Descended writer attached to Man to Man, Park Hae-jin in talks to star

Before we get too excited: No, not writer Kim Eun-sook, and no, Park Hae-jin has not confirmed yet. What we do know is that Park Hae-jin is still in contention to headline JTBC’s Man to Man, which has brought on Descended From the Sun’s second writer, Kim Won-seok, whose other drama credits are Queen’s Classroom and Friend, Our Legend.

Man to Man is about a longtime celebrity who comes to need a bodyguard, with Park Hae-jin up to play the role of the bodyguard with a background in special investigations. That’s literally the one-line premise, but I did read previous mentions of bromance, so I expect we’ll be getting bonding and growth and a pair of strong performances. I don’t know what kind of character the top star will be, but I imagine the drama will have to cast a pretty big star, to match Park Hae-jin — right now, he’s about as big as you can get. Well, maybe aside from Kim Soo-hyun. Heyo, You From Another Star reunion!

When the drama was first announced, there was no writer or director attached, but I have to think Descended From the Sun’s incredible success has fast-tracked this writer’s career, and he’s been on the receiving end of a lot of interest and lovecalls for his next project. The writer reportedly took a meeting in secret with Park Hae-jin recently to discuss the drama; Park’s management confirmed that he is considering positively, but that there is no synopsis or script yet.

Man to Man doesn’t have a director attached yet, but the production house is one with a number of well-made, critically acclaimed shows like Secret Love Affair, Painter of the Wind, and A Wife’s Credentials. It doesn’t have a scheduled timeslot, although JTBC intends to air it toward the end of the year.

After CITT, I expect him to get a nice drama. I mean, everyone is giving him some love for what happened with the cut scenes and all that.
But JTBC has such low ratings...

Ahhh, so it wasn't Kim Eun-sook who met up with PHJ but the second writer instead? A month ago, there was a rumor that PHJ met up with DOTS writer and everyone assumed it was Kim Eun-sook. This makes absolute sense now.

I'm excited to see if they'd cast a female lead or not. JTBC is not public broadcast; I hope they just focus on the bromance and story. Meandering to romance is many good drana's downfall. I have high hopes with this channel.

Glad that I'm not the only one who prefers a story instead of romance. A romance is fine, as long as it doesn't ruin the story. I've dropped many dramas because the stories are ruined with the lovey-dovey scenes for the fan services.

Regarding the story, could 'a longtime celebrity' means that it was an old one? Like an ahjussi level ? It's gonna be the old-young bromace kinda type then. If it is a young one, I wonder who's gonna be the star coz casting a young star with the same charisma as PHJ is gonna cost a lot.

I hope PHJ confirms soon, since I'm dying to know his next project.

Ditto for the first paragraph!

I’m glad it is another writer not KES. Even though I haven’t watched any of his dramas I have read his writing skill is good that is what KES lacks for me. I have read people’s praises for Friend, our Legend and QC for writing not for the hype.

And for the actor who will play idol, can he be Shin SungRok. Like really really… He would be great for the role since he knows how to sing and knows the stage, he is a musical actor after all. So why not, why not. More importantly he knows how to act and can be a quirky, clumsy, grumpy and even goofy “giant” idol who is afraid of things and needs a bodyguard. Oh I can imagine this… oh please, pliiiiiissss. Well, I would watch this even if KES is the writer!!!!

If Park Hae Jin attached to this project then I'm GLAD if the writer is NOT Kim Eun Sook.
I never been able to enjoy her drama after Lovers in Prague sooooo many years ago.
Even the much hype DotS failed to capture my interest. >_<

Yes! I'm VERY GLAD it's not KES. Yes KES can guarantee ratings and popularity, but her story is horrible. Always similar male and female lead. DOTS is actually a bit better than her previous works.

Well people have different taste and personal preference. As for me and lots of people I know really love KES dramas. I think it's too much to say her story is horrible (as if it's a fact) just because you personally do not like it. Your taste is yours alone but that doesn't make her writing horrible just because her story do not fit want you like. Especially since so many people love her works. I respect your opinion since different people, different taste. But I find her dramas like Lovers in Paris, Lovers in Prague, Lovers, On Air, City Hall, Secret Garden, A Genteleman's Dignity and DOTS are all good drama. I have watch all this drama and I like them all.

Yes everyone can have different taste and different opinion. I'm sorry if I offend you, to this date none of KES' dramas convince me she's a good writer. She can write highly rated and highly popular shows because she throws in popular tropes, cliches, with charming (most of the time jerk) male lead and damsel-in-distress female lead. It works for entertainment purpose, but when you look back and reflect on her shows, it's nothing other than pretty and flashy drama.

This actually sounds interesting, though, and haha, Do Min-joon manager/bodyguard should totally become the big star for Park Hae-jin to protect and hey, the more bromance, the better! I'm already picturing Park Hae-jin in suit and ties and ugh, yes please! Plus, he'd be kicking ass and protecting his bud? Yaaaaasssss!

Basically I need Park Hae Jin in any drama or movie. My severe scar from CITT is still raw and bleeding excessively. As for now I am trying to heal it by watching My Daughter, Seoyoung over and over again.
And... I want to watch him play lighter character. I don't mind him a bit cheesy or anything.

Me too! It's too bad because I loved the OST. And I like OSTs in general because they remind me of the drama they're associated with along with all the emotions. Good thing I didn't buy it. I hope that one day, I can at least watch 1-8 without feeling like I'm being stabbed in the chest.

