Drama viewership ratings for the week of Apr. 18–Apr. 24, 2016

There was one new premiere this week in the form of SBS’s Entertainer, which replaced the slot previously occupied by Come Back, Ajusshi. Despite some unimpressed responses from overseas regarding the newcomer, it managed to score over double the numbers for its premiere than Ajusshi did for its finale.

Then again, both Entertainer and Goodbye Mr. Black seemed to benefit from losing Descended From the Sun as a competitor, though they still weren’t able to escape from its shadow—Descended aired three special episodes Wednesday-Friday, which were all rated higher than any other dramas currently airing in those slots.

If anything, Mr. Black has seen the most improvement as far as ratings are concerned, and rose to 9.4% for its even episode. Meanwhile, the weekend dramas aren’t seeing any big shakeups, with Five Kids poised to continue to do gangbusters until its finale, with Marriage Contract not in the running long enough to be a formidable contender. (It’s close though, and probably would’ve had a shot if it weren’t the length of a usual miniseries.)

How come that DOTS specials still gain much more ratings than Goodbye Mr. Black and Entertainer?
The specials even had ratings many dramas still dream about this year. LOL
Everyone must be SOOOO IN LOVE with Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo in Korea.

I read that Entertainer re-aired an edited version of its first ep yesterday (23rd)? And the 2nd ep as well (today)? This is the first time I've ever heard such a thing! I wonder did and will the ratings improve..

Actually TV stations in Korea usually re-run weekday dramas in weekend. I don't know why, maybe to catch up with the viewers unable to watch in weekdays?
But re-edited episode for re-run like Entertainer is rarely happened.

Don't know if I watched the re-edited version (think it was the original) and though it was a very solid 1st 2 eps.

But lacking in the makjang elements (which I much prefer) that many Korean and other Asian viewers seem to like (hope the re-edit didn't move into that direction).

Pied Piper is AWESOME so it's a shame about the ratings (it's not bad for cable, but still) I do understand how this has happened though, considering that the first couple of episodes did it no favours, but honestly the second half of this drama really picked up, so it's a shame that the viewership was already lost from the start.
I'm so glad I chose to stuck with it though, totally worth it.

Yeah, I'm pretty bummed out at the ratings of Pied Piper for a show that is really so good. I read an article that said the absence of pretty flower boys or idols made a lot of people lose interest in the drama. Glad that its only 16eps, i cannot imagine how many kleenex will be spent if its 50ish eps. And i might not able to continue as well, because its gonna be emotionally exhausting.

Sad, because its one drama i watch this year dilligently. I don't read recaps before watching. I followed its fan's IG and YouTube account. Just because.

I don't know how i appear tomorrow at the office without explaining my panda-eyes..

I couldn't take it. I stopped at episode 10 and just went to the recaps. If she makes it, I'm going to finish it out. I don't even know if I want to read the recap if she dies.

I think Memory is worth watching just for Lee Sung-min's acting alone.

The chaebol thing is still there. Recently however, I have taken to ignoring any chaebol characters. This allows me to enjoy shows such as Marriage Contract, by ignoring the chaebols and focusing on the otp.

I like Lee Joon Ho and Yoon So He as the junior lawyer and secretary.

If JTBC wants higher ratings than Memory, they should:

- Reduce scenes of the office workers.

- Increase scenes between Ok Da Jung and her 3rd ex-husband's character, Yeon Jeong Hun. His charisma obliterates everything in his path. Whenever they share a scene together, it's Snap! Crackle! and Pop!

- Increase scenes between ODJ and NJG's son b/c they're just adorable together.

- Nam Bong Gi's scenes are perfect, but they should've paired him with Min Do-Hee's character. The world makes more sense when he's with her (instead of with Jang Mi Ri).

I agree with most of your points really. I appreciate how the writer tries to incorporate all the characters (which is something Korean dramas don't do enough), but it's just not as entertaining. LYW has great chemistry with YJH and Woojoo and I love their scenes together. But it's difficult to say that increasing them will definitely help the ratings.

