Oh Snap! Honey Lee’s got it and flaunts it

The former Miss Korea’s still got it, and makes an appearance as one of the fittest women on earth in a preview for next month’s edition of Cosmopolitan magazine. If spring spreads are all about the flowers, summer spreads are all about sun and water, which these photos have plenty of.

Having wrapped up filming for Come Back, Ajusshi semi-recently, the actress seems to be taking a break like all normal people do, with infinity pools and impossibly perfect beach hair. She’s one of those actresses who captivates on screen even in small parts, so here’s hoping she might land a lead role next.

She was joking. I'm black and find it not offensive at all.

And black people do tan in the sun so it's not even totally inaccurate.

Well, on the flip side, I'm black (the person who replied could be as well), and I find that offense

---

I lost some of my comic book knowledge and had to look him up. I was expecting a tan dude, not a black dude. Just because one person who is of the "victimized" group doesn't find it offensive doesn't mean it absolutely isn't.

I've found in my line of work (child care) telling a racial joke for the joke side, isn't the smartest way to go. Avoiding racial jokes, leaves no one to be offended.

Also, unless they were saying Blade is darker during the summer, it is inaccurate. He does not have an olive skin complexion. Representation which is seriously lacking in that genre (and I'm not even a fan of the genre)

Saying you don't like a woman because you think she looks like an escort is pretty misogynistic. I mean, I don't think anyone dislikes male actors because they think they look like male hookers.

I'm not trying to specifically call you out, but point out there's a sexist double standard in the way we view women vs men.

^^^ Bless you. I love this comment so much.

In dramaland, the male body is basically deified. Nobody complains about gratuitous shower scenes and random flashings of choco abs. If an actor oozes with sex appeal, we ladies call him smoldering and swoony. If a (young) actor oozes with sex appeal, we call him a noona killer.

On the flip side, actresses and female celebrities tred precarious waters. Too sexy, and there are rounds of slutshaming and vamp-calling. Too innocent, and you might be called "fake" or "aegyo queen." Someone may find Honey Lee escort-esque, but one comment section later, another commenter will call Park Shin Hye a cold fish. While nobody complains about EXO's pelvic thrusts, young female idols are shamed for dressing/behaving/acting inappropriately of their age (while I don't agree with k-pop's need to hypersexualize everything, I do think unfair double standards are out there. You can't shame individual female idols for hypersexualization perpetuated by the kpop *system*, all while salivating over your fave boy group's latest mv).

these days we ladies like to complain about misogyny and watch shows with girl power and "strong female characters" (whatever that means lollll), but I do think we need to take a pause and consider whether or not we ourselves are perpetuating sexist standards and double standards with our words and attitudes towards other women.

Required fields are marked *

Thank you! You have articulated something we need to be reminded of often. We can't really complain about the double standard, if we are helping perpetuate it. I find these photos fairly tame compared to some. Honey Lee may have started out as a beauty queen, but she has taken that success and worked hard to become so much more. That, to me, is the best kind of female empowerment.

There was a school of feminist thought that sexual freedom for women is empowering. The ability for women to admit they are sexual beings and express those feelings outwardly and freely is a step toward equality not away from it. I happen to be one of those feminists. Slut shaming is not in vocabulary because I don't happen to believe in "sluts". I can't seem to find anyone that can come up with a clear enough description of a "slut". "I know one when I see one" just isn't good enough for me.

Required fields are marked *

I don't wanna take us too far from the topic at hand, but "slut shaming" is not necessarily a term that agrees that there is such a thing as a "slut." It's a term that takes into account how some people will call or imply that a woman is a "slut" for doing almost anything, even if it's only tangential to acknowledging her sexuality. So people who use the term, including me, are not saying that "sluts" actually exist, we're acknowledging that certain critiques of women are nothing more than shaming them being anything close to sexual. The fact that the definition of "slut" is so slippery is kind of the point. Women can't do much of anything without some people thinking it's too much, i.e. "slut shaming" them. The point of slutwalks, whether one agrees with their utility or not, is that they take on the same confrontational attitude with the word "slut" as "slut shaming" does.

