Drama viewership ratings for the week of Feb. 29–Mar. 6, 2016

We’ve seen some shows start out strong and only get stronger, but Descended From the Sun is breaking records with its quick rise to the top. Not only did it break the 20% mark, it broke it at week two, and with room to spare—episode four netted an absolutely crazy 24.1%. At the rate it’s going, I wonder where the ceiling is, or if there will be one at all.

So while Descended is only beginning, Cheese in the Trap had its much-contested final episodes this past week, and the sudden single point jump in ratings for the last episode is likely due to the controversy surrounding it. Still, a shame that people might’ve tuned in more out of curiosity than the love that generated such an impressive viewership in the first place. Hopefully dramaland learns from this.

Otherwise, Signal continues to do extremely well, and Moorim School continues to do poorly. Come Back, Ajusshi and One More Happy Ending are facing some of the stiffest competition with Descended, even though all three shows are enjoyable in their own right. Ratings always seem to favor the sleekest and slickest of them all though, as long as they deliver enough on the crack factor.

Signal is amazing. It's great that its fantastic ratings are actually a reflection of and in proportion to its quality.

And surprisingly, Mrs Cop 2's first episode was actually very good (especially when you consider the narrative disaster that was its first season). I caught the ep while waiting for Signal subs last night, and although it's very early days, it's got something.

I can't believe there's only a week of Signal left :( Where did the time go?

Good! I'm curious how evil Bummie can be.. hehehe

I just FF to his parts b/c I was wondering how he'd play the villain (compared to Namgung Min and Yoo Ah-In) and I like it.

I enjoyed Mrs Cop2 too. Didn't catch the first one but this one was a good watch.

It changed my drama preference to new heights and I'm afraid I'll take a break from watching dramas coz I'm pretty sure that I'll just end up comparing its quality to this drama however I try to avoid it.

Cheese got good tv ratings for its finale, but the online ratings plunged almost 20 percent in the final two weeks - they ended at 67 percent, which was the lowest for any episode of the entire drama.

Here to join the signal is amazing wave. Great production, hardly a wasted scene in the whole series (except for those hilarious PPL inserts) and so so many great actors. The whole show seemed to know its way and its pace from the start. Can't wait for next week!

I find the PPL hilarious too -- it's so jarring that it just turns into comedy. Someone on the Signal thread had the theory that the PD makes the PPL really in-your-face on purpose, like he wants to keep it separate from his otherwise lovingly crafted show.

DOTS is currently Descending to the Top.
Pretty happy Song Song Couple delivered one of the biggest ratings hit this year (if not the biggest), despite their cheesy loveline and LTE romance. Mama Kim Eun Sook must be happy she could fill her pockets with $$$$.

Obviously they spend a lot of $$$$ but they'll also get much more $$$$$ in return. If they keep the story as it is or even better I can see it being one of the most popular Korean drama this year. They'll get to sell it at the highest price to other countries.

It's the biggest of the year, if not the last several years. YFAS didn't break 30% and DoTS is outpacing it. It's hilarious going back and reading the bad comments about how it's going to do horrible and SJK will be stuck in a terrible dud. I know people don't like KES dramas here (though they can't stop watching them), but I'm amazed anyone thought it would flop.

Well done Signal! I guess that it's a good sign that tvN will continue to lure in movie actors for their cable dramas. Jo Jin Woong is becoming a regular on tvN which makes me happy. I can watch him on cable and on the big screen with 2 movies coming out this year.
It has been a long 4 year break for Director Park Chan Wook so I'm really really looking forward to The Handmaid with Jo Jin Woong,Ha Jung Woo, Kim Min Hee, etc.

Looking forward to the queen of Chungmuro Jeon Do-Yeon in The Good Wife. I'd be happier if they could switch Jo Jin Woong from Entourage to Good Wife. I don't have a good feeling about that show. Maybe he'll decline and take a break.

Song Joong Ki <3. DOTS's rating is kind of like the beginning of Tree with deep Roots. He was only in it for 4 eps but the ratings doubled by the 3rd and 4th eps.
I am happy that the ratings is doing well although I don't think this show itself deserves it.
I'm looking forward to Battleship and hope he'll stay in Chungmuro and do more quality films.

Descendants' ratings mean that K Drama peeps will finally see the benefits of having a pre-produced show instead of a half baked rushed one. I commend KBS for taking the risk and hope that they would finally stop with the live production. You can see the difference between the two forms in Cheese. It was sooooo good and then the drama happened. Sad life.

I doubt people are watching DoTS because it benefitted from pre-production. It's currently up to eps 4 so it's hard to tell if it's half baked or rushed yet.

