Drama viewership ratings for the week of Mar. 14-20, 2016

Surprise surprise: Descended From the Sun continues to exceed expectations in terms of numbers, and though we didn’t see any huge jumps this week, it stayed at the 28% mark for both episodes. No small feat, to be sure—and there’s little doubt it’ll reach 30% soon enough.

Taking the place of Moorim School this week was four-episode miniseries Babysitter, helmed by none other than PD Kim Yong-soo, who I have a very love/hate relationship with. (I have died over some of his work, and his cinematography is unparalleled—but he’s made some pretty bad choices lately. When will we get another White Christmas, I ask?) It’s pulling in okay numbers after such a poor lead-in, at least making it past the dreaded 3% mark that somehow seemed to elude poor Moorim School most times.

Otherwise, we had Goodbye Mr. Black start on MBC, which pulled in decent-to-low numbers. I don’t think that should be an indicator of quality though—both it and Ajusshi are up against reeeally tough competition in Descended. Good luck to them, it’ll be some tough going.

I hope they go up too, but unlikely competing with DOTS, which I think is way overhyped. GMB is just as good, imo. Too bad ratings can't take into consideration all sources of viewing.

Goodbye Mr. Black is still a bit rough around the edges, I guess when that smooths out and the story kicks in there's real potential for a ratings jump but to what extent is debatable. I find DOTS cheesy but alright and sometimes a bit too cheesy for my taste. The monster ratings are a bit unbelievable because I've seen better stuff with really low ratings on Korean dramas the past couple of years. Then again this may pave way for more pre-produced dramas so that's not a bad thing.

Also in before anyone criticises DOTS to praise other two dramas. Yes its quite sad that those two dramas will get low rating. But DOTS isnt to blame. Cant help that korean household loves DOTS more. So lets be less harsh on dots. I am feeling quite sad at some harsh comments towards dots these days.

agree, I love them both. They can act, they can even act better than dots in their other drama. I just can't for the love of me, enjoy dots. Though I love both of the main leads. I guess it is a matter of taste.

I enjoy Marriage Contract now, and back at watching some older dramas that I did not have the chance to watch before.

0

It is a price to pay if you are being on the top. I think if the comment like ' I prefer this and that ' or 'I don't know why this drama gets high rating' bla bla cannot be considered as harsh. Everyone entitled to their own opinion.

I may not be watching DotS but I'm rooting for the ratings to break 30%. It has been a while since a drama brought so many television viewers together like the old days.

Did you read X's metacap on DotS? I love all the behind the scene infos in relation to the industry. No one in the k-drama world talks about that kind of interesting stuff.

I had no idea that DotS was on SBS's line up but they decided to invest on Six Flying Dragons instead. I wonder what they are thinking now as far as revenue both inside and outside of Korea.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Yep I did :D Now I want metacaps of every drama ever lol. He makes me want to believe that I can be an adult and enjoy kdramas all at the same time.

I didn't know that either. 6FD has solid ratings but nowhere near DotS. I really don't have a good grasp of how money works in dramaland, partly because things don't always make sense, but SBS made a mistake in not taking the risk imo. If the industry does start changing the way it does business because of this, they might find themselves falling behind.

0

Of course in hindsight SBS should have gone for the huge money spinner DOTS, but imo, they did right in investing in SFD too ❤

It's too bad SBS doesn't have enough money to take up both projects...

0

May I know the website of the metacap? It sounds very interesting.

0

@Sun
http://www.dramatic-eye.com/k-drama/2016-dramas/descendants-of-the-sun/metacap-1/

@lc
I think SBS went with SFD because it was safer. SFD had a huge budget too. Unlike MBC and KBS, SBS does not have their own sageuk sets and sageuks are very expensive to make.

@juniper
I've always like to know what goes down behind the dramas/movies like production, revenue (budget and profit), marketing etc Things viewers don't usually care about and that's one of the reason why I love DE.

I must admit to supporting pre-production for the casts and crews' sake. I hardly look at other benefits because this is not the first pre-produce drama ever but it's the first one with a rating hit.
Thanks for X's metacap I get to see the other benefits too.

0

Hmm I think SFD, like most sageuks, are harder to export overseas. The public channel in my country (Singapore) is always airing Korean dramas, but they hardly buy sageuks. From what I remember, the last sageuk they aired was Empress Ki, and before that it was Dong Yi. Both happen to be romance-heavy, because most people don't know Korean history and wouldn't be able to understand the political historical dramas.