All Honey Lee did here was take a few photos wearing clothing that shows how fit she is, bathing suits, work out garb, a tennis outfit. And at least one person thinks she's a "slut" for it. (It's actually even more specific. That person thinks she might as well be getting paid to have sex with people because of these photos. What a leap.)

I don't comment often, only really started this year. But this conversation pushed me out of the woodworks.

I loved the spread until the last picture. It was too much for me. And someone mentioned below it could be seen as "honeymoon pics for her new husband." So keep them private. (I know it's not.)

But on the double standard front, I hated Yeo Jin Goo's recent photo shoot. It was too much. It looked like a love motel spread (that's my anime reference for the day lol). Why didn't I comment at the time? I thought it was too negative and I wanted to let people who enjoyed it enjoy it.

But man vs woman isn't my issue. It's the oversexualiziation of anyone. Honey looks amazing. But the last picture is too vulnerable and willing to me. Yes, sensuality should not be denied. But same as with Yeo Jin Goo, there is a tasteful way to display it. That last picture wasn't it for me.

I think was the OP meant by "escorty" is not to slut-shame (ew, I hate even thinking that phrase, let alone typing it). I think they were commenting on the "I'm available-ness" of some poses she's asked to do, here and other times. Imo, the rest of the spread shows power and the last picture stripped it all away.

On the showers front: I appreciate a good shower scene, because it usually involves intense acting. I welcome the increase of female shower scenes in kdramaland. But then again, the shower scenes aren't "gratuitous" for me, but plot, particularly character, progression points.

On the kpop front: As a loyal EXOL who saw the teasers, debut and have been biased toward them since, let me just say "not all EXOLs welcome the hip thrust." A groups of us hate those and the crotch grab even more. So when I say a female group is being overly sexual, I'm judging them by the same standard I judge men.

So staying silent probably doesn't help. But don't think no straight woman is offended when males do it. And don't assume all kpoppers love their half-naked, hip thrusting oppas.

Next time, please ask unbiased questions to get the OP's deeper thoughts and don't just bandwagon hating on 3 lines. That's definitely not enough information.

I think that's everything i wanted to say. Fight on, my fellow Beanies!

0

Nobody complains about shower scenes but they are a joke. We all know and make jokes about it. Don't act as if people don't know that.

Not one person here was talking about this actress. Their opinion about a mere editorial has nothing to do with the model. Before worrying about sexist standards and double standards you should maybe pay more attention to what people actually think and say before judging them.

With all due respect, I think you misinterpreted some of the comments above.

I don't think anyone is doing any judging per se? Mk and Dora are talking about a difference in how we evaluate the way actors vs actresses are presented in the media.

The shower scenes I actually agree with. Basically those showers are thrown in for an actor to show off his body. Yes, you are right that we joke and make fun of them.... But I think mostly for their cheesy and cliche camp value. Still though, a lot of us giggle and appreciate them to, thanking the drama gods for army service and all.

This Honey Lee photoshoot is basically like a shower scene in that she gets to show off how physically fit and healthy she is in a non-offensive and harmless manner.

So why all the controversy?

When a male celebrity shows off his bod, no one will ever call him escort-y.

See my drift?

0

Or find another way to look at it.

To me she looks like a young woman on her honeymoon posing for her new husband. Nothin' wrong with that.

I was just thinking she is not used to women having so much make up. Nothing wrong with her poses. They are not even as suggestive as those spread eagled or thrusting hips by idols.

What's wrong with the commenters today? Can't they appreciate a woman posing? At least her smile looks magnetic and compelling. Some of the spreads by teenage actresses are the ones which looks wrong.

I was just admiring her hips/curves and thighs. And thinking about some of the emancipated legs I see in Kdramas from the too skinny actresses.