"Road No# 1" was pre-produced with a lot of hype. The live shot "Comrades" with no hype beat it in ratings and quality. It became the best war drama to be seen on tv.

There are many different things that contribute to the ratings. Timing, writing/story, actors/acting, quality etc etc.

I'm in support of pre-produced dramas for the benefit of the cast, crews and the drama as whole too but people will watch what they want to watch pre-produced or not.

Since NH is aired at late night, the report about the rating comes a little bit late. The drama is flop with the latest rating for Ep.12 is 0.792 % ( their lowest rating so far ). Seems OCN have already shifted their supports to the new drama, Vampire Detective. It gets big promotions recently.

The lead actor will release new movie with Yoon eun hye this Thursday but no hype at all even there's not VIP Movie Premiere until now..

I was such a sobbing mess that I had to pause while watching episode 13 as I was having difficulty breathing, lol! The writing, directing and acting in this show is assured and solid that I don't really care how it ends. I'm confident it would be thematically satisfying. It deserves all the praises!!!

Song Jong Ki and Song Hye Gyo were very pretty but I have to turn my brain off to watch DOTS. The rating were no joke, this is why this script writer never learn, she keep making the same cliche plot and the audience will eat it up.

Not sure why DOTS gets such high ratings - perhaps because it is different from all the chaebol/candy girl common themes.

I may sound bitter, but i wonder if there are no SJK and SHK in it, the rating will be this high. To be honest, SJK alone could bring high rating.

I am not a fan of this writer, but her drama always a hit because of the casts. I was expecting that DOTS could at least bring something different, and still wishing so.

<I may sound bitter, but i wonder if there are no SJK and SHK in it, the rating will be this high.

You'd just have other popular actors with eye-candy factor in SJK and SHK's place, so the rating would likely be similar.

What you wouldn't get is someone like Kim Ji-won or Im Joo-Eun as the main leads, because they don't have a fanbase big enough to pull in those numbers. I'm trying to think of a guy equivalent... maybe Kang Ha-neul? He's done a supporting role in a KES drama too, but probably wouldn't be deemed "big enough" (not yet) for the kind of OTP casting you see for KES dramas.

Sometimes I also feel that everyone's just like "We'll watch a KES drama because it's supposed to be the one drama with the super-high ratings" – you know, like to contribute to the phenomenon.

Lol. Agreed. They could pass for the same age! And they are both so pretty to look at. I've read some negative comments about the drama, which I think is fantastic, btw, and I can't help wondering that if this wasn't a KES drama, would it really be criticized so much? It is certainly better than any of its competitors running at the same time slot. A lot of money was poured into its production and it certainly shows the difference in its quality.

0

@lemondoodle age diff has nothing to do with chemistry. I guess I don't ship song-song because skh is beautiful but she lacks in charm. Seen all her dramas and has always been the case. U can be drop dead gorgeous but if there is no charm, no facial expressions then there is no chemistry

0

I don't think I'm reaching by saying that Signal is now my favourite Korean drama (and trust me, I've watched alot). Everything about it just falls together so perfectly. I'll be sad to see it end next week but I'm dying to know what happens at the same time.

As for DotS I can admit that it has a crack factor to it. But that music score. Someone has to fire whoever is in charge of this OST. I read the first two recaps before trying to watch it myself and found myself bursting out laughing every time the love track blasted it's way onto a scene. Unfortunately it was a few times too many per episode.

Ahh, yes both are my current favorite dramas.

I can't agree with you enough about DofS OST. It's on FIRE! True that the themed love song's being oversaturated however it grows on you if you're immersed in the music and style. I can't get enough of the three singles released so far, besides a doting note on my top fave Faded (Restrung) by Alan Walker.

These days I have to give tremendous credit to the sound crew behind these Kdramas, lately they've been killin' it with amazing OST selections; that's how I suckered into finishing CIAT for its Indie's driven soundtrack. (=

Signal is brilliant in every way - direction, script, performances, pacing, cinematography, soundtrack. It is not afraid to ask the hard questions, not is it afraid to dedicate an episode to give grief its proper place... allowing the viewers to walk, if only a while, in the shoes of those who live with the devastation of loss. Am so not ready to say goodbye to this incredible universe, and all the characters that have, in less than two months, become so close to my heart.

Although they use the same case as in MoM, that case was only for 2-3 episodes, and then they moved on to other cases (adapted also from other real life cases). The show is more about the radio transmission between two different timelines, so more about time distortion elements x detective show.

