Drama viewership ratings for the week of Apr. 11–Apr. 17, 2016

There were some scheduling changes this week that affected most (most being two out of three) of the Wednesday-Thursday airing shows, leaving Descended From the Sun to net its best numbers yet—fitting, of course, for the show’s grand finale.

It’s interesting to note that while both Goodbye Mr. Black and Come Back, Ajusshi aired double headers on Thursday, their second episodes—which aired after Descended’s startling 38.8% finish—netted them the same kind of numbers they would’ve gotten even with the juggernaut competitor. Ajusshi also finished its run at a meager 2.6%, which is an unfortunate figure under any circumstance.

Backing up a bit, Jackpot and Monster seem poised to go neck and neck, which isn’t how the numbers looked during their first week. I can understand why Jackpot’s initially large numbers may be dwindling, but it’ll be interesting to see whether this trend carries into next week, possibly with melodrama Monster taking the lead. One thing seems fairly certain—Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Too bad for Come Back Ahjussi it's finale is too low from the previous episode. I can see why monster rating is dropping the first 2 episodes were good, I couldn't watch after episode 3

I've actually made it to ep 6 of Monster and I'm left scratching my head. So many ridiculous situations. The "job camp" is just bizarre. And the fact that our protagonist grew up and looks OLDER than a lot of the characters that were adults when he was young still bothers me. I could go on, but it is not worth my time.

Totally agree! I find it most disconcerting that Kang Ji hwan looks waaay older than most of his contemporaries, and even his mother's secretary he knew when he was teenager. Added to that, he has almost NO chemistry with the lead actress, she's a better fit with the second male lead.

In spite of that, after Pied Piper, it is the only other drama I am enjoying from the Monday selections. I haven't been able to sink my teeth into any of the others, yet.

Ahahaha, do you think that's why they put those two in bed together? The could have a good bromance if they weren't randomly fighting all the time.

I think that Kang Ji Hwan's character is supposed to be maybe 25ish? When he made the comment about wanting to dedicate his "youth" to the company I was like, "uh what?" Ok sure he lived on the street from when he was ~17 until Lee El's character found him again, and then went to the US for a couple years for eye surgery and a crash degree at a prestigious college. Can we chalk him looking 30s up to his "rough" life?

I feel bad for CBA too. Its rating already low, but with the finale episode became the lowest is too sad. Anyway, it was enjoyable drama.

I dropped Monster basically after the adults came. I don't know if I will pick up later. I am a fan of this writer's past drama like Giant, History of Salaryman & Empress Ki (I just not be able to finish Incarnation of Money ). But Monster seems to make me turn off after epi 2. After comparing the rating with the writer's previous works, Monster's rating yet to achieve even 10%.

KBS winning in every slot..
It's been quite sometimes since KBS had a good rating weekday drama..
Now I'm curious wether DotS replacement can achieve decent rating or not.. considering it goes head to head with Jisung's drama.

We will never know. If you look back at history, Jisung didn't really have not many good rating dramas. In fact, Chun Jung Myung of God of Noodles has more well-rated drama than Jisung.

Yeah, much as I love Ji Sung, almost the only dramas of his that got good ratings are the ones where he starred with Hwang Jung Eum. Practically all of HJE's dramas were ratings hits; she deserves to be called the ratings queen more than anyone else I can think of (except Kim Eun Sook lol). If Lucky Romance were starting now, I'd predict that MBC would win the timeslot.

Yes but not as highly rated as CHun Jung Myung's dramas. Domestically we don't really know who would rate well.

God luck to all of them!

My favourite drama of his (the only one I finished actually) is New Heart, which does not star Hwang Jung-eum and had good ratings. It all boils down to luck anyway.

No no, Pls come back ahjussi aired ep 15 one hour earlier last Thur, hence its finale (ep 16) was aired at the same timing as Dots. That's why it's ep15, which was aired before Dots, had a higher rating than its finale.

(ooh prob my first comment here)

Yes, @Prettysup is right - Come Back Ahjussi episode 15 was aired at 9pm and episode 16 was aired at 10pm - the same timeslot as DoTS. But I guess it suggests that CBA does have more fans than the usual ratings reflect - they probably watch CBA at another time (eg reruns, online etc) but they watch DoTS during the original airing?

On a sidenote, I don't know if anyone has asked this question before, but how are ratings calculated anyway? Like, is it the whole of Korean households with a television OR is it like a sample size, where they survey/track a number of households?