Consider that Indira may have been commenting on the style of the photoshoot and the way honey lee is being portrayed, rather than commenting on the woman herself. It is possible to have a problem with the prevalent objectification of female celebrities without "slut-shaming" them.

0

so should we be slut-celebrating?

Where is the boundary? can someone walk down the street totally naked ? or maybe pasties and a g string?

If someone went to their local market wearing next to nothing, would you celebrate her or him? Or would you think that is a bit much?

I don't see the point in anyone advertising themselves as a sexual being, whats the point? self -esteem? Its especially odd if you already have a partner, would you then be advertising for an affair?

0

Required fields are marked *

@ar

We shouldn't be shamming or celebrating! If it's not against the law, it's their personal choice, you might have an opinion and that's your business. :)

The thing is as far as the issue here goes, Indira had an opinion about the style of an editorial, and people act as if she was talking about a person.

0

I did! Nowhere she said anything about the actress, she was talking about a style. What's wrong with that?

In her opinion the look was what she defined as escorty, which she did not like very much in THIS editorial. She didn't even say it a style she always disliked. She didn't even say anything against escorts! Wouldn't be a laugh if you are all being so judgemental about this damn word and Indira herself just happens to be in this profession? And what would be wrong with that?

Btw, if I say a woman is dressed in a vulgar way I'm not slut shamming her it's just fashion commentary! I could easily say the same thing about a man, it has no relation to my opinion about the woman or the man.

People need to know to separate things better, to not jump to conclusions.

They should be allowed to dislike some things without fear people might misinterpret completely and judge them harshly and say rude things like many of you are doing to Indira.

Thanks for your support. Lol, I'm not from the "profession" ; and I really don't care about the amount of clothing she is wearing on the pic. In my country, people even sunbathe naked in public, so not prudish either.
Maybe things got lost in translation (I'm esl here), but as some understood, I was critical of the styling/pose.
She "looks" escort-y in the pic (1 &4), in my opinion, never said she is though.
It's a pity bc the shoot is fabulous and she is a gorgeous model and actress. I'm just fed up with the "sexy" pose, I've seen it over and over and over for the past 3 decades. Again, feel free to disagree.

0

I personally disliked the 4th pose and don't blame Honey at all. But I dislike that she had been asked to pose like that. It takes away from the power of the shoot. And I've felt that way about a couple photo shoots with her. Because she is drop dead gorgeous, directors seem unable to be reasonable and creative.

Smile on, Indira!

0

Cheer up Indira! I like Honey Lee but even I got that you were talking about the way this was shot (with more emphasis on her body than anything else, like her lovely dimples) and not about her personally.

We live in an age where having an opinion that doesn't jibe with the majority is seen as something worth being hunted for as so many people here have proven. (For pity's sake, it was ONE comment and far from offensive but you jumped on the poor girl. Her having an opinion, even if it was one you didn't like, won't hurt you.)

To those who've been attacking her and twisting her words to suit your agendas, I leave you with the words of Evelyn Beatrice Hall. Try to live by them.

Sit down.

I don't understand the difference between the OP having an opinion and anyone else having a different opinion, and saying so. Literally everyone who commented is expressing their opinion. Why is OP's more worthy of protection than anyone else's?

I never liked that Hall quote, but why doesn't it extend to the people who disagree with Indira?

Guys, any real conversation worth having is going to include a difference of opinions. Gumming of the works by pointing out that *opinions are happening* is neither necessary nor productive.

I think everyone is deciding what the OP means instead of reading what they're saying. When did they mention bikinis or prostitution for that matter? An escort and a prostitute are two separate things, the biggest being one is legal and one is not.

And yes, feminism is important. But sometimes people seem overzealous and almost on the side of misandry or misogynistic toward fellow women. That's not the point of the women who founded feminism. Human rights and EQUALity was the point. Judging men and women by the same standard.

I love Honey Lee!

She's a great actress - I've loved her in everything I've seen her in so far, and she's one of those actresses that aren't afraid to look frumpy or silly in a role, which is a plus.

