Oh Snap! Lee Hyun-woo sulks in expensive suits

To be fair, I’d be sulking too if I were a talented actor stuck in a show hardly anyone is watching. Lee Hyun-woo has had a bad run of it lately when it comes to dramas, especially youth dramas in particular, with Moorim School continuing an unfortunate trend started by the much beleaguered To The Beautiful You in back in 2012.

Maybe it’ll just take some growing up from this baby-faced beauty before he’s cast in more adult-oriented shows, but for now, we can enjoy him looking adorably pitiful and/or slightly uncomfortable for this month’s photo spread in Esquire magazine.

Of his role in Moorim School, the bright-eyed young star claimed to be nothing like the cold character he portrays on screen, adding, “It’s true that I have a bright and optimistic side of me. I fool around a lot on set, and am even more playful when I’m with my friends. But I’m not always like that. I have lots of worries, and I listen to more depressing music than happy music.”

He is a good actor but Seo Ye Ji( his love interest) was terrible in this drama. Her act was either a bit over comedic or wooden. I felt so sorry for him. Her acting was so bad that even Hong Bin( VIXX) was better than she. There are a couple of young actresses that I am puzzled to see why they get leading roles( oh, though they are pretty) and she is one of them.

Then don't go there. Disgusting and judgmental, especially when you haven't seen her in anything. A lot of producers don't even care about the acting as much as a pretty face, certain personality or just some kind of connection. Nothing new, it's been happening forever and everywhere. Just stop accusing every actress you don't like of having a "sponsor".

Although I like him, his niche is now gone to Park Bo Gum. If there was a role that suited him, the producers will probably try to get PBG first, and then if he rejects, the offer might go to Hyun Woo.

I just hope that he chooses his next project carefully. Time and tide waits for no man. Just because he is talented doesn't mean viewers will excuse him forever.

Maybe he should try doing a villain to show off his acting chops (and further distance himself from PBG's image)? Like Nam Goong Min did in his most recent dramas.

I, for one, would be very interested in the the character of a pretty boy turned evil!!

The problem is that they're being compared when each has their own style and personality. Bo Gum is more shy and reserved while Hyun Woo is more playful and bright. It's also not that one is better than another, but that they're not suited to the same parts but they're being compared anyways because of their looks.

It's got to suck! His contemporary, Yoo Seung ho was getting adult roles in dramas way before he entered the army, and Lee Hyun woo is still stuck in teen roles of idol dramas, no less! He is wasted on his agency. And the competition is even stiffer nowadays with hot new actors like Park Bo Gum and Ji Soo now on the scene. Well I wish him all the luck in the world and hope that his time to shine will come. He's a good actor, though it was hard to tell watching the mess that was Moorim school.

Different audiences and expectations, eh? I agree with you about Lee Hyun woo's movies. I have watched a few of them, and he was brilliant in them. However, he wasn't lead actor in those movies and had more popular and established actors carrying the movie in the ones I watched. I wonder how he fared if he were the one to headline the movie?

I also think Yoo Seung ho is really popular and beloved among the ahjumma crowd. That might be a reason for his high kdrama ratings. I think the formula of Lee Hyun woo's movies could also translate well to drama, if he acted in adult roles with a solid, well established cast (he was brilliant in Scholar who Walks by Night, and I wanted to see more of him in that drama) and stayed far away from idol dramas where he has to carry everyone else.

Oh yeah is a solid actor. If only moorim school made the story faster and bad ass - the moorim school is a good concept - the writer does not know what to do with the concept of the story. They got a good start

1-4 - building up the past connecting to present but they got overwhelmed

If only the writer
1. Connected properly the story it was really good. People just watching the show because they want to know what happened to shi woo and seon doek.

2. If only there's more martial arts and more exposure to Shi Woo and Hoang Ah's dad, and Seon Deok dad's between the moorim bad people together with dean - it was one hell of a story

3. If only they use the side casts properly - its bad ass fighting scenes.

4. The kissing scenes are unapproriate to include. I'm okay with the kissing scenes and sweet time of SD and SW but so senseless to prolong such sweet-dialogue talks

5. If only they complete the story - idol-music - found his past - met his dad, seon dok became his security, but he also is good in martial arts, fights underworld with dad and sister....

Oh too many... i just find that moorim is really good concept they wasted it. Huhu...

