Yook Sung-jae courted to play rival to Park Bo-gum

First Park Bo-gum (Answer Me 1988), and now Yook Sung-jae (Village: Secret of Achiara)? If KBS’s upcoming palace romance drama Moonlight Drawn By Clouds can manage to score the cast it’s courting — which also includes Descended From the Sun’s Kim Ji-won — it would make the fantasy youth sageuk a can’t-miss show this summer.

Park Bo-gum is confirmed to play the lead character of Crown Prince Hyomyeong, while offers are out to Kim Ji-won and Yook Sung-jae to play his love interest and his rival, respectively. The drama takes a fictional spin on the life of a real Joseon prince, telling “the stories of Joseon youths that were not recorded by history,” which includes a central plotline of a young woman cross-dressing as a eunuch and falling in love with the prince.

Yook Sung-jae is up to play the third leg of the main love triangle, a rival to the prince who’s well-born and learned. Sigh, one day he’ll get his turn to win the girl, won’t he? He’s very good at twisting me up with second-lead sympathy (see: Who Are You—School 2015), which makes him a great choice for this kind of character, though I’ll be happy to welcome him to the land of first-lead roles. Ready whenever you are, dramaland.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds is an adaptation of a web novel of the same name, and will air as a KBS Monday-Tuesday drama in August.

I don't think we will ever get over the fact that Yook Sung Jae did not get the girl in Who Are You- School 2015, there was no closure, forever an open wound.
Someday maybe if dramaland would pair Kim Soo Hyun again with Yook Sung Jae as main leads , who will for sure end up together in a kdrama then that's the only time I can move pass that.
Or if they would date each other in real life, only then can I really move on and forgive the injustice.

OMV was such a snooze fest tbh, not even eye candies can make me continue watching.

Finger crossed the writing will be good! I don't doubt the lead castings, they are proven to be talented.

Now, if YSJ doesn't accept the role, they are going to offer this to Ji Soo wont they? The perpertual second lead but so good to ship.

I think enough dramas have proven by now that the cast alone cannot make or break a show. So Ji Sub and Binnie couldn't save their shows, and complete newbies have headlined runaway hits.

I'm so excited for the potential cast here, but before anything, I'm setting up an altar so the drama gods will bless us with an amazing script. Because that itself is the foundation of a good show. The hierarchy of kdrama needs is like this:

script --> acting --> direction/execution --> cinematography/music/etc.

Without a solid script buttressing the rest, no show can be 'great' even with an amazing cast and beautiful production values.

so please drama deities ... GIVE US A GREAT SCRIPT!!!
Has anyone read the original Manhwa? Is it any good? I'm almost too afraid to ask lol. The premise itself sounds a bit silly (i'm getting Scholar / Moon - Sun vibes here). Sadly my tolerance for infantile sageuk is not that high. But on the flip side, I really enjoyed Tamra (team park kyu ftw) when it aired, even though it was advertised as a fluffy teen sageuk. So execution really is everything. Scriptwriter ...do your job well, plzzz.

Aigoo... Why can't everyone just enjoy watching the drama without fighting on your keyboard against someone that you don't know who? I understand we are supporting/cheering our bias, but please respect each other.

I cannot begin to explain to you how traumatized I am by pianos at the moment. There is a piano in my school's student center and I completely spazzed out on my friend and went on a rant about how PD Lee Yoon Jung was scum of the earth and how all my hatred of Baek In Ho somehow transferred onto the actor SKJ (who I had a crushed on so hard before, I mean HIS EYES!)
Anyway, needless to say I ruined what was meant to be an awesome lunch date.

Yay!!! I'm still really hoping for Kim Ji Won as the female lead too, any other young actress I like is either busy rn or KBS would never go for in a million years ._.

Thank god Sungjae didn't do Moorim School so he could do this instead!! I hope Cube won't try and kill him this time by scheduling a BTOB comeback while he's filming. :/

So is Kim Ji-won really being courted for the female lead role, or are we being given false hope again? Because last I heard, KBS denied it :(

and their Monday-Tuesday slot hasn't seen a proper success since Good Doctor (2013), who knows how this will turn out (no idea about the writer and PD tbh). Either way, we'll have to wait till it's over to see how it turns out.