And she's also gorgeous, but more importantly (and I do know this is not really something you can tell without knowing someone personally, but it's the subjective vibe I get), she seems like a really nice, down-to-earth person. Someone it'd be fun to just get a cup of tea and chat with.

That said, these pictures are not my favorite pictures of her, and I think that may be part of what above commentators have picked up on. This photoshoot is very sexualized, and (except for the cute flower-in-hair pic which I think is adorable) intentionally shows her in a rather flatly sexualized and "on display" way. This is nothing to do with her; this is the photographer, the concept of the photoshoot, the way the pics were photoshopped after, and the culture which governs the ways that beautiful female celebrities are marketed (as sexual objects).

I love Honey Lee, and although she looks great as always, personally I think this photoshoot did not do her justice.

I'd love to see her in another main role soon! A romantic comedy, please. I love her in romantic comedies. :-)

Honey Lee started her career in a beauty contest, not a big stretch to "sexy concepts" next. Beauty contests after all aren't much more than displaying women's attributes like some kind of meat market. I really don't believe the people are objecting here because of the overall objectification of women in media. They're making a value judgement about "sexy" concepts. Perhaps you are too. Some women happen to believe that "sexy" concepts are empowering not the other way around.

0

TJ, I don't know why (or if) other people are objecting; I am only speaking for myself. Also, I'm not objecting - I'm simply saying that this is not my favorite photoshoot of her, and that personally, I think a different concept would have done her more justice.

That's not a value judgement. I do believe it's problematic that women are frequently objectified in the media; that it's often a meat market, as you put it. However, this is a general social problem; it's not something that I will judge any woman who brings out sexy pictures for.

0

The media does "objectify" women but some women are in complete control of their public image. It's also empowering for women to be able to opening declare that we too are sexual beings with needs, desires and preferences. Don't really know how we'll reconcile the two perhaps we never will.

0

Required fields are marked *

I agree entirely - women should definitely be allowed to be sexual beings, and to do so as openly as they might wish. And with society being what it is, this does become unfortunately tangled up with the existing issue of women being objectified in the media.

I remain optimistic, however. In time, I believe that the image of women in the media will become more well-rounded (as it already is for men, who are not objectified in the same way, and who can do the occasional sexy shoot with no issues, because they are in no danger of being reduced to only this aspect).

It fear will be a while still until we get there, though.

Gorgeous pictures and she looks great with the tan. I don't quite understand the "sexy concept" objections we're seeing here. She's showing very little skin. She's only posed in two photos that can be construed as "sexy" and neither of them are overtly so. She's a grown woman not a 17 year old idol trainee. If you're doing a summer pool or beach shoot shouldn't you be wearing beach wear?

You are not. One person did not like it. She voiced it, some people understood others didn't. There is no plural, no lots of objections to any sexy concept.

About this so called sexy concept itself. It doesn't have to have relation to skin or bikinis or any other generic element. She could easily be vulgar in a bridegown or be very reserved completely naked.

Also what is sexy to you will not be to others and that's very obvious.

Nobody said anything about what she is wearing.

No she said she looked "escort-y" a polite euphemism for slutty. One photo is a "come hither" kind of stare the other is a side shot on her knees with her butt stuck out to show off her lovely figure. If these shots are "escort-y" then I'd like to know how she should have been posed. That's the problem it is suggesting that she looks slutty and it is "objective" or "subjective" that's how people get away with it. She back pedaled pretty quickly once called on it. It's also unfortunate that people would defend this position by claiming it's because the "media" sexualizes everything and women have no choice of their own. Not very empowering at all just more patriarchal clap trap.

I think she only disliked the style of the editorial and the pose of the fourth picture but I can't talk for her. I can't know the exact reason it gave her the feeling of escorty, it is very subjective, some might find it very innocent while others might feel it is more sexy.