I'm looking forward to the next episode though. Now that YJH is finally in Lovely at least we get this one

Increase(d) scenes between Ok Da Jung and her 3rd ex-husband’s character, Yeon Jeong Hun. His charisma obliterates everything in his path. Whenever they share a scene together, it’s Snap! Crackle! and Pop!

"But it’s difficult to say that increasing them will definitely help the ratings."

It's not impossible b/c:

- the three office workers are frustrating and annoying underdog characters I don't care for or root for. The less of them, the better. I blame the writing b/c Misaeng did it so well, hence the high ratings.

- Yeon Jeong Hun is a sexy bastard; he incites fear and awe, yet impressively displays hints of vulnerability. I need more of him, which is too bad that he is just a "guest appearance".

- ODJ and NJG’s son's relationship is heartwarming w/ the perfect touch of understated humor. If their cute relationship doesn't move the heart, then the heart is probably made of stone.

- Nam Bong Gi is a really well written character and (surprisingly) wonderfully acted by Chan Sung. I love his relationship w/ everyone (i.e. Dad, Nam Jung Gi, little brother and ODJ), and the humor, lightheartedness and confidence he displays in living life the way he wants. I just hope he gets recognition for all the help he's anonymously/quietly given to his hyung and Lovely. My heart broke for him when NJG belittled him for being a good for nothing. It's a tragedy they didn't give him the girl he deserves: Min Do-Hee’s character.

And the director does a good job of balancing the drama, humor and self introspection (NJG's voice over), and grounding them in reality. I also give him a nod for using good instrumental music and editing them successfully in quiet and tense scenes.

Every time I'm ready to give up on this show, these things continually bring me back.

<– the three office workers are frustrating and annoying underdog characters I don’t care for or root for. The less of them, the better. I blame the writing b/c Misaeng did it so well, hence the high ratings.

Oh yes! I'm sooo tired of the three office workers, I also don't care or root for them, particularly not Jang Mi-ri (which is sad, they could have made her a really interesting character with the sexual harassment story they had earlier) and the guy who think he has dibs on Jang Mi-ri over Bong-gi.

Sadly, I find a lot of the scenarios in the drama pretty contrived (the boss of Lovely... surely, he'd ruin every company? I just can't take the guy seriously....). It's not that what they are experiencing can't happen but the way it plays out in the drama just isn't compelling. Misaeng wrote it right, this drama is going for comic extremes and it backfires.

3rd ex husband is a total drag. I mean, all the scheming he's doing... is there no work these people have to do rather than just play around with people and companies to get back at the ex-wife???

The bits I love: Ms. Temper, Woo-jo and Bong-gi. More of them please, together.

0

I don't like Bong-gi though. I understand that he's there for the comedy and he's a useful character who does all the odd jobs/Ms. Temper missions. However, I can't agree with his "philosophy" especially after I watched episode 12. He says he's just choosing to live differently. I wouldn't say anything if he was (financially) independent, but he is living this life at the expense of his brother so how can he say anything about the way his brother lives. I think he's annoyingly immature.

@alua: I don't care about the employees either. I think this is a failure on the scriptwriter's part but despite that he/she is doing a great job as a rookie writer. I think it would be reasonable to have some of them being tempted by the bribes, but I think the writer is trying too hard to create circumstances such that they have "no choice" but to accept the money. And the worst thing is that those reasons failed to resonate with the viewers. It'll be much better if not all of them succumbed to temptation, and that the culprits actually got punished. Jang Miri is an exceptionally irritating character, but that has something to do with the actress as well (she's pretty crap even by my standards).

The writer is probably trying to find a balance between drama and slice-of-life. It's not working too well, but I'm not too concerned about those elements which just seem a bit too deliberate. I've seen much much worse in kdramas. And to be honest, the drama branded itself as a rom-com. I don't think we're supposed to expect it to be Misaeng-like. It just so happens that they are kind of similar, and people are now hoping to see the same things from the drama, which just isn't going to happen. I personally like it mainly for its feministic undertone, which I doubt is something you'll get from Misaeng.

0

"Sadly, I find a lot of the scenarios in the drama pretty contrived (the boss of Lovely… surely, he'd ruin every company? I just can't take the guy seriously….). It's not that what they are experiencing can't happen but the way it plays out in the drama just isn't compelling."