But of course, I love SFD and I'm glad SBS chose to do it. It's the first 50-episode sageuk that I watched and every single minute has been awesome.

0

@Kaylie
I think it depends on the type of sageuks. Some are popular overseas and in Korea and some are popular in Korea but not in the overseas market.

Dong Yi, Empress Ki, Jumong, Dae Jang Geum etc are fusion sageuks with very little to do with the actual history. They are more popular than the authentic sageuks outside of Korea.

Dae Jang Geum (Jewel in the Palace) is responsible for spreading the "Hallyu Wave" like wildfire overseas (91 countries). My whole family were watching it and none of us knew anything about Korean history but we all loved it.
Once I got into the history, authentic sageuks became my favorite. (The less popular type of sageuks to be exported into foreign markets).

The fusions sageuks based on well known historical figures and the trendy fusion fantasy sageuks like Moon/Sun, Arang etc are the type of sageuks that sells in the overseas market.

My guess is that SFD and Lee Young Ae's Saimdang, the Herstory will be the 2 big fusion sageuks this year that would fare well in the overseas market.
I think Lee Jun-ki's fantasy remake Scarlet Heart: Ryeo has potential to be sold overseas for as high as Arang.

0

DOTS started first so had a head start, and also it's being super hyped. It is a good show, and I love both Song Joong ki and Lee Jin Wook, so thankfully I can watch both.

Dolce, I feel the same way! I'm only thru with the 4th episode though, since I have to wait for subtitles. But episode 4 might have had a really bad foreshadowing, when he said he realized soldiers who die in a foreign country and it's their burial place, and their uniform is their shroud. I thought, uh, oh, if that's foreshadowing his death at the end, I'm not sure I want to watch anyway.

Healer only garnered a fervent fanbase online (mainly with international audiences), and that too only on some sites, Dramabeans being one of them, but it was severely overlooked, if not underestimated by Korean audiences. The show didn't receive enough hype in my opinion, at least where national ratings are concerned.

This is already expected, with the preproduce of DOT's, of course, the studies, promotions, etc were also studied.... It is expected to have high ratings, the writer/producer made sure all of it, cause they have to bring back the profit or atleast double it!... Otherwise, it will be the end of her career if she don't make it a boost..... but story wise??---just forget it!!.. Just enjoy the travel show called DOTS!!

I'm really surprised but Marriage Contract is actually getting better each episode. Ep 1 and 2 was just meh but okay enough for me but i found myself from being a casual watcher to quite an ardent one.

It's just a nice and pleasant watch.

And that kid is too darn cute. I can't help but want to squish her cheek. The mother-daughter thing is working and even the hateful ahjusshi and the resentful little girl is shaping up to quite a good family picture.

I can only hope for a real happy ending because everyone has some kind of things going on in real life for the choices they have made.

PS: I'm watching it with my mom and she requests to watch it without subtitle because she dreaded the thought of missing ep 6 due to some overseas business. LOL

In the past we could usually anticipate which shows they'd recap. Now it's a bit harder. In general, there is a lot more effort being dedicated to news posts and less to recaps, compared to recent years.

This site started as a personal blog then got big enough to turn into a legitimate commercial enterprise. Every business needs to adapt to shifting market conditions and maximize its return to its owners. Recently this site has begun to enhance its ad-based revenue streams. And it seems that a tactical part of that has been to capture fandom traffic. This is based on an observation that the comment section is trending toward an increasingly youthful perspective and tone.

Before anyone becomes defensive about these observations, please know that what I'm saying is definitely not a criticism. Though I personally do miss the tone of the past recaps and community of commenters; so far it seems they've made very good strategic business moves and the site has captured a broader audience. Which can only help spread the love of Kdramas.

0

If you were around when JB started this site we were lucky to get 1 recap and we were fine with it.

What's with all this expectation? They have done a lot more recaps than they ever did before.

I agree, if you take a look back at the first few years of this site, the news/non-recap to recap ratio of posts was a lot more heavily weighed towards non-recaps! Until guest recappers and girlfriday came into play, JB was only recapping 1-2 shows at a time.

My only complaint with the current state of the site is THE ADS. I don't want to block DB's ads because I want to support this site, but man... these recent ads are too much!!!

0

Well it made sense because it was only JB doing most of the recaps and I remembered she would stop recapping shows she would lose interest in which is 100% understandable since it was more a personal, smaller blog back then.

