Let’s Eat spinoff Drinking Solo comes to tvN this fall

I’m actually unsure if this new series will have anything to do with the Let’s Eat franchise other than sharing a PD, but a drinking version of the food-obsessed series has been in the works for some time, and now tvN has given it a title and a timeslot on Mondays and Tuesdays this fall. It’s going to be called Drinking Solo (more literally A Man and a Woman Who Drink Solo), about — you guessed it — single people who drink alone.

Even though that sounds kind of depressing on paper, thematically that’s right up Let’s Eat’s alley, since the foodie franchise is all about living alone, eating alone, and making friends with your neighbors so that you’re no longer alone. If you look past the mouth-watering food porn, it’s actually a really heartfelt series about going beyond your studio apartment and connecting with the people around you.

This time they’ll be connecting over drinks, though I’m sure they’ll have plenty of food to go with, since both seasons of Let’s Eat had their share of drinking too. It doesn’t seem as appetizing as the food version, but maybe that’s a good thing as far as liver health is concerned? The series plans to explore everything from wine to traditional alcohol, and the growing trend of solo drinking.

PD Choi Gyu-shik (Let’s Eat 2) and writer Myung Soo-hyun (main writer on Rude Miss Young-ae seasons 5-14) are at the helm. The premise itself doesn’t necessarily excite me, but if you got Yoon Doo-joon to play his Let’s Eat character again, I’d watch that. Hell, I’d probably watch 15 seasons of that.

The Monday-Tuesday lineup for tvN has been confirmed, so we’ve got: rom-com Oh Hae-young Again in May, Bring It On, Ghost in July, and then Drinking Solo in late August or early September. Then Season 15 of Rude Miss Young-ae follows in October/November.

I'm gonna check it out cause I loved the first two seasons, but I don't drink so I hope they put lots of food and a great story to hook me. (Or Kim Seulgi or Song Jaerim, I'm not very choosy. :P)

I don't know how he only has Let's Eat and Splish Splash Love for anything major. He's so awesome. I wish he had dramas to do left and right. When there is low volume in good dramas, I rewatch scenes from those two so I could get my fix of dramas and Yoon Doo Joon :(

I wish Doojoon would be in a new+good drama soon though. :)

It's a good thing his group are actually all good singers otherwise I'd be a lot more annoyed by this than I am.

(though a look at recent news about them tells me they lost a member, shame about that)

yeah, after some controversies, Heungseng left the group. It's pity because HS got an unique distinctive voice. But that means that YDJ will have more part in singing. He got a very good voice as well. I like his acting along with his vocal.

damn, it was that one who left?! (the one who has the part right before the chorus of On Rainy Days, if anyone needs a reference point).

It's a double shame then - Doojoon is a competent singer but that guy was an actually great one. His + their lead singer's voices were what lifted Beast's sound past regular kpop into the realm of stuff I'd actually remember.

I haven't seen a food-centered drama I didn't like—I don't see any reason why that love wouldn't extend to alcohol-related dramas as well :)

I also would very much be interested if Yoon Doo Joon was connected to the project too...preferably with Kim Seul Gi :)

Oooh. I'm so looking forward to this. The premise speaks to me as a fellow lover of alcohol (the living alone and being single bit also helps further the connection). I shall be stocking my bar starting from this month so by the time the drama rolls along, I have just enough Rum, Vodka, Hennesy, Gin, Scotch Whiskey and Palmwine to help me bond with the characters. Nothing says I'm trying to understand your point of view oh amazing character than a shot for every time you down a glass. Oh the things we do for the dramas we love ?.

I wish I could. But Nigeria's undergoing some import changes so right now, they're cracking down hard on the importation of liquor. Hmmm. But I do have friends coming in from the States in the summer. I can always have it shipped to them and they can bring me a bottle. Or two. Or three. Lol. Thanks for reminding me of that option :).

Oh yeah. The deliciously fermented alcoholic beverage every Nigerian child has tasted at one point in their childhood. It has the whitish consistency of rice wine and tastes amazing, even whilst its intoxicating you. Go to any Eastern and midwestern Nigerian wedding and you are guaranteed to be served amazing Palm wine or as we call it, Palmie for short ;).