Thankfully there's the FF button.

"3rd ex husband is a total drag. I mean, all the scheming he's doing… is there no work these people have to do rather than just play around with people and companies to get back at the ex-wife???"

I don't care for that either, but I explained what I like about his character below.

0

@paroles

I don't totally disagree with you about Bong-gi, I have to say I didn't like him at all at the beginning. But he's also one of the few characters that has actually shown growth. He's still immature and he's still living off his brother, but he has started to work and he has also opened his eyes to the hard work his brother does. I think the next step is due to come – even if I don't think he necessarily needs to become a 9-5 office worker like everyone else. And he's also not wrong with some of the things he's said to his brother (just like his brother isn't totally wrong about what he says about him) – who is, indeed, an almost totally absent father to Woo-jo.

<I think it would be reasonable to have some of them being tempted by the bribes, but I think the writer is trying too hard to create circumstances such that they have “no choice” but to accept the money.

I just don't buy that ALL of them would be tempted AND accept the bribes. People are different. Even people who are desperate for money are different – some will steal, others will starve themselves to death.

< I personally like it mainly for its feministic undertone, which I doubt is something you’ll get from Misaeng.

Well, Misaeng had a different focus and it was told from the viewpoint of a young, male employee. We do get several episodes that focus on women and the discrimination they face, so I think similar issues as to here are acknowledged, they just don't cover the whole drama like here. I too appreciate the feministic undertone here, I am, after all, purely watching for Ms. Temper (though I felt she took a backseat the last two episodes).

Yeah, I don't think he needs more screen time at all. True, he's charismatic and sexy, but he's also the most unrealistic character in the drama imo. I mean, investors taking over a small company is realistic, but what's with his "the only thing people love is money" credo? That's the kind of worldview you see from cackling one-note villains in shounen manga, not in real life. I mean, it's obvious that he was written that way for the sake of the plot, so that our main characters show their growth by siding with Da-jung and her principles rather than falling into the trap of expediency, but it's a bit contrived.

The guy absolutely doesn't need more screen time. And his whole scheming is just *eyerolls*. Hasn't he got better things to do? Does he have no life?

<so that our main characters show their growth by siding with Da-jung

See I wish I could say that... but I feel there's been little growth. They now take pride in their work, but beyond that everyone in the office just seems incredibly dumb (they are still all ready to sell each other out). I don't know if it's 16 or 20 episodes we've got, but if it's 16 than I'm not sure we can expect much more change if they have barely changed so far.

0

Yeah. He's only been worth it for one scene: Where Jung Ki indirectly answers Da Jung and the 3rd ex's challenge that he is living proof that someone can sacrifice money for principles. At least 3 episodes with so much screen time and only worth it for one scene which he wasn't part of.

Aside from that, he's corporate Mr. Wilson ruining Dennis's fun.

0

I'm not talking about his individual scenes w/ the other boring, incompetent characters. Yes, they dragged the scheming plot over way too many episodes. It should've all happened in one episode with him becoming the CEO of Lovely by the end of the episode.

What I do like is when he and ODJ share the same scene (which took forever) b/c I want to know more about what happened in their past for them (esp. ODJ) to become who they are in the present, facing-off from opposing points of view. I like ODJ as a character, but to not see her growth, which we've only seen hints of, is a disappointment.

This should really be in the hangouts thread.

Netizens are still on DOTS high and the fact that media/KBS is also using that hype.
KBS2 listened to netizens and changed the Producers in first few ep. That was a gave mistake. I thought Producers first 2 ep had potential to be a success. I think the Entertainer first ep dragged a bit with unnecessary fillers like Sukho and Mr kim plotting to get Jackson 1st song to be in top. By ep 2, it moved swiftly. I honestly believe that Hyeri was a miscast. Not for the age gap reason but it was too quick comeback after R88. Netizens kept comparing to her R88 character. TBH, she has not proven to be a lead actress. So, SBS can re-edit the first 2 ep and air but there needs to be shift in focus for writing. I personally prefer band bromance, newbie-mentor relationships, their struggles to come ahead in the ruthless world of kpop. I prefer no lovelines or just keep it to a minimal.