Good idea. I thought about reading the webtoon but it seems too time-consuming. But if all the In-ho parts are cut out...

Sad that SFD is over... Next week will be empty.

Yea she brings ratings and yea she writes shows that can be entertaining, but they are on the cheesy side. And I kinda want PHJ to stay away from cheese...

I get the impression he's looking for a good project though, not rock star status or being made into a sensation.

And by 'good project' I mean something with a story and a complex character that challenges you as an actor.

I'm so glad I'm not in the same boat as all the avid CITT fans. I was lucky enough to watch him in Bad Guys literally a week before CITT started so the most memorable of his performances for me has been that show. Which he and all the actors were PHENOMENAL in, I recommend it strongly.

I'm excited to see him in a drama that has a bromance and camaraderie focus, I hope he accepts the project (though I suspect he's a little hesitant for fear of being burned). The bromance elements in Bad Guys really made me love him, so if he signs on it'll be like that x100000.

And, ngl, even though I'm loving Descendants I'm glad its not the main writer. After she wrote heirs I'm completely afraid of her and her plots. That said some people are really into them, so to teach their own, in the end.

TL;DR I'm so excited and hopeful and generally optimistic about this whole endeavor.

Now that you mentioned Bad Guys, can it be Ma Dong Seok who stars with him in this? I think it'd be fun.

MDS can be the kinda-crazy star trying to escape curfew and stuff and PHJ the straightforward security guy trying to keep his charge from trouble. ^^

I love Ma Dong Seok too ! He was awesome in Bad Guys, all big and scary-looking but actually is soft and cuddly.

Unfortunately, he'll be in 38 Task Force with Seo In Guk and Soo young, unless they're filming this one later, it's a no then.

Me too....watched My Daughter Seo Yeoung and fastforwarded to all the sweet parts with him and his story, then went to watch his Chinese drama "Far Away Love", but couldn't continue beyond Ep 2, because of the annoying overacting of the female lead, and Sunbae's new strange squeaky dubbed voice. He was beautiful in the show though.

"there is no synopsis or script yet"

Personally, after CITT, that would make me worry. I would want a full script in my hands. A movie would be a much more solid bet right now, since you would have a much better sense of what you kind of role you'd be getting and what kind of story.

After CITT, wouldn't it better to live shoot tho?
Because CITT was pre-produced. He receive the full script, even shoot it but they didn't include some of the scenes that he already shoot...

0

Required fields are marked *

not really, the first half of CITT was pre-produced and it was great.

It's the post-Lunar New Year episodes that rushed through production in much the way a live shoot would (despite actually finishing up weeks ahead of the air dates) and had the PD basically writing him out of his own drama.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

*sigh*

The issue with CITT wasn't that it was pre-produced but partially pre-produced and then handled (terribly) like a live-shoot.

Pre-produced doesn't mean either amazing or terrible drama, it just means you've got your script done, your roles written and everything filmed, edited and polished when the first episode goes on air – meaning you (normally) don't suddenly start changing things b/c of audience reactions, ratings, sponsors, celebrity scandals or whatever.

If you're an actor being cast, and already have a full script in your hands that you know WILL STAY THAT WAY with a director, writer and producers with a good track record, you will know much better what you're working with. Of course, the 'success' of such a pre-produced work isn't certain but at least you know that your drama isn't going to start falling apart after half its run, characterisation will not start being inconsistent or later episodes won't suddenly be full of filler material ('summary scenes', excessive use of flashbacks) because there isn't enough time to film/story to tell anymore.

If I had to compare it, I'd say a live-shoot is like an exam you write on the spot within a limited time frame, a pre-produced drama is a take-home assignment you can polish to perfection. You can have good & bad results both ways, but chances for a masterwork are higher with the latter.

In fact, I just rewatched the first few episodes earlier with a friend, been listening to the OST everyday, and awaits the new S4 chapter every wednesday even if I only understand half of it.

Now, hopefully Kim Go-eun will do some small screen project again after her well-deserved rest.

The Queen's Classroom was a lovely, highly underrated show, and also one that was refreshing free of drama cliches. If Kim Won-Seok is the writer, and Jtbc is the channel, there's a chance for this to be different and interesting, and to maybe even take some risks (is it too much to ask to have a legit LBGT story in a k-drama?).

I'll give it a go. Is anyone else curious about what episodes or parts this writer did in DOTS and what KES did? Also, why did they bring in a secondary writer for a 16 episode drama in the first place? I'm just curious.

I'm sure PHJ wants to strike while the irons hot with either a drama or a movie so I hope this works out for him. I respect him for speaking out regarding CITT, and he must have felt really screwed to do so because it can go either way in k-drama world.

I, for once, am excited that KES is /not/ the DOTS writer in question. I find her works mediocre and am convinced that what I want to see from PHJ/what PHJ wants himself, she cannot deliver. On the other hand, I've heard great things about writer KWS that indicate that his writing ability doesn't stop at audience pandering. This whole project sounds promising and I hope PHJ accepts if just for me to stare at his face some more later this year.

Let's hope the drama's pre-produced.

I'm excited and not excited for this. I love the writer's work (Queen's Classroom is so good as was Friends) and off course I adore PHJ. I'm not so sure about the story. It has potential but still need more info. If we've learned anything Hae Jin, let's wait on the producers and director maybe even a rough script outline before signing on LOL.