By the way, I have nothing against racy, sexy or even slutty editorials. :) I think this here was pretty bland but I think a person should be able to say any editorial is possibly a bit escorty without being called misogynist, slut shamer and other nice names. :)

I follow her Instagram so I saw her post these yesterday. She has a good feed to follow. Right after the show wrapped she took a personal vacation to Europe and visited Paris and Italy and the alps. Lots of fun candid vacation shots, she seemed to have bumped into a fan in Paris and took a selfie with the lucky girl. But yeah generally she's a good one to follow as she gives you that nice mix of celeb shots, behind the scenes, pets & scenery, and obligatory food porn.

Hahaha! I don't know why but your description of her mix of Instagram photos had me laughing. And at the same time, made me want to follow her.

Honey Lee is one of my favorite people though you don't see her too often. i think these pictures are great, especially the third. Yoon Kye Sang is a lucky guy!

I like this actress, she does good work and she looks amazing in those pictures. I just looked at her profile and apart from being an actress she has several personal accomplishments i.e. a Bachelor's and Master's Degree pursuing her Doctorate, she speaks English very well, did amazing in the Miss Universe contest, is an accomplished traditional/classical musician and then some. What I gave is just a tip of her profile.

At 33 with those pics it is clear that she takes care of herself looking healthy and not like those other anorexic looking Korean actress who I always said that they need to be fed. How many of us can say those things about ourselves being that or before that age. To me those pictures show a confident woman, one who knows and is comfortable with herself. On a personal front she has been in a committed personal relationship with Yoon Kye Sang for 3 years - very lucky guy. I say she has a lot to be proud of in her life, good for her. Plus we are talking about Cosmopolitan magazine here people - it has never been a magazine known for conservatism or for youngsters. So I applaud this woman - Honey Lee YOU GO GIRL!!!

I'm really not trying to start an argument today really, but 33? How is a woman supposed to look at 33. I'm over 50 so my perspective must be skewed by what I see in the mirror but 33 for a woman should be a pretty good looking age. It's young.

It is an odd comment. Many Asian women tend to age way better than caucasian women. Asian women seem to lose their looks in their late 40s, near menopause time.

Most women have trouble hanging onto their looks after menopause. I think it's the dryness factor. I had lovely skin most of my life. Then all of sudden I became a walking desert. Gravity, gravity isn't your friend either. I don't get this idea that turning 30 means a woman is past her prime. This is something totally new for me. It must be brought on by this overly youth oriented culture that has swept the planet. The bar for women seems to get lower and lower instead of the other way around. Thirty is not old. It's just the beginning of your "prime" years.

Her eyes are absolutely stunning in that first picture. I also love how she is throwing off the whole 'lily white skin' obsession Koreans have by going tan for these images.

Looking at the comments shows that we are still far behind in accepting women equally. When men pose sexily no one thinks twice about it, but when a women does many foul words and comments and opinions get thrown out at her. Even if people aren't aware of it, that's still misogyny and an archaic holdover from when women were supposed to be pure and virgins. What women (and men) do with their body shouldn't affect or bother anyone. Honey Lee has one of the most amazing bodies I've seen in awhile and so I don't blame her for wanting to show it off. If I had that body I would be walking naked down the street. How does her posing sexily affect anyone? These are still pretty innocuous compared to some US and other country magazine photoshoots. I am proud of her throwing off the strict custom of not being too sexy and showing she is proud of her body.

That seems awfully vain and kind of hollow. "I'm great looking, everyone look at me!"

Really smart people who show off their intellect are called pedantic and rightfully ridiculed.

At least with intellect, it can be earned. She was born with her looks. Yes, you need to workout and eat right, but genetics plays a dominant role..............."Yay! look at how fortunate I was!"

If that's how she feels, then possibly. But unless she is rubbing it in other people faces and looking down on others for not being as good as her, what's wrong with showcasing her body? There is nothing wrong with having some pride in something, even if that happens to be your body and looks.