I don't see anything wrong with hoping for shows you like to get recapped. It's not like people are demanding it.

It is still slowly gaining new viewers. Goodluck to all 3 dramas! It's great that they have different themes. Viewers can opt to watch some or all of them. LOL.. Woah.. don't get worked up over something simple.
Simply these Wed-Thu dramas are the best in a long time. KBS, SBS and MBC have quality dramas that more or less loved by viewers.
Personally out of the 3, I love Come Back Ahjussi the most. It's funny and heartfelt at the same time. While DOTS and GMB seems to be action packed+melodrama. For us viewers, to say which drama is the best is really subjective and rating doesn't always equate quality. Yes DOTS wins and it has beautiful cinematography and more complex story due to pre-production. But CBA and GMB are actually not that bad and don't deserve low ratings IMO. Frankly both shows could do better if on different timeslot, with different competitors.

Same cases: You From Another Star, Miss Korea, Pretty Man (YFAS won)
Empress Ki, MYIHD, Suspicious Housekeeper (EK won)

Sadly though, and I say this because I've seen it not only on this site but on other sites as well, it's usually people who are a fan of the other dramas that often bring up DotS in their statements. Saying X show is way better than DotS. Like there needs to be some justification as to why they are watching a lower rated drama. When really, there is no right or wrong in drama watching. Yes, a highly rated drama doesn't mean it has better quality than others but in the same vein, a lower rated drama doesn't mean it also way better but just underrated. Preference is key.

This. Agree! We like what we like and I don't think you can even force it. We gravitate to certain shows for different reasons. What's the use of watching a highly rated drama if you're not entertained or hooked (and vice versa). Forcing your opinions on others is useless as well.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Agree with what you said. I understand that everyone is entitled to their opinion and to express their love for whatever drama it is they're watching. But it's an open forum (and unless you DO want to get involve in a keyboard fight of who's right and who's wrong) so why not just focus on THE show that we love so much. There's no need to add 'unlike (insert drama name)' in our comment.

If it's to show how two dramas that are alike and yet one executed it better than the other (case in point KMHM & Hyde and Jekyll), then go ahead. The 3 dramas airing right now are TOTALLY different and it so happened that one got better ratings than the other for God knows whatever reason.

I too feel that one show was a cut above the others but I know I will hurt the fans' feelings for making comparisons. Again, I am aware that everyone is free to speak their mind but we have no rights to hurt other people's feelings. We're not gaining anything out of this fight but we would certainly lose respect.

Let's keep DB a sane place for discussion why don't we?

Thank you.

As far as the acting, screenplay and cinematography goes, I'll say Come Back Mister is a way better drama than DOTS. People will like what they like, and ratings will rise for a popular drama. What's popular isn't always considered the greatest quality across all levels. I'm just saying...Come Back Mister is really, really underrated, maybe for being a 'comedy' 'romance'. And of course, having a lack of that magic ingredient, Song Joong Ki. Since I wasn't really a massive fan, I can take it or leave it with DOTS...but dramas like Come Back Ahjusshi and Marriage Contract are a must-watch for me each week. A close runner-up is Mr. Black.

Same. But i think it goes out of our way a bit to compare Comeback Mister with DOTS. It's a different genre drama alltogether.

Well I say, a drama is a drama. Not fair that some consider comedy dramas to be 'less' than the heavier dramas with the action and suspense etc. Let's consider effort above all things. DOTS is flawless, but so is CBM in its own special way. I know which one I'm rooting for to keep making me smile.

I'm sorry, I just had to comment on your "DOTS is flawless" statement. If that were the case, there wouldn't be people who find it utterly un-watchable despite all the "glittery goodness" the show promises.

Perhaps, you were speaking of a fan's sentiments? As in, a DOTS fan can not see any flaws with the show and think the show is flawless?

Anyways, I absolutely disagree with your statement if you were talking from a more objective perspective. And this is coming from a Song Joong Ki fan and someone who's like Song Hye Kyo since she was 18 and starred in Autumn in My Heart.

I say DOTS is flawless, because it's one of those dramas that 'does everything right'. Everything has been set up to appeal to the majority: slick delivery, male lead with a scorching popularity, and just overall appeal in its storyline. But flawless doesn't guarantee it will 'engage' everyone. Some, like me will be left a little cold.