For Sungjae, at least his agency did confirm he's considering. While Jiwon agency hasn't said anything. argh.. only KBS said she's one of the candidates, like is she even in the running? srly though, after Sungjae i'm not gonna be surprised if they cast another idol that's trending these days :/ if so i'm out.

If YSJ is a trending idol, PBG is trending too. Also Sungjae is a good actor and has a decent acting experience. But people are already judging before watching him just because he has the title idol.

well i don't follow idols activity so can't blame me to be judgmental, until i can see it with my eyes. I'd gladly be surprised if he's a good actor. good for him, also for me as viewer.
I don't think you can compare Bogum though, in my case i've seen enough to tell what he's capable of. but since this is his 1st sageuk, gonna be a challenge for him.

But being judgmental is really wrong. It's an attitude we all should try to change no?! That is why there is a saying that 'Do not judge a book by it's cover' or that 'Innocent till proven guilty'. We shouldn't judge and take it as fact when you actually never really know anything about the matter. (This time you haven't seen YSJ act yet so shouldn't you be neutral?! Why would you think he (or any other idols or actors) is bad when you haven't even seen him act yet?). I mean i guess this was just my personality.

But anyway yeah Sungjae is a pretty good actor. Proof are Knetz who normally bashes all idols to hell who even tries to act are actually being happy and supportive of him being cast here. He acted as one of the lead in Village with great actors like Moon Geun Young, Shin Eun Kyung, Oh Joo Wan, Jang Hee Jin etc. and manage to act great alongside them. He actually got famous for his acting since his idol group never really get well known and promoted.

@Krystal_Anne: I never said SJ is bad though? fact is he's an idol actor and i've seen so many 'bad' ones out there that make me think twice whenever they cast an idol. Not saying every of them is bad, i've seen good ones, but just a few. Again that's my pref too.
My first impression when i saw SJ photo in the news is that he looks too young and 'modern'. I saw a little of the web novel and SJ doesn't fit the image of the second male lead in my head at all. so I was doubtful, but i've seen people saying he's good so yea i'll wait and see. If he's confirmed and turns out to be decent then i'll admit it. I don't hold onto my 1st impression and i'm always ready to be proved wrong.

Wow this summer's sageuk dramas are all filled with eye candy. Moon Lovers, Hwarang and now this??? I'm excited. I hope Sungjae accepts this offer. He is one of the very few idols actors who can actually act + it doesn't hurt that he's so good looking lol. And what is it with Kim Ji Won? Hasn't it been already sometime since this was offered to her?

It doesn't matter that KBS mon/tues times lot hasn't been lucky for a while. With Park bo gum headlining it'll be sure to be a hit since he's like the current "it boy" for new/young actors (since song joong ki is technically the IT BOY atm)

If ji won signs on (she has currently been very trendy) & Sungjae (who fans have been waiting for what seems like foreeeevvvvverrr for his kdrama return) this drama will def be popular. If not in Korea than atleast internationally cuz seriously three words: PARK BO GUM. I really don't see anything he's attached to flopping at this point

If YSJ accepted, isn't this gonna be his and PBG's first sageuk drama? I'm so excited but on the other hand, I don't really like sageuk with SFD as a special exception.

Personally I haven't seen SJ acting so i can't say much but only his look doesn't suit sageuk to me. plus, if Jiwon ever signs on (pleasepleasepleasee), i can't picture her with SJ. well i guess there's no chance for SLS from me then ^^,
In the end like many mentioned, it's still the script and directing; best actors can't save poorly written dramas..

Good! The cast keeps getting better and better.
Although YSJ won't get the girl, I'm happy he gets more experience, esp sageuk exp since it's a bit different than modern drama.
I think YSJ will become better in the future to cement his place as a leading man.

KJW was probably my fave in Heirs and I'm loving her in DotS so much. Add YSJ & PBG to that equation... boom! My only hope is that the writer/s do a good job with their characters. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for this one