It really is such a shame that a quality drama such as Come Back Ajusshi gets so little recognition; it's an example of a perfect K-drama body-inhibiting, pure comedic hijinks of a story. 2.6% is definitely a low blow, but well, good stories don't need high ratings to speak of its awesomeness.

Descendants of the Sun definitely deserved its high-running 38.8% finale, because while I've seen a lot of people hating on it, I don't share that opinion. It's well-shot, and it's skillfully-acted. The introducing of female badass characters is something I enjoy epically, and the conflicting themes of our main characters sets an honest tone to their relationship. It's real, on a grand scale. I love the tenseness of the problems, though I admit there's a tad bit 'leave-your-brain-at-the-door-before-watching' element; but soldiers and doctors surprisingly give us a lot to think about here. Is it wrong to kill on a battlefield, if it's to save thousands of innocent lives? Or is it easier to save lives, knowing one wrong step might put the life of yet another innocent in one's hands?

High rating for DOTS is really well-deserved. The three dramas on this time slot are really good. My favourite is GMB.

Tough competition.

I agree. DoTS ratings are well deserved for the strong female character, respectful male lead and no love triangle alone. Other people should take note.

true. im surprised that many people so into this light storyline. i mean, mostly, people tend to watch drama with rich-poor leads, chaebol, cool man, very 'protagonist' female character, LOVE TRIANGLE LIKE A MUST, and no one says 'i love you' until one goes, hahahha.. very typical kdrama, but dots came with a 'fresh' idea. very well deserved. im just boring of drama with 'twist' story. :D

for those who hate dots, they perhaps are the fans of typical drama :D

I'm quite surprised by the finale ratings for DOTS. I feel that DOTS really struggled towards the end because there was pretty much no more story left to tell. It would have been more impactful if it just ended at episode 12, short and sweet. Or at least condensed episode 15 and 16? With the two male leads 'dead' so early in episode 15, it was pretty obvious that they weren't really dead and would definitely return, or there wouldn't be sufficient material to fill episode 16.

In my opinion, if you want to star watching a drama, you should start at ep 1 because generally dramas do the basic set up at that episode.

You can find it discussed in the Drama Hangout comments.

Re: 'unforgivable stupidness'.
I think many of those impressions may have been made too hastily. Some of the so-called 'flaws' were explained in later episodes when added information was given.

So start at the beginning. Just don't expect that any given episode will tell you everything there is to know.

I'm finding the show loads of fun.

I always try to give a show 4 episodes (especially since often the first 2 may be flashback episodes with a younger cast). Lawyer was a little wobbly in its first 2 episodes which were yes a prequel but it got better really fast. If you just go with it and power through the first 4 you'll be in a good position.

I couldn't get into Piped Piper , and I couldn't deal with back-stabbing betrayals in Goodbye Mr. Black. Come Back Ajusshi , I watched until episode 8,then it started to annoy me too much.
I loved DOTS although it was not perfect, and realism fell of a lot. Marriage Contract and Vampire Detective are my my crack.
I need to try out Monster .

Comeback, Ahjussi final episode's rating was really low. Not a surprise, because IMO the finale was messy in directing and editing.
But I saw "Han Hongnan" and "Oh Yeonseo" became trending topics in South Korea's Twitter on Thursday night.
I could finish this show purely for Rain & Oh Yeonseo, their acting were good.

If there is only one good thing from CBA is OYS & Rain were awesome in there, and credit to Honey Lee & Lee Min Jung too.

Hang Hong Nan vs Gi Tak. If I want to choose the favourite female leads between the three dramas in the same time slot, I will no doubt pick up Oh Yeon Seo over Song Hye Kyo & Moon Chae Won.

Thanks, Heads! Soo happy for Lawyer Jo Deul Ho! Ratings are slowly increasing and the story is progressing well. This show moves me. Also happy that DotS ended on a good note and with it highest ratings ever. It was a feel good show for me (which helped lessen the pain of missing Signal and SFD lol). On the other hand, I am sad and surprised to see that CBA ended with really low numbers. I think 2.6% is their lowest? I hope the actors don't get discouraged tho after this. I for one will definitely look forward to Oh Yeon Seo's next project. Great to see Marriage Contract doing great as well. Have to catch up with the latest episodes.

Five Kids really have high ratings tho I haven't seen much talk about it here. Is it worth the watch?

Five Children is so good, it's such an easy, relaxing watch that is perfect for the weekend. As a working mom, I find that I can easily relate to the lead actress struggles of balancing child care, work and paying the bills. But as far as romance goes, I'm most heavily invested in Sung Hoon's romance, he's such a doll!