CBM has nothing wrong with it, which is why it's also flawless. I mean everyone is killing it in this show (my fave being Oh Yeon-So who's freaking awesome right now). I guess different dramas give different reactions to its chemical composition. I try to be fair to all dramas, especially if I see commendable effort has been put in by all involved.

I love CBM too! Oh Yeon Soo really killing it and the comedy is spot on. It aired at the same time with DOTS and I ended up watching CBM then read DOTS recaps in here. It was THAT good for me (seriously IMVHO) ???

wow for DoTS, still enjoying it so much
I think the rating is high because there's no bad guy that happen to be bad guy for no reason just to fit the bad guy plot.
There's the bad daddy but he isn't really a threat,
there's that arm dealer that being bad guy because he chooses to do bad deed,
the drama has humanity and feeling plus good execution, I feel like it's one drama that the delivery make it stand out,

CBA is quite messy in the plot, rain's arc is completely disjointed and unsympathetic. It can turn people off.
The comedy is still good but there's no actual things happen beside OYS character life, I don't even knew why they had to come back to life cause the truth is, it feels like the other people on their life have it their way, they do what they do best.

I can watch this for the laugh but I don't really care about the character, I'll watch it when it aired but I don't really looked forward. Part of it because we as viewer already knew what actually happen and I don't think uncover it will help much.
It's good, it just not that memorable other than the comedic moment and the way they tells the plot is way complicated. I can't blame people for not tune in.

I quite agree about Rain and Lee Min-jung's story. I really enjoy Oh Yeon-seo though, I'm discovering her for the first time. She's amazing. Her chemistry with Honey Lee is no joke. I love their story and though I know she can't stay, I'm kinda friendshipping her with Song Yi-yeon, they are so adorable. I can't seem to get into the murder/suicide story but I love the hilarity and the heart of Oh Yeon-seo's character's arc.

I would love to spend the whole show with OYS arc, we can keep rain as the real director son that happen to be some kind of shaman descendant.
He can be goofy, his brother is a very interesting character too, just tye suicide story feel unneeded.

I really didn't connect with CBA. I didn't find it that interesting or funny either.

Just goes to show that people do have different preferences and opinions. There's no need to belittle DotS because of its high ratings and no need to underrate CAB either. We need to respect each other more.

Just want to said what I feel about cba since I said this in another thread and got quite unpleasant replies.
Underrated doesn't always make it good, there must be a reason when people don't tune in
I think the rating is too low, it make it looks reaaaally bad in comparison to other drama

I think DOTS and Comeback Ahjusshi fans might end up pulling each other hairs at this point.

I saw some at twitter and it wasn't nice. It was good when it's all healthy competition and stuff.

I watch both but i'm more of a casual watcher. I hope that they will spazz on how good their fav drama instead of mulling over competitors drama.

too many backstory between the lead in wed/thurs
rain x song hye kyo
lee byung hyun (lee min jung's husband) x song hye kyo
and Mon chae won x song jong ki also still a thing
and they all have fan bases, quite unfortunate,

Looking at comments, I'd led to think Come Back Ahjussi fans are sore losers and Dots fans are kindergarteners.

To CBA fans, forget about ratings. Numbers don't lie so it's not use arguing with Dots fans. Just know that rating does not equate to better quality. Enjoying a lower rated drama does not mean you have poorer taste.

To Dots fans, you already have the numbers on your side and probably, it will go down in kdrama history as the drama which gets the viewers back if it exceeds 30%. Rubbing it in the face or gloating is not gracious. Expecting everyone to like what you like is insane. Keep it up and Dots fans may go down in history as the most annoying next to some fan bases which shall not be named.

Lol! Tho I think it's okay to be happy with the ratings of your fave dramas in this thread as it is, well, about weekly drama viewership ratings. However, I agree with you in regards to being mindful of what we post here. We should all respect each other's preferences.

In this thread, there was only one person who was gloating about DotS being better than the ''stupid'' comedy that is CBA though? That person does not represent all DotS fans, so you could refrain from labelling them as having the potential to be the most annoying fans.

Not sure why you felt the need to make a comparison with Healer, a year-old drama, as opposed to any of the more recent popular dramas.

Personally, I thought that Remember was disappointing because it could've been great-- it had some truly phenomenal acting (though the youngins' paled in comparison), and one of the best villains ever, but the writing was only mediocre.