SJK just looks too boyish for SHK and it's not so much to do with their narrow age gap. totally agree that OMHA, CBA and DotS are equally enjoyable in their own right and being of different genres, it's tough to rank and rate them fairly, really. Like Heads2one says, it's down to which looks the glossiest and yes! please change the musical director - it's turning into some 1970s Hollywood "Gone with the Wind" war time romance. the deafening musical score spoils all the grand moments i.e. kissing and skinship. This is Korea, not Hollywood, music director-nim! We burst out laughing at the cliché music when we should be squeueing over SJK's smooches!!! I love the cheesey lines tho' becoz that is exactly how army guys behave! lol!

I love second couple more. But to be honest the pairing that will actually will be good to look at

1) Song Jong Ki & Kim Ji Won

2) Jin Gu & Song Hye Kyo.

SHK definitely does not look old, just SJk looks too boyish.

yup... SHK never looks old, timeless beauty...

It's just that SJK needs to look more manly to match her looks.....

Or they should've cast a more mature guy for SHK... I would even for 2nd female lead to SJK, to match his baby face... hahaha..

actually about the only thing I enjoy in Dots are captain's cheesey jokes ! said with a straight face, no less. I must say that Song Joonki can flirt with his hands tied behind his back and his head covered with a balaclava coz all he needs are his eyes and voice :P

OMHE is quirky, lovable and sweet and it offers so much insights into relationships - plus it probably has the whole range of K drama boyfriends and husbands. Charming con man (Dong Mi's Oven seller lover), long suffering husband (Da jeong's hubs), hot egotistical ex-husband (Han Mi Mo), playboy turned contrite hubs (Ae Ran's match), Mr Perfect where- have- you- been- oh- you- were- waiting- for- me for 25 years .... (Soo Hyuk with apron , only an apron lols), cold hearted Mr Perfect (Hae Joon in doctor's scrubs) etc. and the female characters are well portrayed.

Come Back Ajushhi - it's a madcap adventure filled with chaebol ambitions, illegitimate kids, corporate sheninagans, body possession, gangland antics, love triangles, heavenly intervention (literally) - it's everything that OMHE is and even the rousing dramatic score in Dots (witness the scene where Maya borrows from Marvel Comics' Storm to blow the plane off course and you hear Mozart ....).

Oh my , thank goodness for the good old Ahjusshi. You must be the only sane drama in k dramaland - becoz sometimes, the ratings just dun justify the hype!

Sooooo many people here are talking about Signal. Maybe I need to watch it too?

I watched CITT but then I dropped it after episode five. I turned to Madame Antoine, but it's just a complete failure in every aspects of it. Then I started watching DOTS and fell in love with SJK's gaze, but I actually do agree with some of the comments here that he looks too boyish for SHK with her melancholic looks. After that, I gave a try to Come Back Ahjussi because it's my favorite genre, romantic comedy, but I only love watching Kim Soo-Ro and Oh Yeon-Seo. Finally, I come to Marriage Contract and I have a high expectation on it. Please, don't disappoint me.

SIGNAL has everything you hoped a drama could have. Great directing, writing, acting and OSTs. It captures you in its entirety. The best of the best in the history of kdramas and even puts some movies (yes, movies) into shame.Watch it and surely, you'll say that all of those hours are 100% worth it.

Five kids continued to be really good this weekend. Sung Hoon made his appearance finally and it was pretty hilarious because I think I can see how the lovelines are going to be set up with the various siblings of the main couple and wow, daebak.

What I'm most enjoying is that the main couple seem like completely normal, well-adjusted people. Like, it's such a refreshing change from some of the over-wraught drama in shorter series.

Yes I am so happy to see its ratings are so good! Good for them. It's a really nice show though i think the mother in law should tone down her hysterics a bit but there's still a lot of heart in the show.

Aaaaaand Yes! Signal has done it again! Happy dance in my life today. :) :) :)

I do have a question though: did anyone watch the first episodes of Marriage Contract? To my understanding it's not one of the long running ones, but the ratings were still really high... help, please.

FIVE KIDS is worth watching. I am surprised the ratings are so high compared to the competition this week. I do love it! Characters are well developed and it is only episode 6! They are also easy to like or easy to hate, like the useless father and his trampy wife/former best friend of his 1st wife. The writer gives enough details on each character to see good and bad points. All the age groups are represented. The lead female character IS NOT and idiot! I repeat, not an idiot! The drama is worth watching just for that.

Wow such different tastes between international viewers and korean viewers, while DOTS is being panned here for being too pretty korean viewers are going crazy over it, SJK is capturing every body's heart there and I don't think it's just because he's too pretty to look at, if I remember correctly korean netizen themselves were saying SJK doesn't fit the army role and it's going to be a flop but now they are all praising him, anyway the reasons for them loving the drama mostly seem to be SJK's acting, they're saying he makes cringey lines sound romantic which I have to admit, another reason being there is no definite love triangle, I hope the drama keeps doing well and breaks records in Korea.