It'd be nice if they managed to break 3%, but Ms. Temper still has to be a relative success, considering barely any of jTBC's dramas even broke 2% last year.

Really recommend this if you're not watching it yet. It's got a touch of Misaeng-ish corporate blues mixed with comedy and a strong female lead, and it's much more focused on the workplace than you would expect from the previews.

The romance part has been pretty underplayed if anything other than delving into how bitter Ms. Temper's married life has been (she has 3 ex's, after all). I'm wondering whether the leads will even go on a date by the time the show wraps up. Ms. Temper is really Ms. Snow Queen when she's not mad, and she's melting verrrrry slowly.

I think DB should change the ratings period covered...maybe start from last Sunday to this Saturday. This way we still get to see Sunday's ratings somewhere! IMO it beats leaving the Sunday rating slots empty every week (don't see the point). And even if it was updated later, I won't even go back to check it out. So my recommendation is to include the previous Sundays' ratings. At least this way we can still see how ratings generally fare on Sundays.

I care about the ratings, so I actually return to see them updated. It doesn't take that long to get the numbers, and it doesn't take much effort to check back with the post.

Also, the continuity would be off if they made the change you're suggesting. I want to know what happened to the ratings of a Saturday-Sunday show between the week's first and second episodes airing. Did the cliffhanger in Saturday's episode draw in more live viewers? Did a ridiculous plot point turn a significant number of viewers off? I couldn't know those things if they cut off the ratings at Saturday, and I had to wait an entire week before I could get (and comment on) the Sunday numbers.

I like it this way. Makes more sense to me, intuitively.

I like to see the ratings for Sundays too..with the glut of follow up articles sometimes it can slip off your mind. And if you notice commenting days after the post somewhat loses steam. So even if you post the ones from last Sunday I don't see how the continuity is that disrupted (well i don't watch weekend dramas much I guess). It's that or just opt to post the ratings much later. Like late Monday ?

My currently airing dramas in order of most to least favorite: 1. Yes, That's How It Is 2. Memory 3. Neighborhood Lawyer 4. Marriage Contract (this is getting less watchable though, as it goes on)

I tried watching Descended from the Sun but had a hard time making it through the first episode (had to do it in 3 installments!) I don't understand the popularity at all...

I watched 2 episodes of Monster (while doing other things) and found it to be: non-addictive MAKJANG. I also watched 2 episodes of Jackpot and found it rather tedious. For neither drama could I get far past the beginning of episode 3.

It's a pity Pied Piper's ratings are so low. It's such an intelligently crafted show. But I guess 2 percent isn't too bad for cable...it's ironic that Pied Piper's ratings are going down while Memory 's ratings are increasing.

Considering it is still achieved 2%, I thing the rating is OK because it is cable drama. Whats is sadder if for big 3 when they cannot even achieve 5% (like CBA & GMB).

Jo Deul Ho is so good. I started watching this week and it's pretty addicting, I must say. I realized that Park Shin Yang likes to choose dramas like this and his picks for his projects are usually trustable. I thought Jackpot would be the drama to watch for Mondays and Tuesdays, but it just isn't attracting my attention, partly because of it's just ridiculous how unkillable they're making JGS.

Also, I really thought DOTS might reach 40% and was kind of surprised that it didn't, considering the amount of hype that it had. But still 38.8% is nuts on any level. What a comeback for SJK from the army and SHG from her whole tax scandal.

I am so curious to how this week will go. Both 'God of noodles' and 'Entertainer' are premiering. Of course I am going to stay loyal to my man Ji Sung and choose Entertainer.

It will be interesting to know if SBS will snatch back the ratings from KBS. I hope Entertainer will lead!!!

And then 'Lucky Romance' will air after 4 weeks, so 8 episodes of Entertainer will have passed already. So I am happy even if Lucky Romance gains back ratings from Entertainer. Because that way both Ji Sung and Hwang Jung Eum will get fair share of ratings.

So both my biases are protected.

It's actually a pity a good quality show like Come Back Ahjussi lost, well, lost so tragically to Descendants of The Sun. Both in terms of ratings and popularity/buzz.
And as far as my drama watching experience, I realized that sometimes I really love and root these underdog dramas, the good quality dramas but have unfortunate ratings, The Village, Full Sun, Sassy Go Go, etc.

I am disappointed that Come Back, Ajusshi hasn't gotten better ratings, especially that very low last episode (was it aired during DOTS?). It blends comedy, drama, and romance so well and I absolutely love Oh Yeon-Seo in this. Seems like they had bad luck running at the same time as DOTS.
