a job and did what he was told. He has no say in what he films. He just does what's in the script. And how does he know these scenes were filmed before? It's unfair to blame him or expect him to answer for why the PD/higher ups changed the plot of the drama.

This doesn't mean there was bad blood on set! I think if we're going to start speculating we need to look at why SKJ is being promoted over PHJ despite Jung's scenes being more important to the story.

I don't want SKJ to get backlash because this isn't on HIM personally, but something is up. Even the PD's statements are fishy.