Whether DotS or CBA is better it's really up to one's preference. I've decided to drop DotS after epi 6 because the story doesn't interest me after the earthquake

CBA actually carry-over the humourous tone of One More Happy Ending + Oh Yeon Seo is the reason why I want to keep watching this drama. She's so brilliant in her character I find myself fawning over her as much as Gi Tak fawns over Yi Yeon lol

I'm also watching 5 children, and it has similar humour as CBA. Typical kbs weekend family drama but it made me laugh every episode so I'm not surprised at the current viewer rating.

I have literally no idea what's going on and no idea why I am still watching it when I've dropped three dramas for every one I've watched all the way through in the past little while. It sort of has that retro 70s vibe to it but what the heck is it about? Anyone???

Lee Soo-hyuk is the best thing about NH and probably the only reason I'm still watching. He's playing an ordinary, naive, directionless young man who thinks he might want to be a policeman or a secret agent or something. He seems to be easily manipulated but he's also not stupid. I haven't watched anything he's been in before except White Christmas where all he had to do was look moody, broody and suicidal but he's a good actor.

Watching live is great but i guess the situation is changing with many people choose to watch dramas online. Cmiiw but korean people do that too right?

But I'm glad the shows I'm following are doing great in ratings. There's been quite a few great shows in 2016 already!! If this is how the whole year is gonna be, I'm stoked for more!
GO DOTS, MC, MC2, and SFD!!

Lol it looks like DOTS high viewer ratings are making viewers of other dramas quite jealous and cranky, it's becoming like a trend to put down DOTS to big up any dramas competing with them, and to the people who are complaining about DOTS users being annoying, I only see like 3 or 4 comments from DOTS fans that were immature, all the other ones are just spacing on the drama without putting other dramas down, whereas the fans of GMB and CBA are all in one or other way obsessed with DOTS ratings, all their comments mention how DOTS is shitty and all that, and if a DOTS fan say the same thing they are bombarded with replies as to why it's not true, at least korean netizen are praising both dramas without putting other down, why can't I fans do the same?

Five kids really deserves that 25% rating. It's a really nice show, it's warm and friendly with some slapstick comedy and some meddling older parents. It's basically like watching four different K dramas at once just split up over the multiple storylines.

DOTS is sooooo overrated though.

While I enjoyed the first few episodes but since epsiode 7 onwards, I found myself fast forwrding this drama, I found it slow and cliche! I am getting bored with this drama!

Eventhough I love both Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Gyo, I don't think I can continue watching this drama without fast forwarding it!

Totally agree with that SJK said about the negative comments:

“The drama is public art, and I think if everybody loves it, that drama becomes something less charming,” Song said. “While I welcome criticism, I would like to tell those giving negative reviews to watch the drama until the end so that they can see the deeper meaning the drama is trying to show.”

Yeah, but you realise you can also translate that as "Watch till the end so that we get super-high ratings even if you hate the drama".

If he were talking about a film, I'd agree, but 16 hours is a lot to invest to "watch until the end". Six episodes max is enough to see whether you'll enjoy a drama or not.

I think i have the right of saying my own opinion, ever since my love from another star ended 2years ago, there hasn't been a drama that has got me hooked the way remember does.. Healer was a great drama and also boring at the same time, it's true that the chemistry between the leads is too cool, and the drama has some really great and funny scenes but it looses its storyline when it got to the middle, that drama has nothing over remember, remember is more realistic and the acting from the characters were strong except for the villain who i could not seem to relate to, like i dind'nt know what's great about him, he was funny, yes, but not that great when it comes to real acting, most of knetizens that are discussing about him only talks about how funny he was, yoo seung ho and park sung woong were the real men in that drama...

Required fields are marked *

No one is getting on you for your opinion. People are just confused why you are bringing up 2 completely unrelated things to the initial post. Remember has nothing to do with the above post since it's already finished airing, and Healer even less so as it was aired a year ago and also has nothing to do with Remember. They aren't even really the same genre to each other.

I am happy you really liked Remember, I'm actually watching it with my family and only have 4 episodes left. I agree it's a great show but it's getting frustrating and has starting just recycling the story. Good guys find evidence or something they can use to bring down the bag guy, just for bad guys to buy people off to make that evidence useless, over and over again. It's become a joke in my family of 'Let's see who will be paid off this time'.

I personally absolutely loved Healer and me and my family agree it's our favorite drama. But that's just my opinion.

But my question is, why the sudden need to bring up a comparison between Healer and Remember on a post that has absolutely nothing to do with either of these shows?