And saying she didn't earn it is a complete and utter lie. It takes A LOT of work and effort to keep up a good body like that (I know because I am working really hard myself to try and get one myself), it takes a lot of work to make your hair nice, it takes a lot of work to keep your face nice. Yes she was born with beauty already but there are plenty of naturally beautiful women out there but some of those women get overlooked simply because they don't put in any effort. That's not wrong by any means but brushing a woman off because she was just 'born' that way shows you are ignorant in how much work is actually involved. And intellect is the same as beauty. Some people are naturally smarter then others, but it still takes work to build upon that base foundation.

She DEFINITELY "earned it". If you watch Please Come Back, Ahjusshi, Honey Lee was not in this type of shape. Of course, she didn't look bad, but you could see that her thighs were a bit jello-y. But you could also see that she lost weight over the run of the series.

If the pics above are not photoshopped, she's worked darn hard and looks great.

>When men pose sexily no one thinks twice about it

Not true. There are always a few comments here from people who are bored by generic, sometimes silly, fake sexy poses for men as well.

It's dangerous if people can't say something because they are afraid of being judged.

Again, nobody said anything about this actress or any woman! People only commented on their opinions about the style of an editorial and others used this to act as if they were talking about a person.

And again if anyone says anything about the style choice of a magazine it does not mean they have any opinion about the model.

Yes some men do get it but not nearly on the level of women.

I wont argue with you because looking at your comments I can see that will be useless as you have stated the same thing many times over. I will let you think your way and I will continue to think mine.

Ok, being honest I don't even disagree with anything you said in this post except when you talk about the comments here in this thread not accepting women equally. Let's not agree on that.

What a rare treat to see a tanned Korean female celeb.

Whenever I see much older pics of k-celebs (like early to mid 00's and earlier) I notice that they were usually 2-3 shades darker than they are now. This includes celebs that were popular years ago and still are today. Same thing for Kpop idols. The male idols were more tan and most of them weren't inexplicably pretty and so boyish looking. Fashion also seemed more laid back but that could just be my perception.

Anyway love Honey Lee! She looks sexy, cute and beautiful all at the same time!

I wonder how this pictures looked "escort-y" . Some photos looked suggestive but dang! If you asked me AOA's "Like A Cat" music vid is way sexier. But i don't have problems with it either.

Its odd to celebrate looks, she didn't do anything to earn them, she born with her genetic makeup to look like she does.

I'm sure she eats right and works out, but so do a lot of people and few look like her...........because of their genetic makeup. Don't pictures like these lead lots of people to waste their own lives and self esteem trying to mimic her?

What is the point of having "sexy" poses? Is it to boost her own self esteem? That seems shallow. Is it to boost her career? then what happens when her looks inevitably fades and she is replaced with the next young good looking person?

Is it to attract a partner? but doesn't she already have one?

There are people on Instagram posing more "escorty" than these. I do not think these pictures are over-the-top sexy. It is not like she posed while taking a steamy shower, pretty much like all the korean male celebrities do.

I personally do not like over-the-top sexiness for both female and male celebrities, so I am consistent with this for each gender, but I think that this particular photoshoot is not one of them.

I am finally commenting on my own little post.

Honey Lee is gorgeous and fleshy and voluptuous. Look at her sexy lips and S line. And she is toned too.

Plus in real life she has brains and family power. To me she is like the female equivalent of whatever Koreans want in a man. Looks, family, brains, money and whatever else.

For this magazine spread the last photo is my favourite.

Beautiful photo-shoot! If sexy was the concept they were going for, then they sure nailed it - tastefully done. She's a beautiful actress/model, and the pics reflect that.

Good lord. I was just expecting the comments to be about how well she did in Come Back Ahjussi and how strict her diet was to achieve her fab figure but instead it has turn into some heated discussion.

Honey unnie you're still blazing trails wherever you go.

FYI her diet is pretty strict if you'd watch her Take Care of my Refrigerator segment. She not only emphasize on low fat etc she focuses a lot on healthy items too.

She is just toned and beautiful thats all.