But I guess I have to wait for a full Equator Man 1-2 for LHW where he was good in that first two episode - solid acting. I hope he can become like Yoo SH - progressing, talented and versatille.

LHW so good being cocky, bad ass in fighting, but loving, and sweet

i agree, i really liked the concept of moorim school and fantasy martial arts. however it just wasn't well executed enough, and the actors, though i could appreciate their individual charms by the end, were overall pretty green. i skimmed most of the episodes and missed a few plot points, but i got the general gist. i tuned in almost every week to just lament over what it might have been. it was bad in a lot of ways, but there was still something about it.

the actors, the directing were all lacking, but not lacking enough that i couldn't see the potential promise in it. it's just unfortunate really. i guess i was hoping for another dream high scenario.

Second your thoughts too. But I guess if we feel this way the writer felt it too - its learning time. Now as it concluded I know I am seeing a future great for Lee Hyun Woo - He can do it.

As for Mrs Dean and Mr Wang Chia few moments of sweetness they captured my heart.

LHW and SYJ they captured me from the very first - both on their separate movies and shows they were both good.

I love Lee Hyun-woo and I want so much of him in dramas, but I honestly believe Chungmuro is the better place for him to be at. KeyEast has done really well in picking good and highly successful movies for him where he's able to portray complicated characters and work with sunbaes. In dramas though, he's stuck baby sitting idol actors who can't act to save their lives. First it was Minho and Sulli, now the beyond-terrible Hongbin. He's so much more talented and capable than that, so I hope KeyEast can start making better decisions for him. He deserves better than garbage like Moorim and I deserve better as his fan.

Required fields are marked *

I think calling Hong Bin "beyond-terrible" is a little harsh. It's only his third drama and maybe his first leading role. Many idols don't start off that great, but they improve. Kim Hyun-Joong was way better in Age of Feeling than he was in Boys over Flowers and Hong Bin was a lot better at the end of Moorim than he was at the beginning. He obviously wasn't as good as Hyun Woo who started off as an actor (I think) but he was so much better than Seo Ye Ji who's been in more dramas than him and has done a better job in those. I think it's a little unfair to judge Hong Bin based on such a small pool of experience.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm judging Hongbin as an actor, not based on his experience which I frankly think is irrelevant. If you're going to act, idol or not, do it right, or don't do it at all. Just because this is his first acting experience as a part of the lead cast, it doesn't mean I'd be giving him leeway on his beyond terrible acting. Because while he's 'learning' to act, some good rookie out there is losing a chance to do the job right and not have to make it look like he's labouring through a very simple character.

There are idol actors who get it right the first time like Jung Eun-ji or Yoon Do-joon. While there are tons of 'real' actors who get it wrong the first time like Jin Se-yeon or Lee Yeon-hee or Go Seung-hee. I'd judge them equally and fairly because no matter what their experience is, they are hired and paid to do something on screen. If they can't do it, it's only right for them to accept criticism and work on improving - in school rather than taking up roles where they can't deliver.

Very well said.. Completely agree with your points. When an actor has taken upon a role they should do justice to it. No matter how good the concept or plot is if the actors dont play it well you just can't get invested in the story.

I agree, he is a good actor, and honestly, "Moorim School" was pretty decent - I mean, so many Kdramas are just mediocre and worse, for example, "Heirs" was wildly popular and dumber than dirt, you know? Whether DramaBeans likes or doesn't like a drama is just one opinion. "Monstar" was another one that was so popular here and I thought it was just so idiotic. To each his own.

I think a report or documentary or something came out about this recently. And I just read where a Cube Entertainment idol (not Hyuna) was basically outed as f**** to pay off debts. It seems that's their euphemism for pimping and pandering.

I honestly prefer the more crass American, "Whose d*** you suck?" to this sanitized "sponsorship" mess. It takes nerve to suggest that someone f**** their way into a position. It's easy to say "sponsor."

Lee Hyun-Woo REALLY seems to shine in more angsty roles. He is so adorable in his cute, friendly and funny roles, but he absolutely blows me away whenever he gets a nice, juicy role in a WELL. WRITTEN. AND. WELL. DIRECTED (looking at Korea) drama or movie. *Ah. HEM.*

Clearly in the minority here in thoroughly enjoying Moorim School. I found it good in the way that a simple but hearty meal is...very satisfying. A pity more viewers couldn't get into it. Liked Lee Hyun Woo, loved his bromance (which was so bristling with chemistry and pathos it really should have been straight up romance) with Hongbin, foot acting and all. And Hongbin actually improved *very* noticeably by the final episode. Seo Ye Ji and Jung Yoo Jin were good too -- and refreshing characters as women who consistently kicked ass, and had love interests who respected them for that and weren't threatened by it (even when said love interests were the ones having their asses handed to them by the female leads). I think it was a sweet little story that was overly harshly criticized honestly.