Sounds delish! You would think I could find it in Florida. (We have a lot of different kinds of palm trees, including coconut palms.) However I've been looking for a 'wee' bit and can't find any stores that carry it. I guess I need to go to Nigeria!

Yup. Or if you have any Nigerian friends who are making a trip back home, you can always ask them to bring you back a bottle or a keg :).

@Itenoria

I wish. Unfortunately it looks like I will have to wait till I or one of my friends travel. Is their a good brand or is it pretty much individualized?

By the way, I hope your friends bring you soju. I like to drink it when I'm eating Korean sauce marinated beef in lettuce wraps. Yum!

Oh - eatyourkimchi did a taste test on soju and compared brands. You might want to check it out if you haven't.

Weird but I couldn't reply your comment below. Will be sure to check the site out. Thanks :). Palm wine doesn't really have a brand. The palm wine tappers just climb up the tree to tap the wine and they sell it in kegs and jugs. I think there are some brands that have started attempting to export it, but nothing tastes as nice as fresh palm wine. If you ever get the chance to travel to Lagos, Nigeria, holler me up and I will direct you to just the right place. Pounded yam with Egusi soup washed down with Palm wine is life ;) Lol.

Will do. Thanks for the info.

I know everyone likes alcohol but i hope this show will be more than just promoting alcoholism. I get the feeling it won't touch on responsible drinking?

Oh. Yes, I agree with everyone that this would be great for Kim Seul-gi. I think, in that case, I'd only want a Yoon Do-joon cameo? I don't know, sort of like a passing of the baton? I think that would be cute. It would also be hilarious if their characters were at odds with each other. Oh guys, I'm already imagining this. And then make Song Jae-rim the actual lead...

Ok, I might be getting a little ahead of myself. I think this premise could go either way. It's fine to celebrate drinking, as long as it isn't a complete drunk-fest. I find the focus on 'singles drinking' reassuring because it makes me think that maybe it'll be about them drinking less when they're together? This is kdrama though, so it could be the opposite...

It's not just you. For me, dramas are an escape from reality, so I don't mind if they're unrelatable to me. Besides, like girlfriday, I can probably watch anything that has Yoon Doo Joon's Let's Eat character in it.

As much as I love doojoon, and I mean ♥ L-O-V-E ♥, this doesn't sound like a good idea. I'm just going to have to pray to the weather gods -or whoever can grant my wish that he gets cast in a saeguk next. DJ speaking in saeguk dialect is dreamy. (I swear I'm normally not this shallow..)

but you're not wrong at all, he really was dreamy in SSL <3

and this is an even more shallow observation but he is ridiculously, ridiculously handsome in a way that's actually plausible in sageuks (those quirky teeth just make him even dreamier and I love that he hasn't had them straightened).

In a funny way, the fangs are just the finishing touch to (I repeat) his ridiculously, ridiculously handsome face. Which also looks gratifyingly free of any cosmetic/surgical interference. Though I probably wouldn't think he was as handsome if he wasn't also such a good actor.

(and I have equal-opportunity love for fangs btw, I've been a Kirsten Dunst fangirl for over a decade now)

Both seasons of LE were fun (better than many K-romcoms that have gotten higher ratings).

Season 1 had the better supporting cast (the scene in the restaurant where the 3 gals competed for Yoon Doo-joon's character's attention/affection was one of the funniest scenes in a K-romcom) whereas I liked the lead female character and relationship better in Season 2.

Not sure how I feel about this drinking-focused series bringing back Yoon Doo-joon's character (maybe save that for a LE3?) rather than starting w/ a fresh actor/character (definitely on the bandwagon for KSG to play the female lead).

As much as I love his character in LE, I hope this will have a different main character. I want Doojoon in another role !

I'm actually curious to see how much time the characters in this drama will spend drunk/passed out/hungover, and how that'll factor into things. I haven't watch anything Let's Eat related, so I'm not sure how those handled balancing food porn with story, but I feel like drinking might have more of an impact on the story than food would.

Or maybe this will be a drama filled with tons of responsible drinkers except for maybe one or two characters and moments when something terrible happens to them, so there wouldn't be much of a difference between this and the usual dramas, outside of telling you how great that really old bottle of grapes tasted.

(And now I'm thinking of having one of the leads as a "snobby" wine taster who's partly a sham - at least when it comes to their snobbiness and some of their expertise - and partly just really, really likes wine.)