I enjoyed Moorim right up to the end, but some of that got taken away because they spent so much time having Chi Ang vacillate between his friends and his father and mooning over Soon Deok after she made it abundantly clear multiple times that she wasn't interested in him like that when they could have focused on his friendship with Shi Woo and his relationship with Seon Ah. I thought they could have handled his arc so much better because he was the most interesting main character of the four. He had so much at stake and his evolution could have been so interesting, maybe if he had been written better and they had had more time. Oh well. The OST was really catchy, though and despite the messy end, it was quite decent, better than some bigger disasters I can think of *coughHeirsSchool2015cough*

I watched way up to episode 11 or 12. It just lost steam for me. There was only one character and acting job that drove me crazy, Seo Ye ji. If your character is hokey the last thing you should do is play it to the hilt. It was mostly painful to watch. Anyway, i wouldn't say anything bad about the kids and their acting. I like Jeong Eu-gene. She's a beautiful girl with a beautiful voice. I didn't hate Hong Bin either. He can improve. He's not without charisma. I just thought it got bogged down in it's fantastical story line really.

Yes I also like the concept of this drama but not well executed. This was a fantasy martial arts drama. So:
*If only it has more martial arts... better choreograph martial art scenes, this could have been a better.
*If Seo Ye Ji's hair could have been in a lighter shade, she could probably have looked younger.
*If only they have spent more time in the production (this drama looked like it was done in a hurry)....

Nevertheless, I managed to finish this drama. The storyline is very good...it is just the execution was terrible. The story is alot better than CITT if I put it in comparison.

Lee Hyun Woo found a new fan. I would say it is a good drama choice. Just a little unfortunate that such a good drama in a terrible production. Nonetheless, LHW did a fantastic job. I know he is doing very well in movies, I hope he could find the same success in drama as a lead actor.

PS: the Park Bo Gum comparison is hilarious to me! I always thought Lee Hyun Woo looked like Lee Hongki, then when I saw Park Bo gum i was like "is that Lee Hyun Woo???" xD Same happened to me with Lim Joo Eun-Park Shin Hye (Heirs) and Onew-SJK (DFTS)... Honestly, I'm not sure what the deal is with Lee Hyun Woo. Many seem to praise him to high heavens in regards to his acting skills and having to 'baby sit' the idols in his most recent drama Moorim, but he was honestly decent at best in that drama. I'm not too fond of his acting in his other projects but he is watchable.

The deal with Lee Hyun Woo is that he is an actor and a good one at that. When I watch a movie or a Kdrama that he is in my expectation is that he will deliver a performance that moves me. In "To a Beautiful You", his acting and his storyline about his inner conflict about same gender attraction saved that show and made in interesting. Minho and Sulli were eye candy. There were a couple of other actors with lesser roles who gave good performances also that added to the viewing pleasure. In Moorim School LHW went from a really bad ass idol to a troubled caring young man looking for himself. His performance was believable. When he hugged Soon Doek after the car crash, you felt the emotion . It was in his voice and on his face. The quiet way he began to look after her, the dress, carrying her on his back during the final test, looking after her injuries, helping her to face her father, etc. these ideas and emotions were delivered to the audience via LHW performance. If you doubt his acting ability after viewing his performances in, "Brain", "Return of Iljimae", "Secretly, Greatly", and "Northern Limit Line" than you are not a film and drama fan. He has not grown into his manly face yet so his roles will be limited for a while but thank God he is continuing to work on his craft and I look forward to his future projects to watch his growth as an actor.

I think it was the writing, mainly. They had all these awesome characters and a plot with so much potential (it had so many little threads that would have been amazing if dealt with properly like the parallel between Dean Hwang and Chi Ang and the fantasy aspect) but the writing kind of let it all slip and only focused on two very unnecessary plot points. I think if it had been written better it could have been one of the really memorable ones.
May be now it'll be memorable for being so polarising.
